After eight years of testing and development, the E. J. Longyear Co. has adapted the wire- line core barrel to small diameter drillholes. Field performance indicates that the apparatus for the BX hole will be an important supplement to the conventional techniques used in the diamond core drilling industry. Higher core recovery, faster drilling progress, and reduced diamond costs will provide substantial savings to the user of coring equipment. The wire-line principle is not new, having been successfully applied to the large-diameter holes of the petroleum industry. But scaling the practices of core recovery in oil well drilling down to the small BX hole presented a number of problems. The technique, difficult even for large holes, was complicated by the exacting limitations of the small diameter in which durable and foolproof mechanisms would be required to operate. Since the maximum benefits could be realized from this sys- tem in holes 1000 ft and deeper or in holes in badly fractured ground, the drill string would have to be able to withstand heavy stresses. Most vital to the success of the idea was the development of a positive latching mechanism to assure proper positioning of the inner tube of the core barrel when the tube is dropped into place. Lastly, little was to be gained from the wire-line method without diamond bits that would give optimum penetration rates and a long service life in the drillhole.

Cast-steel runners, while not interesting from a commercial standpoint, furnish valuable material for microscopic study. Folcyl found not only the usual ingot structure, but zones of Widmannstättian structure, which he explains as due to differential crystallization. The writer, in examining nickel-steel runners, found a type of pro-eutectoid ferrite that is unusual and most probably new. The runner in question was 8.75 cm. (3.5 in.) in diameter and analyzed at its center 2.69 per cent. nickel and 0.350 per cent. carbe a and at its edge 2.62 per cent. nickel and 0.359 per cent. carbon. Th macrostruc-ture, which is the usual type, is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which are a cross-section and the longitudinal surface, respectively. Slight segregat'ion of ferrite can be seen near the center of the segment and at other points near the edges of polyhedral grains. Stead's reagent brings out the dendritic structure within the grains as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. This texture is what would be expected of such a steel. Figs. 5 to 10 show the peculiar swirls of pro-eutectoid ferrite, the finding of which prompted this paper. These swirls, or eddies, if such a term can be applied, occur in all parts of the runner and in all parts of the individual grains. The upper left-hand figure shows this ferrite at a grain boundary; the middle left-hand figure shows the inner portion of a grain; and the lower left-hand figure shows these swirls at the edge of a grain which is also the outer edge of the runner. Straight-lined ferrite associated with swirls is found in the areas of Figs. 11 and 12. The texture of the carbon-bearing constituent of the runner is shown to some extent in Fig. 12, the pearlite being very fine or sorbitic. Higher magnification does not bring out any new features either in the peculiar ferrite or in the pearlite. Figs. 13 and 14, at 240 diameters, show the curved and straight-lined ferrite.

A geometric model of interstitial solid solutions, which has been used previously as a basis for the prediction of carbon activities in Fe-C austenite, is shown to serve also for the calculation of nitrogen activities in Fe-N austenite. The model has been developed to enable predictions to be made of the activities of an interstitial element in the presence of two host atom species. The activities calculated via the model are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with the measured values in the austenite phase for carbon in Fe-C-Co, Fe-C-Cr, Fe-C-Ni, Fe-C-~n, Fe-C-Si, and Fe-C-V alloys and for nitrogen in Fe-N-Ni alloys. The effect of the second substitu-tional solute on the logarithm of the activity of the interstitial element is expressed as the product of a constant mad the atomic concentration of that solute. The constants so derived we related to the thermo-dynamic interaction coefficients which describe the effect on the activity coefficient of carbon of an added solute element. In recent years the thermodynamic activities of carbon and nitrogen in the single-phase austenite field have been determined for iron binary alloys and for several iron-base ternary alloys. In order to extend the use of these measurements, it is desirable to be able to predict with reasonable accuracy the activities of the interstitials at compositions and temperatures other than those which have been measured experimentally. In all the systems studied to date, the interstitial elements do not conform to ideal behavior. Hence, the available data cannot be extrapolated or interpolated using the simple thermodynamic concepts of solutions. Several models have, therefore, been formulated for the purpose of predicting the activity of an interstitial element in the presence of one species of host atom. These models can be divided into the geometric1"5 and energetic6-' types. The former group is based on the assumption that at low concentrations the activity of the interstitial species is determined by a composition-dependent configurational entropy term and an excess free-energy term which is temperature-dependent but independent of composition. The purpose of this paper is to show that the treatment, based on a geometric model, can be extended to enable predictions to be made of interstitial activities in the presence of two substitutional host atom species. THE CONFIGURATIONAL ENTROPY OF MIXING ICaufman5 has shown that the configurational entropy, S,, for a binary solution comprising of a host atom species, A, and an interstitial species, I, can be expressed as: where NI is the atom fraction of the interstitial species, R is the gas constant, and (2 - 1) is the number of interstitial sites excluded from occupancy by the strain field around each added interstitial atom. The number of interstitial sites per host atom, p, is unityg for the fcc austenite solutions considered here. The configurational entropy of mixing for a ternary solution comprising two substitutional atom species, A and B, and one interstitial species, I, can be derived similarly. Let the number of atoms per mole of each of these species in the solution be represented by «a, ng, and nI. From geometric considerations, it is improbable that the addition of a few atom percent of a second host atom species will change the type of sites (i.e., octahedral) in which the interstitial atom can be accommodated in the austenite lattice. At higher concentrations (determined largely by the relative atomic radii of the atomic species present and any tendency to nonrandom occupancy of the host lattice sites) other types of interstitial sites may become energetically favorable. Restricting consideration to compositions below this limit, for 1 = 1 the number of suitable interstitial sites is given by (n + nB). However, if each interstitial atom excludes from occupancy (Z - 1) additional sites, the total number of sites available for occupation is reduced to (n + ng)/Z. The number of vacant interstitial sites is given by: The total number of recognizable permutations of the atoms must include the recognizable, different configurations of the A and B atoms on the host lattice. Discussion of the paper of. C. L. DAKE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1429 to 1436. A. C. LAWSON, Berkeley, Cal.-It appears that our bog-iron ores are due in a large measure to the activity of certain iron bacteria, and a paper dealing with this subject that makes no reference to that particular agency strikes me as rather curious. C. L. DANE, Rolla, Mo.-Mr. Lawson's criticism that this paper makes no reference to the activity, of iron bacteria is scarcely true. On p. 1430 I stated: "Certain bacteria precipitate iron by building the hydrated oxide into their body cells," and again, "There are many other means by which, under special conditions, iron may be precipitated in nature. Oxidation, evaporation of CO2, and iron bacteria have been held to be the most important." Thus the activity of bacteria receives as extended mention as the action of any other agency in precipitation of iron. The paper makes no pretense of covering exhaustively the origin of bog ores, but, as its original title suggested, refers to Some Principles Controlling the Formation and Distribution of Bog Iron Ores. Mr. Lawson seems to have entirely missed the main thesis of the paper, which attempts to establish some relation between glaciation and abundance of bog ores now forming. Unfortunately, I have no immediate access to the literature of the subject, but my best recollection is that the data regarding iron bacteria throw no light whatever on the cause of bog ores being so much in ore abundant within the limits of the glaciated regions, and being reported much less frequently from the tropics. This lack of data is suggested in the following (p. 1434): "It has already been shown that bacteria aid in the precipitation of iron. Whether tropical conditions increase or decrease the activity of such bacteria is unknown."

A study is made of the amount of solution loss necessary to maintain the reducing power of the gas stream in the blast furnace. Curves are presented to show the effect of solution loss, moisture in the blast, and carbon dioxide from the flux on the nitrogen in the THE blast furnace process is based upon the counter flow of gases and solids. As CO, N, and H, flow upward from the combustion zones, oxygen is acquired from the descending charge. In the reduction of iron ore, a portion of CO is converted to CO, and similarly a portion of H, is converted to water vapor. The inert N,, from the air used in combustion, passes through the furnace with little change. Its concentration is, however, decreased by reactions such as direct reduction and solution loss which increase the volume of CO in the gas stream; Similarly the evolution of C02 from the limestone also dilutes the nitrogen. he purpose of this paper is to illustrate an idealized and simplified method of studying furnace processes by following changes in the gas phase between the tuyeres and the stock line. A more specific objective is to evaluate the effect of solution loss upon the CO/CO, ratio in that region of the furnace in which FeO is reduced to metallic iron. This last stage of reduction requires relatively high CO/CO, ratios to exceed the equilibrium requirements. Solution loss or the reaction of COZ with C to produce CO has a pronounced effect upon the ratio of the carbon gases and is necessary to maintain the reducing power of the gas stream if the consumption of coke is low. It will be explained later that indirect reduction followed by solution loss is stoichiometri-cally equivalent to direct reduction. Calculations will be made to show how the composition of the gas in the region of the mantle varies with coke consumption and with different amounts of solution loss. Such calculations show the condi- tions under which gasification of C with oxygen in the charge is needed to maintain the reducing power of the gas. Equilibrium conditions for FeO and the carbon gases will be used to establish a minimum CO/CO, ratio below which reduction will not proceed. The manner in which carbon is gasified in the furnace, at the tuyeres with oxygen in the air or above the tuyeres with oxygen from the charge, will be a basic feature of all calculations. It is hoped that greater interest in the use of top gas as a means of following furnace reactions will be aroused by the calculations and generalized curves which are presented. Bosh Gas Equations Subject to some alteration by the amount of moisture in the blast and by direct reduction, the gas leaving the combustion zones of a blast furnace has a definite composition. Because a relatively small amount of oxygen is acquired from the charge in the bosh and in the crucible, the products of combustion undergo little change until they enter the shaft. Bosh gas is, therefore, essentially the products of combustion of carbon in a deep fuel bed with air. There was optimism on 14th Street on April 22, Earth Day. We only have the report second hand because the demonstration conflicted with another appointment. Fifth Avenue was closed to vehicular traffic from 14th Street to the Park for a few hours and the crowd that showed up to promenade rivaled anything that can be imagined, even one at a country fair in Merry Old England. Certainly the domestic animals were there and the costumes were wild-as they are almost any day on 5th Avenue. However, the mood was friendly, happy and optimistic according to one of our neighbors who filmed and taped interviews with some of the characters. People think the air is going to be clean, and the water pure in the future. Land is going to be treated with respect. Even if the demonstration temporarily fouled the streets with litter, it served the purpose of dramatizing awareness. In talking to our friend about his experiences we didn't miss the opportunity to sound out his impression of whether or not people recognize that no group of people nor industry has a monopoly on pollution.

Geochemistry in all its branches is playing G an increasingly important part in the business of mine finding. Although geochemical studies were commenced more than 50 years ago, interest in this subject did not become widespread until the late 1930's when in Scandinavia and the U.S.S.R. a whole series of investigations were initiated. Unfortunately for those in North America, the results of these investigations have only recently become available. In Canada and the U.S. geochemistry as a serious mine finding tool dates back only to the period following World War II. This article deals primarily with soils, which have found widespread acceptance as a useful tool in geochemical prospecting. Actually soils vary greatly in texture, structure, profile, and mineral background. Soil sampling poses no hardship for normal intellects, but it does assume an elementary knowledge of soil science and of the chemical problems involved in determining the absolute and relative amounts of a particular element in any particular soil.

In recent years there has been an increase of interest in the flow of gases at relatively high pressures. Hydrodynamic calculation of the energy losses in the flow of gases in conduits, as well as through the porous solid materials constituting natural petroleum reservoirs, requires a knowledge of the viscosity of the fluid at the pressure and temperature involved. Although there are numerous publications concerning the absolute viscosity † of hydrocarbon gases at atmospheric pressure, there appears to be little information available relating to the effect of pressure upon the viscosity of these gases. Voge133 determined the viscosity of methane at 32° F. and atmospheric pressure. His measurements at 32° F. were later substantiated by the measurements of Rankine and Smith20 at 63° and 212° F. Ishida14 also reported values for the viscosity of methane at atmospheric pressure. Trautz and Kurz30 measured the viscosity of propane at atmospheric pressure, from 83° to 530°F., by the use of a short capillary tube. Rap-penecker2' determined the viscosity of gaseous isopentane at elevated temperatures. Day6 made an accurate investigation of the effect of pressure upon the viscosity of n-pentane and isopentane at pressures from 2 lb. per sq. in.‡ to the vapor pressure at 77° F. (approximately 9.8 and 13.3 lb. per sq. in., respectively). Earhart7 reported data upon the viscosity of several natural gases measured by the long capillary-tube method. The viscosity of air, at atmospheric pressure and 73.4° F., was measured by Harrington9 by the rotating-cylinder method. Kellstrom15 has rec,ently made an elaborate investigation of the viscosity of air at atmospheric pressure. The latter work is perhaps the most accurate investigation of the viscosity of a gas that has been made.

The mining and metallurgical laboratory, as we understand the term in this country, is a place .in which mechanical and chemical working-tests are made on ores, fuels and furnacematerials. It is of quite recent origin. The first laboratory of this kind to be used in connection with teaching was put into operation in 1871 at the Massachusetts Institute of Techilo1ogy. † The idea had already existed in the mind of President W. B. Rogers when he wrote, in 1864, his pamphlet 'on " The Scope and Plan of the School of Industrial Science of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology;" but several years elapsed, and an extended visit to the mines and mills of Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California was required before this idea could take a form adapted to the purposes of original research as well as of instruction. The laboratory was given from the first into the charge of Prof. R. H. Richards, who, by improving its methods and enlarging its scope, has brought it to the position which it occupies to-day as the leading representative of its class. IT has been reported that both berylliumL and zirconium&apos; developed the same basic textures during rolling at temperatures up to 1475 °F as at room temperature, differing only by an increase in the spread of basal planes toward the transverse direction as the temperature of deformation was increased. Iodide titanium&apos;&apos; rolled at 1050°F has a texture similar to the cold-rolled texture, {000l}, 25° to 30" from the rolling plane toward the transverse direction, <1010>, Rolling iodide titanium at 1450°F produced a more random condition with the basal planes parallel to the rolling plane and no direction strongly aligned with the rolling direction.

As originally built, the plant of the American Zinc and Chemical Co. at Langeloth, Pennsylvania, was based upon the Joplin and Wisconsin fields as primary sources of zinc ores, the ores being the then normal jig and table concentrates. Construction incorporated standard Matthies-sen and Hegeler kilns without regenerators. With the development of differential flotation, zinc concentrates produced by that process became the basis of operation. These concentrates were very fine, upwards of 90 per cent passing a 300-mesh screen, and had a comparatively low fusing point with marked caking and crusting characteristics. Difficulties and losses quickly developed. In roasting, the ore went through a decidedly fluid state, and spills became serious. Caking and crusting on hearths was severe and dust losses throughout became intolerable. Acid recoveries dropped from the normal ton-for-ton level to 0.85 tons per ton of ore, and choking of Glover towers and acid lines became a problem. In 1926 and 1927 a two-unit sintering plant was built and placed in operation in accordance with the Baelen process for finishing desulphuri-zation with admixture of carbon. This had its beneficial effect in smelting, but the other problems remained. The problem presented was the roasting of Pecos flotation concentrates at the rate of 200 tons daily to a sulphur content suitable for finishing in the sintering plant. Specifications had to be governed by the existing acid plant of four chamber sets built in units of two, rather widely separated, and the sintering plant built in the space between the existing pairs of kilns, of which there was one on the center line of each of the four chamber sets. The problem contained elements of pioneering and experimentation. A thermal analysis and heat balance clearly demonstrated a possibility of accomplishing autogenous roasting, well worth the attempt, because of high fuel costs and resultant economies in operation of the acid plant due to decreased gas volumes and a consequent release of capacity for increasing acid production, a problem also faced.

The paper deals with pressure gradients occurring in flowing and gas-lift wells, a knowledge of which can be applied to the determination of optimum flow-string dimensions and to the design of gas-lift installations. The study is based on a pressure-balance equation for the pressure gradient. It appears that a pressure-gradient correlation of general validity must essentially consist of two parts-—one part being a correlation for liquid hold-up and the other part being one for wall friction. Dimensional analysis indicates that both liquid hold-up and wall friction are related to nine dimensionless groups. It is shown that in the field of interest only four groups are really important. On the basis of these four groups a restricted experimental program could be selected that nevertheless covered practically all conditions encountered in oil wells. This experimental program has been carried out in a laboratory installation. Three essentially different flow regimes were found. The pressure gradients in these regious are presented in the form of a set of correlations. Comparison of these correlations with a few available oilfield data showed excellent agreement. INTRODUCTION Prediction of the pressure drop in the flow string of a well is a widely known problem in oilfield practice. Accurate data on the pressure gradient of a simultaneous flow of gas and liquid in a vertical pipe are especially useful for the determination of optimum flow-string dimensions. It is well known that with moderate gas and liquid flows such a vertical string acts as a "negative restriction". The pressure drop decreases (1) when the throughput through a given pipe increases, and (2) when at a given throughput the cross-sectional area is decreased. The reason is that, with increasing velocities, the flow becomes more agitated so that the gas slips relatively more slowly through the liquid. With the resulting increase in gas content in the string, the static head decreases. When the area becomes very small, however, the high velocities entail great wall friction, which causes an increase in pressure drop. For a given flow, therefore, minimal pressure drop is obtained by using a certain cross section. This means that, in principle, each well can be provided with an optimum flow string for minimum pressure drop and, hence, maximum possible production rate. The procedure for the selection of the optimum string has been discussed by Gilbert.&apos; A necessary tool in the procedure, however, is accurate knowledge of the pressure gradient to be expected for various values of the governing variables. Another application of pressure-gradient data lies in the field of gas-lift practice: they provide a means of determining the optimum gas-injection rate, optimum injection pressure and optimum injection depth. Much work has already been done in the study of the pressure gradient of vertical gas-liquid flow. Poett-mann and Carpenter2 presented a pressure-gradient correlation based on measurements in wells. This correlation has been found to provide accurate predictions in high-pressure wells and in high-production wells for flow through both tubing and annuli.2-5 However, when their method is checked on low pressure-low production wells or on wells with viscous crudes, serious discrepancies are found. As we shall see in the next section, this is due to the fact that their correlation factor, representing all irreversible energy losses, is given as a function of only one correlation group. Some important variables, such as gas-liquid ratio and liquid viscosity, are not incorporated in this group so that their specific effects are not accounted for. To study also the mechanism of vertical gas-liquid flow outside the ranges covered by the Poettmann-Carpenter publication and extensions, a laboratory investigation has been carried out. This study is founded on a pressure-gradient equation that is based on a pressure balance. To reduce the number of test runs required, a dimensional analysis has been carried out, followed by a selection of relevant dimensionless groups. These groups guided a subsequent experimental study, and with their aid the experimental program could be minimized while still covering the majority of the situations encountered in oilfield practice. In this paper the choice of a formula for the pressure gradient is discussed first. This is followed by a brief description of the experimental setup. Subsequently, the dimensional analysis is discussed and the relevant dimensionless groups are selected, resulting in the experimental program required. The general relationships of pressure gradient and liquid hold-up are then described; various flow patterns and a certain flow instability (so-called "heading") are discussed and a set of correlations is presented which shows a good agreement with the measurements and a few available field

Trends will continue towards more automated, and sometimes larger mining and haulage equipment to reduce pit development and haulage costs. To save labour costs, larger capitalization of open pits is required and pit design and stripping ratios have to be firmed up at a very early stage of mine planning. Bench failures will assume a greater importance with larger equipment and at present we have only a limited capability of predicting stable slopes in complex structural geological settings. Deep open pits will pose particular problems in regard to high toe and floor stresses. This will require the development of more efficient systems for rock mass exploration and an improvement of our predictive capability in regard to pit slope stability and appropriate management of ground- water and materials. To meet the challenge, we have to improve: a) Analytical tools to assess slope stability in structurally complex settings as found in large open pits; b) Core orientation methods during diamond drilling operations; c) Geophysical logging methods to obtain geotechnical and structural geological information for large volumes of rock; and d) Geotechnical data handling systems to define mechanical properties

The three gas-producing "pools" discussed in this paper are in Sweet-water County, southwest Wyoming, and Moffat, County, northwest Colorado. Hiawatha, North Baxter Basin and South Baxter Basin gas fields became economically important in 1929 when a 330-mile gas line connected them with Salt Lake City, Ogden and towns en route. This development immediately focussed attention on the gas-producing fields and the efforts of the producing company to develop them in an orderly, economical manner. IT. has long been known that coal is unstable and oxidizes in air, even at ordinary atmospheric temperatures; also, that such oxidation affects the analysis of coal. Nevertheless little or no precaution is taken to prevent oxidation in the ordinary methods of analysis, and the possibility of error due to oxidation is sometimes ignored even in researches on coal. Although the general nature of coal oxidation is well known, and many workers have made careful studies of the rate of oxidation of different types of coal exposed to oxygen at different temperatures, yet the amount of oxidation coals undergo in the ordinary process of analysis, and its influence on the determined analysis, is not well known, and the published data are widely scattered through the literature. This paper is a collec-tion, from this laboratory, of data that bear on the subject, together with a brief summary of three methods employed here to evaluate the oxidizabil-ity of coal. The post-Carboniferous coals of Alberta range all the way from anthracite down to lignite. As some of them are notably susceptible to oxidation, the necessity for care was early forced upon our attention, and oxidation has been reduced either by the removal of air with a vacuum pump or by the displacement of air with natural gas (methane). The two routine analytical operations most liable to involve oxidation are the preliminary, partial drying of the crushed coal (called air-drying) and the determination of moisture. The first is a prolonged operation on coarse coal at ordinary temperatures, and the second a short treatment on powdered coal at higher temperatures. Oxidation also occurs in coal samples stored in ordinary sample bottles. In order to gain information for this study, determinations were recently carried out on the same samples in air, in natural gas, and in vacuo. Sixteen coals were tested; three would be classed in the United States as coking bituminous coals, two as noncoking, nonslacking, bituminous coals, and the rest as subbituminous. Table 1 gives typical analyses of these coals as mined.

The paper presents background information, a description of mine characteristics that affect air monitoring techniques, and a review of Portable measurement techniques and instruments for gas and particulate matter sampling. A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the experimental mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the mine air monitoring lab (MAML), portable instruments, and the production mines used.
