Previous studies of alluvial gold in Otago and Southland placer deposits have suggested a gold-mercury association for some deposits derived from Caples Terrane schist, whereas alluvial deposits on Torlesse Terrane basement typically have no mercury. A regional study of gold from Otago Schist vein deposits from both Caples and Torlesse Terranes has revealed the presence of both Au-Ag and Au-Ag-Hg alloys in both terranes. Au-Ag alloy (3 - 4 wt per cent Ag) is typical for gold found in most Torlesse vein deposits, and Au-Ag-Hg alloy (3 - 8 wt per cent Ag, 2 - 8 wt per cent Hg) is found in many Caples vein deposits. Au-Ag-Hg alloys are not exclusive to the Caples Terrane, however, as Au-Ag-Hg alloys with up to 4 wt per cent Hg are found in vein material from the Torlesse-hosted, HydeMacraes Shear Zone. In addition, not all Caples-hosted deposits have a gold-mercury association; gold grains from the Carrick and Invincible gold fields have no detectable mercury. The present study characterises gold compositions from various hard-rock vein deposits and has potential for determining placer-source relationships.

Mineral sands are different to almost any other commodity; however, it shares similarities with other commodity types, such as the importance of quality constraints of iron ore and coal or the importance of physical properties of diamonds. The mineral sands industry consists of two principal product streams; titanium dioxide minerals û in the form of rutile, ilmenite and leucoxene, and zircon. The principal valuable heavy minerals (VHM) include ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile and zircon. Variations of other titanium minerals occur between the end members of ilmenite and rutile, including pseudo rutile and anatase. Most mineral sands deposits are found in unconsolidated fossil shorelines several hundreds of metres to tens of kilometres and occasionally hundreds of kilometres inland from the present coastline. Mineral sands orebodies essentially fall into two categories based on the mode of deposition: alluvial or aeolian. Alluvial deposits are further split into marine beach placers (or strandlines) and lacustrine heavy mineral (HM) accumulations. Exploration for mineral sands involves the positive identification of key criteria leading to the focus of exploratory surface sampling, augering and drilling. Assaying is primarily focused around determining the percentage of HM contained within a given sample. Other results of interest include clay fines, sand and oversize. Metallurgical/mineralogical assessment is often undertaken via laboratory scale bench tests that replicate the wet concentration and dry mill processing routes. The most critical component in resource assessment for mineral sands is about quantifying HM grade, then mineralogical assemblage and then quality of those mineral species. This will determine whether a mineral sand final product is marketable or not. Mining of mineral sands is conducted either wet or dry. Wet methods are generally preferred for large tonnage, unconsolidated and low clay orebodies. Where ground conditions are hard and orebodies are small, high grade and discontinuous, dry mining techniques are generally employed. Concentration of mineral sands from the primary ore is carried out in two sections; wet, utilising sizing and gravity differentiation between HM, VHM, clay and quartz, and dry, exploiting the magnetic, electrostatic and to a lesser extent specific gravity (SG) properties of the minerals of interest. Mineral sands exploration, mining and processing faces the same operating challenges as the rest of the resource sector. Added to this are the issues that are unique to mineral sands and to which the industry devotes considerable resources to developing solutions.

With the advent of Computer aided mapping and surface modelling techniques Geologists and Engineers have had to become familiar with the capabilities and limitations of these systems to effectively use them. In this paper we will trace a short history of the rather rapid progress in this area. From this historical perspective we will make some observations and use these to guess at what the future holds. We hope that this paper will assist in clarifying the develop- ments in computer assisted mapping and modelling and promote thought on how these techniques may be best applied to the problems of the Mineral Industry.

Blasting is the most commonly used excavation technique in mining and civil engineering applications. Blasting induces strong ground motions and fracturing of rock mass in rock excavations. Particularly, high ground motions may also induce some instability problems of rock mass and structures nearby. Furthermore, it may cause some environmental problems due to noise as well as vibrations of structures near the populated areas. Furthermore, flyrocks is another major issue for the safety of people and damage to machinery and equipments when blasting is employed. In this study, the authors explore the ways how to estimate the ground motions as a function of distance, amount of explosive, number of holes. The ground motions were measured by stand-alone accelerometers developed by the first author and some empirical relations are developed. The effect of ground motions on the instability issues of benches such as sliding, toppling and rockfalls were investigated. Furthermore, the flyrock issue is investigated and some empirical relations to estimate the maximum distance of flyrocks from the blasting relations are compared and discussed. The purpose and current practice of cable trusses in underground coal mines is briefly outlined and details of various cable truss designs are presented. The main part of the paper describes the in-situ performance of cable trusses installed as secondary supports in gateroads and recovery roads of longwall coalfaces. The performance analysis is based on the results of in-situ monitoring carried out at a number of sites at two underground coal mines within Australia. Truss performance has been assessed as load developed in relation to roof convergence, face position and time. Additionally, the influence of strata conditions, installation pattern/density, roadway layout and geometry have been taken into account. An analytical model has been developed to predict truss loads. The principal variables are listed and the basis of the model is described. Based upon behaviour observed in the field the model has been progressively upgraded and validated against measured performance. Guidelines on truss performance and factors which influence it are presented and the implications of these to the use of cable trusses is discussed. Possible methods for improving truss performance in certain strata conditions are outlined and some comments are made on the value of cable trussing compared to cable bolting in these Situations.

As you are all aware, the theme of this con- ference is "International Resources Management". The subject matter of this particular session is "the mineral equation". Looking down the sub- ject matters and individual papers to be presented by other speakers in other sessions over the course of the conference, each particular item scheduled is in fact one of the variables that form an integral part of the total and complex mineral equation. Questions of reserves and resources as related to consumption must be viewed in the light of all those variables. Policy decisions taken by Government and eventually industry in these various fields will in themselves have their own impact on the defining of resources, and their ultimate availability to meet the needs of society by way of consumption. Undoubtedly, by the close of this conference, those of us in attendance will be better informed on the problems that confront the international minerals industry in the years ahead. Hopefully, we will have a better understanding of the views and philosophies of the wide range of participants in the industry-Government, private enterprise, and individuals who ultimately through their per- sonal aspirations in respect of their day to day needs will provide the final determinant as to the scope of the minerals industry.

Reasons for appointing a separate project team to manage a project are established. The selection of a project manager, based on the services they can provide and on their characteristics, skills and management style, is discussed. The consequences of selecting the wrong project manager are explored. A broad overview of the requirements for the project team is provided. Criteria for the selection of team members, and the role played by the project manager in this selection, are discussed. The levers that drive `on-time and on-budget' projects are discussed in terms of the project's vision, goals, controls, and incentives.

Kidston Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia has a 310 ha tailings impoundment that has undergone final closure rehabilitation. Kidston Gold Mine evaluated their closure options for this low acid generating tailings impoundment, and due to a lack of cover soils and the cost of importing material, the mine decided to investigate the possibility of direct vegetation onto the tailings impoundment surface. The mine subsequently embarked upon a well planned and detailed research program to determine the feasibility and sustainability of this closure option. The research program included vegetation trials, toxicology studies for metal uptake by vegetation, as well as a comprehensive closure water balance model for the tailings impoundment complex. This paper describes the results of the long-term closure water balance for the tailings impoundment complex for the pre-closure state of the impoundment, as well as predictions towards the impoundment performance once final rehabilitation of the tailings impoundment complex has been achieved. The water balance presented is unique in that it is founded on unsaturated flow principles and accounts in full the impacts of the surface flux boundary conditions. This novel approach enables the prediction of actual infiltration rates into the tailings impoundment surface, which in turn allows for the calculation of how much seepage will exit from the tailings dam toe drains.

Ore-bearing minerals that are located along microfractures are always susceptible to loss during the breakage and sampling of the material. Further losses occur with on-site sample preparation and splitting prior to laboratory analysis. In these cases solid whole rock channel or core samples should be handled with due care to ensure all fines and loose particles are collected and included in the sample for total chemical analysis.Similarly open hole and reverse circulation drill methods are not usable in areas containing old mine workings, heavily fractured ground or highly degraded/oxidised mineral assemblages. Nor are these methods usable to assess a bulk mineable target where the enriched zones were peripheral to or between old mine cavities.

The electrical conductivity of electrolytes is very important in metal electrowinning and electrorefining processes as it has a very large influence on the energy consumption. There are few measurements of the electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes available. The electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes were measured over the following range of concentrations, 100 to 200 g/L H2SO4, 0 to 80 g/L Zn and 0 to 20 g/L Mg, at temperatures from 25 to 60 C. The specific conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes may be expressed as a function of concentrations of sulphuric acid, zinc and magnesium and temperature by the following equation: k(S/cm) = 0.004 + 0.00115 t + 0.00282 [H2SO4] t - 0.00114 [M] t + 0.3442 [H2SO4] - 0.0451 [1-12SO4]2 - 0.1058 [M]ò[H2SO4] - 0.0224 (M] + 0.0286 [M] 2 where t is temperature (C), [H2S04](moI/L) is sulphuric acid concentration and [M](mol/L) is a sum of zinc and magnesium concentrations, ([Zn]+[Mg]). The specific conductivity of zinc electrolytes is a function of the concentrations of the hydrogen ion and free water molecule, which are calculated by taking into account the second ionisation constant of sulphuric acid and the stability- constants of zinc-sulphate and magnesium-sulphate complexes at 25 C.

Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

Coal exploration has traditionally involved the acquisition of data to enable a resource to be quantified and qualified to the extent that its economic potential can be determined. This process commonly relied on: drilling to determine the depth and thickness of coal seams, broad characterisation of the overburden and interburden, and to provide cores for coal quality analyses; basic wireline logging to cross-check the depth and thickness of coal seams and provide some indication of rock mass strength; and basic surface geophysics and remote sensing to identify major geological structures. In recent years, the adoption of the JORC Code as a basis for the reporting of resources and reserves has placed a greater emphasis on the need for detailed, reproducible data sets that not only satisfy the traditional requirements of mine planners, but also satisfy the governance requirements of corporate and financial institutions. Similarly, the development of sophisticated numerical modelling techniques for use in both open cut and underground mine design, has seen a greater demand for precise geotechnical data, in situ stress characterisation and hydrological information as routine input to the design process. These requirements, coupled with the prevailing trend toward high capital, relatively inflexible mining techniques less tolerant of geological surprises, and the need for consideration of environmental issues such as groundwater impacts and surface subsidence, requires that modern exploration programs be multifaceted, and designed to commence capturing data relevant to ædownstream issuesÆ even during the initial phases of exploration planning.

The Tugun Bypass Tunnel in Gold Coast, Australia was constructed using diaphragm walls with the top-down cut-and-cover method to allow simultaneous construction of an airport runway extension above the tunnel, whilst excavation of the tunnel continued underneath. The tunnel was built in an environment of high groundwater table and deep deposits of alluvial and estuarine soils with the toes of the walls founded in soil deposits. There was a potential risk for differential settlements to occur between the diaphragm wall panels, caused by the runway fill placed over the tunnel roof during excavation. Dewatering within the diaphragm walls was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnel. The tunnel was also built in an area where environmental considerations were of great importance. Three-dimensional numerical modelling was undertaken to predict the differential settlements of the tunnel with considerations of varying subsurface profile, staged excavation and dewatering, non- uniform surface loading and complex soil-structure interaction. Field instrumentation and monitoring was implemented to confirm numerical predictions.

Eutrophication of water bodies is one of the most severe environmental problems worldwide. It is well known that the availability of phosphate, as the limiting nutrient, is crucial for increased primary production and eutrophication. Calcite exhibits positive surface charge in most natural waters and can therefore be used for phosphate immobilisation. In this study, sorption experiments were performed in order to test different calcite materials regarding their suitability for use in restoration of eutrophic lakes. These short-term experiments were performed under different hydrochemical conditions (pH, SICC, initial dissolved P concentration) and with varying calcite properties (specific surface area and amount) in order to predict the long-term stability of the Ca-P-bonds. Peculiar shapes of isotherms that could not be explained only by adsorption processes were detected in the individual experiments. Depending on the residual P-concentration in solution, the isotherms can be divided into three sections indicating different processes responsible for the P-fixation on calcite surfaces. Adsorption prevails in equilibrium with lowest residual P-concentrations. The inflection of the isotherm at moderate residual P-concentrations suggests that precipitation and transformation of a Ca-P compound becomes dominant. This is supported by characteristic Ca/P-ratios for different Ca-P-compounds (b-tri- calcium-phosphate, octa-calcium-phosphate). On the new surface, phosphate ions again are fixed by adsorption. The observed transformation of P-bonding is crucial for sustainable phosphate immobilisation on calcite surfaces. While pure adsorption processes are reversible, the development of a thermodynamically stable Ca-P-phase, like hydroxylapatite, will lead to a lasting immobilisation of phosphate.

Deposits of low-grade iron ores containing abundant goethite are distributed across the world. A common difficulty associated with beneficiating goethitic-rich ores is the poor liberation characteristics of the iron-bearing minerals which often contain finely disseminated gangue minerals such as kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. Microwave-assisted heating has been proposed as an effective way of inducing dehydroxylation and associated mineral transformations in order to beneficiate low-grade goethitic ores. In this research, the mineral transformations occurring in a low-grade goethite-rich sample using microwave radiation was studied. Roasting conditions (up to 1000°C and under various CO/CO2 gas atmospheres) were designed to generate a magnetic product from a goethite-rich, reject waste stream sample sourced from an iron ore processing site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Conditions (T, pO2) for transforming the raw material from hydrated goethite to hematite and eventually to magnetite are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the raw material and roast products were conducted using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques to identify the mineralogical and chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment. Further steps are suggested to optimise the microwave-assisted magnetising roasting and correlate it with the application of magnetic separation techniques to maximise the efficiency of upgrading the iron content in low-grade iron ores.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Pownceby, M I, 2017. "The Cerro Corona mine consists of a Cu-Au porphyry deposit located in the Andes of northern Peru. The deposit comprises a typical Cu-Au multiphase porphyry mineralisation that has been overprinted by an epithermal event. This has generated a complex pattern of argillic alteration facies, which was accompanied by a locally structural-controlled Au-Cu mineralisation with the presence of gold and limited Cu sulfides and sulfosalts. These features, along with the porphyry-style mineralisation, produced a multifaceted occurrence of gold.Since the beginning of operations at Cerro Corona in 2008 there has been a continuous improvement of the geological and mineralogical knowledge. All mineralogical studies have mainly focused on host rock types and, to a lesser extent, alteration minerals, but little work has been done on the mineralisation itself. As a consequence, limited mineralogical information was available for use in the process optimisation initiatives.In the last two years, a series of mineralogical characterisation studies were undertaken with two main goals. First, to gain an understanding of the mineralisation genesis and second, to obtain a detailed characterisation of copper and gold minerals to support ongoing process optimisation. The first goal was achieved by conventional optical microscopy while the second required electronic microscopy and other microanalyses due to the necessity of quantifying several minerals of interest for the processing.The results were used to refine pre-existing geometallurgical domains, explain copper and gold losses in the flotation process and to some extent, improve copper and gold recoveries. The mineralogical characterisation is an ongoing work. As Australia’s mining industry painfully retrenches, mining executives and managers strive to remain viable by seeking significant productivity increases directly through process improvement and indirectly by improving leadership and workplace culture, the most powerful determinant of productivity. Culture is the combination of people’s attitudes and behaviour, together with leadership values and focus.Comprehensive new and automated data collection and management systems promise much for improving productivity, yet despite rapid advances in measurement and sharing of data, the use of data can reduce productivity unless behavioural aspects are considered and designed as part of implementation. This is because systems drive behaviour that in turn shapes attitudes to determine culture.Experience from many mine sites and other industries in three countries confirm that the most powerful drivers of people’s behaviour are the Measurement-Analysis-Reporting system and business leadership.This paper discusses fundamentals of practical, statistically valid process measurement, analysis and reporting systems before discussing associated leadership considerations for sustained improvement in safety, productivity, employee retention, leadership, accountability and commercial returns.The key to productivity improvement is improving core processes and important support processes. In turn, the key to process improvement is identifying the major process components and their interaction by measuring and then analysing their variation and level of performance. Understanding variation is often neglected yet is usually highly significant. It is essential that the fundamentals of statistically valid yet practical process and data analysis are understood and incorporated into system design to ensure productive, informed behaviour.The design and use of Measurement-Analysis-Reporting systems influences behaviour most profoundly and determines people’s effectiveness. Behavioural aspects are detailed by focusing on six primary drivers of human behaviour and five basic systems for managing businesses. These are integrated in a seven-step process and productivity improvement methodology that combines statistical, analytical, systems and behavioural factors.The paper includes development, implementation and tracking of a project plan for improving management and leadership systems to drive aligned behaviours. Over the last 15 years the contract mining concept has developed into an integral part of the Australian mining industry. Today it is a $2 billion per annum industry with the potential to continue to grow at a rate of between ten and 20 per cent. Australian contract miners have also exported the concept overseas where growth prospects are unlimited. The industry today is at a cross-road where both contractors and mine owners must consider the current state of the contract mining industry and where it is heading. To look at the present and the future, it is necessary to look back at the history of contract mining and why it has developed. Current industry concerns can then be summarised and the areas that need to be considered to enable the industry to prosper, reviewed. The ultimate goal is to reach solutions with benefits to both the mining companies and the contractors.

The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

The igneous intrusions in SE Papua New Guinea are part of a sub-volcanic to plutonic, high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic suite. High-K andesitic to dacitic intrusives on Misima and Woodlark Islands, and shoshonitic intrusives in Milne Bay and the eastern Owen Stanley Ranges are related to late Cenozoic andesitic volcanism. Both suites are associated with epithermal Au-Ag deposits and weak porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. All significant alluvial and lode gold occurrences in the region are spatially related to intrusions. Intrusions in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and near Mt Suckling are core plutons related to basement doming, and appear to have no association with either volcanism or hydrothermal mineralisation. The core plutons are not petrochemi:ally distinct from the volcano-re:-ed Intrusions.
