Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. Comminution continues to be the most capital-intensive unit operation in mineral processing. The fundamental purpose of comminution is to liberate the valuable minerals so that they can be economically concentrated into saleable products. Declining ore quality characterised by lower grade and increased complexity requires significant energy consumption for comminution. Low-grade magnetite ores are typically fine-grained and require fine to ultra-fine grinding (P80 ~ 30 - 40 µm) to enhance its liberation from the typically siliceous gangue matrix. Historically, this has been achieved using multi-stage crushing and grinding technologies, which require high energy consumption with low energy efficiency. This motivated innovations in energy efficient technologies for comminution. Such technology has been developed in the IMPTEC super-fine crusher. It is an innovative, dry (with the potential to be operated wet), media-free, energy efficient crusher that can to reduce 10 mm feed particles to 19 – 30 µm with very low recycle loads. In this study, the mineralogical and physicochemical characteristics of crushed magnetite ore using the IMPTEC super-fine crusher have been investigated in comparison with those of rod milling. The super-fine crusher generated higher liberated magnetite minerals in the – 300 + 212 µm and < 45 µm size fractions compared to rod mill. Both comminution devices generated large low-grade hematite and goethite middlings. However, the rod mill produced higher locked/unliberated hematite and goethite compared to that of the super-fine crusher. Quartz mineral had the highest liberation irrespective of the comminution device used. The super-fine crusher generated higher entrapment of other minerals within the silica matrix compared to the rod mill. The breakage mechanism of the super-fine crusher which is predominantly through high compression with shear, generated improved mineral liberation in the coarse size fractions compared to the predominant abrasion and attrition breakage mechanisms of rod milling. The large, massive low grade gold orebody at Mount Charlotte has demanded an innovative approach to mining engineering. In the last five years several advances occurred in the areas of rock mechanics, mass blasting, blasthole drilling and truck haulage.Successive crown pillar failures throughout the life of the mine had resulted in a continuous geotechnical program, mostly utilisingconsultants. The culmination of this workwas the development of a successful crown pillar support system. Several stopes have incorporated the technique and the most notable success has been the relatively large F3 crown pillar.In hole hammer drilling was introduced to the mine in 1979, but little work had been done to develop a blasting system to suit the 165mm diameter holes. A non-electric sequential blasting system was adapted for use at themine and up to 600,000 tonnes have been fired successfully in an individual blast. Problems with ground vibration were addressed although this work remains incomplete.

The lower orebody (LOB) at Chingola Divi- sion of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the total copper production for the company. The uniformity of the geology of the orebody lends itself readily to a computer based ore reserve calculation and accounting system. The mining units are physically defined such that a hierarchical type of com- puter file organisation can reflect the existing physical interdependencies. In 1972, a project team consisting of one representative from each of the mine planning, operational research, and computer services departments was formed to investigate and to define the technical mining requirements of the dynamic ore reserve system (DORS). Flash smelting is a complex and capital intensive technology. Although in use for 50 years the technology is still not well understood from a fundamental point of view and thus uncertainty is evident when significant change to the practice is necessitated. The application of effective design and process simulation tools has significant advantages when process change and improvement is required. Mathematical models have been used to simulate the processes occurring in the shafts of copper flash smelters. The present approach to flash furnace modelling differs from earlier work in that the burners were modelled in detail, the output from the burner model becoming the input to the shaft model. This paper serves as an introduction to the modelling process used to analyse the performance and provide a better understanding of the parameters applicable to the flash furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter.

Field investigations recently undertaken by Utah Development Company (U.D.C.) have been developed to allow the assessment of ground conditions relevant to the use of large bucket wheel excavators for pre-stripping overburden. "Bucketwheel diggability" predictions were made on the basis of a wedge test which was perform- -ed in the field on nominal 150 mm diameter drill core samples. Specific separation force (calculated from the wedge test results) for different rock horizons were theoretically related to the excavation rates of various sized bucketwheels, i.e., "bucketwheel diggability". The specific separation force was shown to vary with lithology, structure, weathering and moisture changes. By correlating these features between boreholes, an overall assessment of bucketwheel diggability was then made. The approach adopted to assess bucket- wheel diggability incorporated various levels of investigation. Initially, a reconnaissance stage provided information from widely spaced 150 mm cored holes to compare and contrast areas with differing bucketwheel digging char- -acteristics. During 2001 the Ridgeway Gold Mine, driven by company initiatives and recent NSW legislation (General Rule 2000), developed and implemented Major Hazard Management Plans to control significant hazards identified at the underground mine. The paper presents the objectives, issues, outcomes and process involved in the development and implementation of the plans at Ridgeway. The sharing of the experience gained and an overview of the intended way forward will offer a valuable insight for other mines considering embarking on a similar journey.

The Westmoreland uranium deposits occur on the northern flank of the Murphy Tectonic Ridge in the upper member of the Westmoreland Conglom- erate. Uranium mineralization is spatially associated with the contact of the overlying basaltic Siegal Volcanics and the margins of in- trusive dolerite dykes which are geochemically similar to the Siegal Volcanics. Thermoluminescence (TL) measurements on 800 samples from within the orebodies and surr- ounding host rock (up to 8 kilometres away from the deposits) have indicated that all of the Westmoreland Conglomerate has suffered major radiation damagg attributable to at least 10 ppm uranium over 10 years. The underlying rhyolitic Mid Proterozoic Cliffdale Volcanics have distinctive TL glow curves indicative of radiation sensitization caused by high uranium contents. These vol- canics are part of the Mid Proterozoic volcanic event known to be enriched in uranium. The Westmoreland Conglomerate has been derived by erosion of the uranium-rich Cliffdale Volcanics and associated Nicholson Granite Complex which makes it likely that the Westmoreland Conglom- erate had a high inherent uranium content.

The quantity of post-consumer ‘waste’ materials generated each year is rapidly increasing. These materials can contain significant quantities of critical metals and present an environmental challenge if landfilled. The ISACYCLE™ technology is a proven solution for the processing of these materials. In the ISACYCLE™ furnace, the post-consumer materials are processed to recover energy along with any contained critical metals, in the form of a base metal alloy or matte. In addition, a clean aggregate (slag) is generated, which has the potential to be used for a range of applications in the construction industry. This slag is commonly based on a fayalite slag but is modified to manage the complex feed. This paper will review the fayalite slag system and the theoretical modifications required for treating urban wastes. Slags from an ISACYCLE™ furnace processing urban wastes have been sampled and characterised. The chemistry of these samples will be reviewed and compared to the expected theoretical modifications required.

Lode-gold systems are often characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect (>50 per cent), and the presence of coarse gold particles (>100 ¦m in size). They rank amongst the most difficult of ore deposits types, in terms of producing an accurate and precise resource estimate. Their effective sampling is generally difficult because of the relatively low concentrations involved and erratic nature of the gold particles. Grade continuity is usually less consistent than gross geological continuity, and is typified by the localisation of grades within discrete oreshoots. In most cases drilling, particularly diamond drilling is an effective measure of global geological continuity, whereas grade can only be reliably resolved from underground development. Depending upon drill density and geology, it is unlikely that anything above an Inferred Mineral Resource can be estimated from surface drilling alone. Underground development, in-fill drilling and, potentially, bulk sampling or trial mining will be required to delineate Indicated and Measured Mineral Resources and subsequent Ore Reserves. Grade estimation will have to account for highly skewed and often multi-modal populations, extreme values, a high nugget effect and low geostatistical ranges. A clear geological model that honours both geological and grade continuity must drive the resource estimation process.

Since 1981 two single entry roadways have been driven at Ellalong Colliery for a total distance of 1 030 metres. They were driven at a height of 1.73 metres within the 3.7 metres thick Greta Seam using a Dosco In-Seam Miner (I.S.M.). Ventilation of the drivage was accomplish- ed by an exhausting fan in series with steel ducting and flexible ducting in the immediate face area. The air quantities provided at the face were more than adequate to comply with the requirements of -the auxiliary fan rules and the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended. The experience gained in these drivages demonstrated that the ventilation of long single entry headings can be practically and safely achieved using existing equipment.

A case study is presented that details the safety journey at a North American project involving two major contracts: a 1000 m shaft recovery and rehabilitation, and the development of a drainage gallery in a large open pit operation. In the early stages of the contracts, there were a number of incidents that created tension between the owner and contractor, which resulted in the contractor being placed on a final warning with almost imminent potential termination. As a result of this, it was agreed to initiate a focused safety recovery plan as a ‘last chance’.Over a period of two years, the engagement and consequent performance of the contractor was turned around, steadily working to set it up for success such that in one of the contract work areas, a record of ‘one year LTI (lost time injury) free’ was achieved. The journey involved the owner and the contractor teams working cohesively to educate all parties in the safety requirements and, most importantly, providing the context and understanding for certain requirements being put in place. Early on in the process, it was recognised that the owner team unknowingly was an impediment in that they did not fully understand the safety requirements and so was not able to lead the way for the contractor effectively. The journey to rectify the situation was supported and followed up by focused engagement with the project team, which generated a progressive improvement in a very challenging environment.In particular, the contractor turnaround was significant and of enough value for the contractor to ultimately export some of the safety systems from this site to other contract sites. The ready availability of powerful desktop workstations, which combine 3D real-time graphics and processing speed better than that of supercomputers of a few years ago, now allows the cost-effective solution of real world geomechanics and underground mining strength simulations. The inclusion of geotechnical factors such as rock joints and porous flow on strength and stability are discussed together with the range of available deformation and failure models for soil, rock and concrete. This paper describes the capabilities provided by finite element graphics and analysis software for modelling and sequential investigation of both excavation and lining, or rock bolting, construction sequences. Examples of the use of finite element models in mining are also included in the paper, together with a discussion of the required people, software and computer hardware resources required to achieve timely and productive results.

The Emperor vein system lies on the eastern margin of the Tavua volcanic structure. This is of Miocene age and occurs in basalts(the Mba Volcanics) probably underlain at about 2 km by calcite-rich sediments (the Vatukoro Formation). The lodes are generally flatmakes, or steep fault fillings, or complex shatter zones, and consist of quartz and altered wall rock. In areas of open cavities it is possible to establish a paragenesis which involves five quartz stages and two ore mineral stages. The first ore stage contains calaverite, krennerite, sylvanite and native tellurium, the second petzite, hessite and native gold. The quartz stages are thought to have formed slowly (102 years) from boiling solutions of low salinity at temperatures varying with time from about 250¦C to 190¦C. The system was sealed, the temperature gradient near vertical and the mass flux small. The ore mineral stages probably formed relatively rapidly (101years) from boiling solutions at 250¦ to 200¦C when the system was mainly open. Gold deposition was probably largely a result of fall in aH2S due to boiling, the calculated solution concentration falling from a maximum of about 8 ppb at 250¦C to about 8.10-3ppb at 200¦C. Boiling is also probably responsible for an increase in a02 (by loss of H2) and fall in aTe2 (by loss of H2Te). The fluids are thought to have had a large component of meteoric water and to have been heated by plutons in the core of the volcanic structure. Stable isotope data indicate that they derived their carbon from the underlying Vatukoro Formation and their sulphur from sediments. Circulation may have been confined to the outside of the volcanic structure because of the relatively low permeability of the flows, pyroclastics and dykes within it.

Gold was mined from quartz bodies at Ballarat East from the 1850s until closure of the last mine in 1917. The average depth of mines was about 350 m.Ballarat Goldfields Limited (BGL) carried out diamond drilling from surface between 1985 and 1987 which proved the continuation of gold-quartz mineralisation beneath the old mines.During 1989 an underground development program was commenced to access the mineralisation for detailed exploration. The program included two simultaneous shaft developments. These were known as B2 shaft and Llanberris No.1 shaft.

Sampling drawpoints in block cave mines has been a contentious issue for many years. Doubts have been expressed as to the validity of the process used at most mines. This paper outlines the sampling practice commonly in use, discusses the resulting issues associated with reconciliation and drawpoint closure decisions. The paper also looks to the future and highlights issues for some block cave mining operations currently planned to have in the order of one thousand active drawpoints. It is likely that these operations will require a new approach to drawpoint sampling. A limitation to present theoretical roof reinforcement design methods is the inability to derive accurate and quantitative information about the roof rock condition and the action of reinforcement at various excavation stages. To obtain the information required to assess roof rock stability, detailed monitoring of the in-situ behaviour of reinforcement and roof strata is required. Reliable instru- mentation and techniques have been developed for use in underground coal mines to identify the geometry and magnitude of displacements occurring in roof rock and the forces generated in reinforcement. The use of such instrumentation allows an accurate assessment of the in-situ capability of reinforcement and the mode of reinforcing action developed. In-situ monitoring can supply data required for the practical design of reinforce- ment and assess the potential stability of current designs. The use of such data together with mine wide appraisal of rock and stressfield considerations, can allow roof reinforcement to be designed on the basis of a predicted roof Response.

Over the last six years Mandalay Resources has increased production rates and improved safety outcomes at its Costerfield mine in Victoria, Australia. This mine is an underground operation utilising narrow mining techniques to extract vertical veins, and produces up to 80 000 equivalent ounces of gold per annum, in both gold and antimony value.The operational challenges of narrow vein mining include controlling overbreak when veins being mined are only 300 mm wide. The mine has developed methods and modified equipment to suit extraction of these veins. Productivity improvements over the period have involved development of a stoping method and equipment to suit 1.8 m wide development drives. Over the last five years and during a skills shortage, recruitment, training and retention of personnel has been key to keeping corporate knowledge and skills to execute a careful efficient mining technique to minimise overbreak.Managing an underground operation close to nearby residents has unique challenges. Historically Victorian residents had family members work as underground miners; however, in the current day with few underground operations in this jurisdiction, community knowledge of mining has decreased. The Costerfield Operations are only 100 m from the nearest residence and the company values community engagement, partnership and investment with local Heathcote organisations.The mine has invested substantially in executive coaching of its leadership team early, which has paid dividends in problem solving potential of that team and ensuring the operation delivers on its promises to all stakeholders. The operation has become safer and employees are now more aware of their individual contribution in producing safe, efficient gold and antimony that benefit the whole operation, community and the region.CITATION:McCarthy, M, 2016. The paper outlines the adoption and evolution of ‘sustainable development’ as a concept in tailings management practices in the mining industry over the last 30 years. Over 500 lives have been lost in tailings facility accidents since World War 2. The paper outlines commonalities in many of these accidents, particularly the role of excess water. It considers the role effective tailings management can play in enhancing the social acceptability of mining in the future.Tailings management is a major operating cost at many mines while the cost of successfully closing tailings facilities is also very high. Current tailings management practices in the industry are outlined. The technical and engineering challenges of reducing potential risks associated with tailings by reducing water entrainment are described. The successful development of practical techniques to better manage tailings and reduce water consumption and wastage are described. For example, water removal in the alumina industry to produce a paste for dry stacking is now a reality.The future adoption of these new risk reducing techniques by the industry is discussed and the implications of the adoption or non-adoption of these techniques on the industry’s future ‘social licence’ is considered.
