When it comes to structuring major mining contracts, the two most widely adopted formats are æmeasure and valueÆ and æcost-plusÆ. A problem with both of these formats is the difficultly of aligning the objectives of the mining company with those of the contractor to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. An alternative contractual arrangement is for the mining company to enter into an Alliance arrangement with the contractor, linking remuneration to mine performance across a range of targets. These targets can change over time as operational requirements change.   The aims of this paper are to: +        outline alternative types of mining contracts, as well as their strengths and pitfalls; +        describe the philosophy behind the Alliance contract at Newmont Waihi GoldÆs Favona underground mine; and +        identify some of the keys to success and pitfalls to avoid when implementing an Alliance.

The developments in hydrocyclone classification in the milling circuit at Bougainville Copper Limited are discussed. A major change in cyclone size and improve- ments in operating conditions have been made. Test work has been carried out to assess the classification performance of a modified Linatex cyclone, Wemco cyclones and a two stage cycloning circuit. The use of a scalping cyclone, to remove coarse material from the present overflow product for regrind, has also been investigated.

Alluvial gold mining in New Zealand and in particular on the West Coast underwent a renaissance during the early 1980's. This was based on two main factors: a) the sharp rise in the gold price b) the advent of the hydraulic excavator with which to mine the auriferous gravels. The scale of operations varies considerably. A small operation typically consisting of one or two people using an excavator to feed either a land based or pontoon mounted (floating) gold recovery unit, which will typically feature a rotary screen with or without a tailings stacker with the screened fines < 10 - 15 mm) fed over riflle tables. The largest screening plants of this type are operated by DML Resources in their Arahura and Mikonui mining operations where the plants have the capacity to screen up to 250 m3 of gravel per hour. These plants usually employ jigs and centrifugal concentrators for gold recovery. Unique amongst current operations is the Grey River Dredge, a bucket ladder dredge capable of processing 700 m3 per hour similar to those that operated earlier this century. Gold concentration is by a series of jigs. The number of plants operating in recent times peaked at around 130 in 1987 (coinciding with a nominal average gold price of $751) and since that time has steadily declined to 80 units in 1993 and about 45 - 50 units today. This cycle of rapid expansion and then steady decline has been repeated on the West Coast since the original gold discoveries in the mid nineteenth century.

The Mount Morgan minesite, located approximately 40 km SW of Rockhampton in Central Queensland, comprises 270 ha of unrehabilitated land which is the currently the major source of acid mine drainage run-off and seepage to the adjacent Dee River. Additionally, the minesite hosts an Open Cut Pit which contains 9000 ML of acidic and metal-rich water. In the absence of active management of water in the pit, there is a 50 per cent probability of an uncontrolled spill occurring in future years. The development of a contingency plan for management of overflow from the pit in the short term, has incorporated findings from numerous studies relevant to the Open Cut Pit including, but not limited to, water balance, contaminant source identification, toxicity testing, water quality profiling and limnological modelling, and estimates of probability of overflow. Extensive stakeholder consultation and peer review were also undertaken during the formulation of the contingency plan. The medium-term goal of lowering the water level in the pit to reduce the current high probability (50 per cent) of uncontrolled overflow to acceptable levels of risk is proposed to be achieved by a campaign of chemical water treatment. The treated water will be discharged to the Dee River, and sludge returned to the pit. The methodologies used for the selection and development of the water treatment process, that is proposed to involve treatment with lime, are described. Water treatment is the short- to medium-term component of a long range rehabilitation plan for achieving a negative pit water balance, and sustainable management of acidic water across the whole site. Achieving this ultimate goal will involve: reducing the inputs of water to the Open Cut Pit such that the annual water balance is zero or net negative, thus removing the need for water treatment in perpetuity; maximising, by surface rehabilitation works, the quality of run-off reporting to the Dee River; and minimising the volume of acidic seepage reporting to the seepage interception system. Possible strategies for achieving this long range goal consistent with overall site rehabilitation objectives are currently being developed and costed.

Discounted cash flow (DCF) methods are well suited and recommended as a primary valuation method for mineral assets for which there are at least indicated resources and some form of feasibility study containing engineering, production and capital and operating cost data. DCF methods are also applicable as a secondary or check valuation method for exploration properties for which no technical study has been prepared. For projects where little or no engineering, production and/or cost data is available, the process of formulating a project concept by specialists who do not possess experience and expertise in the relevant technical faculties is totally rejected as a basis for applying DCF techniques as a primary valuation method. Such an approach runs counter to The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) requirement to apply relevant expertise to specific aspects of mineral valuation. Technical and commercial inputs to mineral valuation should be reviewed by specialists who have specific expertise in the relevant disciplines, and should be tempered by the quantity and quality of technical evaluation which has been undertaken and the development status of the asset.

Shortly after Denny, Robson, and Irwin published their first paper in 1937, on the prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium, experiments were begun on the practical application of the discovery.It was thought at that time that aluminium powder, to be effective in aluminium therapy, would have to be intimately admixed with siliceous dust at the latter's source. There followed several years of experimental work underground, during which the application of aluminium powder was tested in:(1) Speakers on machine columns, vibrated by drills.(2) Vials placed in drill holes to be blasted.(3) Both homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture with explosives.(4) Packages with tamping.(5) Compressed-air lines.(6) Special compressed-air ejectors for use while drilling and after blasting.(7) The discharge of ventilation fans.(8) The filters of respirators.It was concluded from this research that any adequate method of introducing aluminium powder into a mine atmosphere would require too much extra gear, supervision, and aluminium p;wder, and would interfere unduly with underground routine.Later, animal experiments by Denny, Robson, and Irwin2 showed that aluminium powder provided effective therapy when inhaled independent of silica dust. Therefore, some means of surface treatment was deemed more practical.APPARATUS USED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALUMINIUM PROPHYLAXIS SAMPLINGA basic requirement was a method of sampling to assess accurately the particle-size concentrations of dispersed aluminium powder. The mineralogy and textures of a portion oC ore from the 25 level northern orebody, North mine, Broken Hill are described. This ore, in places, contains up to 70 per cent cubanite (CuFe2S3 ) which has crystallized directly with other sulphides and associated gangue minerals.Several breakdown reactions involving the cubanite are also considered.

Traditional quality control procedures for aggregates production within the quarry industry rely on off-line laboratory analysis, resulting in poor performance and inconsistent product quality. A high speed on-line aggregate classification system is described here. A product sampling system directs aggregate through an inspection chamber where a novel imaging system digitises the particle geometry. Data processing algorithms extract dimensional data and image features, while a neural network classifier assigns a qualitative shape descriptor to each rock particle. This system provides each sampled batch with a complete analysis of size and shape distributions, complementing a new generation of cone crusher technology to maximise product quality and plant efficiency.

Friction rock stabilisers (FRS) are steel-based, thin-walled tubular ground reinforcement widely used in underground mines in Western Australia. Following installation these stabilisers are subject to corrosion which may reduce the load carrying capacity and lead to unexpected ground falls. Although corrosion has been recognised as a common occurrence, particularly under aggressive mine water and mineral conditions present in underground mines, the knowledge of the effects of corrosion on the mechanical behaviour of FRS is limited. The Department of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia has conducted a laboratory based program of studies to investigate the effect of corrosion on the mechanical properties of FRS. The studies have focused on the effect of corrosion on tensile strength of FRS and frictional resistance along the interface between FRS and the drillhole wall. The results indicate that under certain conditions corrosion damage can significantly reduce the effectiveness of FRS.

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. In a companion paper on current hedging practices in the mining industry (Armstrong et al, 2009) we showed that contrary to popular belief, mining groups are still using financial derivatives to hedge against foreign exchange risk and interest rate risk, and more recently against adverse changes in energy prices, notably the oil price. This paper presents a case study on a hypothetical gold mine to illustrate the impact that hedging policies could have on its profitability by reducing the downside risk due to adverse changes in the exchange rate and increases in fuel prices. The characteristics of the hypothetical mine have been set to reproduce those of a real gold deposit, the Kisladag mine that is currently being exploited by open pit methods in Turkey. This mine was selected because its feasibility study was available to the public. Geostatistical simulations are used to reproduce the inherent uncertainty on the recoverable reserves û stochastic simulations are used to generate the variability of the other three key sources of uncertainty: the gold price, the cost of energy and the exchange rate. A simple strategy based on straightforward vanilla options (puts and calls) was developed for hedging the last two risks, on the assumption that the company sells its production at the prevailing spot price.

The headwaters of Skippers Creek and the Shotover River are reputed to be among the richest alluvial gold catchments in the world. This alluvial gold has no doubt been derived from reef systems similar to, and associated with, the Bullendale lodes. Physiographically the prospect covers steep ridges and deeply incised gullies between the Richardson Mountains in the west and the Harris Mountains in the east. Vegetation is mainly tussock with bush either side of Murdochs Creek. Access to the area is by metalled road to Skippers and then by 4WD track to Bullendale. Alternatively the prospect area can be reached by helicopter from Queenstown in around ten minutes.

Copper, zinc, lead, and silver in the discordant magmatic-hydrothermal orebody of the Conrad Mine, N.S.W., all have a relatively high mean abundance. Any single concordant sulphide orebody containing the same metals has a similar order of mean abundance of only one or two of these, particularly copper, copper and zinc, or zinc and lead.The relative abundances of the metals in the Conrad orebody vary more widely than in concordant orebodies, and the lead-zinc-silver and copper-zinc-lead relationships are significantly different.INTRODUCTIONIn previous investigations of metal abundances in sulphide ores, the basis of selection of the orebodies was their form, and to some extent their geological setting, rather than hypotheses concerning their origin. In all cases they were generally concordant with the bedding of the sedimentary or meta-sedimentary rocks enclosing them, and most occurred in volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Their mineralogies were simple, and they were copper, copper-zinc, zinc or lead-zinc rich in composition. Most were of the type ascribed by several authors to exhalative-sedimentary processes.In one of these investigations (Stanton, 1958), it was pointed out that since the metals in ores of this type showed similar abundance patterns and behaviour, it would clearly be of interest to examine, and to compare with them, orthomagmatic and vein types, unquestionably derived from their igneous rock associates.The present investigation is concerned with a single orebody, of clearly discordant type, and of indisputable hydrothermal origin. The abundance and behaviour of copper, zinc, lead, and silver have been determined and compared to similar data fOl!' the concordant type. Such a comparison tests the possibility that metal abundance patterns of base metal ores may be indicative of the mode of ore deposition.

Site-based case studies (including data collected from industrial surveys) and their application in evaluating circuit performance, have a significant role in developing reliable process models. Such models are useful to both plant metallurgists and researchers. Appropriate process models enable the plant metallurgist to assess the impact of different operational parameters on the overall circuit performance. They also provide the researcher with a detailed understanding of process behaviour in response to changes in ore characteristics and process conditions (ie plant throughput, ore competence, ore type). Thus enabling the identification of effective operating factors, and allowing them to be ranked in order of their influence on the process response, which eventually develops into a process control tool in the hands of plant operators.The above approach has been developed and applied at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) separately for both comminution and flotation processes. In recent years, the JKMRC has attempted an integrated approach by developing process models that incorporate the impact of upstream processes on downstream processes. This is not possible using the traditional approach of separate comminution and flotation surveys, so conducting integrated plant surveys is crucial for success in developing integrated process models. This paper summarises industrial experience gained while conducting such an integrated plant survey at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining operation near Cloncurry in north Queensland. An appropriate approach should be taken to enable the alignment of different requirements from different processes during the plant survey. The 1999 edition of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the æJORC CodeÆ) became effective in September 1999 and is the latest revision of a Code which was originally issued in 1989, but which has an ancestry dating back to the first JORC report released in 1972. The modifications introduced in 1999, which are briefly discussed in this paper, substantially improved the document, but did not materially alter the fundamentals of the Code, these being the Mineral Resource/Ore Reserve classification framework and terminology, and the requirements and guidelines for public reporting of Resources and Reserves. Codes or guides similar to the JORC Code exist or are under development in other countries, including the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa. It is pleasing to note that the 1999 JORC Code has been used as a model by these countries in developing their latest standards, and has been a major influence in the formulating of international reporting standards. The JORC Code is primarily a document covering the reporting of the results of mining companiesÆ activities to the public. However, mining geologists are interested in practical assistance and guidance in carrying out their duties. The JORC Code provides this in four ways. It establishes a framework within which those preparing and publicly reporting Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates must operate, by setting standards for the classification and reporting of Resources and Reserves and for qualifications of Competent Persons. It establishes the division of responsibility between the companyÆs Board of Directors and Competent Persons with respect to the preparation and reporting of Resources and Reserves, and empowers Competent Persons to materially influence how their Resource/Reserve estimates are reported to the public. It provides an extensive, detailed and practical check list of criteria to be taken into account in the preparation of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates. Finally, it provides a strong measure of due diligence protection in the event of litigation if it is followed with diligence and honesty.

Variety among deserts is nearly as great as among other climatic environments. Common to most deserts, and to areas downwind from them, is the dominance of aeolian transport of surface material, at least during some seasons of the year. The result is dilution of local surface materials with varying proportions of chemically uniform fine sand and silt, often imported by the wind from remote areas. Fortunately, desert pavement,.even though separated from bedrock by a meter or more of nearly pure loess, is simply a diluted reflection of nearby bedrock. Infiltration of loess through the surface debris and the rudimentary soil-forming processes in the desert usually preserve the integrity of the pavement. This pavement, or its "downstream" derivatives, provides a suitable sample for exploration geochemistry if proper care is taken to circumvent the aeolian dilution. The simplest and most commonly used method of circumventing the dilution is to use a coarse fraction of soils or stream sediments, discarding or retaining the finer fraction depending upon the magnitude of the dilution. Where the coarse surface debris is composed of rock chips representative of the bedrock sources, the method is successful. Under most circumstances the coarse fraction of the surface material will give a fair representation of gross lithology and will occasionally give an indication of mineral- ization. The major drawback to this approach is that selective weathering and erosion in the vicinity of mineral deposits often lead to the loss of ore minerals into the finer fraction, leaving a coarse residue enriched in feldspar and particularly in quartz; thus, the geochemical signature from a mineral deposit is effectively reduced or completely masked. The second most commonly used method to overcome aeolian dilution, and probably the most effective at present, is to use a heavy- mineral concentrate. Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, aO2-, and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of aO2-, which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions.

A summary of the more important work by previous workers is followed by brief descriptions of the rock formations and regional structure. Type examples of the various forms of mineralization are described and the conclusion is drawn that there has been one main period of ore formation, namely, during the "Viti Revolution" in the mid or late Miocene.INTRODUCTIONThe Crown Colony of Fiji is comprised of a group of some 250 islands situated between latitude 160 sand 21 0 S and longitudes 1770 E and 1780 w: By far the greater, part of the total area, 7,083 sq. miles, is contained within the two main islands, Viti Levu 4,053 sq. miles, and Vanua Levu 2,128 sq. miles, and it is to these that most geologists have directed their studies. The most detailed work has been in the Tavua Basin, north coast of Viti Levu, centering about the mining town of Vatukoula and the geology of this area forms the subject of a separate paper by Blatchford (this volume p. 13).The present contribution summarizes geological knowledge of Fiji, at the time of writing (Feb. 1952), with particular reference to the known mineralIzation, but excluding the Tavua Basin. The excavatability of the rock mass in a proposed open pit mine at Globe-Progress has been assessed. The rock mass was initially evaluated by determining variations in seismic velocity and by using the Revised Size-Strength Chart. These two assessments should be performed during the feasibility or early investigation stages of a project. A complete rock mass excavatability assessment using a suite of geological and geotechnical properties was then performed using three methods: RMR System; Modified Rippability Rating; and a productivity estimation method. These three methods should be applied during the investigation and design stages of a project. The preliminary assessments show that most of the open pit rock mass is expected to be rippable. The complete assessment differentiates weak, fair and good rock masses within the open pit. Weak rock mass exists along the Globe-Progress Shear zone, located along the northern and eastern pit walls and also in the western pit wall where the Chemist Shop Fault is located are both regions are expected to be diggable. Relatively weak rock mass also exists along the Globe-Progress Shear axial hinge. The Globe-Progress Shear limbs are generally fair to good rock where moderate to hard ripping should be expected.
