"Abstract -This paper describes fire assaying and ‘high tech’ alternatives for gold analysis, including advantages and disadvantages of each method. These ‘high tech’ methods include INAA (instrumental neutron activation), aqua regia digestion/AA (atomic absorption), GFAA (graphite furnaceatomic absorption) or ICP/MS (inductively coupled plasma emission mass spectrometry) and a combination of cyanidation with AA, GFAA or ICP/MS methods.Fire assay remains the stalwart among analytical methods for gold but, even with its multiple analytical finishes, is not fool-proof for recovering 100% of the gold present. Consumers of assays should not blindly trust the assay results without consideration of quality control data. Laboratories can and do make mistakes. Some of these can be easily discovered if you do your own due diligence. All these measures should ensure that gold analysis values from successive campaigns and from different laboratories meet acceptable levels of accuracy and precision, and can be correlated together, particularly when they occur in neighboring holes. This is essential just as much for prospect evaluation as for project feasibility."

The Olympic Dam copper/uranium deposit was discovered in 1975 and subsequently commenced production in 1988 at a rate of 1.5 Mtpa using the sublevel open stoping mining method. In the following five years the operation underwent two optimisation programs that have increased mine output to the current rate of 3.4 Mtpa of ore. The pre-expansion requirements were annual development of approximately 10 000 m and the placement of around 500 000 m 3 /yr of cemented backfill. Previous to 1995 all hoisting was carried out by the Whenan shaft. The Robinson shaft was commissioned during that year to hoist increasing development mullock tonnages and to allow for increased ore hoist via the Whenan system. In 1996 WMC committed to expanding the output of the operation from 85 000 tpa (1996/97 budget) copper metal to 200 000tpa. The corresponding increase in mine ore production requires expansion to a nominal rate of 9.0 Mtpa. To achieve these increased tonnages, major hardware installations will include sinking of a third shaft capable of hoisting in excess of 9.5 Mtpa, a rail haulage horizon utilising automatic trains, expansion of the existing backfill plant to a production capacity of over 1.8 million m 3 /yr, increasing long term development rates to 15 000 m/yr and increasing the production drilling and blasting rates in line with the higher stope production output. This paper provides detail into the intended hardware (shafts, equipment, etc) of the mining system, and outlines the intended long-term operation and management of the operation. Of particular note is the background requirement of ensuring existing production targets are met to provide critical cashflows into the project during the period of expansion.

Coal exports are forecast to grow strongly, so that coal is likely to remain very important to Australia for the foreseeable future. However there is no sign that prices or profitability will rise of their own accord. Therefore the intense squeeze on costs will continue for the foreseeable future. This will mean lower manning, more outsourcing and probably an increasing rate of company attrition. The scrutiny given to model predictions of pit-lake water quality has focused attention on the uncertainty associated with long-term predictions. Although comparison of probabilistic predictive modeling of water quality in existing pit lakes indicates that short-term predictions can bracket most parameters, uncertainties in wall-rock reactions and the stability of groundwater composition and climate remain unquantified. This overview of the uncertainties associated with longer-term predictions is presented as support for those considering policy decisions that must be made in the absence of reliable estimates of future conditions.

Cyanide speciation and behavior have been examined at three active heap leach operations, three heaps undergoing rinsing, and three sites with cyanide contaminated groundwater, all in the southwestern U.S. Data from these studies demonstrate that strong cyanometallic complexes of iron and cobalt can play ?an important role in cyanide behavior throughout the lifetimes of heap leach operations. In active circuits, we find evidence that significant amounts of cyanide combine with iron and cobalt to form strong cyanometallic complexes, and that these species can be adsorbed, probably onto iron hydroxides, or precipitated as insoluble cyanometallic compounds. When spent heaps are rinsed, the release of this cyanide is likely controlled by the slow kinetics of desorption from, or dissolution of, solids that have gone largely uncharacterized. We find evidence that strong cyanometallic complexes can give rise to transient free cyanide in some settings by rapid photo dissociation where heap rinse effluent is exposed to sunlight in open channels or translucent sample bottles. Thus, these species can complicate the ,preparation of spent heaps for decommissioning, even where regulatory standards ?are based on weak acid dissociable cyanide. There is a critical need for information on the form and stability of adsorbed and precipitated cyanide in spent ore heaps, on the concentrations of strong cyanometallic complexes in mineral processing effluents -particularly the complexes of cobalt, and on the natural attenuation of iron and cobalt cyanometallic complexes in both surface and subsurface waters.

The tragedy of the Moura No. 2 incident has lost much of its emotional mileage for those organisations that thrive on loss and suffering. However, for the families, workers, mine owners and operators in the Queensland underground coalfields, the challenge of delivering a positive outcome, though well underway, is in its infancy. The E h potential during of a iron reducing bacteria such as Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum (A.M.) can be predicted by a growth model. It also reflects the adsorption of Fe+2 Cu+2 and Mn +2 ions, that can be incorporated into magnetic material called magnetosomes. The Ferric ion concentration during controlled growth of Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans (T.F.) is a function of the bacteria population curve, while A. M. ferrous ion concentration is a function of the integral of the population curve. Charting of the redox potential of T.F. during batch oxidation of refractory ores such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can be helpful to establishing onset and rate the bulk bio-oxidation rate. The onset of biooxidation is marked by an increase in Fe +3 ions that can be correlated with increased growth due to adsorbed electrons.

Until the suspension of conventional operations in 1996, the White Pine Mine was the second-largest active underground copper mine in the United States, underlying an area of approximately 30 km2 (13 sq. miles) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mine operator intends to initiate in-stope solution copper mining by circulating a solution (lixiviant) of mine water, sulfuric acid and ferric iron through rubblized ore. As planned, the solution would be retired in the mined-out stopes following completion of the solution-mining activities. Investigations into the fate of the retired solution indicated that the solution, through time, would change from an acidic, metal-rich solution to a near-neutral, reducing solution containing much lower concentrations of metals. Investigations included reaction-path modeling (EQ3/6) and laboratory and in-mine tests. The combination of neutralization and reduction will result in precipitation of most metals, primarily as metallic sulfates, chlorides and sulfides.

It is recognised that presplitting is a special case in blasting which requires the reduction of conventional explosive pressures in order to avoid excessive rock damage. Two routes to achieving this are the use of reduced density explosives or the practice of decoupling the explosive from the blasthole walls. Applications of two such systems in large diameter, deep blastholes are described. Both systems were tested in presplits alongside sections charged with decks of conventional explosives.

Due to unfavorable geological condition, excessive deformation of mine drifts occurred in a large underground copper and nickel mine. In searching for a solution, a comprehensive underground monitoring program was implemented and the opening convergence and the surrounding rock deformation were monitored. A large number of field data were collected and thoroughly analyzed. The convergence and deformation as function of time and depth were determined and a rock stability index was proposed. Based on the deformation-time and deformation-depth relations, critical deformation times and locations were identified and defined as characteristic values to be used for mine opening and support designs. The characteristic values are critical in the application of two-step supporting system, and the determination of support parameters. The application of the method developed in this study has demonstrated that this practical approach in support design and installation is effective. With the two-step supporting system, a long-term drift stability can be achieved in the mine.

The effect of H3BO3 and BaCl2 chemicals pre-treatment on the electrical properties of the minerals is examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed with the determined charge, dielectric constant, and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. The paper will also discuss the unique royalty and taxation structures developed for the Red Dog Mine Agreement as well as environmental issues.
