The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sample type in a geo-chemical exploration program. Various controlled and ambient tests were undertaken to evaluate the performance of a variety of digital heat stress monitors, psychrometers and simpler temperature/relative humidity data loggers that measure, or determine, such parameters as: dry-bulb, natural wet-bulb, psychrometric wet-bulb and globe temperatures. In this comparison, funded by the Deep Mining Research Consortium, it has been found that all the instruments can competently measure dry-bulb temperature but the accuracy of other sensors could introduce significant uncertainty. For example the quality of relative humidity sensors and failure to correct for the barometric pressure difference in deep mines, directly impacts upon the calculation of psychrometric wet-bulb. The comparison has shown that the response of dry-bulb and globe temperature sensors can vary widely under different radiant heat conditions; however this would be negligible in most mines. Of more concern is the differing performance of the natural-wet bulb sensors especially at low relative humidity and low air velocity. Furthermore, from these tests and the currently available theory it was not possible to determine if any of the natural-wet bulb instruments measured that value correctly or validate any relationship between psychrometric and natural wet-bulb temperature at low air speeds where their difference is greatest. Consequently the uninformed use of some of the commercially available environmental heat stress monitors or derivations from other instruments could provide erroneous results affecting the work load category that can be accommodated or the rest ratio regime required.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made in this investigation for determination of Eh in solutions containing sulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. In addition, the sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in sulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration of sulfide ions. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion, HS-, concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion, S-, activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of sulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

Shale gas wells can sometimes drill through coal reserves. Hypothetically, the caving of the gob from longwall coal mines may deform the shale gas well casing and potentially result in a breach. NIOSH researchers studied the permeability of the surrounding ground strata that may affect the potential for an inflow of gas into an underground mine environment. An overview and comparison of measured permeability values under differing cover depths (147 m and 353 m to the Pittsburgh coal seam) and mining cycle phase will be presented and discussed in this report. The findings highlight data-driven experimental evidence that affect the interaction between gas wells extraction and mining operations that may lead to potentially hazardous environments.

In 1968, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded S.S. Mullen Construction of Seattle, the Intake Tunnel (488 m by 4 m diameter tunnel) and Pumping Plant No. 1. In1998, the Southern Nevada Water Authority awarded Lake Mead Constructors (Kiewit of Omaha) a parallel New Intake Tunnel (518 m long by 4.6 m diameter tunnel) and Pumping Plant. Both projects provide water to a thirsty Las Vegas. This paper presents a detailed comparison of the two intake tunnels in terms of grout takes and pressures, geologic mapping and rock quality, grout penetration beyond the excavation line, degree of fracture grouting, and groundwater inflow boundary considerations. The paper provides a comparison of grouting techniques and material developments then and now.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km and be lined using a precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT liner was grouted through ports drilled in the segments. The Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) in Cleveland will extend approximately 2.93 km long and will be lined by using a similar precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 7,620 mm and external diameter of 8,230 mm. The WST liner was grouted using both grout ports built into the tail can of the TBM and through segments. Each tunnel was mined primarily in shale with varying levels of weathering and both tunnels had dry and wet sections. This paper will document the means and methods for grouting in each tunnel as well as the methods utilized to proof grout and the results found.

INTRODUCTION Heat stress continues to be a safety concern in underground mining. This is due to a number of reasons including increasing depths of mining, increased levels of heat generated from machines, ventilation systems being constrained from providing suitable levels of airflow and others. In order to assess if a thermal environment is safe for miners under normal or modified work arrangements, or to specify stop work conditions a heat stress index is used to guide decisions. Historically, a number of heat stress indices have been developed and applied in underground mines. These can be classed under three broad headings; single measurement, empirically based and rational indices. Do any of these indices perform better than the others? Which one allows simple determinations and decisions to be made in the mine? This paper aims to provide answers to these questions by comparing and contrasting three indices; effective temperature (ET), simple air cooling power (ACP) and Thermal work limit (TWL) for a range of typical mining wet and dry bulb combinations? The paper concludes with the identification of areas for future research. BACKGROUND Heat stress causes discomfort, increases physiological strain, decreases productivity and performance, and contributes to increased incidents [1]. Effective management and control of heat stress is particularly important in mining where hot working conditions are very common [2]. Heat stress index is a common indicator that is used by mine safety advisors and managers to guide decisions about safe work practices in mining under normal or modified conditions. According to Howes and Nixon [3] A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: • Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. • Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environmental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. • A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The link between these elements is an environmental measure that reflects the physiological strain a worker is subjected to. Since the turn of the twentieth century various indices of thermal stress have been developed (McPherson [4], Howes and Nixon [3], Brake [5]). In selecting a suitable environmental measure or index one problem that must be addressed is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to it accurately reflecting the physiological strain. No index can be universally applied and there is no single correct measure or index. However if an index has provided adequate control in a particular circumstance, then it can be regarded as correct for that situation.

This paper presents a comparison study done at VTT's new pilot plant facilities in Outokumpu, Finland, for chromite ore. The ore was ground in a rod mill -, a ball mill - and high pressure roller mill - ball mill circuit in the capacity range of 0.5 - 3.0 t / h. The main grinding characteristics are discussed and the quality of the products are compared from the mineralogical point of view. The benefits of high pressure roller mill comminution for further mineral processing of chromite is also discussed.

A comparison of hydraulic shovels (HS) versus front-end loaders (FEL) is commonly made when an excavator with some degree of mobility and medium reach is required. These applications are often found in hard rock open pit and surface coal mining applications, among others. The purpose of this paper is to present a comparative economic study of the two excavators. Production data was collected from both HS and FEL manufacturers as well as operating mines. Availability, operating costs, and estimated operating life were gathered from operating mines, while capital costs were obtained from manufacturers. The data was limited to studies and operations which included both types of mid-size excavators. The economic study is followed by a discussion of other factors considered by mine operators in excavator selection. The study was originally made for a presentation at the 23rd Intermountain Minerals Conference at Vail, CO.

Introduction A problem that has faced mining engineers and mining geologists for many years is how to best explore a particular prospect so that the basic decision as to whether the material present is ore or only high-grade rock can be made with some confidence. It is obvious that one could not begin a large scale mining program on the basis of tests made on a few hand samples. On the other hand, one could not be 100 percent certain as to the average grade or tonnage before beginning development, as this would require the orebody to be mined out in the sampling process. The basic objectives of the exploration program can be stated as (1) to reduce mining risk; (2) to lessen the cost of development; and (3) to increase the profits of mining. The exploration program should be terminated when these objectives are no longer being met. The construction of tunnels is a specific mining operation. In the exploration program one should gather the data needed to determine (1) the type of excavation technique(s) to be used; and (2) the rate of advance that might be expected. As in the evaluation of an orebody, with the data collected it should be possible to estimate mining costs and project life. Unfortunately, at the present time, it is not possible to do this at least when dealing with medium to hard rock types. The reason for this, it is felt, is basically the inability to identify what specific rock mass properties are of use in tunnel design and to specify how these may be obtained in an exploration program. A model incorporating rate and residence time to describe the froth flotation process was used to provide data for the evaluation of various kinetic flotation models and to provide scale-up information from laboratory to industrial scale coal froth flotation. Rate constants were determined in laboratory and plant froth flotation tests and the residence time distribution was measured for a bank of four 21 ft 3 (0.6 m3 ) WEMCO cells treating Upper Freeport seam coal and a bank of four 300 ft 3 (8.5 m3 ) cells treating Lower Kittanning seam coal. It was found that a lag time for continuous flotation should be incorporated into scale up models and that a kinetic froth factor ratio of between about 2.0 and 2.8 should also be used to scale up data from laboratory to plant scale.

Technology plays an ever-increasing role in improving the safety and efficiency of mining operations. Laser scanning and photogrammetry are two useful methods for capturing 3D digital representations of real world objects. While both technologies have been applied to the mining industry in numerous ways, the practical applications in an operating underground limestone mine has been tested for this paper, including for visualization and site characterization. Each technology is capable of creating highly detailed geospatial point clouds, but are all point clouds created equal? This paper presents a comparison of a laser scan and photogrammetry of a limestone pillar and addresses the strengths and limitations of each method for creating digital models of operating underground limestone mines. INTRODUCTION The United States crushed stone business is a ~$14 billion per year industry representing 1,430 companies which operate 3,782 mining operations across the 50 states. In 2017 alone, 1.33 billion tons of crushed stone was produced with 76% used predominately for road construction and repairs, but also for the production of cement, lime, chemical and agricultural uses. Over 70% of domestic crushed stone producers source their material from limestone and dolomite deposits, with currently only 82 mines (2%) operating underground (USGS, 2018). Underground mining requires a different technical skillset, and poses great challenges for production that must be both safe and economical. Therefore, there are many risks that an operation must mitigate in order to produce underground limestone. Some of the challenges in underground limestone mining involve geological hazards that are unique to the rest of the industry. The geologic features such as faults and weaknesses can be difficult to assess in a production environment (NIOSH, 1998). The consequences of failure due to improperly designed underground mining ground support systems, such as from a roof failure, are not only life threatening for the miners themselves, but can easily shut down an entire mining operation.

To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations.

Methane ignitions continue to be a major concern to the longwall mining industry. In spite of numerous advances in technology over the past decade, there has not been a measurable reduction in the number of longwall face ignitions. These ignitions will continue to be a problem as deeper and gassier seams are mined, as production rates are increased through numerous improvements in longwall mining equipment, and as the output of the workforce increases due to improved management-labor relations. It is necessary to know methane liberations, emissions, and flow patterns in order to effectively deal with it and to design control technology to reduce the occurrence of longwall face ignitions. A cooperative research project between the Bureau of Mines and the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) has been established to address longwall methane problems. The initial direction of this work was to look at methane flow patterns during the entire longwall mining process, and more specifically to examine and compare methane levels and flow patterns for advance and retreat methods of longwall mining. Both advance and retreat longwall mining is practiced in the Sydney coal fields in Nova Scotia. In 1986, a study was performed on advancing longwall panels at the Lingan Colliery, and a similar study was recently completed at the Phalen Colliery on a retreating panel. Methane monitors were placed at various locations along the face, intake, return, and bleeder airways. Handheld methane monitors were also used upstream and downstream of the shearer mining machine. This setup allowed a determination of methane sources on the longwall panels, including: liberation from cutting with the shearer mining machine, emissions from the coal seam along the face, emissions from the gob area, and methane already in the intake air. The results from both studies are reported and the differences between the two longwall mining methods compared.

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the U.S. has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms.

INTRODUCTION Standards limiting the annual exposure of United States uranium miners to radon daughters were established in 1967 at 12 Working-Level-Months (WLM). The standard was reduced by a factor of three, to 4 WLM, in 1971. Currently, the standard is again being examined to determine if it should be changed. Since 1967, Union Carbide has calculated individual monthly exposures in company and contract-operated mines located on the Colorado Plateau. Although it has been possible, by extensive ventilation control measures and accurate routine sampling, to meet the current exposure standard, there are many miners whose exposures closely approach the 4 WLM standard for any given year. However, it was noted that for miners who work for any extended period of years the [average] exposure was much less than the standard. The primary purpose of this paper is to show that, in effect, any annual exposure standard to radon daughters results in a long-term exposure considerably below that standard. Further, most miners, due to their job assignments and/or employment habits, only receive a small fraction of the standard. HISTORY OF EXPOSURE STANDARDS Prior to 1967, radiation protection in uranium mines was fundamentally based on a radon daughter concentration guide. In 1960, the American Standards Association published mine and mill radiation protection standards (ASA-1960). The Colorado Department of Mines, in 1961, adoped a standard which followed the ASA Standard and provided that if concentrations exceeded 10 Working Levels (WL), the area was to be shut down until corrective action was taken; if between 3 and 10 WL, corrective action was to be initiated; between 1 and 3, additional samples were to be taken and individual exposures evaluated; and if below 1 WL, conditions were considered to be controlled. In 1967, the U.S. Department of Labor issued the first exposure standard which called originally for limiting annual exposures to 3.6 WLM but which was later changed to 12 WLM. The complicated regulatory developments leading to this standard have been described elsewhere (Beverly-1969, Rock & Walker-1970). Effective July 1, 1971, this exposure standard was lowered to 4 WLM per year, which is the current standard. Over the past year, there has been speculation about the potential risk to uranium miners working at the present standard. A recent NIOSH Study Group Report (NIOSH-1980) concluded: "There is also strong evidence that a substantial risk extends to and below 120 WLM of exposure." The 120 WLM corresponds to a miner working in uranium mines for 30 years, a rare occurrence, at an exposure rate of 4 WLM per year, an even rarer occurrence. On the other hand, the General Accounting Office, in a recent Report to the Congress (GAO-1981), was very critical of reports by NIOSH on general low-level radiation risks. The GAO recognized that”...important questions remain unanswered about the cancer risks of low-level ionizing radiation exposure;" and recommended that Congress enact legislation giving statutory authority to an interagency committee to coordinate Federal research on health effects of ionizing radiation exposure. The International Commission on Radiation Protection at its March, 1980 meeting recommended limiting the inhalation of radon daughters to 0.02 J per year, equivalent to 0.4 WL, which on an annual basis would be 4.8 WLM and noted it is common to reduce this figure by 20% for allowance in the case of uranium miners for external and/or dust exposure(Sowby-1980). This is essentially equal to the present standard of 4 WLM. As earlier uranium miner exposure studies are reevaluated, and as new studies are conducted, it is important that the relationship between regulatory standards and the resulting actual exposures be recognized. UNION CARBIDE URANIUM MINING EXPERIENCE Union Carbide started mining Colorado Plateau uranium-vanadium ores in the late 1920s for the contained vanadium values. In the early 1950s, the Atomic Energy Commission contracted Union Carbide to produce uranium at mills located in Uravan and Rifle, Colorado. The company now has over fifty years of mining experience in the area. Some mines are operated as company mines and others are operated by private mining companies under a contractual arrangement. Ventilation, sampling, and exposure calculations are carried out the same in contract mines as in company-operated mines. Data presented in this report do not differentiate between company or contract employees and include all employees who worked underground any portion of a year in Union Carbide mines from 1967 through 1980. At the peak of uranium mining activities in 1970, there were 577 miners employed at year end (285 company employees and 292 contract) and 52 mines in operation (8 company-operated and 44 contract mines). Contract mines varied from two-man operations up to 15 employees. Company mines were generally the larger operations and employed from 20 to 100 miners.

In addition to products available from private vendors, many useful programs are developed at universities - in fact, many of these programs led the way to commercial development. Other projects are assigned to consultants with backgrounds in system design and mining. Both types of development have led to programs that can be acquired for the cost of a tape or disk. This paper highlights several underground mining packages. These programs consist of: ? USBM model-developed by the United States Bureau of nines. ? INTRODUCTION In the USA regulatory agencies have adopted standards which limit the allowable concentration of ore dust in underground uranium mines. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value for silica which has been incorporated by reference in federal regulations (30 CFR 57, 1980). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) imposes a limit for unprocessed uranium ore dust for reducing the exposure to radioactive materials from inhalation (10 CFR 20, 1980). We have been unable to trace the origin of the NRC standard. Recently the ICRP has published recommendations concerning limits for intakes of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979). We have used the ICRP methodology to compute the dose equivalent commitment to lung and bone from inhalation of insoluble ore dust particles. These values were used to derive air concentrations which would provide an acceptable risk for induction of cancer from occupational exposure. Results indicate that the new ICRP recommendations are more restrictive than the present NRC standard for radioactivity. The maximum allowable dust load in a uranium mine will depend on both the concentration of silica (% Si02) and the amount of radioactivity (% U308). We have combined these standards assuming complete independence of biological hazard to establish boundary conditions for which either silica or radioactivity is the dominating factor. Based on these results we present suggestions for analysis of ore dust to insure compliance with regulatory agencies. SILICA STANDARDS Silicosis, fibrotic lung disease produced by crystalline silica, was one of the earliest forms of occupational disease to be recognized. The pulmonary lesions caused by silica, silicotic nodules, consist of concentrically arranged bundles of collagen fibers. Fusion of these nodules results in progressive massive fibrosis causing alveolar changes which decrease ventillation and blood flow in the lungs. The current Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for mineral dusts is based on the concentration of free silica. The standard is expressed in three forms: (1) Particle count standard: TLV (mppcf) = 300/(% Si02 + 10) (mppcf = million particles per cubic foot) (2) Respirable dust mass standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 10/(% respirable Si02 + 2) (3) Total dust standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 30/(% Si02 + 3) The most commonly used form is the respirable mass standard. These curent values for silica are based primarily on epidemilogical studies of Vermont granite workers and other occupationally exposed workers. In the Vermont study no cases of silicosis were seen in individuals employed after dust control measures were initiated and whose subsequent exposure averaged less than 5 mppcf. The free silica concentration in the airborne dust to which these workers were exposed averaged 25%. A concentration of 10 mppcf of granite dust is considered equivalent to 0.1 mg/m3 quartz. The current respirable mass standard allows a maximum silica concentration of 0.1 mg/m3. NIOSH (1974) has recommended a reduction in the current TLV for respirable silica to 0.05 mg/m3 Si02. As with radiation standards, the TLV for mineral dusts is an upper limit for time weighted average exposure. It is recommended that dust concentrations be maintained as far below the TLV as current practices permit. RADIATION STANDARDS The present concentration limit for airborne natural uranium in ore dust prior to chemical separation is 75 µg of uranium per m3 of air ( 10 CFR 20, 1980) . This corresponds to 1.85 Bq/m3 (50 pCi/m3 ) of natural uranium, U-238, U-235 and U-234 and is equivalent to 3.7 Bq/m3 (100 pCi/m3 ) of gross alpha activity with radioactive equilibrium between the long-lived alpha progeny through Ra-226. The origin or basis for this standard is not known, but it presumably includes both chemical toxicity and risk from somatic radiation injury. Recently the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977) has published recommendations concerning the objectives and criteria for limiting radiation exposures. This was followed b y a revision of the limits for intake of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979; ICRP, 1980). The previous compilation of limits for internal emitters was published by ICRP Committee II in 1959 (ICRP, 1959). INTRODUCTION How accurate are past and present employee radondaughter exposure records of underground uranium miners employed in the United States? This often-debated question is essential for future substantiation of safe exposure limits. An apparent discrepancy between company-reported exposures and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) projected exposures was detected in 1977. For these reasons a need for an updated comparison of these exposure data was indicated. This paper gives some of the conclusions of the earlier study and compares more recent exposure records compiled by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc., with projected exposures based on sampling by Federal mine inspectors. EARLIER STUDY In its 1977 Annual Report (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978), MSHA's predecessor, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), reported that there was "an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company records." Both company records and MESA's projections from samples taken during routine Federal inspections indicated reductions in the average exposure of underground uranium miners from 1975 to 1977, but the MESA projections were over 4 times higher than the company-reported averages. This apparent discrepancy however, was based on a comparison of exposure data reported for all U.S. underground uranium miners. This projection more closely represented the average exposure of U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked 1,500 hours or more during the year. Exposures of such workers are reported each year by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (AIF) in summaries of exposure data reported to the AIF by uranium mining companies throughout the United States. (The AIF exposure summary for 1979 appears as tables A-1 and A-2 in the appendix of this paper.) Assuming that the average exposure for each exposure range category is the midpoint of each exposure range category, table 1 compares the estimated average exposures for U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked underground 1,500 hours or more each year in 1975 through 1977 with the exposures projected by MESA for those years. Slade, 1977, explained some of the discrepancy between company records and MESA projections of miners' average radon-daughter exposures as follows: 1) Concentrations of radon daughters in some work areas can vary greatly during any one day. A variation from 0.3 WL to 17.0 WL has been measured in the same stope on the same day. 2) Seemingly simple abatement problems indicated by the regular Federal and State inspections were solved simply by manipulating the mine ventilation. 3) The methods used by mine operators to compute cumulative exposures were such that high radiation readings were seldom or never reflected in the records. For example, a work area sampled on Monday indicated a radon-daughter level equal to 0.2 WL and this was recorded. It was sampled again on Wednesday of the following week and the level was 2.2 WL. The miners were withdrawn or told to fix the ventilation, and when this was accomplished the area was sampled and found to be at 0.2 WL again. Although the miners could have been working in the higher concentration up to 6 days, this reading might never be reflected in their records. If it was recorded, only a fraction of the day on which it was discovered would be entered into the cumulative exposure calculation (time-weighted average). 4) Some of the mines visited used a mine average radiation concentration, and every employee working underground was given the same exposure per unit of time spent underground. As a result of the 1977 study, more stringent sampling and recordkeeping standards were proposed and public hearings held in 1977. The resulting new and revised health standards on radon-daughter sampling and exposure recordkeeping became effective August 30, 1979 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 1979). Prior to these new regulations, radondaughter sampling requirements were on an "as often as necessary" basis (Code of Federal Regulations, 1978). The new regulations required practically all active work areas in underground mines to be sampled at least once every 2 weeks, with many areas requiring weekly sampling. They also required calendar-year exposure records of all underground
