The production of petroleum in New York in 1940, totaling 4,999,000 bbl., was only slightly under the amount produced in each of the previous three years. The year 1940 started auspiciously with a posted price on Jan. I of $2.75 a barrel. Four price reductions, beginning in May, resulted in August in a low of $1.85 a barrel, after which two increases brought the year's closing price to $2.15 a barrel. The favorable crude price at the beginning of the year stimulated an increased drilling program, especially in the water-flooding districts. In the Allegany County region, which accounts for about two-thirds of the state's oil production, 886 wells, including water-intake wells, were drilled; 200 more than in the preceding Year. During the closing months of the Year there was a marked decline in the number of wells drilled. The unfavorable position in which the industry found itself before midsummer was due largely to the loss of export markets for its high-grade lubricants, constituting approximately 25 per cent of its business. As a result of this situation, runs to refineries were curtailed as much as 30 Per cent at the middle of the Year. Improvement in market conditions toward the end of the Year found the stocks of available crude at an almost record low. Deep DRILLING with the gradual exhaustion of some of the important natural and flood-oil-produc-ing areas of the Allegany and Bradford pools, overproduction will not be a serious problem in the future. The possibility of finding new territory or deeper producing sands has been further lessened by the drilling of additional deep wells for gas in and about the present oil fields. Many of these wells drilled to the Oriskany sand-stone were over 4000 ft. deep and have tested the entire thickness of the Devonian formation, the upper 2000 ft. of which contain all the important oil-producing strata in the state. Water-flooding It is thus evident that the problem of the New york oil producers is not one of find-ing new supplies but of obtaining as much 6 oil as possible from the old developed fields that during the 60 years of their life have 1 produced I 3o,ooo,ooo bbl. of oil. Although a few floods were in operation before I9I9, when the production of oil by flooding was 1 made legal, the output for that year amounted to only 85I,000 bbl. From 1919 I on there has been an almost constant increase, which during the past four years has averaged well above 5,000,000 bbl. annually. During the last 22 years, which constitutes the period of important flooding operations, 651337,000 bbl. of oil have been produced in the state. Careful estimates indicate that between one-third and one-half of the oil fields are being flooded or are already watered out. Some of the flooded and watered-out areas include territory with unusually thick sands, which were highly productive during the early history of the fields. The basic operating properties of the DorrClone are discussed and certain metallurgical applications which exploit these properties are presented. An effective method of controlling the consistency of the DorrClone underflow is described. THIS paper presents in a general manner some of the applications of the DorrClone (Dutch States Mines cyclone) in the metallurgical and heavy chemical fields. Technical or mathematical analyses of the design factors and of the mechanism whereby the cyclone effects its separation have been capably treated in a series of previous papers.'-' Engineering and operational aspects of a few installations and laboratory tests have been chosen to emphasize the unique classification characteristics of the DorrClone and to illustrate its utility in certain difficult situations. Its use in coal washing and heavy-media operations are not considered. Some 25 or more industrial installations and applications of the DorrClone in the metallurgical fields are operating at present, ranging from single trial units to complete batteries composed of a multiplicity of units. The data were obtained in part from some of these, and in part from operations of units at the Westport Mill, the laboratories and testing plant of the Dorr Co. at Westport, Conn. The DorrClone was developed, in principle, by the research dept. of the State Mines, Limburg, Holland, during World War 11. Its first use was to dewater a —50 micron sand used as a dense medium in coal washing. The metallurgical wet cyclone was first publicized by Driessen and Yancey and Geer.6 ince then the cyclone has been studied as a means of de-watering, heavy media concentration, and fine size classification. The DorrClone is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. pulp to be treated is pumped through the feed nozzle, A, into the feed cylinder, B. The feed nozzle is of rectangular cross-section, the outermost edge being tangent to the feed cylinder walls. Feed shims, C, may be attached to the innermost walls to adjust the open area of the feed nozzle available to entering pulp. The tangential injection of feed under pressure supports the vortex action of the pulp that has been detained in the cyclone; the centrifugal forces of this vortex throw the coarse particles to the walls of the cone, D, where they collect and pass downward and out through the adjustable apex opening, E. The fine particles contained in most of the water that entered with the feed pulp move to the inner spiral of the vortex and flow out through the vortex finder, F, contained in the orifice plate, G, which forms the top of cyclone chamber. The overflow pulp may then spray freely into a spray chamber, H, surmounting the cyclone or pass directly into a 90' elbow, I, of somewhat larger diameter than the vortex finder. Installation Where more than one cyclone is to be installed, best overall efficiency and ease of control are obtained with equal distribution of both pulp volume and weight of solids among the cyclones, and with the same pressure being maintained at each cyclone feed nozzle. Fig. 3 is a suggested arrangement for feeding two or more cyclones in parallel. Feed pressure control: Under normal operating conditions it is not unusual for some surge to exist in the feed that is to be sent to the cyclone. As will be discussed later, surges in the solids content of the pulp are usually not of great operational consequence, but surges in feed volume are a problem. Several systems have been devised for absorbing surges in feed volume, each involving a surge tank. If the surges are small and fairly rhythmical, a tank of sufficient size might be installed to dampen out

The technique of decorating dislocations was employed to investigate deformation and fracture resulting from Precipitation of hydrogen in Fe-3 pet Si single crystals. It is shown that cracks are produced on (100) planes inside crystals, as a consequence of the precipitation of hydrogen gas, either when crystals are quenched from a hydrogen atmosphere at elevated temperatures or cathodically charged with hydrogen at room temperature. Plastic deformation in the vicinity of cracks, observed as arrays of decorated dislocations, is in conformity with the calculated stress distribution about a crack containing an internal pressure, and the observations provide information permitting a detailed analysis of the mechanics of crack growth. The fracture characteristics of crystals containing internal cracks were evaluated at 25o and -196°C and the results are related to the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement in terms of the growth of preexisting cracks. HYDROGEN in bee iron or steel produces two characteristic changes in mechanical properties: I), a decrease in ductility (macroscopic strain at fracture) that depends on temperature and strain rate, and 2), spontaneous fracture under static load that depends on time and apparent stress. Resolution of these phenomena into the microscopic processes that combine to produce the macroscopic effects is especially difficult in the Fe-H system in which the active component cannot be directly observed and only maintained in equilibrium with great difficulty in the temperature and pressure range in which embrittlement phenomena appear. As a result of these complications, verification of the numerous hypotheses'-5 that have been proposed to explain the microscopic mechanism of embrittlement depends on self-consistency with measured changes in macroscopic properties that are averaged over the volume of a specimen. It is obviously important to obtain a more direct evaluation of the microscopic processes that combine to produce embrittlement. Accordingly, the present investigation was designed to identify and observe, as directly as possible, the microscopic effects of introducting hydrogen into a bee crystal. It was concluded from a previous investigation6 of X-ray line broadening, produced by introducing hydrogen into pure iron at room temperature, that the only effect that could be associated with the introduction of hydrogen was plastic deformation; in particular, dilation of the lattice was not observed, within ± 0.01 pet, and no evidence was found that could be interpreted to support the idea7'* that hydrogen occupies tetrahedral interstitial sites in the iron lattice. The absence of lattice dilation is consistent with the extremely small solubility of hydrogen in bee iron9,10 (0.015 at. pet at 900oC and 1 atm pressure), and the evidence of plastic deformation is consistent with the fact that hydrogen, introduced by cathodic charging, eliminates the carbon yield point.11-13 Following this investigation, the immediate problem was to devise a method by which plastic deformation could be observed directly. The technique employed by Hibbard and Dunn14 to observe the movement of dislocations during bending and subsequent polygonization of Fe-3 pet Si single crystals was adopted and modified for the present purpose to include the observation of dislocation arrays in the volume of the crystal, and their association with the fracture process. Two methods for the synthesis and growth of single crystals of B6 P are described: a solution-growth process employing nickel as the solvent, and a vapor-growth process employing BBr3 and pH3 as the reac-tants. Relevant portions of the Ni-B-P phase diagram have been examined and liquidus data are presented for an isobaric section at an equivalent P2 pressure of 3.8 Torr, and an isothertnal section at 1300°C. Solution-growth techniques are described and the purity and crystalline perfection of the resulting material is discussed. Epitaxial growth of BeP on &P substrates has been obtained using the vapor-phase system. Evidence is presented which supports the assignment of the stoichioknetry B6P to boron sub-plwsphide. THE B-P system differs from other III-V systems in that it contains two distinct compounds. The existence of the monophosphide (BP) has been known for some time,' whereas the subphosphide (B6P) was reported only recently.' Both of these compounds are large bandgap semiconductors (Eg = 2.0 ev for BP~ and 3.3 ev for B6P4), and are therefore of interest for optoelectronic applications. The crystal structure of B6P is quite different from those of most semiconductors, being derived from that of a-rhombohedral boron by the incorporation of the two phosphorus atoms in the intericosahedral sites of the a-boron unit cell?76 B6P also exhibits a number of unusual characteristics, including a high degree of chemical inertness, hardness, and high-temperature stability. No information concerning other physical properties is available in the literature. The present study is part of a broader investigation of the preparation and properties of B6P. This paper considers methods of growing single crystals of B6P of suitable size and quality for physical-property measurements. A detailed discussion of the electrical and optical properties of B6P will be given elsewhere.' GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The method first used to synthesize B6P was the disproportionation of BP' according to the reaction The equilibrium P2 pressures corresponding to this reaction were also determined .'" It is therefore possible, in principle, to apply several of the reactions reported for the synthesis of BP to the synthesis of B6P merely by selecting lower phosphorus pressures or higher temperatures, in accordance with the equilibrium data. Other techniques for the direct synthesis of microcry stalline B8P have also been reported.1°

ESTABLISHED methods for obtaining quantitative pole figures for flat sheets1"5 can be extended to apply to thin films on a substrate. The mode of scanning the sample is exactly the same as described in the references? but consideration is given to the fact that the scattered X-ray intensities are due to both the thin film and its substrate with appropriate attenuation factors. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method to obtain the scattered intensities from the film alone for subsequent pole-figure determinations. Fig. 1 shows the four possible general positions of the film (f) and its substrate (s) with respect to the incident X-ray beam (I,). In this paper it will be assumed that the plane of the sample is normal to the plane of the diffractometer. In the diagrams the line jV is the normal to the flat sample and the line P is the trace of the diffracting crystallographic planes in the plane of the diffractometer. The angle of tilt, a, is the positive acute angle measured from the line N to the line P; if this angle is measured clockwise then a is said to be in the positive a region; if this angle is measured counterclockwise then a is said to be in the negative a region. For the reflection cases, the total scattered intensity, at the proper Bragg angle for a particular set of planes, is due to that scattered by the film Vf) and that scattered by the substrate. The one-dimensional displacement equation for a homogeneous porous medium, including the effects of gravity and capillaty forces, has been solved by a numerical method. A finite-difference scheme is developed for obtaining saturation, pressure and fractional flow profiles in waterflood recovety problems. From the numerical examples given, it is concluded that the gravitational forces have a pronounced effect on the saturation profiles and the pressure distribution curves of the system. INTRODUCTION Within the past 20 years, a number of papers have appeared in the literature dealing with the quantitative treatment of waterflood recovery problems. In their celebrated paper, Buckley and Leverett1 described a method for calculating saturation profiles when the effects of capillary pressure and gravity are excluded. Terwilliger, et al,2 included the effect of gravity in their theoretical and experimental investigation of oil recovery problems and obtained close correlation between experiment and theory. welge3 described a simplified method for obtaining the average saturation and the oil recovery from an oil reservoir. The effect of gravity can be included in this calculation. More recently (1958) Douglas, et al,4 presented a method for calculating saturation profiles which includes the effect of capillary pressure. The authors start with the one-dimensional displacement equation (which is nonlinear in the derivative) and, by a change of variable, transform this equation to a semi-linear partial differential equation. This equation is then solved by a finite-difference method on a high-speed digital computer. Fayers and Sheldon5 obtained the solution of the one-dimensional displacement equation by directly replacing the differential equation by a finite-difference equation. The effects of capillary pressure and gravity were in- cluded in their solution. Here, since the movement of the foot of the saturation front is governed by a separate equation, the elapsed time in attaining a particular saturation profile cannot be obtained. The results of these two papers indicate that the inclusion of capillary forces eliminates the triple-valued Buckley-Leverett saturation profiles. In the present paper, the one-dimensional displacement equation for a homogeneous permeable medium, including the effects of capillary and gravity forces, is solved. The method of solution resembles that described in the paper by Douglas, et al, since it involves a similar transformation of variable. However, it extends their work in that the effect of gravity is included and, in addition, pressure profiles may be calculated. Also, the functions of saturation [kro(S), krw(S) and Pc (S) ] required are entered in tabular form rather than as low-order polynomials. This simplifies data preparation and permits the use of a greater range of function types. Unlike the method of Fayers and Sheldon, the corresponding elapsed time required for the development of each saturation profile is calculated and, also, saturation profiles may be calculated after breakthrough. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The dimensionless form of the one-dimensional displacement equation for a homogeneous porous medium as obtained from Darcy's law and material balance relations can be written as follows.

INTERMITTENT injection of gas in gas-lift pumping is a variation of the common practice in that the gas is' .delivered to the well for a short, period, called the "on time," followed by a period during which none is admitted, called the "off time," instead of being admitted continuously at a constant rate or by intermittent flowing in which it is occasionally delivered to the well in just sufficient quantity to flow off the accumulated head of fluid. The term "gas" is used throughout this discussion but it should be remembered that in so far as the operation is concerned either air or natural gas may be used. The equipment at the well is the same as commonly used in gas-lift installations and gas may be admitted to either the tubing or the casing. It seldom occurs that all the wells on a lease can be pumped economically by intermittent injection from one header. Wells that. have flow characteristics which permit their being handled together have their intake lines grouped at a central compressor station. Well groups may consist of two or more wells. The total volume of gas delivered by each group of compressors goes to one well at a time through a quick opening valve, each well connected to the header receiving its charge of gas in turn. Special cases may require a deviation from this arrangement. The distribution of the gas to the different wells is effected by an automatic timing device which operates quick-opening valves on the intake lines. The timing mechanism may be actuated by electricity, liquid or gas pressure. The essential factor in the operation of the timing mechanism is that as one intake valve is closed another must be opened.

IT has long been recognized by blast- furnace men that correct top distribution of materials is very important in efficient and economical furnace operation. Thousands of experiments on top design, filling, sizing, and other operations have been carried out to improving furnace performance by securing uniform distribution. Many of these experiments have worked out satisfactorily and have been passed along to the industry. Many of them have been discarded and forgotten. It has been the custom to judge the results of such experimentation by the results shown in improved or lowered furnace efficiency. While the effect on furnace practice will have to continue to be the final criterion of experimental changes, it has always been a desire of blast-furnace men to ascertain the reason for failure or success. Efficiency in the blast furnace approaching the maximum can be measured in several ways: (I) by actual operating results as revealed in the coke rate and tonnage figures, and (2), in the degree to which the top gas approaches the limiting ratio of CO/C02 for the reduction of iron oxide by CO gas. This ratio is shown in the equilibrium curve in Fig. I for the system Fe-O-C and CO2-CO-C. The closer the top gases approach this limiting ratio (set at 1.08 by Martin1 because of the effect of limestone calcination) the more efficiently we may expect a furnace to operate. The fact that low CO/C02 ratios parallel eficient operating performance caused us to investigate the cause of good or poor distribution and the effect of filling and other changes on furnace operation. Heretofore it has been possible to take a sample of furnace gas (usually from the dust catcher) and from it determine how closely the reducing gases were to the ideal or limiting value as set by the equilibrium diagram. However, to find just where in the top area the distribution was distorted and the top-gas CO/CO2 ratios were distant from equilibrium values has been a difficult and expensive investigational procedure. In an effort to overcome this difficulty, apparatus was designed to take gas samples and temperatures across the top radius of the furnace. It was hoped that with the aid of this apparatus traverse sampling of the ascending gases could be simplified, and the cost of sampling substantially lowered. Routine experimenting could then be maintained and results checked with furnace operation. It must be emphasized that a traverse sampling is necessary for a true picture, as single samples at any one point are unreliable. This statement can be verified by an examination of Tables 3 to 6, showing results obtained at our furnaces in a large number of tests. APPARATUS The design of the equipment for taking the samples was governed by the need for providing a simple, routine test that could be performed fairly quickly without adversely affecting normal furnace operation.

INTRODUCTION THIS paper aims to present the results of an investigation concerning gravitative differentiation in lava flows, based on a quantitative microscopic and chemical study of a Triassic basalt from Nova Scotia, and confirmed by data secured from a study of certain Keweenawan ophites. At Cape d'Or, Nova Scotia, near the head of the Bay of Fundy, marine erosion has exposed a series of Triassic basalt flows in which copper has been sought for a number of years. Studies of the thickest flow of the series with regard to volumetric composition, specific gravity, and grain have been made by the junior author, and measurements by students at Tufts College, together with confirmatory observations of the same nature on this and other flows by the senior writer, and chemical analyses made by the Division of Mines, Mines Branch, Ottawa,1 all show differentiation in lava flows comparable to that in intrusive bodies. The work was made possible by the availability of the drill-cores, the property of Tufts College, and emphasizes the desirability of the study of drill-cores from other localities. Measurements of the specific gravities of certain Keweenawan lava flows of -Michigan by the senior author, from material collected in 1915, will be given as a comparison to those of the Cape d'Or flow. It has been found that the specific gravity of drill-cores, or volume per cubic foot, can be readily obtained by measuring their dimensions. This can be done to an accuracy of within 1 per cent. in pieces of core over 100 min. in length by using a micrometer gage for the diameter, and taking the average of six measurements of the diameter; and the average of four measurements of the length made with a finely graduated ruler. Then, after weighing them, the weight in grains per cubic centimeter, or what is practically the same thing, ounces per cubic foot, is obtained. System-

Pegmatites occur in abundance in certain areas of South West Africa and in adjacent parts of northern Cape Province in the Union of South Africa. Some of the pegmatite deposits were prospected before World War I, and intermittent mining was done during the period between the two World Wars. The deposits of the Jooste lithium mines became an important source of lepidolite, and beryl, columbite-tantalite, wolframite, and other minerals were produced. Since World War I1 prospecting and mining have been carried on vigorously, with the result that South West Africa produced nearly 3000 tons of beryl during 1949 through 1953, together with more than 40,000 tons of lithium minerals, chiefly lepidolite and petalite. Small amounts of tantalite, columbite, and other minerals have also been produced during the postwar period. Most of this mineral production has come from two pegmatite areas roughly outlined in Fig. 1. One is the Karibib-Omaruru area of north central South West Africa. The second is the northeastern part of the Orange River pegmatite area, which extends into adjacent parts of Namaqualand, in northern Cape Province of the Union of South Africa

DENSE-MEDIA processes utilize the familiar laboratory float-and- sink procedure on a commercial scale. Just as wood chips float on water and sand sinks, ,so coal floats and refuse sinks when placed in a medium intermediate in specific gravity between the coal and refuse. Liquids intermediate in specific gravity between coal and refuse used in commercial plants are of four types: (1) Organic liquids of high specific gravity-halogenated hydrocarbons; (2) dissolved, salts in water; (3) pseudo liquids obtained by suspending solids, such as sand, in water, and (4) fluidizing a mass of sand or other solids by air currents. Those most widely used for cleaning coal are solutions of calcium chloride in water and a suspended-sand pseudo liquid. Laboratory float-and-sink testing is an intermittent operation during which every opportunity is given for particles lighter than the medium to float and particles heavier to sink. Commercial processes are continuous, vertical and horizontal currents of the separating medium occur as either part of the process or unavoidably produced by the introduction of feed and withdrawal of products, so that the exact separation of the laboratory technique is not duplicated by commercial processes. However, separations close to the theoretical are obtained in commercial machines by careful technical control of the process. Most machines in commercial installations are crowded to get as much out of the equipment as possible, so that careful technical control is necessary to get the recoveries and grade of product desired. Sizes usually cleaned are plus 3/16-in. or plus 1/8-in. in the United States and plus 1/16-in. in Great Britain: Coal as small as 1 mm. has been cleaned in some experimental installations. The separation of coal from refuse in sizes finer than about in. is made difficult by viscosity' effects and hence at the present time cleaning is confined to the coarser sizes. AN electronic data-processing system is described which permits rapid, accurate, low-cost processing of strain-dependent damping data utilizing equipment normally available within the service facilities of most large laboratories. On analyzing the record of a stress-dependent damping test, the operator usually measures the double amplitudes at several points on the decay curve. The logarithmic decrement is then calculated for decay between consecutive amplitudes. These values of 6 are plotted against the corresponding maximum surface shear stress, T, which is proportional to the average of the two amplitudes between which is calculated: where d is the specimen diameter. The period of the vibration is not necessarily constant during decay; thus, each cycle must be counted. A decay curve may extend to, perhaps, 1000 cycles, and at least two curves are always obtained for each specimen or set of conditions. It can, therefore, be seen that manual analysis of decay curves is both tedious and costly in terms of man-hours. [ ] ST. JOSEPH Lead Co., is entering the oil business. Andrew Fletcher, St. Joseph president, stated that plans call for a contract with the Continental Oil Co., to drill 11 exploratory wells. Six will be in Texas, one in southern Louisiana, one in northern Louisiana, and one each in California, Oklahoma, and Montana. St. Joseph is also negotiating a contract with the Zephyr Drilling Co., for wells in Wyoming and Colorado. St. Joseph is planning to drill another well on a 6000 acre plot in southern Illinois. Proxies issued before a special meeting of the board, said the new venture is not intended to change the general character of the company's business, or to involve a significant part of its resources. If gas, oil, or minerals are discovered in paying quantities, the company will develop and operate the deposits and dispose of the products for the joint account of Continental Oil and St. Joseph Lead. The mining company will contribute a proportionate share of the cost, but will have definite limitation of its obligation. The amendment to St. Joseph's certificate of corporation, passed by the board meeting, also extended the power of the company to include mining operations of all kinds.

The main results from a programme of theoretical work on various aspects of the pelletizing operation are presented. This paper is primarily concerned with the modelling of: (i) The balling drum operation. A model is outlined which clearly demonstrates the characteristic surging behaviour of the balling circuit. It is used first in a control analysis and, subsequently, in the design and testing of various control schemes. (ii)The grate-kiln-cooler induration process. Models describing each of the constituent processes are outlined and a composite model of the whole induration process presented. The main results from each of these models are discussed.

THE early methods of mining anthracite in the steep pitching Mammoth bed consisted in driving breasts up the pitch from the gangways and airways driven in the bed along the strike (Plate 2, Fig. 1). Breasts are simply rooms driven up the pitch the full thickness of the bed (Plate 2, Fig. 2), having a width of from 18 to 30 ft., and a manway or traveling way on one or both sides. (For detail of breast method see Whildin, Trans., vol. 50, p. 704). Many difficulties were encountered, and the maintenance cost of the timbered gangways was so great as to be practically prohibitive. To reduce this .expense, the gangways were driven in the thin Skidmore bed underlying the Mammoth, and the coal mined through rock holes. (Plate 2, Fig. 2;-A.) It was found that after the breasts were driven up 80 to 100 ft., the coal almost invariably rushed or "ran away," making good ventilation almost impossible and the extraction of coal from the upper portion of the lift very difficult. The economic length of a lift is from 200 to 250 ft., and the percentage of extraction by the old method above mentioned was often under 50 per cent., while the coal recovered was so badly broken up as to reduce materially the percentage of large sizes.

Scaled laboratory-model studies provide a powerful method for evaluation of a proposed oil-recovery process. In recent years, models have been used extensively to evaluate processes in which solvents displace oil, both for general cases and for specific reservoir conditions. Since the performance of a miscible flood in a horizontal reservoir can be significantly affected by transverse mixing between solvent and oil, this displacement mechanism must be accurately simulated in the scaled model studies. Unfortunately, precise scaling of transverse dispersion coupled with the requirement of geometric similarity requires impractically large laboratory models and long times for experiments. If scaling requirements for miscible displacements could be relaxed while accurate simulation of essential displacement mechanisms is maintained, the utility of model studies would be greatly enhanced. The purpose of the work reported herein was to evaluate the relative importance of various mechanisms affecting miscible displacement and to ascer tain whether the essential features of the displacement process can be simulated even though some scaling groups are not satisfied. These studies were performed with completely miscible systems in linear, horizontal models packed with unconsolidated media. From the experimental results, a set of relaxed scaling criteria was formulated which allows the requirements of geometric similarity and equality of the ratio of viscous to gravity forces to be omitted for specified conditions. The relaxed criteria are valid whether transverse mixing is by molecular diffusion or by convective dispersion. Correlations which permit prediction of vertical sweep efficiencies in linear, horizontal reservoirs were developed from the experimental data when transverse mixing is by molecular diffusion. These same correlations may be used when transverse mixing is by convective dispersion if an empirically defined, effective, transverse dispersion coefficient is used in the description of the mixing process. The effective transverse dispersion coefficient correlation essentially duplicates the dispersion coefficient correlation for equal-viscosity, equal-density fluid systems. Experimental values for the effective transverse dispersion coefficient can be measured readily. Their experimental data indicate, for the cases studied, that the displacement is sufficiently characterized by scaling the ratio of viscous-to-gravitational forces. This work suggests that relaxation of the requirement of geometric similarity and, possibly, other criteria might also be permissible when mixing is important, provided suitable groups describing the mixing process are scaled. STUDIES of surface relief and growth kinetics have lead to the concept that widmanstatten ferrite along with upper and lower bainite constitute a continuous series of decomposition products.1-4 Current models4 propose that these products form as plates with a coherent or semicoherent leading edge which propagates at a rate controlled by diffusion of carbon into the surrounding austenite. There are, however, important crystallographic and morphological differences between these products—particularly between upper and lower bainite. For example, upper bainite appears to exhibit a (11lIy orientation habit, whereas lower bainite develops with a more irrational habit near {2251y.5-7 Many of the morphological features of these decomposition products are not yet well-documented. Recent studiess have demonstrated that low-carbon martensites form as sheets of closely spaced needles on {lllly planes while higher-carbon martensites form as plates with {225}? or other orientation habits. The similarity in the crystallography of these two modifications of martensite with upper and lower bainite is striking. Therefore, a study of the morphology of bainite in a series of hypoeutec-toid alloy steels has been initiated to explore these relationships further. The question of immediate interest is whether upper and lower bainite form as plates or needles. A two-surface (approximately perpendicular) metallographic method was employed to study the morphology of bainite in a variety of low and medium alloy steels. Compositions of these steels have been reported elewhere. The behavior of 4340 and 4370 was typical and will be described here. Austenitizing treatments involved 20 min at 2350°F for 4340 and at 2000°F for 4370. Isothermal transformation was conducted in molten-salt baths. Upper bainite was produced at 925°F in the 4340 steel and lower bainite at 575°F in 4370 with transformation times adjusted to produce 10 to 15 pct of the decomposition product. Many of the morphological features of upper bainite have been catalogued in the recent literature.'' The two principal variants observed in the present investigation are illustrated in Fig. l(a). One form appears as long, thin plates or needles and the other as small, frequently irregularly shaped particles. Both variants may occur as isolated forms but more frequently appear in groups as demonstrated in Fig. l(a). Two-surface analysis reveals that these two variants constitute different sections through a single morphological form. To demonstrate this, a number of sections perpendicular to the plane of Fig. l(a) were prepared at various positions along the length of the elongated particles. A section taken at position 1 in Fig. l(a) is presented in Fig. l(b). Here, the dark line represents the edge of the sample and the left-hand portion of this photomicrograph is that from the surface perpendicular to the original plane of polish. Since it was necessary to repolish the original surface after each sectioning, the shape of the bainite particles on this surface, right hand side of Fig. l(b), changes with each sectioning. The disappearance of plate A, Fig. l(a), in Fig. l(b) emphasizes the small cross section of these structures. The group of particles in the lower left-hand

THE basic problem in the generation of water gas from carbonaceous fuels and steam is the supply of the heat of reaction, and in general the source of this heat is the combustion of a further quantity of carbon with oxygen. Existing and proposed processes for complete gasification differ in the methods employed for transferring this heat to the fuel, and involve one or other of the following alternatives: 1. Use of a steam-oxygen mixture as the gasifying medium, so that the combustion and gasification reactions are combined. 2. Alternate passage of air and steam through a fixed bed, as in conventional water-gas production. 3. Cyclic passage of fluidized fuel through combustion and gasification zones. 4. Intense preheating of steam and of a portion of the gas made, and recirculation of this mixture through the fuel bed. 5. Supply of heat to the fuel bed through an externally heated wall. Except for the conventional water-gas process using large coke or low- volatile coal, only processes in the first group, operating with steam and oxygen, have proved practicable with fuels other than brown coals and lignites. A possible exception, which has not so far reached a commercial scale, is the moving-burden process developed by Imperial Chemical Indus- tries, Ltd. The cost of industrial oxygen is so high that its use can probably be justified only if it is attended by substantial savings in other directions; for instance, the use of cheap fuel. In the United Kingdom, no very cheap solid fuels are available, and it is unlikely that an oxygen-gasification process could compete economically with conventional production of blue water gas from coke. Hence particular interest attaches to all possibilities of making water gas without using oxygen, if any possible saving in fuel or other costs is involved. The cheapest and most abundant coals in the United Kingdom are the low-rank noncaking bituminous coals in small and ungraded sizes, typically those from the East Midlands coal field, and-fines of high ash content produced in coal-cleaning operations.
