The objective of this investigation of the Cendrex was to determine the applicability of the X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash content of coal. Developed by the Dutch State Mines, this instrument is designed to provide ash analysis of any desired coal product with only a 5-minute lag between sample collection and analytical result. The unit could, with limit controls, be used to feed back signals to preset the separating gravity of coal washers, control the ratio of various coals needed to produce an acceptable blend, and permit the sorting of a washed product into two qualities, one which is below and the other which is above a prescribed ash content. This unit can also be used discontinuously for rapid determination of samples of coals taken in the usual manner.

THE iron fields described here are located in the Iron Springs and Pinto Mining districts, Iron County, Utah. This region is in southwestern Utah, about 260 miles south from Salt Lake City, and is reached by the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad of the Union Pacific system. The iron fields lie at an elevation of 5500 to 7500 ft. above sea level, and are essentially desert in character. They are covered with a light growth of sage brush, piñon pine, and scattered cedar. Weather conditions are unusually favorable for all-year mining operations, the winters being mild with little or no snow; and the summers not excessively hot, the temperature rarely rising to 100° during the day, while the nights are invariably cool. The iron-ore bearing area extends from the Iron Springs district to the Iron Mountain mining district, being approximately 25 miles long in a northeast-southwest direction, and from 1 to 3 miles wide in a northwest-southeast direction. In the Iron Springs and Pinto mining districts, the ore occurs at various points around three sides of Granite Mountain and Iron Mountain. This is readily understood by reference to Figs. 1-4. These mountains are composed of andesite, which has been forced up through the surrounding sedimentary formation, in the form of laccoliths. An extensive report on the geology of these districts was made by Leith and Harder,1 who state: The three dominating geological features of the district are three large andesite laccoliths which constitute the Three Peaks, Granite Mountain, and Iron Mountain; lying in a northeast-southwest line across the area in question. Three unconformable sedimentary series, aggregating 4000 ft. in thickness, outcrop in successive rings around these laccoliths, dipping outward asymmetrically, very steeply at the contact, less steeply further away. Still farther from the laccoliths, lava-flows 2000 ft. thick rest in nearly horizontal attitudes on the tilted sedimentary rocks. These general relations are modified by faulting. All of the rock formations of the district are more or less covered on the middle and lower slopes by unconsolidated and partly consolidated erosion debris, both aqueous and subaerial, which spreads out on the lower ground to make the deserts.

The Magma copper vein trends east-west, dips 70" south, and cuts through a 6000-ft thickness of limestones, quartzites,. shale, diabase, and schist. The vein is itself a fault with a horizontal offset of 500 ft on the formation contacts in the two walls. There are two principal faults of large displacement and numerous smaller steep and flat faults that complicate the prediction of ore occurrence. A study of the geology, its systematic recording to facitliate ready reference, and graphic methods of interpretation of mineralization have aided the exploration, development, 2nd mining of the ore. In making predictions of the distribution of mineable ore bodies and their shape in critical areas, studies are made of "mineralization contours" and "mineralization trends," which are developed on a longitudinal section of the vein from variations in the concentration of the combined base metal content as shown by assays of available openings in the mine. Introduction This paper describes an example of geological work applied directly to mining and exploration problems in a deep vein deposit, and it is presented as being of interest especially to those engaged in working more or less similar veins. In 1944 to 1945 the writer spent a year as assistant to J. K. Gustafson in a thorough geological examination of the Magma mine. Much of the writer's subsequent independent work described in the present paper had its inception in ideas originated by Gustafson during that examination. Objectives of Geological Work at Magma Mine The objectives of geological work at Magma, as at operating vein mines of a similar nature, can be summarized as follows: 1. Direct assistance to the mining department by means of predictions as to the size, shape, grade, and location of ore bodies; by solution of fault problems and irregularities in the veins; by prepara-?ion of detailed ore-reserve estimates in specific areas; by keeping a complete record of the geology and assay results in the mine; and by guiding development work. In short, geology can aid in the realization of the prime purpose of the mining department, which is that of producing the greatest amount of ore in the most economical and expeditious manner possible. 2. Guidance for exploration, especially diamond drilling, in undeveloped areas of the mine. 3. Contributions to the understanding of the general geology of the deposit and its regional setting, including ore genesis, structure, and mineral relationships. (written discussion?).- I embrace ace the opportunity to take part in a discussion of Mr. Woodruff's paper because a successful discerning of what actually constitutes pet-roliferous areas from the geologists' standpoint is worthy of our endeavors, not only from the intellectual side, but also because it may lead, as Mr. Woodruff hopes, to the more certain establishment of principles that can be applied to other continents in exploiting them for petroleum. This discussion will also embrace the results of two other recent papers, one by Alexander W. McCoy and one by Maurice G. Mehl.1 Sources of Petroleum.-Mr. Woodruff is agreed that petroleum comes from plants and animals, or possibly from both, and that it has ac-cumulated by migration into reservoir rocks. These reservoir rocks must of course be porous to become catch basins for the oil and gas, and then, too, their present structures are variable, as they occur in anticlines, domes, terraces, etc. , The structures, he states, are more widespread than are the oil pools, and the same is true for the reservoir rocks. Pilot plant studies have been conducted on a variety of iron ores of differing composition and grain size to test their amenability to dry autogeneous grinding and dry magnetic concentration. A general description of the pilot plant and its equipment is given with particular reference to the Aerofall mill and the dry magnetic separators developed by the Ontario Research Foundation. Test results are reviewed in detail with emphasis on power consumption, mill speed, the use of ball charges, types of ores, moisture content, separator speeds, and design. In 1957 the Ontario Research Foundation installed a pilot plant (Fig. 1) for the study of dry autogenous grinding and dry magnetic concentration of iron ores. A 61/2-ft Aerofall mill was installed as the dry autogenous crushing and grinding medium. The Cavanagh fast drum and the Double Helix, two dry magnetic separators developed at Ontario Research Foundation, were also installed. Iron ore samples of 10 to 150 tons have been investigated. These ores varied widely in mineralogy and grain size. Taconite (-325 mesh), fine-grained magnetite (200 to 325 mesh), and medium-grained magnetites (65 to 150 mesh) have been treated with varying degrees of success. Lately, considerable research has also been conducted on the metamorphosed magnetite-hematite complexes of the Labrador Trough. Operational and metallurgical data have been compiled from these tests. The effects of ore type, air flow, mill speed, and ball charge on mill operation are discussed. Metallurgical data are also presented to illustrate the operation of the dry magnetic separators. PILOT PLANT DESCRIPTION Fig. 2 depicts the normal flowsheet used. Minus 6-in. ore from a vibrating feeder is fed to the 6%-ft Aerofall mill powered by a 50-hp 550-v induction motor. The main blower, a 25-hp 550-v fan rated at 7000 cfm, draws air through the mill. The Half-Moon mine, situated three miles west of the town of Pioche, exhibits geological features which are peculiar and interesting. The general formation in the vicinity of Pioche consists of a quartzite, usually covered with an overlying limestone containing strata of shale. In the camp itself, where the original mines are situated, the quartzite has been denuded, and the principal veins outcrop in this formation; to the west, the quartzite is again covered with limestone, containing thin strata of shale.

IN CHAPTER I it was shown that the approximate market value of the copper produced at the twelve big Porphyry mines from 1905 to 1931, inclusive, was $2,821,300,000. This represented the refined metal ready for shipment to the consumer. In addition, at least $50,000,000 worth of gold and silver had been produced, more than $30,000,000 coming from the Utah mine alone. Consequently, the revenues totaled about $2,871,300,000, as shown in Table 58. Society paid this sum for a given quantity of metal that it wanted for industrial use. Where did the money go? Who were the direct beneficiaries of the creation of this new wealth? These questions this chapter will answer in a general way. Because some necessary data are not available, an exact tabulation in detail can not be made, but Table 58 is believed to reflect with reasonable accuracy the disposition made of the aggregate income from the twelve operations. The word "operations" is used advisedly because the complexity of corporate relations precludes the possibility of picking out companies, as could be done if each enterprise were an independent entity such as Miami, for example. Some explanation of the table and some elaboration of the items under "Outgo" is desirable. In the first place, it is assumed that the sum of surplus current assets existing in various treasuries at the end of 1931 was substantially equivalent to the “new” money that actually was put into the enterprises as a group. Less than $20,000,000 in new capital was realized from securities sold by the Utah Copper Co., the remaining funds coming from earnings. In respect to some of the others, such as Chuquicamata, Inspiration, and Andes, the amount of new money was much greater. Environmental constraints can both delay and raise the cost of a major plant addition, often requiring a complete reevaluation of the plant site and the proposed project. In this case history, steps are presented which were followed in applying for environmental permits for a major addition to a lime plant. Methods are described for determining expected emission increases and for selecting the best control technology for each source. The description progresses through pre-application conferences with control agencies, the formal application procedure, computer modeling the air quality impact, and the methods followed in obtaining a favorable determination.

IN 1945 the Bagdad Copper Corp. decided to change from block caving to open-pit mining. By early 1948 the conversion was completed and production was increased from 1500 tons per day to 4000 tons per day. Open-pit mining costs decreased approximately 40 pet from the cost of producing ore by the underground method. At present one P & H model 1400 all-electric 4 1/2-yd shovel and one P & H model 1055 Diesel 3-yd shovel are used continuously for stripping. One 21/2yd North- west shovel handles the ore. Delivery of a new P & H 1055 electric shovel for stripping is expected this month. Blasthole drilling is performed with two Bucyrus model 22 and two Bucyrus model 27 churn drills.

A. Gittins and R. C. Gifkins (University of Mel-houvne)— Evidence from somewhat similar experiments to those described in this paper has led us to the conclusion that possibility 2) of the four listed on p. 319 is a description of what happens in grain boundary sliding. That is, sliding is limited by accommodation deformation, it being necessary to the Continuance of sliding that this accommodation should take place. An example of such accommodation, though probably not the most important, is fold formation at triple points. The evidence and arguments for this point of view are set out in Refs. 14 to 16. In particular, an experiment with a lead bicrys-tall5 seems to support point 2) rather than 3). In creep of this specimen it was found that at least 90 pct of the extension of a zone 0.3 mm wide at the boundary was supplied by sliding at the boundary. The sliding was localized in a region at the boundary very much smaller than 0.3 mm, in fact, in a region too narrow to resolve optically. In poly crystalline Specimens&apos; there appears to be a surface effect, as found by Rachinger," but it appears that this may not manifest itself at low strains. "Low strains" means <10 pct for a Pb-TI alloy, <2.5 pct for magnesium or "Magnox" A12 alloy, or <40 pct for a 0 brass. Up to this extension the sliding, measured by the mean vertical step at boundaries, is proportional to extension. We are able to say this with some confidence, since the error bars on our points are statistically derived. Our results would lead us to think that the error bars on other work, including that of Mullendore and Grant, are much too large at low strains to show this

In 1940 Schuhmann1 showed that the size distribution of a comminuted material can be expressed by the following empirical relationship: y = 100 (|f [i] where y is the cumulative percentage of material finer than size x, k is a size modulus, and a is a distribution modulus which is constant for a given material and machine. During the past few years, considerable emphasis has been given to the investigation of the extent of size reduction resulting from the expenditure of mechanical energy in crushing and grinding. Recently Schuhmann&apos; presented a derivation of the energy-size reduction relationship by postulating that comminution in a device such as a ball mill can be considered to be the summation of many single comminution events, each of which yields a size distribution of particles following the Schuhmann size distribution equation. Visitors frequently put the question to Kalgoorlie gold miners; "Why don&apos;t you concentrate your mining operations?" A mine may be drawing ore from over a hundred different working places which are spread out over several thousand feet of strike and on many different levels. The answer to this question is that "finished" can rarely be written for a section of the mine. The intricate web of mineralization in faults, shears and fractures is an endless puzzle, each solution opens up new avenues to be explored. After the last ore is taken from a stope, a program of drilling may continue for several weeks on different possibilities. Perhaps no ore is discovered and drilling is abandoned, but it is not unusual for another search to begin later in that same area on a new theory with successful results. Wherever a slightly richer mineralization is found, it is needed to "sweeten" the mill heads. Over seventy years ago gold was discovered in the dry wastes of Western Australia. Rich deposits of alluvial gold were found at first and as these were worked out they led to the discovery of the lode ores, which were leaner and harder to extract.

Diffusivity of bismuth in liquid Pb-Bi alloys has been measured by the capillary reservoir method as a function of temperature and composition. Fair agreement between theory and experiment is found for the measured diffusion coefficients and activation energies of diffusivity and viscosity in dilute lead alloys. The measured diffusion coefficients in the high bismuth alloys describe mass transport in special concentration gradients. THE study of diffusion in liquid metals has been restricted largely to the amalgams over small ranges of temperature and composition. In contrast to this, diffusion and transport of ions and molecules in aqueous and organic solvents have been studied extensively for the past 50 years. The general difficulty of measuring diffusion coefficients in both gases and liquids at high temperatures has been that of eliminating convection currents. Measuring techniques based on freezing and sectioning after the diffusion period1 are not particularly satisfactory because of the volume changes and segregation which occur during freezing. The most promising technique which is currently being developed for liquid metals is the capillary reservoir method. This eliminates convection currents from the diffusion zone and requires measurements only of the length and initial and final compositions of the alloy within the capillary. Anderson and Saddington&apos; have measured the diffusion coefficient of tungstate anions in aqueous Na,W04; Wane4&apos; and Hoffman- ave studied structure and self-diffusion in water and self-diffusion in mercury, respectively, by similar techniques. Selection of the Pb-Bi system for initial study was made for several reasons: I—It afforded a low temperature system for development of techniques which would be suitable for high temperature measurements in liquid iron. This research on diffusion in liquid iron is now in progress as a part of a general program on the rates and mechanisms of slag-metal reactions. 2—Activity data on liquid Pb-Bi alloys of all compositions are available from the emf meas- urements of Strickler and Seltz.9 3—Some data are available on the diffusion of bismuth into solid lead. The measurements on solid alloys were made by von Hevesy and Seith7 for the concentration range of 0 to 2 pct Bi. An appropriate solution to Fick&apos;s law (unsteady state) for the capillary reservoir has been found by considering the mass flow which passes through a unit area of surface on a slab of infinite thickness as a function of time. This is the first application of this solution to diffusion measurements, although a similar solution is available for identical boundary conditions.&apos; By analogy with heat conduction, the problem reduces to a perfectly insulated infinite slab at temperature C,, one surface of which is quenched to C, for all times, t. By comparison with solutions to Fick&apos;s law used in the solid state, this solution for liquids is similar to the Grube solution for solids, where the change in D with chemical composition is not taken into consideration. Difficulty is to be expected if large concentration gradients are employed and if the concentration gradients extend over an appreciable length of the capillary.

The constitution of the nickel-tungsten system has been studied by a number of investigators, the most recent of which are Ellinger and Sykes.1 On the basis of metallography, electrical resistivity and hardness measurements and some X ray diffraction work, they constructed a consitution diagram (Fig 1). Ellinger and Sykes report a0 for the alpha face-centered cubic phase (nickel saturated with tungsten) as 3.66?.‡ The gamma phase (tungsten saturated with nickel) is given as body-centered cubic, but no value of a. is recorded. At 43 pct tungsten by weight (approximately 20 at. pct) a beta phase is reported, but structure and lattice parameter are not known. Primarily on the basis of metallographic evidence, they conclude that beta is a new phase and rule out the possibility of formation of a superlattice since they- observe a new phase in the microstructure. Grube and Schlecht2 report an ordering reaction in a system similar to the Ni-W (Ni-Mo) and Harker3 has shown that NirMo forms a superlattice upon the pre-existing face-centered cubic lattice of the alpha phase. Elliniger arid Sykes observed a change in the diffraction pattern of a 4.3 pct W alloy upon aging and attributed it to the formation of a new phase. Thus, there appears to be some question as to the character of the beta phase reported by Ellinger and Sykes. The purpose of the present work is to determine precisely the structure and nature of the beta phase in the Ni-w system of X ray diffraction methods. Experimental Procedure One inch diameter ingots of 43.66 pct, 40.15 pct and 34.06 pct .tungsten by weight (19.8, 17.6 and 14.1 at. pct respectively) were melted and cast under vacuum from electrolytic nickel and pure wire filament grade tungsten. The ingots were soaked for 16 hr at 1300°C in a hydrogen atmosphere furnace, then swaged at this temperature and finally drawn to 0.020 in. diam wire. Some of the bar stock was retained in 1/2 in. diam rod for hardness and metallographic studies. Wire samples for diffraction work were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and subjected to the various solution and aging heat treatments in a hydrogen furnace. X ray photograms were taken in a Debeye-Slierrer camera using copper K radiation filtered by nickel foil. Results X RAY DIFFRACTION The lattice parameters of the alpha and gamma phases at saturation were determined by an X ray photogram of the 19.8 at. pct W alloy after solution heat treatment at a temperature well within the alpha-gamma range above the peritectoid temperature (17 hr at 1150°C—oil quenched). The alpha phase was found to be face-centeted cubic with a. of 3.594 ± 0.001?, while the gamma phase was determined as body-centered cubic with a. of 3.158 ± 0.001?. Exactly the same phases and parameters were ohtained with the 17.6 at. pct W alloy for the same solution heat treatment. The United States aims to achieve some modicum of energy self-sufficiency through means such as conservation, increased domestic oil and gas production, substitution by the electric utilities of coal or coaloil mixtures for oil and gas, and development of a viable synthetic liquid fuels industry. Coal&apos;s role in attaining this goal will necessitate doubling coal production by the end of the 1980&apos;s. And if the United States does in fact become the World&apos;s Saudi Arabia of coal, the total annual production to meet these domestic needs and export markets could double again by the year 2,000. As only a small portion of our Nation&apos;s reserves are recoverable by state-of-the-art surface mining methods, most of the coal produced in the future will have to be mined underground (Averitt, 1975). But this projected increase in coal demand is occurring in the face of a decade of radically decreasing productivity. Specifically, average worker productivity in underground coal mines has decreased from 14.2 tonnes (metric tons) per workershift in 1969 to 7.2 tonnes per worker-shift in 1979; and 95 percent of coal produced underground during this period was produced by room-and-pillar methods (U.S. Dept. of Energy, 1980). Although there is no complete agreement on the impact of recent Federal legislation, there is strong correlation between the dramatic decrease in productivity in underground coal mining and the implementation of the recent Federal mine health and safety regulations (U.S. Congress, 1969). A review of the wide range of coal mining research, development, and demonstration projects currently being funded by the federal government and by industry gives little encouragement for increasing worker productivity on room-and-pillar sections underground in the immediate future (Palowitch, 1978). Conversely, the opportunities for increasing production/productivity underground with longwall methods appear somewhat more encouraging. Although at least one longwall face in the U.S. did produce more than one million tonnes of coal in a single year, the national two-shift average production from one hundred or so longwall faces is about 1,000 tonnes per day (Huwood-Irwin Co., 1978 and Consolidation Coal Company, 1976). Clearly, there exists some real opportunities for improvement. One of these opportunities is to automate the cutter-loader.

The objectives of the investigation herein reported were to determine: (I) the S-curves for certain selected cast steels, (2) whether or not the published S-curves for wrought steels are satisfactory for use on cast steels of similar composition, and (3) to prepare hardenability curves of the selected cast steels. In order to make the final comparisons between cast and wrought steel more completely tangible, it was deemed advisable not only to determine S-curves for the steels submitted in the cast condition but also to roll some of the cast-steel test bars and determine comparison S-curves on such wrought material. This procedure eliminates the composition variable and makes it possible to reveal the differences resulting from plastic deformation of the cast structure in addition to providing the comparison with published data on wrought steels. Cast Steels The cast steels selected for the preparation of S-curves, or time-temperature transformation curves, were similar to S.A.E. series 1030, 2330, 4130 and 4330. Of these the 1030 was supplied by The Crucible Steel Casting Co., Cleveland, Ohio, and the other three by The Sawbrook Steel Castings Co., Lockland, Ohio. The steels were furnished in the as-cast condition. The manufacturers supplied the chemical analyses and the properties that could be obtained in the heat-treated condition—all of which is summarized in Table I. THE data here given were obtained by 1500 tests made, by the United Verde Copper Co. to determine the most economical air pressure for the operation of hammer drills under the varying conditions of use, and to investigate the variation in drilling speed at different air pressures Twelve models of drills were used at gage pressures ranging from 40 to 130 lb. No effort was made to harmonize theory and practice; but rather to formulate empiric rules that would cover the. average variation of the results obtained. These rules on the performance of hammer drills, based on the air pressure as the main variable, however, are not necessarily of universal application, but they apparently satisfy the results obtained in this series of tests. The drilling conditions at this property vary widely; an average of twenty-one machine shifts to a 3-ft. (0.9-m.) round has been found necessary in some of the development work, while an, advance of 56. ft. has been made in seven shifts in the "oxide" ground. This range pre-eludes the adoption of one type of drill as a standard; consequently almost every kind of hammer drill sold in this country has been tested. At present, sixteen models are in use, of which two types of the heavy (150 to 160 lb.) mounted drills, one of the light mounted drill, one stoper, and two hand plugging drills are considered as standard.
