The Basalt Waste Isolation Project of the U.S. Department of Energy is a part of the National Was re Terminal Storage Program. Its mission is to assess the feasibility of siting a nuclear waste repository in the basalt formations which underlie the Hanford Site of the U.S. Department of Energy. The progress in all program areas is summarized in this paper. Activities conducted to date have led to the identification of possible repository candidate sites within the Hanford Site.

A test of retrievable geologic storage of spent fuel assemblies from an operating commercial nuclear reactor is underway at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) of the U.S. Department of Energy his generic test is located 420 m below the surface in the Climax granitic stock. Eleven canisters of spent fuel approximately 2.5 years out of reactor core (about 1.6 kW/canister thermal output) were emplaced in a storage drift along with 6 electrical simulator canisters. Two adjacent drifts contain electrical heaters, which are operated to simulate within the test array the thermal field of a large repository. Fuel was loaded during April-May 1980 and initial results of the test will be presented.

Staurolite, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is used industrially as a high value-in-use sandblasting agent, as a premium-grade foundry sand, and as the source of aluminum in portland cement manufacture in areas where the aluminum constituent is not economically available from shale or argillaceous limestone. Staurolite is produced by E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company as a coproduct of titanium mineral production in Florida, where it was first recovered on a commercial scale in 1952 from the Pleistocene sand deposit known as Trail Ridge. At this deposit it comprises about one-fifth of the heavy mineral suite, the principal other heavy minerals being ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, kyanite, sillimanite, and tourmaline. Staurolite and other nonconductive silicate heavy minerals are separated from the conductive titanium minerals on high-tension electrostatic separators. The silicates are then separated from one another magnetically, the staurolite being relatively magnetic. In the total process, 200 t of raw sand yield 7 t of heavy mineral concentrate from which about 1 t of staurolite is recovered. The staurolite concentrates have the characteristics given in Table 1. Staurolite concentrates are sold in three grades having the size distribution of subrounded grains shown in Table 2. All three grades are used in sandblasting for cleaning metal, for paint removal, and for cleaning masonry buildings. Staurolite compares favorably with lower priced abrasives, such as boiler slags and silica sand, in applications where the abrasive is used only once and is not recovered and recycled. Because it is hard, fine, clean, and dense it can reduce blasting time, and less material is required to clean a specific area. Compared to higher priced abrasives such as aluminum oxide and garnet, which are recycled, staurolite costs significantly less per kilogram and cleans at equal or faster rates. Its breakdown factor, which is a measure of recycling performance, is intermediate between those for aluminum oxide and garnet. [ ] [Tables 3 and 4] show the blast cleaning performance of the three staurolite grades compared to other abrasives. [Table 5] compares the longevity of premium priced abrasives during recycling. [Table 6] shows a cost comparison between silica sand and staurolite. Fringe benefits claimed for staurolite's use as an abrasive are: 1. Good flow properties and freedom from the lumps or slivers found in silica sand or boiler slag abrasives. 2. Low dusting affords good visibility, permits faster working, and reduces cleanup problems. 3. Heated storage is not required during freezing conditions, because the mineral is nonhygroscopic.

Belle Ayr Mine was established in 1972 as the first large surface coal mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. During the mid-1980s, it was eventually out-distanced in productivity by newer mines, and management recognized that the mine must recapitalize its major mining equipment and enhance its workforce flexibility in order to be competitive in the deteriorating market situation. Therefore, state-of-the-art haulage and loading equipment was placed into service, and a 12-hour rotating shift and a technician-based workforce was implemented. Belle Ayr Mine is located 29 km (18 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming, in Campbell County (Figure 1). The mine is a part of AMAX Coal West, Inc., and with its sister mine, Eagle Butte, located 8 km (5 miles) north of Gillette, is a major contributor to the overall coal production of AMAX Coal Industries, Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas. This paper addresses mine planning, recapitalization initiatives, and innovative workforce changes which propelled this large, surface coal mine to the forefront of productivity in the ever tightening low sulphur coal market.

Estimating groundwater inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies for estimating steady-state groundwater inflows into deep rock tunnels. The case studies included the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels. In this paper, statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations. A semi-empirical procedure was utilized for estimating groundwater inflows into these deep rock tunnels. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels which exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semi-empirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Packer test data plotted in histograms were observed in all cases to be log-normally distributed for the radial flow condition. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing irregularities in the distribution of the data and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable groundwater inflow estimates.

This paper describes the laboratory study which permitted an exploration of high grinding ball consumption in the secondary open circuit wet grinding mills at the Sidbec-Normines plant, Port Cartier, Québec. Corrosion undoubtedly exists but is of minor importance. Abrasion resulting from the physical nature of the company's iron concentrate is the main reason for the high ball wear. It was found that at least 30% reduction in ball consumption is possible by decreasing attrition grinding through the use of lifters in the mill. At the industrial level this would entail more lifters and/or higher lifters in the mill linings.

Historical methods of designing steel cord belt splices are compared with modern finite element modeling (FEM) methods. Dependence of the belt strength rating on the splice dynamic fatigue strengths is reviewed. A number of splice schematics are examined, using simple spring theory and FEM methods. Steel cord wire rope design is discussed. The importance of the insulation gum rubber properties and their splice dimensional factors and tolerances are analyzed. Splice fatigue lie analysis procedure is reviewed. This may be used to predict splice life or time of failure, depending on how the conveyor belt is operated.

INTRODUCTION The wet shotcreting system utilizing steelfiber microsilica shotcrete with remote controlled equipment (The Robocon System) was developed in Norway 7-8 years ago. Norway was the natural origin for this system due to several factors. Almost 30% of all underground hydro-power stations in the world are located here. These projects created a need for high productivity shotcreting rigs for the rock support work in the caverns and in the connecting tunnels. During the period of 1976-1980, more than 1000 miles of tunnels were completed in Norway. Secondly, the utilization of microsilica in concrete was also developed in Norway due to a concentration of the world's ferroalloy p ants there. Robocon has presently placed approximately 110,000 m (150,000 cu. yds.) of this superior shotcrete, and has consequently an extensive experience in the shotcreting method. During a relatively short period of time (1975-1980), Robocon had a change from hand-operated, dry-process shotcrete to remote-controlled, wet-process shotcreting, because of improved productivity, reduced rebound, safer and cleaner working conditions. The introduction of microsilica and water-reducing admixture made it possible to produce wet-process shotcrete of high strength.

Precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels have traditionally been designed with conventional steel bar reinforcement. In many cases, this has been satisfactory in service, but in others, major problems have occurred with the durability of the linings. Commonly this has resulted from corrosion of the reinforcement, mainly from chloridesin ground water, causing spalling of the concrete and leading to very expensive and disruptive repair programs. This paper discusses the relative merits of designing tunnel linings with steel fiber reinforcement to provide long-term durability, improved impact resistance and toughness for greater load capacity across joints, enhanced robustness during transportation and erection, plus improved fire resistance with the addition of polypropylene fibers. Guidance is also given in the selection of the correct fiber type, mix design and testing methods to establish the optimum dosage required and production techniques to ensure even distribution and compaction.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is developing new dewatering technology to permit the recycling of iron values contained in wet steel plant sludges. In laboratory tests, Q-BOP fume sludge was dewatered to 12% moisture by displacing water with acetone in a plate-and-frame pressure filter. Acetone is reclaimed through distillation at lower cost than conventional thermal drying of the sludge. The projected additional energy requirement for acetone treatment of the sludge, including acetone recovery, is $5 to $7 per dry ton.

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be effectively controlled by utilizing steel wire rope net systems, either as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting, permitting kinetic energy dissipation, yet providing high strength and consequently low maintenance. A review of the design considerations involved with these systems, as well as a review of several mine and non-mine installations is presented with the hope that the information may contribute to the safety against the dangers of rockfall and other mine hazards in active and abandoned mines.

The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. Steel-fiber-reinforced-shotcrete (SFRS) methods of testing and the wording of specifications vary from country to country. In the USA ASTM C1018 is widely used. The Canadians have taken a close look at C1018 and point out that exact determination of the first crack is very subjective, and they propose a method of design that eliminates this variable. The Europeans (EFNARC) have taken the principles of testing a step further than ASTM C1018, and have added a new step in measuring the effectiveness of SFRS. EFNARC uses an "energy absorption" of a plate loaded in its center, in addition to the principles of C1018. The principles of SFRS design are also used in Japan, Norway and elsewhere.

Various countries around the world have testing and manufacturing standards in place for steel cord belting. These standards are very comprehensive in what they allow the end user to specify, however, their practical significance in terms of belt life is more difficult to quantify. Such testing standards will be briefly reviewed in this paper in relation to the implication for end user expectancy. Since there is no US standard of manufacture, the end user is left with writing their own specifications. In addition, such standards do not address the effect on belt life of manufacturing faults, such as cord plane buckles, or lateral cord movement. Some new technology used to test steel cord belting will be described as an aid to both manufacturer and end user. The Kayford, Boone and Nicholas Division of Bethlehem Mines Corporation operates a modern coal preparation plant in Van, West Virginia. Since the start-up of the Van Plant in 1976 until the summer of 1980, the refuse handling system proved to be a costly maintenance problem and a material handling bottleneck. During the 1980 two-week miner's vacation the original system, which included two screw conveyors and a drag conveyor, was replaced by an installation utilizing two Flexowall steep angle belt conveyors. This paper describes the technical and economic analysis that led to the new installation and reviews its first year operating performance. The Van facility is a heavy media plant designed to handle 127 mm x 0 raw metallurgical quality coal from the Powellton seam at a maximum feed rate of 590 TPH (metric tons per hour). Depending on mining conditions, the clean coal recovery rate averages between 50 and 65%. The plant is set up with three types of cleaning circuits. Coarse material (127 mm x 12 mm) is cleaned in heavy media baths. Intermediate size material (12 mm x .5 mm) is cleaned in heavy media cyclones. Fine coal (.5 mm x 0) is cleaned in a hydrocyclone1 froth flotation circuit.

Canada produces close to 42 million tonnes of coal per annum of which some 38 million tonnes is produced by surface mining methods. The two Western Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia, produce 31 million tonnes of coal by surface mining. These two provinces provide the bulk of the metallurgical coal for export. The geological conditions in the Western provinces particularly in the mountain region are complex. The coals are friable and the seams are steeply inclined, sheared, intensely folded and faulted. There may be as many as 15 to 20 coal seams present with true thickness ranging from 2.5 m to over 8 m. This paper reviews the surface mining methods used to extract such seams. The difficulties associated with steep seam and multiple seam mining of friable coal resulting in lower coal recovery, high dilution and the problem of cleaning fine coal in the wash plant have been highlighted.
