At low sodium-oleate concentration, calcite flotation is substantially improved by the use of CO2 instead of air. Electrophoretic mobility measurements indicate that carbonation results in the accumulation o f positive charge on the calcite particles. This heightens adsorption of oleate anion, an effect confirmed by tracer-technique measurements. Fundamental insight is obtained as to how CO2 serves better as an activator than some mineral and organic acids, how oxalic acid acts as a depressor, and why the influence of Ca++ ions, liberated during carbonation, on flotation behavior of calcite is insignificant and sometimes adverse.

The Blind River mining camp in Canada is all set to stage a major revolution. Enthusiasts on the scene say it will bring large-scale mining to North American uranium operation. If orebodies already discovered live up to their promise, it will be anything but the usual business of a few men handpicking orebearing rock out of small mines. Because of the geological structure of the region referred to generally as the Algoma district the ore may prove an extremely lucrative enterprise for years to come. The present center of activity is in Ontario about 75 miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, and just north of Lake Huron. It stacks up as one of the large uranium discoveries in the Western Hemisphere. For a change modern mining machinery working against large ore faces of predictable grade will enable mine operators to send a product to mills of several thousand tons daily capacity. Ore shapes-up as worth more than $20 per ton. Already, many millions of tons of ore have been outlined and apparently reserves are sufficient to keep the proposed large mills going for decades. And the end is not yet in sight. This region in the Sudbury subdivision has been known for decades as having occasionally rich but sporadic occurrences of nickel, gold, pyrite, and other minerals. Because of the unpredictable mineralization for more than 80 miles along the contact line of a huge reversed "S" there was no record of successfully organized mining in the district-until the present one.

High capacity off-highway haulage trucks equipped with electric wheel drives have been available for commercial applications since 1963 and, although still interesting to study, cannot be considered as a "new" type of equipment any longer. However, the electric wheel drive components which played a key role in the development of these trucks has indirectly led to another new trucking development-the gas turbine engine for off -highway vehicles. Although most of the production models of the electric-wheel haulage trucks are equipped with 700 hp engines (the largest production engine commonly available), the electric drive components of the motorized wheel were designed to transmit more than 700 hp. To utilize this added potential, 1000-hp class diesel engines are in the process of being developed, but progress has been much slower than expected. The delay has caused some engineering thoughts to concentrate on the adaptation of the 1000-hp gas turbine engines, originally designed for aircraft applications, for use in haulage trucks. The question in most minds centered around the ability of such an engine to withstand the tough usage expected of it in an open pit.

THE supercooling behavior of pure liquid metal droplets has been described.' The solidification behavior of small droplets of Cu-Ni alloys as a function of composition is described herein. The Cu-Ni system is of interest for such an investigation because the components are miscible in all proportions in both the liquid and solid state and the phase diagram of the system, Fig. 1, is a type often encountered in metal systems. It was noted by Van Riemsdyk2 and others that the nature of the "blick" of gold droplets during assaying is not perceptibly affected by the content of the platinum group metals that are soluble in both liquid and solid gold. With the exception of these very qualitative observations there appear to have been no prior investigations of the supercooling of alloy droplets. A series of nine alloys varying in composition by 10 pct (nominal weight) steps was made using certified OFHC copper, 99.996 pct purity, obtained from the American Brass Co., and electrolytic nickel pellets, 99.92 pct purity, obtained from the International Nickel Co. The alloys were melted and cast in vacuo in a high frequency induction furnace. Segregation was minimized by chill casting into 1-in. diam steel molds. Each alloy rod was homogenized at a temperature 50°C lower than the solidus for 100 hr in dry hydrogen. Samples for solidification experiments and chemical analysis were machined from the same portion of each rod and at a depth of in. from the rod surface. A Car-boloy tool was used in taking turnings to minimize contamination of sample by the cutting tool. As a check, a number of samples for microscopic observation were chipped from the ingot with a fragment of pyrex glass. The resultant data in all cases agreed, within experimental error, with the data obtained from machined turnings. A number of small particles, 30 to 50 micron diam, of a Cu-Ni alloy were placed in a quartz vial 1/32 in. diam x % in. long. This was inserted into a platinum ribbon heater and mounted in a high temperature microscope stage. The general procedure followed in inserting samples into the stage and measuring the temperature of melting and solidification was the same as described in an earlier paper.' A chromel-alumel thermocouple was used to study alloys of 88.93 pct Cu, 80.62 pct Cu, and 72.27 pct Cu. A platinum-10 pct rhodium thermocouple was used for the remainder of the alloys. Procedure The assembled high temperature microscope stage was first evacuated and the sample given a 2 min in situ treatment at 900 °C in dry hydrogen to remove surface oxides which might otherwise catalyze crystal nucleation. After this treatment the atmosphere was changed to purified helium and melting and solidification were observed microscopically. It was not possible to determine the solidus with certainty. However, the liquidus temperature was measured very accurately since the surface of the particle changed in appearance from coarse and uneven to smooth, mirror-like within a few degrees. The visually determined liquidus temperature was checked by finding the highest temperature to which the particle could be heated such that it did not supercool upon lowering the temperature. This temperature which checked within experimental error with that found by observing surface change was assumed to be characteristic of the thermody-namic liquidus. In order to minimize the effect of selective evaporation of copper from the alloy, samples were changed frequently and the droplets were heated no more than 50 °C in excess of the liquidus temperature T,. When the latter conditions were fulfilled, T, values were reproducible. After melting, the temperature was decreased slowly until the particles solidified. Molecular refraction is introduced as a new and improved third parameter for prediction of the PVT behavior of hydrocarbon systems. This parameter, characterizing the complex as well as the pure hydrocarbon systems (1) is a direct measure of London dispersion forces which affect the PVT behavior; (2) can be measured directly, accurately and easily for complex as well as pure hydrocarbon systems; (3) varies significantly between the reference substances thus allowing accurate interpolation of PVT properties; and (4) has a fundamentally sound basis. Molal average molecular refraction was used with the pseudocritical mixing rule proposed by Leland and Mueller to predict the molal volume of liquid and vapor for 84 published data points on nC4-nCI0, Cl-nC5, Cl-nC4-nC10 systems in the region of coexisting vapor-liquid and at the critical point. The same technique was applied to predict the densities of liquid hydrocarbon mixtures in the two-phase and single-phase regions near the critical point for seven different systems each having different properties of the heptanes-plus fraction, but all simulating the fluids of either gas-condensate or volatile oil reservoirs. A modification of the Leland-Mueller mixing rule for the determination of pseudocritical properties is also presented which yields more accurate liquid density predictions than the original form when used with the proposed third parameter. INTRODUCTION The PVT behavior of multicomponent systems has received widespread attention in the literature in recent years. A large portion of the reported work has stemmed from attempts to overcome the inherent difficulties encountered when using the standard compressibility-factor chart which shows 2 as a function of reduced temperature T, and and reduced pressure p,. This chart assumes that z, is constant for all systems. The error in this assumption is not pronounced for pipeline-type gases high in methane and low in heavy ends, particularly when contained at moderate pressures. For such gases the error in the calculated z is usually less than 2 to 3 per cent. However, the reliability of this approach becomes somewhat nebulous for gas condensate and volatile oil systems at high pressure. One logical approach has been to recognize the variation of 2,. This idea was first suggested by Meissner and Seferianl and used by Lyderson, Greenkorn and Hougen2 to prepare extensive tables of thermodynamic properties. Other third parameters have been proposed by Stockmeyer, Kihara, Riedel, Lightfoot, Bloomer and Pitzer. These were tested by Satter and Campbel13 for many gas mixtures and it was shown that they were inter-related. All of these third parameters have a common fault — they cannot be directly evaluated for the heptanes-plus fraction. Consequently, one necessary requisite of an improved method for predicting the density of multicomponent hydrocarbon systems, was development of a third parameter that could be evaluated for that fraction. PREVIOUS MULTICOMPONENT DENSITY PREDICTION METHODS Sage and Lacey4 suggested a method of using partial molal volumes for computing the density of hydrocarbon gas mixture for pressures to 3,000 psi. In this technique, they approximate the complex multicomponent gaseous mixtures by a quarternary system of methane, ethane, propane and butane. Sage, Hicks and Lacey5 suggest a method of using partial molal volumes for computing the density of hydrocarbon liquids. The results agree within 3 per cent of the experimental values. However, the composition range is limited to about 10 per cent by weight of methane. Consequently, this correlation does not cover the low-molecular-weight liquid similar to natural gasoline and high-pressure gas condensates.

During the past five years, the surface mining industry in Appalachia has launched itself into a technological revolution, which has never been equaled during a similar period of time. Operators have begun to realize that effectively restoring land to a useful purpose, to the satisfaction of all concerned, has to start at the beginning of the operation and be an integrated part of it throughout. In order to insure continued mining in the mountainous areas, with protection of aesthetic beauty, things really have had to change. And so the new steep slope mining theory of "controlled placement" has been developed. Controlled placement is a broad term which means the placement of spoil in steep areas where its condition can be completely stabilized and revegetated. This includes the head of valley fill, mountain top removal, haulback, over the shoulder, block cut, and any other methods where the over-burden is technically delivered, hauled, or compacted, so that there is no adverse after effects when mining has been completed. THE decision of the lower court (United States District Court for the Southern District of New York) in the suit of the Dwight & Lloyd Sintering Co., vs. John E. Greenawalt has been affirmed by the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In the original suit, infringement of seven patents was alleged, these covering the process of producing a sinter .out of finely pulverized metalliferous ores as practised in shallow pans operating intermittently in distinction to the Dwight 6: Lloyd continuous machine. The court found that the long delay in bringing suit precluded any recovery of profits from the defendant under the basic down-draft sintering patent, although Dwight & Lloyd are recognized as the inventors of this' contribution to the art and its .importance is acknowledged.

A method of calculating activities in binary systems having miscibility gaps is described. The method, which applies only to the phase in which the gap occurs, is exact when the function defined by the equation varies linearly with composition. Analytical and numerical solutions (as a function of the conjugate phase compositions) are presented for two coefficients A and B from which the thermodynamic activities can be calculated. Deviations from Henry's law, calculable by the method presented, are shown graphically for the particula~ case of the component i at the edge of the miscibility gap more remote .from pure component i. For symmetrical gaps, the deviation from Henry's law at this gap edge becomes smaller as the gap becomes wider, The interrelation of gap location, the direction of departures from Henry's law and the occurrence of maxima and minzma in these departures is discussed in some detail. Values for a and for activity calculated from phase diagrams show fair to excellent agreement with corresponding experimental values in the Al-Zn and CaO-SiO2 systems. WHEN structurally similar phases, B and 6, lie at the sides of a two-phase region in a constitution diagram, it can be assumed that, stably or metast-ably, they will become completely miscible at a higher temperature. The B and 6 phases are particular composition ranges of a single B6 phase region with a miscibility gap. Below, as above, the critical solution temperature, the free energy of formation of the 06 phase is a continuous function of composition through the range of the miscibility gap. It is the purpose of this paper to use this continuous free-energy function in order to develop a simple method for computing the thermodynamic activities in the B6 solution of a binary system. IN THE early evening of October 15, 1954, a large specially designed truck, convoyed by a second smaller one, arrived at Silver Bell, Arizona, completing a ten-hour 110-mile journey from Phoenix. The big truck was driven through gaps left in a previously prepared concrete foundation, the load was jacked up, the large girders that constituted the bed of the truck were pulled away, and the load was then lowered into place on the foundation. A crew of two men, the two truck drivers, finished the job in a little more than an hour. When they were through, a complete and attractive three-bedroom house, prefabricated in Phoenix, was almost ready for occupancy. About all that remained to do was to connect the utilities-water, electricity, plumbing, and gas. The kitchen and bathroom equipment and appointments were superior in every respect, and there was a built-in car port for the automobile of the prospective residents. This family domicile was one of more than one hundred, each averaging about $8,000 in cost, that the American Smelting and Refining Company has provided for its employees engaged in mining and milling 7,500 tons per day of low-grade Porphyry copper ore. Aside from the fact that it is more economical-partly because of the variety of union craftsmen needed to build and equip a house-to do the work in a city 110 miles away, the significant point is the high quality of housing that is provided for what may be called in nostalgic vein the "mining camp" of 1955. FOR a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strength than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laboratories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, (3 and y compounds, (17'21,30 or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. An essential mental equipment for planning exploration is the fullest possible knowledge of the way in which the orebodies occur in the region to be explored, also the realization that in no mining district is this knowledge complete, and that new facts of importance will be revealed to the explorer in every exploration if he is in the proper frame of mind to grasp them. The geology of the ore deposits of the Gogebic Range for a long time was thought to be relatively simple, but work in recent years, by several men, has proved that this is not the case. We now realize that we are far from knowing all the factors that have resulted in the localization of ore deposits. For example, we have long known that the intersections of the dikes and the foot wall were favorable places to look for ore, but only within the last few years have we learned that there are several horizons in the various members, well north of the foot wall, that are likely to carry ore. The influence of the numerous cross faults on orebodies is not known or appreciated beyond a general realization that they are important. Just how they may be favorable or unfavorable to the localization of ore is not known. Such elementary information as the positions of these faults is just beginning to appear on the mine maps. Such being the condition, one can hardly overestimate the importance to the various operators and fee owners of careful studies of conditions in their properties for the purpose of assuring themselves that they are not missing valuable ore—that they are doing all the exploration that their situation demands in order to secure maximum returns. Valuable ores have been missed in the past and will be missed in the future. Only with a complete knowledge of all the factors that have united to produce ore could anything else be expected. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to these facts briefly and to suggest a few of the principles that should guide effective exploration. The foremost principle is that the man who starts out with the idea that he knows all about the mine geology of the Gogebic Range is starting with a heavy handicap.

A notable amount of fossil resin exists in many of the bituminous coal beds of Utah, The upper part of these show a marked concentration of resin, which occurs primarily in the fracture seams. In general, these seams are less than 1/8 in. thick, but it is not uncommon to find coal with areas as thick as 3/8 in. The resin is of the hard kauri variety, with coloration varying from deep blood red to lemon yellow and almost colorless. There is also an almost black variety, which is not readily soluble in the same solvents as the lighter colored resins. These resins are valuable for many industrial purposes. When refined, they are suitable for uses similar to those for which lac resins are usually employed. They are particularly desirable for preparing dielectric varnishes. They are also desirable in preparing printing inks, waterproofing agents, special synthetic rubbers and rubber cements, They are especially suitable as an admixture in synthetic rubbers and cements, as they supply the essential tackiness the synthetics lack. The following chemical trade characteristics' have been found by Inter-Chemical Co. research chemists in the refined resins: Specific gravity (melted)....... Completely soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Insoluble in alcohols, ethyl acetate and other commonly used alcohols and esters. Compatible with natural and synthetic rubbers, chlorinated and cyclized rubbers, waxes, vegetable oils, mineral oils, rosin, ester gum, phenolic and modified phenolic resins and other natural and synthetic resins of like solvent solubility."* The recovery and refining of these fossil resins has been the subject of much research work and has intrigued many investigators. Broadly speaking, the problem involves separation of the resin from the coal into a very high-grade concentrate, and subsequent treatment of this concentrate to produce an acceptable refined resin for its various usages. The Fry cocurrent in situ combustion project was carried out in a 3.3-acre portion of a lenticular body of Robinson sandstone of Lower Pennsylvanian age. This particular sand body is about 12,000 ft long and 3,500 ft wide; it varies in thickness from 0 to 55 ft, trends northeast-southwest, and occurs at depths between 880 and 936 ft. The reservoir is made lip of three distinct types of sandstone, each having characteristic reservoir properties. (See Table I.) Textural gradients, sedimentary structures, erosional basal contact, absence of marine fossils, and geometry of the sand body all indicate that the sandstone is of fluvial origin and part of an extensive complex of river-deposited sedirnents. Geographically oriented cores reveal that the direction of depositing currents was to the southwest, parallel with the sand-body trend. Directions of maximum pernleability also parallel the northeast-southwest trend. The layered nature of the sandstone reservoir and its directional properties have controlled the areal distribution of produced gas, the ignition behavior, and the vertical profile and horizontal extent of the conbustion zone. INTRODUCTION This paper is the first of a series of three papers that describe Marathon Oil Co.'s Fry in situ combustion test. This first paper contains the results of a detailed study of the geology and reservoir characteristics of the Robinson sandstone reservoir in which the Fry test was conducted. The second and third parts of this series report on the field operations' and performance. The geologic work reiated to cores cut through the combustion zone, and to the effect of reservoir properties on the combustion process is included in the third paper.' GEOLOGIC STUDY OF THE FRY RESERVOIR The close spacing of continuous cores in the Fry combustion site provided an unusual opportunity to study the details of distribution of lithology and reservoir properties within a petroleum reservoir. The objectives of the study were: 1. To determine the distribution of rock types within the Robinson sandstone in the Fry area; 2. To determine the relationship of porosity and permeability to rock properties and establish the distribution and homogeneity of reservoir properties; 3. To determine the origin of the Robinson reservoirs so that attempts could be made to predict the size, shape, distribution, extent and continuity of Robinson reservoirs; and 4. To determine what effects, if any, the reservoir rocks might have on the combustion process, so that the process might be better evaluated. AVAILABLE MATERIALS Continuous cores were cut from 14 wells in the vicinity of the Fry site. Ten of the cores are from within the 3.3-acre pattern; six of the 10 were cut prior to combustion, and four were cut through the combustion zone. RANKING high in the nation's wealth of natural resources, readily available liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons are nevertheless falling steadily in supply, while industrial requirements for hydro- carbon compounds are greater today than during the peak period of World War II. Theoretically, several processes will increase the future supply of liquid and gaseous fuels, but the practical application of these methods depends on two controlling factors: 1-that enough carbon- bearing material be available to warrant industrial exploitation, and 2-that the given process be physically, chemically, and economically applicable. With regard to the first factor, the Western Hemisphere is fortunately well supplied, see Table I.

Invasion experiments were run on Berea sandstone cores to get laboratory measurements of resistivity and saturation profiles characteristic of water and oil sands invaded by mud filtrate. Injection rates were as low as 1.13 cm/D, and the cores were 30 to 36 in. long, cut parallel to the bedding planes. In the water-sand case, the resistivity profiles revealed the existence of an extensive transition zone between flushed and uncontaminated zones. In the linear geometry of the experiment, the width of the transition zone increased as the square root of the injected fluid volume. For the oil-sand case the core was prepared by displacing the formation water with kerosene to minimum water saturation. During the subsequent invasion experiment. oil saturation was measured directly by means of an oil-soluble radioactive tracer, and resistivity profiles along the core were taken at the same time. These data were interpreted in terms of an oil-water front, followed by a formation water bank, a zone of mixed waters, and finally, invaded mud filtrate near the borehole. Micro-fingering and capillarity seemed to affect considerably the resistivity profiles observed in the invaded oil-sand experiment. Beyond the regular conductive annulus or "low zone", it was found that a resistive "anti-annulus" could also be formed. As a result of these experiments, some simplified invasion profiles have been accepted and are being used in Grand Slam* interpretations. INTRODUCTION The importance of the mud filtrate-invaded zone in interpreting electrical logs has long been recognized.',* In trying to account for its effect, only very simple models of the resistivity profiles in the radial direction from the borehole have been used. In fact, most log interpretation charts have been based on resistivity models consisiting of two media of uniform resistivity (R, and R,) abruptly separated at the diameter of invasion. Such a clean separation of the media of different resistivities seems unrealistic, since flushing may not be perfect and may vary with radial distance into the formation.3** The nature of the transition zone, when it is within the radius of investigation of the surveying devices, may affect the log readings. Campbell and Martin' verified that a conductive annulus containing a high percentage of formation water may be formed when mud filtrate invades an oil-bearing sand. Interpretations which are to include the effect of such an annulus require the addition to the model of a conductive zone located at the outer rim of the invaded zone.' Using the Buckley-Leverett relations,6 aturation profiles may be derived, from which resistivity profiles can be calculated. Results of such computations by K. S. Kunz and J. H. Moran were given in a paper by Dumanoir. Tixier and Martin,7 and led to the construction of log interpretation charts which were based on a representation with three media of resistivities R, R0 and R1. Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of a resistivity profile which includes an annulus. Campbell and Martin realized that, during the invasion of an oil sand, both capillarity and mixing would contribute to rounding of the profile shown in Fig. 1. THE native copper of Lake Superior occurs in the form of fine grains and scales, disseminated in small percentage through the copper-bearing rock ; and in large and small masses, from a few pounds to several hundred tons in weight. Formerly the bulk of the copper came from the mines of Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties, producing mass copper. At present these mines furnish less than one-tenth of the total product, and fully one-half of this is from a single mine. The masses are usually found irregularly distributed in nearly vertical fissure veins, and require much dead work in sinking, drifting, and stoping for their development. The risk and expense attending the working of these mines have made them, with few exceptions, anything but profitable. * Read at the Montreal meeting, September, 1880.

THE tendency all over Europe, just as it is with us, is to go to the use of turbines for new construction or replacement of old steam or even gas engines. 'The lower construction cost and the lower operating cost, when they can have high steam temperatures and pressures, together with their efficiency, is the cause of this change to turbines, both high and low pressure. The present trend is to equip plants with modern, efficient steam boilers, turbines, etc., and gradually work into high-pressure superheated steam equipment to accomplish a saving. One company has just completed a 375 to 400 lb., 700 deg. superheated steam installation and turbo-blowers with this end in view. Some of our new steam plants are using 350 lb. working pressure.

In two recent papers stevens13,14 has compared the methods used by various investigators to calculate the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total creep strain. In previous work Gittins15 has shown that the strain due to grain boundary sliding Egb may be estimated from the lateral, d, and vertical, v, displacements of a longitudinal marker line as it crosses a grain boundary. He obtained the formula, where nL is the number of grains per unit length measured on the specimens before creep, and \p and ?2 are, respectively, the angle between the grain boundary and the stress axis in the plane of the surface and normal to the surface (see Ref. 13, Fig. 1). The subscript L indicates that observations are made in a longitudinal direction parallel to the stress axis. It was generally found more convenient to measure the grain size of a specimen before creep; this was necessary to characterize the specimen. Stevens13,14 however prefers to define Egb in terms of NL, the number of grains per unit length after creep. Since nL - NL(l + €1) where cr is the total strain, Eq. 1 11 becomes The quantities d and ?, can be determined directly from the marker lines, while v and ?2 are found by sectioning normal to the surface. In the interior when symmetry considerations suggest that v = d and ?1 - ?2 the strain due to grain boundary sliding may be estimated from a suitable internal longitudinal marker line by the equation To determine cgb at the surface using either Eqs. |1| or [2] requires a large number of observations, particularly if many estimates of cgb are required, and also it is impossible to determine the variation of cgh with creep strain on the same specimen because the specimen must be sectioned to determine ?2. Gittins15 found that for a number of materials the sliding vectors d and v were related to each other so that provided one was measured the other could be estimated. Also during creep, grain boundaries tend to migrate to meet the surface at angles close to 90 deg,16 so that the term nL(v/tan?2)L was comparatively small when 4,- 90 deg. By determining the frequency distributions of ?2 on control specimens this term can be estimated without sectioning the creep specimen. In this way an empirical equation based on Eqs. |1| and |2| enables cgb to be determined with reasonable accuracy with fewer observations of the angles and sliding components. For B brass, the relationship between the sliding vectors indicated that ceb = 0.85nLVL . In Table I of Stevens paper this equation is stated to be incorrectly derived. However it should be pointed out that this is an empirical equation derived from Eq. |1|, based on a knowledge of the relationship between d and v and on the frequency distributions of ?1 and ?2 for a particular material under given experimental conditions. It was used only when these relationships were known, to reduce the number of observations required to estimate cb. Therefore the comment "derivation incorrect does not apply. Gittins did in fact make use of Eqs. |1| and 131. Author's Reply I must apologize to Dr. Gittins for the inadvertent misrepresentation of his work. Other slight errors in Table I have been pointed out to me. Langdon (No. 12 Table I), Gifkins (No. 7, Table I), and possibly other workers did not measure the number of boundaries per unit length after creep (A') but the corresponding quantity bejove creep (n). As Dr. Gittins points out, a completely analogous set of equations to those given in the paper can be derived by the same method: using the number of boundaries per unit length before instead of after creep. The basic equations corresponding to Eqs. [2] and 171 of the paper, from which all the others can be derived, are
