"The paper presents the results of study of the sorption and flotation properties of the reagents of plant origin - tannin and natural extracts of the oak bark and stems of plants, with a view to their application as a low-cost environmentally friendly modifiers of iron sulfide flotation for the recovery of minerals containing precious metals. The technique of preparation of plant extracts with a fixed content of extractable tannins has been developed.The mechanism of flotation reaction of tannin extracts has been identified as based on their adsorption on the surface of pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite to form strong complexes with iron (III) at concentrations below micelle concentration. It has been found that adsorption of plant extracts occurs without displacement of primarily adsorbed xanthate, and preliminary adsorption of xanthate did not preclude fixation of tannin on the mineral surface.It has been shown that plant extracts having hydrophilizing properties at low concentrations could be applied as selective depressants for pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite in a weakly acidic, neutral or weakly alkaline medium. The use of plant modifiers could help to increase the quality of gold- and platinumcontaining concentrates and reduce the ecological impact on the environment."

"This paper presents an emerging High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology for ore pre-treatment. Unlike previous studies where HVP was utilized as a crusher to pulverize ore particles to micron size ranges for downstream processing, the researchers at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) use HVP to enhance ore processability. Application of relatively low levels of HVP energy to selectively break mineralized particles from barren rocks, followed by size-based screening separation enables the feed ore to be split into high grade and low grade products. During HVP treatment, cracks/micro-cracks are generated which results in pre-weakening of the treated ore particles, which ultimately results in energy savings in the downstream comminution processes. HVP treatment followed by conventional grinding also results in improved liberation of the valuable minerals in comparison to that achieved with traditional conventional comminution, subsequently improving downstream separation efficiencies. The three major improvements in ore processability through HVP pre-treatment have the potential to facilitate rejection of low grade ore prior to processing, increase production rates, reduce the energy required for comminution and improve flotation separation recoveries. This paper summarizes the major research outcomes of HVP pre-treatment demonstrated using ores from various mining operations conducted by the JKMRC. It also discusses the barriers that must be overcome before it can be adopted by industry with confidence in a continuous high tonnage rate application.INTRODUCTIONThe challenges of declining ore grades and increased plant throughput rates, resulting in higher energy consumption and operational costs, require the mining industry to adopt new technologies to make future ore treatment economically viable. Over the past 50 years, many researchers have engaged in investigating novel comminution techniques. Since Yutkin (1955) first demonstrated the potential to generate shock waves with pressures exceeding 103 MPa via electrical breakdown of water, several applications of electrohydraulic crushing by shock waves have been reported (Curley-Macauly, 1968). Interest in this technique was bolstered when Andres (1977) demonstrated that electrodynamic fragmentation results in superior liberation of mineral grains as compared with conventional grinding techniques. Despite mounting laboratory-scale evidence of the efficacy of electrodynamic fragmentation for mineral liberation, development of the technology for full-scale operation has stalled, primarily because the energy required to achieve desirable mineral liberation is approximately two to three times that of mechanical comminution, amounting to approximately 100 kWh/t for typical mineral ores (Andres et al., 2002)."

Copper recovery via Solvent Extraction (SX) process is a well-known technique, which is practiced commercially for approximately 40 years. The main advantages of the SX process are: an absence of using high temperatures (not more than 50oC), complete recycling of barren solutions, very high selectivity at removal and purification of metals, metal conversion to a form, suitable for easy subsequent recovery. Despite the wide acceptance of Solvent Extraction, it does have some shortcomings, namely SX employs large quantities of volatile organic substances. This leads to huge plant ?footprint? of SX circuits. The SX is very sensitive to low temperatures and quantity of total suspended solids in feed solutions and this causes bad phase disengagement times and therefore poor process performance. And most important ? low grade solutions (with copper concentrations below 1 gram per litre) are very unattractive for treatment via Solvent Extraction process, because capital costs for SX plants are not a direct function of copper tenor in the feed. The combined process with Ion Exchange (IX) and Solvent Extraction ? further called IX/SX by IONTECH Engineering was developed. This combination eliminates SX negative characteristics shown above. The key findings of the IX/SX process are; (1) recovery of copper from pregnant leach solutions with metal concentrations, varying on a broad range; (2) can be operate effectively with very low-graded copper pregnant leach solutions; (3) the construction of large ponds for pre-filtration of the pregnant leach solutions is not necessary; (4) working with turbid solutions and solutions containing large quantities of suspended solids; (5) winter operation without troubles; (6) strongly reduces organic losses; (7) technological approach lead to plant sizes reducing. This paper reviews the main stages of the combined IX/SX process, the applications for metal recovery and introduces projects where the process is applied. Key findings of the process are also presented. A comprehensive technical comparison between processes has been carried out. This paper also evaluates the advantages of using combined IX/SX technology as a purification and separation step in copper production process, with the aim of further increasing the overall copper recovery and to ensure that a suitable copper concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. The implementation of a Ion Exchange (IX) process in the classic Solvent Extraction-Electrowinning process(SX/EW) is found to be beneficial for processing of pregnant leach solutions both from spent and new copper heaps and dumps, acid mine drainage and other industrial streams without any preconditioning as well as in terms of achieving improved recoveries and copper cathode quality.

The importance of bio-products production is enhanced with the abundance and renewability of ligno- cellulosic biomass in comparison to the depleting fossil fuels especially in producing environment friendly energy. Lignin is obtained as a sludge residue from the pulp and paper industries as well as from the bio- ethanol /bio-gas production plants. Lignin is a renewable fuel with a high heating value equivalent to anthracite coal, low ash content and hydrophobic properties. The extracted lignin in paper and pulp mills is usually burnt at the mill directly to cover the energy production costs of the mill. The efficient utilization of lignin can reduce the percentage of lignin sludge used for energy production in comparison to the present situation. Presently the lignin is burnt /incinerated as sludge with minimum of 30 to 50 % moisture content. This high moisture content reduces the energy efficiency and simultaneously utilizes more amount of lignin sludge in producing the required energy. This paper explains a possibility of integrating sludge-pelleting techniques in paper and pulp mills. The integrated sludge-pelleting techniques would lead to an optimal utilization of lignin for energy and would simultaneously save the lignin resource for material utilization. The sludge pelleting process solves also the problem of handling, storage and explosion risks of lignin when compared to the present situation.

Graphite, a mineral form of pure carbon, is one of the most versatile minerals in industry, because of its varying physical properties and characteristics. The mineral occurs naturally in the form of tubular crystals or microcrystalline earthy lumps, or it is disseminated in rocks, which have undergone intense metamorphism. India has a large deposition of graphite minerals out of which about 43% are found in Arunachal Pradesh. However, compared to the rest of the country, the North-East Region and particularly Arunachal Pradesh has not attracted attention till date for detail investigation for characterization, beneficiation, prospecting and/or exploitation of the mineral resources including graphite. Bulk graphite sample were collected from upper Subanshiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Chemical analysis of the representative samples were carried out and found that 7.29%, 19.60% and 6.07% of fixed carbon (FC) is present in graphite sample collected from La-Lamdak, Bopi and Taliha, Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. Chemical analysis of the ash of the graphite sample shows presence of impurities such as silica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Ca, Mg etc in the graphite sample which are also supported by XRD and SEM-EDX investigation. The graphite samples of Arunachal Pradesh are low grade and do not fulfill the market requirement for the industrial applications. Therefore, low-grade graphite is subjected to beneficiation for the upgradation of the graphite for industrial applications. We have adopted the dispersion?cum-settling technique for the beneficiation of the graphite sample collected from Arunachal Pradesh. The FC of 40.21% with 41.17% raw graphite recovery which is equivalent to 71.02% carbon recovery have been obtained by gravity separation technique using only distilled water without any chemical reagent in case of graphite sample collected from Bopi, Arunachal Pradesh. The graphite sample is upgraded up to 47.75% FC with 41.91% raw graphite recovery, which is equivalent to 85.85% carbon recovery with the pH adjustment at 9 with NaOH. "Leaching behaviour of nickel – copper matte in a CuSO4–H2SO4 solution during the repulping stage of a matte pressure leaching process has been studied. The base metal recovery process investigated in this study consists of a matte repulping stage prior to a series of pressure leach stages. The repulping stage is essentially an atmospheric leach stage in which the Ni-Cu matte, containing small amounts of cobalt and iron, is leached in copper spent electrolyte from the tankhouse, resulting in dissolution of the nickel with simultaneous precipitation of almost all the copper.Effects of various process parameters on the kinetics and extent of the leaching reactions, as well as on the cementation of copper from the solution have been quantified. The parameters investigated were temperature, particle size, pulp density, stirring speed, residence time, initial copper concentration and initial acid concentration.Leaching characteristics of the preleached matte during the subsequent pressure leach operation has also been studied. The effects of variations in the conditions in the repulping stage on the kinetics and degree of base metal dissolution during the pressure leach stage have been investigated. Any transformations that occur in the mineral phases of the matte during the leaching process have been studied, and a leaching mechanism proposed."

"Steam Pressure Filtration (SPF) is a modified cake filtration process and is characterized by both washing and excellent de-watering of the filter cake. Compared to conventional gas differential pressure filtration, the filter cake is treated with saturated or superheated steam replacing pressurized air. Invented in the early last century, Steam Pressure Filtration has reached technical maturity in the 1990ies for inorganic particle systems, fine chemicals and coal. Especially the de-watering performance for fine particles systems below 50 µm make Steam Pressure Filtration an excellent option for the processing of fine tailings streams, to produce a stable material, which can be described by the methods of solids mechanics instead of paste rheology. The washing, which is due to the condensing steam, is able to reduce the ion load of the solid. This additional effect is able to generate a dry tailings material, which shows a reduced leaching potential of mobile ions, which originally derive from the process water. INTRODUCTION Steam Pressure Filtration is a process concept especially of hyperbaric filtration, which started its market entry in the 1990ies (Bott 1996, Bott 2002). Even though there have been many attempts to apply steam on filters before, the success story began with the combination of hyperbaric filtration and steam application and the technical solution to limit the steam treatment to a defined zone on the filter. This resulted from the scientific findings that steam mainly enhances the de-watering during the mechanical filtration (Gerl 1999). There are no or minor positive effects of steam application to a filtration process during cake filtration and after the steam breakthrough has occurred. Furthermore that time a sufficient control technology to regulate the steam consumption as well as suitable filter cloths became available. There is a growing need for de-watering technology in the mining industry, not only for the concentrate but also for the tailings streams. Several reasons argue against the established solution of damping the tails as suspension or paste into tailings ponds. There are ecological, political, societal and economic reasons, which question the tailings ponds more and more. Due to the increasing costs in the building and monitoring of tailings dams, which contain the tailing ponds, the concept of dry stocking using filtration technology comes into the game (Jansson 2016). Dry stocking converts the tailings stream form the suspension or paste state, into a material, which can be stockpiled. The latter typically is a moist flowable disperse particle system. The conversion involves a de-watering step, in which different types of filter equipment can be used, e.g. filter presses, membrane filter presses, automatic press filters or hyperbaric filters. For coarse products also vacuum filter can be applied. Due to its excellent de-watering performance and the easy scale-up properties Steam Pressure Filtration is further option for dry tailings stacking."

"We have developed a technology to improve the quality of low-grade concentrates containing minerals of tantalum, niobium and tin on the basis of given conception by the way of improving selectivity and using certain reagents composition. The basic collector presents a traditional or complex-forming collector used together with organic diphilic reagents – the secondary reagents regarding the basic flotation regiment, capable of forming associates with the main collector on the surface of the mineral, thus altering the interaction energy. In the given process the main collector is the fraction of hydroxamic acids C7-C9, the reagent of the secondary action – sulphosuccinamate, which added in moderate concentrations range provides for a synergistic effect.We have determined the parameters of the process stability and necessary modifying reagents for a selective recovery of tantalum, niobium and tin minerals from refractory products. Variants have been studied where the main collector and the secondary action reagent were substituted with some more efficient flotation reagents. A possibility of a more flexible reagent compounding for the process has been shown. The flotation process is highly stable regards the saline composition of the liquid phase in the pulp. It can operate under conditions of the complete water recycling with the total salt content up to 12 kg/m3, iron up to 1.2 kg/m3.The given results consider the efficiency testing of the suggested technology for the gravitation products, which were obtained from ores of various genesis and contain large quantity of the most refractory minerals, such as topaz (80%), gamet (55%), tourmaline (30%). High selectivity of the process has been registered with the metal recovery about 92-98%, which appears to be similar to hydrometallurgical operations under certain conditions."

Annually at least 5% percent of world power consumption is involved in the process of ore dressing while ore processing technology. Such rate of energy consumption demonstrates the importance of a given process study in the human life-sustaining activity. Examining of interparticle destruction being under external stress pressure in ore responses this problem solution at the greatest degree. The technology of destruction in the roll press is of great interest. The use of the given equipment allows to save a significant amount of energy by means of the built-in ore destruction mechanism. Examination of stress-strain fields which determine the level of interparticle destruction between the rolls in the ore layer enables to specify both level of ore destruction and power consumption. The mathematical computer modeling for the deformable environment use based on the finite-element method (FEM) allows to carry out the given research. We use FEM solution for elastic contact problem for the most complete study of power consumption employed in ore and interparticle destruction. This problem solution allows also to examine energy consumption expenses spent for ore crushing in the roll press. Also we have identified the mechanism of ore in a layer of the particles under pressure roller press. It is established that high level of performance and reduction of energy consumption in interparticle destruction of ore in the layer due to the appearance of the gradient of normal stresses in contact of particles of mineral raw materials. The algorithm has been developed determining crushing product particle size distribution of fractured particles in the layer, using the Bond’s theory of crushing. The use of our FEM model reduces the time of equipment selection for new plant and at the design stage to reduce the risks of errors in the choice of roller presses.

"The mineral surface characteristic is important for the flotation because it affects the flotation behavior of the mineral. Conventionally, in the flotation process for Cu sulphide ores, the degree of ore floatabilities varies depending on the mineral phase such as chalcopyrite, bornite, or chalcocite. Therefore, mineral surfaces are treated with activators and depressants to control the floatability of target minerals and obtain high recovery performance. There are lots of flotation reagents which have many effects on ores depending on ore characteristics and conditioning methods. For example, sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS) as activator is known to have the effect of resulfurizing and activating oxidized surface of chalcocite and bornite. On the other hand, NaHS is reported to depress chalcopyrite floatability. In this study, the evaluation of mineral surfaces was conducted to predict flotation behavior. Activation of Cu minerals (chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite) by NaHS was experimented. The three Cu minerals were treated in two steps. Firstly, they were oxidized in the drying oven. Secondly, they were treated with NaHS solution. After each treatment step, each mineral was measured by contact angle apparatus then analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of surface characteristics after oxidation and NaHS treatment were utilized to accomplish the study’s objective. INTRODUCTIONCopper sulfide minerals such as chalcocite (Cu2S), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) are well-known abundant copper-containing minerals. Generally, these minerals are recovered and concentrated via collector flotation. In flotation, the wettability of the mineral surface is an important factor in its recovery. When the surface is hydrophobic, the mineral has high floatability and when the surface is hydrophilic, it has low floatability. Usually, Cu sulfide minerals have high floatability. However when their surfaces are oxidized, their floatability becomes lower in flotation. In this case of surface oxidation occurrence, activators are added before flotation to modify the surface property of the Cu sulfide minerals so that they can be floated at a certain flotation condition. Sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS, is known as one of the activators. Zhao et al. (2018) reported that NaHS is often used as sulfurizer for oxidized sulfide minerals (Becker et al., 2014, Clark et al., 2000, Newell et al., 2006, 2007, Newell and Bradshaw, 2007). Although the floatability of Cu sulfide minerals was raised by adding NaHS generally, the results of this flotation study showed that the flotation behaviors of mixed chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite were different. Therefore, it was considered that NaHS works differently for each mineral."

Iron ore in Bellary-Hospet region is friable in nature and generates a significant amount of micro-fines (-150 µm) during mechanized mining, handling and processing. Present beneficiation practice generally employs spiral classification followed by hydrocycloning to remove slimes (-15 µm). The iron ore fines, beneficiated at JSW Steel Ltd., Karnataka generates tailing having 48-52% iron content in the form of slimes, which accounts for 50 to 55% by weight with respect to classifier overflow. The loss of iron as slime is considerably high. In this context, laboratory studies were carried out with different combination of beneficiation techniques with an objective to develop an efficient flow sheet to achieve better product grade and recovery from classifier overflow. The results revealed that de-sliming process by hydrocycloning in combination with either magnetic separation or froth flotation leads to increased iron loss in tailing. Based on investigation it is observed that forward flotation is beneficial over the reverse flotation. The experimental approach of forward flotation on classifier overflow followed by magnetic separation on flotation tailing resulted in overall product grade of 62.9% Fetotal and 70.3% yield. The tailing contains 34.6% iron, which accounts for 29.7% by weight with respect to classifier overflow.

"Nickel is an important metal with the total global consumption of about 2 million tons per year. It is sourced from both sulfide and laterite ore, but currently laterites are becoming more attractive for nickel production due to the depletion of high grade nickel sulfide ores. Laterites are generally processed by hydro or pyro-metallurgy and therefore, pre-concentration of nickel before such processes is very important. In this paper the effect different physical methods (including flotation) on the pre-concentration of nickel in laterite ores will be discussed. The ore used in this study was a laterite from South East Asia. Nickel was upgraded using different methods such as magnetic separation, flotation and sizing. The effect of ore mineralogy on choosing the best strategy to upgrade nickel will be discussed. The findings of this project will help to unlock a substantial volume of nickel with significant value from laterite ores.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an important metal with the total global consumption of about million tons per year which has grown rapidly during last decades (Mackey, 2011). Nickel is sourced from two different types of ores, sulfide and laterite. The majority (about 70%) of the world’s nickel resources occur as laterite ores which are often complex, and low grade, and therefore expensive to treat using conventional methods (Xu et al., 2013). Today, nickel laterites are more attractive for production of nickel as the amount of high grade nickel sulfide ores has diminished (Janwong, 2012). Therefore more economic processes to recover nickel from these resources should be developed.It should be noted that nickel laterite mineralogy is complex, and nickel often presents as ultrafine inclusions in a number of mineral phases. Because of the low nickel concentration and variable distribution in these phases, effective upgrading by physical separation processes would be challenging. Researchers have tried to improve nickel laterite flotation recovery by using a number of feed preparation techniques. A summary of the nickel grades obtained using flotation and magnetic separation as reported in the literature is presented in Table 1. It can be seen that only minor nickel upgrades have been reported. Quast et al. (2015) have concluded that the complex mineralogy of nickel laterite ores makes it difficult to achieve any significant nickel upgrading by physical techniques, including flotation. They achieved 40% increase in the nickel content (from 1.0% to 1.4%) at a nickel recovery of 43% (Quast et al., 2015). Various attempts in USA, New Caledonia, India and Australia, to upgrade nickel in laterite using magnetic separation have not been successful (Quast et al., 2015). A recent comprehensive review on topics influencing nickel laterite flotation has shown that further investigations in the flotation of laterite ores are undoubtedly warranted (Farrokhpay & Filippov, 2016)."

The superior characteristics of iron ore pellets compared with natural ore and sinter are well known. Due to the higher grade and bulk density they show improved transport and material handling properties. While charging blast furnaces with pellets an increased productivity is realized through pellet?s uniform structure and composition. The increased productivity is caused by a high permeable furnace burden with a decreased coke usage via fuel injection and oxygen enrichment. Therefore, a narrow pellet size distribution and a minimum content -6.3 mm are necessary (Meyer, 1980). The required pellet size distribution can be achieved on the one hand by screening the fired pellets after the induration furnace and recycle the undersized pellets. On the other hand it is possible to produce high quality iron ore pellets with a high degree of sphericity, the important narrow grain size distribution ranging between 9 to 16 mm with high green strength directly in the pelletizing device. To produce high quality green pellets, possibilities and knowledge about adjustments of the pelletizing device are necessary. The paper presents a classification of state of the art pelletizing systems in accordance with the advantages of the pelletizing disc and pelletizing drum in issues like adjustability, green pellet quality, the recycling rate and the space requirement. By a systematization of the influences on pelletizing the common reliance of objectives on influence like pelletizing moisture, disc inclination, rotational speed, mass flow and rim height are given. With the progressive depletion of known resources of good quality coal and minerals as well as the increasing demand of these minerals by different user industries, the emphasis has been shifted all over the world from selective mining to bulk mining followed by up- gradation to obtain the required quality of concentrate. The column flotation cell is one of the alternatives to reduce the gangue content of fines because of its inherent characteristics viz. easier to operate, low space required, no moving parts etc. A laboratory flotation column is used to conduct experiment. Present work has been undertaken to observe the effect of process variables (gas flow rate, feed/slurry flow rate, and frother concentration) on gas dispersion parameters (gas holdup, bubble surface area flux) in collection zone and to explore the effect of feed (slurry) inlet orientations and gas flow rate on column?s metallurgical performance. The effects of solid particle concentration, size and type (hydrophobic and hydrophilic) of solid on gas dispersion parameters have also been investigated. Test work has been performed in a continuously operating Perspex column (10 cm in diameter and 168 cm in height) using coal, sphalerite and dolomite as solid. Gas hold-up has been measured by phase separation method and mean bubble sizes are estimated from a drift flux analysis. The influence of operating parameters on bubble surface area flux has been discussed. It is observed that gas holdup in collection zone is affected by air as well as feed flow rates and also solid?s type. It is also found that addition of solid decreases the gas holdup and rate of decrease in gas holdup increases when solid concentration increases and particle size increases. Increase in gas flow rate increases recovery in collection zone due to increase in number of bubbles per unit volume of the column. From the experimental results it is evident that cross-current orientation of feed inlet shows slightly better metallurgical performance compared to other orientations. This paper describes the inseparable relation between product design, liberation, and metallurgical recovery in the optimisation of the recycling of passenger vehicles. This is illustrated by the use of an optimisation model that uses among others a material combination matrix based on metallurgical process data, which depicts the consequences of the quality of intermediate recycling products on the metallurgical material recovery and final alloy metal quality. Various simulations will illustrate the effect of changes in product design and hence liberation on the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Although this paper focuses on cars, the discussion is equally valid for any end-of-life product. Calibration of the model will be discussed with reference to experiments carried out in order to study the optimal recovery of aluminium applications used in passenger vehicles.

To comprehensively utilize the valuable resource in tailings, increase the economic benefit of mine, reduce the amount of tailings, prolong the service life of tailing dam, the comprehensive utilization of tailing resource is arousing the attention of more and more mines. Research of comprehensive recovery of feldspar and silica from Cu-Mo floatation tailings has been furthered. Technology of "De-sliming-Magnetic Separation-Reverse Flotation-Feldspar and Silica Separation" has been developed to utilize the resource. Slime is removed and reagents cost is reduced by de-sliming. The specific effective collector ZL is used in gangues reverse flotation, and GZ-818 is the collector in feldspar and silica separation. The grinding operation is vital to ensure the liberation degree of feldspar and to eliminate the reagents pollution on minerals surface. To a Cu-Mo flotation tailing assaying K2O 5.22%, Na2O 2.22%, Fe2O3 1.95%, Al2O3 12.05%, SiO270.66%, superfine K-feldspar and silica concentrates can be produced. The feldspar concentrate productivity is 29.67% assaying K2O 8.99%, Na2O 2.86%, Fe2O3 0.16%, Al2O3 16.99% and SiO2 68.92%. The silica concentrate productivity is 14.20% assaying 0.17% K2O, 0.04% Na2O, 0.01% Fe2O3, 0.55% Al2O3 and 98.17% SiO2. The technology provides technological reference model for the similar mines.

"Large volumes of mine tailings accumulated in surroundings of porphyry copper deposits represent a growing threat to environment. They contain significant concentrations of toxic metal and metalloids which can contaminate river runoff, ground waters or can be transported by wind. Both extreme pH of fluids in tailings impoundments and high surface areas of processed mineral grains provide their increased reactivity. As a result, during only a few decades, As, Cu, and Mo can be mobilized, redistributed through the tailing column and accumulated through post-deposition leaching, evaporation and contamination with natural fluids. Those processes are reflected in the forming of secondary minerals. Gypsum, Fe oxides/hydroxides, efflorescent salts and clay minerals are typical alteration products in tailings. Here we present the results of reactive transport simulations implemented on the base of PHREEQC and SUTRA codes. The one-dimension model emulates the mass balance between rainfall, evaporation and subsurface runoff, the kinetically- and thermodynamically-driven dissolution of tailing minerals, advective and diffusive transport of tailing fluids, and precipitation of secondary phases. A typical tailing column is composed of four unequal layers with predominance of (i) evaporation, (ii) secondary mineralization above, (iii) below water table, and (iv) near the bottom of dump. Those horizons are characterized by contrasting pH, chemical composition and bulk mineralization of pore fluids, distinct accessibility of atmospheric oxygen and, as a consequence, distinct intensity of sulfide oxidation. The modeling and its verification on Chilean tailings impoundments reveal the complexity and high rates of secondary mineralization. The accumulation of toxic alteration products is controlled by fluid transport through the tailing column induced by both rainfall/evaporation and exchange with subsurface runoff. The geochemical modeling is a powerful approach which allows comparing the processes in tailing deposits produced by distinct flotation regimes and providing the long-term predictions of their environmental impact as well as identifying sectors of tailings for possible re-processing."

"Adequate characterisation of clays is becoming increasingly important as operating mines move into areas of more complex ores. The processing therefore needs better mineralogical characterisation to identify problematic ores for better planning before issues arise. While a number of instrumental mineral characterisation methods are available, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is widely recognised as perhaps the best technique for the identification and quantification of minerals, particularly clays. When an appropriate sequential and systematic sample preparation and treatment protocol is employed with instrumental XRD analysis individual clays can be uniquely identified, and the proportions of interstratified clays can also be quantified. The effect of sample preparation on the XRD analysis and identification of clays was investigated in this study. The results showed that sample preparation protocol is indeed critical to accurately analysis and characterisation of clays. For example, both dry grinding and micronizing affected the degree of crystallinity of kaolinite leading to the formation of reactive surfaces or changes in the physicochemical behavior. It was also found that the apparent degree of preferred orientation in platy minerals correlates directly with the amount of force/pressure applied during the preparation of backfilled powder samples. This work showed that manual preparation can produce highly variable peak intensities especially with minerals that show any preferred orientation. Therefore, clays have been extensively investigated for many years. Adequate characterisation of clays is becoming increasingly important as the mineral processing industry faces more complex mineralogy with the need for better mineralogical characterisation to identify problematic ores and plan accordingly. In most studies, X-ray diffraction (XRD) method has shown the unique capability to characterise mineralogy, especially for the fine grained size materials. The XRD technique is particularly diagnostic for clays. It is known that under ideal conditions, the peak intensities of an XRD diffractogram are proportional to the concentrations of individual minerals present in the sample. Hence, the qualitative mineralogical data obtained from XRD can be quantified, using either the internal or external standard methods. However, it is also known that clays are particularly sensitive to the influences of sample preparation method due to their physical characteristics (e.g. fine grain size, morphology, relative physical softness, crystallinity, thermal sensitivity) that could be destroyed by inappropriate preparation prior to the analysis. Thermal and mechanical treatment and grinding of clays can change their crystalline structure, and consequently, their characterisation results by XRD analysis. The behaviour of clays in grinding has been widely studied, especially for kaolinite (Miller and Oulton, 1970, Milocevic et al., 1992, Tomasevic-Canovic et al., 1992). With prolonged grinding time, the crystallinity of the clays can decrease (Filipovic-Petrovic et al., 2002). It has been shown that grinding may gradually cause the loss of hydroxyl ions of kaolinite (Gonzalez Garcia et al., 1991)."

Sampling of municipal solid waste is known to be difficult to sample if it has to be representative. When dealing with municipal solid waste, the usual method is to study separately waste material below 40 mm and particles bigger than 40 mm. The material < 40 mm cannot be sorted manual and is termed the “fine fraction”. The particles > 40 mm can be separated manually and are usually sorted into pre-defined groups of materials. These groups can be defined depending on the demand of quality assurance. But standardisation of procedures is not far progressed, even for the widely practised sorting methods.

A review of the laboratory- and pilot plant-scale physical separation techniques for the beneficiation of nickel (Ni) laterites shows limited efficacy. To date, the only upgrade technique adopted commercially, prior to hydrometallurgical processing of Ni laterites, is the removal of a barren, coarse size fraction in the feed by classification. In the present work we investigated two low grade (~ 1%), goethite-rich Ni laterite ores’ upgrading by magnetic separation, attritioning/coarse, (lower Ni-grade) gangue rejection and flotation techniques. Low intensity (0.1T) dry magnetic separation at ambient temperature of raw samples and those pre-heated at temperatures up to 450 °C showed evidence of pay metal Co and Mn bearing asbolane and/or lithiophorite minerals pre-concentration in the magnetic fractions. Ni distribution, however, did not show any noticeable magnetic upgrade but followed the weight distribution. Other ore pre-treatment methods (e.g., desliming and sulphidisation) followed by froth flotation with anionic and cationic reagents also led to noticeable (~35%) Ni upgrade. This is due to the deportment of Ni across several gangue host mineral phases (i.e. Fe oxide/hydroxide and a range of silicate/aluminosilicate minerals). From chemical analysis, after disaggregation of ~ 1% Ni grade feed ore, coarse (-600 + 38 µm) and fine (-38 µm) fractions of ~0.6% and 1.3% Ni grades respectively, were also produced, suggesting that a significant upgrade in Ni content can be achieved by rejecting the + 38 µm fraction with the loss of <40% of the Ni. The ore mineralogy, particularly the complexity and high number of un-liberated Ni-bearing phases, greatly compromises physical separation methods for these ores, with the possible exception of screening after disaggregation of the fines inherent in the run of mine ores.
