Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. The Hidden Valley process plant has recently undertaken a program to relieve process flow bottlenecks and improve process automation. An environment of cost reduction and restrained capital necessitated solutions that primarily utilised existing equipment and internal resources. Removing bottlenecks relieved pressure from a strained circuit that was unable to maintain consistent performance. Improved process automation firstly stabilised the process, then allowed the circuit to sustainably operate at the expanded capacity limits. These allowed implementation of an operating approach that focused process operators towards identifying and resolving process disturbances in advance. Viburnum, located in the foothills of the Ozarks in south-east Missouri, is the site of a modern lead mining and milling operation. Two mines are currently producing a total of 5,000 tons per day and a third mine is in the final development stage, with full production scheduled for late this year (1964). These mines will supply the tonnage required to keep the Viburnum mill operating at a full capacity of 7,000 tons per day for many years. The efficient underground mining operation is completely trackless. Drill jumbos are used to break the ore in a room and pillar method of mining. Transloaders, or St. Joe shovels, and trucks do the loading and hauling. The Viburnum mill has a world-wide reputation as a most efficient operation. This is due to the extensive use of automatic process controls, and labour saving materials handling facilities. Six tests were made by the Alaska Station of the Bureau of Mines on a sample of black sand delivered to the station by Messrs. James, Eagan & Griffen from Fairbanks Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska, to devise a method of recovering the gold content. More than 90 per cent of this black sand consisted of magnetite and garnet which can be separated magnetically. The Station has no equipment for magnetic separation other than an electromagnet similar to the one used by Day and Richards, (Day, D.T., and Richards, R.H., Investigations of Black Sands from Placer Mines, U. S. Geol. Survey, Bull. 285, 1906, pp. 150-163), which can only be used satisfactorily on small samples. To treat the entire lot of black sand with this machine would have been impracticable. Therefore only a small part of the sand was so treated, the rest being divided into five lots in order to obtain comparative results from other methods of treatment.

Australia has an enviable global reputation as a leader in health and safety outcomes in the hazardous industry of mining, in part due to an increased application of risk management regarding operational planning and mining practice. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) initiated a major project, RISKGATE, to build, capture and deliver a national body of knowledge to assist companies with the management of risk in coal mining. The online system contains information for tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives underground, explosives open cut, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human–machine interface, tailings dams, occupational hygiene and inrush. In 2014, RISKGATE is developing content for fitness for work (fatigue, drugs, alcohol, physical well-being, psychosocial well-being).This paper analyses underground mining fatalities in Australia and the United States since 2002 and introduces RISKGATE with a focus on the knowledge base for management of hazards in underground operations. Through capturing coal industry expert operational knowledge, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover within the mining industry. The White Rock area of the Boiling Springs manganese-iron deposits comprises about 3,200 acres of land in Monroe Township, Cumberland County, Pa. (See fig. 1.) This property was brought to the: attention of the Bureau of Mines by Pennsylvania Geological Survey Bulletin 128, entitled "Manganese Ores of Pennsylvania" by R. M. Foose. It was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in August 1942 and was further investigated by the Bureau by churn drilling and underground development during the period December 1942 to February 1944. Beneficiation tests were made on samples of the ore. This report describes the work done during the investigation and presents the results obtained.

Sandur Schist Belt of Karnataka Craton constitutes a hub of iron ore mining activity. The iron ore deposits of the region are closely associated with Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ), Shale, phyllites, & Graywackes. The gradual depletion of high-grade iron ores due to extensive utilization has necessitated the exploitation of low-grade iron ore including BHQ, which are available abundantly in different parts of India. In the present investigation, BHQ samples from Kammaturu mines of Sandur schist belt was studied to assess the possibility of upgrading the iron content to the maximum possible extent, so that it may find the better use in iron and steel industries. The sample collected from the study area analyzing 39.76% Fe, 39.8% SiO2, 0.66% Al2O3, and 1.92% LOI was subjected to beneficiation studies. The mineralogical studies reveals that the samples are predominately consists of hematite as an iron mineral and quartz as gangue mineral. Liberation studies and chemical analysis were carried out prior to the beneficiation process, which is flotation. Cationic Reverse flotation studies were carried out and discussed by varying different process variables such as feed size, depressant, collector cum frother dosage & pH. The results obtained are encouraging with an appreciable improvement in the iron content up to 62.8% Fe with Fe recovery of 50.43%. The concentrate obtained from the flotation can be used for pellet making process.

"Activated carbon is used to recover gold in solution from various gold circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes; however, the characteristics and durability of the activated carbon can vary. Handling this medium poses challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuit discharge. Additionally, adsorbed gold on carbon fines can be lost to the discharge. The studies in this paper aim to standardize laboratory methods for testing activated carbon qualities specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, platelet content, wet attrition resistance, gold kinetics, and gold loading. L’étude portait sur la composition granulométrique, la teneur des plaquettes, la résistance au frottement humide, la cinétique de l’or et l’adsorption de l’or, à savoir la capacité du charbon actif à adsorber l’or sur une période spécifique. Although gold losses are inevitable in the milling process, operators often focus on reducing gold loss to tailings. One focus area that is important in gold recovery is optimizing the use of activated carbon and examining potential changes to realize improved economics for carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes. Granular activated carbon (Figure 1) is widely used for gold extraction from slurries containing gold-cyanide complexes. This activated carbon—produced from charred coconut shells—is well suited because of its adsorption kinetics, gold-loading capacity, attrition resistance, and ability to be reactivated. The extraction process using activated carbon technology involves adsorbing gold from an aqueous leachate; the gold is dissolved using a cyanide salt and consequently a dicyanoaurate(I) ion (Au(CN)2–) is formed, as noted in equation 1."

This paper describes the results of convergence measurements conducted about five years for the re-use gate roadways at OAL lignite mine in Turkey. Double lignite seams separated with a marn layer, are mined with long-wall retreating mining system at the mine. Rib pillar has been abandoned and gate roadways were planned to be packed for the re-use of full extraction. Various packing systems have been attempted, namely three rows of woodenchock, one row of wooden chock plus concrete wall and concrete wall only. The re-use of maingate roadways packed with wooden chock yielded 62% of closure. Lastly developed concrete packing of 3 meters wide and specially developed support set composed of three friction props and a cap, which is a modification of yieldable set, have successfully maintained the main and tail gate roadways stability with a total vertical convergence of 32%. Good correlation has been established between pack stiffness and floor heave as well as maingate and tailgate convergences. The elimination of rib pillars by re-use of gate roadways increased the coal recovery by 20% and decreased the development/production ratio from 0.065 m3/ton to0.022 m3/ton.

THE property of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, is in Dome township, Red Lake area, northwestern Ontario, a hundred miles north of Kenora and close to the Manitoba border. 'Planes of Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Limited, serve the district daily, except Sundays, from Kenora, Ontario, and Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, passengers being trans-ported from Winnipeg to Lac du Bonnet by car. Freight is handled by the Patricia Transportation Company. It is brought in from Hudson, Ontario, on the Canadian National railway, in summer by water and in winter by tractor trains over the frozen lakes. The first staking on the property was done during the 'rush' of 1926 and 1927 by William M. Cochenour, and on April 30th, 1928, a syndicate was formed, taking in claims of W. M. Cochenour and Dan Willans and H. G. Young. Surface trenching was carried on almost continuously until 1934. In October, 1932, Ventures Limited took an option on the property, and in December of that year they carried out an extensive diamond drilling programme, but considering the results did not justify further work, they relinquished the option. In July, 1934, further surface work was carried out under the supervision of W. P. Mackle and, on the strength of his report, Noah Timmins Incorporated took an option on the property and agreed to make an initial expenditure of $100,000 on development work. This was carried out under the direction of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines and included the sinking of a shaft to a depth of 165 feet, establishment of a level at the 150-foot horizon, and some 1,900 lineal feet of drifting and cross-cutting. The results obtained from this work were not considered of sufficient promise and the option was terminated in August, 1935. Mr. Cochenour then approached Alex Mackenzie and associates, and the present Company, Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, was organized on April 9th, 1936, and sufficient money was raised to continue operations. Under the direction of W. P. Mackle, the shaft was deepened and a second level was established at the 275-foot horizon; but, due to several adverse reports by outside engineers, it was found impossible to raise sufficient money to carry on the work and operations were suspended in December, 1937. In January, 1939, an agreement was entered into with Gold Eagle Gold Mines for the milling in their plant of some Cochenour ore. A total of 4,959 tons was treated, and the results were so encouraging that further finances were raised by C. A. Gentles & Company, of Toronto. Following further development in the mine, it was decided to erect a mill. Construction was started on September 1st and the mill was turned over on November 29th. The first gold brick was poured on December 23rd.

In gold exploration and metallurgical testing, the role of the mineralogist is to assist in solving problems with regard to (a) sampling, (b) gold occurrences, and (c) petrologic classifications of host rocks. The presence of "coarse" gold as a sampling problem can be overcome by various methods, including "screen fire assays," screened analyses and special gravity techniques which may be used to determine distributions of "coarse" versus fine gold. Determinations of mineralogic associations of gold usually require special separation techniques, accompanied by fire-AA-mineralogic assays of the products. After accurate mineralogic analyses are obtained for various products, quantitative distributions of refractory gold associations can be calculated by the use of simultaneous equations. Petrologic classifications are required by the geologist for mapping and interpretation of the various rocks. After the petrology and mineralogic differences of the rock units are determined, x-ray diffraction analyses of analytical pulps can be used for lithologic logging of drill cores. XRD logging is an efficient method for correlating lithologic units and alteration trends throughout a gold prospect.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests on samples of two Florida phosphate slimes t6 devise a technique to recover phosphate currently dis-carded because of its fine size. A flotation technique was devised to recover the phosphate contained in two fractions of each slime: the plus 37um fraction and the plus 20-um fraction. The technique involved conditioning the flotation feed with sodium silicate and a fatty acid-fuel oil emulsion, floating a rougher phosphate concentrate, and cleaning the concentrate in two cleaner stages with sodium silicate added to each for gangue depression. Concentrates containing 21.0 to 32.3 pct P20S were produced with recoveries of 68.1 to 84.2 pct of the P20S con-tained in the flotation feed.

The purification process of water-mining carnallite and rough potassium chloride concentrate from Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group Co. Ltd. are investigated by the preprocessing-reverse flotation technology respectively. The results show that the impurities such as calcium sulfate and sodium chloride can be effectively removed from water-mining carnallite ore and rough potassium chloride concentrate by the new technology, the low-sodium carnallite is obtained and the final potassium chloride product greatly upgraded. The content and the recovery of KCl in the low-sodium carnallite are 25.78% and 97.50%, meanwhile the content of NaCl, CaSO4 in the low-sodium carnallite are 0.56% and 0.24%, and the removal of sodium chloride and calcium sulfate in the low-sodium carnallite are 97.48%, 85.10% respectively. The KCl content and recovery of high quality potassium chloride product are 98.25%, 96.70%, and CaSO4 content is 0.40% with 83.24% calcium sulfate removed in the high quality potassium chloride product.

The Doc Run Company and its predecessors have been mining for over 130 years utilising the room and pillar mining method. This method has left approximately 20 per cent of the orebody in the remaining pillars. The original design and planning for the mines did not include extensive pillar extraction. This paper summarises the introduction of the pillar extraction and backfill techniques which have been implemented since 1991. These techniques include the use of low cost fill walls up to 20 in in height and the use of stinger trucks for topping off the fill. In conjunction with these accomplishments, much experience and confidence has been gained in the use of numerical modelling as a method of predicting pillar stability as the mining of pillars progresses. These advances have led to pillar extraction hecoming a major portion of the overall production and have added to the mine life of Doe Run's six operating mines.

"In 2017, Petra Diamonds completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose diamond processing plant at Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM). The design of CDM’s milling circuit is unconventional in that it comprises an autogenous (AG) mill with a grate discharge with large ports, low-revolution jaw crushers, and high-pressure grinding roll crushers with large operating gaps. In this paper we review the design to provide guidance on what is expected from the milling circuit and to demonstrate how the design aims to address challenges experienced in the old plant, which was based on staged crushing technology. We assessed the performance of the CDM AG milling circuit from commissioning and early production stages to examine its impact along multiple dimensions. In the assessment we sought to understand the lessons from our milling circuit regarding diamond liberation, energy consumption, and the future of diamond processing as a whole. IntroductionCullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), previously known as Premier Mine, is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Petra Diamonds is a leading independent diamond mining group and a growing supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. Petra Diamonds is listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ‘PDL’. Petra’s total resource of 305 million carats ranks third by size after De Beers and ALROSA (Petra Diamonds, 2018).CDM was established in 1902. The mine rose to prominence in 1905, when the 3106 carat Cullinan Diamond — the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found — was discovered there. The mine has produced over 750 stones that are larger than 100 carats and more than a quarter of all the world's diamonds that are larger than 400 carats. Cullinan is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds (Petra Diamonds, 2018)."

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, 150 km southwest of Ciudad Juarez. The ore deposit was discovered in 1979, and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2400 tpd from an ore reserve of 8.5M tonnes. Grades average about 8 % Zn, 0.5 % Pb, 0.2 % Cu and 50 g Ag per tonne. Substantial inflows of water into the under-ground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark was operated through a joint venture, Minera Bismark, S.A. de C.V., with U.S. and Mexican partners, but since early 1993, it is wholly Mexican-owned and operated.

Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent on improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silverbearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores that because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.

The Cadia Mine is located 25kms South West of Orange in the central west of New South Wales (NSW), Australia (Figure 1). Orange is a major regional centre with a population of 35,000 people. Cadia has a history of mining and exploration dating back to 1851 and shortly after the first Australian gold rush at Ophir, north of Orange. Newcrest Mining commenced an exploration program at Cadia Hill in 1992. This identified a substantial zone of copper and gold mineralization. Subsequent resource definition drilling defined an orebody with a mineable reserve of 200 million tonnes of ore with an average gold grade of 0.74g/t and 0.17\ copper. A full feasibility study commenced in 1994, approvals to proceed with development were granted in September 1996 and the processing plant was commissioned in July 1998. The project came in on budget at A$440 million and on time, 24 months from design to construction. The estimated operating cost at the time of commissioning was A$8.85/t of mill feed.
