The REP experiment is part of the research programme conducted by Andra to investigate the possibility of reversible radwaste disposal in a Jurassic (Callovo-Oxfordian) argillite formation at the Meuse/Haute-Marne underground laboratory site in northeastern France. The experiment focuses on the hydromechanical response of the formation to sinking the laboratory access shaft. Modelling of boreholes and shaft sinking operations has helped to optimise measurement point locations based on initial stress tensor anisotropy, while minimising interaction between instrument boreholes. Analyses were made of model sensitivity to intrinsic rock characteristics, hydromechanical coupling properties and sensor installation procedures. L’expérimentation REP fait partie du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire engagé par l’Andra pour étudier la possibilité d’un stockage réversible des déchets radioactifs dans la formation Callovo-Oxfordienne des argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne (Commune de Bure - France). Cette expérimentation permettra d’étudier la REponse hydromécanique de la formation aux sollicitations engendrées par le fonçage du Puits d’accès du laboratoire souterrain de recherche. Afin d’optimiser le positionnement des points de mesures, compte tenu de l’anisotropie du tenseur des contraintes initiales, et de minimiser les interactions entre les forages d’instrumentation, des modélisations des forages et du creusement du puits ont été conduites. Des analyses de sensibilité aux caractéristiques intrinsèques de la roche, aux propriétés de couplage HM et aux protocoles d’installation des capteurs ont été faites. Die REP-Untersuchung ist Teil des multidisziplinären Forschungsprogramms, das die ANDRA im Callovo-Oxfordian-Tonstein in situ am Standort Meuse/Haute Marne (Gemeinde Bure – Frankreich) im Hinblick auf eine Eignung zur reversiblen Lagerung radioaktiver Abfälle durchführt. Dabei soll das hydro-mechanische Verhalten der Formation auf die Beanspruchungen, die durch das Abteufen des Zugangsschachts zum Untertage-Forschungslabor erzeugt werden, untersucht werden. Zur optimalen Positionierung der Messpunkte unter Berücksichtigung der Anisotropie des Tensors der Ausgangsspannungen und zur Minimierung der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung der Instrumentierbohrungen wurden ein Schachtabteuf- und Bohrmodelle entwickelt. Zur Untersuchung der inhärenten Eigenschaften des Gesteins, des gekoppelten HM-Verhaltens und der Installationsprotokolle der Messsonden wurden Sensibilitätsanalysen durchgeführt.

A large wedge failure had occurred in the study area which was under construction. Therefore, in order to analyze the potential instability for this rock slope, the authors conducted numerical analysis with DEM and then the behaviour of rock mass was analysed after appropriate reinforce-ments were applied. Ein großer Keildefekt geschah in dem Untersuchungsgebiet, das im Bau befindlich ist. Deshalb, um die potentielle Unbeständigkeit für diesen Felsenabhang zu analysieren, führen die Urheber zahlenmäßige Analyse mit DEM. Und dann wird die Bewegung der Felsenmasse ana-lysiert, nachdem angemessene Verstärkungstruppen angewandt werden. Un grand échec de coin sèst passé dans le région étudié qui était en construction. Par conséquent afin d’analyser linstabilité potentielle de cette pente de roches, les auteurs ont mené une analyse numérique avec DEM. Ensuite le comportement de la masse de roches pourrait être analysée après les renforts appropriés étaient appliqués.

This paper briefly discusses the geologic conditions in South Florida relative to the design, construction, and performance of deep foundations. The subsurface conditions in this area are unique in that the rock layers are highly porous and often very soft, and are sandwiched between layers of typically loose, uncemented quartz fine sands. Due to the high porosity of the Miami Limestone, 4-inch diameter rock coring is often required to obtain intact samples, and dewatering of excavations is sometimes difficult or impossible. The sand layers, typically tens of feet thick, are very loose to loose in relative density and have been the cause of unexpected large, deep foundation settlements. The engineering properties of the various geologic formations are discussed, along with typical deep foundation types used in the Miami area prior to and after 1980.

Abstract: In order to develop non-destructive methods in studying physical and mechanical properties of rock and replacing them with difficult and expensive static methods, several ultrasonic tests were carried out on cylindrical rock specimens in accordance with the ISRM suggested methods and velocity of P and S waves were determined. Also, density, porosity, water absorption, uniaxial compressive strength and indirect tensile strength were determined for each specimen in accordance with ISRM suggested methods. According to above tests static and dynamic elastic constants were calculated After statistical analysis of data obtained from tests, the relationships between velocity of elastic waves and physical or mechanical parameters were determined and some equations were obtained. Also similar analyses were performed on static and dynamic constants and some equations were extracted. Using these equations, the physical and mechanical parameters of rock and also static elastic constants can be estimated by conducting simple and quick tests (i.e. ultrasonic tests). Abriß: Um zu entwickeln, die zerstörungsfreien Methoden für Studieren die physischen und mechanischen Eigentümer von Steinen und auch ist für Ersetzen diese Methoden mit schwierigen teuren statischen Methoden, mehrere altrasonic Prüfungen auf zylindrischen Steinproben gemäß ISRM anregenden Methoden und den Geschwindigkeiten von S und P Wellen bestimmt worden sind durchgeführt worden. Außer der Dichtheit und der Porosität betonen Wasser Aufnahme und monoaxial Widerstand und dehnbaren indirekten Widerstand jeder Probe betreffend der erhaltenen Ergebnisse die atmosphärische Aufladung sind bestimmt worden und die dynamischen Faktoren der Steine sind kalkuliert worden. Nachdem statistische Analyse die Korrelation der Ergebnisse zwischen der Geschwindigkeit elastischer Wellen und mechanischer und physischer Eigentümer der Steine erhalten worden ist, und mehrere Verhältnisse sind vorgeschlagen worden. Eine ähnliche Analyse ist auf atmosphärischer Aufladung und dynamischen Faktoren durchgeführt worden und einige Verhältnisse sind erhalten worden. Mit Hilfe dieser Verhältnisse die physischen und mathematischen Eigentümer von Steinen und auch können die Statistik Faktoren durch einfachen und schnellen altrasonic Prüfungen erhalten werden. The statistical analysis of the slag composition influence on copper losses to discard slag in the reverberatory furnaces No.1 and No.2 in the RTB BOR, Copper Smelter and Refinery (Yugoslavia) is presented in this paper. The model for the slag basicity calculation is determined, and connected to the copper distribution coefficients between the matte and slag phase. The influence of all components on the slag structure is also illustrated.

The process of roof drilling and bolting is one of the most dangerous jobs in underground mining. In the United States, roof drilling and bolting results in about 1,000 accidents with injuries each year. Researchers, from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are studying the feasibility of using a drill-monitoring system to estimate the strength of successive layers of rock and assess the integrity of a mine roof. Such a system would allow roof drill operators to be warned when a weak layer is being drilled. Using measurements taken during drilling, a neural network can classify mine roof strata in terms of relative strength. The concept has been proven in principle. This research project was undertaken to increase the safety of underground miners, especially those involved in roof bolting. The system should be applicable to the mobile drills now used in underground mines, and the system would likely find wider application as well.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11 km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River in the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (eg Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the æTechnical FeasibilityÆ phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralisation/ precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru SA, and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the AMD could be sufficiently treated to be potentially used to supplement the drinking water supply of Lima, and for agricultural (eg irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for implementation of the full-scale treatment facility at the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980.s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão - GO), Bunge (Cajati - SP), Fosfértil (Tapira - MG) and Copebrás (Catalão - GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

"Huge electrochemical investigations have been performed on Technical faculty in Bor (Serbia) which main goal was the clarification of the copper sulfide minerals behaviour in hydrometallurgic and flotation processes. Modeling of these processes was a part of the effort for better understanding of the reaction mechanisms.The consideration of electrical analog circuit and mathematical model of processes at interfaces copper sulfide/electrolyte (CuS/(CuSO4+H2SO4), Cu2S/H2SO4 and CuFeS2/H2SO4), based on studies of the overvoltage – time transients, will be presented. The transients were obtained using single pulse galvanostatic method and electrochemical cell with standard three electrode assembly. In that goal it was developed an original system for computer measurements that enables the application of several methods for electrochemical investigations (galvanostatic, potentiostatic, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrometry etc). The system was tested and adjusted using commercial electrochemical equipment made by AMEL, Milano.In the first stage of consideration the different equivalent electrical circuits have been tested by computer programme OrCAD 9.2 in order to identify the circuit with responses equivalent in shape to experimentally obtained ones. In that way it was established a configuration of an analog electrical circuit for investigated electrochemical system. That phase enabled only very rough determination of values of circuit components and their relative ratio.In the second stage the method for determination of all elements of electrical analog circuit is described. It is based on mathematical consideration of a given circuit on one hand, and valves of the overvoltages at selected times, obtained from charging and discharging parts of galvanostatic transients, on the other."

Excessive noise has long been a hazard in the coal-mining industry. Studies conducted during the mid-1970s and mid-1990s consistently show that hearing loss within the mining industry persists, in spite of regulatory requirements and sampling technology advances. When the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's new health standards to protect miners from hearing loss took effect in September 2000, the potential developed to reevaluate sampling approaches with regard to noise-source hazards, such as task-based methods. This paper describes results from a Pennsylvania State University research project now being conducted at an underground coal mine. Each occupation was reviewed, and a list of tasks or processes performed by each was generated. Traditional personal noise dosimetry, static sound pressure levels and equipment sound mappings have been performed. Job tasks indicating the greatest levels of daily noise exposure and contributions to noise dose have been identified and will be discussed.

For the application of sodium carbonate slag treatment to product high purity copper on an industrial scale, the counter-flow batch process that reduces the amount of utilized slag is proposed from the viewpoint of the post-treatment of slag. Based on the distribution ratios of several impurities between the slag and molten copper determined previously, the effectiveness of this process is discussed using a mathematical model and confirmed experimentally. According to the model, the slag consumption to remove Sb to a required level in case of the counter-flow batch process with 3 reactors is calculated to be around 30 % of that in the case of an ordinary batch process, where pure sodium carbonate is used as a slag at every stage.

A common feature of the kinds and amounts of impurities present most pyrometallurgical, processes is injection of oxygen to, remove various in the feed. The degree of success of a specific process step relies critically on control of the instantaneous oxygen potential/oxidation stage, throughout the step as well as upon termination of the step. This will, for instance, determine the distribution of impurities between metal and slag. As long as the operation is perturbation free -detailed analysis of all additions and application of advanced models often yield satisfactory control means However, a pyrometallurgical process is seldom free from disturbances, which reduces the accuracy of the static models and leads to inconsistencies in scheduled route might be uncontrollable changes in quality and quantity of feed, operator interventions and shift changes, timing of cranes, lining wear and accretions etc. The implementation of dynamic, control to correct for disturbances and, more generally for process optimization, requires continuous on-line information on, the actual status of the process. The implementation of sensors for continuous process monitoring, e.g., as regards the instantaneously prevailing oxygen potential or oxidation stage, has been hampered by the highly aggressive environment in smelters; This is. where remote-sensing techniques based on optics and spectroscopy, have proven to form invaluable, tools towards the realization of dynamic production control. Since about 15 years Semtch has developed and industrialized a remote-sensing technology, based on ,optics and spectroscopy, for continuous on-line process monitoring and production control of various pyrometallurgical processes. The presentation will discuss applicability aspects with examples and experiences from installations and tests in ferrous and non-ferrous industry. Traditionally trucks have dominated haulage in open pit mines. Only recently have conveyors begun to be used in the long haul and high lift duties of surface mines. Steep angle conveyors are proven versatile systems for elevating or lowering materials continuously at steep angles to 90¦. This paper describes the design of a bucket-type steep angle conveyor that was developed as a joint research project between the Western Australian School of Mines and the Maanshan Institute of Mining Research in China. The steep angle conveyor can be used as a viable option for transporting blocky ore from open pit mines. A pilot conveyor was constructed and tested to determine its technical and operational feasibility. Furthermore, a computer model based on Matlab mathematical modelling software was developed to simulate the performance of the pilot conveyor. The model enabled to determine the design parameters of industry-scale conveyors to yield satisfactory performance. These conveyors become very cost-effective for those mines having large mine lives and depths greater than about 500 metres.

Quality control is essential for augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles (also known as continuous flight auger (CFA) piles outside the United States) and drilled displacement (DD) piles since the pile is constructed below the ground surface out of the direct sight of the personnel constructing and inspecting the pile. ACIP piles are being successfully constructed to support high-rise structures, hospitals, arenas and stadiums, mass transit systems, and power and industrial facilities. The use of DD pile technology is also gaining ground in the United States, typically utilizing proprietary systems such as Omega (currently utilized by Richard Goettle Inc., and LG Barcus and Sons, Inc.), Berkel, and DeWal (currently utilized by Morris-Shea). Different types of ACIP/DD pile installation equipment are shown in Figures 1 and 2. ACIP piles are installed into granular and cohesive soils, and soft rock to lengths currently approaching 130 ft (39.5 m), with diameters up to 24 to 36 inches (610 to 915 mm), and sustaining design loads approaching 900 kips (4000 kN). Current DD pile installation equipment in the United States is capable of installing up to 79-ft-long (24 m) piles with diameters ranging from 12 to 18 inches (305 mm to 460 mm).

Since the mid-1990s, the Chino Mine Facility (Chino) located near Silver City, New Mexico has been developing a closure plan with financial assurance to protect water quality, as required by State regulations. In February 2002, Chino and the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) reached agreement on a closure plan; a closure cost amount of approximately $US 394 million ($A 591 million) was finalised in April 2003. Both the New Mexico Water Quality Act Regulations (1977) and the New Mexico Mining Act Regulations (1993) guided development of the closure plan and financial assurance amount. The process incorporated many years of correspondence, studies, negotiations and administrative hearings. The major technical issues focused on regrading slopes of the leach ore stockpiles and waste rock piles; cover systems; water treatment systems; and abatement of ground water contamination. The proposed financial assurance amount covers all closure costs and provides for perpetual water treatment.

Traditional geostatistical methods have been used in ore reserve estimation for decades. Neural Networks (NNs) have provided an alternative approach to data analysis and ore reserve estimation. Unlike the traditional geostatistical methods, neural network uses a highly non-linear complex algorithm to do the estimation. Although Neural Networks have been demonstrated to be attractive alternatives as with every new techniques, there are questions which remain unanswered. This paper presents a comparative analysis with different types of metamodeling approaches -- Triangular, Kriging, Spline, and Neural Network. The neural-network is organized in a multiple-layers and Back-propagation model is used to handle the non-linearity and hidden slabs for smoothing the predicted results. With multiple dimensional and very noisy drill hole sample data, the ore grade is predicted and the overall performance is validated by the analysis of R-squared (R2), Root-Mean-Squared (RMS), and contours of ore grade spatial variability. The ore grade and tonnage of estimated outputs are also compared with various cut-off grades.

Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. Hochtief AG Germany has developed a comprehensive management and information system for the construction industry named Aristoteles. This system is an efficient supporting tool to manage a variety of construction sites as well as operating business units with required economic targets. As such, Aristoteles offers wide-ranging control of complex economic processes in construction in a consistent manner. In this paper the process oriented functions of the system will be described with special emphasis on finance accounting and cost control. The basic elements in this respect are tender estimation, creation of initial project budgets and running budgets, regular determination of work done and result forecast to the end of the project. Further, cost accounting, monthly reporting, and all balance-related postings are included. On the basis of the extensive reporting (targeted/actual cost comparison, cost manager, project report, actual/targeted hours worked comparison, overhead cost report, amendment report or project (result) lists of all projects realized by one business unit), the responsible managers can make justified project evaluations, project controls and variance analyses during the project period and derive appropriate management measures. Thus, Aristoteles includes all substantial elements for the risk management of the operational business. In big construction joint-stock companies it is of crucial importance to satisfy the information requirements of the investors. In this respect the system provides a transparent presentation of the financial, investment and profitability situation of the company. In the international construction industry the balancing rules according to IAS (International Accounting Standards) have already been used to a larger extent. In accordance with these rules the partial profits of the work during execution can be shown as realized even before completion of a long-term contract. The validity of Aristoteles will be outlined briefly. Major advantages using the system are highly enhanced accuracy of project controlling, systematic overhead allocation to projects, change of attitude of the project personnel due to increased cost consciousness and improved flow of information within the company.
