The key-note of good writing, as of good manners, is B natural. Sincerity is the first requisite for effective writing. When a man says what he knows or believes, he is likely to be interesting, because each human being possesses an individuality, a point of view, or a range of sympathy that makes him different from his fellows. To say or to write what you do not think, for the mere sake of talking or writing, is a verbal exercise that must be performed with extraordinary skill if it is to be attractive. Affectations are rarely attractive, rarely effective. To be natural is to be yourself, not a poseur; to give the reader the best of yourself, instead of re-warming the baked meats of yesterday. Quotations-which are second-hand thoughts-will serve occasionally when the thing you want to say has been said so well by another that it would be waste of energy to try to say it better; gut, as a rule, the utterance of the writer himself is more interesting than the quotation, because the writer brings something of himself to bear on the subject, and for the moment is more in touch with the reader than any dear departed author. Therefore, say things as best you can in your own way, neither in borrowed words nor in the phraseology that mimics another. Write as if you were speaking to a person whom you desire to persuade or convince. You will then write better than you speak, because, in the first place, you can be more deliberate, and, secondly, you can revise what you have written. Speaking and writing are similar mental acts, with a difference: the difference between eating food raw and eating it cooked. THE operation of a blast furnace is dependent to an important extent upon the sulphur content of materials charged and the desired limit of sulphur in the product. It has long been known that the blast furnace is the most efficient tool for desulphurization in common use and that this efficiency is associated with the strongly reducing conditions of the hearth and is enhanced by increased basicity and fluidity of the slag. The chemical reactions of desulphurization may be studied from the viewpoint of the ratio of the process or of the final equilibrium conditions. Both kinds of studies contribute to an understanding of the process and both are included here. A simple measure of the desulphurization power of a slag is given by the ratio: Pct sulphur in slag (Pet S) Pct sulphur in metal [Pct S] This ratio was used by Holbrook and Joseph',' to measure relative desulphurizing powers under controlled laboratory conditions. It was also used by Hatch and Chipman3 as a measure of the equilibrium distribution. For the latter purpose it would be preferable to employ thermodynamic activities rather than percentages, but until very recently this has been impossible for lack of data. Now, thanks to the work of Morris and Williams and Morris and Buehl," the effects of carbon and silicon upon the activity of sulphur in the metal are known. The confirmation of this work and its extension to include the effects of other elements by Sherman and Chipman and by Rosenqvist and Cox' make it possible to calculate the activity of sulphur in pig iron of any composition. Hence it is now possible to use data on the equilibrium distribution of sulphur to find its activity in the liquid slag and to approach an ultimate solution of the thermodynamic aspects of the problem. The rate of transfer of sulphur from metal to slag is the problem of major industrial importance and indeed the principal need for equilibrium data has been as a necessary adjunct to the kinetic studies. The rate of approach to equilibrium under laboratory conditions seems slow compared to the requirements of industrial practice, and it is clear that further laboratory studies of rates are needed. In the research reported below, the items which were investigated were the following: I—The role of mechanical stirring on the approach to equilibrium. 2—The role of MgO in desulphurization as compared to CaO. 3—The role of MnO in desulphurization. 4— The limiting reactions which constitute the slow steps in desulphurization. Experimental Procedure The experimental set-up and procedure previously described by Hatch and Chipman" were essentially followed with several small modifications. The graphite crucible containing the slag and metal charge was altered to provide considerably more active stirring and mixing of the slag and metal in the carbon monoxide atmosphere. For this purpose the crucible was machined to provide two deep cylindrical wells which were interconnected at top and bottom as shown in Fig. 1. A graphite screw with a flat thread and of shallow pitch (4 threads per in.) spinning at 600 to 800 rpm was used to lift the slag and metal over the partition between the two wells and throw them over into the second well, where the metal settled through the slag into the reservoir at the bottom. It was possible to see actual particles of slag and metal being thrown over the partition. In this respect, the stirring was more vigorous than used in the work of Hatch and Chipman. A charge of 400 g of wash metal was first melted, and 20 g of FeS was then added to yield a bath containing 1.65 pct S. Immediately 400 g of slag (as pure mixed oxides) was added and fused. The slag was generally fused in 1 hr * 10 min. Within 30 to 45 min after melting, the temperature was adjusted to 1525"C, and the first slag and metal samples were taken. The slag was picked up on the end of a cold Armco iron rod, whereas the metal was sucked into a silica tube. The wash metal composition was (in percent): 4.29 C; 0.022 S; 0.021 P; 0.38 Si. The slags used were of four fixed starting compositions covering a wide range of acid-base ratios shown in Table I. Deliberate variations in MgO were made in these slags to check the role of MgO in blast-furnace desulphurization. Changes due to additions and reactions were followed by analysis of samples. IN THE year just past there were produced in the United States about 170,000,000 tons of sand and gravel. Much of this was pit-run material used for gravelling roads and as railroad ballast on lines that did not carry heavy traffic. But more than half of it was marketed as washed and sized, or graded, material. The methods used for preparing sand and gravel for the market have long been used in ore dressing and, as in ore dressing, depend on differences in the specific gravity of two substances or in the size or weight of particles. But many changes in the design and operation of plants and machines have been necessary. In ore dressing, the concentrate is only a small part of the feed; in sand and gravel washing, it is much the larger part of the feed. In addition, such close work as is needed when con¬centrating a metallic ore is not needed when washing gravel; the ability to put through a large tonnage is more important, and sizing, which is only a preliminary process in ore dressing, is an end to be attained. Rock crushers are found in most sand and gravel plants and they are used to break up the larger pieces from the deposit (known as boulders and cobbles) which are removed by a scalping screen. The crusher discharge is usually sent back to the scalping screen, the perforations in this screen setting the maximum size of the finished product.

The reactively sputtered silicon dioxide capacitor -was developed for use in the monolithic integrated circuit, thereby requiring the capacitor to be fabricated on an oxidized silicon slice. The silicon dioxide film is formed by reactively sputtering silicon in a 50 pct Ar-50 pct 0, atmosphere and the physical properties are indistinguishable from silica. A practical upper limit of capacitance per unit area of 0.25 pf per sq mil is reached with the capacitors fabricated from the Si0, film. Methods shown to enhance this value are double stacking the thin-film capacitors and addition of aluminum to the silicon cathode during sputtering to form an aluminosilicate dielectric. A major contribution to the field of diffused integrated circuits would be the addition of auxiliary passive devices for replacement of diffused passive devices which are currently being fabricated for many integrated circuits. This accomplishment would increase the flexibility of the diffusion process in order to concentrate more on transistor parameters rather than on fabricating diffused resistors and capacitors. To pursue this technique, a thin-film SiOz capacitor was developed which has _ proven applicable to many integrated circuits. Although the SiOl capacitor has an application, the major deterrent from extending the integrated circuit into many useful areas such as low-frequency linear application is the low dielectric constant of SiO, and the low usable capacitance in an integrated circuit. This paper will cover the sputtering techniques used for forming the SiO, film, the physical and electrical properties of sputtered SiO,, and yield information concerning the application of these capacitors to integrated circuits. REACTIVE SPUTTERING Reactive sputtering is simply the sputtering of a metal or semiconductor in glow discharge in the presence of a reactive gas. The material to be sputtered is seen in Fig. 1 as the cathode of the system and is bombarded with positively charged ions of the ambient gas. In this investigation, the ambient gas is composed of 50 pct Ar and 50 pct O2 at a pressure of approximately 2.5 X l0-' Torr. The ions are accelerated toward the cathode in the cathode dark space by the electric field and upon striking the cathode effect a momentum energy transfer to the surface atoms. The transferred energy is sufficient to dislodge a surface atom or atoms and these particles diffuse through the glow discharge to the collector or anode. Several mechanisms of oxidation in the reaction chamber can be considered during reactive sputtering. 1) The surface of the cathode is oxidized and the oxide is subsequently sputtered. 2) Oxidation and sputtering occur simultaneously. 3) Sputtering of the cathode material is followed

PRODUCTION of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 6oo,ooo lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgCO3), usually is associated with limestone (CaCO3) and dolomite (MgCO3CaCO3). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amorphous) forms.2 The more common crystalline mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedral crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories. The deposits are extensive, some veins being hundreds of feet wide. The boundaries of the veins are indefinite, and the magnesite is interfingered with dolomite. Calcite, talc, serpentine, quartz and shale are disseminated through the deposits. The quality of the ore cannot be determined by appearance or by simple tests; chemical analysis is required. These features make it difficult to determine the boundaries or total quantity of workable ore.3 Only the higher-grade ores are mined, and a considerable proportion of the magnesite content is discarded by hand-sorting and log-washing methods. After calcining, the sorted product meets the specifications for usual refractory material, as it contains approximately 81 per cent MgO, 7 per cent Si02, 6 per cent CaO and 6 per cent Fe203 + A1203. A sample of the reject material had the following analysis after calcining: 65.4 per cent MgO, 6.3 CaO, 21.1 Si02 and 6.5 R203. The percentage reported as R203 includes compounds whose chlorides are acid-soluble but give precipitates in ammoniacal solution that are ignited and weighed. The more common constituents are Fe203, A1203 and Ti02. The sorted magnesite product is not the best grade, even for refractory purposes, and leaves much to be desired for a reduction process. The rejected material contains a large proportion of magnesite. It is apparent that an effective concentration method would yield a higher recovery and a better product. MUCH has been published on highly technical phases of grinding. Very little has been written on how a mill man can improve his operations by determining the optimum size assortment of grinding balls that should be added as a makeup charge. This ball rationing is not to be confused with the ball ration used as an initial charge when the mill is started up. Ball rationing is considered for one or more of the following purposes: 1) to increase throughput of the mill, 2) to reduce the power required per ton of ore ground to the desired size, 3) to reduce steel consumption per ton of ore ground, 4) to improve product size, and 5) to lower retention time of ore in the mill.

THE basic problem in the generation of water gas from carbonaceous fuels and steam is the supply of the heat of reaction, and in general the source of this heat is the combustion of a further quantity of carbon with oxygen. Existing and proposed processes for complete gasification differ in the methods employed for transferring this heat to the fuel, and involve one or other of the following alternatives: 1. Use of a steam-oxygen mixture as the gasifying medium, so that the combustion and gasification reactions are combined. 2. Alternate passage of air and steam through a fixed bed, as in conventional water-gas production. 3. Cyclic passage of fluidized fuel through combustion and gasification zones. 4. Intense preheating of steam and of a portion of the gas made, and recirculation of this mixture through the fuel bed. 5. Supply of heat to the fuel bed through an externally heated wall. Except for the conventional water-gas process using large coke or low- volatile coal, only processes in the first group, operating with steam and oxygen, have proved practicable with fuels other than brown coals and lignites. A possible exception, which has not so far reached a commercial scale, is the moving-burden process developed by Imperial Chemical Indus- tries, Ltd. The cost of industrial oxygen is so high that its use can probably be justified only if it is attended by substantial savings in other directions; for instance, the use of cheap fuel. In the United Kingdom, no very cheap solid fuels are available, and it is unlikely that an oxygen-gasification process could compete economically with conventional production of blue water gas from coke. Hence particular interest attaches to all possibilities of making water gas without using oxygen, if any possible saving in fuel or other costs is involved. The cheapest and most abundant coals in the United Kingdom are the low-rank noncaking bituminous coals in small and ungraded sizes, typically those from the East Midlands coal field, and-fines of high ash content produced in coal-cleaning operations. "Butte originated as a placer mining camp. The first gold discovery was made in the year 1864, near what is now Main Street. Placer mining was vigorously prosecuted along Silver Bow Creek and in Missoula, Buffalo, Town and Parrot gulches for a period of five years, at the end of which time, in 1870, the camp was practically deserted. In the meantime, the quartz veins so prominently traceable over the hillsides were located, the first location being made by W. L. Farlin and called the Black Chief claim, and later restaked as the Travona. Reasoning from the presence of the gold placers, free-milling gold ores were eagerly looked for by the early prospectors. Claims covering the great Rainbow and other silver lodes were located in the sixties. The presence of valuable silver ores in these veins caused the staking out of many claims, believed to be valuable only for silver, but which later proved to be enormous copper producers.Treatment of these early discovered rich ores was first attempted in arrastres. Later, stamp mills were built. The Centennial dropping 10 stamps, was the first, and in 1875 Mr. Farlin built the Dexter 10-stamp mill, intro¬ducing chloridizing-roasting. More successful processes were soon introduced and several large mills built, among which were the Alice, Lexington, Silver Bow, Moulton and Bluebird, in all representing a total of 290 stamps. The silver mining industry reached its zenith in 1887 and declined rapidly in the early nineties, following the sudden drop in the price of silver in 1892.During this period of silver mining activity the business of copper mining was making rapid strides. Development of the veins, located as silver veins, had uncovered copper ore in many instances. There was great activity in ""claim staking'' in the years from 1871 to 1879, during which period most of the claims covering the present productive copper area were located."

The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto theCu2S was identified as the double salt CU(DPG)2SO4.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuS04.3Cu(0H)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

Mineral pigments give color, opacity, or body to paint, stucco, plaster, mortar, cement, linoleum, rubber, and similar materials. They must be finely divided, substantially insoluble, and generally inert for such uses. Inorganic pigments may be grouped somewhat arbitrarily as follows: A. Natural mineral pigments dug from the earth. 1. Those consisting mostly of iron oxides, such as hematite and limonite. 2. Those containing large amounts of clay or noncoloring matter, such as ocher, sienna, umber, and colored shales. 3. Those whose color is not due to iron oxide, such as Vandyke brown (including sap brown, an alkali extract of Vandyke brown), graphite, and terre verte. B. Synthetic pigments. 1. Those containing iron oxide as the essential coloring matter, such as "pure" reds, yellows, and blacks, and Venetian reds. 2. Those not containing iron oxide, but rather such compounds as lithopone, zinc white, titanium white, ultramarine, Prussian blue, and the like. Only groups A and B-1 are discussed here. All the pigments in those two categories, except Vandyke brown, sap brown, and some of the carbonaceous slates, contain, as their essential color constituents, one or more compounds of iron; namely, an oxide-limonite (2Fe2O3.H2O to Fe2O3.4H20), hematite (Fe2O3), or magnetite (Fe2O3.FeO). Man's first permanent coloring materials were earth pigments-the ochers, iron oxides, and various iron-stained clays. The caves occupied by prehistoric man and the arts of the ancient Chaldean, Egyptian, and Cretan civilizations bear mute witness to this and also testify to the beauty and permanence of earth colors. As the Roman era developed, earth pigments were pushed from their pre-eminent position by white lead and red lead and in the Middle Ages by zinc oxide. Today, of course, the number of acceptable pigments is very large and on a value basis the group of natural and synthetic earth pigments stands forth with $16,000,000 per year; it is surpassed by titanium, lead and zinc pigments. Of this sum,21 natural pigments supplied 31 pct of the tonnage and 16 pct of the value of the total finished pigment in 1957, the remainder representing the tonnage and value of sales of the synthetic iron oxide colors. The average value of finished natural pigments in 1958 was $80.62 per ton. The average value of manufactured pigments in the same year was $202 per ton. Of the 60,000 tons of manufactured colored pigments sold in 1958, the reds comprised 76 pct of the market and the yellows 20 pct. The reds furnished 68 pct of the value and the yellows 24 pct. Of the finished iron oxide pigments (natural and manufactured) sold in 1958, the reds dominated the market with 66 pct of the quantity and 63 pct of the value; yellows supplied 17 pct of the quantity and 20 pct of the value, and browns furnished 11 pct of the quantity and 10 pct of the value. The average value of the reds was approximately $152, and the average value of the yellows $190 per ton. The highest valued pigment in 1958, with almost 12 pct of the total tonnage and 21 pct of the value of the iron oxide pigment market, was manufactured red from calcined copperas valued at $286 per ton.

The effects of hydrostatic pressure up to 400 ksi at 25" to 300°C on the mechanical properties of three forms of commercial beryllium (hot-pressed block, extruded rod and cross-rolled sheet) were investigated. Three effects of pressure were studied: mechanical beharior under pressure, the effect of pressure-cycling, and the effect of tensile prestraining under hydrostatic pressure on the subsequent tensile properties at atmospheric pressure. For all three materials the ductility increased with pressure whereas the flow stress did not appear to be significantly influenced by pressure. An increase in the subsequent atmospheric pressure yield strength generally occurred as a result of pressure-cycling or prestraining under pressure, whereas either no change or a decrease in ductility occurred. The only exception to this was sheet material, which exhibited some improvement in ductility following a pressure-cycle treatment of 304 ksi pressure. The effects of pressure-cycling and prestraining were relatively independent of the temperature at which they were conducted. Stabilized cracks of the (0001) type were found in hot-pressed specimens and {1120) type in extruded and sheet specimens following straining under pressure. Also, pyramidal slip with a vector out of the basal plane, presumably c + a, was identified by electron transmission microscopy for extruded rod and for sheet strained under pressure. Small loops similar to those previously reported were found after straining at pressures of the order of 300 ksi. THE use of beryllium in structures is limited because of its poor ductility under certain conditions. Therefore, one objective of the present research was to determine if the ductility of beryllium at atmospheric pressure could be improved by prior pressure-cycling or prestraining under hydrostatic pressure. Another objective was to study the mechanisms associated with the plastic flow and fracture of the polycrystalline form of this metal with pressure as an additional variable. Since the early work of Bridgman,1 it has been recognized that many materials which are brittle at atmospheric pressure exhibit appreciable ductility when strained under high hydrostatic pressure. This effect has been reported for beryllium by Stack and Bob-rowsky2 and by Carpentier et al.3 and has been attributed to the operation of pyramidal slip systems with slip vectors inclined to the basal plane while cleavage or fracture is suppressed.4 That such slip may occur simply by the application of pressure alone without external straining (pressure-cycling) is suggested by the results on polycrystalline zinc5 and polycrystalline beryllium,6 where nonbasal dislocations with a vector (1123) were reported. A significant improvement in the ductility of the bee metal chromium by pressure-cycling has been reported.7 On the other hand, limited studies on the pressure-cycling of the hcp metals zinc67819 and beryllium6 indicated no improvement in ductility; there only occurred an increase in the yield and ultimate strengths. The study on beryllium was limited to hot-pressed material. Consequently, additional studies on the effects of pressure-cycling on other forms of beryllium seemed desirable, especially since for chromium some authors10 have been unable to detect any improvement in ductility while others find a large improvement.7 That the ductility of polycrystalline beryllium at atmospheric pressure might be improved by prior straining under hydrostatic pressure was suggested by the known beneficial effects of cold work on the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature in the bee metals. It was reasoned that, by straining under hydrostatic pressure, fracture would be suppressed, and during the propagation of slip from one grain to its neighbor dislocations with a vector inclined to the basal plane"-'4 would operate. Upon subsequent straining at atmospheric pressure, these dislocations with a nonbasal vector would continue to operate and thereby reduce the tendency for fracture to occur, by assisting in the propagation of slip across grain boundaries and by interacting with any cracks that may develop. It was recognized that maximum improvement in ductility would probably occur at some optimum amount of prestrain under hydrostatic pressure. If the pre-strain was too small, an insufficient number of dislocations with a nonbasal vector would be activated; if it was too large, internal stresses (work hardening) might increase the flow stress more than the fracture stress, or incipient cracks or other damage could develop. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1) Materials and Specimen Preparation. The materials employed in this investigation consisted of hot-pressed block (General Astrometals, CR grade), extruded rod (General Astrometals, GB-2 grade with a reduction ratio of 8:1), and cross-rolled sheet (Brush S200, 0.065 in. thick). The analyses of these materials and mechanical properties at room temperature and atmospheric pressure are given in Table I. The grain size of the hot-pressed block was 15 to 16 µ, that of the extruded rod 10 to 11 µ, and that of the sheet 7 to 10 µ in the rolling plane and 5 to 6 µ in the thickness, all determined by the linear intercept method. Reconstruction of the British mining industry began shortly after nationalization in 1947 and continued until well into the 1950s with the support of the government. This support diminished as plentiful supplies of cheap oil from the Middle East made many coal mines uneconomic. The planned rundown which followed was foreshadowed in the 1965 White Paper which outlined financial measures to speed the closure of uneconomic collieries. The decline appeared likely to continue into the 21st century as the role of coal in UK energy requirements became less and less significant. This policy was well on course in 1973 when the oil crisis led to a complete reappraisal of the position. A government examination in 1974 of the coal industry then supported the National Coal Board's general strategy of major capital investment as set out in its 'Plan for Coal'. The plan was aimed at halting the intended decline in the industry's capacity and restoring it to 120 million tons of deep mined output in 1985. The plan proposed action along the following lines: Increase output by major investment in construction at existing collieries with sufficient reserves to give 13 million tons per annum extra output.

The initial yielding characteristics of a vacuum-melted iron have been measured as a function of thertnal history after slow cooling or quenching from a 700°C recrystallizntion anneal. A thermal history favoring the segregation of interstitials to grairz boundaries results in a material having high values of upper and lower yield stress and long, irregutar Luders' plateaus, wheueas specimens treated to minimize grain boundary segregation have significantly lower values of these yielding characteristics. The struc- ture of typical grain boundary areas as revealed by electron transmission microscopy is consistent with these findings. The grain boundaries in iron are considered to be principally responsible for the release of dislocations during macroscopic yielding and it is suggested that strong locking results when a substantial amount of grain boundary segregution is present; it follows that weak locking results from a more random distribution of interstitials to grown in dislocations. THE Lucy furnace, owned by Messrs. Carnegie, Kloman & Co., and located on the Alleghany River, on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, is a splendid modern furnace, 75 feet high, and 20 feet bosh. She had been working well on low grade ores of about 50 per cent., producing daily 68 to 75 tons. There was on stock 500 tons of Republic ore, one of the purest and best of the Lake Superior ores, averaging over 68 per cent. of iron, which had been procured for the purpose of making a trial for Bessemer iron. This was charged by itself, and Mr. Skelding, the founder, reports that he did not succeed in getting a single cast when it came down, before the furnace chilled from the hearth to the top of the boshes, some 25 feet. This is a presentation of the diffusivity theory for the calculation of the water drive on an oil reservoir in which the history of reservoir pressure with time are the essential parameters for the determination of the rate and cumulative water encroachment into a field. The main body of the paper is essentially the application of the principles underlined here to actual field data. It consists of the work plots of the radial-flow case, and includes a discussion of an illustrated problem for which the water-drive calculations are treated in conjunction with the volumetric-balance equation. The appendix is a mathematical treatment of the linear, radial, and spherical cases of water influx into a reservoir. Introduction The evaluation of oil reserves and the prediction of pressure behavior with different rates of production are related to the volumetric balance of the fluids entering and leaving the space occupied by the oil and gas originally present in the formation; that is to say, important information can be gleaned from a volumetric study of the oil, gas, and water produced from a formation as it affects the extent of change in volume of oil zone, the gas cap, and the amount of water influx from the adjoining water sands. It is not the purpose of this paper to enter into a discussion of the equation of volumetric balance, in which such pertinent information as subsurface sampling and the measurement of reservoir pressures play a predominant part, as this has been discussed in detail by others.1,2 However, there is an inherent difficulty that has limited the general application of this equation to a study of oil reservoirs; that is, the insufficient knowledge of the analytics for expressing the water drive on a field as a function of reservoir pressure. This to a large degree has been overcome and it is the purpose of this paper to present this theory in such form as to be applicable for reservoir calculations. Water Drive If the amount of oil originally in place and the gas space are known, it is a relatively simple matter to determine, by the volumetric equation, the cumulative water influx into a reservoir from the adjoining water sands. EVIDENCE has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its "Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,1-12 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends-including coals numbered I to 55b, inclusive -which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or I8-in. cylindrical retorts." In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash; from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from o.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the go coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.
