This paper presents the results of a field study designed to assess the impact of vane rotation speed on the estimated undrained strength for two Australian bauxite tailings storage facilities. The vane test results are assessed against cone penetration and dissipation tests results to identify if partial drainage may be an issue. An innovative tool capable of measuring pore pressures during vane shear testing, the Piezovane™, is introduced as an improvement over the standard field vane to assess drainage conditions in real-time.

INTRODUCTION The tailing dam is part of the SOHIO L-Bar Uranium Mine and Mill located about 70.8 kilometers (44 miles) west of Albuquerque in northwestern New Mexico. The dam location is shown on Figure 1. The tailing dam is one of the last upstream method dams permitted in the industry. Design and construction aspects of the project, as well as operation and maintenance considerations, are reviewed herein. Since initial construction, SOHIO Western Mining Company and Woodward-Clyde Consultants have developed several modifications and improvements in the dam's operating and monitoring procedures. This work has been done in coordination with the New Mexico State Engineer's Office and in accordance with recommendations in a report done for the Corps of Engineer's Phase I Dam Inspection Report. Modifications and improvements described should be of particular interest to owners and operators of other tailing dams utilizing the upstream method of deposition. The tailing facility was designed for a 10-year life to provide an ultimate storage capacity of 6 1/2 billion kilograms (7 1/2 million short tons) in an area of about 180 acres. A plan view of the tailing dam is shown on Figure 2. The tailing consists of approximately 75% sand size material and 25% fines (material passing the No. 200 sieve). The tailing dam includes a small earth starter dam with raises of the dam accomplished using tailing deposited by upstream method techniques. The starter dam is a homogeneous embankment about 610 meters (2000 feet) long, a maximum height of 12 meters (40 feet) and 2 1/2:1 (horizontal to vertical) upstream and downstream slopes. The starter dam contains an internal drainage system which includes a near vertical chimney drain connected to horizontal finger drains. Several processes are now available for the recovery of free and WAD cyanide from gold plant solutions and pulps. In the past, the incentive for evaluating cyanide recovery in gold plant flowsheets has been economic. In many cases, it has been possible to demonstrate (at least in the laboratory and on paper), an improvement in process economics by; (i) reducing the costs of tailings detoxification, (ii) recycling cyanide at lower cost than the purchase/delivery price of new cyanide, and (iii) generating additional revenue via by¬product sales. Despite these convincing arguments, few cyanide recovery plants have been built at operating gold mines. Also, there is arguably an even more compelling reason for mining companies to consider cyanide recycling. With the growing storm of negative public opinion that the use of cyanide in the mining industry is attracting - following several highly publicized spills over the last couple of years - the time has come for the gold industry to demonstrate environmental diligence and stewardship in the use of this commodity that is so vital for their industry. There is no doubt that the widespread implementation of cyanide recycling will reduce the impact of the cyanidation process on the environment, both by reducing the risk of spills (with less cyanide being transported from manufacturing plants to gold mines), and by reducing the loading of toxic and non-toxic metals and ions in the tailings. In this paper, the various processes that are available for cyanide recovery are discussed, along with the process chemistry. Results of several laboratory and pilot plant trials that have been conducted over the last few years are also presented.

The chemical composition of the asbestos tailings from different mines in the Eastern Townships of Quebec are fairly uniform in composition. The serpentine minerals antigorite and chrysotile form about 85 to 90 per cent of the total. Iron oxides add another 7 to 10 per cent; magnetite represents about 70 per cent of the oxides. Chromite is present in amounts of about 0.5 per cent. The average contents of elemental magnesium, iron and nickel are 23, 6 and 0.25 per cent respectively.

"This paper describes the bench testing, pilot plant studies of alternative flowsheets, to determine the feasibility of gold recovery, by carbon in pulp extraction, in the Schumacher Mill gold flotation tailings. The economics were calculated based on pilot plant recoveries and actual industry operating costs.The economics of the carbon in pulp treatment of the gold flotation tailings were not justifiable. The economics of desliming the gold flotation tailings followed by carbon in pulp treatment were marginal, but favourable. INTRODUCTIONPamour Porcupine Mines, Limited is a gold, silver and copper producer located in Timmins, Ontario. In 1983 the head grade of Pamour's gold ores averaged nine one hundredths of a troy ounce of gold per short ton.Pamour operates two area mills to concentrate the gold ores. Free milling gold ores are processed at the Pamour One Mine mill, whereas the refractory carbonaceous gold ores, and complex gold, silver, and copper sulphide ores, are processed through the Schumacher Mine mill.The complex Schumacher mill feed ores do not all react favourably to flotation methods, consequently this study was commissioned to investigate the feasibility of the carbon in pulp cyanidation of the Schumacher mill gold flotation tailings. These tailings contain ten to fifteen percent of the gold in the mill feed. During the study period, the average grade of the Schumacher mill flotation tailings was nine one thousandths of a troy ounce of gold per ton, or one quarter of a gram of gold per metric tonne."

As tailings dams grow in physical size, their impact on public safety and the environment also increases in severity. Over the last three decades, tailings dam engineering has evolved from largely "trial-and-error" methods to a mature, multi-disciplinary engineering endeavour. This paper reviews the current practice of tailings disposal, and the evolution of tailings dam engineering. Key factors affecting dam integrity and examples of dam failures are then highlighted. Finally, the paper reviews some of the recent trends that lead to new challenges to the mining industry. These challenges include: coping with heightened public concern about dam safety; balancing potential conflict between seismic and environmental requirements; and addressing issues introduced by globalization of the mining industry. Institutional responses and technological tools available to meet these challenges are also outlined.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research at its Reno Research Center to develop a staged agglomeration-heap leaching system and to electrowin the dissolved precious metals from the pregnant leaching solution. For direct electro- winning to be successful, the pregnant solutions generated during the Initial stages of leaching must be higher grade than obtained by conventional heap leaching. The precious metal concentration of the pregnant solution can be Increased by agglomeration pretreatment with cyanide solution which starts the leaching process during the curing period, by leaching with small volumes of solution and by cycling the leaching solution through more than one heap in a staged manner. The resulting pregnant solution is passed directly through an electrowinning circuit. The barren solution from electrowinning is recycled to the leaching circuit. Bench-scale research on the development of the staged leaching system and on the development of an efficient electrowinning cell are described. The Bureau of Mines developed agglomeration- heap leaching technology. This technology was readily adopted by the mining Industry for heap leaching crushed ores and mine wastes. Current research involves the application of this technology to finely ground feed materials such as precious metal-bearing milled tailings. Tailings agglomeration-heap leaching has also been used commercially.

The construction of tailings facilities and heap leach pads for gold mining operations generally requires the installation of one or more impermeable liners beneath the structures to satisfy environmental regulations and prevent the leakage of gold bearing solutions. Liners are usually constructed using clay soils or synthetic membranes, such as high density polyethelene. Low permeability soil liners can be constructed from natural clays, well graded soils with only a small clay content, or sandy soils blended with a small quantity of imported clay such as bentonite or kaolinite. The permeability of such materials, prgperly pped with good quality control, generally lies in the range of 10- to 10- cm/s, and can be designed to meet minimum prescriptive standards set by regulatory agencies. Important benefits resulting from the use of clay liners include the slow rate of penetration of a saturated wetting front, the decrease in permeability of the liner as it consolidates under the applied load of tailings or ore, and attenuation of potential contaminants in the process solutions. Synthetic liners can be attributed a finite permeability as a result of minute perforations and seaming deficiencies, and possess none of the above properties. Synthetic liners are also, by their nature, relatively thin and even a small head build-up above the liner will result in a large hydraulic gradient across it.

Conventional analyses of seepage through saturated media do not apply when tailings impoundments are located above a partially saturated zone. Three stages of seepage are identified and methods for estimating the seepage rates and duration of each stage, based upon flow in partially saturated and saturated porous media, are demonstrated. The effectiveness of earthen liners is discussed and procedures for estimating the required properties of the porous media are provided.

The disposal of dewatered coalmine tailings and coarse reject within spoil piles is gaining popularity as a means of eliminating separate surface tailings storage facilities or dams. The contrasting characteristics of coalmine spoil, coarse reject and tailings are somewhat complimentary, making the co-disposal of dewatered tailings within spoil piles geotechnically feasible and environmentally attractive. However, the impacts of mixing plant rejects within spoil piles are not well understood; in particular, the effects of water draining from the mixed plant rejects on the moisture content of the surrounding spoil. Changes in moisture content can cause additional collapse and degradation settlements of the spoil pile. A series of laboratory tests has been undertaken on mixtures of dewatered coalmine tailings, coarse reject and spoil. The results of these tests have been incorporated into a spreadsheet-based settlement prediction tool to investigate the effects of incorporating mixed plant rejects on total spoil pile settlements. This paper presents the laboratory tests undertaken, the incorporation of the test data into the settlement prediction tool, and settlement estimates for the various mixtures at different stages of construction.CITATION:Kho, A K, Tucker, N, Williams, D J and Shokouhi, A, 2015. Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: 1. a minimum filling rate of 250 ma/h, 2. a curing time of 28 days, and 3. minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

Grand Junction, Colorado’s legacy with uranium mining and milling serves as a model attracting international interest. Access to water and central location to carnotite ore containing uranium and vanadium resulted in the World War II military creating a site in Grand Junction for developing extraction techniques; subsequently, several commercial mill sites were built in the area. Uranium mills produced ore into the 1970’s as well as tonnes of radioactive waste tailings. Tailings contain radium that emits radon gas. Despite the radiation hazard, sandy tailings were added to concrete and became incorporated into roads, schools, businesses and homes. Clean up of sites containing tailings and mill sites began in the 1970’s involving city, state, and federal officials. The Climax mill site had become an auto junk yard mixed with mill tailings. A new disposal site was built out of town and away from the river in the 1990’s. After Climax mill tailings were removed to the disposal site, the land sat vacant for two decades until citizens and city officials developed a masterplan for the riverfront property. The Las Colonias river park is being built in stages including an amphitheater, gardens, businesses and parks. One of the biggest obstacles to site remediation and reuse was overcoming public outrage, fear, and lack of trust which made funding sources scarce.

Uranium mill tailings disposal facilities present unique problems with respect to siting, design, and long-term stability because their contents remain potentially hazardous for 100,000 years. Dawn Mining Company, operator of a uranium mill in Washington, undertook geological and geophysical studies relative to planned expansion of existing disposal facilities. Seismic refraction and reflection, resistivity, and ground magnetics data were integrated with limited drill data to determine the configuration of Quaternary sediments and the underlying basaltic and granitic bedrock. Analysis of multiple reflections and magnet modelling on a micro-computer with CRT graphics added detail to the interpretation.

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is investigating chemical and biological decontamination of complex wastewaters such as tailings pond water containing 280 ppm CN and 5 ppm Se as well as significant concentrations of arsenic, copper, iron, silver, and zinc. The most effective chemical procedure involves cyanide oxidation using hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite followed by selenium reduction using ferrous hydroxide. The effluent contains <l ppm CN and 20 ppb Se; concentrations of other major contaminants meet EPA drinking water standards. Preliminary research indicates that biological cyanide oxidation is possible even in highly alkaline solutions (pH 10.5) containing high cyanide concentrations; indigenous bacteria destroyed 85 pet of the cyanide. Exploratory research shows that other bacteria removed up to 79 pet of the selenium from chemically oxidized, low-cyanide water. These promising results may lead to a final processing scheme that involves a combination of chemical and biological techniques.

?Ellatzite Med? is one of the biggest mining companies in Bulgaria, processing about 12,000,000 t of ore per year. Waste materials left after extraction of copper concentrate are deposited in tailings dam ?Benkovski 2?. The hydraulic structure is built according to the downstream method, through hydrocyclonization where the downstream batter and the body of the wall are formed by the separated coarse sand particles of the separated tailings. In connection with the prolonged concession of Ellatzite Med and the enlarged capacity of Benkovski 2, the tailings dam has expanded on to the surrounding terrain. To guarantee a normal hydrocyclonization and build up of a tailings wall during waste deposition from the ore mill, the technological scheme of the hydraulic transport system of Benkovski 2 has been changed.

Large scale feasibility studies for the establishment of oil-seed and cellulose producing crops on mine tailings have been successfully conducted over 1 growing season with the purpose of these crops to be used as feedstock to the biofuels industry. An acid sulphide tailings impoundment in Copper Cliff, Ontario and a near neutral pH goldmine tailings impoundment in Timmins, Ontario were both tested by amending half hectare plots to approximately 1 m thick with residual biosolids from the pulp and paper industry and growing canola and corn on these plots. Full scale agricultural equipment was used to cultivate seed and harvest the plots to prove the full scale feasibility of farming on these biosolids. The vegetation development, growth, yield, quality and composition were assessed to identify the best species that would maximize biomass development for feedstock to the biofuels industry and carbon credits for the mining industry. Groundwater, biosolids and tailings chemistries were investigated to identify potential deleterious impacts of degrading organic matter on tailings metal mobility. Preliminary hydrologic investigations using moisture sensor profiles elucidate potential conservation of water in amended plots. Tailings amended with biosolids have the potential to provide the mining industry with carbon credits and supply feedstock to this new industry while reclaiming brownfields to a new level, utilizing industrial and municipal organic waste material.

BUNKER Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co. has three major sources of ore at present: high grade square-set ore, low grade caving ore, and low grade reclaimed washed jig tailing. These three ores constitute the feed to the 3000-tpd concentrator that produces lead-silver, zinc, and pyrite concentrates. Each ore has different characteristics of grindability, mineral particle size, composition, and content, but all are amenable to the same mill circuit and reagents. The gangue is primarily quartzite. The Bunker Hill concentrator is now using a coarse primary grind followed by a regrind of sand fractions of lead rougher tailing, lead middling, and lead cleaner tailing, and further regrind of sand fractions of zinc middling and zinc cleaner tailing. This is done in order to recover all valuable minerals at the largest size possible. The tendency to overgrind the ore particles, which are more easily ground than the gangue particles, is thereby reduced-lessening their loss in the flotation tailings. The coarse primary grind and regrind method has the advantages of: providing more selective grinding, minimizing sliming, giving a cleaner lead-zinc separation, and reducing mill requirements for reagents and water. Improved lead-zinc separation raises overall recovery and also increases lead and zinc recovery in the respective concentrates by keeping middling particles out of concentrate and tailing.

"The feed ore to Agh-Darreh gold processing plant (Takab City, Iran) contains 2 ppm Au, 7 ppm Ag, and 120 ppm Hg. After cyanide leaching of the feed at pH 10.4, 80% of the total mercury (in the form of cinnabar and metacinnabar) goes to the tailings dam. In this research, separation of mercury from the tailings by flotation was investigated. The effects of collector type and dosage, pH, and the number of cleaner stages were studied. The results showed that after two stages of cleaning a 40–62% recovery of Hg at a grade of 14.3% Hg is attainable. Recycle water from a test in which 50 g/t amyl xanthate and 30 g/t pine oil was used in the flotation stage showed no adverse effect on the leaching and adsorption of gold onto activated carbon.IntroductionMercury, most commonly found in the nature as the mineral cinnabar (HgS), is a hazardous substance because of its mobility and toxicity (Kyle et al., 2012). Roasting is the wellestablished treatment method for mercury ores, in which the sulphur is burned and volatilized and mercury recovered subsequently by cooling and condensation. However, for low-grade ores, flotation is mainly applied for primary concentration due to its comparatively low costs, low environmental hazards, and flexibility regarding feed variations (Bulatovic, 2007). Particularly, cinnabar can be easily recovered by flotation using pine oil and a collector such as xanthate (Bulatovic, 2007; Crozier, 1991). Floatability of cinnabar is reduced due to surface oxidation when it is exposed to the atmosphere after crushing. This problem can be eliminated by adding copper sulphate and lead nitrate or acetate. The best pH for cinnabar flotation is in the range of 6.5 to 8.5 according to Erspamer and Wells, (1954), who reported that cinnabar and stibnite can be floated with long-chain xanthate collectors and an alcohol frother, with cumulative recoveries of 97.8% and 94.7%, respectively. Lead acetate was used as an activator."

The risks associated with operating water reservoirs and tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are different because of their different purposes, methods of construction and operation, and characteristics of the materials impounded and their flow behaviour. Regardless of the differences, these two types of structures are often put in the same category when it comes to risk assessment and the application of relevant methodologies, which may result in unrealistic outcomes. In this paper we investigate whether it is possible to apply the risk ranking methodology designed for water reservoirs to TDFs and overview the key differences between these two types of structures. We also provide a comparative analysis of the results obtained by conducting a risk assessment of the operation of a TSF, applying the method recommended by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), and analyse the results using the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) technique. It is concluded that a more realistic evaluation of risk levels can be obtained by adopting a systematic approach to risk assessment in accordance with the traditional risk definition on which the FMEA technique is based.
