Na operação do alto-forno é comum observar flutuações em seu comportamento, seguindo o ciclo de vazamento de gusa e escória. O acumulo de liquido no cadinho e sua influência no aumento da força hidrostática são as principais causas dessa flutuação.O cadinho é uma parte crucial na operação do alto-forno por muitas razões. No entanto, por ser o local de acumulo de gusa e escória, este deve ter volume suficiente e facilitar uma drenagem sem distúrbios. Por isto, o estado do redutor/combustível, chamado “homem morto” desempenha uma importante função. Este trabalho apresenta uma breve revisão sobre os principais indicadores do estado interno do homem morto no cadinho do alto-forno.

A mathematical model of heat transfer and solidification for a continuous casting of round billets was developed. The water flux density of the secondary cooling zone was experimentally measured, using an apparatus in industrial scale with two types of nozzles, flat jet and full cone jet. The profiles of water distribution were applied on the mathematical model. The results showed that the water distribution is not uniform in both longitudinal and angular directions owing to the unevenness of the spray and to the curvature effect of the round billet. This non-uniformity causes important variation of the heat transfer coefficients and superficial temperature of the billet, especially in the first cooling zones, where the temperature is higher. The mathematical model was used to simulate a change of nozzle type in the first cooling zone. The results showed that the heat flux and superficial temperature variations were reduced with a full cone jet nozzle in comparison with the flat jet nozzles.

After almost half a century of experience in using DRI/HBI in electric arc furnaces (EAFs), and taking into account the decrease of natural gas cost in the USA, it is interesting to revisit some trends and controversial issues around this alternative iron source. This paper reviews aspects like the evolution of iron ore quality and its influence on EAF operation; DRI stockpiling and transport, regarding the risk for selfcombustion; optimum charge design; cold DRI/HBI charging (fifth hole, bucket, transporter); hot charging (ways and results); carbon content, metallization and silica in DRI/HBI, and its influence on EAF operation and performance; oxygen / carbon balance; chemical energy and DRI/HBI charge.

O processo de lingotamento contínuo em uma aciaria elétrica é responsável pela solidificação do aço líquido proveniente das ações de fusão e refino no forno elétrico a arco, e ajuste de composição química no forno panela. Tal processo é crítico, pois, há eclosão de defeitos que estão associados às etapas anteriores como também da própria solidificação. Alguns destes defeitos são: trincas, romboidade, segregações, porosidade, dentre outros. Tais defeitos podem vir a desclassificar o tarugo quanto a sua qualidade, o que prejudica o volume e custos da produção, afeta consideravelmente a distribuição de material para a laminação e diminuindo a produtividade. Dentre os defeitos expostos no texto, porosidade foi classificada como uma das principais causas, na desclassificação do tarugo. O artigo a seguir analisou o fenômeno de nucleação do defeito, de forma a desenvolver ações corretivas, por meio de ferramentas de gerenciamento. O resultado alcançado através das medidas tomadas permitiu a redução de defeitos, na ordem de 50%.

Un objetivo de seguridad y calidad en los moldes de la colada continua de Siderar fue la de tener un menisco estable y controlado. A lo largo de los distintos periodos de inversiones y mejoras, el control de nivel de Siderar logro como objetivo contener su variación de nivel de acero en el molde en un rango de variación menor a +/-2 mm y con una velocidad de cambio inferior a 1,5 m/segundos. Esta etapa trajo una relativa mejora en los aspectos mencionados (calidad y continuidad operativa) pero el hecho de tener como sistema de medición de nivel un sistema radiactivo (fuente Co60 y contador de centelleo) mantenía serias limitaciones en ambos rubros dado que este sistema no diferencia la interface escoria /polvo colador con el menisco de acero. Este trabajo tratará de mostrar y contar las tareas de desarrollo y aplicación de esta nueva tecnología, hoy vigente en la nueva Colada Continua N° 2 (CCD2) y en etapa de puesta en marcha de la CCD1.

A carga metálica do Forno Elétrico a Arco (FEA) representa bem mais que a matéria prima da rota semi integrada, representa o ponto de equilíbrio financeiro de uma operação siderúrgica sustentável. O fiel da balança econômica de uma operação baseada em um FEA baseia-se no custo do emprego metálico. Deste modo é razoável pensar que, escolher a combinação de sucatas que irá compor o mix de metálicos que abastecerá o FEA é uma tarefa que vai além das limitações técnicas do fenômeno de fusão e refino primário no referido reator. O emprego de resíduos metálicos diversos representa uma medida de sustentabilidade para a indústria siderúrgica, tanto sob a ótica ambiental, dado o reaproveitamento do resíduo, como na perspectiva econômica, haja vista a redução substancial nos custos de transformação. Testes realizados no FEA da CSN UPV possibilitaram avaliar os aspectos positivos e negativos do emprego de um resíduo metálico descartado durante a produção de cimentos. Os resultados encontrados demostram que, sob a perspectiva técnica, os aspectos positivos sobressaem aos negativos e, portanto, O FEA representa uma ótima alternativa para o consumo sustentável do referido resíduo. Uma avaliação econômica aponta uma redução de custo do emprego metálico da ordem de 17%.

A aciaria 1 da Usiminas Ipatinga é composta por 03 convertedores BOF e uso de ventaneiras para promover a melhor mistura do banho. No intuito de garantir e melhorar a estabilidade operacional da etapa sopro na produção, foi iniciado uma séria de desenvolvimentos na lança de oxigênio através da aplicação da tecnologia Slagless® com objetivos de melhorar a formação de escória, evitar cascão de lança, evitar cascão no sistema OG (recuperação de gases) e aumentar a disponibilidade de lanças através do aumento de sua vida. Os resultados apresentados são extremamente favoráveis, pois após a implementação da tecnologia, todos os objetivos foram atingidos associado com uma vida extremamente elevada do bico de lança, agora chamado cartucho, garantindo estabilidade e conforto operacional para a equipe da aciaria 1 da Usiminas Ipatinga.

Na conjuntura atual, o foco dos produtores de aço tem se voltado fortemente para a otimização dos recursos e do tempo. O AOD é um convertedor de aços inoxidáveis. A intensa agitação do banho obtida pela lança de topo e injeção de gases por ventaneiras geram projeções ao longo do processo com formação e acúmulo de cascões na parte interna do cone superior. O excesso de cascão prejudica as operações de carregamento e vazamento das corridas. Visando reduzir o acúmulo de cascão, foi desenvolvido para o AOD da Aperam South America, a partir do conceito da lança Slagless um módulo de pós-combustão. Os furos de passagem de oxigênio deste módulo ficam posicionados na região onde se alojam as projeções de metal e escória. Os resultados iniciais obtidos com a Slagless Clean Up desenvolvida mostram uma evolução na qualidade da limpeza da boca do AOD, facilitando a operação de carregamento do forno. Ao longo do período foram feitas alterações na abertura dos furos de pós-combustão para adequação das vazões de sopro. O projeto, agora já na sua fase de conclusão, deverá passar por ajustes na quantidade e na distribuição dos furos do módulo de pós-combustão.

A significant amount of metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from iron ore pellets. To control the quality of pellets and to optimise pellet production, characterisation of both green and fired pellets is required. Optical image analysis (OIA) allows identification of different minerals, binder, remaining fluxes and porosity within pellets.For proper identification of the mineralogy, porosity and texture in pellets a high magnification is required, therefore each individual image covers only a very small portion of the pellet. At the same time the characterisation of pellets requires that the whole pellet is represented as a single object, so the size of the resulting overall image at high magnification can make it difficult to handle. A solution to this problem has been implemented within the CSIRO OIA package Mineral4 by combining images at different levels. Namely, to average out local irregularities, individual frames can be stitched during imaging into larger MosaiX images. Mineral4 further combines these MosaiX images into a single panorama image of the whole pellet.The proposed procedures allow the calculation of mineral and porosity spatial distributions, local gradients and abundance graphs based on the distance from the centre of the pellet. The cohesive zone in the blast furnace is largely affected by the softening and melting behaviour of ferrous burden because of its vital role in the blast furnace process. The Visual High Temperature Methodology (VHTM) has been given to study the softening and melting behaviour of sinter, two kinds of lump ores and acid pellet intuitively. Before softening, both two kinds of lump ore swelled and more serious for lump ore B because of its denser structure than lump ore A. The softening and melting temperature intervals are different from one another and this phenomenon contributed to the gas permeability of ore layer in the cohesive zone since the ‘ore window’ has formed. Besides, the softening and melting behaviour of mixed burdens have been studied, where it has been found that the softening and melting characteristics of mixed burden A (consisting of sinter and lump ore A) is better than mixed burden B (consisting of sinter and lump ore B) and mixed burden C (consisting of sinter and acid pellet) despite the poorest characteristics of lump ore A. The reason is that the high temperature interactivity between lump ore A and sinter is much better than lump ore B and acid pellet. The high temperature interactivity is mainly influenced by the chemical compositions, porosity and contact condition. A research team at the Iron and Steelmaking department at Primetals Technologies has established new upgrading measures for improving the efficiency of the beneficiation process in ironmaking plants, relying largely on pre-existing equipment. After the upgrade, the iron content in the final iron ore concentrate was shown to be significantly higher. Remarkably, the costs for employing the respective measures are surprisingly low.This case study is based on a Kazakh iron and steel producer, whose beneficiation process is currently generating a magnetite concentrate with a final iron content of 65.65 per cent. The study shows that the implementation of Primetals Technologies’ intelligent modification measures to the current beneficiation process, the realisation of more effective dewatering, and the utilisation of an innovative binder lead to an increased iron content in the resulting pellets, reaching a concentration of 69.17 per cent (iron ore concentrate) and 66.5 per cent (pellets).The current operation consists of three closed circuit grinding stages, four stages of low intensity magnetic separation, vacuum disc filters and straight-grate pelletising. By dividing the slurry after the second stage of grinding and the third stage of low intensity magnetic separation, it is possible to divert the more iron-rich fines before they would enter the third grinding stage and the fourth stage of magnetic separation. This then reduces the load on the existing third stage ball mill. Afterwards, the ground material is treated in an additional low intensity magnetic separator and mixed with the previously diverted fraction of the fines. An improved filtration procedure, combined with the application of a highly sophisticated binder, further reduces the amount of additives needed, so that a genuine direct reduced (DR)-grade iron concentrate is produced as a result.All laboratory, pilot and pelletising test work was executed at Primetals Technologies’ laboratories in Austria.CITATION:Martens, J, Petzold, L and Hiebl, B, 2017. ArcelorMittal Mining has a global portfolio of 14 iron ore operating units across Brazil, Bosnia, Canada, Kazakhstan, Liberia, Mexico, Ukraine and the United States. Iron ore products include concentrate for sintering and pelletising, pellets, directly shipped fines and lump ore. This paper presents an overview of ArcelorMittal iron ore mines including iron ore typologies and the annual production of each unit. With the depleting iron reserves and difficult market conditions, precision in separation efficiency is of utmost importance. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure. Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017. Many different approaches have been used in the past to characterise iron ore sinter mineralogy to predict sinter quality and elucidate the impacts of iron ore characteristics and process variables on the mechanisms of sintering. Characterisation techniques include optical image analysis and point counting, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the objectives of the measurement. It is generally acknowledged that silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is very important to the quality of the sinter produced; however, strict definitions of the phases and textures of SFCA are not generally agreed. This paper summarises the state-of-the-art in sinter characterisation applied in Australia by both academics and industrial researchers. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been utilised in the oil and gas industry for over 60 years. The technology was recently identified as having potential value in iron ore, where latent bound moisture may affect ore handling even after dewatering and extraction. The first step in introducing this technology to iron ore involved laboratory tests on drill core samples. These results established the parameters for a downhole borehole magnetic resonance (BMR) tool for iron-rich environments, which was subsequently developed. A major challenge involved shrinking what is a very large tool in the oil industry to a slimhole, lightweight, 1-man deployable mining tool.Of primary concern was the ability to measure the very fast transverse relaxation times (T2s) seen in the lab results on iron ore samples. Iron creates local field gradients that significantly decrease the T2 times. As a result, the BMR tool had to be able to measure T2s in the range of hundreds of microseconds, a level not required in clastic sedimentary formations. The choice of T2 cut-offs in iron ore is critical to successfully separating the free and bound fluids. The industry has typically focused on T2 cut-offs in clastics and carbonates, but not in systems with high iron content. Using core analysis results (poro-perm and NMR) we were able to verify the BMR response. The T2 cut-offs were determined from NMR core analysis and then applied to the logs so as to provide a continuous, calibrated permeability log.Field results that highlight the challenge involved in logging in iron-rich environments are presented, as well as some minimum requirements for a successful BMR log. Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. There is significant value at stake in the mining industry from the implementation of new technologies that support the enhanced profitability and sustainability of mines. However, in order to realise this value, new technology must be implemented in a way that is both effective and sustainable. The industry has a mixed history for technology implementation that provides fertile ground for understanding what is necessary for innovation to deliver value. This paper describes early stage research investigating why this is so, with the aim of improving how to deliver value. Several case studies are provided covering both successful and unsuccessful technology interventions.
