INTRODUCTION An understanding of the role of water in controlling the stability of rock masses is central for a rational approach to the subject. The presence of water can hinder mining opera- tions in two ways: 1. excessive discharge 2. excessive pressure It should be noted that if the rock mass is very tight, excessive pressures can exist without large discharges. Alternatively, if abundant water is available and the rock mass is open, then substantial discharges can occur under quite small pressures. The problems associated with excessive discharge are usually well understood by the mining engineer. Vehicle mobility is inhibited, some areas are flooded and hence become inaccessible; at best, a costly nuisance exists. The methods of solving these problems are also well-known to mining engineers. They generally involve tapping the source of the excessive discharge and channeling it away in such a manner that any hindrance to the mining operation is minimized. The effects of water pressure on the stability of rock masses are less obvious and the following will be devoted solely to this aspect of the problem. The manner in which water pressures enter into the consideration of stability is made clear by an understanding of the concept of effective stress. THE CONCEPT OF EFFECTIVE STRESS The simplest mechanical model for the problem of rock slope stability consists of a rough, rigid block sliding down an inclined plane under the influence of gravity. This is illustrated in [Fig. 1]. The down-slope component of the weight of the block tends to produce movement which is resisted by the shearing force generated by friction along the base of the block. AN instrument has recently been developed for determining the inclination and azimuthal direction of boreholes. This instrument is known as the Tro-Pari Instrument and is the invention of C. Trotter and G. Pajari of Sudbury, Ontario. DESCRIPTION The instrument is characterized by a unit mounted in gimbals and provided with a clockwork mechanism to clamp a compass to indicate azimuthal direction and simultaneously to clamp the unit in its plumb position to indicate inclination (Fig I). By means of a timing ring suitably calibrated in 5-min divisions, the unit may be set to lock after a lapse of time sufficient to allow the placing of the instrument at the desired point in the drill hole where readings are to be taken. The maximum time lapse obtainable with the instrument designed for use in EX or AX size holes is 1 hr 30 min which is considered to be ample time to lower to the greatest depths that may be drilled with this size of equipment. Larger sizes could be developed for larger diameter holes such as BX and NX sizes or the larger oil-well sizes and a correspondingly greater time lapse could be provided for. Up to the present time only the EX-AX size has been built. OPERATION Assuming a borehole is to be surveyed at 1000-ft depth and assuming it will take 30 min to lower the instrument to this depth, the timing ring is rotated through seven divisions which represent a time lapse of 35 min (5-min leeway) and is then returned to its zero position. This operation imparts energy to a spring which drives the clockwork mechanism. Simultaneously the compass needle is freed to swing to its magnetic north-south position and the encased mechanism is freed to hang plumb within a semicircular portion of the frame which is graduated in degrees after the fashion of a protractor. This semicircular protractor portion has a V-shaped notch at each degree division of its inner periphery. The instrument, now in its free position, is inserted in a bronze container made to suit the size of hole to be surveyed (Fig 2). Soft rubber washers are provided within the container to prevent undue shock. The container is connected to the drill rods with three 5-ft lengths of brass or aluminum alloy rods separating it from the steel rods in order to prevent distortion of the magnetic field. The assembly is then lowered to the desired point where readings are to be taken and is allowed to remain at rest until a period of time has elapsed slightly in excess of the time for which the timing ring was set. In the example cited above, when the 35 min has elapsed the compass needle is locked in its north-south position and the protractor locking pin is extruded and locks in the V notch opposite its plumb position. Methods are presented for measuring and comparing "degree" of water drive, and for observing the control that rate of withdrawal exerts over decline of reservoir pressure. Degree of water drive is studied from pressure-production curves of 10 reservoirs; the method used to present these comparatively is to convert cumulative oil production from barrels to percentage of ultimate. Degree of water drive is also represented by a "water-encroachment factor," representing barrels of water influx per pound-month per acre-foot of oil reservoir. Pressure-production curves for the water-drive reservoirs after a period of declining pressure show a diminishing angle of slope, in some cases to the point where pressure ceases to decline or where it even increases; the shapes of these curves are in marked contrast to the dissolved-gas type of curve, which shows a general trend toward zero pressure at ultimate oil recovery. Yearly rate of oil production in percentage of ultimate oil recovery is correlated with pressure decline. The correct rate of production of oil with its associated gas and water sustains pressure in reservoirs having a high water-encroachment factor. For reservoirs having a low water-encroachment factor, it is necessary to inject the produced water and even inject large volumes of water from an outside source. The discussion of the actual reservoirs is preceded by a general review and is followed by a substantial bibliography. It is now generally accepted that water drive is capable of yielding 60 to 80 per cent of the original oil in place in most reservoirs, as compared with 20 to 40 per cent for dissolved-gas drive. There is no need to question the importance of controlling a reservoir in order to take advantage of such an efficient mechanism. What is a water-drive reservoir? Oil reservoirs usually combine two or more of the four basic mechanisms: dissolved-gas drive, gas-cap drive, water drive, gravity drainage. A water-drive reservoir is one in which water advances to take the place of the oil and gas produced. When the oil withdrawal rate is sufficiently low, the water will tend to maintain pressure. The maximum effectiveness is attained when the water follows the oil withdrawal so closely that little or no decline in pressure occurs. Oil in its underground reservoir is associated with water. This water is significant in the production of the oil according to the source of supply and the permeability of the surrounding formation. As oil is produced and the pressure is lowered, water can move in to replace the oil. With adequate supply and sufficient permeability, actual movement takes place on an extensive scale. The first movement of water takes place by expansion of the water and its associated fluids. While this expansion is of little importance in some fields, in others it is sufficient to supply all of the energy required for the production of oil. THERE are several postulations for the mechanism of slime-coating. Ince1 proposed the electrostatic hypothesis, del Giudice2 suggested the chemical theory; Bankoff3 reported that slime-coating is inhibited whenever the surfaces of the slime particles are ionized sufficiently for Brownian movement to occur, and is facilitated when they are not. These postulations were examined by experiments involving the Burton tube, the cataphoretic cell, and slime-coating. The techniques involved will be described elsewhere in this paper. The electrostatic hypothesis, supported by migration experiments in a Burton tube, was abandoned by del Giudice.2 Experiments of mineral migration in a Burton tube, after the idea of Ince with modification, indicated that this apparatus was inefficient for accurate observation. A cataphoretic cell was constructed. The experimental data, as shown in this paper, enable the correlation and advancing of this hypothesis. Del Giudice's chemical hypothesis considered that slime particles are attached to the galena surfaces by a cement formed as the result of a metathetical reaction between the sulphide and the slime particles. Applying this hypothesis, the calcite slime particles were cemented to the galena surface by the formation of a cementing lead carbonate. In a similar way, lead silicate was considered as the cement of quartz slime coating on galena. Experiments verifying this hypothesis were carried out according to the following procedure: Fresh mineral particles selected from the central part of the broken lumps and examined first under a microscope for ascertaining a clean surface were placed in a small beaker (1.5-in. dia. by 2.5 in. deep) half filled with one kind of slime pulp. The dilution of all slime pulp was 4: 1 and the particle size of slime was minus 400-mesh. After agitation for 5 min. the specimen was removed by a sharp-end tong and washed gently three times in three separate distilled water baths. It was dried before a small electrical fan and examined immediately under a microscope. A photograph was made of the observation. With reference to the published solubilities,4 several of these experiments, which contradict the chemical hypothesis, are listed as following: I. The coating of fluorite slime on the galena surface was light but the coating of galena slime on the fluorite surface was heavy. In a similar way, the coating of quartz slime on the galena was fairly light, but the coating of galena slime on the quartz particle was heavy. According to the chemical hypothesis, using the same constituents and regardless of which is the slime, the density of the coating should be expected to be the same. A number of investigators have noted the importance of various precipitation reactions on the properties of commercial-purity beryllium.1-5 Carrabine, for example, has demonstrated the interaction of iron and aluminum on the mechanical properties of hot-pressed polycrystalline beryllium.6 He considered the determining factor on elevated-temperature properties to be a reversible AlFeBe, precipitation reaction which could be directly related to the Fe/Al impurity ratio of the beryllium. Any aluminum in excess of the stoichio-metric amount required to form A1FeBe4 was presumed to remain primarily in the grain boundaries. We have observed, by transmission electron microscopy, such a grain boundary effect after various heat treatments of beryllium sheet. The starting material in this investigation was bare-rolled beryllium ingot sheet (0.001 to 0.005 in. thick), in contrast to the hot-pressed powder utilized by Carra-bine. It should be noted from the ingot sheet analysis shown in Table I that the Fe/Al weight ratio was near unity which would provide some free aluminum although the total aluminum and iron content was still small. Fig. l(a) shows some aluminum or aluminum-rich precipitates in the grain boundaries of a beryllium foil which had been quenched from 1200°C into brine at -TPC. Similar grain boundary precipitates were found, particularly at grain boundary intersections, in other samples quenched from 1100° and 1000°C. The length of annealing time at these elevated temperatures did not appear to substantially alter the amount of grain boundary precipitates, thus attesting to their relative insolubility. LEONARD Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is process design, operation and maintenance to produce an acceptable product which can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of these interests, attention to the unrealized potential value of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of both the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modem coal preparation plant. Thus, coal types having similar physical and chemical properties tend to become increasingly concentrated according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches which are sandwiched together in layers and which visually differ from each other by physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, six percentage points of dry volatile matter and 10 percentage points of total sulfur.1 Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content and undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter which might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long established fact that coal is not homogeneous as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance. Since both coal and associated minerals entering a preparation plant are highly heterogeneous, a multi-product potential beginning with certain flotation cell concentrates and ending with plant refuse may exist. Such a potential can and to a limited extent is achieved at some operations by drawing off coal according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry differences from individual coal cleaning processes. Such a sequenced draw-off of coal of increasing ash increments could yield, among other products, chemical coals, coking coals, coals for pulverized fuel boilers, cyclone boiler coals, coals for cement plants, limestone, shale and clay. Some explanation of methods of testing will be given before presenting the record of a series of physical tests of aluminum, other metals and alloys. I. The Methods Employed and Meaning of Diagrams. The test-bars used, 12 inches long and 4 inch square, are cast in green sand, with chills bedded in such a way that the ends of the bar run against them. By splitting the ends of the bar the depth of chill can be measured. The chills being held in the mould 121/8 inches apart, the space between the end of the bar and the face of the chill, after both are alike cold, is the amount of shrinkage, and is recorded in thousandths of an inch per foot.

A bean placed at the bottom of tubing in flowing wells is not a new idea. In fact, a device which in effect was a bottom bean was patented prior to 1890 by John D. Rockefeller. Because of the limited use of the bottom bean, prior to 1922, when it was installed in a few wells in the Santa Fe Springs field, California, the knowledge of the results of its operation is very meager. Since then various oil operators have experimented with bottom beans, but most of the records of the results obtained by their use are unavailable. For the past year or two, more attention has been directed to this method of producing wells; the theory and best means of application have been studied, and accurate records maintained. In theory, the use of bottom beans in flowing or gas-lift wells should secure certain advantageous results. With the exception of flow friction of the tubing and flow lines, there is no back-pressure held on the rising column of fluid. Thus severe beaning is possible with no danger of killing the well by too heavy a fluid column, a condition that often exists when a surface bean is used. The whole energy of the gas expanding to atmospheric pressure is utilized to lift the fluid in the well. The same effect is obtained when flowing a well through open tubing or casing. In using a surface bean this energy of expanding gas is wasted into the flow lines beyond the bean, because the fluid has reached the surface by the time the restriction is reached and the work of the gas performed. The bottom bean affords an efficient use of the expanding force of gas, utilizing less gas to raise the same amount of oil, hence allowing for lower gas-oil ratios. The flow restriction being at the entrance to the flow string, a more uniform mixture of gas and oil enters the tubing and a steadier backpressure is held on the well. The uniform mixture and high velocity attained while flowing through the bean, which is above the critical velocity required to suspend a spray condition of gas and oil, prevent slippage of gas, surging and heading with its resultant strain on the casing. The advantageous conditions allow positive control of production in gas-lift wells within limits set by the bean size and amount of input gas; and probably help to prevent sanding up of a well and the coning

The method of treating hazards wherein value is decreased, is cited by R. D. Parks. Quite properly, the theory of probabilities is made use of when multiple hazards are under consideration. E. F. Fitzhugh, Jr. $ deals with the enhancement phase graphically and uses percentage of expectancy as derived by a study of conditions and the selection of a chance factor. It is believed that both of the authors referred to fully recognize the part which human judgment plays, and as coupled with experience, training, and the application of the theory of probabilities; in that respect the composer of this paper is in accord. Within the past year, the task of arriving at a mathematical method for handling the enhancement phase, and, additionally, coupling the negative and positive phases, was explored. In citing the hazard, or negative phase, reference is made to the text by Parks. Types of Items far Consideration On the hazard, or negative, side some of the common items to be considered are: 1. Subsidence and resulting damage. 2. Flo wage of water above that anticipated. 3. Geological. (a) Decline in quality of probable ore, and/or (b) Decline in quantity of probable ore. 4. Depressed economic conditions. 5. Litigation. Similarly, on the enhancement, or positive, side common items to be considered are: 1. Flo wage of water below that estimated. 2. Geological. (a) Increase in quality of probable ore, and/or (b) Increase in quantity of probable ore. 3. Elevated economic conditions. 4. Litigation. 5. Technological advance in the art. Tn all of the above items no consideration is given to placing a value on, or giving consideration to, possibilities. For example, referring to Table 1, the estimated normal present value (Vp) of a property, exclusive of risk consideration, is taken as $100,000. If subsidence affects the usefulness of the shaft, the present value of the property will decrease to $60,000, and it is judged that there is a 1 in 4 chance that the shaft will be impaired;, consequent.ly, if subsidence took place, the present value would be reduced ($100,000-$60,000) $40,000, but since the chance is 1 in 4, the allowable reduction would be only one-fourth of $40,000, or $10,000, or a discount of 10 pct (hazard factor) of the original value; the related safety factor is taken as unity minus 0.10, or 0.90. Thus, the original Vp, $100,000, multiplied by the safety factor ($100,000 X 0.90) gives $90,000, which is the adjusted present value of the property in this single instance. Additionally, there is a water hazard, which, if encountered, will reduce the present value to $85,000. The chance is 1 in 3. Following through with the same reasoning as shown above, the derived safety factor will be 0.95. To arrive at a single multiplying factor which will express the combined risks, the two safety factors are multiplied together, 0.90 X 0.95 = 0.855. WHEN impure Zn (< 99.99 pct)&apos;&apos;Z or Zn-Cd alloys3 are progressively solidified, a cell or "corrugation" substructure4 is produced in the solid, with a high impurity or solute concentration along the cell walls. When these materials are polished and suitably etched, etch pits are often observed along the cell walls. For the Zn-Cd alloys these etch pits have been associated with decorated dislocations, present in the corrugation boundaries to accommodate the lattice strain. In the course of an investigation of Zn-2 pct Au alloy, molten metal of this alloy was poured into cold water and the resultant solid pieces were sectioned, polished and etched with a Cr0 ethant. An extremely regular cell pattern was observed on the etched surface, similar in general to the corrugation structure previously reported for impure zinc and Zn-Cd alloys. At higher magnification, regularly spaced pits were observed along the cell boundaries. An example of the regular cell pattern at the center of a specimen is shown in the center and lower portions of Fig. 1; the top of the figure shows the pattern near the specimen surface. Typical etch pits in the cell walls are shown in Fig. 2. It was surprising that a cell pattern as regular as that shown in the center of Fig. 1 was produced at the very rapid solidification rates used (estimated as > 1 cm per sec). In addition, the distribution coefficient for the Zn-Au system is greater than 1. Accordingly, the center of the cells should be rich in solute and should etch

IN 1915, the State of California passed a law of great scope and importance. This law has been in successful operation for., year and may be briefly described as an act "establishing and creating a department of. the State Mining Bureau for the protection of the natural resources of petroleum and gas from waste and destruction through improper operations in production; providing for the inspection of petroleum and gas wells; requiring all persons operating petroleum and gas wells to make certain reports" and providing the necessary officers and assessments-to carry out the provisions of the act. The statute provides for a separate department of the State Mining Bureau, under the general supervision of the State mineralogist, with a staff composed of a "state oil and gas supervisor" and four deputies. It rules that all petroleum and natural gas wells shall be drilled, operated or abandoned under the supervision of the State supervisor, who shall order such tests or remedial work as seems to him necessary to protect the interests of property owners and the general public. It also provides for a board of arbitration to consider orders given by the supervisor which are not acceptable to the well owner. Section 18 of the, act, which is the provision that is directly related to, this paper, requires "the owner of any well referred to in this act to keep a careful and accurate log of the drilling of such well;" and further requires that this log shall show the character and depth of the formations passed through or encountered in the drilling, particularly the location and depth of the water-bearing strata; the character of the water encountered (so far as ascertained); whether the water was shut off, and, if so, at what point; that it shall show completely the amounts, kinds and size of casing used; the depth at which oil-bearing strata are encountered; the depth and character of the strata, and whether all water was successfully and permanently shut off so as to prevent percolation or penetration into the oil-bearing strata. -

The separation of minerals by heavy liquids is a standard laboratory technique which goes back at least 50 years, but commercially economic application of this principal to ore concenfration has been prevented by problems of liquid recovery. Recent investigations which demonstrate the different types of liquid-solid systems on various ores using the two major heavy liquids - methylene bromide and tetra-bromoelhane — are discussed in this article. As a result of these studies, over-all liquid recovery, and especially desorption of heavy liquid from the mineral surface, was improved by the use of surfactants as well as both thermal and mechanical energy. The examples given in the article indicate that heavy liquids which should find major commercial use in ore concentration are now available. The sink-float process using a heavy liquid medium has long been recognized as a nearly perfect method of mineral separation based on the differences in density of the minerals. The use of heavy liquid separation (HLS) offers the potential of an ore dressing method that provides the maximum possible natural concentrate grade and high recovery. In addi- tion the process requires no water, causes no waste disposal problems, and is extremely simple — the crushed ore is merely introduced into a liquid whose density is between that of the minerals to be separated. The minerals lighter than the liquid float while those heavier than the liquid sink. As such, HLS has become a standard laboratory tool but major commercial application has been prevented by the requirement for complete recovery of the heavy liquid, imposed by economics and materials handling hazards. Investigations, both in the United States and abroad, have shown that improved liquid stability as well as improved chemical engineering techniques brighten the future for HLS in ore dressing. The available commercial heavy liquids suitable for mineral separation cost from $2.00 to $20.00 per gallon1 and on this basis alone their complete recovery is economically desirable. Possibly of even greater importance is the fact that any residual heavy liquid remaining on the products could create a serious toxicity hazard. Consequently, to make the process commercially attractive requires (1) essentially complete removal of the liquid from the ore products and (2) optimum recovery of the liquid for reuse. Until recently these two stipulations have remained as obstacles but laboratory and pilot plant research now in progress suggests that these may soon be overcome. Various heavy liquid recovery systems have been proposed to meet these requirements and might be classified into one or more of the following three general classes: Solvent Wash (Fig. 1): The dissolution of the heavy liquid from the ore with a less expensive solvent,

Receiving the Richards Award is undoubtedly the most memorable event in my entire life. There should, however, be more names engraved on it. These are the names of men who were my teachers (but not all of the academic variety) and my friends, each of whom had a part in my ever continuing education and thus have a part of this award. There was Bill Caldwell who made me into a chemist, and Will Shorey who added a lot of ore dressing. There was Rush Spedden who put me to work in his minerals research lab, Joe Brennan who made me turn my research into plant practice, and Tom Meek who sent me all over the world on metallurgical jobs. Bob Cheatham and Abe Dor taught me to try to give the client what he needs rather than what he wants, while Ed Malouf and Casey Davis always gave their particular brand of advice at exactly the right time. And, lastly, there was Leo Abell and Frank McQuiston, both fine metallurgists and the best friends a man could have. In addition to those I have mentioned, there are literally scores of others I would like to acknowledge with my sincere appreciation.

In the paper the authors show [(Fig. 12)] in diagramatic form a "typical vacuum filtration system." This indicates a drum filter with two filtrate receivers-one for mother liquor and one for wash liquor. Have the authors ever found a drum filter that will adequately separate mother liquor from wash liquor? I recall in about 1957 being superintendent of a major copper leaching operation treating oxide flotation concentrates. The plan was being expanded, and filters installed to replace CCD following acid leaching and primary thickening of the pulp. The design of the expansion allowed the mother liquor to join the thickener overflow as feed for the electrolytic tankhouse. The water balance required that only pan of the wash liquor could be electrolysed direct, and the remainder had to be treated by lime precipitation. The design assumed the mother liquor would have the same copper content (about 50 gpl) as in the leach pulp solution, and the wash liquor about 50% of this (25 gpl from memory). You can imagine my horror when, on starting up, the solution from the mother liquor receiver contained somewhat under 40 gpl and, from the wash liquor receiver, somewhat over 40 gpl. The filters were provided by two of the most reputable manufacturers and, in the end I believe they agreed that never before had they supplied rotary drum filters that would segregate the filtrates. By changes to the valve design we made minor improvements, but eventually decided that insufficient segregation of the filtrates was possible to warrant trying to do it. On further consideration I concluded that, owing to the time delay between solution passing through the cake and entering the valve, segregation was impossible, though radical alteration of the internal piping of the filter might have improved it. I would be interested to know if anyone has found a solution to this problem using a drum filter. If not, why go on publishing information that infers that it is possible?

PRACTICAL or applied geophysics-as we designate the border region between physics and geophysics on one hand and practical geology on the other-has as its object the application of physical or geophysical methods of investigation to problems of practical geology. Its field of operation comprises all methods of physical measurement that are used in the problem of determining, from the geophysical influences of the subsoil that can be measured at the surface of the earth, the special characteristics of the association of strata, faults, etc., to detect the presence of deposits and to investigate underground structures. It therefore represents an aid, a physical method of research in practical geology, and is inseparably connected with geological studies; for this reason, it is also called geophysical prospecting. Formerly research methods of practical geology were based on observation exclusively: first, on the observation of the strata and formations at accessible tarts of the surface of the earth, especially in shafts, borings and mines if such were available; then on the observation of the tectonic conditions in so far as these were already known at places directly visible; and finally, by estimation of the importance of formations of the terrane. Later, there were added in special cases, analytical chemical crystallographical, petrographical and similar investigations of rock samples which were taken from the places under consideration. The knowledge thus obtained is of value and is expanded by hypotheses and constructions that are supported by geological theories of origin and by laws of the sequence of formations and rock systems, which are based on long experience.
