Four 22%Cr series duplex stainless steels alloys containing varying nickel contents of approximately 5, 7, 9 and 13% were melted in a vacuum induction furnace, hot rolled, solution annealed and water quenched. Their corrosion behaviour was investigated in sulphuric acid and sodium chloride solutions using a potentiodynamic polarization technique. Increasing nickel contents have appreciable influence on their corrosion behaviour. Polarization curves show similarities in the uniform corrosion behaviour of the alloys in the solutions and a significant difference in their pitting behaviour in chloride environments. Alloy 2209 generally exhibited highest resistance to uniform corrosion while 2213 displayed distinct and best pitting corrosion resistance. Their corrosion behaviour were attributed to the influence of nickel on phase modification, microstructural refinement, and the probably types of films formed in different environments. "Copper sulfide concentrates often contain impurities such as lead and iron. The phase stabilities of the sulfide impurity systems in metallurgical process conditions are in many cases unsatisfactorily known. Thermodynamic information of a system gives better understanding of its behavior of metal making processes, but also has effects on the economic and environmental factors of the production process. In this study, isothermal equilibrium and quenching experiments of the stable phases of the system Cu2S-FeS-PbS at 700 and 900 °C were carried out and based on the experimental results, Gibbs triangle of equilibrium phases of the system was outlined.IntroductionThe knowledge of stabilities of phases and the thermodynamic properties of many sulfide systems in the temperature range of 500-1200 °C are quite limited. Especially, the knowledge of liquidus surfaces of multicomponent sulfide systems is essential for making many metallurgical processes more environmental friendly and allowing the utilization of complex concentrates. In this work, the aim was to investigate the phase stabilities of the quasiternary system CU2SFeS- PbS using evacuated silica ampoules. Of greatest interest were the properties of the liquidus surface in the system, in order to be able to predict better the formation of a liquid phase in metallurgical processes."

A flowsheet has been developed to treat the flotation tailings from a copper mine in Mexico to recover gold and silver by cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The plant will treat ~15,000 t/day of a 60:40 blend of current flotation tailings and the mine’s historic tailings. The tailings also contain a significant amount of cyanide-soluble copper, and the economic viability of the project is strengthened by recovering most of the copper and cyanide associated with this process. The solution and solid phases in the CIP tailings will be separated in a counter current decantation (CCD) circuit and the CCD solution overflow will be treated by a SART Process. Copper precipitates as a salable copper sulphide product in the SART Process and the cyanide that is associated with the copper complex is regenerated as free cyanide. After SART, a portion of the SART product solution will be recycled to leach to reuse the free cyanide, while the remaining solution will be used as wash water in the CCD circuit. Incorporation of the SART Process in the flowsheet allows the CIP circuit to be operated aggressively as a gold plant, which means most of the silver in solution passes through CIP to SART. Silver co-precipitates with copper in SART and is recovered very efficiently with the copper sulphide by-product. Incorporation of SART also allows the leach and CIP circuits to be operated with relatively high levels of free cyanide, which enhances silver leach kinetics and helps keep copper from loading onto the carbon in CIP. The flowsheet was developed in the laboratory and successfully demonstrated in a fully-integrated pilot plant in 2018.

Lacy copper has been an on-going concern at Atlantic Copper for at least 10 years and was first reported to Glencore Technology in mid-2010. Over the past 12 years, many of the plates were replaced due to age and general deterioration however; plate passivation and lacy copper issues have persisted. After analyzing all the possible causes of this phenomena, it was found that the problem is caused by a degradation of stainless steel as a consequence of the deposition of Sb oxides. These deposits act as passivating agents of stainless steel, which reduces the density of copper nuclei, causing defective copper deposit, with low thickness and ductility. After doing several tests for reducing/removing the phenomena, the over-riding factor was found to be the anode-cathode overlap. An adequate overlap eliminates the problem of "lacy copper". This was verified during an eight month trial with anodes extended 2.5cm in length. Longer anode not only avoids the appearance of lacy copper, but also recovers cathodes that already have lacy copper. On the other hand polishing of plates only gives rise to a temporary solution that requires on-going polishing, to avoid the re-appearance of lacy copper. INTRODUCTION The electrolytic copper refinery of Atlantic Copper in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with an initial capacity of 40,000 t of cathodes per year. In 1975 the copper refinery was expanded to 108,000 t/year. From 1994 to 1996, a new expansion together with the implementation of ISA permanent cathode technology led to a capacity of 215,000 t/y. Since 1995, a progressive increase in the current density up to 350 A/m2 has been accomplished, which together with an increase in the number of cells from 1,120 to 1,204, has led to the present cathode production capacity of 290,000 t/y A lack of copper deposition in the lower part of the steel permanent cathodes was first reported in 2010. This phenomenon is known as “Lacy copper” because of the appearance of the copper deposit as it can be seen in Figure 1. The occurrence of this phenomena was relatively low and was assumed to be originated by an excessive anode scrapping. Nevertheless, in December 2015 Lacy Copper was observed in a significant amount of copper cathodes giving rise to the following issues: Increased tramp copper – housekeeping and maintenance problems Poor appearance of cathode deposit and untidy looking bundles

"INTRODUCTION This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained from limited diamond drilling at the lead-zinc deposits cf the Belle Eldridge Gold Mines, Inc., in Lawrence County, S. Dak. during the summer and fall of 1943. The work was undertaken in an effort to increase reserves and step-up production of zinc and lead so vitally important to the war program.The geology, topography and existing mine workings were mapped and studied. Subsequently, six vertical core-drill holes were put down from surface sites.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. THE viscosity of the oil in the reservoir is one of the properties that influence its movement through the sand to producing wells. Measurements of viscosity, therefore, are pertinent to problems associated with well behavior and with the estimation of recoveries, and afford an indirect means for partial evaluation of various methods of controlling reservoir behavior. The effect of dissolved gases on the viscosity of crude oil has been determined,1,2 but no data have been published on the viscosity of repre-sentative samples of reservoir oils. This paper describes a simple instrument that has been used to determine the viscosities of a number of subsurface oil samples at the temperatures and pressures existing in the reservoirs, and presents the results of the determinations for typical fields.

Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. The pressure-temperature relations required to maintain the existence of Si3N4 in silicon-iron of 0.44-11.7 pet Si have been partially explored. The critical data obtained have allowed the calculation of some thermodynamic quantities, and have shown evidence of an order-disorder two-phase field extending at 800°C from about l pet to 5.5 pet Si. THE presence of silicon nitride in electrical sheet, nominally about 3 1/4 pet silicon, balance iron, has been described by several authors'" but there has been some discrepancy among them regarding the identity of the nitride. Also, little has been reported on the quantitative thermodynamic prop- erties. In the work to be reported here, the nitride has been found to be more stable than described by Corney and Turkdogan." Several silicon nitrides have been described in the past, including SiN, Si3N4 and Si2N4 (see, for example, Abegg6 and Pascal7). However, the literature on nitrides other than Si,N, is all very old. No recent investigators using the more powerful tools available today have reported the presence of any nitride other than S3,N4. W. B. Hicke and L. R. "The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co. and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behaviour of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-48N stope, 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behaviour of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modelled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modelling. In addition, a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.45-48N StopeThe 45-48N stope is located in the 21 ledge between the 6500 and 6650 levels and contains about 233 000 short tons of mineable ore. The orebody lies within the Homestake Formation and is very irregular being approximately 200 ft long and 75 ft wide. Between the 6500 and 6650 levels, it dips from 35 degrees to 60 degrees east with a near-vertical plunge to the south. Mineralization is characterized by arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite with minor gold. The contact between the Homestake and the overlying Ellison Formation creates a plane of weakness along localized graphitic layers. The footwall dips at approximately 60 degrees but between 100 ft and 120 ft above the 6650 level , the hanging wall flattens to almost 20 degrees causing a significant mining problem."

The results of a pile load test on a 1200 mm dia and 25 m long bored Cast-in-situ pile in soft rock is reported. The subsoil has a high N value of above 60 from 7 m to 21 m. The soft rock was observed below 21 m and N value exceeded 100. The theoretical calculations showed that the safe carrying capacity will be about 410 t. But the actual load test on the pile indicated that the allowable load is only about 140 t. This is attributed to the fact that the soil is cemented and loses strength due to remoulding caused by pile installation. It is concluded that great care should be exercised in determining the carrying capacity of piles in cemented soils and soft rocks and that 'N' value alone should not be used.

"A p-type Czochralski silicon ingot doped with boron was characterized for resistivity, minority carrier lifetime, interstitial oxygen, and metallic impurities. Analyses show a peak in resistivity and a dip in lifetime both occur 5 cm from the top of the ingot crown. This peak in resistivity deviates from the expected trend based on Scheil's equation for boron distribution. High concentration of interstitial oxygen in this area suggests that other oxygen-related defects, such as thermal donors and precipitates, may also be present here, and the observed peak in resistivity and dip in lifetime could be attributed to such defects. The low lifetime of 15-30 µs at minority carrier density of 7.5 x 1014 cm-3 is likely due to copper contamination.IntroductionSolar energy resources vastly exceed all other alternative energy resources, ensuring that solar power must play a crucial role in the evolving energy market. The economic viability of solar power in competition with other energy resources depends upon finding efficient, cost-effective, reliable, and controlled methods for solar cell production. In this regard, minimizing waste (such as material with unsuitable electrical properties that hinder solar cell performance) is a vital component of making solar cell manufacturing cost-effective. Impurities affect electrical properties of solar cell silicon in different ways (i.e. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]). In this work we focus on the role of oxygen and metallic impurities. Understanding oxygen impurities in silicon is critical to solar cell development because oxygen has been attributed with influencing critical electrical properties including resistivity and minority carrier lifetime and thereby potentially hindering solar cell performance or rendering material unsuitable for solar cells.[1, 2] Furthermore, oxygen is a common impurity in the standard type of solar cell silicon, Czochralski (CZ) silicon, due to diffusion of oxygen from the silica crucible into the melt during crystallization. [7] This study investigates the effects oxygen impurities have on the electrical properties of p-type CZ silicon."

Metallurgical treatments of sulfide ores containing copper and zinc are characterized by significant losses of base metals, particularly formation of the flotation tailings and slags during the dressing and pyrometallurgical treatment respectively. In addition, SO2 gas obtained during roasting and converting may be as raw material for sulfuric acid production. A treatment of the industrial metallurgical wastes has been investigated. Two samples of old pyrite tailings from two concentrators that contained 0.36% and 0.26% of copper and 0.23% and 0.22% of zinc were leached with 10% sulfuric acid in the column. Recovery of copper reached 47% and 38% while recovery of zinc was 47% and 41% from the first and second samples, respectively. The pregnant leach solutions contained 15.9 g/l and 10.5 g/l of ferric iron. Ferric iron is the strong oxidant and ferric containing pregnant leach solutions can be used for ferric leaching of different types of raw materials containing sulfide minerals. Therefore, ferric leaching of copper converter slag flotation tailings contained 0.53% of copper and 2.77% of zinc with the first pregnant leach solution was conducted. The effect of various experimental parameters on the leaching dynamics of copper, zinc, and iron under batch conditions was investigated. Under the best conditions (temperature 70oC, pulp density 30%) the recovery of copper and zinc reached 80% and 42%, respectively. Thus, it has been shown that acid leaching of base metals from old pyrite flotation tailings with using of the pregnant leach solution for the ferric leaching of copper converter slag flotation tailings is a prospective technique for the complex treatment of mining and metallurgical wastes. Investigated processes could be introduced into the technological flow-sheet of typical pyrometallurgical plants.

CRANGES in construction ideas and the continually rising costs of labour and conventional building materials, particularly since World War II, have prompted widespread investigations into the development and adaptation of new materials to meet the new requirements and to help reduce costs. Lightweight aggregates have been prominent in these investigations. The lightweight aggregates most commonly used today are foamed slag, cinders, pumice, diatomite, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite, and bloated clay or shah. Lightweight aggregates contribute to the building industry in several ways: ( 1) in large structures the reduction in deadweight effected by the use of lightweight materials reduces the amount of reinforcing and structural steel necessary to support the structure; ( 2) the decrease in weight of lightweight blocks makes handling easier and faster; (3) pre-fabricated floor and roof slabs and tilt-up walls of lightweight concrete have become feasible and popular; ( 4) lightweight aggregate concrete has good nailability and is easily channelled; (5) concrete and plaster made with lightweight aggregate have good heat and sound insulation properties.

While not a new construction technique "top/down" construction is seeing increased use in high rise building construction. Using diaphragm wall, drilled shaft and mining construction techniques, top/down construction enables construction of both the below grade basements and high rise structure simultaneously. To date the top/down method has been used on at least four major building projects in the United States. This paper will review the economic, engineering, construction and schedule issues associated with top/down technology on two projects -Olympia Centre, Chicago, and One Westwood, Los Angeles. Top/Down construction is currently under consideration on several additional projects in the United States.

Most electric motor predictive maintenance methods have drawbacks that limit their effectiveness in the mining environment. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an alternative approach to detect winding insulation breakdown in advance of complete motor failure. In order to evaluate the analysis algorithms necessary for this approach, the USBM has designed and installed a system to monitor 120 electric motors in a coal preparation plant. The computer-based experimental system continuously gathers, stores, and analyzes electrical parameters for each motor. The results are then correlated to data from conventional motor-maintenance methods and in-service failures to determine if the analysis algorithms can detect signs of insulation deterioration and impending failure. This paper describes system design and implementation. At this writing, however, installation is still underway, and field data analysis results are not yet available.

Mining operations must become more predictable to overcome the volatility that has characterised the mining industry. Comparisons of production against predictions will become more consistent as mining operations merge and expand, as personnel move from site to site, and as public reporting of reconciliations becomes more prevalent. More consistent approaches are already being seen in the industry using the terminology used in this paper and elsewhere.Examples are provided that show how use of the waterfall chart as a reconciliation management tool can provide objective analysis to improve practices.Geometallurgical modelling is becoming more useful and will continue to do so as we move from a few bulk samples to better interpretation of material properties from geological mapping and drill sampling. Reconciliation has evolved to the stage where predictions of geometallurgical properties to optimise mill performance, and of geotechnical properties derived from better 3D geological models, should also be reconciled.CITATION:Shaw, W J, 2014. The Mining Engineering Society of the State College of Washington, Pullman, Wash., has elected the following officers for this semester: F. MASON, President, WILLIAM WHITE, Vice-President,. L. E. TRAEGER, Secretary and Treasurer. The Society holds meetings every two weeks at which papers on mining and metallurgical topics are presented by students and members, of the faculty. At the meeting of Oct. 25, Prof. H. R. Robbins gave an interesting talk upon the Rankin Process for the treatment of base-metal ores. In this process the metals are extracted by the use of nitric acid, the acid -being recovered almost entirely. Prof. Robbins thinks the process has great possibilities, but it has not yet been worked on a commercial scale. The Missouri Mining Association, the student organization at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., has. elected the following officers for the ensuing year: L. W. EHLERS, President, H. A. Pig iron and silicospiegeleisen were produced experimentally from a very low-grade manganiferous iron ore from Steep Rock, Ontario, by a two-stage electric smelting process. The most favourruble operating conditions were determined for each stage. Cement clinker then was made by calcining the slag from the second stage of smelting, with additional limestone and alumina. (This slag would normally be a waste material). The cement clinker produced had the composition of commercial Portland cement, and met the physical test requirements of the Canadian Standards Association Specification A5-1951 for normal Portland cement as well as could be expected for a material produced on .such a small scale.

The relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen's compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent, of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent, or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also of his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics, compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa, to be due in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are due to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 21/2 years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management—in short were due to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector.
