"Construction for the restoration and expansion of 102-year-old Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois began at the conclusion of the 2014 baseball season. This six year project involves structural upgrades to the Stadium, improvements to the facade, infrastructure, restrooms, concourses, suites, press box, and bullpens, as well as the addition of restaurants, patio areas, batting tunnels, video boards, an adjacent Office-retail Tower and a new Hotel. The Bleachers were demolished and replaced, and a new underground Clubhouse was constructed for the Chicago Cubs beneath a new open-air Plaza. The 1060 Project is privately funded, projected at $750 million (US). The work will be completed in phases during consecutive off-seasons, each with a maximum 23-week duration extending through the Chicago winter. Ownership mandated that on-going construction cause no disruption to the Major League Baseball season, have no impact on hosting concerts and other special events, and it should not adversely affect seating capacity, or diminish the fan experience.The 1060 ProjectAfter purchasing the Chicago Cubs baseball team in 2009 from the Tribune Company, the Ricketts family began planning the renovation and improvement of Wrigley Field and its near neighborhood surroundings in Chicago, Illinois. What came to be known as the 1060 Project was officially announced at the annual Cubs Convention in 2013. Construction began on the $750M privately funded project in October 2014 at the conclusion of the Major League Baseball season. In their vision, the Ricketts committed the 1060 Project to three primary goals. First and foremost as a MLB franchise, the work should provide a meaningful contribution toward winning the World Series and ending the championship drought which stretched to the last win in 1908. Second, the project should be focused on preserving and improving Wrigley Field. Finally, the project should be committed to outcomes that enable the team to be a good neighbor and provide economic and social benefit to the local community.Constructed as Weeghman Park in 1914 for an estimated total cost of $250,000, the stadium provided seating for 18,000 fans and a home for the Chi-Feds and Whales of the National Federal League. The Chicago Cubs were enticed to move from the West Side Grounds in 1915. In the next 100 years, the Wrigley Field would be sliced apart and expanded, double its seating capacity with the addition of double deck grandstands, be enclosed by bleachers (and an ivy covered wall), and, in 1988, experience its first nighttime baseball game with the addition of lighting.The 1060 Project has a total budget of $750M, with an expected construction value of $350M. It is projected to add over 2,100 jobs to the economy and be completed before the 2020 baseball season. It is with considerable trepidation that I set out to defend "litigation" to Design Professionals (DPs), as a better method of resolving disputes than arbitration, in the light of my personal feeling that an increasing amount of America's productive process is being squandered in litigation. Newer methods of dispute resolution, particularly arbitration, are fashionable, and opponents of these schemes risk being viewed as cynical or self-serving. My quandary is heightened since for some smaller disputes, arbitration seems clearly the better choice. I must concede, for example, that when the cost of dispute resolution--i.e., the cost of the process (such as arbitrators fees, attorneys fees, etc.), plus the cost impact of the non-productivity of involved employees--approximates the amount of the dispute, controlling that cost may be as important as a correct resolution. This principle is particularly true for small disputes arising during the progress of a project; it is probably more cost-effective for all parties to resolve their disputes quickly than permitting the dispute to drag out.

How many times have you heard "You can't drive piles because of the vibration."? You hear these words come out of the mouths of owners, engineers, and contractors. When a piling contractor hears this, he can almost always do a psychological profile of the individual uttering these words of wisdom. If the owner makes the statement, we know the odds are about 95% that the owner owns the building next door or he wouldn't care what happens to it; or the guy next door has threatened to sue the owner if he even so much as walks across the site of the proposed new building. If the owner owns the building next door to the new construction you can also be just as certain the old structure has undergone settlement. If the statement comes from the mouth of the contractor, it is usually just a case of him being inexperienced.

Any type of deep excavation whether for Bored Piling, Diaphragm Walls or Contiguous Bored Piling Walls depends on forming a stable borehole with a defined cross-section to receive safely the permanent materials. In modern construction the excavation depth can reach well the range of 100 m and above. The diameters of the Piles reach often sizes of 2.5 m and bigger. Top casings in Bored Piles (Diaphragm Wall none) are rather short and stability below the casing, need to be secured by stabilization slurry. The boreholes need to be formed through a variety of different materials and stand open for an extended period. Without a safe stable borehole, it is impossible to produce quality products and work cost-efficient. The understanding and proper usage of a suitable slurry is a key element essential for the delivery of Foundation Elements with high quality and within a reasonable budget. The setting of mechanical and rheological parameters in specifications is necessary and helpful, but probably insufficient to embrace and control such a key element in the practical implementation of foundation construction. The proper selection, design, implementation and supervision of slurries on site requires both from Contractors and Engineers to understand how different slurries do function. Only with this knowledge the right decisions in slurry operations can be made. This talk is directed to give some help to both, Contractor’s and Engineer’s, in understanding how different type of slurries do work. (Which ones should be preferred in what kind of soils.) The better knowledge will help the Contractor to control cost and enhance production. The Engineer will be able to assist in arriving at the appropriate technical choices and include in the specifications.

More precisely, the advantages of BIM-based planning during work preparation and the automated and structured data management - both machine production data and the manually recorded quality-relevant reports - during execution phase are displayed. In this context, the benefit of the digital twin to optimize processes, to reduce defect costs, for a more effective reporting sys-tem, and the further usage of as-built information in the BIM or GIS process is described.

Pavai-and TeampT JV started working on the project T49A, Sumbar J & K State as part of slope and earth stabilization for ongoing Banihal - Katra Railway Connection Project. This project has several tunnels and bridges with slopes that are protected with various types of protection system such rock bolting, rock anchors, and micro piles. For the main two bridges Bring number 2 and 3 at T49 A location Pavai - TeampT JV has to design and execute the circular group of micro piles (Fig.1) for deep excavation of earth for the purpose of construction of well foundations (CAISSON FOUNDATIONS) for both bridge 2 and 3 piers. In this paper we discuss about the purpose, basic design, detailed design approaches and actual work implementation of micro pile with composite rock bolt applications and permanent rock anchors for slope stabilization works in this project.

"The installation of foundation elements (large-diameter Bored Piles or Diaphragm Walls) for the execution of underground works to be performed through the ""Top Down"" Technique (Stations, Car Parks, Subways, Artificial Tunnels) often requires the insertion, with pinpoint accuracy, of steel or prefabricated elements within the foundation system, to provide temporary and/or permanent support to the whole structure.The future high-speed railway station of Florence Belfiore (Italy) is a perfect example; the new station will be built in the Northwest area of Florence, about two kilometers far from the existing station of Santa Maria Novella. The project envisages installation of about 500 bored piles (1200-1500-2100 mm diameter), with lengths ranging between 50 and 70 m. In the upper inner part of 250 piles, a steel pipe (weight: 15-20 tons, length: 22-25 mt.) has to be inserted with pinpoint accuracy.The “TREVI-CALATORE” system allows to install the plunge columns and adjust their position and verticality.INTRODUCTIONThe execution of underground works via the ""Top Down"" technique, train or tube underground stations, parking shafts, tunnels, often implies the need to carefully insert steel or prefabricated structures, serving as provisional/definitive pillars, into the foundation elements.The future high-speed railway station of Florence Belfiore is a perfect example; the new station will be built in the Northwest area of Florence, located about two kilometers far from the existing station of Santa Maria Novella.The new Belfiore Station is part of the new European high-speed railway network. The works related to Florence urban penetration include (figure 1):•,a 6.5 km. twin tunnel excavated via TBM/EPB, that will run beneath Florence in a north-east direction,•,passing under more than 150 buildings, many of which can be considered historic buildings, with a soil•,coverage ranging from 6 m to 20 m;•,a North portal in Rifredi area, Firenze Castello Station;•,a South portal near Campo di Marte Station (which is also the launch shaft of the TBM)•,the new Underground Station in Belfiore area."

"Case 2. 100th Street Bus Depot: Elimination of Deep Caissons in Favor of Spread FootingsThe PROJECTThe 100th Street Bus Depot is a new five-story bus terminal for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority occupying one city block in Manhattan between 99th and 100th Streets, and between Lexington and Park Avenues. It replaces a former two-story garage, built in the 1890’s and initially used as a trolley-car barn. The new structure is a steelframed building with concrete floors and includes a partial basement near its middle. The easternmost column line with design loads of 10 MN (1,125 tons) is within 1.5 m of the underlying multi-tube Lexington Avenue subway system. To support the new columns along the subway line, the project bid plans had called for 1 m diameter and 17 m deep drilled shafts. The upper 14 m of each unit would have required 50 mm separation from the surrounding rock to prevent stress from being imposed on the roof and walls of the adjacent tunnel. The column loads were thus transferred to below the base of the tunnel and supported by 3 m long sockets in bedrock. The bid documents contained extensive test boring information, which revealed that the project site was underlain by massive Manhattan Mica Schist bedrock within just 3 m below street level. In fact, the Lexington Avenue two-level and multi-tube subway had been tunneled through this rock circa 1910, leaving an about 6 m thick solid roof over the upper-level subway. The NX rock core recovery values were near 100 %, with average RQD of 75 %.The CHANGEThe Bus Depot project was let as a design/build contract with a very aggressive fast-track schedule. Both the pre-bid preliminary design and the subsequent final design by the Contractor’s own hired design engineers relied heavily on very restrictive codes, including unnecessarily conservative approaches to seismic design. Any suggestion for value engineering change was undesirable and was strongly resisted. Yet, objecting against the blind reliance on codes in foundation design, the author questioned the real need for the deep drilled shafts to support the columns along the subway. The unsupported statement that no stresses from the new structure can be imposed on the roof and walls of the adjacent tunnel was not sufficient reason for the drilled-shaft design. Unconvinced that deep shafts were necessary, the author rushed to MTA’s warehouse where many rows of rock core boxes were neatly stacked. Careful inspection and some simple testing of the rock cores with the blows of a geologic hammer gave support to the reservations about the design. Later, as expected, the schist bedrock at this site was found to be hard to very hard with unconfined compressive strength values estimated to range from at least 70 MPa to over 100 MPa (10,000 psi to 15,000 psi). The tensile strength of the rock was assessed to be minimum 5 MPa (750 psi)."

Air rights projects are inherently challenging as they involve building in the "air space" above an existing structure. From a foundation engineering and installation standpoint there are numerous constraints and additional complexities to consider. This article describes how these issues were overcome for deep foundation design and construction at Lyrik Back Bay - Air Rights Parcel 12, the first successful air rights project over the Massachusetts Turnpike/Interstate I- 90 through this neighborhood in downtown Boston in 40 years. The project is unique in that it is both an infrastructure and commercial development project undertaken as a collaboration between a private development team S&A P-12 Property led by Samuels & Associates, and the state transportation agency, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT), owner of the land and transportation infrastructure.

The Potrero Power Station makes up approximately 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of shoreline on the east side of the San Francisco Peninsula between Pier 70 to the north and 23rd Street to the south. Beginning as early as the 1870s, the site has been home to numerous industrial activities and has not been open to the public in many years. The industrial activities ranged from sugar refining to power generation and gas manufacturing. The Potrero Power Station Project is rehabilitating the waterfront and pro- viding a mixed-use development and public waterfront to reopen the area to the public while also providing robust protection against sea level rise and seismic-induced instability. When transforming such a sizeable post- industrial area, creative design solutions were tailored to each location to increase the grade and stabilize the slope. The solutions implemented ranged from ground improvements to retaining walls.
