The excessive displacement of the seam floor in headings (i.e. roadways) called 'floor-heave' is often experienced in the underground mines of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales. Apart from interfering with the mining operations, the phenomenon could be detrimental to the stability of the pillars left for support leading to an unpredictable increase in the subsidence of the overlying strata. The latter could pose a serious problem, particularly in the design of partial extraction layouts of mining for areas where subsidence is to be controlled. The susceptibility of the floor of different rock materials and thicknesses in a given `panel and pillar' partial extraction geometry was examined by two- dimensional Finite Element Modelling of the displacements, stresses and failure zones around the excavations. The modelling, assuming elastic behaviour of the materials, indicated that the maximum vertical displacements of the floor increased substantially as the Young's Modulus of the material decreased to less than 7GPa and the thickness of the layer increased. The results also discount the possibility of a properly designed panel and pillar geometry in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales being unable to adequately control surface subsidence through the pillar, or its core independently of the yielded ribs, penetrating the floor.

"X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is the most common technique used for online slurry assaying in base metal flotation applications. Typically, assays from feed, concentrate and tailings slurries are used to monitor and control the flotation circuit, with possible additional sampling locations in other main slurry flows inside the circuit. The elemental content detection from the XRF spectrum is relatively straightforward as the spectrum contains element-specific peaks whose height corresponds to the element concentration in the sample. However, centralised XRF analysers measure the elemental concentrations line-by-line, which may increase the sampling interval for an individual line and cause unnecessary response delays, especially in large flotation plants. Reflectance spectroscopy is an emerging technique that can be used to obtain more frequent measurements from slurries. The measurement is based on the mineral-specific absorbance of light in the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) wavelength range. Due to this relatively inexpensive and simple measurement system, it is possible to conduct the measurement simultaneously in several slurry lines. However, the information contained in the VNIR spectra is more difficult to interpret as concentrations of all the minerals in the sample contribute to the measured spectrum and changes in solids content, particle size and mineralogy disturb the elemental content estimation. Therefore, frequent calibration of the measurement is required. This study presents the application of combined reflectance spectrum and XRF measurements for rapid online slurry assaying in a copper-nickel flotation plant. The XRF assays are utilised as calibration samples for the reflectance spectrum measurement, keeping the calibration model up-to-date. In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

Production from the narrow, high grade silver-lead-zinc orebodies below 15 level commenced in mid 1985.Geological, mining research and recent mining experience determined that a mechanised drill, fire and muck cycle would be the most suitable method.Ground conditions are predicted to be worse than in other cut and fill (MICAF) areas at Isa Mine, owing to the increased depth, more variable dip of the orebodies and the increased effect of major geological structures.Mechanised ground support and tight filling techniques feature in controlling these expected adverse ground conditions.

Coal mass strength properties must be estimated to obtain realistic estimates of coal pillar strength. The limitations of existing techniques for approximating these properties are discussed. The coal mass is anisotropic. The Hoek and Brown approach to rock mass property estimation is modified to allow for this. This approach requires the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) for the strata. In the normal case where bedding is sub-horizontal, these major planes of weakness have little effect on the strength of pillars. As a result of this the RMR must be measured parallel to bedding. This means that a significantly higher rating than that usually obtained for coal is observed. The use of mass strength property estimates in extant empirical relationships is outlined. At high width to height ratios, an acceleration in the rate of increase in pillar strength with increasing width to height ratio has been observed. The empirical relationship developed by Salamon (the so called squat pillar formula) takes account of this. This relationship was found to have significant limitations with respect to its universal application. Modifications are made to Bieniawski&apos;s empirical formula to extend its use to large width to height ratio (squat) pillars. This new squat pillar formula has none of the disadvantages associated with Salamon&apos;s relationship. Strain softening was incorporated into non-linear finite difference numerical modelling to estimate pillar strengths. The technique outlined above is used to obtain peak coal mass properties. Modelled pillar strength was found to be sensitive to both peak and post peak mass strength properties. Post peak properties were found to be difficult to obtain and required some back analysis. Modelling results were used to estimate both the strength of squat pillars and parameters for use in a new squat pillar empirical strength relationship.

The Australian Corporations Law generally requires Independent Expert Reports to be presented in support of capital raising or in defence of mergers and takeovers. The introduction of the VALMIN Code in 1995 (and its recent revision issued as the VALMIN Code, 1998) made Assessment and Valuation Reports in these circumstances much more comprehensible than before because of its key requirements for transparency and materiality. By forcing the Independent Valuer to provide an explanation of the reasoning behind the estimation of a particular resource asset, VALMIN allows the reader to clearly see any error or illogicality in the valuation methodology used and to seriously question or even reject the resulting value. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Independent resource asset Valuers are the essential link between mineral explorers/miners on the one hand and brokers/analysts/fund managers/investors on the other. The minerals and financial industries both expect them to not use inappropriate or invalid valuation methods and illogical steps within these methods. This paper examines some of the less sensible ways in which some of the main techniques that Valuers commonly use to assess the fair market value of mineral properties have been applied in recent instances. The authors hope to discourage the adoption or perpetration of the æWhat-number-did-you-have-in-mind?&apos; approach. It is MINVALÆs view that as many methods as possible should be used in any resource asset valuation. If any of the resulting estimates are in approximate agreement (particularly if they were derived using the less subjective of the available methods), ie if they cluster, they are probably more persuasive as being the Preferred Value of the asset than outlier values within the Valuation Range.

As this district is so far distant from the other mining centres and its mode of approach so circuitous, I am afraid that many residents of other portions of the Commonwealth never think of paying this&quot; Australia&apos;s Silver City&quot; a visit, to learn personally the many and various lessons everywhere available, and to become familiar with the really wonderful and interesting features and deposits (which pature has so lavishly bestowed in the mineralogical world) yet seemed to almost ignore or overlook when disposing of topogr,aphical beauties of landscape and vegetation) unless professional or business duties require their presence here. So it is to those whose life is necessarily spent in other parts of the States where they answer their call of duty, and yet feel an interest, either for business or other reasons, that my paper is specially addressed and prepared, and for that reason I witl endeavour to make my remarks more of an explanatory than a dictatorial nature. I feel sure that there. are many members of our Institute who are much more familiar, and have had many more years&apos; experience in the various methods of timbering, filling, and ore extraction, etc., than myself, but I hope that over I6 years&apos; experience in connection with mines and engineering works, the last six of which have been spent in Broken Hill, where, I have been very closely connected.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine is being developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km northeast of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners, road-headers and hydraulic extraction. &nbsp; The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumped down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making. &nbsp; PRCL faces significant challenges to achieving the goal of cost effective production. The remoteness, high rainfall (greater then 6 metres per year on average), temperature variation and restrictions on access to this subalpine environment have driven the project to develop some distinctive solutions. These include the establishment of survey control in such a difficult environment with vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, significant vegetation and steep slopes by using helicopter survey, aerial photography and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) aerial survey. PRCL has also commenced designing the placement of the main ventilation fans in an underground chamber in the stone drive.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal&apos;s new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. The major Permian coal deposits of N.S.W. are in the Sydney-Bowen Basin and associated small deposits occur in structurally isolated areas; a further deposit is present in the Oaklands Basin. - The Sydney-Bowen Basin in New South Wales comprises the sub basins, the Sydney Basin and the Gunnedah Basin. Coal measures in these basins are near the top of the Permian succession and within and below an underlying marine sequence. The coal deposits can be conveniently described in units in which the coal geology is homogeneous. The Clyde Coal Measures and Yarrunga Coal Measures contain no seams of economic significance and occur beneath the marine beds in the south of the Sydney Basin. The Greta Coal Measures are economically significant and represent a brief interlude in the marine sequence in the north of the Sydney Basin and equivalents are present in the east of the Gunnedah Basin. The Tomago Coal Measures crop out above the marine sequence east from the Lochinvar Anticline and dip southeast to uneconomic depths. The Newcastle Coal Measures are historically and economically very important and overlie the Tomago Coal Measures and these measures will continue to be important although future mining will be faced with greater depths. To the west of the Lochinvar Anticline the Singleton Coal Measures, equivalent to the Tomago and Newcastle Coal Measures, crop out. This unit represents the thickest development of coal measures in the State and has a very large potential for both open cut and underground mining. Equivalents of the Singleton Coal Measures, the Black Jack Coal Measures and the Booroomin Group crop out on the east side of the Gunnedah Basin and probably are widespread across the Basin. They have less economic potential than the Singleton Coal Measures. In the southwest of the Gunnedah Basin, Illawarra/Singleton Coal Measures crop out over extensive areas and possibly have a large potential for underground mining under low cover. The Illawarra Coal Measures are exposed along the western margin of the Sydney Basin and thicken as they dip into the Basin across a shelf. The outcrop area is currently mined and the shelf has considerable potential for future mining. The highest rank coals in the State are in the Illawarra Coal Measures in the south of the Sydney Basin. The deepest coal mining is in this area and its continuing success is of great importance to the future exploitation of the resources of the Basin. The Tomago, Newcastle, Singleton and Illawarra Coal Measures extend into and meet in the central area of the Sydney Basin but they are under thick cover and are not considered to be economic at present. Permian coal measures occur in isolated areas in the New England Fold Belt and have limited economic potential. The Oaklands Basin in the south of the State contains a large reserve of low rank coal.

Nuggety gold-quartz reefs are characterised by localised, high-grades and in many cases coarse free-gold. Geometrical and grade complexities are often observed. The high-grade regions are generally erratic and have a low continuity; though may make the deposit economic. Viable grades are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade material. Drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development and bulk sampling. In general terms, only an inferred resource is likely to be estimated from surface drill data alone. Underground development, further drilling and probably bulk sampling will be required to delineate inferred and indicated resources. Closely spaced development with bulk sampling is likely to be the best way to determine a probable reserve. The resource evaluation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand the controls to reef geometry and grade distribution. Geological interpretation has traditionally been undertaken in two-dimensions, though computer software is now being used to produce three-dimensional models. Grade interpolation has generally been undertaken using classical methods, typically weighted averages, zone of influence weighting and polygonal/sectional blocks. Tonnages can generally be calculated from diamond drill and development information with a reasonable degree of confidence. Grade is much more difficult to define with confidence because of its highly erratic and discontinuous nature. To account for variability it is recommended that a best estimate be reported within a grade range, as this more accurately reflects the uncertainties involved. Reporting should be undertaken within the framework of the JORC code, but should involve special consideration of grade reliability.

Whilst the value of Pit to Plant and Mine to Mill optimisation has been proven since the 1990s, sustaining the productivity and efficiency gains typically requires ongoing test work, blast trials, plant surveys, and model calibration services. In contrast, the input to digital twin Pit to Plant or Mine to Mill optimisation is tens to hundreds of millions of tonnes of standard mine operating data. This paper presents a series of digital twin case studies from across the mine value chain, including machine learning testing methodology, model accuracy statistics and the application of Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) for model interpretation. These case studies demonstrate how machine learning and data fusion ore tracking connects hundreds of millions of tonnes of downstream performance data to produce digital twin models (operating models that are continuously updated and integrated into the wider Mine to Mill/Pit to Plant ore tracking system). Digital twin modelling software has been used to add block model variables for dig-rate, crusher and mill throughput, recovery (tailings grade), lump yield, product grade and product quality, fines yield and fines in lump. Block-by-block predictions are added to the geological resource and grade control block models as new block model variables. These new block model variables are used across all mine planning time horizons from life-of-mine planning to daily schedules. In addition to the materials handling and geometallurgical prediction case studies, the paper also presents digital twin case studies for drill and blast simulation and plant set point optimisation. The case studies show how digital twin simulation enables drill and blast engineers to simulate the effect of different blast designs in different blast domains using the mines operating data. Plant set point optimisation applies mathematical optimisation algorithms to the machine learning model to provide live operational decision support to metallurgists and plant operators. The digital twin machine learning case studies demonstrate a digital and sustainable paradigm for Mine to Mill and Pit to Plant optimisation.

Attritioning has been a method of improving mineral extraction for over 60 years, however it is only recently that an understanding of the mechanism employed and the improvement in efficiency that have been achieved.The paper will discuss these improvements and how to overcome the problems that have been raised. At present there is a dearth of information on the correct design and operation of these machines.The paper will address these issues as well as fluid on the Zeta potential, micro shear, retention residence time and pilot plant operation.A study on the hydrodynamics of attritioner operation has been identified and will be discussed.Surface chemistry, clean lines of attrition material and the treatment of fines significant advances in the understanding of attritioning highlighted.CITATION:Baguley, W, 2013. Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.

World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. The McArthur River (HYC) deposit, located in the Northern Territory of Australia, was discovered by Mt Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955. It is one of the largest sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits known. Previous attempts to exploit the deposit have been thwarted by its geographical location, the capital expenditure required to establish an operation and the fine-grained nature of the mineralisation. The steeply dipping western margin of the deposit is covered by up to 25 m of overburden, and lies beneath the McArthur River and its flood plain. Dips are eastward, with the eastern edge of the deposit at a depth of about 400 m below the surface. The average thickness of the deposit is 55 m, and it covers an area of about 1.8 by 1.3 km. Seven stratiform orebodies are interbedded with sedimentary breccia, tuff and poorly mineralised siltstone. Mineralisation consists of finely intergrown sphalerite and galena, hosted by pyritic siltstone of the middle Proterozoic McArthur Group. Selective underground mining of the lower orebodies will extract more than one million tonnes of ore per annum. The dip of the mineralisation demands that mining will be by way of apparent dip room and pillar. Declines will provide access and haulage, and wherever possible development will be in ore. Initially, haulage will be by trackless diesel powered trucks, but these will be replaced by a conveyer system. A single zinc-lead-silver concentrate will be produced from a simple flowsheet. This flowsheet has been developed in the laboratory and demonstrated during an extensive pilot plant campaign. A single stage SAG mill will be utilised to grind the ore down to a P80 = 45 ltm (80 per cent of particles passing 45 ¦rn. The iron and steel industry is experiencing an increase in the use of iron and steel commodities within societies, decarbonisation pressures, depletion of high iron ore grades and high energy consumption. This necessitates scrap metal recycling, low-grade ore utilisation using the induction or electric arc furnace to achieve the global target of net zero CO2 emission. The available highquality scrap metal cannot sustain the steel industry but the world has unused hematite-goethite ores. It is the aim of this research that this resource be utilised using the induction furnace to sustain the steel industry in an environmentally friendly manner. Indurated pellets prepared from the hematite-goethite ore, 5 wt per cent limestone and 5 wt per cent coal addition were smelted in the induction furnace at 1350 ± 50°C with 25 mins holding time. The effects of basicity and carbon content were also investigated to optimise the smelting parameters. The results showed that the careful control of the basicity, and iron-to-carbon ratio maximised total metal recovery. The optimal basicity ratio was determined to be 1.3 and a carbon to iron ratio of 1.4 achieved a total metal recovery of 73 per cent. The metal recovery was closely related to the estimated slag melting temperature. The basicity ratio of 1.3 achieved the lowest slag melting temperature estimated to be around 1380°C based on the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 phase diagram. The recovered metal had a comparable chemical composition and microstructure to that products from an ITmk3 furnace.

"Fluidised-bed flotation has been demonstrated over the last 16 years as an effective method for improving the flotation recovery of coarse particles. This technology has been successfully deployed into the industrial mineral sector with multiple installations within phosphate beneficiation plants and potash mills. Due to the minimal mineral surface expression required when utilising this technology, more recent studies have centred on the applicability of using this HydroFloat&#8482; technology for the recovery of coarse sulfides and base metals. Multiple approaches have been investigated to determine the best means for implementing this novel coarse particle flotation system into both existing and new plant circuitry. These include the treatment of tailings to recover values that have been lost using conventional technologies and also the direct treatment of a coarse feed, either within the grinding circuit or by use of a separate split-feed flotation approach. Recent applications of the technology will be presented along with data generated from several test campaigns and ongoing research investigations.
