"It has been known for some time that sizes of aqueous particles may be affected by flow-induced relative humidity (RH) changes. The RH of air flowing through an impactor decreases as a result of pressure drop through the impactor and increases because of aerodynamic cooling within the high-speed jets, as illustrated in Figure 1. Because the sizes of aqueous particles depend on RH, the impaction stage on which such particles are collected may be different from the stage where they ought to be col¬lected, based on the particle size at the sampler inlet.Fuchs (1980) reviewed literature on water vapor condensation in impactors. The reviewed impactors operated at jet velocities of 100-250 m/s. Particle size increases ow¬ing to water vapor condensation were found in all cases. In one case (Khorguani et al., 1970), it was found that very small droplets (Dp <_ 0.02 um) containing sodium chloride and silver iodide were collected in an impactor with a cut point of 0.32 µm and a jet velocity of 100 m/s. Fuchs believed that such particles could not be captured in an impactor without having been enlarged by condensation. Winkler (1974) sampled at¬mospheric dust with a rectangular nozzle impactor that had a nozzle cross section of 0.3 x 15 mm, a cut size of 0.4 um, and an average jet velocity of 100 m/s. No adhesive was used on the impaction plate. The collection efficiency increased as air humidity was increased from 20% to 100%. The effect was especially noticeable in the increased collection efficiency for hygroscopic particles, and was attributed to condensation.Extensive theoretical and experimental research work on the distortion of the particle size distributions in impactors was done by Biswas and coworkers (1985, 1987). The impactors employed in the study were a low-pressure impactor with high jet velocity stages (Hering et al., 1978, 1979) and a conventional six-stage impactor, Sierra's model 226, operated in the incompressible regime. Ammonium sulfate aerosols were chosen for the study. In the low-pressure impactor, an orifice operating at a Mach number of 1 causes a sudden pressure drop, significantly reducing the RH in the next two stages (stages 5 and 6). This results in a 0.15-um diameter ammonium sulfate droplet shrinking to about 0.07 um at stage 5 when the inlet RH is 95%. In stage 7, the tempera¬ture drop is considerable because the jet speed is sonic. For an inlet RH of 95%, a 0.03 um droplet grows to about 0.06 um. However, the same size droplet at an inlet RH of 25% grows to only 0.04 um. For the Sierra model 226 cascade impactor that is operated with a Mach number of 0.27 at the last stage (stage VI), it was found that for an inlet RH of about 67%, particle growth would occur in stage VI. At 80% RH, both stages V and VI were affected. Biswas et al. (1987) stated that Mach number alone does not determine the size biasing; the type of aerosol, the inlet conditions, the temperature and pressure ratio, and the impactor geometry (throat length, jet-to-plate distance, etc.) must be considered for each stage in evaluating the distortion of the particle size distribution."

An upgrade to Vale?s existing Clarabelle dual-pinion, semiautogenous (SAG) mill was completed by the power and automation technology company, ABB. The mill is used to reduce the size of the ore at the company?s nickel and copper mines in the Sudbury area. The project was completed on time and on budget with an excellent safety record. Located in Ontario about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto, Vale?s Sudbury operations are primarily underground nickel sulfide mines, with integrated mining, milling, smelting and refining operations. One of the characteristics of Clarabelle Mill is to accept nickel-copper ore from various sources and companies and to produce a nickel-copper concentrate and copper concentrate for further processing. The size of the ore is further reduced in SAG mills, rod mills and ball mills, where all milling is done wet.

PART I.-GASES IN INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION THE part played by gases in industry can be considered from at least four distinct viewpoints, viz: (1) As air to support combustion and life and do various kinds of work (2) As fuel, or as essential to certain chemical processes (3) As sources of danger from explosion or fire ( 4) As hazards to man&apos;s health The present paper deals with gases only insofar as they are sources of danger, or are hazards to health. It may be noted, however, that, in point of tonnage, air is one of the most important materials handled in any industrial plant. In the operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, for example, 138,000 tons of air are handled daily, the only material exceeding this figure being water. The United States Bureau of Mines has listed no fewer than seventy-four gases and vapours that, under certain conditions, may be considered as ex-plosive or dangerous (poisonous). The Missouri-Oklahoma tripoli district was discovered and first mined in 1869 near Seneca, Missouri. Tripoli is a microcrystalline form of high-purity silica that is porous, light- weight, and friable and is derived from a parent siliceous sedimentary rock from which soluble minerals have been leached. Tripoli deposits, 2 to 20 feet thick, occur in cherty limestones of Mississippian age beneath 2 to 10 feet of overburden. They are mined in open pits up to 9 acres in size. The color of tripoli is white, but it also commonly is light pink or red where stained by red iron oxides and clays. Ground tripoli is used commercially as an abrasive or in buffing and polishing compounds and is prized for such physical characteristics as its abrasiveness, porosity, permeability, absorption, and specific gravity.

The economical processing of wet and sour natural gas presents a problem due to the seasonal demand for natural gas. The plants must be sized to handle the peak loads but may only operate at half capacity on the average, in which case the sales value of sulphur and hydro-carbon liquid by-products cannot support the operating and capital costs of the plant. This must result in an increased price for the gas. This problem was solved by Pacific Petroleums and Westcoast Transmission in the design of their pipeline and plant facilities now operating in the Peace River area, where there are both wet and dry gas fields. By .building a plant to process sufficient wet gas to pro-vide the base load requirement, and by drawing on the dry gas fields for peak loads, an optimum economic operation was ?possible. The sulphur, L.P.G., and gasoline produced not only are able to support the operating and capital costs of the pro-cessing plant, but were instrumental in the sharp drop in retail prices of these commodities in the area. The sour gas and condensate is gathered from the fields in the area and transmitted in a two-phase gathering system to the gas processing plant at Taylor, B.C. The condenrnte is knocked out in inlet scrubbers. Hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide are removed in an amine scrubbing unit. The hydrogen sulphide is stripped from the amine and is sent to the Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company&apos;s plant which produces sulphur by the partial oxidation of the hydrogen sulphide. The natural gas, now sweet, is processed in an absorption unit to recover additional liquids, before being de-hydrated to remove water. It is then sent to Westcoast&apos;s main c8mpression station. The condensate recovered in the inlet scrubbers and the liquid re-covered in the absorption unit are fractionated to remove fuel gas, used in the plant, and to produce pro-pane, butane, and naphtha. The pro-pane and butane are scrubbed with caustic soda to remove hydrogen sulphide. The naphtha is treated with hydrogen in a unifiner unit to re-move sulphur compounds completely, and is split into a light and heavy naphtha. The heavy naphtha is .catalytically reformed to produce a high-octane blending-component. These fractions are blended with components produced from crude oil at the Dawson Creek refinery to produce a high-quality balanced gasoline with special attention being paid to volatility for ease of starting, warm up, and engine cleanliness, and octane for power and ?performance.

The mineralogical, chemical, microtextural, and particle size character of electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts are being studied by reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis (SEM-EDS) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The dusts consist predominantly of metallic iron, iron oxide, and calcium-iron-manganese silicate phases, together with smaller amounts of iron-manganese-zinc-calcium, iron-calcium-zinc-manganese, and calcium-iron-manganese silicates. The samples vary in their zinc contents. Chlorine occurs in phases containing iron, lead, zinc, manganese, and calcium. The dust particles range greatly in size from 1 to more than 300 ~m, but most particles are about 1 to 6 ~m. Larger particles. about 20-50 um across. also are present. They are predominantly spherical in shape, but some are cenospheres, and others are more angular particles, some of which are broken spheres and cenospheres. Their internal microtextures exhibit evidence of liquid immiscibility, exsolution, skeletal crystal growth, and oxidation react i on rims. Because EAF dusts have been classified by EPA as hazardous wastes, there is heightened interest in the treatment of these dusts to render them non-hazardous. The mineralogy of products of pyrometallurgical treatment of EAF dusts by flash furnace and pyrohydrolysis are currently under study.

This led to a review of the rather bulky literature on the subject and the finding that plasticity still remains to be satisfactorily explained. Most of these investigations seem to have been carried on solely from the chemical viewpoint, the geologic aspects having been ignored. One of the major problems with deep Polish hard coal mines are deformations of close-to-wall galleries since they are necessary and must he kept open for emergency situations and are largely responsible for work disturbances. In order to ensure safe and effective working operations, it is necessary to often rebuild galleries which, apart from the inevitable stoppage of operations, is greatly disadvantageous for the operation of a mine. The largest problems with maintaining the galleries open occur in Lower Silesian Coal Field mines where sometimes it is necessary to reconstruct the galleries several times [(Fig. 1)]. In light of what has been said above, the aim of this article is to present the reader with methods and ways of determining deformations occurring in close-to-wall galleries. Squeezing or convergence of headings is only a portion of the entire process of ground movement caused by ground disturbance due to workings. The term "squeezing of headings" is to be understood as a shortening of the distance between a point set on the roof of a heading and the corresponding one on the floor. It is very important to know the rules governing the process of squeezing in a particular mining system since it affords possibilities to define changes of the process and its parameters at any moment for a given system. This is of utmost importance because convergence of a heading is one of the most significant manifestations of ground pressure which has already been proved by studies performed by Everling (1). On the basis of those studies it has been observed that there exists an almost linear relation between the rate of convergence and loading [(Fig. 2)]. This, in turn, means that the deformations of the already exploited portion of heading are proportional to the pressure changes.

The PT. Adaro Coal Mine targeted in this research is located in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The coal production of this mine is increasing year, with about 35 M tons of coal produced in 2006. This mine faces many ground control problems, especially instability of the footwall. Large-scale landslides occur often in the footwall; this may be because of weak rock and the effect of footwall rock weathering. Hence, prompt measures must be developed and followed in order to preserve the stability of the footwall and make this mine safe. Additionally, the final pit design is now being reconsidered because of the increasing demand for and high price of coal. With these issues in mind, this paper describes a solution for improving the stability of the footwall and discusses the final pit design based on the results of an on-site investigation and numerical analysis.

This paper is a revision of a former paper published in mimeograph form by both the Canadian and American coal classification committees, and is now presented for the purpose of acquainting those interested with the present status of coal classification in Canada. The classification employed for "Customs purposes" is detailed, and the classification schemes from which the customs classification was derived are reviewed and discussed. The activities of the Canadian coal classification committee, namely, the Associate Committee of Coal Classification and Analysis of the National Research Council, is also reviewed. Reserves, Production and Uses of Canadian Coals The total coal resources of North America are estimated to be 69 per cent. of those of the world, and of this portion, the distribution is 52 per cent. for the United States and 17 per cent. for Canada. Accordingly, Canadian coal resources amount to approximately one-third of those of the United States, and one-sixth of those of the world. As for the geographical distribution, the bulk of the known coal deposits are in the extreme eastern and western portions of the country. Employing the usual, more or less loosely defined, designations for the different classes and subclasses of coal, the distribution of the Canadian coal resources, according to provinces, is as follows: Maritime Provinces: Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Bituminous and semibitu- minous coals. Ontario (northern part).............................Lignite. Saskatchewan, (and Manitoba)....................... Lignite. Alberta and British Columbia........................ Following several roof falls in the E3 longwall development of a Consol Pennsylvania Coal Company underground coal mine, an underground roof geology reconnaissance program consisting of twenty-nine 20-foot deep roof holes had identified the presence of thick sandstone layers with abundant shale and micaceous streaks. The base of the sandstone was 4 to 8 feet above the roof line within the fall areas. The presence of micaceous streaks created extremely pronounced planes of weakness in the sandstone. A structural irregularity, which extends into the E4 and E5 developments, exists between crosscuts I 1 and 30,where all roof falls occurred. Immediately to the east of this structural irregularity lies a huge syncline. The presence of thick sandstone units within the typically all shale environment and within such a structural irregularity helps to maximize stress concentration and creates closely spaced joints in the sandstone, which explains why many cracks are present in the macroscopically massive sandstone upon development. The approaching E2 longwall gob to the south and on the down-dip side, on the other hand, provided horizontal stress relief in the sandstone, which helps to explain the many roof falls in the E3 development that occurred during or immediately after the formation of the E2 gob. Finite element modeling confirmed the presence of such horizontal stress relief. Since the E3 longwall was a right-handed face, stress concentration was expected at the longwall headgate T -junctions, and further delamination of the sandstone was expected upon arrival of the E3 longwall face. Based on the results of the roof geology reconnaissance program and a roof stability analysis that took into account up to eleven parameters, supplemental headgate and track roof support consisting of 16-foot and 20-foot long cable bolts was successfully implemented within the zone of thick sandstone with micaceous streaks and structural irregularity and at other potential roof instability areas along the E3 development. The cable bolts were designed to be anchored at least 4 feet above the sandstone unit into the mostly competent sandy shale layers. No headgate roof control problem was reported within the sandstone and structural irregularity zone during E3 and the subsequent E4 longwall extractions.

"Increasing demand for Solar Grade Silicon (SoG-Si) due to rising interest in renewable energy has lead to increased SoG-Si Top – cut scraps generated from the multi-crystalline silicon making process. Due to the high cost of SoG-Si and the potential to use the top-cut scraps as feedstock material, there has been increased effort to develop cost effective and efficient technologies. As a result, several methods to recycle the top-cut scraps are currently been applied, and researched. These include settling under gravitation field, which is a slow process to be industrially applicable. Natural settling of inclusions by gravitational force is a slow process and not attractive to the industry. Recent experiments on Top-cut SoG-Si scrap under high frequency, high voltage, electromagnetic field showed that SiC inclusions settled within a short time to the bottom of the crucible and the characteristic rod-like morphologies of Si3N4 inclusions in SoG-Si were not detected. This study investigates the enhanced settling of SiC inclusions and the behavior of Si3N4 particles under the influence of high frequency, high voltage, electromagnetic field in Top-cut SoG-Si.IntroductionThe photovoltaic industry depends on silicon based PV materials either as single-crystalline silicon, or multi-crystalline Si (MC-Si), or amorphous Si [1] for over 90 % of its market share. [2] MC-Si produced by directional solidification of solar grade silicon melt dominates the silicon PV market. During the directional solidification process, SiC and Si3N4 particles within the melt are pushed by the solidification front to the top of the ingot which is the last to solidify. Therefore the top of the ingot is cut generating what is known as top-cut solar silicon scraps. The Si3N4 particles are mainly from the coating material at the inside surface of the silica crucible and from air absorption during the solidification process. The SiC particles mainly stem from the carbon reduction process of the primary production of silicon [3]. Due to the growth of the PV industry as a result of global demand for clean, reliable, and affordable energy [4], there is the need to develop new methods to compliment exiting ones to recycle SoG-Si waste (e.g. top-cut) for sustainability."

Beginning in late 1985 and continuing through 1987, Bureau of Mines personnel investigated longwall chain pillar and entry design in two-and three-entry gate-road systems at a deep underground coal mine located in central Utah. To evaluate their respective stability characteristics, four chain pillars and two longwall panels within the two separate entry systems were instrumented with Bureau of Mines hydraulic borehole pressure cells to continuously monitor vertical and horizontal pillar and panel stresses through adjacent panel retreat. In addition, supplemental entry closure information was obtained from sites located in the vicinity of the instrumented pillars. The findings presented in this report demonstrate the practicality of evaluating mine pillar stability using in situ methods and support three significant conclusions regarding ground control aspects of the investigated two-entry system: (1) Total areal entry loading was considerably less for the two-entry system, as opposed to the three-entry system, (2) a smaller percentage of opened ground in the two-entry system contributed to a marked reduction in roof falls, and (3) lower areal loading in the two-entry system suggests improved ground conditions when mining the underlying seam.

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940&apos;s revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

Linking Ashford International Station to the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link required over 5000 rotary bored and CFA (continuous flight auger) piles to form tunnel walls and viaduct foundations and to support overbridges and trackside barriers.. Much of the work was carried out close to the existing railway infrastructure. Plunged columns were used to maintain traffic flows over the tunnel site during construction. The results of an extensive programme of vertical and lateral load tests on bored and CFA piles in heavily overconsolidated Weald Clay are compared to illustrate the relative importance of stress relief and of prolonged exposure to bentonite. The completion on schedule of this major piling and ground engineering contract (value £30 million) demonstrates that collaborative working in partnership produced cost effective solutions to a series of challenging technical and logistical problems.
