Bauxite mining on Cape York Peninsula (CYP) commenced in the early 1960s in the region surrounding the town of Weipa. Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) operates its bauxite mines on the homelands of 11 Indigenous Traditional Owner groups. The mining activity currently operates under three Aboriginal Agreements including an Indigenous Land Use Agreement – the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement (WCCCA) – which provides RTA with access to the land in return for a range of benefits to the Traditional Owners, including employment, training, royalty payments and future relinquishment of the land (Klimenko and Evans, 2009). Despite reports of some ‘good progress’ in meeting the terms of the WCCCA (Klimenko and Evans, 2009, p 5), many of the region’s Traditional Owners remain dissatisfied. Revegetation at Perseverance Mining's Nagambie Gold Project is an excellent example of cost effective revegetation in the Central Victorian Goldfields. Work has centred on waste rock dumps, vegetative screens, amenity planting and revegetation trials on cyanide heap leach pads. A wetland is under construction and in consultation with farmers, waste heaps were planted with perennial pasture species.The area treated to date is 18 hectares comprising: 16 hectares of pasture and two hectares of trees/understory. Direct seeding and tubestock planting has cost $16,464. Cost effective revegetation demands careful planning from the EES stage onwards. The Government agreed rehabilitation plan should be comprehensive, realistic and above all flexible. This document must be kept in mind during the mining operation.

The word "optimization", refers to the search of an economic optimum, or, more precisely, to the choice of technical parameters which will define the more profitable mining project, knowing the values of the economic parameters. In fact, there is no direct way to perform this optimization, because the extremely large number of technical factors involved, from the type of working and its selectivity to the characteristics of the mill and its flexibility, makes it impossible to make a comprehensive survey of all possible projects. Beside, it would be meaningless to engage in such a task as the deposits themselves are not really known, but only estimated, with sometimes a high level of imprecision. Not to mention the numerical instability which would affect such a computation! In addition, the "best" project is not necessarily the one which strictly maximizes a given profit formula. There also exist human factors which have to be complied with, when choosing the cutoff grades for instance. Finally, there are other non-numerical factors which interfere with the choice between several projects: the shape of the bottom of a pit of the layout of the access road for instance.

The uranium markets are at present well covered by available producers. However the predicted increase in demand, recently reinforc- ed by the Arab oil crisis, will by, the early 1980s'outdistance supply. Current trends are towards light water reactors with-fast breeder reactors not expected to make any significant impact to the mid 1980s. The proposed lifting of the US embargo on the use of foreign uranium in US reactors will expand the market available to non US producers. A balancing in supply and demand worldwide will probably occur in the early 1980s. Australia's potential producers at present hold about 20 percent of the worlds U308 resources. Three companies, have contracts to supply nearly 10 900 tonnes of U308 between now and 1986 which represents about 1 percent of the predicted demand to 1986. Australian producers need to establish themselves more firmly in the market place in order that other countries will not replace us. Contracts can be written now which will allow for world market prices to be paid in the future, thus protecting the Australian producer.

The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water- jet-assisted cutting system and measured dust levels during the cutting of a simulated coal block. The block was cut dry, at a conventional water spray pressure of 1 MPa and with water-jet-assisted cutting pressures ranging from 7 to 40 MPa. At water pressures of 20 MPa and higher, dust concentrations were reduced by as much as 85 % via water-jet-assisted cutting in comparison with conventional water sprays. This reduction was achieved without any increase in the water flow rate.

AT Broken Hill, N.S.W., where flotation is tbe final stage in concentration, the gangue minerals are discharged as an aqueous pulp, and water recovery from the pulp being essential, provision must be made for the clisposal of the solids and for the return of the clear water to the cemcentrating mill circuit. This water also contains an appreciable quantity of flotation reagents, and is more effective for flotation than supply water.In the development of a scheme for the disposal of large quantities of residues, several of the more important factors for consideration are:(a) Tonnage to be handled.(b) Grain size of residues and pulp density.(c) Dewatering of residues and return of clear water to mill circuit.(d) Possible uses of residues.-A varying proportion of sand residues is used for underground filling, and to a limited extent for yoncrete making and other engineering work.(e) Choice of a suitable dumping area. - Before deciding upon this area consideration will be given to possible future operations so that the dump will not be likely to interfere with any development which may be necessary. Characterising the weight percentage of each mineral in base metal ores is an integral part of assessing the quality of an ore in terms of its processing properties. The Rietveld method, which uses X-ray diffraction data, has been applied to routinely quantify the minerals in lead/zinc and copper ores from Mount Isa Mines Limited and supergene copper ores from Ernest Henry Mining as well as their related products from the concentrators. The Rietveld method has been tested by comparing Rietveld mineral data with a standard sample with known mineral weight percentages and comparing Rietveld mineral data with mineral data calculated from elemental assays where the element only exists in one mineral such as lead in galena. Where this latter situation does not occur, the Rietveld method has been checked with both elemental and optical microscope data. In all cases, there is a good correspondence between the Rietveld data and the data it was checked against with absolute differences generally in the range of 0.5 to 3 wt per cent. The Rietveld method generally quantifies all minerals occurring over 1 wt per cent in one analysis and is less expensive and more routine compared to traditional methods such as optical microscope point counting. The Rietveld method can be applied to many stages of the mining cycle such as exploration, feasibility studies, mining, minerals processing and for environmental studies.

In recent years, ultrasonic comminution technology has been developed at the Utah Comminution Center. An ultrasonic grinding device was assembled and investigated. An ultrasonic transducer system has been significantly improved by using a special type of piezoelectric ceramic and preloading to 4.1 x le kPa to obtain maximum strength. The improved system provides constant and rapid vibratory promotion of fatigue fracture resulting in more effective breakage. The design principles for an ultrasonic mill are developed in this paper. Size reduction was successfully achieved in the ultrasonic nip-roll device for a variety of materials. Ultrasonic comminution has repeatedly demonstrated the capability of producing fine particles from a variety of materials. A comparison between ultrasonic grinding and dry ball milling of limestone showed that the ultrasonic device produced much narrower size distributions than the ball mill. This trend is especially obvious in the coarse size range where few particles remain, and in the fine size range where overgrinding is prevented. This behavior might have some interesting applications in areas other than mineral processing like powder metallurgy or material science where narrow and controlled product sizes are required for the successful elaboration of high-technology ceramics and glasses. Ultrasonic comminution has a significant advantage in the accurate control of the product size.

The ore deposits of the Oobar mining field are confined to sediments of the Early Devonian Cobar Supergroup. The mineralisation is discordant to bedding and parallel to cleavage. The structural association is variable with the deposits near the eastern margin of the Cobar Basin formed in zones of deformation and faulting. The Elura deposit located further to the west is in less deformed sediments within the core of a small anticline. There are wide variations in ore type fran lad sulphide chalcopyrite - pyrrhotite - pyrite to high sulphide sphalerite - galena - pyrrhotite - pyrite assemblages. The deposits ccnmonly contain an inner zone of quartz - sulphide - chlorite veining grading outwards into a chlorite halo containing quartz - carbonate veining. The Elura deposit differs in having an inner massive sulphide zone surrounded by a zone of big-Fe carbonate formation. The mineralisation probably formed during regional metamorphism and deformation in the Early Carboniferous. A possible genetic model involves the injection of metal bearing hydrothermal fluids formed in the upper mantle or lower crust up basement structures into the overlying Cobar Supergroup sediments. An alternate model proposes the leaching of metals from the sediments by brines formed during metamorphism and subsequent emplacement in favourable structural zones.

Underground mining with the cut and fill method has been declining during the past decade or so, being replaced mostly by sublevel open stoping methods. During 1983 the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. (AMIRA) commissioned a review of the method, with the aim of compiling the state-of-the-art, indicating future trends and recommending topics for research that would be needed to support this future mining. Mines using the cut and fill method in Australia and three other countries were visited to compile current practices and expected developments.Cut and fill is mostly used where geological and ground conditions are unsuitable for open or caving methods. These range from narrow, irregular orebodies to wide, massive orebodies where pillars are retained in ore. There is significant potential for improvement and further development of the method. It may then be used in a broader range of conditions and for orebodies that may not otherwise be viable to mine.

Mining companies in order to compete and succeed in being viable business propositions must look to the future and select mining methods which guarantee improved efficiency and productivity as well as lower costs.A mining company in adopting a method of mining must now select the equipment most compatible. To some mines compatible equipment may mean the use of drilling jumbos to replace hand held rock drills or the use of load haul dump units to replace scrapers. To other more mechanized mines compatible equipment may mean the use of raise borers and road heading machines. The right decision will be where equipment compliments method in such a way that the working environment is improved, productivity is maximized, cost if reduced and all profit opportunities are optimized. An example of such is where the use of improved mining techniques in underground operations may see cut off grades reduced. By selectively mining these lower grade orebodies, smaller operation's ore reserves improve and the capacity for continued growth is enhanced.

The mIning operations of Bougainville Copper Pty. Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea.C.R.A. Exploration Pty. Limited first established mineralization in the Panguna area in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 900,000,000 long tons of ore assaying 0·48 per cent copper and 0·36 dwt/ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July, 1969 enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons/day. The concentrate will be pnmped as a slurry through a 16 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 MW steam power station, and access roads.

Solution transport of gold and silver has occurred as a result of the chemical weathering of many Western Australian epigenetic gold deposits. Evidence for the remobilization of gold exists in the form of small crystalline octahedra, mustard gold, flake gold, and coatings on iron-oxide. This "secondary" gold is of high purity (low silver content). It is believed that the high chloride content of laterite profiles combined with the acid produced by the oxidation and hydrolysis (ferrolysis) of iron has caused dissolution of Au/Ag and Au/Te alloys. Gold, and less frequently silver, is subsequently reprecipitated in the profile nearby.Pyrite, which is a ubiquitous accessory of gold in vein or lode systems, is probably an important source of iron for the development of acidity. Where carbonate is abundant in the primary assemblage, neutralization directs the oxidation of sulphide to a path which produces thiosulphate, and an alternative type of Au/Ag oxidation process. Sulphide/carbonate ratios in the vein system, and adjacent wallrock are seen as important in determining the course and extent of remobilization in the oxidized zone of gold deposits.

The Newmont Waihi Operations are centred on the Martha mine at Waihi, New Zealand. The mine has produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold from both openpit and underground sources since operations began in 1878. The current open pit operations commenced in 1988 and in the year to 30 June 2002 produced 129,790 ounces of gold at a cash cost of USD122 per ounce. Aspects of the formation, decomposition and acid solubility of zinc ferrite were examined to find potential ways of increasing the recovery of zinc from a calcination process of mineral concentrates. Ferrite can begin to form within 2 hours at 450¦C. while complete reaction can occur after 35 minutes at 700¦C. The nature of the starting materials has a pronounced effect on the rate of formation and below 700¦C. ZnSO4 and Fe2O3 proved to be the least reactive of the materials investigated. It is possible that iron in a mineral admixed h sphalerite can be converted to a relatively inactive form, however, it does not seem possible to prevent zince f formation when iron is in the sphalerite lattice. At the two temperatures examined, 650¦C. and 700¦C, the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere accelerate .e formation of ferrite. Prolonged exposure to such atmospheres, however, caused the ferrite to decompose to ZnSO4 and Fe203. The optimum temperature for decomposition was 650¦C. and it was virtually complete within 2 hours in an atmosphere of 10% SO2 in air. Zinc ferrite was also decomposed by CO at low concentrations, and by heating with limestone at 1000¦C. for at least 2 hours. The solubility of zinc ferrite in acid was influenced by the starting materials used. As both the reaction temperature and the time at temperature increased the acid solubility decreased. Pilot-Plant Testing of Ammoniacal-Cyanidation for Gold Recovery from Copper Gold-Bearing Ore The results of pilot-plant tested ammoniacal-cyanidation of gold recovery from copper gold-bearing ore are presented in this paper. This ore is from a deposit of Russian Federation with gold and copper grade 9.5 g/t and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Copper is largely present as malachite and azurite. The presence of chalcopyrite and bornite is also observed. In order to recover gold, gravity is recommended. Two options of ammoniacal-cyanidation using leaching of gravity tails, CIP and filtration, were tested. It was found that ammoniacal-cyanidation using filtration of leaching tailings and recycled solutions is the most optimal option. The proposed flow sheet provides for 89.7 per cent gold recovery from gravity tailings at the consumption of NaCN 0.9 kg/t and (NH4)2CO3 7.5 - 9 kg/t. Compared to conventional cyanidation, this technology decreases the consumption of sodium cyanide from 4 up to 0.9 kg/t at the same gold recovery. It can be recommended for the treatment of copper gold-bearing ores with the similar composition.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) excavation is nowadays more and more considered a valuable alternative to conventional tunnelling. As a matter of fact, thanks to its advantages such as greater rate of advance and safer working conditions, the application of TBMs has increased significantly in recent years. Despite the possible excellent performance of TBMs in favourable ground conditions, the advance rates could be significantly slowed down or even obstructed in limiting geological situations. This obviously traduces in potentially longer tunnel construction times and higher costs and, therefore, in a preference for conventional method. One of the major geological hazards encountered during tunnel construction, is related to the presence of fault zones or heavily jointed and fractured rocks. The most common geotechnical problems resulting from tunnelling in these difficult conditions include the instability of the excavation face, instabilities of side-walls producing large overbreaks on the tunnel profile, excessive deformations in case of squeezing grounds, frequently changing stresses in terms of magnitude and direction, high water inflows, etc. The decisions aids for tunnelling (DAT) is a model and a computer code that can be used to evaluate the influence of the uncertainties related to both the geological/geotechnical conditions and the construction process on final tunnel construction time and costs. In this framework, the DAT is used for assessing the effects that challenging ground conditions may have on tunnelling operations in terms of costs and delays. This is done by simulating the tunnel construction considering several geological profiles. The aim of the study is comparing different excavation methods (ie drill and blast versus TBM) in changing ground conditions along the tunnel alignment ranging from good rock, to very poor and fractured formations. For too long we, as an industry, have borne the brunt of irrational claims, poor science and even worse, journalism with regards to our affect on the environment. To some of us, the overwhelming media attention on greenhouse warming, the polluting outputs of mineral processing or unthinkable depletion of natural resources has left us embarrassed and more unfortunately has turned bright young people away from a career in the minerals industry.This paper shows the hypocrisy associated with an element of the green movement and dispels some general myths on mining disseminated by radical environmentalists.The fallacy of the greenhouse warming effect will be scrutinised by common sense and the mining industryÆs use of land will be discussed and put in proper perspective.Problems associated with safety and emissions and the means to overcome such are discussed briefly.
