"Working with solar-grade silicon for solar cells application usually meets some difficulties in comparison to polysilicon produced by Siemens method: higher impurities content leads to lower yield, worse electro-physical parameters and poor performance in solar cells application. However some adjustments in ingot production can show significant improvements in quality of final product: crystalline wafers and cells.Recent investigations have shown that solar-grade silicon is suitable for high effective production process such as mono-like multicrystalline wafer production. Production-scale lots made at Pillar show promising results for solar-grade silicon application: high-quality wafers with significantly big crystalline grains of <100> orientation.IntroductionThe standard technology of producing multicrystalline silicon ingots by directional solidification method in quartz crucibles has a number of disadvantages resulting in limited efficiency of solar cells made of multicrystalline material: crystallites of multicrystalline ingot are relatively small (down to 5 mm size), grain borders of crystallites contain parasitic impurities such as metals, silicon nitride etc., crystallographic orientation of crystallites is random. The listed deficiencies are an integral characteristic of the technology which affects the efficiency of solar cells, such as presence of solar cells with low efficiency even at a high level of average efficiency, problems with shunted cells, silicon nitride inclusions, which adversely affect cell efficiency and are centres for silicon carbide formation, impossibility of application of high effective alkaline texturing etc. Also with regard to the targets set by photovoltaic to reduce the cost per Wp in the nearest future, standard technology of multicrystalline silicon ingots production by directional solidification faces certain challenges some of which are hard to overcome due to rather low efficiency of solar cells made of multicrystalline wafers. Therefore alternative methods of multicrystalline silicon production for photovoltaic application having a number of advantages in comparison to traditional technology are developing rapidly."

Fine colloidal gold near Carlin, Nevada is disseminated in leached carbonate strata of the Roberts Mountains Formation in the Lynn "window" of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault. The ore body is generally stratiform and is more or less conformable to altered beds near the top of the formation, underlying Devonian limestones. Two sequences of mineralization are recognized: ( 1) an earlier base metal-barite assemblage related to early Cretaceous intrusives (121 ± 5 m.y.), and (2) a later low temperature Au-As-Hg-Sb assemblage of near surface emplacement. The earlier sequence consisting of sparse galena and sphalerite in barite with anomalous amounts of zinc, lead, nickel and copper, associated with dikes of dacitic composition, is of little economic importance. The later sequence of gold, realgar, cinnabar, and stibnite associated with extensive silicification and argillic alteration of limestone beds, has resulted in important deposits of gold. Argillic alteration of hydrothermally leached carbonate strata has provided the environment in which the most prominent gold deposition took place. Carbonate minerals in the limestone host rock have been replaced by microcrystalline quartz and chalcedony to form stratiform silica masses and recrystallized lenses of euhedral quartz. Zones of porous silicification are light gray to white, elliptical in shape, and more or less follow bedding. Silicification is bordered by argillic alteration and pyritization. Deposition of gold usually lies in a zonal pattern that encircles chimney areas of silicification.

This article, though not common feature material, should be of reader interest. Goth made this presentation as the keynote address at the 19th Annual Intermountain Minerals Conference in Vail, CO, in August. Introduction Working backward, what is an LDC? LDC stands for Less Developed Country. LDCs play a dynamic role in world supply and demand of basic materials. They occupy an equally important position in international marketing and finance. I will explain later some of my concerns with LDCs. First, I want to address an issue I think is of equal or even greater concern. Mining and High Technology Unfortunately, many people believe that America must make a decision now between being a smokestack-based economy or a high-technology-based economy. Some would have you believe that smokestack America is dead. Our only option is to turn to high technology, in a manner similar to countries such as Japan. Presumably, when we talk about high-technology industries we envision organizations that came into being within the last decade or so and incorporate microelectronics, biotechnology, and interconnected computers. The entire workforce is clad in lab coats and there are few employees in proportion to the work performed. High-technology industry is not labor-intensive work thanks to the efficient robots used. On the opposite side are smoke-stack industries, that we presume include the older, basic industries such as mining, agriculture, iron and steel manufacturing, ship-building, auto manufacturing, and nearly all forms of construction. These industries are judged to be labor intensive, requiring unsophisticated and untrained employees who succeed by the sweat of their brows rather than by advanced degrees in mathematics and physics. If these are indeed the presumptions about high technology versus smokestack industries, then I submit that those presumptions are a disaster. They are wrong and far from the truth. Smokestack industries, such as mining and the others mentioned, are indeed much older than some of the recently founded high-tech industries. But this does not mean that those smokestack industries are low-technology industries. On the contrary, American agricul¬ture is a very high-technology industry whose crop yields are the envy of the entire world. Mining uses virtually all of the advances available through modern technology. Far too many opinion leaders still envision mining as Humphrey Bogart and John Huston in the movie Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Yet there are many who hold the opinion that our basic industries are dead and that this country&apos;s future depends on specialized high-technology industries and services. That is tantamount to announcing we will continue to build space shuttle vehicles, but we no longer need launching pads and landing fields. The point is, we should not be wasting our time talking about "new" industries and "old" industries. We should devote our time and effort to industries that are effective and efficient in meeting our needs, in contrast to industries that are not effective and efficient in meeting our needs. Less Developed Countries That leads me to some of the problems I perceive with policies regarding the previously mentioned LDCs - Less Developed Countries. Far too many people do not realize that many of the smokestack industries being lauded in Less Developed Countries are being operated at a loss and to the detriment of worldwide industry. In many areas of the United States much of the most readily minable coal is nearing depletion, while at the same time, increased national attention is being given to coal as a major alternate energy source. If some of the thinner, more erratic, deeper and lower quality coals, which comprise the great bulk of U.S. resources, are to be mined efficiently and economically, greater attention must be devoted to careful planning of mines and to preparation facilities. One of the cornerstones to careful and successful mine planning is precise knowledge of coal thickness and areal distribution, roof and floor quality, and seam quality. Data on which this knowledge is based are obtained from various borehole techniques and, in some cases, seismic methods. Despite the many technical innovations that have been made in acquiring subsurface data, little attention has been given to the problem of systematic storage and retrieval procedures of the data and assembling them in a form that can be used for various computer mapping programs now available. (See Bilter and Martin, 1977; Bryant and Zobrist, 1977 and Farrell and Wherry, 1978). The purpose of this paper is to describe a series of user oriented programs developed over the past five years which are specifically designed for precise logging of rock core, accurate storage and retrieval of this data, correlation of seams between logs, tagging seams, computer assisted data posting of maps and preparing maps and profile sections for report illustrations. The entire system stresses increased precision and speed for a series of operations which are now largely manual, time consuming and prone to error.

Having estimated fleet size and productivity, the next and final step in this analysis is to introduce cost. Total cost of the system is a combination of capital, operating, and any other external costs that may be incurred. The last item, external costs, can be particularly important when comparing one size or type of truck fleet with another. Once costs are calculated, it is possible to compare systems on a total cost, cost per hour, cost per ton, or any other basis that is required. Methods used vary from simple owning and operating costs to sophisticated discounted cash flow analyses involving optional fleet replacements over the project life.

Nepheline syenite is a light-colored feldspathic rock that is used primarily as an addition to the glass batch. It is also used in ceramics and as an industrial filler. Composed essentially of the soda and potash feldspars and nepheline, nepheline syenite contributes needed alkalis and alumina to the glass composition. And because it contains a higher proportion of these oxides per unit weight, it is a formidable competitor for feldspar in northeastern North America and parts of western Europe. Nepheline-bearing rocks are not uncommon on a world scale, but few are able to be beneficiated to a composition sufficiently low in iron to be used in the making of glass. Nepheline can only form in an environment deficient in silica. Hence free silica, as quartz, is always absent in the primary mineral assemblage. Biotite, hornblende and magnetite are usually present as minor accessory minerals, and zircon, garnet, muscovite, and apatite may be present as trace minerals. Nepheline syenite is produced for glass, ceramics, and filler markets by Unimin Canada Limited at Blue Mountain, in south- eastern Ontario. Unimin acquired the former Indusmin and IMC properties from Falconbridge Ltd. in 1990. Elkem Nefelin AIS commenced production of similar products from Stjernoy Island in northern Norway in 1961. Unimin acquired this company in 1992. Nepheline has also been a byproduct of apatite mining on the Kola Peninsula for many years, and in 1951 the production of alumina from nepheline was commenced in a plant near St. Petersburg (Leningrad). There are now four plants in the Russian Republic, two smaller ones based on nepheline tailings from apatite mining and two larger and more recent plants in central Siberia using other nepheline resources. All four of these plants are integrated complexes that produce alumina for the subsequent production of aluminum metal, sodium and potassium carbonates, and portland cement. Roofing granules are produced by the 3M Company from a nepheline rock in Arkansas. In 1980 and 1989, trial shipments of nepheline syenite were recorded from new sources in Brazil and western Turkey respectively. Recent interest is also recorded for deposits in China, Saudi Arabia, and British Columbia.

The principal causes of unstable boreholes* have been known for many years. For example, in a paper published in 1938, Halbouty and Kaldenbachl listed nearly all the classes of troublesome shales that we know today. Much progress has been made since then, but we still have difficulty in identifying the cause of hole problems and consequently in selecting the right technique for combatting them. This subject was discussed at length by Kelly2 in a recent paper and much valuable information was provided. In the Shell Laboratory it was felt that there was a need for a better understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying the various forms of hole instability, and accordingly, a study was undertaken. This entailed reviewing the physics and chemistry of shales, developing tests for characterizing shales, and constructing a model to study borehole stability. Full simulation of underground conditions was not attempted; for example, we used reconstituted shale specimens, and often simple solutions or suspensions rather than practical drilling muds. Such procedures are necessary in order to establish mechanisms, but caution must be exercised in applying the results to the more complex conditions in the field. Part I — Compaction Swelling and Dispersion of Shales Compaction of Sediments Shales are formed by the compaction of sediments. Water is expressed as sediments are buried by subsequent layers, and the degree of compaction is proportional to the depth of burial, provided the water is able to escape easily to permeable formations. The younger sediments, when recovered at the surface, soften and disperse when mixed with water; the older shales have undergone diagenesis (alteration of the clay minerals, secondary cementation, etc.), and remain hard and unaffected by water. In this paper we shall apply the term "shale", as the drilling engineer does, to everything from clays, which are highly reactive to water, to completely lithified materials such as claystones and slates, which are completely inert. However, because these materials behave quite differently when encountered in the drilling well, it is desirable to develop a simple means of characterizing them. The feature that distinguishes the various shales is their dispersibility in water —soft clays disperse readily, harder shales disperse slowly when agitated, the lithified materials will not disperse at all unless milled. In the dispersibility test used in our study, a weighed amount of dry shale particles in the 12-to-100-mesh-size range was placed in a tube filled with distilled water and allowed to soak for 16 hours. The application of the process to the direct reduction of iron ores is briefly discussed including its commercial application at Rockwood, Tennessee.

With the sinking of the new No. 3 Shaft and the increasing depth and northward movement of the mining operations, improved ventilation of the mine workings became necessary and it was decided to sink a new upcast ventilation shaft midway between No. 2 Shaft and No. 3 Shaft.The shaft is finished to 16 ft. internal diameter and connects with the mine workings at the 2,600-ft. level. It is lined with unreinforced Concrete approximately 12 in. thick. The shaft sinking routine was drilling, blasting and mucking by hand using a 27-cub. ft. capacity bucket. The concrete lining was poured in conjunction with the sinking and was normally finished within 30 to 50 ft. of the shaft bottom.

Resource Enterprises, Inc. (REI) is exploiting the coalbed gas resource by working in unison with active underground mining operations. At REI?s pilot project at the Soldier Canyon Mine, Carbon County, Utah, REI has drilled nearly 15,250 m of horizontal in- seam and slant boreholes during the initial two years of drilling activity. Produced gas has been sold to a natural gas transmission company on a continuous basis since mid 1983.

"Roof falls in longwall headgate can occur when weak roof and high horizontal stress are present. To prevent roof falls in the headgate under high horizontal stress, it is important to understand the ground response to high horizontal stress in the longwall headgate and the requirements for supplemental roof support. In this study, a longwall headgate under high horizontal stress was instrumented to monitor stress change in the pillars, deformations in the roof, and load in the cable bolts. The conditions in the headgate were monitored for about six months as the longwall face passed by the instrumented site. The roof behavior in the headgate near the face was carefully observed during longwall retreat. Numerical modeling was performed to correlate the modeling results with underground observation and instrumentation data and to quantify the effect of high horizontal stress on roof stability in the longwall headgate. This paper discusses roof support requirements in the longwall headgate under high horizontal stress in regard to the pattern of supplemental cable bolts and the critical locations where additional supplemental support is necessary.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining is the primary underground coal mining method in the United States and currently accounts for more than 60% of the underground coal production. The longwall headgate, as a passageway for the longwall crew, intake air, material supplies, and coal belt transportation, is critical for both safety and continuous production of the longwall panel. A roof fall in the longwall headgate would not only result in substantial interruption of production but could potentially cause injuries or fatalities. Rehabilitation of failed roof in the headgate would also expose miners to the risk of injuries. Roof falls in the headgate, though infrequent, mostly occur in the belt entry near the face. Considerable research has been conducted to determine the effects of various factors on headgate roof stability, as well as effective measures to support the roof in longwall mines in the Pittsburgh seam (Mark, Mucho, and Dolinar, 1998; Chen et al., 1998; Su and Hasenfus, 1995; Su, Thomas, and Hasenfus, 1999; Su, Morris, and McCaffrey, 2002; Su, Draskovich, and Thomas, 2003; Hasenfus and Su, 2006; Van Dyke et al., 2015). Previous studies have demonstrated that high horizontal stress and transitional roof geology are primary factors that cause headgate roof failure. These studies also showed that panel orientation, retreat direction, pillar sizes, and roof support played an important role in the stability of a headgate.In underground coal mines located in the eastern United States, the magnitude of the maximum horizontal stress is typically three times greater than the vertical stress, and about 40% greater than the minimum horizontal stress. Mark, Mucho, and Dolinar (1998) studied seven cases of headgate failures caused by high horizontal stress in different coal seams in the United States and stated that roof stability is affected, to a large extent, by rock type, entry orientation, and longwall orientation. The effects of horizontal stress can be summarized in these statements: (1) A laminated roof is very vulnerable to high horizontal stress. (2) Entries that are aligned with the maximum horizontal stress will suffer less damage on development than those perpendicular to it. (3) Horizontal stress concentration and relief depends on panel orientation, the direction of retreat, and the sequence of longwall panel extraction."

"The Williams Mine is Canada&apos;s largest gold producer, with annual production of some 500 000 ounces of gold from two million tonnes of ore. Highly mechanized and automated underground mining practices are utilized at the property in order to help achieve high levels of productivity and the most cost-effective mining possible.Planning and design parameters for the underground ore handling system at the Williams Mine are described in this paper. Particular reference is made to the considerations that were built into the system to provide maximum operating flexibility through the use of multiple orepass systems, portable low profile jaw crushers, underground conveyors and automated hoisting equipment.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is situated in the Hernlo area of northwestern Ontario, approximately 40 Ian east of the town of Marathon (Fig. I). It is operated by the Williams Operating Corporation, which is owned equally by Teck Corporation and Corona Corporation, and is one of three adjacent properties forming the HernIo gold camp.The mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a nominal production rate of 3000 tpcd. Through an ongoing capital development program, winch was completed in late 1989, the production rate at the property was increased to its current level of 6000 tpcd. This paper describes the mine planning process and the evolution of current mining strategies with particular reference to the underground ore handling system .HistoryGold mineralization was discovered in 1944 in the Hemlo area of Northern Ontario, near the north shore of Lake Superior. A year later, 11 claims were staked over the showing and subsequently patented by the late Dr. Jack Kerr Williams.Over the next 35 years, other claims were subsequently staked, explored and abandoned in the immediate area of the 11 patented claims . In 1980 a predecessor of the Corona Corporation acquired claims adjoining the Williams property to the east. Drilling on this claim group started early in 1981 and intersected the Hemlo orebody in May of that year. In December 1981, Corona Corporation entered into an option agreement with Teck Corporation to explore and develop the property.A drilling program by LAC Minerals on the II patented claims discovered the Williams orebody in March 1982. The mine started production in 1985, pouring its first official bar of gold on December 6 of that year. Corona Corporation was awarded ownership of the Williams Mine conclusively by a decision of the Supreme Court of Canada on August 11, 1989. The court&apos;s ruling ended a legal dispute with LAC Minerals over the property initiated eight years earlier."

Over a four year period from 1984 to 1987, a broad range of ground conditions were experienced in recovering old workings at the Walhalla mine in central-eastern Victoria. Access to the ore zone was gained via old workings and new development. The work included: Recovery of vertical and inclined shafts. Recovery of collapsed winzes. Recovery of level drives and crosscuts. Spiling through broken ground and old mullock. Pre-grouting of caved zones. New development using small-scale rail equipment and "bobcat" Loaders.

"Abstract The deformation behaviour of a foundation on deep mixed columns in a natural soft soil is a three-dimensional problem, which has to be considered adequately in numerical modelling. However, simplifications are often made due to the computational costs of fully coupled 3D analyses by either modifying geometry of the problem or material parameters in 2D for plain strain analyses or by modelling the problem as 2D axisymmetric case. The volume averaging technique (VAT) is an enhanced 2D FE technique that enables mapping the 3D problem in two-dimensions, yet modelling the two constituents (column and soft soil) with appropriate different constitutive models within a homogenized material. The performance of the volume averaging technique is demonstrated by considering unit cell simulations of floating and end bearing columns in soft soil. The results with VAT are compared and validated against conventional 2D axisymmetric and fully coupled 3D finite element analyses.IntroductionThe properties of very soft clays, silts and organic soils can be improved by stabilizing agents, such as lime and/or cement that are mixed into the soil in situ by using auger-type mixing tools in situ. Deep mixed columns are extensively used to reduce deformations and to improve the overall stability of embankments and foundations on soft soils. Whilst the most typical applications are embankments, increasingly the method is used under foundations. The first category of applications is very common in Scandinavian countries, whilst the latter application has been pioneered in Poland, as an environmentally friendly (low CO2) and cost effective alternative for piling. Due to economic and environmental reasons there is an increasing interest in the technique elsewhere in Europe. With deep mixing, the strength and deformation properties of the soft soil can be improved, and the risk of unwanted deformations is substantially reduced.Numerical methods, such as finite element (FE) analysis, can be used as an alternative to conventional design methods. They are particularly suitable when considering serviceability limit state, i.e. deformation analyses under working loads. FE analyses allow using advanced constitutive models that take account of the complex stress-strain behaviour of natural soil and stabilized columns, respectively. The problems that involve a grid of circular columns under an embankment or a strip footing are fully three-dimensional problems. As 3D analyses are very laborious and expensive, an enhanced 2D technique using the so-called volume averaging technique (VAT) is utilised. The basic idea is to describe the column-improved ground as a homogenized composite material, and using clever mathematics to map the true 3D problem into 2D. Once the constitutive relations of both composites are defined, the response of the column-improved ground can be simulated in 2D subject to arbitrary loading and boundary conditions."

HoistEM is a helicopter-towed time domain electromagnetic system. This paper presents details of the towed array structure (the Hoist) as well as a description of the instrumentation. A comparison between HoistEM and ground TDEM (from which HoistEM was derived) is given. Over 50 000 line kilometres of HoistEM have been completed to date and datasets for structural mapping, nickel, base metals, manganese, ground water and bathymetry are presented and discussed.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala que la energía solar se convierte en una herramienta que ayuda a lixiviar minerales con poca pirita y obtener una temperatura de proceso que magnifica la recuperación del cobre en especial de la calcopirita, etc. Asimismo, la influencia cuantitativa de la temperatura en la recuperación de los sulfuros primarios, transicionales y secundarios de cobre, la velocidad de calentamiento de la pila, las temperaturas de proceso que puede alcanzarse, las pérdidas de calor en el periodo no soleado del día, el balance térmico de la pila y otros indicadores económicos de viabilidad, etc. son presentados como resultados de pruebas diversas a nivel de laboratorio e industrial.

It is truly remarkable how the image of longwall as a method of mining has changed. Between 1920 and 19609 viewed on a world wide basis, longwall was regarded as a&apos; system for difficult and deep conditions and associated with intensive labour extraction. Today the world looks on longwall in the hope that it can produce the next really big break through in productivity, Three correlated machinery developments have made this possible, but it is not only the machinery developments, interesting though these be in themselves, but together with developments in control systems of these machines that longwall now looks so much more attractive, The machinery concerned is, of courses:- 1. The Anderton Shearer Loader - A miner that takes a narrow strip off the, face at rates acceptable to modern mining engineers. 2. An Armoured Flexible, Conveyor which can be kept in close contact with the face and still convey coal as it is snaked over to the faces 3. Powered support systems which can be mechanised and controlled with reliability at any distance from the individual support itself.

For bituminous and lignite coals the economic picture continued to improve as it has each year since the low of 1961, with production at 480 mil- lion tons in 1964 compared with 1963&apos;s 459 million tons. The anthracite industry produced 16.3 million tons in 1964 and 18.3 million tons in 1963. The industry is looking toward a further expansion; among the new developments will be a mining wheel producing 3 million tons of lignite per year in South Dakota. It is expected that electric power generation will continue to provide the market for most of the increase in consumption, with exports second in importance in the expansion. Improvements in methods of mining and transporting coal underground and in strip mines, and the cooperation of carriers in finding ways to reduce transportation costs to distant markets, have made possible these expansions. Research continues to reduce costs of mining, transportation, steam generation of electric power and production of steam for space heating and manufacturing processes, to retain some markets and expand others. Other research seeks to expand markets by developing fuel from coal which will be more attractive than competing fuels, by reducing sulfur and other sources of air pollution. Public relations efforts of the industry are bearing fruit in a greater acceptance of coal as a modern fuel.
