Magnetic methods have for a long time been used in the search for iron ore. In fact the first recorded geophysical prospecting was the use of a magnetic compass to locate iron ore in the Kuruna region in Sweden as early as 1640.The largest magnetic anomaly discovered, about 700,000 gamma-s, is in this region.The enormous deposits in Russia in the Kursk region, where the ore consists largely of magnetite, were discovered by magnetic methods. Heiland estimates the proved reserves at 290,000 million tons and the additional potential deposits at twice this amount.These magnetite ores Show extremely high magnetic anomalies and consequently very insensitive instruments could be used to survey them. The first aerial magnetic surveys were carried out in this area in 1928.Large areas of the iron ore producing regions in Norway, Sweden and the United States have been covered by magnetic surveys in the past 30 years, much of the work being started after the first World War.In every major iron ore producing country, except Australia, extensive magnetic surveys have been, or are, carried out with the purpose of extending the reserves of ore. Australia is indeed fortunate that the depletion of iron ore reserves and the location of new deposits has not become an urgent problem. Nevertheless, some minor reconnaissance work has already been carried out in Australia, and the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics is contemplating a more extended aerial magnetometer survey in the Middleback Ranges area. Solid Energy New Zealand (SENZ) uses a 20+ year period for integrated planning of all its business activities. It has an ongoing program of coal resource assessment to optimise future mines within this 20 year period, using a six step resource and mine planning process. Desktop review and conceptual study at preliminary Levels 1 and 2 are based on general coal resource information. Further coal resource investigations are carried out for the more detailed evaluations in secondary assessment, prefeasibility study, feasibility study and detailed engineering from Levels 3 to 6. At Levels 1 and 2, completing conceptual planning, including preliminary resource evaluation and economic appraisal to the target cost uncertainty level of ¦33 per cent, is challenging in New ZealandÆs highly variable geological and geographical conditions. Where coal deposit geometries are relatively simple, approximate methods for determining pit limits using overburden strip ratios, seam thickness, physical boundaries, and quality cut-offs may be sufficient. Many New Zealand coalfields are however complicated structurally, with multiple seams and extensive folding and faulting. Coal seams are characterised by variable dip, thickness, and quality over relatively short distances. In the North IslandÆs Waikato coalfields, coal is typically overlain by weak sediments and clay rich strata that necessitate very flat cut and fill slope angles. The proximity of these deposits to major infrastructure (including towns, highways and rail lines), significant environmental features such as the Waikato river and lakes, and valuable dairy farmland, add further complexity. Traditional preliminary mine planning techniques applied in these conditions are insufficient. Pit optimisation software, widely used in the metalliferous mining industry since the 1980s, offers the ability to analyse many more specific factors affecting pit limits, mine layouts, and economics, with more rigour and for a much larger number of scenarios, than traditional methods allow. SENZ therefore decided to adapt and use æWhittleÆ pit optimisation software for Level 2 analysis of several Waikato opencast prospects. This paper describes this work.

On the 1 June 1978, the Town and Country Planning Act 1953 was replaced by the revised and more comprehensive Town and Country Planning Act 1977. The new act brings in some substantial changes to the law affecting regional and district planning, and for the first time makes provision for maritime planning. The importance of the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 to the Mineral industry is primarily in the relationship between Regional Planning Schemes and District Schemes as the needs and resources identified in a Regional Planning Scheme will override the underlying District Schemes. The mineral extraction industry must be recognised as a regional responsibility which draws on the resources of a region to satisfy the demand of the communities within that region rather than a purely local operation within one District.

During the last decades, maintenance has changed from an ordinary repair activity to a complex function that plays an essential role contributing for the companyÆs results. The increasing level of complexity of modern equipment motivates maintenance personnel to improve both techniques, and management systems, in order to face the new challenges. Managing properly those modern means of production requires knowledge of methods and planning systems, controlling and performing maintenance tasks, in such a way that two objectives are achieved at the same time: system efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This paper shows CVRDÆs experience on evolving and implementing a model to plan and manage maintenance activities in order to achieve a higher level of performance on its operations.

In the recent years several new blasting technologies have come into use in surface mines. Electronic initiation, low-density emulsion explosives and modelling software are in regular use throughout the world. In Australia, these new technologies have achieved significant application, largely in open cut coal mines where more than 20 per cent of blasting is now conducted with electronic initiation systems. These new techniques have contributed to the vast improvement in blasting outcomes evidenced by increased recovery of saleable product and faster excavation rates. In large surface mines, OricaÆs unique combination of electronic initiation systems, bulk emulsion explosives and modelling software can be harnessed to target critical value outcomes. This includes targeting better fragmentation, increased ore uncovery rates and better wall stability û all adding to improved mining operation profitability. Orica Mining Services have combined these technologies into a set of offerings called Blast Based Services (BBSÖ). The paper describes applications of these new technologies and possible benefits in large surface mines.

The geographic imperative of ore systems leaves mining, more so than virtually any other aspect of modern industry, heavily dependent on obtaining and maintaining social licence to operate. A prospective miner cannot arbitrarily walk away from a deposit in search of more favourable community perceptions – concentrations of mineral endowment represent highly specific and fixed elements of the landscape, and their development and extraction thus requires the acceptance and trust of a specific network of landholders and stakeholders, sometimes with diverse and even competing interests in the development and use of the local environment. Weakness or absence of such social licence can bring added costs and complexity to developing and operating a mine – and in extreme cases even result in project failure. The Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) is responsible for several sets of legislation, which, among other things, regulate the storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods as well as every aspect of the life cycle of explosives in order to prevent explosions, fires and spillages. The legislation with particular relevance to explosives includes: The Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act 1961; the act deals with the storage, manufacture, sale, import, authorisation and use of explosives. It is primarily framed for use of explosives and fireworks in the general community but also has relevance for storage on mine sites. The Dangerous Goods (Transport) Act 1998; this act regulates the transport of explosives on public roads, but not on mine sites. The Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 (MSI Act); this act and supporting regulations deal with the full spectrum of occupational health and safety in the mining industry. There is a substantial section in the regulations dealing with the use of explosives at a mine site.DoIR has identified the need for security upgrades of the Government Explosives Reserves, the need to tighten security measures at mine sites, the need for improved security checking for licensed shotfirers and the need to restrict the availability of explosives to authorised people who have had appropriate security checks. It is also clear that we need restrictions on the sale and use of ammonium nitrate (AN). A number of additional security measures are being proposed and all proposals are being refined by ongoing industry consultations. These will be adopted into new explosives regulations in association with the new Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2002 (DGS Act). Government finalised the act in June 2004. The act remains dormant until new explosives and dangerous goods regulations have been prepared. When the DGS Act and a suite of regulations are proclaimed as a package, sometime between December 2004 and April 2005, the old legislation consisting of the current two acts, will be automatically repealed. It is also proposed that all explosive regulation, including those under the MSI Act will be consolidated in one place under the DGS Act for user friendliness.

Lihir operations of Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) are on Lihir Island (PNG) which is located approximately 900 km north-north-east of the national capital Port Moresby. The mine is located within the Luise Caldera of the Luise Volcano which is located on the east coast of the island. The caldera is an extinct volcanic crater that is geothermally active. Volcanic activity on Lihir Island is limited to remnant hydrothermal venting in the Luise Caldera in the form of hot springs and fumaroles. Steam and gas (including H2S) naturally discharge within the pit area and along the Kapit beach and near shore region. The hydrothermal reservoir temperatures can reach 100°C at the water table and exceed 200°C at depth. Newcrest maintains a Geo-hazard Management Plan to identify and manage the various geotechnical and geothermal hazards on-site. The major geothermal hazard to mining at Lihir is the occurrence of geothermal outbursts, which have occurred in the past with varying intensities and caused two ‘near misses’, production delays and material losses.

It is expected to be developed in the mid-1990s.The majority of the reserves lie in the 30 m thick Wolfang Seam. Botanical exploration has identified many plant species that naturally accumulate very high concentrations of elements, particularly heavy metals. The enormous potential applications of some of these species to remove metals from soil (phytoextraction) are slowly being realised. The discovery of hyperaccumulation has resulted in considerable research into applications for removing contaminants (phytoremediation) or more importantly, in the context of this discussion, for commercially æfarmingÆ metals (phytomining) from metal-bearing soils. Currently published phytoextraction models estimate Ni yields using Berkheya coddii (a South African nickelophyte) are approximately $US 750 ha-1, excluding the cost of processing. Research indicates that B. coddii will also accumulate significant amounts of Co, resulting in a considerable increase in the value of the crop. Modification of the substrate by acidification, fertilisation and/or chelation indicate fruitful avenues for improving this yield by increasing the extractability of the target element, elevating biomass production rates and/or rendering other contained heavy metals extractable. Plant uptake of more insoluble elements, such as Au, may be induced in many plant species using chemical compounds. These chelates applied to the soil, form soluble complexes with poorly soluble metals forcing them into the soil solution. Plants may then accumulate these metal complexes through transpiration. Research has achieved foliar Au concentrations of 78 mg kg-1 in Iberis intermedia, 56 mg kg-1 in Brassica juncea and 9 mg kg-1 in B. coddii (on a dry weight basis). Therefore in theory B. coddii could phytomine a soil containing modest concentrations of Ni, Co and Au to yield 116 kg Ni, 36 kg Co and over 6 oz Au ha-1 at a current value of $US 4000. Root crops have also shown promise in chelate assisted Au accumulation (eg 6.8 mg kg-1 in Beta vulgaris and 118.5 mg kg-1 in Raphanus sativus). Phytoextraction, in its varied applications, is rapidly coming of age as a technology having considerable potential for application in environmental science and the minerals industry. Phytotechnology employs unique plant biochemical behaviours in the rhizosphere, driven by the sunÆs energy, to seek out and concentrate low levels of heavy metals at very low cost.

"Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in project reporting may lead to a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, resulting in biased estimates or assumptions on project value.This paper provides a simple ‘Resource Project Framework’ for presenting a project’s status that may be readily benchmarked against other similar projects and to illustrate the stages required to advance the project outcomes to higher levels of certainty. The framework draws on definitions and guidelines readily available in various resource industry reporting codes and public company reporting requirements.The framework assesses three key areas for placing a resource project in its correct relative context, namely:the project development stagethe confidence in the Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and/or Ore Reservesthe level of accuracy, precision and confidence in the technical and economic studies supporting the reported results or options for the project.The application of the Resource Project Framework is illustrated using two project examples, one from publicly reported company project releases and the other for two development projects.CITATION:Noppé, M A, 2016. Geometallurgical modelling of an orebody provides benefits to a mine by gaining a better understanding of the ore characteristics and how they affect the performance of the concentrator. With this knowledge, plant operating conditions can be adjusted to optimise throughput and recovery in advance of the arrival of particular ore types. Therefore, it is extremely important that the origin of the ore being processed is known as accurately as possible. Depending on the homogeneity of the ore characteristics, reliance on assumptions about stockpile residence times, scheduling and material handling can render the best geometallurgical models useless.The solution adopted at Agnico Eagle’s Kittilä mine was to utilise Metso SmartTags™ and in-house expertise to develop a system that continuously and accurately links geotechnical and lab data from the mine to the performance of the plant. This application presented several unique opportunities and challenges. For example, this was the first installation of a SmartTag™ system for geometallurgical modelling in an underground mine. Challenges included the fact that the system installation is routinely subjected to temperatures below -20°C.The system was installed and commissioned in early 2013 and has been operating continuously since. Kittilä has begun to see the benefits of the system, with an increased understanding of how different ores are processed in the concentrator. Other advantages include the ability to alert operators about the arrival of difficult ores and a better understanding of the ore handling systems.This paper describes the installation and use of the system at Kittilä and details some of the geometallurgical relationships that have been developed using the data collected so far.CITATION:La Rosa, D, Rajavuori, L, Korteniemi, J and Wortley, M, 2014. Mechanical sampling provides a definitive value for the product sampled but the results are not instantaneous, meaning that decisions on process control can only be made hours after the sample is taken. Chemicals are added, tailings are sent to waste, stockyards are laid and the data for the decision-making is historical. Online analysers provide instantaneous information, allowing operators to make immediate and cost-saving decisions on the process. However, pending the specific online analysis application, there is a need for reference sampling for dynamic calibration/bias updating of the analysers so that they can deliver the desired precision and accuracy. What would be the economic justification for combining mechanical sampling with online analysis to reduce laboratory costs and provide immediate process control with certainty of accuracy? It is indeed an honour to address the perth branch of the australian institute of mining and metallurgy and to have the opportunity to talk to you about the future role of upgraded ilmenite on t102 feedstock supply and demand. There have been many papers written on upgraded ilmenite supply and demand and now I would like to share with you QIT's view of the situation first, a word about demand, although I will be talking principally on the supply issue. The principal use of t102 is in the manufacture of pigments which, in turn, are used in paints, plastics, and the paper industry together with a few miscellaneous uses, while a further b% or so of t102 minerals are consumed for the manufacture of titanium metal and for the manufacture of welding electrodes. the total demand for contained t102 is of the order-of 3 million tons per annum, and the general consensus in the industry is that growth rates should be of the order of 2% annually- it is against this backdrop that suppliers must compete with one another and produce least cost materials for the pigment industry. At the moment, supplies are relatively tight, but the generally slow growth in demand coupled with the abundance of titanium bearing minerals should ensure that long term the reverse is generally true. Now, let us examine the supply situation. Titanium is the 9th most abundant element in the earth's crust, so the problem from the producers` point of view is not one of scarcity of titanium minerals, but of how to extract most economically t102 feedstocks from a wide variety of choices- up to the present, all titanium feedstocks are being derived from either rutile or ilmenite rutile, at about 95% t102 content, is indeed a premier raw material which does suffer from potential scarcity and rutile supplies will likely be a diminishing factor in future decades- whereas ilmenite, a combination of iron and titanium oxides found in varying ratios, may be found in huge quantities all over the world.

Pipe umbrella systems have effectively been used as an additional support system in the working area in weak ground conditions during the last decades. Thus, a considerable number of applications accounts in urban tunnelling with shallow overburden. However, this support system is also successfully used when a tunnel alignment crosses fault zones, sediments, moraines or talus with overburdens from shallow to deep. The pipe umbrella support system itself is termed differently worldwide – synonyms are canopy tube umbrella method, umbrella arch method, or long fore-poling method.One main reason for the increase in application is that this support system closes cost-effectively the gap between reasonable, normal supported tunnels and tunnels supported with more expensive special techniques like horizontal jet-grouting or ground freezing. By using this system, many projects can be built more cost effective without decreasing the common level of safety.The pipe umbrella construction method is pretty young, so the knowledge about this system has been intensely researched in the last decade. This led to an enormous increase in understanding the interaction between support system and surrounding ground, the mode of action, and the important details for construction.Pipe umbrella support systems are applied in difficult ground conditions, so a special developed measurement arrangement was used to observe deformations ahead of the working face during tunnelling. The evaluation of collected data sets identifi ed that cased-drilling systems have clear advantages compared to predrilling systems during the installation process in weak ground conditions. This may become important depending on project requirements, so this difference must be considered in design as well as in the tender document specifications.

Water is an integral and essential part of mining business. Two issues crucial in the management of this resource, scarcity and excess, are increasing awareness of the importance of water and changing the value perceptions of the industry because they affect both the existence and continuation of the business. Therefore its value should be reflected in the water management that is practised on site. Historically water in mining has been perceived to be of low value so management practices have not been good or well implemented. Political and social transformation in South Africa has been accompanied by the promulgation of new legislation. South African water law is now underpinned by Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) principles. It impacts water pricing, provides for water pollution charges, prioritises water users, has specific mining and water related components and requires water licensing as part of the licence to mine. Mining no longer has a priority on water resources and has to compete with other water users to gain access to resources. New institutional arrangements are being put in place to implement the regulations. All this requires a paradigm shift in miningÆs view of water. Generally the sector is still catching up with the new requirements, principles and philosophies. However, the way in which South African mining values water is changing. This is demonstrated in partnerships between the industry and other water users. These partnerships are Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in practice and they achieve sustainable development goals. These partnerships are essential for mining to stay in business, expand operational capacity, reduce impacts, prevent legal action and reduce reputational risks.

The price of oil and other minerals may not make the costly business of offshore exploration seem -attractive at present. There is little doubt that the future search for the strategic resources will tend towards deeper waters particularly on the continental slope margins. In addition with the realisation that active tectonic environments (eg the Makassar Straits) cannot be excluded as potential hydrocarbon sources there is an increasing demand by the explorationists for deep water survey capability. Such deep water research has until recently been restricted to a few specialised academic institutions ;however with the anticipated extra, demand from other institutions, companies, and government agencies, Marconi Underwater Systems Limited (MUSL)and the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in the UK have come together to allow MUSL to provide the deep water mapping system GLORIA on a commercial basis -for the first time. The GLORIA package comprises a deep water(more than 400m) side scan sonar system which, by operating at a frequency around 6.4 kHz can insonify swathes on the seafloor up to 60 km wide. In addition, single channel seismic, 3.5 kHz high resolution profiles, precision echo sounding, magnetic and gravimetric data all combine to provide as complete a regional interpretation as possible. The GLORIA system combines surveying at a reconnaissance level, covering as it does up to 20,000 sq.km per day, with a very high reliability, so that even in- economically unfavourable times, it can-still be considered as an invaluable and cost effective primary exploration tool. Analysis of the GLORIA data enables the identification of areas of particular interest requiring more detailed study by the more costly multi-channel seismics at a later date.

The increasing mining depths of South African gold mine deposits are resulting in ever-increasing heat loads associated with depth and the geothermal gradient. Together with changes in the mining horizons brought about by the depletion of older, shallower, high-grade reserves, this leads to the need for the continuous review and redesign of cooling requirements. Traditionally, cooling requirements were met by using a combination of cooling strategies, including bulk air cooling on surface and underground. If this proved to be insufficient, chilled service water and secondary remote air-cooling systems were introduced. This paper reviews these practices in order to provide a cost-effective means of catering for the introduction of hydropower at the Gold Fields Ltd South African operations. Some of the equipment that has been developed to meet the requirements of both hydropower and refrigeration includes hydropower fans, cooling coils and in-stope venturis. These are individually described and discussed, together with their roles within the greater strategy. The planned change in the cooling strategy and the employment of these technologies have effectively doubled the cooling available, from 10 MW to more than 20 MW, extracted from the hydropower water used to drive the mining equipment. In conclusion, the cooling strategy described allows a total heat load of approximately 52 MW to be successfully ventilated and cooled through the use of combined surface and underground refrigeration installations, and through the use of hydropower-chilled water.
