"Abstract - As a contribution to the World Minerals Geoscience Database Project, an index-level database comprising information on 142 SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits and occurrences was constructed in Microsoft Access 95 format. Although consisting of only basic information, the compilation, with full referencing of all data, is possibly the largest non-corporate SEDEX Pb-Zn database in the world. It thus provides an opportunity to make geoscience queries of SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits on a scale not previously available. This report provides a summary of the results of a few such queries both as a contribution to a better understanding of SEDEX lead-zinc deposits and as a demonstration of what even such a simple database can offer.During the compilation process, it became apparent that SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits could be assigned to one of the following three sub-types: Type 1 (53.5% of total) in which sulfide minerals are the only exhalative components; Type 2 (33.1%) in which the exhalative components are sulfides plus chert, siderite/ankerite, and/or barite; Type 3 (13.4%) which contains any components of Types 1 and 2 plus abundant iron-oxide minerals (commonly magnetite) and/or is associated with iron oxide-rich sedimentary rocks.Highlights of systematic queries of the database reveal that:1. a majority (84%) of the world’s SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits are not underlain by a discordant footwall feeder zone or vent complex;2. 63.6% of deposits occur in Proterozoic strata followed by a second peak in the Devonian (16.8%). Of those in the Proterozoic, 83% of Type 3 deposits occur in the Gondwanaland supercontinent, whereas only 42% of Type 2 and 39% of Type 1 are located in this large paleo-landmass;3. median (Pb+Zn) grades in Types 1 and 2 fall between 9% and 10% with a majority clustering within this range. Type 3 grades, however, range from ~1% to ~20% (Pb+Zn) with a median of 5%; 4. median size of Type 3 deposits is ~33 Mt, whereas Type 1 and 2 median sizes are ~7 Mt and ~8 Mt, respectively.The report concludes with a brief discussion of how an index-level database such as this can be used in conjunction with other, similar databases to reveal interesting and instructive relationships for guiding both research and exploration."

"To clarify the feasibility of alkoxides and acetylacetonates as precursors for laser CVD of metal oxides, vapors of tantalum or titanium alkoxides and zirconium acetylacetonate were irradiated by KrF excimer laser and deposits were characterized by XRD and XPS measurements. As for tantalum and titanium, non-stoichiometric crystalline oxides grew nearly phototropically, however, zirconium oxides deposited showed only halo-pattern by XRD measurements. Electric conductivity measurements of tantalum oxides implied the improvement of the insulating properties by the addition of activated oxygen to the ambient.IntroductionThere has been renewed increasing attention to the metallic oxide thin films because ofits promising usefulness in many applications, such as high-Tc superconductors and ferroelectric devices. A variety of thin film preparation techniques have been studied such as sputtering, chemical liquid deposition (sol-gel and metalorganic decomposition), pulsed laser deposition and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Among them, we think CVD is the most promising method because it offers a high controllability of morphology and good step coverage at relatively high growth rate. Preparation of oxide films by CVD can be achieved using a precursor containing metallic element and oxygen containing gas such as N20 at the same time. However, metalorganic (MO) compounds which contain both metallic element and oxygen, directly bonded to metallic element, seems to be more favorable because some of MO has a good properties for CVD such as a rather high vapor pressure, stability in ambient and low toxicity."

This paper outlines the mechanism of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and how it can cause premature failure of rock bolts. SCC occurs due to the progressive development and growth of cracks in the surface of a metal, and it is caused by the combined effects of stress and a corrosive environment affecting susceptible metals and alloys. It can occur in most metals including stainless steel. It is not a new phenomenon, but its effect on rock bolts has only been recognised recently.Rock bolt failures caused by SCC appear to be brittle failures which occur at less than the ultimate tensile strength of the bolt. In the mining industry, SCC failures of rock bolts can occur a few months, or after many years of exposure to stress and a corrosive environment. If SCC of rock bolts is suspected, then the rock bolts should be examined by a metallurgist, and steps should be taken to reduce the problem.

"VIBRONICS, INC. instrumented and monitored a residential structure for response to,blasting at aMidwestern surface coal operation. The residence was owned by the mining company and was extremely close to the operation. Blasting was conducted within 120 feet (36.5 meters) of the test structure. Up to seventeen (17), four (4)-channel seismographs were used during the monitoring period. The basement walls and floor were monitored. VIBRONICS, INC. also monitored a brick chimney in the basement and attic. Structural responses were then compared to outside vibration measurements taken in the soil near the foundation."

Cyanides are utilized in many industrial applications including preparation of chemical intermediates, electroplating, and' mining, Cyanide has been utilized in chemical warfare operations as well Cyanide is also synthesized and found in plants and animals including man where it is thought to perform multiple functions. A variety of enzymes are known to detoxify cyanide under different conditions. These include rhodanese, 3-mercaptopyruvate-sulfur transferase, thiosulfate reductase, cystathionaseand albumin. Cyanide appears tQ exert its toxic effect primarily by inhibiting cytochrome oxidase? although other enzymes are also inhibited. Therapeutic antagonist categories to treat cyanide include methemoglobin formers such as nitrite, sulfane-sulfur donors such as thiosulfate, metal salts or complexes such as cobalt and cyanohydrin-forming compounds such as dihydroxyacetone or alpha keto-glutaric acid. Advantages and disadvantages of each category will be discussed. Newer compounds under development have been found that may allow for prophylactic therapy for cyanide poisoning with minimal side effects; In addition, portable co-oximetry devices may provide real-time measurement of cyanide in field units.

"The effect of yttrium addition on the oxidation behavior of Fe3Al intermetallic compound was investigated in the range of temperature 800 to 1100 °C in 0.2 atm 02 in terms of oxidation rate and oxide adhesion. The oxidation rate of alloys, Fe-14.3 wt% Al and Fe-14.1 wt% Al-0.3 wt% Y, was nearly identical and the parabolic rate constant calculated as a function of temperature is Kp=5128 exp[-39506(cal/mol)/RT] mg2/cm4 hr.Rapid cooling and ultrasonic stress tests were carried out to test adhesion of scale formed on the alloys. While the oxide layer formed on the Fe-Al alloy without Y was found to be fragile and detached easily during the tests, the oxide layer formed on the Fe-Al alloy containing Y was protective, dense, and adhesive. The following two mechanisms were proposed to explain the adhesion improvement of Ah03 formed on the Fe3Al containing yttrium : (1) the addition of yttrium decrease generation of growth stress in alumina scale because the preferential diffusion of yttrium through grain boundary in alumina scale prevent internal oxidation of Al, one of main causes of growth stress, and (2) the second phase formed on the oxide scales prevents crack propagation through the scales, leading to better mechanical stability of the oxide scales.IntroductionIron aluminides have attracted the attention of many researchers as a candidate for use at high temperature because of their excellent oxidation resistance due to the formation of protective alumina scale. In order to resist aggressive environments at elevated temperatures, oxide scale formed on iron-uluminum alloy must satisfy the following three requirements : (1) thermodynamic stability (2) slow growth rate (3) adherence on substrate. According to Wallwork and Hed [l], the most suitable alloys for high temperature application are Fe, Ni, and Co alloys with the protection of Si02, Cr203, and Ah03 scales. While chromium oxide can vaporize as Cr03 above 1000 °C and silicon oxide may form low melting silicate [2,3], Alz03 has a high melting point and is the most stable among the three oxides thermodynamically [6]. In this respect, iron aluminides forming alumina seem to be most suitable for use at high temperature. However, alumina scale formed on the iron aluminum alloys tends to be easily spalled during oxidation due to the combination of growth stress and thermal stress."

"Al-Li binary alloys with nominal Li contents of0.15, 1.1and2.8 (in wt%) were aged naturally at room temperature for two months, aged at low temperatures ( 65 and 1 OOEC) for up to 2 months and aged artificially at 190EC for 4 days after water quenching to 25EC following solutionizing at 530EC for 20 minutes. Ageing behavior of these binary alloys were studied by Vicker's Hardness measurements and DSC thermal analysis. Thermal analysis results indicate the formation of GP zones of Al-Li system in Al-2.8wt%Li binary alloy. In the same alloy, rapid quenching from one phase region (a) gives rise to precipitation of small o' particles in a matrix (a) with still high supersaturation. During ageing of this alloy below lOOEC an additional transformation, i.e., GP zone formation occurs proceeding at a very high rate which is described on the basis of the theoretical analysis for the quenched Al-Li system proposed by Khachaturyan et al [6]. Ageing at temperatures below 11 OEC takes place slowly by the formation of small d' particles of lower thermal stability than the quenched-in d precipitates in addition to GP zones resulting in an increase in hardness compared to water quenched samples. During artificial ageing, GP zones transform by dissolution to d' precipitates while d' particles already in the microstructure coarsen during under aged condition at which hardness increases with time till peak aged condition.IntroductionIn binary Al-Li alloys the d' (Al3Li) fully coherent internally ordered inetastable phase of Li2 structure with a=0.4038d [1-5] forms homogeneously between 120 and 190EC before the formation of stable d' (A!Li) phase and cause the superior mechanical properties. This is due to an appreciable age hardening effect resulting because of the d' precipitation during ageing [1]. The response of d' to decomposition and its formation kinetics have been studied previously and it is believed that the decomposition of the a-supersaturated solid solution occurs in a two stage process; i.e., a 6 d' (Al3Li) 6 d(A!Li). Khachturyan et al [6] theoretically investigated precipitation of the d' phase and gave an interpretation of the transformation paths of the quenched Al-Li alloys. They predict that the disordered supersaturated solid solution congruently orders, and then the uniformly ordered solution decomposes into ordered regions that differ in Li-content. Finally, ordered d' phase forms in the disordered matrix."

Much attention in controlling blast vibrations has been centred on the probability of causing damage to structures in the area adjacent to where blasting is carried out. In most cases these structures are residential properties and the effect of the vibrations on the occupiers has not been studied to any great extent. This paper looks at the sources of disturbance caused by blasting and their psychological effect. A comparison of ground vibration levels for compliance is examined within the framework of structural and human response.

In this paper we report on the use of microseismic monitoring techniques to investigate the fracturing process associated with longwall mining. The study was carried out at three mines in Australia and concentrated on some major concerns of the mines, such as failure patterns and growth rate associated with mining progress, their implications to water ingress and gas emissions, caving processes in the goaf and precursors of roof falls. The results have shown that a zone of shear fracturing has occurred further ahead of the longwall face than predicted using conventional longwall geomechanics theory. Failure patterns in the roof and floor vary from mine to mine and this appears to be dominated by geological structures. The reaction of faults, the formation of fractures which allow gas emissions and precursors roof falls have also observed. Results from this work have opened up new understanding of longwall caving processes and proved that microseismic monitoring is a very useful technique for studies of longwall geomechanics and hazard controls.

The studies [1-3] have revealed that in case of electrically conducting media the influence of electromagnetic body forces on the liquid can be a rather effective mean of such a control. The current paper investigates some physical conformities governing the behaviour of binary liquid metal systems with a immiscibility region under electromagnetic processing designated to produce ingots with homogeneous structure.The main idea of the proposed method rests upon a concept that the electromagnetic forces in the melt are similar to gravity forces due to buoyancy effects in space and have a selective ability to influence the melt components dependent on their conductivity. In crossed electric E and magnetic B fields (fig.I) each component of the medium is influence by the force density f = jXB, where the current density j is determined by the conductivity a of the component j = -oE. When this force is directed parallel or non-parallel to the gravity vector, the buoyancy of suspended particles can be controlled accordingly.This phenomenon allows one to create a situation in binary system, when the sums of all mass forces (gravity and electromagnetic) affecting every component are equal, and two components are under conditions of equilibrium with respect to each other. These conditions are called quasiweightlessness, which is generated in the melt by the electromagnetic forces."

New mechanical and pneumatic-mechanical flotation machines with axial impellers have been developed. Industrial tests show that these machines ensure lower power expenditure (on flotation) by 1.5-2.0 times as compared with reference machines (with the same or improved technological indices). Application of the newly developed axial impeller, with these advantages, is possible in any volume chambers of type OK, Dorr-Oliver, Wemko etc.

Narrow vein metalliferous mining in the UK has a long history, but there are only two small gold operations at present (Clogau and Gwynfynydd). Since the introduction of raiseboring 30 years ago there have been many operational and mechanical design improvements in the raiseboring machine, its reamers and associated cutters. These have now made the technology of raiseboring a routine and practical operation within the underground mining world. Over the last decade these advances have been aided by the introduction of robust automation packages which have allowed unattended drilling and reaming, real time performance monitoring and enhancement and the rapid diagnostic investigation of mechanical and electrical abnormalities. The constraint to higher raiseboring performance is now the drill string. However when it comes to a cost-effective solution of applying the high drill string torque and tension necessary for the next step change in performance, designers have æhit the wallÆ. Whilst carbon fiber reinforced plastic composites with abrasive resistant sheaths may offer a solution, the limit of conventional steel, drill string technology has been reached. This limit to advancement is however based on the drill string being in tension and alternative solutions may exist by literally turning the raiseboring paradigm on its head. This paper describes the story of a small Australian company engaged in the design and manufacture of mechanical excavation machines, two Australian raiseboring contractors and three Australian mines going against tradition and pushing down rather than pulling up.

A case study of a systematic approach to grinding circuit steady-state optimization is presented. After overall review of the flowsheet, two circuits were prepared for detailed testing. Functional performance analysis was chosen as the primary modelling system, and on this basis a quality assurance program for data gathering was implemented. A number of circuit design and operating variables were experimented with statistical analysis of plant test results revealed relationships previously unquantifiable by any other modelling technique. Improvements in classification system and mill grinding efficiencies were demonstrated and significant energy cost savings thus realized.

This investigation involves laboratory testing and stability analysis of paste fill at the Golden Giant Mine. Site-cast samples are tested in unconfined, confined, and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression. Pore pressures during shear and consolidation characteristics are measured to determine both drained and undrained shear strength parameters and assess the potential for undrained loading. With a title like that it's no wonder he believes in empowerment. His topic today is "The Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Empowerment Techniques." DAVID HUTH: Empowerment and its benefits are a desirable alternative to the traditional management structure. The difference between the two is the amount of decision- making authority and responsibility given to individuals by a supervisor. Just what is empowerment and how does it work? Empowerment is relinquishing to individuals the authority and responsibility to make daily decisions. Can everyone be empowered? What if they make a wrong decision? Will I empower myself out of a job? These are questions that all managers have when they hear the word empowerment. In today's fast-paced and high-pressure business environment, the old way of managing people must be replaced with a new approach. No longer can we, as managers, make all the decisions. The increased work loads due to downsizing, consolidation, and synergies have stretched us too thin. What about our employees? How can we motivate them into the high-performance teams that our companies are demanding? What possibly could satisfy both these issues? The solution to these problems can be solved with the power of employee empowerment. Employee empowerment will not only lessen the load on managers but will build teamwork, motivation, and pride into the employees who work for the managers who use it. American business was rudely awakened in the early 1980s when the Japanese companies not only caught up to American companies but literally flew by them. America was fat, dumb, and happy after World War II. Why wouldn't they be? They had all the factories. Everyone else had to rebuild. So for 40 years American business lounged in the limelight of very little true competition. But times change. Unfortunately, American business did not. Now the cry to perform in the new global economy has come down from the corporate boardrooms. Down through the ranks it has been felt. Guess who is supposed to make it work? But where are all those people who are going to make this rejuvenation and corporate renaissance possible? Many of them are gone-lost in downsizing, synergies, and rightsizings

The world's barite reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India and the United States are expected to remain the leading producing countries, and the United States will continue to be the largest consumer. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4.41 Mt (4.86 million st), which is about 50% of capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydrocarbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the US requirements.
