The forecaster must focus attention on a number of key areas of interest. These areas include major economic trends and changing GNP structure, consumption time series, end-use consumption patterns and substitution potential, accurately updating data bases (up to 5 years ahead), random factor estimation and examination of both long term and secondary mine potential. While metal price forecasting has suffered due to recent uncertainties, with increased importance on planning tools and cost analyses, it is still a necessary function. Forecasting is subject to the real world and the metal industry is made up of imperfect markets in a dynamic state. The real world provides the challenge to improve the accuracy of forecasting.

Long Shaft was initially developed using a rail haulage system on every working level comprising battery electric locomotives and granby trucks loaded by rail mounted rocker shovels. Production was commenced using conventional hand held cut and fill mining methods. In an effort to improve productivity and reduce operating costs a mechanised cut and fill stoping method evolved to suit the wider sections of the orebody. To further improve productivity and reduce costs the mechanised levels of the mine are progressively being redeveloped to enable the use of trackless diesel haulage equipment. An added benefit of trackless haulage equipment will be the ability to place development mullock into stopes as Fill.

The Charters Towers goldfield in northeastern Queensland produced over 206 tonnes of gold from gold-quartz veins hosted by Mid-Palaeozoic granodiorite, tonalite, diorite and to a lesser extent amphibolite-grade meta-sedimentary schist and meta-igneous rock. Mineralisation occurs in grouped, moderately dipping shear zones with altered wallrock rafts and a complex network of quartz veins.Over 75 per cent of the production came from three main vein systems in the central goldfield: the Brilliant, Day Dawn and Towers Hill vein systems.The Brilliant vein system is hosted by undeformed tonalite and contains north-plunging oreshoots on a north-dipping main fissure and on shorter east-dripping hangingwall fissures. The Day Dawn vein system is localised along a north-dipping dyke at the contact of two deformed granitoids in a brittly reactivated mylonite, where horizontal oreshoot plunges may be related to the original megascopic undulations in that structure. The Towers Hill vein system is hosted in two granodiorite types and has multiple ore controls.Structural analysis indicates that the distribution of the oreshoots within the vein systems is variously controlled by the primary fabric and igneous contacts of the granitoid host rocks. Splaying, changes in dip, and fissure intersections are the main controls. The largest vein systems are both in reactivated shallow-dipping mylonite, or in fissures in younger undeformed granitoids. Each vein system lies in a separate structural domain, usually where older east-striking structures are preserved.

The radiolarian biostratigraphy of the western part of the Gympie Province, north of Brisbane, has been examined. This part of the province comprises mainly the Amamoor beds and the Gympie Group, which have been assigned Permian ages on the basis of localised marine macrofossils. This study has shown that the Amamoor beds and the Gympie Group include older strata than previously supposed.The Amamoor beds consist of at least two tectonic units, namely a melange unit (unit A) and a well stratified sequence of sedimentary rocks (unit B). The former unit, regarded as an accretionary subduction complex, contains chert blocks ranging from Late Devonian to Earliest Carboniferous, while the latter unit yields Permian radiolarians. Latest Devonian to Earliest Carboniferous bedded cherts occur in sequence previously mapped as Amamoor beds and Gympie Group.

In June 1996, Nord Resources Pacific (Nord) decided to work towards obtaining all necessary approvals from the government of PNG for a mine on Simberi Island in the Tabar Island Group, New Ireland Province. On the 9th of September 1996, Nord submitted a Proposal for Development and an application for a Mining Lease to mine the oxide gold deposits on Simberi Island. The Mining Lease was granted on the 3rd of December 1996 in a signing ceremony on Simberi Island. This was achieved in the extremely short time frame of less than 3 months and this paper attempts to explain the processes which made it possible.

Formed in 1965 to investigate the bauxite deposits on the Gove Peninsula, in the Northern Territory of Australia, Nabalco Pty. Limited undertook to determine the feasibility of establishing a mining operation and alumina plant of at least 500 000 tonne/year capacity. The drilling programme undertaken and the analytical methods, assumptions and criteria used to define practicably extractable bauxite are described. The ore characteristics and the interpretation of results used to evaluate the reserves are detailed. The operating techniques developed in mining ten per cent of the reserves and variations experienced between indicated and actual mining are examined and discussed.

Simulation modelling is a practice commonly used in the mining industry to evaluate alternative process designs. Such modelling is typically undertaken as an optimisation study to increase the efficiencies, productivity and product quality of operating mines. In this situation, real short-term grade variability data of extracted ore are available from production records as input data into the simulation.There is also a need for simulation modelling to be performed before mines are approved for construction to clarify the grade variability characteristics that can be expected from the operating mine and assist in the optimisation of the process design. In this situation no historical short-term grade variability data are available. To achieve meaningful and reliable results from a simulation it is necessary to have input data for the ore to be extracted from the pits, representative of the short-term grade variability that would be expected for the operating mine.This paper describes an example of a path taken to generate realistic input data.A method described as composite cut-off criterion was used to distinguish ore from waste, which gave substantially greater recovered tonnage at target grade compared to the conventional quadrant cut-off grade criteria.The only data available for the project was resource model data in the form of kriged block models, which are known to underestimate true ore grade variability. To achieve realistic results from the simulation it was essential to increase this variability while maintaining the accurate average grades. Areas of certain deposits that were modelled using both kriging and conditional simulation estimation techniques were quantitatively compared to establish the comparative variance and the kriged data was modified to match the conditionally simulated variance.A realistic mining model was generated via a process of discretisation and regularisation of the resource blocks. Quantitative assessment demonstrated that this method adequately compensated for ore dilution and that adjustment for ore loss was not required due to an ore skin surrounding the edge blocks.The conditioned data was then used to generate a schedule of daily mine extraction, considering grade variability, tonnage, equipment constraints and extensive blended-in-blended-out precrusher stockpiles to feed into the process design simulations.For the precrusher stockpiles a number of alternative allocation criteria were examined for ore being extracted from the pits to identify the best method in achieving reduced variability through the daily scheduling system. The study concluded that a single analyte separation criterion produced acceptable variability with minimal complexity.The blending efficiency of manually stacked and reclaimed precrusher stockpiles was studied to determine a realistic blending efficiency within the pile. A recommended method of building and reclaiming was determined to give maximum blending efficiency.Finally, the data was used as input into process design simulation models; simulation from crusher feed to shiploading demonstrating that control of shipment grade variability was achievable and that the conditioning of the data delivered realistic results.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. This paper discusses the recently com- pleted TBM-driven pressure tunnel at the Sand Bar Hydroelectric Power Project. The Sand Bar Project is a diversion scheme situated on the middle fork of the Stanislaus River in the Western Sierra Nevada, California, U.S.A. As part of the project, a 5.6 km long and 3.71 m diameter unlined pressure tunnel was bored by a Jarva TBM at the average rate of .37.5 m/ day. This report deals with construction aspects of the tunnel, including TBM performance, lining design, and remedial support measures. Correlations between TBM performance, geologic conditions, and rock properities are made, and the Contractor's mode of operations are discussed. Advance rate prediction, and the impact of these excellent advance rates attainable in hard rock using the new machines are discussed.

‘Like every other commodity, the value of the metals is subject to variation’ (Ricardo, 1817). Mineral commodity price uncertainties have always been a significant issue in mining business due to the close relation between global economic conditions and commodity prices, which commonly generates significant and unexpected price fluctuations. Price forecasts have been driven by economic theory, which states that in the long-run market will be balanced and that prices tend to the marginal cost of production. However, this theory has been misunderstood in the mining industry and future prices through time, in real terms, are assumed to be unchanged. This is unrealistic due to regardless of the cycling nature of economy and the omission of uncertainties. Furthermore, using historical data in traditional price forecast approaches does not guarantee realistic predictions as past events will not necessarily be repeated at the same intervals and with the same intensity. Mining, finance and economic sectors have made significant research efforts to predict prices and control uncertainties through classic linear, Gaussian and probabilistic simulation approaches. However, by definition, uncertainties cannot be measured or accurately modelled. Uncertainties can be identified to measure and manage the associated risks; therefore, uncertainties in mining projects have been historically misinterpreted, erroneously measured and poorly controlled. It is widely known that supply and demand functions drive market prices. While technological development noticeably influences supply, demand is strongly driven by psychological factors, mainly related to customer preferences and lifestyle expectations. Thus, human behaviour is one, or if not, the most important variable to determine commodity prices in a competitive market. During the last decades, alternative methodologies have been used to study uncertainties in human, environmental and market behaviours. Chaos theory, fractals, artificial intelligence and econophysics have been widely and successfully used to investigate complex dynamic systems to address uncertainties over time in the fields of neurosciences, meteorology, aviation and market trading. The application of these techniques in the market suggests a more realistic approach to the business environment. Through the combination of the methodologies above a novel long-run price uncertainties simulation approach that emphasise the differences between risks and uncertainties is proposed in this paper. In this paper, an analysis is made of the present situation in the Chinese steel industry and its demand for iron ores. It is shown that the demand for iron ores has been growing substantially with the rapid development of the steel industry all over the world, especially in China. However, the iron ore market is currently in the situation where supply exceeds demand due to the economic crisis, with more investment in mines and less output of steel for several years ahead all over the world. Gigantic pressure is confronting the Chinese steel mills due to the too high and irrational price of iron ores. It is time to return the price of iron ores to a normal position much closer to their value. More attention has therefore been paid to developing low-grade and complex iron ore resources in China due to the irrational price of imported iron ores. More innovative mineral processing processes have been developed to tackle these complex resources. A systematic introduction to the development of beneficiation processes for low-grade iron ores is provided, including upgrading low-grade siderite, limonite, micron sized haematite and magnetite resources.

Underground production from the low grade copper orebodies at Mount Lyell in recent years has involved surface subsidence of open cut areas. Relevant structural and lithological features of the geological environment are des- cribed. The highly mechanised underground mining system involves sublevel caving and sub- level open stoping with associated hangingwall cave. Monitoring of subsidence and caving has been made by regular visual inspection and measurement of crack development, and by sur- face profile surveys. These simple techniques have proved adequate in assuring management that ground movement is proceeding normally and safely.

Most world-class high-grade (60 - 67 wt per cent Fe) hematite iron ore deposits are the product of enrichment of Precambrian iron-formations but processes responsible for enrichment are still unclear. Different models, ranging from syngenetic and diagenetic (King, 1989), deep-seated hydrothermal (Powell et al, 1999; Barley et al, 1999; Taylor et al, 2001; Gutzmer et al, 2002) and ancient supergene (Morris, 1980; 1985; Van Schalkwyk and Beukes, 1986) to modern supergene (MacLeod, 1966) have been suggested. The high-grade hematite deposits stand in contrast to martiteûgoethite ores which are generally accepted to be the result of supergene enrichment of iron-formation because they are found along Cretaceous to Tertiary lateritic weathering profiles (Morris, 1980; Harmsworth et al, 1990). Uncertainties about the origin of the high-grade hematite ores appear largely due to the monomineralic composition of the ores. They are almost exclusively composed of hematite (as microcrystalline hematite and martite), a mineral with wide stability field and very simple chemical composition that reveals little about its origin. Second, many of the deposits have been overprinted by later deformation and chemical weathering obscuring primary ore characteristics and zonation (Taylor et al, 2001). Third, surprisingly few detailed geological studies have been undertaken on the deposits with the aim of unraveling ore genesis. Most studies focus on the present-day structure of orebodies and their general physical-chemical composition for mining and beneficiation purposes. A more thorough understanding of the origin of high-grade hematite iron ore deposits may be gained by combining available mining-orientated data with systematic petrographic-geochemical analyses of different ore generations and hematite phases. This paper presents a first summary of results of an ongoing study, started some two years ago, of high-grade iron ore deposits in South Africa, India and Brazil, including a comparison with the rather well studied deposits of the Hamersley Province in Australia.

The arid and semi-arid region of Western Australia occupies about two-thirds of the State equivalent to an area of about 1.8 million sqkm. Groundwater demand in this area has historically been linked to the pastoral andmining industries commencing with the gold discoveries in the Eastern Goldfields some 100 years ago. Substantial increases in demand have occurred in the past two decades initially as a result of nickel discoveriesin the early 1970's and more recently the rapid resurgence of the gold mining industry. Mineral exploration and development in the Great Sandy Desert at Telfer (gold) and Kintyre (uranium) and in the Great Victoria Desert at MulgaRocks (uranium) has also been accompanied by detailed groundwater investigations.

This paper describes several sources of external dilution affecting the stope walls during underground sub-level and bench stoping. Factors which control ground behaviour such as the geometry of the openings, the influence of geological discontinuities, stress re-distribution and blasting practices are discussed. Crown stope instability due to stress concentrations induced by changes in the excavation geometry, is discussed and the most efficient ways to sequence blasting within a stope are analysed. Effects of undercutting by blasting, blast damage in the near field and cut-off slot blast designs are analysed. The influence of dynamic loading on the exposed walls as well as the practice of blasting fill passes within stope crowns are discussed.

Remapping of the Burdekin Basin has resulted in subdivision of the three interfingering basin-wide megafacies previously recognised in the Early to Middle Devonian Fanning River Group. Eleven carbonate and siliciclastic facies are now identified within the three megafacies, representing coastal plain, shoreline, nearshore, and shallow marine shelf depositional environments. The facies reflect two phases of a major transgression. An initial phase, in the Early Devonian, was confined to the far north of the basin, whereas a second, main phase, resulted in the encroachment of the sea from the east or southeast in the Middle Devonian.The proposed depositional model begins with the drowning of a coastal plain and the transgression of shoreline and nearshore facies between granitic and metamorphic headlands and/or islands. This was followed by the deposition of a patch reef and fringing reef complex including stromatoporoid and coral bioherms, biostromes, and oncolitic, crinoidal, and brachiopod-dominated banks/shoals, together with foreslopes and submarine channels, carbonate rubble deposits and terrigenous sediments. Sedimentation during the peak of the transgression was dominated by sheltered carbonate shelf facies, the maximum, flooding surface being recognisable across most of the Burdekin Basin. Progradation of muddy and sandy nearshore bay and shoreline facies soon followed, terminating carbonate deposition.

Oxidised pellets have become an indispensable high-quality charge for blast furnaces (BF) due to their uniform particle size, high iron grade, high mechanical strength, good metallurgical performance, as well as relatively low energy consumption and gaseous pollutant emissions in pellet production. Nevertheless, due to the rapid development of the global steel industry, highquality pellet feeds are becoming more and more scarce. In order to broaden the source of pellet feeds and reduce the production cost of pellets, more and more steel mills are going to use coarse iron ore fines with relatively low iron grade and low impurities for preparation of desirable pellet feeds through a typical wet grinding-settling-filtering process. In this work, the grinding, settling and filtering behaviour of Brazilian and Australian iron ore fines are studied and compared, aiming at finding out the internal relationship between the mineralogical characteristics of different iron ore types and their grinding-settling-filtering performance. The results show that the grindability is heavily dependent on the hardness of iron ores, which is governed by the mineralogical characteristics of the raw materials. Usually the higher the hardness, the more grinding energy is required. Except for Brazilian specularite, Australian hematite-goethite type iron ore fines and Brazilian hematite ore fines exhibit good grindability with a Bond Work Index of about 10–15 kW•h/t. In addition, the settling and filtering performance of ground iron ores are largely affected by the density, mineralogical characteristics of iron ore fines (eg, quantity of clay minerals and goethite and porosity of ore particles), grinding fineness, etc. Generally, iron ore fines with higher density, lower quantity of soft minerals (clay and goethite) and larger particle size give superior settling and filtering performance. For iron ore fines with inferior grinding, settling and filtering performance, applying more energy-efficient grinding techniques, blending with ore types with good settling and filtering performance can reduce grinding energy consumption and improve settling and filtration rates to maximise the productivity of equipment and lower the operational cost

The microstructures exhibited by ilmenite in its association with other oxide minerals have been the subject of a number of papers, the most comprehensive of which is that by Ramdohr. The following observations in some degree extend his conclusions. They are based upon a study of about sixty specimens of "massive" ilmenite and titaniferous ores from a number of wIdely 'scattered Australian localities. Specimens of this character proved much rarer than was expected. The collection was gathered together through the generous aid of the University Geological Departments, Geological Surveys, and Natural History Museums of the several States of the Commonwealth, all of which contributed such specimens of local origin, as they possessed.
