The rare earth elements (REEs) present in the Kiruna iron ore mine tailings are being considered as a new REE resource for the EU. These tailings, after beneficiation, contain approximately 5000 ppm of rare earths, concentrated in apatite and monazite minerals. To economically extract the REEs from these tailings the phosphorous contained within the apatite must also be extracted and the waste production of the process should be minimal. To achieve the extraction of REEs and phosphorous HCl and HNO3 were investigated as possible leaching agents. Based on the results a leaching process using HNO3 is proposed. This process produces H3PO4 from the apatite while simultaneously dissolving the REEs. The resulting leach liquor is then cooled to remove the unwanted Ca as Ca(NO3)2. Analysis of the leach liquor reveals extraction ratios of between 75% and 100% for the heavy REE (e.g. Y, Eu, Dy, …) and below 40% from the light REEs (i.e. Ce, La). Full phosphorous extraction was also achieved.

The results of a field-scale study involving in situ leaching of copper ore tailings using sulphuric acid as the leaching agent, injection wells to introduce the leaching solution and extraction wells to recover the copper-enriched pregnant leaching solution are presented. The study was performed at an abandoned tailings disposal site using a battery of injection and extraction wells. The medium was characterized through the determinations of physical, chemical, mineralogical, and hydro-dispersive properties based on laboratory and field tests, including a tritium tracer test, a pumping test, particle size analyses, and hydraulic conductivity tests. Numerous horizontal strata with different hydraulic conductivities were identified. A previously developed model was used to simulate the leaching of copper ore tailings. Although the study confirms the feasibility of using in situ leaching for recovery of residual copper from tailings deposits, the efficiency of the technology depends significantly on the medium stratigraphy and hydraulic conductivity.

Processing of lead-zinc and copper ores by Mount Isa Mines Limited produces large quantit- ies of concentrator tailings waste which is pumped as a slurry to special dams where the solids are allowed to settle and dry out. These areas are unattractive and show no signs of encroachment by plant life even though the surfaces of some dams have remained undisturbed for more than a decade. During 1970 Mount Isa Mines Limited commenced a long term research program in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, University of Queensland to deter- mine possible methods of establishing a plant cover on this material. Research has defined the major factors limiting plant growth in the tailings medium. Modification of the edaphic conditions through fertilizer inputs, particularly of phosphorus and nitrogen, and alteration of "soil" physical properties by incorporation of mulching mater- ials, provided conditions which allowed plant growth. The outstanding "soil" amendment treatment was incorporation of fly ash, a waste product of the company's coal fired power stations. A range of crop and pasture species have been selected which have grown well with adequate irrigation under the amended conditions in the field. Further research is assessing a range of native plant species and agronomic techniques to provide a stable plant cover on the tailings dams.

At this paper, Eirich will present its new tool for sinter analysis integrated to the sintering control system. For stabilization and optimal, continuous control of the sintering process, QualiMaster MT1, a device was developed which guarantees fully automatic representative sampling and material analysis and thus a high and stable sintering quality. Mining tailings often has a considerable proportion of valuable substances. In addition to this work, we will also present our mixing technology that allows the economic recovery of these mining tailings.

INTRODUCTION The composition of water used in the flotation process has always been of primary interest to the flotation metallurgist. It is by alteration of the chemistry of the water introduced to the process that flotation separation is effected. In only a few cases has it been necessary to treat available water prior to use in the process. In the past, flotation tailings were treated for the removal of solids via the tailings dam and water decanted from the dam was either recirculated to the process or discharged to the surface water system. The choice of recirculation or discharge was based upon water availability, effect of recycle water on the process, and economic considerations. The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 have charged the United States Environmental Protection Agency with establishing effluent limitations from point sources of discharge into the navigable water of the United States. A detailed study, sponsored by EPA, of the water of ore processing plants took place in 1974 and 1975 and guidelines for these plants will presumably have been published by the time this paper has been presented(1). The action of many of the individual states preceded the EPA in this attempt to regulate the quality of the water discharged from industrial point sources. Even with recycle of tailings water, some water is discharged from tailings dams into the substrata and at least one state is currently preparing guidelines for the quality of water discharged into the substrata.

The flotation of Azara barite tailings was investigated using crude rubber nut oil (RNOc), refined rubber nut oil (RNOR) and oleic acid as fatty acid collectors. Chemical characterization of the rubber nut oils indicated high acidity, high saponification values and high iodine indexes, which are indicative of a high fatty acid compositions. The Azara barite tailings analyzed 64.6% BaSO4 by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Gravity and magnetic separation techniques yielded a BaSO4 concentrate with a grade of 74.8% and a recovery of 92.5%. Barium sulfate grades of 90.0%, 92.8% and 94.8% with recoveries of 80.3%, 85.4% and 86.7% were achieved with collector dosages of 750g/t crude rubber nut oils, refined rubber nut oils and oleic acid, respectively. Hence, rubber nut oils are effective fatty acid collectors for the flotation of barite tailings.

Wind erosion can be a major cause of the loss and dispersion of tailings material from a tailings dam into its surrounding environment. Such dust dispersion can be a serious nuisance, as well as a health hazard to inhabitants in nearby settlements, and can also damage the health of animals, degrade crops, making them less marketable, and cause soil and water pollution. The problem of wind erosion can affect tailings dams in all types of climate, but becomes worse as climatic aridity increases. Because clouds of dust are often observed billowing across the top surfaces of tailings dams in dry windy weather, there is a common misconception that the dust arises from wind erosion of the top surface. As a result, much effort and money is vainly spent on treating the tops of tailings dams to prevent dust generation, whereas the slopes of the dams are the true major dust source. This paper briefly reviews what is known of erosion of tailings dams and then proceeds to describe the mechanics of wind erosion in general, and how it affects tailings dams in particular. Finally, recommendations are made for mitigating wind erosion of tailings dams and the resulting blowing dust.

The research and development of new, more selective collectors in order to improve flotation efficiency represent one of the main priorities in the development of innovative technologies pertaining to flotation separation of various substances and minerals. The use of collectors’ mixtures is considered as the universal instrument for ensuring necessary proportion of chemically and physically sorbed collecting reagents in every individual case. Currently hard-dressed, refractory ores and man-made raw materials, which are characterized by low content of valuable components, fine dissemination of mineral assemblages and similar technological properties of constituent minerals, are widely involved in the recycling processes. The possibility of processing tailings, which are left after flotation beneficiation, has been considered in the case study of tailings of the Zhezkazgan beneficiation plant and the Tishinsk copper ore deposit with utilization of the modified multifunctional flotation reagents. Modified poly-functional collector is the mixture of composite Aerofloat, TC-1000 and butyl xanthate. Reactants ratio is 1:1:3. The advantage of the suggested flotation reagents is that they are composed of two polar groups and have a long hydrocarbon radical. This structure, being in the water during flotation process, plays a dual role: first, as a collector adsorbing on the mineral surface it produces metal complexes with polar groups in the form of bridges; second, apolar radicals flocculate valuable slimed components, thereby intensifying flotation process. It has been shown that flotation of Zhezkazgan tailings with utilization of the lesser modified reagent amount compared to butyl xanthate has enabled to produce crude copper concentrate with 13.0 % copper grade and 80.22 %recovery. Compared to the baseline technology, copper content of crude concentrate has been increased by 5.1 % and the recovery by 31.4 %. It is shown that tailings flotation of the Tishinsky field by applying modified collector allows for increase of the of useful components extraction in a collective concentrate with: copper 9.63 %, lead for 8.41%, zinc 9.2 %, iron 2.73 %, gold 3.57 %.

In April 1986, FMC- Paradise Peak Corporation began milling at the Paradise Peak Mine, which is located eight miles southeast of Gabbs, Nevada. The mill processes about 4DOO tons per day of ore through the mill and cyanide leaching circuit. Gold and silver are recovered via the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process. Tailings are routed to a tailings pond located about one half mile southeast of the mill facility. The pond, lined with 60 mil MDPE, was 25 acres at the start of the cyanide detoxification, covers 90 acres and will ultimately cover 180 acres. Solution is reclaimed from the pond and circulated back to the mill.

Mineralogical characterization of the tailings showed the deportment of Ni to be similar in the Vale and Glencore tailings, with 60% of the total Ni locked in pyrrhotite, and the balance 40% associated with pentlandite. The overall Ni dissolution was correlated with the individual dissolution extents of pyrrhotite and pentlandite as functions of four leaching regimes: ‘anoxic acid’ (with and without pH control), ‘oxic acid’ (oxygen sparging), ‘oxic acid’ (air sparging), and ‘oxic ferric’ (air sparging). The results showed that the maximum Ni dissolution was obtained during the pH controlled oxic acid leach with oxygen sparging at pH 1.5, while the anoxic acid leach at pH 1.5 resulted in minimum Ni dissolution (10–15%) from pyrrhotite. An overall Ni mass balance showed that pyrrhotite and pentlandite dissolve simultaneously in the presence of Fe(III) and oxygen, in contrast to the preferential dissolution of pyrrhotite in the absence of Fe(III). Sulphur mass balances revealed that the yield of elemental sulphur is maximized (65%) during the oxic Fe(III) leach at pH 0.6. Furthermore, the kinetics of Ni leaching and elemental sulphur formation from pyrrhotite tailings leached with ferric sulphate between 55–80°C was investigated at constant oxidation-reduction potential. Elemental sulphur yield increased with increasing temperature, but no observable trend could be linked to ferric or ferrous ion concentration.

INTRODUCTION Public opinion, over the effect of industrial development on the environment, has required government to institute guidelines for the protection of the environment both during the development of and after the decommissioning of mines. In no other area of mining has this requirement been more consistently applied in recent times than in the development of uranium mines. Uranium mines have been a focal point because of the very real uncertainties associated with the detrimental effects of radionuclides and the possible hazards of radiation. In order to determine if there is an environmental effect caused by a development or the storage of the mine waste as tailings, it is necessary to know what the quality of the environment was prior to the production of the tailings. This is the reason for baseline data programs. It is neither technically nor economically feasible to completely define the environment in any given region. Therefore, judgement decisions must be made prior to the development as to what aspects of the environment are more likely to be affected by the presence of the tailings, and to what degree. These decisions have evolved over a period of time based on information generated from existing facilities, scientific research, and the development of strong public opinions. This process is not static, but evolves with the growth of information and the technological developments which permit greater control of industrial pollution and waste management. A well-designed baseline program will reflect changes in science, technology and public attitude, even in advance of government regulations to enforce policy changes. RATIONALE FOR PREOPERATIONAL BASELINE STUDIES There are three distinct phases to be considered in the construction of an environmental assessment for a uranium mine tailings containment facility. I. Pre-operational 2. Operational 3. Post-operational (decommissioning and long term).

THrough the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas I am permitted to give a summary of some of the results obtained in leaching slimes tailings in a series of experiments conducted under my direction at Douglas, Ariz., during the past year. While the test run for which the data are given deals with a particular case, much of the work is general in its application and may therefore be of interest. This work was done upon the ores of the Burro Mountain Copper CO. A description of the geology of the district will be found in the paper by R. E. Somers published in this volume, p. 604. The mineral is pyrite and chalcocite very finely disseminated throughout the gangue and a characteristic of all the ores is the large amount of alumina present. A representative analysis of the particular ore under consideration would be about as follows: Cu, per cent..................... 2.35 S, per cent...................... 3.0 Ag, ounces per ton.............. 0.05 CaO, per cent.................. 0.5 Au............................ The ore would have to be quite finely crushed to liberate the mineral for leaching; concentrating after crushing would cost but a few cents a ton; and a higher total reeovery would result from leaching tailings rather than ore. 2. Rough concentration would yield a suitable material for roasting to make sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in connection with the leaching scheme. 3. Such a program put the question of cost vs. recovery on a basis where flotation and discarding of tailings were directly comparable. Old tailings from Zn, Au, Cu, and Ni mining operations were characterized. Their mineralogical variation in depth is compared with matching pore water and solids chemistry. A geochemical model was used to predict minerals precipitating from pore water solutions. These are compared with actual secondary minerals occurring. The degree to which the precipitation of secondary minerals controls the sulfate and iron concentration of the pore water was also investigated. The results obtained are related to the selection of the most appropriate modes of tailings deposition.

It is not at all surprising that causticized potato and potato derived amylopectin starch solutions performed much better than their parent starches. Some preparation is required to rupture the starch granules to effect the polymeric adsorption and interparticle bridging necessary for selective flocculation. In laboratory work comparing the deslime performance of causticized and autoclave cooked laboratory corn starch solution preparations, it was found that higher deslime weight rejections, with attendant proportionally greater iron unit losses, occurred with the causticized starch. These results may be specific to the ore involved but they do suggest that cooking and causticizing cause different starch granule rup- ture and/or starch breakdown, which have an effect on desliming response. I calculated from the data in the article that the slimes product grades were high - 24.3% and 20.3% Fe when 53.7% and 54.5% Fe concentrate products were obtained, respectively, in Table 4, and 21% Fe with a 62.6% Fe concentrate in Table 5 - using the natural tailings sample, which had a head of 34.3% Fe. It may be advisable for the authors to consider different starch preparations in future investigations. The combination of upgrading and selectivity results presented in Table 4 are not as good as the authors suggest. The authors' claim that a system has been developed to produce saleable concentrates from the Kudremukh tailings is quite disconcerting. There are many hurdles yet to be crossed before commercial application of selective flocculation becomes possible because differ- ences between the very small-scale laboratory tests conducted and commercial application are rather large. Among the many differences are varying circuit feed grades that will occur from use of tailings, the apparent face that much lower tailings grades will be encountered in practice (it is much easier to achieve a high concentrate grade with reasonable recoveries using 34.3% Fe tailings as in the study rather than 25.3% Fe tailings grades that the plant apparently averages), the hydraulic nature of the thickeners used in operations compared to the static system used in laboratory tests, the different size distributions that will be obtained from a plant closed grinding- classification circuit, and differences in water used in a plant operation and the laboratory. The authors wrote that it was necessary to overgrind to be sure that the coarse gangue would not settle with the iron oxide floccules. This situation is likely to be exaggerated in commercial operations where it is assumed cyclones would be used for classification. Because cyclone classification is greatly influenced by particle densities, there will probably be an even greater difference in size between the iron and gangue particles in the plant, which would make the gangue slightly coarser still in relation to the iron. This would make the selective flocculation-desliming separations using the procedure employed by the authors even more difficult and, using the dispersant system the authors employed, greater overgrinding would be required. To grind finer to minimize the coarse gangue in the flocculated iron oxides is quite inefficient and appears not to broach the problem. The actual problem appears to be insufficient dispersion of the ground pulp. In this situation, addition of a dispersant would likely be required to attain a sufficiently high pulp dispersion level to efficiently effect a selective flocculation-desliming separation. Although the very coarse particles would still have a tendency to settle with the floccules, it probably would be found unnecessary to overgrind as much as indicated. Use of an optimum combination of dispersant and pH modifying reagents may also significantly improve the selectivity of desliming. Additionally, although it is possible that sufficient dispersion may be obtained by pH control alone in some situations, it is quite probable that added dispersity was obtained in the reported work from using distilled water. It is research experience that distilled water enhances dispersion. In commercial operations it may not be expected that sufficient dispersion will be obtained by pH control alone, unless the water used in the process is by nature quite dispersive. Overall, a change in the Kudremukh tailings dispersant scheme appears necessary where a dispersant is used in conjunction with a pH modifying reagent. With this change, different dispersion-flocculation responses will result that would have to be further evaluated. Therefore, it is still an open question whether an efficient and effective selective floccula- tion separation using Kudremukh tailings may be obtained that will produce saleable concentrates.

Over the past 15 years, the mining industry has begun to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development and sustainable mining practice across the life cycle of mineral operations. This requires addressing economic issues, community impacts and concerns and environmental protection, and is captured in part by the phrase ‘design for sustainability’ (McClellan et al, 2009). Over the same period, the industry has seen a gradual decline in ore grades for many mineral commodities. As a result, large volumes of tailings and mine waste rock are being produced around the world, and it is expected that the annual production volumes of these materials will increase, even if there is not a significant change in the demand for materials.Another related thread of change has been the realisation that societies need to move away from linear economies (raw materials, production, consumption, disposal) towards more circular ones. This will help societies become more resource efficient, which is defined by the United Nations Environment Programme as reducing the total environmental impact of the production and consumption of goods and services, from raw material extraction to final use and disposal. The goal is to create more with less and deliver greater value with less input. Circular economies require thinking in terms of the waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle, recover, landfill).The challenge is that the waste hierarchy was originally designed to address embodied mineral content in products rather than mine waste and tailings generation. It will need to be reconsidered in a mine life cycle context, focusing on a value-based conception of waste (Van Ewijk and Stegemann, in press).In parallel to these changes, it has remained an imperative in the mining industry to dispose of these waste materials as economically as possible while protecting the environment. Single handling of these materials has been the main target, which reduces the life cycle costs of their management but may make reuse of waste and tailings technically more difficult or economically infeasible.This presentation explores a rethinking of the large volume earthen material waste issue at mines. The underlying theme is that some or all of these materials can be valuable resources for the future that can positively contribute to sustainable development. These resources can offer economic gains to firms, communities and societies; contribute to environmental well-being; enhance social interactions with the previously mined landscape if handled properly; and, with proper policies in place, reduce governance commitments. Each of these topics will be briefly explored. Residual cyanide in cyanidation tailings can be detoxified by its oxidation to cyanate, as in the Inco and Degussa processes. However, cyanate, the product of detoxification and other oxidation processes, may be reduced to cyanide in reducing environments, e.g., deepwater discharge of cyanidation tailings. This study shows that the reduc-tion of cyanate to cyanide occurs and that the reduction rate increases with decreasing solution redox potential. Solutions with lower pH favor the reduction rate. No significant difference was observed between the results of tests prepared with distilled water and seawater, and the presence of cyanidation solid tailings does not show an effect on the reduction. Because cyanate can be reduced to toxic cyanide, causing environmental concerns, the deepwater discharges of cyanidation tailings must be handled carefully.

It is estimated that the tailings dam of the Mouteh Gold Mine, in Iran, contains more than 770 kg of gold. Microscopic analysis reveals that sulphide minerals and active carbon are the main sources of the gold in the tailings residue. Flotation and cyanidation tests on the samples of tailings were conducted. Flotation concentrates, containing around 87.79% of the gold, which were associated with sulphide minerals, were recovered. By regrinding, roasting, and cyanidation of the flotation concentrate, the gold dissolution recovery was in the range of 87.8 to 98.4%. As part of an investigation of possible water-saving measures at Anglo American Platinum's Mogalakwena Mine in Limpopo, South Africa, a study was made of conditions on the wet beaches of two adjacent tailings dams, each serving a separate plant on the mine. For one of the dams, a special catamaran was designed and constructed to enable the full length of wet beaches to be accessed and sampled immediately after a layer of tailings had been deposited. For the other dam, the wet beach was accessed using conveyor belting and scaffold planks. The length of the beaches was 400 m on the first dam, and 200 m on the second, and each was sampled at 50 m intervals. The parameters reported in this paper, for both beaches, are: > Water content profiles along each beach from the surface to as deep as 2.5 m, at times ranging from 12 hours to 6 weeks from the end of deposition > Particle size distributions at the surface, down the full length of the beaches > Measurements of feed relative density, tonnage and volume, decant and drain flow volumes, as well as rainfall and evaporation for both dams. The surface water contents shortly after deposition have been used to establish the relative density of the settled, decanted tailings and its variation down the beach. This data, combined with the decant and drainage flows, is used to establish the calculated and actual water recoveries from both dams.

Across the globe, it is a common scenario that tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are being decommissioned; however, their subsequent impact on the local environment and landscape can often be overlooked during the mine planning process. In addition, the requirement of a cover system for a facilities closure may not be a priority until the latter stages of the mine/mill operation when potential cover materials may have been utilised elsewhere or, worse, buried. Developing a conceptual design and closure plan for a TSF early in a mining venture is fundamental to its success once operations have ceased. If a cover system is a planned component for rehabilitation of a TSF, it is vital that its design is appropriate to the facility and any local site constraints, such as climate and cover system material availability. It is also strongly recommended that various cover system options are physically trialled at the site by using performance-monitoring instrumentation. Through this process, an informed decision can be made regarding the most appropriate cover system design to meet any regulatory and stakeholder closure objectives and criteria specific to the site in question; however, in order for the cover system’s performance to be determined through on-site trials, it is essential that an appropriate instrumentation design is utilised. Often, little attention is paid to the data that is being obtained, and its importance may only become apparent after several years of monitoring at an expense to the venture. This should not be the case. Many sites have used an appropriate initial planning stage to understand what is required for the successful closure of a TSF, how it can be achieved and how monitoring data can be utilised to prove, or otherwise, that a cover system design will be a success.CITATION:Barritt, R and Scott, P, 2015. The growing demand for iron ore from Western Australia has led to an increased focus on the development of magnetite and lower grade iron ore deposits. The need to process and beneficiate the ore from these projects can result in the generation of significant quantities of iron ore tailings over the life of a project. Over the coming decades, the management of iron ore tailings will become a significant aspect of the mining landscape in Western Australia.The tailings generated from iron ore projects differ signifi cantly from other mineral tailings currently produced in Western Australia. Iron ore tailings are generated on a scale not matched by any other mineral process and can often contain asbestiform or potentially acid forming components. New iron ore projects are coming under increased environmental scrutiny because of their large scale operations and the sensitive environments in which they occur. This combination of factors creates some unique challenges for the management of tailings generated by iron ore mining in Western Australia.This paper presents the fi ndings of two studies conducted in recent years to overcome the challenges posed by iron ore tailings. The paper discusses the role of laboratory testing in the development of management strategies for asbestiform minerals in tailings. It also presents a numerical modelling approach for evaluating the rates of rise in the storage of magnetite tailings. The paper concludes by outlining how the findings of these studies can be applied to reduce tailings management costs, lower risks and improve environmental outcomes for the management of tailings from iron ore mining.
