HIGH SPEED RAILWAY NETWORK Spain is a very adequate country to develop the high speed railway network thank to its geographical feature which has a 600km long radius, from Madrid- the capital that covers mostly the whole country. Therefore, the railway is a major competitor of the airline. In Spain, the new access to the north and northwest is nowadays the most important railway project which will allow a significant saving of time in the near future to the central plateau and the northern territories. Time savings as well as strict environmental considerations have been the main objective of various studies during the last decade leading to Guadarrama and Pajares tunnels as ones of the optimum solutions. Cordoba-Malaga high speed railway, the extension of the present Madrid—Sevilleline, through the Abdalajis range and the rail project to cross oriental Pyrenees between Spain and France are another two samples of large tunnels currently underway. In these four projects, the ground already encountered and to be soon encountered is highly variable, from very hard granite and gneiss in Guadarrama and Pertus to very poor argillite in Abdalajis, shale in Pajares and schist in Pertus. A number of faults are also expected. Hence, double shield hard rock TBM has been chosen. Figure 1 shows a general scheme in four projects. These four projects represent a total of 2 × 68 km of which 87 km are under DRAGADOS contracts. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY DRAGADOS Guadarrama Tunnels This project is the longest twin tunnel with 28.377km, in Spain and considered one of the longest in Europe. The operating speed will be 300 km/h. This tunnel will link Madrid and the north territories through Guadarrama range. (Figure 2). The south portal is placed at el. 997.8m above the sea level. The tunnel starts with an inclination of 3‰, increasing until 15‰. After 6,620m length, the tunnel passes under the Morcuera ridge with an overburden of 960m. After 13,400m length, the elevation is 1,024m which is the highest point, and then the tunnel declines with a slope of 9.5‰, 2‰ and 19‰ until the north portal in Segovia province. "The Las Cristinas deposit in Venezuela contains reserves of 12.8 million ounces of gold at a grade of 1.20 g/t (Crystallex, 2004). The deposit comprises fully oxidized saprolite (SAPO) overlying a layer of sulphide-enriched saprolite (SAPS) which lies above carbonateleached bedrock (CLB) and carbonate stable or un-leached bedrock (CSB). Gold occurs at about the same concentration in all lithological groups. The bedrock units contain minor amounts of copper (about 0.1%) as chalcopyrite, while SAPO contains virtually no copper which has been leached and deposited in the SAPS zone.A previous owner began investigation of the Las Cristinas deposit in 1991. Over the next seven years, the company drilled 1,174 holes with a total length of 159 km, conducted extensive metallurgical testwork, including pilot plant operations, and completed feasibility studies. Construction was started in 1997 and again in 1999, however, on each occasion was suspended.Crystallex has been producing gold inVenezuela since the early 1990s. In 1997, Crystallex acquired Inversora Mael which had held two of the claims to the Las Cristinas concessions since 1986. In September 2002, Crystallex entered into a definitive agreement with the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG) to develop the Las Cristinas deposit.An extensive program of studies and testwork was started in late 2002 to determine an optimum development plan for Las Cristinas. Mine Development Associates, SNC–Lavalin Engineers and Constructors, SGS Lakefield Research Limited, J.R. Goode and Associates, and A. Laplante at McGill University acted as the main contractors.Because of the potential value of by-product copper, earlier flowsheets used carbon-inleach for SAPO, but processed all other ore types by flotation to produce a gold-copper concentrate with cyanide leaching of cleaner tailings to maximize gold recovery. Cyanide recovery was necessitated by the high copper content of the leach feed. Initial studies of available data by Crystallex revealed that direct leaching of all ore types would provide about 11% more gold recovery than the previously selected flotation route with reduced capital and operating costs.Bench and pilot-scale studies have confirmed that a SAG-ball mill-gravity-CIL route is very effective for all ore types and will give about 89% gold recovery. Most of automotive magnesium applications are presently produced by high-pressure die casting processes, For further expansion of the alloy usage in automobiles, novel-manufacturing processes needs to be developed, In this study, squeeze casting of AM50 alloy was carried out using a hydraulic press with an applied pressure of 70 MPa, Tensile properties and fracture behavior of the squeeze-cast AM50 were characterized in comparison with the die cast counterpart, The squeeze-cast AM50 alloy exhibits virtually no porosity in the microstructure evaluated by optical microscopy, The results of tensile testing indicate that the improved tensile properties for the squeeze-cast samples over the conventional high-pressure die-cast parts, The analysis of tensile behavior shows that the strain-hardening rate during the plastic deformation of the squeeze-cast specimens is constantly higher than that of the die-cast specimens. The SEM fractography evidently reveals the ductile fracture features of the squeeze-cast alloy AM50.

The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.

lmenite is a primary ore feed to the DuPont chloride process for the manufacture of titanium diox-ide pigment. We seek to determine ilmenite geochemistry as a function of original source and as-certain which ilmenites have chemistry most amenable to upgrading via iron-leaching (leucoxenization) and that have favorable, with respect to pigment manufacture, trace element content. Ilmenite geochemistry is a function of its primary origin and of subsequent alteration. Heavy mineral sand deposits may contain ilmenite from one or several dominant source rock(s). In addition, ilmenite may alter in the weathering environment, changing the major element compo-sition (iron-leaching) and certain of the minor element content. A primary objective is to classify ilmenites in relation to origin in order to fingerprint source rocks in provenance determination. The changes in trace element chemistry during alteration are also investigated. A “decision tree” is developed to classify ilmenite types and source rock origins. Ultimately, with those methods and by amassing a database of ilmenite types from worldwide locations, it should prove possible to determine ilmenites (and their sources) more susceptible to iron leaching in the weathering en-vironment. Such ilmenites, enhanced in their titanium content, are the preferred ore targets. The method used is electron microprobe analyses at elevated conditions of voltage, cur-rent, and counting time to enable higher precision. In-situ ilmenites from igneous, metamorphic, and altered rocks (saprolites) are analyzed. Initial foci for sedimentary ilmenites are restricted provenance (approaching monogenetic, examples from Spain, Portugal) and polygenetic prove-nance (Denmark). Altered ilmenites, including the DuPont Florida ore, are used to characterize the chemistry of leucoxenization. Trace element concentration, detectability, and cost considera-tion, led to focus on Mn, Mg, V, Cr, and Nb to develop a classification scheme validated by dis-criminant analysis and “classification-regression trees”. Results show a high degree of success for restricted provenance study and an acceptable one for polygenetic provenance.

Longwall mining techniques were introduced into U.S. bituminous coal mining operations in the early 1960s. These techniques were gradually adopted by many mines during the 1970s. By 1983, considered to be the peak of the longwall mine census, there were 118 active longwall faces in 79 coal mines throughout the United States. Beginning in 1984, longwall faces began a decline in numbers that has continued to the present day (Fig. 1). The geographic distribution of longwall faces today is shown in Fig.2 according to region. A breakdown of recent longwall mine production by region is shown in Table 1. An approximate breakdown of present longwall face installations by product (metallurgical and steam) is shown in Table 2.

The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the FrothSim flotation simulator and to demonstrate its ability to predict the performance of real flotation circuits. Example simulations are presented in which the feed rate to the circuit is varied, followed by simulations in which a cleaner section and recycle loop are added to the rougher bank.The simulator is able to predict both the recovery and the grade produced by the cells at all locations in a circuit and the simulator is shown to produce plausible grade recovery curves. It also demonstrated that the performance of banks of cells improve as the feed rate to the bank increased (improved grade for a given recovery), but that more cells are required to give the same overall recovery.

Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

The extraction and transport of coal from underground coal mines can result in significant liberation of coal and/or silica dust into the mine atmosphere. Mine operators have long used ventilating air as a primary means of diluting generated dust, removing dust from the working faces and preventing dust from reaching the minersÆ working environment. As production levels have increased, mine operators continue to be challenged in maintaining dust concentrations below compliance levels. The need for maximising the effectiveness of available ventilating air in conjunction with other effective controls, such as water sprays and dust collectors, continues to be critical to the long-term health of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale laboratory and mine-site research to evaluate improved application of dust controls for both longwall and continuous mining methods. A summary of recent research results and recommended practices will be provided.

The selection of the ore haulage system is a key decision made in the development of an underground mine. The haulage system is one of the components that define a mineÆs ability to respond to changes in mining inventory and market conditions. The complexity of this decision for Telfer Deeps was affected by the realisation during the feasibility process that the true scale of the potential underground mineralisation at Telfer was still to be quantified. This paper provides an overview of the process used in the Telfer Project Feasibility Study to select an ore haulage system for Telfer Deeps. The purpose is to highlight the value of impartially approaching tasks of this type with a robust process. The process should be able to respond to issues identified as the task progresses towards the objective of finding the best solution for an ore haulage system for the mine. For Telfer Deeps, this process resulted in the selection of a haulage system built around a shaft. The systems considered during the feasibility are discussed and the components of the haulage system constructed for Telfer Deeps are described.

The Red Lake mine is one of the richest gold mines in the world. The primary mining methods are overhand and underhand cut and fill. Starting in 2003, Goldcorp initiated an expansion program at the mine. The expansion includes a new 6.55 m diameter hoisting shaft currently under construction. The shaft will be driven to a length of over 2180 m. The shaft will be used as a primary ventilation intake to the mine. In addition to the new hoisting shaft, a return air raise is being driven approximately 1690 m from surface. This raise will be a parallel return to the existing mine infrastructure. This paper describes the ventilation and climatic analyses performed in support of the expansion project. The study included a full mine ventilation survey, in situ rock mass measurements, analysing options related to mine layout, airway sizing calculations, air heating options, and climatic simulations. Specifications were prepared for an air heating system and main and booster fans. Analyses were also performed related to heat in the stoping areas namely caused by auxiliary fans and backfill with high cement content.

Education and Training for the minerals industry has been identified as one of the key priorities by the AusIMM and many closely related groups. The AusIMM Education Taskforce has been engaged, through a visioning exercise, in evaluating what minerals education and training should look like by 2025. A common recurring theme is that for minerals education and training to be efficient and effective into the future, it needs to be comprehensive and inclusive. Some previous attempts to achieve efficiency and effectiveness have had limited success, mainly due to approaching the issues involved from a narrow, singular perspective. This paper outlines that the achievement of the desired outcome may require an approach that parallels the same techniques that are used for multi-dimensional mine planning, treating tertiary minerals education and training in a similar way to the planning involved for a complex orebody. Just as efficient and effective mine planning requires engagement and understanding of many factors, so too does engagement with tertiary minerals education and training. The major factors that need to be considered are outlined in the paper, including: levels of tertiary education and training; Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), Levels 1 to 13: systems of minerals education and training, such as higher education, (mainly universities), industry/professional associations and licencing requirements, vocational education, (mainly TAFE) and workplace programs; types of minerals or mining methods involved; volume of delivery; stage in the flow sheet, (geology, mining, beneficiation, extraction, refining). For comprehensive mine planning there is the need to develop links or roadways and openings between different levels of a mine. Similarly, to achieve a comprehensive tertiary minerals education and training model, there is a need to develop pathways, recognition and credit transfer between the various levels and components of minerals tertiary education and training.

Mud rushes are hazardous occurrences that have occurred frequently in mines in South Africa, and have been the cause of numerous fatalities in the past. Mud rush incidents not associated with accidents are believed to be common occurrences that are not generally reported. Many such incidents are probably associated with the operation of chutes and box fronts. This paper describes the conditions necessary for mud rush occurrences, postulated mud rush mechanisms, and methods of combating the mud rush hazard.

INTRODUCTION The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina is the fourth largest airport in the southeast region of the United States. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is currently underway with planning, designing and constructing are placement Passenger Terminal as part of the Major Capital Improvements Program at Raleigh Durham International Airport. The Terminal C Expansion and Renovation Project will replace the existing Terminal C structure with a new processor building and concourse. The project is separated into several contracts. The early stage contracts are constructing a west side storm water management facility, relocating taxiways, installing new drainage systems, installing new aircraft apron pavement, Demolition, the Central Energy Plant and Early Foundations. The later projects are the Terminal Building, Passenger Boarding Bridges, Information Technology Systems and Integration, Furniture, Furnishings & Equipment and Specialty Millwork. The Terminal Building will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 constructs the north half of the new terminal. Airline operations will move to the new terminal at the completion of this phase. Phase 2 completes construction of the south processor building. The full build out of the project, subject to funding availability, will replace the remainder of the south concourse. The Program’s primary focus is to replace the existing passenger Terminal C with a new terminal that will provide more passenger gates and larger passenger screening, ticketing and baggage handling facilities. The planning for the New Terminal C Program began in 2002 with construction starting in March, 2003. The continuing growth of passenger airline travel in the Raleigh/Durham metropolitan area requires RDU to expand its facilities to keep up with the present and future growth within the Region. In October of 2002, the RDU Airport Authority selected Parsons Transportation Group as the Program Manager/Construction Manager to help assist in the development of the Terminal C expansion program. RDU Airport Authority selected the Seattle Washington Office of URS Corporation as the Engineer of Record for the West Side Storm Water Management Facilities. The Westside Storm Water Management Facilities Project became one of the early critical path activities of the overall RDUAA Terminal C Expansion Program. The Briar Creek Reservoir had been constructed to accommodate storm water runoff to the west of the Airport. The existing 1.5 m culvert that drained runoff from the airport terminal (area) to the reservoir was insufficient in supporting the additional flows

Kinetics of bubble-particle interaction, surface hydrophobicity and interfacial phenomena in sulfide mineral flotation are discussed in this paper. Results of the measurements of a bubble and mineral induction time (IT) and detachment force (DF), vacuum of bubble evolution (VE) and mineral floatability are discussed for pyrite, galena, chalcocite and chalcopyrite. Natural wetting and wetting induced by xanthates with different lengths of alkyl chains are examined. Experiments show the existence of several maxima of hydrophobicity on dependences of pH and electrochemical potential. These maxima are attributed as the reflection of mineral surface heterogeneity due to xanthate adsorption and the presence of cationic and anionic centres with uncompensated positive and negative charges. These charges can be neutralised by both regulation pH and applied potential. The aim of this paper is to evaluate a thickness of the rupturing film and to estimate how long the bubble-mineral interactions are according to the experimental values of IT, in order to develop a procedure for comparing of the results of DF and atomic force measurements in the same dimensionality, and to compare the results of the experimental studies on the wettability of sulfides with those predicted by the models of physics of capillarity.

The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant. Surface Plasmon Resonance spectroscopy (SPR), combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithiophosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as -300 mV (vs SHE). In many high explosive applications, the explosives are covered or clad by a metal. This metal cover may serve a variety of purposes including: 1) to protect and prevent the disturbing or misshaping of the explosive during its transportation, handling and use, 2) in many military applications the cover material itself is used to provide a required effect, for example, the shrapnel from grenades, the metallic liner of shaped charges, and the confinement of explosives so they perform optimally, and, 3) in civilian applications in the use of well perforating shaped charges and linear shaped charges used for the demolition of steel structures such as bridges. For these reasons the interactions between the explosives and their covering materials are of great importance in understanding the performance of these devices.
