This report covers operations at the Crystal-Victory and Minerva No. 1 mines in Hardin County, Ill., which are operated by the Minerva Oil Co., Fluorspar Division, with offices in Eldorado. It describes the exploration, development, and mining practices, giving costs of each. Transportation, equipment, power, labor, and other influencing factors also are discussed. The mining methods employed are those most applicable to the flat-bedded replacement deposits common to the Cave-in-Rock section of the Southern Illinois fluorspar district. The fluorspar beds occur from surface exposures to 1,000 feet deep. In this district churn drilling is the method practiced for exploring flat-bedded deposits from the surface. Aerial photography and geochemical methods for indicating mineralization have been helpful in planning a drilling program. A program usually includes enough drilling to obtain only sufficient data on the value of the ore body and its structure to justify initial development and purchase of the mineral rights under option.

The Bureau of Mines is testing super critical fluids as solvents to selectively extract valuable components from complex matrices. Materials recovered during supercritical fluid extraction are often highly purified. Using laboratory apparatus designed specifically for supercritical fluid research, Bureau re-searchers have measured the solubility of titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) in supercritical, liquid, and gaseous carbon dioxide (C02), CO2, a commonly used supercritical fluid, is inert, inexpensive, and nontoxic. Supercritical CO2 formed a single phase with TiCl4 at 45° C and 1,500 psig. When the solution was heated at constant pressure beyond 55° C, TiCl4 precipitated from the fluid. Results showed that TiCl4 solubility in supercritical CO2 is not controlled by the vapor pressure of the solute.

The logic leading to the development of the experiments in this paper already has been stated in Part I,3 but is briefly as follows: The results of the batch-grind experiments in which time of "grind" and fineness of finished product were the variables, strongly indicated (1) that batch grinding involving a single grind could not be operated under any condition to give maximum mill efficiency, (2) that the, sieve analysis of the feed charge in the mill materially affected the efficiency of the mill, and (3) that the percentage of finished product in the mill is a vital factor in ball-mill efficiency. A laboratory closed-circuit grind technic designed to simulate present closed-circuit grinding suggested itself, in which: a ball mill and a classifier constitute the grinding unit. The features of the closed-circuit grinding system are: (1) Short large diameter mills, (3) rapid flow of pulp through the mill, (3) continuous automatic removal of finished product from the system, and (4) high circulating loads. The high circulating load is a result if the short length of the Mill - that is, of the time the charge remains in the mill - and the small percentage of finished material produced during each circuit of the feed through the mill.

Air quantity-pressure and methane concentration surveys were conducted by the Bureau of Mines in accessible portions of an area being pillared in a Pittsburgh coalbed mine in West Virginia. These included two mined-out and three active butt headings and a bleeder system. The particular mine workings were started in virgin coal directly from a set of main headings; the main reason for the study was the difficulty usually encountered in adequately bleeding the gobs under such conditions. Although the two separate return airways in each active butt heading and the North and 1 Left bleeders contained acceptable methane concentrations (0.01 to 0.78 percent in the butts and 0.73 to 1.0 percent in the bleeders) with significant total methane removal (109 cfm in butts and 631 cfm in bleeders), there were relatively large areas in the gobs with possible minimal airflows. This condition appears to have developed from lack of systematic regulation of the airflow across the gobs and appears to indicate the existence of considerably more methane in the probably low flow areas in the gob.

"Research on the control of exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres is conducted in five areas; 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The distribution of research findings to the mining industry, to government agencies, and to scientists at other universities is accomplished in several ways.A data bank of respirable dust samples displaying a wide range of characteristics (low volatile, medium volatile, high volatile, silica fireclay, rockdust) has been established by the Center. This data bank is being utilized by Center researchers in a suite of medical, scientific, and engineering tests (FIGURE 26).The Center has honored requests for educational and informational materials from several sources, including MSHA and CANMET who received information on Center generated software and used the Center's expertise in developing a computer program for particle distribution model (DISFIT).The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust has organized two dust conferences on respirable dust, the Coal Mine Dust Conference, held at West VirginiaUniversity, Morgantown, West Virginia from October 8-10, 1984 and Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries: Health Effects, Characterization and Control, an international symposium on Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania from October 14-16. 1986. These conferences were co-sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Mine Safety and Health Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). On August 23-26, 1988, the VIIth International Pnuemoconioses Conference was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While not a sponsor of this conference, researchers in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust had significant participation with sixteen (16) papers presented (see Volume 8 of this series for abstracts and papers). These conferences provided a significant forum for the exchange of ideas on dust research and the interchange of research findings. The proceedings from these conferences are available from NTIS and ACGIH.In sum, significant benefits to mine worker health have resulted and should continue to result from the synergistic scientific, engineering, and medical research in respirable dust (FIGURE 27). As always, an important objective is the rapid dissemination of the results of this research to industry. Video tapes and the Bureau's Technology News series have been a very effective means of USBM technology transfer. Native asphalt was produced in 1977 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output declined 39% to 1,237,000 tons valued at $18,874,000. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsanite Co. in Uinta County. Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County. Utah. The asphalt was used for streets and roads, and for other purposes.

The record of safety in the use of permissible explosives in United States coal mines has been excellent, due in great measure to the persistence with which research has been carried on in the Bureau of Mines, to the development of permissible explosives, and to the cooperation of mine operators and workers in using permissibles in a recommended manner and in the effective though gradual replacement of black powder and other nonpermissibles. The demand for increased rate of coal production, changes in mining conditions and minim methods, and introduction of new mining machinery have resulted in modified or new blasting practices. To keep abreast of these developments the Bureau of Mines conducts investigations under actual mining conditions at the Experimental coal mine near Pittsburgh, Pa. Several years ago an extensive study was complete to determine conditions under which the allowable charge limit for permissible explosives per shot hole might be raised from 1.5 to 3 pounds without undue risk of gas or coal-dust ignitions. As a result of the study, this increase in the charge limit was authorized under certain specified conditions in 1948,5/ greatly facilitating production schedules.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, conducts research on methods to minimize the requirements for mineral raw materials through conservation, substitution, and increased minerals and metals recovery from primary and secondary domestic resources. To further this goal, prior Bureau research had devised a pyrometallurgical technique (RI 8211) to recover metallic iron and copper from molten copper smelting furnace slags by carbothermic reduction. As a continuation of this Bureau research on the carbon injection technique, reverberatory and electric furnace slags were treated in an 800-kva electric arc furnace by simultaneously top feeding the slag and injecting coke breeze into the bottom of the molten bath. Results of the tests show that 76 to 89 pct of the copper and up to 48 pct of the iron contained in the smelting furnace slag were recovered in a metallic phase, while 56 to 82 pct of the carbon injected into the sys-tem was utilized as the reductant. Laboratory evaluation has shown that the metal product, which contains 86.9 to 95.0 wt-pct iron and 1.3 to 4.1 wt-pct copper, will be a satisfactory medium for recovering copper by cementation. The expected energy consumption for the process is 110 kwhr per ton of molten slag treated and 520 kwhr per ton of solid material charged.

This paper, describing the various mining methods and practices at Britannia mines, Britannia Beach, British Columbia, is one of a series covering mining practices, methods, and costs in the mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Britannia property has been operated continuously for 30 years, and in that time many diverse methods have been used in exploiting the various types of orebodies worked. Under normal conditions mining methods include surface gloryholes, shrinkage stoping, shrinkage with powder drifts for primary breaking, horizontal cut-and-fill, horizontal and inclined square-setting, and timbered and open rills, the three latter systems being combined with close filling. The Britannia method of mining, a large-scale retreating shrinkage system usually combined with powder drifts for primary breaking, has been developed and applied here very successfully. Each block of ground as developed is studied as a separate problem, and the mining method, or combination of methods best adapted to the work in hand is applied thereto. Operating at, capacity, the series of mines produces 7,000 tons of ore per day.

"About two years ago the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, and the University of Idaho undertook an investigation of classification in its relation to table concentration of Idaho ores. The cooperation of the management of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. in placing at our disposal their West Mill and facilities as desired, offered an unusual opportunity for studying the field of hindered classification in its practical and economic relation to table concentration.It has been shorn theoretically, and demonstrated experimentally, that ore products are more easily and economically concentrated on tables if the natural feed, consisting of various minerals and of all sizes of particles of each mineral, be classified or grouped into a series of products in which the mineral particles of greatest density are small in diameter relative to the diameter of the mineral particles of lesser density. Products in which the maximum difference in diameter of light and heavy minerals occurs are to be obtained only by true hindered settling classification. To our knowledge there has never been a really good hindered settling classifier used in practice and the present tendency seems to be to by-pass any attempt at such classification.After a careful study of the nature of hindered classification and of the requirements for hindered settling in practice, a classifier has been developed that takes fullest practical advantage of the widely known, but generally only meagerly understood, condition of hindered settling so well analyzed a number of years ago by Dr. Richards.The present paper presents briefly some of the more important practical results accruing through the investigation."

This report summarizes 10 selected Bureau of Mines research contract reports produced from 1970 to 1980 which consist largely of geologic studies of coal mine roof support problems. Significant highlights from the contract final reports are discussed and presented in practical terms. The selected reports focus on the Appalachian and Illinois coal mining regions. In the Appalachian coal region, two geologic structures, roof rolls and slickensides, predominate over all structures as features that directly contribute to roof falls. Studies of these and other structures are reviewed, and improved methods of utilizing drill core and core logs to prepare hazard maps are presented. Among the reports described are several on the weakening effects of moisture on shale roof, as determined from both laboratory and underground measurements, and an assessment of air tempering as a humidity-control method. Also summarized are findings concerning the time lapse between roof exposure and permanent support installation as a factor in the effectiveness of roof bolting.

"The Bureau of Mines receives many inquiries concerning favorable areas in which to prospect for gold, procedure to be followed, equipment required, and allied subjects. This circular has been prepared for use in reply to these inquiries.Interest in gold mining and prospecting for gold remains steady. From time to time many people take to the field to search for new gold deposits. A large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the hope that it might assist these newcomers.A majority of the metal mines in the United States have been discovered by qualified prospectors who were searching for valuable minerals at the time. Chance, however, always has played a large part in finding mineral deposits. Some of the discoveries of the past were made by men on other errands, such as rounding up burros or hunting game. Accidental discoveries of ore bodies have been made in building roads and trails and in excavating for mine struc¬tures. Evidence of ore has been brought to the surface by burrowing animals and by ants; gold found in the craws of fowl has led to discoveries of deposits. Important discoveries have been made by men who had no knowledge of rocks or minerals; on the other hand, many ore bodies have been found by experienced prospectors, sometimes after hundreds of untrained men had already passed over the ground.The prospector who carries on his work diligently and intelligently is of course more likely to be rewarded for his efforts than the lazy or unintelligent worker; nevertheless, it is obvious that if valuable deposits are not present at the place being prospected none will be found. Conscientious and painstaking efforts to trace gold to its source usually disclose nothing more valuable than some narrow, unworkable seams; however, many deposits that were developed into profitable mines were found by this method of prospecting. Although some prospectors have made several lucky strikes, many others have spent their working lives searching for gold without finding anything worth while. Probably only one prospector out of several thousand ever finds anything worth developing. Moreover, only 1 out of every 300 or 400 properties developed becomes a profitable mine.Prospecting was begun in the Western States in the fifties as the miners looked for the source of gold found in placers. The search for gold has been continuous since that time; the number of prospectors in the field at any one time, however, has varied greatly. Except in some desert regions, practicallyall of the placer fields now being worked were discovered by old timers; more-over, most of the important gold districts were found by early prospectors. Important discoveries of lode mines, however, have been made from time to time. Most of the area in the mining regions of the West has been searched many times by prospectors, and nearly all of the easily found deposits have been located, but it is reasonable to expect that new gold mines will continue to be found. Most of the future discoveries undoubtedly will be of deposits that do not outcrop. Prospecting for such deposits requires considerable digging.Several important discoveries were made in 1934. One of these, the Rogers-Gentry gold mine at the edge of Antelope Valley in Los Angeles County, Calif., was found by an experienced prospector on an old patented homestead a number of miles from the nearest producing mine. The initial discovery at this mine was an iron-stained, decomposed, silicous limestone outcrop, with no vein structure evident at the surface, near a small, barren quartz outcrop and a water seep. Another discovery, the Silver Queen gold mine, in the same general region and near Mojave, Calif., was found by an experienced miner on an open fraction 400 by 1,400 feet in size between two old properties that were thought to have been worked out years ago. To more rapidly and economically prepare solutions for chemical analysis, of a wide range of ores, slags, minerals, and metals. Approach A Simple pressure-dissolution system was devised using an inexpensive, heavy wall plastic bottle containing a sample in an acid medium. Using the technique, a complex silicate sample can be dissolved in less than 1 hour. How It Works A weighed portion of a sample, ground to minus 100-mesh, is placed into a polycarbonate or polysulfone plastic bottle. A mixture of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid then is added. The bottle threads are wrapped with a layer of Teflon tape to prevent leakage, and the bottle cap is screwed on tightly. The sealed bottle is placed in a balling water bath. In the hot water, the plastic bottle acts as a pressure vessel to contain the pressure generated inside it. This technique should only be used by trained experienced people who are familiar with the hazards of hot acids under pressure. After being cooled in cold water, the resulting solution is brought to the final volume by adding 1.5 weight-percent boric acid solution to the bottle. The cap is replaced, and the bottle and solution is reheated. Precipitated fluorides, as well as any residue, are dissolved by the fluoride-boric acid reaction. The resulting clear solution then is suitable for spectro-photometric examination or other analysis.

This project involved modeling rock masses with varying Rock Mass Rating (RMR) values to determine the degree of instability that develops around an underground opening as a function of RMR. The modeling was performed using Itasca?s UDEC distinct element software, which allows explicit modeling of blocks of rock and how they interact with each other. The analyses included three different orientations of the joint sets, four different joint spacings and three different values of joint strength, which combine for a total of 36 different combinations of model parameters. Two different modes of behavior were observed: local failure of area immediately surrounding the roof and sides of the opening, and deep-seated failure extending a large distance beyond the opening. Quantification of the size of the unstable area that developed provides numerical validation of empirical guidelines used in design of ground support and instrumented monitoring systems.

Among the more recent developments for breaking coal in mines is the Airdox system, in which high-pressure compressed air is conducted to the points of application by means of heavy-duty steel and copper tubing. Stray electric currents can be detected on y of the compressed-air lines, and evidence of such currents is rev led, by arcs and sparks when contact is made between the tubing and mine track or other equipment forming a current path with the track. Explosive gas is liberated in many coal mines; therefore, from the standpoint of safety, it is desirable to eliminate all possible sources of gas ignition, including stray electric currents. The purpose of this report is to reveal the source, magnitude, and possible methods of controlling stray currents in compressed-air lines that are used in connection with Airdox systems. Stray electric currents have been studied in most coal-mining localities in the United. States where Airdox equipment is used. The information given in this report is based on the find of these studies.

The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot-deep vertical borehole¬. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmos¬phere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respec¬tively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the correspond¬ing values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.

Batches of red or brown iron ore concentrates, weighing 100 or 200 grams, were reduced with gaseous reductants in a laboratory-sized fluidized-bed reactor. Using a loss of weight technique, the rates of reduction were measured and the effects of temperature, gas consumption, and gas flow rates were determined. Below about 725° C the rate of reduction was controlled by the chemical reaction at the reduction interface having an activation energy of about 10 kcal/g mole. Above about 725° C the rate of reduction appeared to be controlled by the flow of the gaseous reductant and therefore to be directly proportional to the flow rate. Above 725° C, hydrogen reduced the iron ore much faster than carbon monoxide. In gas mixtures, carbon monoxide or nitrogen reduced the hydrogen partial pressure and lowered the reaction rate proportionally. When present in large concentrations, carbon monoxide had a serious inhibiting effect on the reduction rate, probably owing to carburization and sintering of the reduced iron.

The lack of technical information regarding the physical characteristics of kaolins and bauxitic kaolins, rejected during the mining of bauxite near Eufaula, Ala., has retarded their commercial utilization. This investigation was undertaken to determine their behavior when used in refractories. Ores were evaluated as refractory raw materials by compounding dry-press mixtures and specialties following procedures common to the industry. Products now on the market were used for comparison in laboratory evaluation.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration. Department of Labor, requires coal mine operators to measure compliance with federal re¬spirable dust exposure standards periodically using approved gravi¬metric samplers. However, the gravimetric approach, with its inher¬ent delays, cannot provide dust concentration data quickly enough to allow on-site correction of inadequate dust control strategies or re¬moval of personnel from harmful environments. Furthermore, alleged tampering with dust samples collected to determine compliance with standards prompted the Secretary of Labor to appoint a special Respirable Dust Task Group to study options to improve monitoring and control of respirable coal mine dust. The Mine Safety and Health Administration's Task Group recommended that the U.S. Bureau of Mines develop a fixed-site monitor that would provide continuous information to the mine worker and mine operator regarding dust levels and the status of compliance with the applicable respirable dust standard. In response to the Mine Safety and Health Administration's request, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating several sensor tech¬nologies for continuously monitoring respirable coal mine dust. One of these technologies is the Rupprecht and Patashnick Co. tapered element, oscillating microbalance. The bureau is in the process of investigating the suitability of using this sensor in the high humidity and vibration environment of underground coal mines. Laboratory tests have indicated that, with modification, the sensor can meet the humidity and vibration requirements for underground coal mine use. Currently, the bureau is developing

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the development of the world potash industry. The trends leading to the present market situation of oversupply arid low prices, which threaten; the domestic potash industry, are presented and analyzed. Because the major threat to the domestic industry comes from Canadian imports, the report focuses on the comparative economics of United States and Canadian production. The study resulted in these major conclusions: 1. Balance of world supply and demand is foreseeable in 1975, but it could be delayed by planned expansion. 2. Balance of U.S. supply and demand could occur as early as 1974-75 or as late as 1981. 3. Nearly all U. S. production capacity vis-a-vis Canadian competition is now uneconomic. Prices cover out-of -pocket costs for only 30 percent of U.S. production. 4. U.S. producers will be undersold by Canadians in 60 to 90 percent of the U.S. market. Canadians also will have the edge over United States and European producers in export markets. 5. U.S. firms have invested in 60 percent of the planned 1971 Canadian production, and they have large holdings in Saskatchewan. 6. The decline in the U.S. potash industry probably reduced personal income in Carlsbad, Eddy County, N. Mex, the chief potash-producing area in the United States, about $21.5 million between 1966 and 1969.
