This Is not a highly technical paper, but rather an attempt to give a general outline of coal mining for the benefit of those present who may have little or no experience in the industry, and is intended to give some general knowledge which may help to a better understanding of the problems of the industry. A knowledge of the disposition of workable material is necessary to give a comparison with other mining practices. Coal Is usually found in comparatively fiat seams of varying thickness, whereas other minerals are generally found in highly inclined lodes of variable width. However, even in comparatively flat seams unaffected by faulting, grades can, and do, vary greatly over short distances.This variation causes many local problems in working the small area affected. Even very steep seams, and some are much steeper than 1 in 1, vary considerably not only in grade, but also in direction of grade and level course. This is probably caused by folding during alteration of the shape and form of the basins after deposition.These swellies are common to most coal seams and vary only in extent. This type of variation in grade and direction of grade, while common to most ore bodies, is a matter of great importance in coal mining when it is considered that roadways are driven in the seam itself and have to be graded and made suitable for haulage purposes.The area of ground involved in an individual coal mining operation is often very large; many times larger than most metal mining propositions, and often comprises many thousands of acres.When it is considered that the specific gravity of coal may be only one-fifth of that of some ores mined, and the coal seam may be five or six feet in thickness, the vastness of the area necessary for continuous mining operations over many years will be realised.To achieve comparable outputs, with about five times the bulk of material to handle, much more ground and working places must...

Many mining operations are uncertain of what costs they should be achieving. The majority of cost estimates are based on historical costs that have added contingency factors. Historical costs are a valuable source of information but a more precise costing method is necessary. There are several alternative methods for predicting costs. A methodology which provides the best indication of the achievable costs is one using a standard inventory list and a bill of quantities. The model is termed a Basic Principles model and addresses basic design principles and engineering constraints.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. Grade uncertainty can have a number of important implications for a mining operation. One of the most significant risks in not considering grade uncertainty in planning is the over or under allocation of processing or mining capacity when compared to realised grades. This could lead to wasted capital expenditure or missed opportunities to add value. This paper demonstrates a method that optimises production capacity and mining schedules in the presence of grade uncertainty. Applying this method to the case study of a nickel deposit recommended a reduction in processing capacity, an increase in mining capacity and more extensive utilisation of stockpiles than optimisations completed with traditional methods. As a result, average NPV improvements of between seven per cent and 27 per cent were gained.

Dartbrook (Hunter Valley and South Bulli (Southern Coalfield) Collieries provide contrasting settings for gas sorption studies. Gas compositions at Dartbrook are dominated by carbon dioxide, with minor methane, while those at South Bulli are dominated by methane with minor carbon dioxide. Total gas contents at Dartbrook are also significantly greater than those at South Bulli. The two collieries are also contrasted in terms of coal composition and mining environment. Dartbrook Colliery mines a relatively small sectionb(4m) of very thick seam (up to mapproximately25m); the coal is vitrinite-rich, high volatile bituminous. South Bulli mines most of the seam thickness, with coal being an intertinite-rich, medium volatile bituminous coal.Coal samples have been collected from in-seam gas drainage holes for evaluation of relative gas desorption rate (methane versus carbon dioxide). Following adsorption isotherms, petrography, chemistry (proximate and ultimate analysis) and pore structure analysis (carbon dioxide surface area, mercury porosimetry). Bomb desorption studies indicate different behaviours for methane desorption at these two collieries desorbed gas compositions at South Bulli show a small enrichment in methane content. The opposite is observed at Dartbrook. Both collieries show enrichment in CO2 in the residual content. Adsorption studies show marked variation in adsorbed gas contents for methane and carbon dioxide at each colliery and between collieries. These variations are related to differences in coal pore structure, chemistry and Petrology.

Laboratory studies of batch and continuous screening of ferrous sinter mixtures (4-0.5 mm) are described. The results are analysed by an equation derived from the first-order rate law for the condition of decreasing screen residue.The results of the studies show that the two screening operations are comparable in all respects if deck length in continuous screening and time in batch screening are interchanged.It is shown that the general screening process is determined by the numerical values of the screening rate constants of each of the particle sizes in the feed mixture and that the relationship between these constants and the particle size/screen aperture ratios is related to the appropriate probability function of the same ratios.It is also shown that the screening rates decrease exponentially with the amount of near-mesh material present in the feed and that oversize particles can increase these screening rates for some screen motions and decrease them for others.

Drill monitors for blasthole and exploration drills have been available to the mining industry since the 1970s. The early monitors were pen strip chart recorders which were developed for the oil drilling industry and adapted to mining. They recorded drilling parameters such as depth, pull-down pressure, torque, RPM, and bailing air pressure. While these recorders could generate a large volume of paper, the amount of useful data was minimal. The data was not summarised and required an engineer to interrupt the chart traces. Being a mechanical recorder, the devices were also susceptible to frequent failures.

The geological exploration and evaluation of coal reserves involves the appraisal of very large amounts of data. Computers afford an ideal means of handling and manipulating the data, thereby avoiding the laborious and expensive method of manually compiling the logs in full descriptive language. The Minad system of computer storage and retrieval of geological and analytical data is particularly suited to the description of cores and cuttings from exploration drill-holes. The encoded data is arranged in a 120-column computer output sheet format; descriptive geological information in a 54-column geolog and analytical information in a 64-column assaylog. The acquired data is quantitative, uniform and relatively complete and can be selectively retrieved for processing by a wide range of specialized computer programs developed for the coal mining industry. Visual retrieval of data for manual processing is facilitated by the use of simple codes and logical word abbreviations.

Prefeasibility planning and cost estimation of conveyor systems has historically been undertaken by comparing fixed plant transport requirements to that of similar systems in service. This paper describes the development of a prefeasibility conveyor technical design and cost estimation application using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) platform. The application tool known as D-Convey (Dachshund Convey) was developed with the goal enabling the end user:- to develop a technical model for conceptualised conveyor systems,- to perform economic analysis on the developed technical model, and - to conduct a comparative and risk analysis.An Excel VBA based platform was utilised to draw upon both the analytical and graphical capabilities of a spreadsheet. Some of the features of D-Convey system include a revolutionary dynamic graphical help system, known as the 'information pane' in lieu of traditional help files as well as the use of familiar graphical user interface elements such as the MS Office 2007 task ribbon. The D-Convey system incorporates material database allowing for mass handling prefeasibility estimation in other industries; it has been validated at a local quarry.

With the depleting iron reserves and difficult market conditions, precision in separation efficiency is of utmost importance. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. Computers and other microprocessor technology lead the world of technological change. Nevertheless, the real advances in the world at large are not necessarily in the computer industry, but in the industries whose economics benefit most by the advances that this computer revolution makes possible. The minerals industry has always been in the forefront of this advance. Technological change in the era preceding the industrial revolution, and the mining industry's part in it, provides an instructive lesson for what is happening today. Strong parallels can be drawn for predicting future advances. With each technological advance allowing more efficient production comes a re-alignment of economics - absolute and relative changes to prices, to quantities demanded, and to other market characteristics. This re-alignment applies not only to the mineral industry, but also to the world at large. Adaptability, rather than technical advancement per se is the key to survival and growth in a changing world. 'Adaptability' as a concept is easy to support. As an operational philosophy it is not so easy to implement. As a goal for planning, it is much harder to quantify. A fixed scenario of a future world may provide helpful guidelines, but a scenario that demands adaptability to an uncertain future world is much less definite. Of course, everyone else in the world is also uncertain about the future, and they are making their plans using different assumptions. This virtually guarantees that our future will turn out different to our expectations. This is in part what Hayek (1945) calls the 'knowledge' problem. Until now, most of the planning and technical research undertaken in the world has ignored this problem. This ignorance is a luxury that we can no longer afford. The paper looks at the history of technological change and highlights the characteristics of successful technological revolutions. 'Adaptability' to unforeseen circumstances is the key to success in this environment. The paper examines the knowledge problem from the perspective of the mineral industry, and suggests a number of directions for maximising the returns from application of computer technology in this important area.

Of the energy resources present in Australia, coal and uranium are by far the largest. These two resources ap- pear sufficient to satisfy Australia's energy needs beyond the immediately foreseeable future and long after the natural petroleum resources are exhausted or have ceased to play a significant role. By that time, coal could be converted in plants of very large size to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels which will be used as substitutes for pet- roleum fuels, particularly for transport. The basic role of uranium will be to supply electricity from nuclear power stations for heat and power requirements, thereby freeing non-coking coal largely for conversion purposes. The establishment of these enterprises will require a massive national effort and a high degree of co-ordination at the planning stage.

Golden Pig mine is in the central part of the Southern Cross greenstone belt within the Archaean Yilgarn craton. The mine has produced approximately 2.5 Mt of ore at 5.7 g/t Au to yield approximately 450 000 oz. The majority of gold mineralisation is hosted within extensively deformed and quartz-veined BIFÆs. In addition to the BIF-hosted mineralisation, an increasingly important part of the resource lies in the Taurus Lode, which is a N-NNW-trending amphibolite facies shear zone. The Taurus Lode lies within a continuous shear-zone that has a moderate to steeply WSW dipping foliation, and a mineral lineation of biotite, amphibole and pyrrhotite plunging consistently 10¦ S. Drive faces, subperpendicular to the foliation and lineation, consistently show evidence for syn-mineralisation reverse shear. Exposures parallel to the mineral lineation and perpendicular to the foliation reveal both sinistral and dextral asymmetries. These characteristics suggest that the vorticity axis of the Taurus Shear Zone is parallel to the mineral lineation, and that the simple shear sense is reverse. This geometry can arise when there is a major component of flattening across the shear zone, which may be due to interference between two adjacent granite domes. The BIF-hosted lodes plunge consistently 15¦ NNW coincident with the intersection of the axial planar cleavage of the regional folds and the Taurus Shear Zone. However, where the penetrative shear characteristics control the orientation and geometry of the mineralisation, oreshoots plunge SSW, parallel to the stretching and mineral lineations within the shear. The SSW plunge of strike extensive and laterally confined high-grade, economic ore shoots within the Taurus shear is fundamental to defining the economic mineralisation within this lode. Identifying the zones of maximum continuity and establishing the optimal position for future development will maximise ore extraction.

"The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. A new crude ilmenite beneficiation process was recently proposed that allowed for the preparation of a smelter grade ilmenite from ilmenite with elevated chromium content. Magnetising roasting was not utilised in the process. As part of this circuit an ilmenite low susceptible reject stream was produced that had a low magnetic susceptibility. In this article a magnetising roasting process was investigated to beneficiate this material. Tests were conducted on material produced by pilot scale simulations on a typical South African East Coast heavy mineral reserve. The results obtained were compared to those published in literature for crude ilmenite. The small-scale experiments were used to define approximate operational limits for the oxidising roasting of a low susceptible ilmenite low susceptible reject stream, although industrial roasting conditions may differ significantly from those obtained in laboratory units. In a next phase these results will be confirmed on pilot plant scale.

The portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was trialled to determine the extent and intensity of any hydrothermal alteration halo associated with gold mineralisation in the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) of the Otago Schist.   Twelve diamond drillholes through the HMSZ were analysed with the PIMA at a sample spacing of 1 m. The drillholes were selected on two traverses along the line of strike and down-dip of the mineralisation in and around Panel 2 of the Frasers underground development.   The study showed that the Hangingwall shear of the HMSZ has a more distinctive infrared signature in intersections with high grades. The Hangingwall shear in these drill holes is defined by a shift in the wavelength of the Al-OH absorption feature from ~2220 nm to <2210 nm. This shift is attributed to a change in the mineralogy from phengite to muscovite. Overprinting this trend in some of the drillholes is the presence of the 2210 nm Al-OH absorption feature, ascribed to kaolinite. Kaolinite also tends to be present in numerous other regions of the schist above the Hangingwall shear associated with steeply dipping faults and foliation parallel joints. In drill holes with low grades the Hangingwall shear does not exhibit any obvious infrared signature.   At the scale of study, the PIMA does not provide evidence for an alteration halo associated with hydrothermal mineralisation above the Hangingwall shear. Possible tectonic movement may have displaced any alteration halo that once existed, away from the zone of mineralisation. For this reason, PIMA apparently cannot be used for predicting the location of the Hangingwall shear during exploration drilling. However, the study did show that the PIMA could define the Hangingwall shear when the rocks were sufficiently altered and mineralised.

A laboratory study of size segregation is described using a model of a Paul Wurth hopper industrailly employed for blast furnace charg- ing purposes. Experimental charge materials used in the study were glass ballotin.i (1-4mm dia.) and sinter fines (0.25-4mm). The tracer material employed consisted of coloured glass beads. The results of the study show that the discharge stream from a Paul Wurth hopper is characterised by an initial negative segregation followed by a positive segregation and that this segregation pattern is a property of the hopper geometry and the filling conditions. A simple computer model based on experimental tracer concentration results is proposed. The measured segregation results and those predicted by the model show close agreement. Application of the results with special reference to the effect of size segregation on charge permeability in blast furnaces is also included.
