A property based dynamic model of flotation was built and validated for training purposes. The model is based on the work of the AMIRA P9 project. The recovery of each particle with composition and size is calculated in a given simulation step. The model takes into account machine and operational parameters such as air flowrate and froth height. The model was created using fullscale test data on Pyhlisalmi Cu-Zn-pyrite ore with flotation kinetics of multiphase particles determined. Simulation and validation shows that model can predict the dynamic behavior of the process accurately enough for training purposes.

Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Exxaro Sands Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa (see Figure 1). The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. Inflated commodity prices and increasing operating costs demands greater attention to the management of process performance and the company wide coordination of resources. Consequently, the task of deploying operational/technical skills and budgets into the most appropriate parts of the business assumes great importance in order to increase productivity from its capital assets. The mineral sands industry is under the same sort of economic scrutiny that all other industries find themselves, and as such, Exxaro – Namakwa Sands has taken the strategic initiative to improve overall resource utilisation within the processing steps and to measure the costs associated with obtaining this value.This paper provides details of the successful implementation of a Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) at Namakwa Sands to recover primary and secondary zircon products from the wet gravity (quartz) rejects generated and stockpiled at the Mineral Separation plant (MSP).

This project was specifically aimed at using increased acceleration separation, as a method to optimize the recovery of gold in an ore body mainly consisting of hematite where the specific gravity of gold is much higher in comparison to the carrying material, making it possible to separate gold from other materials like silica, base metals and their oxides, usually associated with gravitation-gold-recovery-processes. The ore body investigated in this project originated from a gold reef containing a large portion of gold locked inside the gold pyrite complexes, which was mined and treated in a conventional way. After gold extraction, the material was pumped to a tailings dump and the gold extraction of this dump was investigated. In order to assemble a concentration plant setup, the head grade and size distribution of the dump and bulk sample were determined accurately. Chemical analysis and mineralogical examination were done on a representative sample of the bulk sample, to determine the chemical composition of the material. The results obtained thereof were evaluated and a pilot plant was configured. A bulk sample was processed in the pilot plant and the results were evaluated. The results at optimum acceleration forces applied, resulted in a recovery of 5% of the mass, with a gold concentrate of 90 g/t Au, which represented 58% recovery of the gold. The hematite with high specific gravity as main phase positively influenced the high acceleration separation process. It proved that if the specific gravity of particles in a suspension were increased, high acceleration separation could be applied effectively to separate much smaller particle sizes.

WHEN I was getting data for my books on ore dressing, I traveled across the continent, visiting a great many mills, always accompanied by my vanning shovel, and I got to be a joke among the millmen. They would say "Here comes the Professor with his vanning shovel." With the aid of this vanning shovel, I examined the tailings of all the mills I visited and I found it to be universally true that they contained some extremely fine, free mineral. I looked everywhere to see if I could find a machine or a process that would save this fine mineral. But nowhere did I find anything that made any bid for success until I visited the Kennedy mill, with its Gates canvas plant, on the Mother Lode of California. There I found that the tailings of the Frue vanners were put into a one-spigot classifier of good design which yielded a spigot product entirely free from this fine, free mineral which only assayed 40c. to the ton in gold. The overflow was extremely fine and as¬sayed $3 to the ton. This overflow was fed to ten canvas tables each 10 ft. square, with the grain of the canvas running across the table to make for the roughest surface. The canvas used was No. 6 cotton duck sail cloth.

Flotation, as with most engineering disciplines, involves testwork. Commonly this means going from lab scale to pilot scale to industrial scale. It is important to conduct tests to identify key parameters and to optimize even at the lab scale. To reduce the number of tests while maximizing the information, it is necessary to use Design of Experiment and Statistical Analysis. In this communication Fractional Factorial Design was used to identify the effect of 7 main factors on barite flotation recovery from jig gravity tailings at the Dorrin Kashan operation. The factors include: pH, collector and depressant dosage, impeller speed (RPM), pulp dilution, particle size and flotation time. By analysis of the output with Minitab software all factors were shown to have an effect. Among the factors, pH and flotation time have an interaction effect but the others have wise effect as an interaction effect and main effect. Finally, reliability tests at pH= 9, RPM= 1000, collector 1 000g/ton, depressant l 750g/ton, particle size 90 µm, flotation time 90 s, pulp dilution 23 % solids, the optimum level of each factor, were done. At the optimum level a barite concentrate with average specific gravity 4.308 g/cm3, average grade 93.72% and average recovery 90.04% was produced from the jig tail.

Mount Isa Mines Limited operates one of the worldÆs largest underground mines in North West Queensland. ItÆs mining and smelting complex produces copper anode, crude lead bullion (containing silver), and zinc concentrate. Copper is recovered in the Copper Concentrator from chalcopyrite ore, converter smelter slag and rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag via grinding and flotation operations. During 2002 a project to optimise cleaner circuit capacity was commenced. Its aims were to minimise copper losses and minimise slag/chalcopyrite cross contamination by reconfiguring existing flotation equipment and the addition of new flotation capacity. To minimise cross contamination a Jameson Cell was installed and dedicated to cleaning of slag concentrates, which had formerly been conducted by three flotation columns operating in series. The flotation columns were re-configured to operate in parallel and dedicated to upgrading chalcopyrite concentrate. In addition a Jameson Cell was installed to reject entrained copper from a prefloat concentrate consisting of talc and carbonaceous pyrite. This paper discusses the logic behind the cleaner circuit expansion, recent test work relating to the Jameson Cell and the installation and commissioning phases. Difficulties relating to the commissioning are reviewed and the solutions to problems are highlighted. The benefits the reconfigured circuit has provided to Mount Isa Mines are also discussed.

"AngloGold Ashanti Brasil, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, has recently commissioned a new autoclave for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold feeds at their Corrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Design of the new plant, including feed acidulation, pressure oxidation, oxidized solids washing and solution neutralization circuits, was based on the results of test work conducted by Sherritt at their pilot plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. This paper describes the results of the pilot plant study as well as highlights of the design exercise.INTRODUCTIONAngloGold Ashanti Brasil (AGA Brasil) has recently commissioned a refractory gold pressure oxidation plant at the site of the original São Bento operation in Brazil. The design of the São Bento pressure oxidation facility was based on Sherritt technology; Sherritt carried out the original process development test work in the mid-1980s, provided a process design package and detailed specifications for critical pressure oxidation equipment and participated in the training of operators and commissioning of the plant. The São Bento plant was operated between 1986 and 2007, when the original ore body was exhausted (Silva et al., 2004). AGA Brasil purchased the facility from Eldorado Gold in 2008, with the intent of refurbishing the plant to process refractory gold concentrates produced from the nearby Córrego do Sítio mining area.Sherritt International Corporation has a long history in the development and application of commercial pressure oxidation and pressure leaching processes. Sherritt’s development of technology for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates commenced in the 1980s in collaboration with Homestake for application at the McLaughlin project in California. This was followed by several commercial applications in Canada, Papua New Guinea and Brazil (Berezowsky et al., 1991). More than thirty pilot plant campaigns investigating the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores or concentrates have been conducted by Sherritt since the 1980s, and projects with Sherritt contributions to the process development studies and/or engineering design account for about half of the commercial plants that have operated to date with this type of process (Collins et al., 2011a; 2011b)."

"A model of the flotation process can be used effectively for design and control. For design purposes it can be used to predict the performance of a large plant from laboratory and pilot plant data. It can be used for control purposes to assess the utility of any proposed operating modification to an existing plant, and it can also be used to determine optimal control settings for best operating performance.A model has been developed that will allow for variations in feed properties and for variations in fineness of grind. The model can be used to assess the effects of reagent addition rate, aeration rate and pulp level on plant performance and these are the control variables that are used individually or together in all operating flotation plants. The model provides for a distribution in the values for flotation rate constants, particle size and mineral fraction, and, because of its complexity, requires a large computer when it is to be applied to a typical plant configuration. The computational method that is used to apply this model to such configurations is described in this paper, and particular attention is paid to the problem of allowing for feedback of tailings from cleaners and recleaners."

It has been demonstrated that microscopic techniques can be applied in a practical manner to the study of spodumene liberation in the processing of pegmatitic ores at the Kings Mountain spodumene plant, Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Spodumene and associated non-opaque gangue minerals are identified and quantified by microscopic point-counting of polished thin sections of heads, concentrates, middlings and tails fractions. Specially prepared polished thin sections? provide uniform thickness of particles for measurement of diagnostic optical properties and the alternate use of incident and transmitted light in distinguishing the various gangue and ore minerals. Spodumene is commonly associated and interlocked with quartz, albite, microcline and muscovite. Concentrate grade depends on the degree of spodumene liberation, which in turn depends on the crystal size and textural association of interlocked minerals. The liberation of spodumene can be measured as a function of screen size by means of microscopic point-count data. Microscopic data also provide useful metallurgical information about the nature of diluent minerals in spodumene concentrates, and the form of lithia losses in the tails. Lithium assays correlate closely with microscopic spodumene analyses in various flotation products from Foote Mineral's Kings Mountain plant, and confirm the applicability of quantitative optical microscopy to the study of liberation and recovery of spodumene from pegmatitic ores. A better understanding of recovery-grade relationships was developed as a result of quantitative microscopy studies.

Several laboratory flotation tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a sample of unweathered diorite from the B. F. Camden property, Amherst County, Va. Results showed that an ilmenite concentrate analyzing 45.5 percent Ti02 (titania), 0.07 percent P205 (phosphorus pentoxide), and 2.21 percent Si02 (silicon dioxide) could be produced from a feed containing 7.72 percent Ti02 and 3.94 percent P205. Ti02 recovery in the concentrate was 47.6 percent in a batch test. The weathered saprolite material overlying the diorite required scrubbing and desliming to remove argillaceous material and preliminary flotation of apatite followed by flotation of ilmenite. The resulting concentrate analyzed 47.3 percent Ti02, 0.19 percent P205, and 0.99 percent Si02 from a starting feed of 8.99 percent Ti02 and 3.37 percent P205; TiO2 recovery was 54.5 percent.

"Some of the tools developed for the processing of nickel laterite ore by resin-in-pulp (RIP) may be applicable to the remediation of metalliferous mine drainage (MMD). In both cases, recovery of metal value and production of a stable waste stream appropriate for long term storage is desired. MMD typically has the additional challenge of management of toxic low-value metals. Seen in this light, innovations in RIP reactor configuration, selective elution strategies and novel synthetic ion exchange resins become useful tools for taking on the MMD challenge in a way that maximizes both environmental and economic benefit. INTRODUCTIONAcid mine drainage (AMD) is a common problem in any country with significant past mining activity. When sulphide containing minerals, tailings or slag are exposed to water, oxygen and sulphur oxidizing bacteria, AMD will result. Abundant and reactive iron sulphide minerals leach first, providing acidity and the ferrous/ferric couple that can enhance the oxidation kinetics of other minerals. If this runoff contacts encounters acid consuming carbonates or silicates, the acidity may be neutralized, but certain heavy metals remain in solution and can continue to be an environmental hazard (Gray, 1997). For this reason, the remainder of this paper will refer to the broader term metalliferous mine drainage (MMD) rather than acid mine drainage. In either case, such drainage, containing high heavy metal concentrations and often significant acidity, is toxic to aquatic life and can lead to significant damage to ecosystems and to public watercourses. MMD is a problem most commonly associated with now defunct sulphide mineral mines, but similarly toxic streams can result from many types of waste, such as poorly stabilized leach tailings, slag heaps, and coal flotation tailings (Johnson and Hallberg, 2005; Lee et al., 2002; Sainz et al., 2002; Schüring et al., 1997). In any case, the management and remediation of MMD is an important ongoing problem for the resource industry, particularly for the many mines in Canada closed before the advent of more stringent environmental standards. MMD remediation represents a significant long term expense for the resource industry. Multi-disciplinary efforts to understand and mitigate this problem range from creation of artificial wetlands (Poulin and Lawrence, 1996; Sheoran and Sheoran, 2006) to sophisticated biochemical reactors and precipitation processes (Hatami, 2010). Certain remediation technologies such as ion exchange offer methods to make a saleable product by recovering valuable dissolved metals. This paper will show how these technologies can help defray the cost of remediation, and offer potential to turn a dangerous waste stream into a useful product."

Situations where suitable bulk fill material may not be available on the surface, and where the total cost of setting up a fill distribution system are prohibitive, could favour the mining of fill material underground adjacent to the stopes being mined. Considerations include environmental impact, scheduling, surface constraints and total costs. The examples quoted in this paper, and the case studies are based on the authors' personal observations and experience.

The history of the Bunker Hill mine dates back to August 26, 1885, when Noah S. Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill orebody on the hillside of Milo Gulch above the present town of Wardner, Idaho. A small concentrator was erected in 1886, and before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d'Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma smelter at Tacoma, Wash., to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917, a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected, and a modern electrolytic zinc reduction plant was built in 1927-1928 by the Sullivan Mining Co. which was 50 pct owned (and now totally owned) by the Bunker Hill Co.

The quality of the concentrator plant process water is crucial for high performing mineral flotation circuits. Significant metal recovery and concentrate grade losses have been noticed particularly in more closed water loops. The recovery and quality losses have started to emerge mainly with decreased freshwater usage and because of changes in tailings management towards tailings thickening, paste, or dry stacking. These changes result in shorter, closed water loops with a rapid build-up of harmful components with negative impact on the beneficiation process. Consequently, water quality has a direct link to decreased product value and sales returns. Complete cleaning or water blending might not be the right way to achieve high recovery and high-quality products. Instead, the key is to understand what kind of water qualities are needed for the flotation of specific minerals. In this study harmful substances in various plant water streams were removed and/or modified by pilot-scale dissolved air flotation. Batch-scale mineral flotation tests with the untreated and treated water were then performed by using fresh ore samples and the plant’s own laboratory flotation procedure. The results indicate that because of dissolved air flotation, the mineral flotation recoveries were enhanced by 1‒3.3%. The object of this paper is to give to mining companies and to all others who are interested some idea of the possibilities in the treatment, by differential flotation, of lead-zinc ores of the Coeur d'Alene region and other districts. The purpose of these investiga.. tions is not to evolve a differential flotation process that would replace present methods of gravity concentration but rather one that could be applied to the relatively fine material and slime produced in the mills and treated unsuc_pessfully by gravity methods or by flotation. It is expected, of course, that the products to be obtained by differential flotation would be of much better grade than those now produced by flotation in the Coeur d'Alene mills. In view of the fact that it has been difficult to obtain representative samples of flotation feed from the mills, owing to the necessity of shipping the material wet and free from oil or other foreign matter that might be deleterious to the differential separation of the sulphides, the writers have felt justified in running flotation tests with the mill feeds in order to ascertain whether a differential separation of the sulphides could be effected. However, two different lots of flotation feed were tested for differential flotation, and the results of tests of one of these are given in this report. It is hoped that it will be possible later to test out the flotation feed for differential flotation on a large scale in some of the mills. This paper covers part of the investigations carried on by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Idaho Bureau of Mines, the University of Idaho, and certain mining companies of the Coeur d'Alene region. Although the results of the tests included in this report are not to be considered final, they indicate possibilities and may suggest others leading to a solution of the problem of separating lead and zinc sulphides by differential flotation in the treatment of certain ores.

Lake Superior region. Industrial mineral production in Alberta, worth $468 million in 1997, comes from a dozen types of industrial minerals, mined by about 400 producers. Cement and lime from Paleozoic limestone formations exposed along the Rocky Mountains account for the greatest production value. Sand andgravel is the primary source ofmineral aggregate. Almost two-thirds of this aggregate is consumed in the Edmonton and Calgary regions. Sulphur produced at 48 sour gas processing plants and two oil sands plants was valued at $84.8 million in 1997 and accounted for 80% ofCanadian sulphur production. Four companies solution mine the Elk Point salt beds to produce chlor-alkali chemicals, industrial salt and sodium chlorate. Natural brine is also produced as a dust control product. Al $22 million, peat moss is a major industrial mineral product in Alberta. Other minerals with noteworthy production include shale, stone, silica and ammolite. The commodities with the greatest development potential are diamond, silica and oil sands tailings by-product minerals.

Telfer Gold Mine is a gold-copper mine in the eastern Pilbara of Western Australia, owned and operated by Newcrest Mining Limited. TelferÆs ores are processed by a dual train, 21 Mt/a, concentrator where gold is primarily recovered by gravity concentration and the flotation of a gold-bearing copper concentrate. A minor portion of TelferÆs gold is also recovered to a pyrite concentrate that undergoes treatment via carbon-in-leach (CIL) cyanidation. The gold recovery of the CIL circuit is below the industry standard and operates with a high reagent consumption rate.With a new fine-grinding facility, the Telfer process plant will have the ability to liberate copper and gold from the pyrite concentrate and recover these by flotation prior to the existing leaching circuit. This process will improve overall gold and copper extraction, while reducing reagent consumption in the CIL circuit.This article is an overview of the development of this methodology. Size-by-size analysis and mineralogical studies of monthly composites identified factors limiting the CIL gold recovery and the causes of high reagent consumption. Laboratory studies confirmed a relationship between the regrind product size and gold leach recovery. The addition of an intermediate flotation stage ensured that the regrind circuit will improve overall recovery while at the same time reducing operating costs. Without the addition of a flotation stage, the additional reagent consumption from regrinding alone would be prohibitive towards increasing recovery. Pilot scale studies confirmed the conditions required to selectively recover gold and copper from the pyrite concentrate as well as establishing the full scale regrinding energy requirements. Kalgoorlie Consolidation Gold Mines (KCGM) operates the Kalgoorlie Super Pit open cut, Mt Charlotte underground mine, Fimiston process plant and Gidji Roaster facility for joint venture partners Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Gold. In 2004, the Fimiston plant was upgraded by the addition of gravity concentration to the Fimiston and Mt Charlotte grinding circuits, including the installation of a central intensive cyanidation reactor to process the gravity concentrates. The gravity project was justified after detailed analysis demonstrating an expected increase in overall gold recovery of approximately one per cent, in addition to reduced elution costs and reduced gold inventory in flotation concentrate stockpiles. The gravity circuits were commissioned in August 2004, and have since consistently recovered 10 to 20 per cent of the gold present in the KCGM ore, delivering a reduction in coarse gold losses equivalent to 0.45 per cent additional metal recovery and contributing to improved metal accountability.CITATION:Giblett, A, Hillier, D, Parker, K and Ramsell, V, 2012.
