A study of fluid mechanics, rupture of brittle materials and the theory of elastic deformation of rocks shows that, for a given formation, crack width is essentially controlled by fluid pressure drop in the fracture. Operating conditions which cause high pressure drop along the crack (such as high injection rate and viscous fluids) will result in relatively wide cracks. Conversely, operating conditions which cause low pressure drop (low injection rates and thin fluids) will result in relatively narrow cracks. Charts and equations have been derived which permit the estimation of fracture widths for a variety of flow conditions and for both horizontal and vertical fractures. INTRODUCTION There has been considerable speculation concerning the geometry of hydraulically created fractures in the earth's crust. One of the questions of practical importance is the width of fractures under dynamic conditions, i.e., while the fracture is being created and extended. Such width information could be used, for instance, to help estimate the area of a fracture generated under various conditions. Also, there has been a recent trend toward the use of large propping partiles.13, 15 Therefore is is desirable to know what factors can be varied in order to assure entry of the large particles into the fracture. There has been some work on fracture widths reported in the literature. In particular, there have been several Russian publications dealing with this sub-jeCt.1.31,3 These papers have dealt principally with the elastic theory and the application of this theory to hydraulic fractures. These studies have not led to an engineering method for estimating fracture widths under dynamic conditions. A recent paper3 has reviewed and summarized the Russian concepts. An earlier paper- from our laboratories also discussed the application of the elastic theory to hydraulic fractures. This first approach, based largely on photoelastic studies, has proved to be too simplified to accurately describe the fracturing process. However, these early thoughts have served as a guide during the development of more exact concepts. We would like to present in this paper our current concepts regarding fracture widths and some estimates of hydraulic fracture widths for several conditions. We believe that it is now possible to predict with fair accuracy the factors influencing fracture widths. Furthermore, the method of prediction has been reduced to a simple and convenient graphical or numerical calculation. CRACKS IN A BRITTLE, ELASTIC MATERIAL Many investigators2, 4, 30 have shown that competent rocks behave elastically over some range of stresses. Of course, if the tensile stress imposed upon a rock exceeds some limiting value, then the rock will fail in tension. In similar manner, there are some limiting shear stresses that can be imposed upon rocks. Hubbert and Willis11 have discussed the shear conditions which will lead to failure. Under moderate stress conditions (such as those likely to be encountered when hydraulically fracturing) and when stresses are rapidly applied, relatively, most rocks will fail in a brittle manner. Hence, for this discussion of hydraulic fractures in the earth's crust, we assume the rocks behave as brittle, elastic materials. Let us develop the discussion in the following way. (The following thoughts are applicable only to brittle materials.) 1. First we consider a brittle, elastic system. An energy balance will show the minimum pressure necessary to fracture rock, and from this pressure we calculate the minimum crack width resulting from extension of a hydraulic fracture. 2. Then we will show that, under ordinary fracturing conditions, fracture widths are appreciably greater than the minimum widths of extending fractures. In fact, we will find that crack width is controlled by fluid pressure drop in the fracture. 3. We will discuss pressure drops in fractures and resulting crack widths for various operating conditions and both vertical and horizontal fractures. 4. Finally, we will discuss the significance of these concepts, their relationship to fracturing pressures, etc. First, consider minimum fracture extension pressures. We can shed some light on this question by considering the theory proposed by Griffith7, 8 Yo explain the rupture of brittle, elastic materials. Griffith recognized that solid materials exhibit a surface energy8 (similar to surface tension in a liquid). The employment of continuous rotary vacuum disc filters to filter refuse from the fine coal washing circuits has been increasing as it has become more important to close the water circuits and eliminate sludge holding ponds. This paper will discuss our past experience filtering refuse, effects of solids concentration in the filter feed, use of polymer flocculation aids, effect of flocculation devices, and effects of particle size and ash content on the filtration rate. Detailed tests were performed on existing installations utilizing coal refuse filters to determine optimum flocculant dosage, solids concentration, and disc rotation speed to form a dischargeable cake. Information was also obtained showing effect of flocculant addition on the moisture of the filter cake. Our test work has shown that the continuous filtration dry cake rates for fine coal refuse correlates very well with the data developed and presented by Silverblatt and Dahlstrom1 except that the curves have moved up the scale by use of polymer flocculant additions. These polymers were not available at that writing. Finally, our tests also confirmed the general premise stated by S. K. Mishra2 that controlled additions of polymer flocculants will reduce filter refuse cake moistures somewhat.

Wall control is a significant issue for many mines. Improvements to the design process for blasts adjacent to temporary or final walls will require better measurement tools and predictive models. Orica Explosives has developed capability in both these areas and uses them to guide better wall control blasting practices. Vibration and gas pressure were monitored behind a series of production blasts and single hole blasts at the Freeport Grasberg Operations Opencut Mine. The blasts used ANFO in both 3 11 mm and 35 1 mm blastholes in a blast design which reduced the charge weight by between 30 to 50% in the final row of the production blasts. Single hole blast data were obtained by delaying the last hole in the production blast. Vibration levels were within the range often associated with vibration induced damage: 178 to 1080 mm/s at distances between 14-75 metres from the blast.

Ion exchange resin processes are receiving renewed attention in the mining industry for recovery;, of metals from solution. This interest has been inspired by the development of continuous countercurrent ion; exchange systems (CCIX) which are of much lower cost than the original, fixed bed contactor processes. With the countercurrent systems and new developments to process or upgrade the eluate product, ion exchange can now compete successfully with solvent extraction for treatment of uranium ores. The low concentration of U308 obtained in the CCIX strong eluate is generally upgraded by solvent extraction methods in sulfuric acid systems. Resin loadings of up to 120 grams per liter of U308, however, have been produced experimentally by recycling of eluate (HIM-IX process) and further developments may be expected in the near future. New developments in resin technology are bringing forth products of greater strength, loading capacity, selectivity and density. Densities up, to 1.35 spgr have been claimed by some suppliers. The process is not a new one and has taken years to advance to the present state of development. The earliest system to gain widespread acceptance was the resin-in-pulp system applied to uranium recovery. Ion exchange, however, later lost acceptance in favor of solvent extraction in the 1960's due to problems in resin degradation, resin contamination and resin-pulp separation, in addition to the development of improved solvent extraction reagents and techniques. The resin-in-pulp system continues to have application on high clay ores and has advanced in design. A number of other continuous ion exchange systems were also tried but never gained continued acceptance. In the current resurgence period the CCIX systems to gain acceptance were the Utah and Chem-Sep (Higgins Loop) systems. These processes are relatively simple in concept although require sophisticated controls. Fixed bed columns have also been designed into multistage systems in countercurrent operation but are not discussed in this paper. These systems remain competitive today for many applications. The most recent advancements however have been in the multistage contactors from,, which three are in current acceptance. These are the Himsley, Porter, and NIM systems. All industrial applications of these systems are relatively new, although pilot plant and in-plant development has been in progress over the last decade. Fur36ther developments should be expected in the near future.

"Beneficiation of alumina rich iron ore slimes is a major challenge for the Indian iron ore industry. High alumina is deleterious for the performance of both blast furnace as well as sintering plants. Slimes generally contain 5 - 10% alumina, and hence despite assaying as high as 60% Fe, those are dumped in tailing ponds. The slimes are typically less than 37 microns. Selective flocculation of iron ore slimes using highly selective reagents is thus an option worth exploring. Our research is directed at employing state-of-the-art molecular modeling techniques for the selection/design of selective reagents for this separation. We have earlier reported our results on starch as a selective flocculant for iron ore slimes. In this paper, we present our results on the selective dispersion-flocculation of natural iron ore slimes using guar gum flocculant. With careful selection of various process parameters such as flocculant dosage, dispersant dosage, pH and settling time, we were able to obtain a concentrate assaying >66% Fe and <3.5% Al2O3 with an yield of 65 to 68% (recovery of iron values more than 70%) from a natural iron ore slime sample assaying 58% Fe and 7% Al2O3."

"The estimation of recoverable ore reserves for feasibility in precious metal deposits such as Pine Creek must account not only f or the extreme variability of the ore grade but also for the complexity of the geology. Compatible models f or both must be adopted. Further, very selective mining demands reserve estimates be based on small selection units whose individual grades cannot be estimated reliably from the exploration drilling data.Multigaussian kriging is one method based on a multivariate normal model for estimating recoverable reserves under such conditions. In this paper, a non-mathematical description of the multigaussian model is presented together with its application to the Pine Creek Gold Deposit. The results, when compared to the first year of production, are encouraging for the model but not without surprises.Together, Part 1 and Part 2 of this study combine a detailed and geologically conditioned variogram analysis with an appropriate estimation method for a highly variable low-grade gold deposit. This and other studies of gold deposits familiar to the author show convincingly both that while the appropriate geostatistical skills and techniques are necessary to tackle the question of reserves, equally important but often discounted is the need for an appropriate and compatible geological model. IntroductionThe Pine Creek gold mineralization is associated with saddle reefs, and quartz and quartz- sulphide veining within the Enterprise Anti cline. The anticlinal structure is complex and, prior to mining, the mineralization was considered to be mainly strata controlled. Grades vary up to 160 grams in l .5rn core samples with coefficients of variation in excess of three.The estimation of the recoverable reserves for such a depo sit must account for both the geological complexity and the extreme variability of the gold grade.Part 1 of this work presented the geological model for the deposit and summary statistics 0 f the gold data. A detailed structural and variogram analysis considered both gold grades and the normal score (or gaussian transform) of these gold grades for different composite sizes."

The fire hazard of neoprene, polyvinyl chloride, and rubber conveyor belts was studied at the Federal Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine. The effects of intensity of ignition source, velocity of the ventilating air, and type of belt were investigated at three levels in small-scale gallery experiments. Studies were made in the mine on the effects on ignition and flame propagation of belt-entry dimensions, belt widths, and belt configuration. Methods for extinguishing belt fires were also investigated under simulated mining conditions, and during these trials coal dust and grease were placed on the belt. The research showed that conveyor belts will burn. Neoprene, polyvinyl chloride, and rubber belts, with and without carcass, ignited and propagated flame. The highest rate of flame propagation was obtained on rubber belt. The fire hazard increased with increase in intensity of ignition source and air velocity. Flame propagated only when air was forced through the test zone; propagation was not obtained when forced ventilation was not used, as would exist in a neutral entry in a mine. Automatic water sprays and high-expansion foam effectively arrested flame propagation; direct application of water and bicarbonate dusts was ineffective.

At Sams Creek a peralkaline granite porphyry dyke hosts gold-bearing sulfide-quartz-siderite veins. The granite dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite, and has thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The mineralised veins and the granite and lamprophyre dykes have been deformed during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with early magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration overprinted by sulfide and quartz-siderite veins and quartz-perthite-albitesiderite-pyrite-rutile¦sericite alteration assemblages. The sulfide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, with minor quartz and siderite. The gold contains significant silver (up to 30.8 wt per cent) and ranges in fineness from 692 to 844. Immiscible liquid-rich fluid inclusions, in quartz protected from recrystallisation by enclosing arsenopyrite, contain carbonic liquid that homogenised at temperatures of 320 - 355¦C. The Sams Creek gold deposit is distinguished from the orogenic gold deposit type by its stockwork veining, magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration, high sulfide content, ore mineralogy and the absence of mineralisation in the metapelite country rocks. Features of the Sams Creek gold deposit do not fit neatly into existing classifications of granite-related gold-bearing deposits. The peralkaline composition of the Sams Creek granite and the absence of molybdenite and paucity of chalcopyrite, are major points of difference with gold-rich porphyry copper deposits. The presence of a lowsulf idation-state ore mineral assemblage, carbonate alteration and carbonic fluid inclusions at Sams Creek are typical of many of the reduced granitic intrusion-related type of gold deposit. However, notable differences are: the reduced type granites are metaluminous and calc-alkaline; and Sams Creek only has high As in contrast to elevated Bi, W, As, Mo, Te, and Sb in the reduced type. The Sams Creek deposit also shows affinities with gold deposits associated with alkaline magmatism, and it appears to be a new variant of this type as an As-Au deposit associated with a peralkaline granite and lamprophyre.

In the number of the Engineering and Mining Journal for April 7th, 1877, Mr. W. P. Ward, of Cartersville, Georgia, explains in a very interesting manner, the results he obtained in the manufacture of ferromanganese in the blast furnace. These results may be summed up as follows : Production in the blast furnace of an alloy containing 67.2 per cent. manganese and 3 per cent. of carbon at most, with a utilization of the manganese amounting to 58 per cent. With the exception of the indicated proportion of&apos; carbon, which should be almost doubled to express the true state of facts, we would have had no observations to make on Mr. Ward&apos;s paper had he taken into account the results obtained in the same line in other centres of production. Before 1870, spiegel with 8 or 10 per cent. manganese only was known among blast-furnace products. With the depletion of easy-to-treat phosphate resources, low quality phosphate ores with high carbonates, particularly dolomite impurities have to be mined to meet the agricultural demand because of the continued growth of world population. The separation of dolomite from phosphate has been recognized as one of the most difficult subjects in mineral processing due to the similarities in their physical and chemical properties. Flotation is considered the most important approach for beneficiating both easy-to-treat and high impurity phosphate resources. There is no doubt that the development of reagents is the key for achieving satisfactory separation performance through flotation process. In order to separate dolomite from phosphate, Arr-Maz Custom Chemicals has made great efforts in developing flotation reagents for removal of carbonates from phosphate ores of different origins worldwide. This paper describes some flotation reagents and processes for the separation of dolomite or/and calcite impurities from phosphate in the ores from different locations.

The importance of adequate mine ventilation for good health and safety conditions has been recognized since miners first ventured underground. All over the world, governmental actions on mine health and safety are directly connected with mine atmospheric environments, their assessment and control. These governmental actions have been, and continue to be, motivated by the repeated experience that potential threats from inadequate control can evolve, either suddenly or in the long-term, into unpleasant reality, with catastrophic health and safety consequences. These governmental actions are also an indication of the remarkable professional progress being made in the field of mine ventilation. Surely, no developed country allows underground mines to operate without strong measures for the control of ventilation under legislation specific to the mining industry. In the United States, the federal government&apos;s responsibility for mine safety has evolved over the years through a series of legislative actions beginning in 1865 and continuing through 1910, 1941, 1947 and 1952. The passage of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966 (the 1966 Metal Act), the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (the 1969 Coal Act) and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (the 1977 Mine Act) are the most important milestones in this long legislative history. The 1977 Mine Act adopted many of the stronger features of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970, perhaps the most significant piece of legislation on workers&apos; occupational health and safety in US history. It is worthwhile to ask, "How far has the United States come in mine ventilation since the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act?" This Act and its associated regulations defined in great specificity many standards for healthful and safe operation of a mine and, in some cases, what constitutes good ventilation practice. Since 1969, the frequency and severity of disaster-type events in US coal mines has decreased markedly. A primary reason for this achievement is the strength of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act&apos;s regulatory features in such areas as methane concentration control, dust control, intrinsic safety and explosion-proof enclosures, minimum air quantity and quality standards and air distribution and escapeway provisions. These requirements greatly influenced mine ventilation planning, engineering and practice, leading to increasingly safe working conditions.

Important carboxylic acid components of tall oils were tested individually as phosphate flotation reagents. These included C18 unsaturated fatty acids and C10 to C18 saturated fatty acids and resin acids. These experiments were conducted to evaluate such factors as the degree of unsaturation, hydro-carbon chain length, isomeric form, side-group modification, and cyclic structure. The effects of mineralogical characteristics on flotation response also were considered. Results of this systematic evaluation provide guidelines for selecting efficient substitute reagents and fundamental data for further research on improved flotation technology.

Experimental results for the distribution ratios of various elements between the slag, matte and/or copper in the silica-saturated copper smelting system were summarized. The experiments were carried out under an oxidative smelting condition with S02 gas flow, and also a reductive smelting condition equilibrating with metallic copper or iron. To evaluate the results thermodynamically, the availability of one atom cation base expression for the constituent compounds is emphasized from both of theoretical and practical standpoints. Both of oxidic and sulfidic dissolutions in slag are postulated for some elements such as copper, nickel and lead., and the experimental results are reasonably explained thermo-dynamically. The results for the mutual solubility between matte and ferrite slag and the distribution of minor elements between liquid copper and ferrite slag are also discussed.

Up until ten years ago the industry had arrived at a relatively conventional, and consistent design of coke ovens. Through the years the designers and builders were not being heavily taxed to come up with revolutionary new designs. However, the stimulus for design change was ever present. These stimuli for change are quite important and they are the driving force which produce improvements. The most obvious stimulus to change a design is commercial. To "build a better mouse trap and the world will beat a path to your door" is the well used cliche which best befits this philosophy. As in all businesses, coke oven designs require that all of the considerations, which affect the cost or the desirability of the design, be optimized. One way to increase the desirability of the particular design, 1s to make the design in- expensive to operate. Or, put another way, to increase production for the same operating cost

THE purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical pros-pecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field.

Dolomite-fluxed pellets of various compositions were made from magnetite concentrate, hematite concentrate and a concentrate containing a natural mixture of both. Physical properties and reduction test results were used to ascertain proper compositions and firing temperatures. These pellets were subjected to physical tests and to reduction tests. Petrographic and electron microprobe examinations were made to evaluate the effect of composition and fining on the phase assemblage. We interpreted our test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure and related these to properties. This approach enabled w to determine the composition best suited to each of the three concentrates. Compared with acid pellets, dolomite- fluxed pellets of the optimum compositions had similar physical properties but swelled less, softened at a higher temperature, and reduced faster and more completely.

SPOT imagery acquired in May 1986 of the areas that include the Dugald River lead-zinc lode, northwest Queensland, Australia and the Ngwenalekau copper deposit, Botswana has been evaluated and compared with LANDSAT MSS imagery of the same areas. The data have been processed using band combinations, band ratioing, principal components analysis and classificatory techniques and the outputs compared with those of geobotanical, geochemical and biogeochemical data as well as geological information. For both study areas the image processing techniques cited have successfully distinguished discrete vegetation associations related to discrete surficial and bedrock geological units; and, notwithstanding the sharp contrasts between the nature of the geobotanical anomalies that in both areas occur over mineralised bedrock in Proterozoic sedimentary sequences, they have successfully identified the areas of anomalous vegetation over the mineral deposits. Greater vegetational and geological detail is revealed than on outputs generated from LANDSAT MSS data [see Cole, 1977, 1982(a) and (b)]. The additional information yielded by SPOT imagery compared with LANDSAT MSS imagery results from its greater spatial resolution - 20 metres as against 79 metres - and from ti fact that the three SPOT MSS spectral bands - 0.50 0.59um, 0.615-0.68um and 0.79-0.89um - respectivelc cover those sections of the electro-magnetic spectrum in which leaf pigments, notably chlorophyll, absorption for photosynthesis and leaf cell structure strongly influence reflectance. This accords opportunities for the detection of reflectance aberrations caused by stress due to drought and/or metal toxicity as well as for the identification of anomalous vegetation communities of moderate sizr These cannot be accurately discriminated on LANDSA I MSS imagery on which only very large geobotanical anomalies like that over the Lady Annie phosphate deposit in northwest Queensland [Cole, 1977, 1984; Cole and Owen-Jones, 19771 can be detected.
