Over the past five years in coalmine slope evaluation the application of 3D modelling has increased significantly as software has become more user friendly but also areas requiring evaluation have become increasingly complex. Often simplistic 2D Limit Equilibrium modelling and analysis has been poorly used to solve slope stability issues by back analysis and subsequent forward predictive analysis. A plane strain condition with slope movement perpendicular to the slope strike is assumed where in reality the problem is more complex. This often leads to a misinterpretation of the failure mechanism because the failure mechanism being modelled in 2D does not generally represent the actual failure mechanism observed in the pit, with 2D modelling often oversimplifying a slope. This paper presents a case study where the initial slope assessment and remedial design evaluation was undertaken as a 2D Limit Equilibrium model which led to an overly conservative and costly remedial solution being implemented. Subsequent modelling of the slope using both 3D Limit Equilibrium and Finite Element methods were able to provide a better understanding of the structural complexities associated and correlate well with slope monitoring data to create a more realistic outcome.

Production mine geology must be accurate and efficient in order to reduce risk and ensure that ore value and mining operation revenue are maximised. Present grade control practices are commonly based on outmoded and inaccurate 2D geological mapping techniques where spatial relationships are estimated by eye, sketched by hand and projected to arbitrary reference planes. The 3D mapping approach outlined in this paper integrates 3D photogrammetric imagery with implicit modelling techniques to enable more accurate grade control and reconciliation in underground mines. High-resolution stereo photographs are taken of daily ore development headings. Ore contacts are traced directly on a 2D face photo using a stylus and rugged tablet. Area-weighted face grades are estimated and calculated on mapped 2D face planes. In the office, a 3D photorealistic mesh is processed and georeferenced. 2D face mapping data is transformed into its actual 3D location and true 3D mine mapping is performed by digitising oriented 3D polylines representing ore contacts and other geological features directly onto the image surface. Three-dimensional spatial relationships are fixed, eliminating the projection error of traditional 2D methods. Ore envelope and waste solids are modelled within the closed, drift-round mesh. Volume-weighted ore envelope and round grades, as well as round volume and tonnage, are calculated. Ore/waste classifications, grade, tonnage and per cent dilution are quantified per round, visually assessed in 3D and reconciled with short- and long-term models on a daily basis. Updated geological continuity models provide geological guidance in development headings under geological control and accurate 3D structural and form-line mapping improves definition drilling and stope planning. Three-dimensional imagery provides a permanent detailed survey and geological record of mine workings that can be revisited virtually to reinterpret geological ore controls in light of new observations and insights. In addition images can be used to monitor daily production performance, create training scenarios for miners, engineers and geologists and prepare management presentations. This approach adds value to underground mines by improving the accuracy and efficiency of mine geology practices. We report 40Ar/39Ar ages for adularia and illite from veins and wall rocks at the Waihi and Favona deposits, in the Waihi district. One sample of vein adularia from the Favona deposit yielded a plateau age of 6.04 ¦ 0.06 (la) Ma, and two samples of vein adularia from the Waihi deposit yielded plateau ages of 6.17 ¦ 0.03 and 6.17 ¦ 0.09 Ma. Two samples of wall rock adularia from the Waihi deposit yielded plateau ages of 6.07 ¦ 0.06 and 6.08 ¦ 0.03 Ma. Adularia ages overlap at the 2s level, and we do not consider them to be significantly different. Two samples of illite from wall rocks at Favona have total gas ages of 5.66 ¦ 0.04 and 5.65 ¦ 0.04 Ma, and retention ages of 6.57 ¦ 0.04 and 6.61 ¦ 0.04 Ma, whereas one sample of vein illite yielded a total gas age of 5.29 ¦ 0.17 Ma, and a retention age of 6.26 ¦ 0.19 Ma. The total gas ages of illite are minimum ages that are equivalent to conventional K/Ar analyses, whereas retention ages of illite are maximum ages. Although interpretation of the illite data is complicated, the adularia results strongly suggest that the Waihi and Favona deposits formed contemporaneously in the same fossil geothermal system at 6.0 to 6.1 Ma.

One of great challenges is to determine the exact timing of gold mineralisation in centralVictoria due to suitable materials and/or geochronological techniques. Here we report new mica and pyrite 40Ar/39Ar age data by laser probe and step-heating furnace analyses, and discuss problems in data collection and interpretation. Beach sand minerals from the volcanic rock structures of the Drakensberg, Kwazulu-Natal, (South Africa) have been processed. Screening, flotation, spiral concentration and magnetic separation methods were used either separately or successively in an attempt to concentrate monazite minerals. Products thereof and those from a long time (up to 72 hours) microwaves treatment of the finally produced ilmenite-bearing minerals have been studied using the M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy. The 57Fe M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy has demonstrated its versatility and power in monitoring the ilmenite internal reduction mechanism and products and, in characterising the iron-bearing phases contained in different products from the beach sand minerals processing. Microwaves heating of ilmenite for up to 38 hours reduced internally the Fe3+ from the ilmeniteÆs structure. A more prolonged microwaves heating (up to 72 hours) re-oxidised the mineral. 61 per cent natural ilmenite recovery was obtained in the floating products of a spiral concentrated -212+106 ¦m screened and beach sand minerals fraction. A preferential concentration of hematite with a 62 per cent recovery was found in the sinking products while the combination of screening-spiral separation-magnetic separation and flotation yielded a floating product with the highest ilmenite and the highest hematite abundanceÆs (71 per cent, 19 per cent respectively). A natural ilmenite containing 87 per cent ilmenite and 13 per cent hematite could be produced and extracted from the sinking products of the flotation process collected subsequently to the spiral concentration and the initial screening.

A Data Acquisition System with a capacity to monitor 2000 analog instruments has been installed at the mines operated by the Zinc Lorporation, Limited and New broken hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/LVbHC), New South Wales, Australia. Since commissioning in March, 1982, the system has proved its value in providing up-to-date information to both Rock Mechanics and Mining personnel. The paper describes the function of the major software and hardware components of the system, and identifies the advantages that an on-line monitoring system provides in the day-to-day operation of a large underground mine.

Projected cooling requirements for ERPM led to the first proposals for the large- scale use of ice for mine cooling in the early 1980's. Following successful research into ice conveying and ice melting a large ice plant was commissioned at Harmony in 1985 and a much larger 6000 ton per day plant is presently under construction at ERPM. A brief description of the mining project is given, followed by general descriptions of the surface ice plants and the ice conveying system, the systems for using the ice for mine cooling, and the control of the whole ice cooling System.

"The efficiency of the truck-shovel haulage system is significantly influenced by the truck fleet size. A discrete event simulation model with 3D animation has been developed to estimate the productivity of a truck-shovel network system, shovel efficiency, truck cycle time, truck utilisation and the optimal fleet size. The simulation model considers the dynamic variability of traffic conditions and also the truck as an individual entity. Banks' focus in using cash flow methods can differ markedly from that of equity investors. This paper attempts to explain and describe bankers' approach by: ò outlining the fundamental difference between banks' and investors' risk / return profiles. ò describing lenders' consequent use of cash flow methods in mineral valuation. areas. explaining lenders' specific treatment of key risk Fundamental to understanding banks' appraisal of mineral projects is the appreciation that lenders have a basically different risk profile and outlook from those familiar to equity investors. Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks' principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders' risk / return position is outlined.

From an examination of the processes used in extractive metallurgy a hierarchy of process aims is identified, these aims are separation, compound formation,, metal production and metal purification. The application of this methodology to process flowsheet development is described.

DTA curves of synthesis lead sulfide and commercial. lead concentrates during oxidation were measured to clarify the mechanism of ox- idation of lead sulfide. The oxidation reac tions could be divided to elementary reactions with production of basic lead sulfates such as 2PbO PbSO4. An existance of iron sulfide played an important role of the oxidation of lead concentrates. The oxidation rates of lead sulfide were measured in the wide range of oxygen potenti- als using IR type SO2 gas-meter. The oxidation rates under low Po 2 which corresponds to the direct oxidation smelting were much lower than those obtained under high Pot. The combustion temperatures of lead sulfide were also measured by hot thermocouple method. Those values were extremly low compar- ing the oxidation temperatures obtained by DTA.

For low density materials such as coal, density-based fractionation of particles via the sink-float method is relatively simple due to the availability of liquids of suitable density; however, for high density minerals, suitable heavy liquids are less available and those that are available are expensive and pose significant hazards. At best, sink-float separation can be performed up to densities of 4400 kg/m3 with the use of Clerici’s solution at elevated temperatures. Hence the direct measurement of grade-recovery and density-partition curves is problematic. Therefore, in most cases, beneficiation plants must rely on methods such as QEMSCAN, density tracer particles or very limited information to guide them in the design and optimisation of their plants.This paper describes a density-fractionation method utilising laminar flow through a system of parallel inclined channels to generate a series of overflow fractions at different flow velocities. Here the particles are subject to precise hydrodynamic forces with minimal dispersion or mixing. The size distribution of each overflow fraction at a given flow velocity is obtained using a laser particle size analyser, and combined with a laminar flow model to deduce the corresponding density distribution. The paper describes the application of the method to measure the separation achieved using a REFLUX Classifier to obtain the corresponding feed, product and reject ‘washability curves’, and in turn the full partition surface. A short account is given of the theory and practice of determining the true U3O8 content of ore samples by the determination of the beta and gamma activities separately, using the method of Eichholz and his associates.It is shown that, despite the variation of sample activity without change in U3O8 content, the true U3O8 value can still be found.Thorium can be determined simultaneously if this element is also present.

Coalmines, like any other mine, generally involve the classic three-staged approach to mining studies; namely concept, pre-feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility studies (Cusworth, 2012). Subsequent to these studies, and in instances parallel to these studies, the commitment to an environmental impact statement (EIS) is made in order to secure both state and federal development consent. In recent times, the sentiment to both mining and coal is changing whereby the traditional approaches to mine planning and economic evaluation is complicated by evolving environmental legislation, expectations and time frames. It is all too common to take shortcuts in the development of projects in order to create the perception of cost savings and expediting the delivery timeline. Atkins (2016) points out that: boards of so many small to mid-tier mining companies, and a few majors, focus on relentless project delivery too early in the project process, with so little time and effort applied to risk analysis and option development. Unforeseen risks can cost any timeline or budget far more than the effort required assessing and mitigating these. Blasting is one of the most commonly used strategies for excavation in civil and mining engineering. Yet blasting can also bring along such undesirable effects as ground vibrations and soil disturbance. Numerical analysis is a powerful tool for estimating the effects of blasting and improving blasting design. In this research, a constitutive model for sand is proposed for the numerical analysis of blast-induced ground motions and wave propagation in soil mass. In the model, three model surfaces, ie the critical surface, the dilatancy surface and the bounding surface, are defined following the bounding surface hypoplasticity framework. The strain rate is included explicitly into the model formulations so that the proposed model is valid under high strain rate loadings caused by blast-induced vibrations. On account of the increased work required from the assay office, owing to the large additions which have been made to the smelting and superphosphate plants during the last few years, it was found necessary to build a more extensive and up-to-date assay office than the one that had been in use since the starting of the works some twenty years back.A site was chosen adjacent to the main office, so as to be free from smoke and dust.. The building is constructed of red brick, the over-all dimensions being 109 ft. x 37 ft. The roof is of fibrous-cement slates, 31 ft. high, with a two-to-one rise, and overlaps the walls to the extent of 4 ft. 6 in. on all sides.Special care was taken to give light to all working benches, fume cupboards, and balance rooms. The main chemical room occupies the entire western end of the building, and the fire room the entire eastem end. Between these two rooms are the superphosphate, refinery, and gold-parting rooms on one side of the central passage, and three balance rooms, general office, and cloak room on the other side. The height of the roof affords ample space above these central rooms for storage purposes, and also maintains a fairly even temperature. The ceiling of the main chemical and fire rooms is carried immediately under the slates, which gives a total height in the centre of about 25 ft.

Filtration of pulps of varying densities is an essential operation in the hydro-metallurgical production of zinc. The use of filters naturally applies only to the "wet" plants, and in these varying types and sizes are in commission. At Risdon, the Moore suction filter is used for the heavier pulps, except in one instance, where a modification of the Butters-Cassell filter is installed.Filter presses are in general use, and of these, one is a washing unit; the plates, and frames are of cast iron or mild steel, except in one case which is a centre feed press having wooden frames.FILTER DESIGNThe problem of filtration presented itself very early in the history of Risdon and the first developments occurred in what was termed the 250 -lb. plant. Here experiments were made with many types of filters, and as this was the pilot plant on which the design of the 10 ton plant (10 tons of zinc per day) was based, quick decisions were necessary.An Oliver type filter was chosen for the heavier pulp or residue, and a Shriver wooden frame filter press for the lighter pulps.To this day, but with a number of variations, filter presses continue to function unopposed in their particular field; however, the Oliver filter was soon superseded because it was found impossible to wash the filter cake efficiently without repulping; consequently its use was abandoned and the Moore filter adopted.Both- these filters have been modified and developed in many ways to meet the requirements of a zinc plant, but they retain their original basic features.

A brief history of its successive transformations and progresses achieved by its author, Pierre Gy, and his followers, reveals the theoretical as well as practical difficulties that had to be vanquished to reach this point. Its current level of acceptance and corresponding trends are discussed and illustrated, with an insight on its increasing real role in the industry and future prospects for its further development.

THE Company's smelting equipment consists of three blast furnaces, supplied with blast from two sets of vertical piston blowers, each capable of delivering 8000 cub. ft. of air per minute at a pressure of 60 oz. per sq. in. Each blower is belt-driven by a 1:30 h.p. motor. The maximum speed of the blowing engine is 35 r.p.m.No. 1, the largest of the three blast furnaces, has a crucible area of 49.5 sq. ft., and measures 11 ft. 6 in. x 5 ft. at the tuyeres.From tapping floor to feed floor measures 35 ft. 9 in., and holds, when full, 100 tons of charge. Blast enters through thirteen 3-m. tuyeres at 60-oz. pressure. Working normally, this furnace is capable of treating :300 tons of charge, exclusive of returned slag and coke, per 24: hours, with an output of 100 tons of lead. Tapped slag flows into a C.l. forehearth mounted on wheels, where any lead and matte is caught, and the slag overflows into a 3-ton cast-iron pot, in which it is drawn away by an electric locomotive and poured over the dump.

Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.
