In this paper, the molybdenite flotation tailing of cleaner-scavenger bank which has a mass of very fine particles has been taken as raw ore to be processed by flotation with/without ultrasonic. The effect of ultrasonic frequency, intensity, processing time and uploading location on molybdenite flotation efficiency is investigated by four-factor three-level orthogonal experiment, and the effect significances of these ultrasonic variables to molybdenite flotation efficiency have also been evaluated. Single-factor analysis of variance is conducted to investigate whether the effect of ultrasonic on molybdenum ore flotation efficiency is significant or not. The samples extracted from different ore species in different time have been mixed to analyze the particle size. The results show that the particle size of +38µm in concentrate obviously increases while the particle size of -25µmobviouslydecreaseswith ultrasonic, which means that ultrasonic is good for flotation due to sludge removing effect. Today, sodium cyanide is extensively used for extracting gold, however it is highly toxic to the environment if not managed properly. This paper discusses the key challenges presented to gold operations in efforts to come into alignment with the Russian environmental regulations and suggests solutions to overcome these challenges. It is a fact that the major environmental threat cyanide poses to water sources. Therefore, natural water sources should be well protected from the adverse effect of cyanides used in hydrometallurgical processes. For this, the following site procedures and facilities are practiced: in-site and external water recycling systems, reclaim water treatment if required and tailings ponds with water impermeable screens (tailings ponds with controlled leakage). Cost comparison analysis of cyanide destruction methods was carried out. It was revealed that the aldehyde treatment method developed by Irgiredmet JSC demonstrated the best economics. Cyanide emissions are treated by mass-manufactured packed and membrane devices which allow to keep cyanides at the acceptable limiting values established by environmental regulatory agencies.

The separating efficiency of a flotation column is largely limited by the degree of backmixing of tailings into the froth zone, and its recovery is limited by the degree of short-circuiting of feed to the tailings. Current columns are typically made very tall, on the order of 30-40 feet, in order to limit the effects of backmixing and short-circuiting. These effects can also be reduced in a much shorter column, provided that the flow in the column approaches plug-flow. In this work, horizontal baffles were shown to improve the performance of a 6-foot tall laboratory-scale flotation column treating a difficult-to-clean, heavily oxidized coal. Tests with variation in the position of the baffles showed that for the greatest benefit, baffles are needed both above and below the feed inlet. Tracer tests with a fluorescent dye water tracer showed that the addition of the baffles reduced the amount of feed water entrained into the froth at any given coal recovery.

Introduction Sulfide copper, zinc and iron concentrates are recovered in the 5000 ton per day flotation plant operated by Cities Service Company at Copperhill, Tennessee. The heavy-sulphide ore is first ground to 50 pct. minus 200 mesh and a bulk concentrate floated. The bulk concentrate, over 60 pct. of the ore weight, is reground to 72 pct. minus 200 mesh and then treated in a selective flotation circuit to recover copper and zinc concentrates. The tailing of selective float is the iron sulphide material source for the manufacture of sulfuric acid and iron sinter. The valuable minerals in the ore are chalcopyrite, marmatitic sphalerite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. A typical mineralogical analysis will be found in table 1. A typical material flowsheet will be found in figure 1. Shown in the flowsheet are a scavenger float on the bulk rougher tailing and a copper-talc separation unit. At times a lead-copper separation circuit has been run.

The conventional Froude number is blind to the presence of solids, their density and their concentration in a stream of slurry mixture such as tailings flowing in an open channel. This often leads to rough approximations of subcritical, critical and supercritical regimes, based on one phase flow Froude number, limiting subcritical to a value smaller than 0.8 and supercritical to values above 1.4, as proposed in the past by Green, Abulnaga and other authors. While acceptable for small flows, such approximations can be uneconomical for the larger flows encountered in some modern plants that treat up to half a million t/day. A review of concepts of a densimetric Froude number sheds some light on the effect of solids on stratification prior and subsequent to a hydraulic jump. While the approach is heavily borrowed from modern sedimentology, it provides a useful tool to designers of large launders or open channel tailings systems. These concepts are reviewed with some practical examples.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.

IN 1926, finer grinding began to be a feature of the milling practice of the Southeast Missouri lead district. Nothing since the adoption of flotation has caused greater changes and greater improvement in results. The trend toward finer grinding, with the consequent discarding of tailing at finer sizes, and consequent lower assays in lead, continued to progress until 1931, when the abnormally low price of lead brought a halt: that is, the better metallurgical results obtained would not offset the increased costs due to higher power and necessary maintenance. Since 1931 a slight tendency toward the discard of coarser tailing has taken place. , In 1926, larger rod mills i.12 ft. 1 in. by 6 ft. 6 in.) than any previously used in the district were installed in cue plant, and a new primary crushing plant, of greater capacity was built. This combination demonstrated immediately the better metallurgical results obtainable by finer grinding and all the mills now running have adopted the practice.

A conceptual approach to the bioremediation of uranium mill tailings (UMT) is presented., This approach focuses on, biosorption to remediate the. effluent solution and bioleaching remediate the. solid fraction. Comparative biosorption studies were performed with synthetic single metal solutions using a commercially available biopolymer. The maximum rate of metal sorption by calcium alginate was found to be 5.43, 6,39, 6.48, and 9.74 mg dm-3 min-1 for U022*, Ba2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+, respectively. Activation energy (AEa) for barium uptake by calcium alginate beads was determined to be 11.5 kJ, indicating a diffusion controlled reaction mechanism. Thermodynamic values (AG+ AH+ and ASt) of the metal-alginate activated complex, as reported in the literature, were found to be in agreement with those calculated from this research. Results show that this biopolymer can be effectively applied in the removal of select metals prevalent in uranium mill tailing effluents and associated waste streams.

Previous papers (1, 2) pertaining to the treatment of uranium-bearing ores were concerned with the flotation of the radioactive minerals. In this investigation, the application of flotation to the removal of acid-consuming minerals from uranium ores was considered. Two pitchblende-bearing ores, which, because of the presence if dolomite were abnormally high acid consumers, were studied. In both in-stances commercial reagents of widely varying fatty acid composition proved satisfactory as flotation col-lectors, particularly at a pH of 10.5, for the carbonate minerals. From an economic viewpoint, however, Neo-Fat 42-12 was favoured. A mixture of sodium tripolyphosphate and citric acid was an effective depressant for the pitchblende in the ores. The tailings remaining after the removal of the dolomite by flotation contained, in one case, 88.5 per cent of the uranium in the original sample, and, in the other, 93.8 per cent. The dust exposure of the longwall shearer operator is usually determined by his position relative to the cutting drums. The dust generated during cutting may travel up-wind, against the primary airflow, and be carried out into the walkway where it can contaminate the intake air for as much as 10 feet outby the shearer operator's controls. Thus, both head and tail drum operators are exposed to un-acceptably high levels of air-borne respirable dust. One Solution The latest generation of long-wall shearers has features that make the use of radio remote or umbilical (hard wire) remote control relatively easy to implement. Remote control can enable shearer operators to control machines from positions that are less dusty than normal control stations. With either type, the head-drum operator can now control the shearer from a position up to 20 feet on the intake-air side of the shearer, while the tail-drum operator's station is now located across from the head drum.

IN an ideal mill, with perfect milling operations, the mineral extraction would be 100 per cent, the, concentrate would be 100 per cent mineral, the tailing would assay zer.0 mineral and the milling cost would be zero dollars. Such an operation can, of course, never be attained. We can only strive to approach it as nearly as possible and in doing so most recognize .the fact that the three primary factors in milling: assay of concentrate, assay of tailing, and cost of operation bear a definite economic relationship to each other. This relation will change from time to time and will be different for different mills, depending on milling equipment, character and quality of feed, market conditions, and other factors. It is granted that for a given operation there is an economic point, but the location of this point is difficult. It is for the purpose of making some of these economic points a little more tangible that this paper has been prepared.

The presence of radioactivity in uranium mill wastes has resulted in somewhat unique waste disposal methods. In addition to the common problems of disposing of large quantities of solid wastes, neutralizing acids, minimizing dissolved heavy metals, and clarifying all liquid effluents, the uranium mill operator must sample and analyze liquid effluents for micro-micro-quantities of radio- nuclides such as Ra226, Th230, and Pb210. Special disposal methods or decontamination procedures are required to meet the stringent limitations established by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission on the concentration of radionuclides in liquid effluents. Routine monitoring of the receiving stream is also normally required. In recent years there has been a growing concern about the radioactivity remaining in uranium mill tailings, particularly at the sites of shut-down or dismantled mills. The State of Colorado, in cooperation with the industry, has adopted regulations for stabilization of inactive uranium mill tailings.

When the Henderson Project is completed in 1975, it will become one of the Free World's largest primary molybdenum producers. The Henderson Mine will be located approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are currently estimated to be 303,000,000 tons with a grade of 0.49% MoS2. The mill and tailing area will be located approximately 14.5 miles from the mine in the Williams Fork Valley, which is on the western slope of the Continental Divide. Ore haulage from the mine to the mill will be by ten miles of underground railroad and 4.5 miles of surface railroad. The concentrator has been designed to mill 30,000 tons per day and will yield approximately 50,000,000 pounds of contained molybdenum per year. This paper is concerned with the tailing and water supply system for the Henderson Project and in particular the environmental considerations affecting their design.

I must have made quite an impression thirty odd years ago, because now you have asked me to do it again. Of course, the picture has changed. Then they were mining uranium ore, recovering the radium from it and throwing away the uranium. Now they are still mining uranium ore, but are throwing the radium out on the tailings dumps. Thirty years ago, most people did not know what ""radioactivity"" meant. Nowadays, they have beard that it is dangerous, and some of them, recently, be-came worried about the radium in the tailings dumps and what becomes of it."

A technique has been proposed for recovering iron from hematite-rich diasporic-type bauxite ore in this study. Direct reduction roasting followed by low intensity wet magnetic separation process was carried out. The parameters including reduction temperature and time, sodium salts, grinding conditions and magnetic field intensity for separation of iron were determined. The optimum process parameters as follows: roasting temperature of 1050 oC, time of 60 min, sodium salts involving sodium sulfate, borax, sodium carbonate with dosages of 10 wt%, 2 wt%, 35 wt% respectively, and magnetic field intensity of 1000 Gs with fineness of pulp reached 92.75% passing -0.074mm. Under the optimal conditions, an iron concentrate containing 88.17% total iron grade and iron recovery of 92.51% was obtained, 4.55% total iron grade in tailings. This novel technique provide a potential route for utilizing hematiterich diasporic bauxite ore, recovering iron resource firstly, and extracting alumina from magnetic separation tailings further.

The need to move large tonnages of slurry has grown as mines have become larger. As existing tailing depositories are filled up, new mines developed, or environmental requirements dictate, it becomes necessary to transport tailing particularly over longer distances. A typical slurry transport system is shown in Figure 1A. Figures 1B, 1C and 1D show sketches of the system auxilliary components: feed box, receiving sump and drop box, respectively. There are two basic types of slurry transport systems, packed flow and slack flow. Packed flow is typified by a pipe running full; slack flow by a launder or pipe running less than full. Slack flow in launders or channels is also referred to as open channel flow. Generally slack flow slurry transportation involves a flow with less than 65 per cent solids, and there is an upper limit on particle size, depending on the slope of the system.

J: H. POLHEMUS, New York, N. Y. (written discussion*).-The Joplin .mining and milling practice has largely influenced operating methods in the Wisconsin district. Milling equipment is essentially of the same type with the notable exception that no tables are used. The treatment of the flue 'sands has been attempted several times but without commercial success. Table material coming from any one mill is low both in tonnage and zinc content. The iron is comparatively high as the pyrite-line "chat" is much more prevalent than the zinc-lime attached particle. In the finer sizes the zinc occurs mainly as free mineral. These condi-tions make the production of good-grade table concentrates very diffi-cult. The accompanying tabulated results from several mill tests indi-cate the character of the mill tails. I think the average mill tails in the district assay nearer 1.5 per cent. zinc than under 1 per cent., as stated by Messrs. Boericke and Garnett.

Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :—About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri,I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr.. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. Approximately 100 million mt of magnetic reject tailings, which contain apatite and about 1% yttrium and rare-earth elements, exist in the eastern U.S. as a result of iron ore mining operations. At the present time, no economic process is available for recovering yttrium from this material. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem to determine if an effective low-cost method could be found, thereby increasing our domestic yttrium reserves. [Fig. 1] is a line drawing of a photograph taken during microprobe analysis of a sample of the tailings, and shows the distribution of yttrium. Typical analysis of this material is 0.14% yttrium and 1.1% rare-earth elements (mainly lanthanum through neodymium). Over half of the yttrium is present as a hydrated Ca-Y silicate deposited along interfaces in the grain structure; whereas, the remainder of the rare-earth elements occur as Ca-Fe-RE silicates.
