Gold mining require high levels of dilution control due the high value of ore. These types of operations employ short benches, which are suitable for ore control, lower displacement and more representative block models. However, shorter benches makes fragmentation by blasting difficult because blast designs tend to be stiff in regards to burden/bench height ratio. This is especially relevant in hard, massive ore bodies where usual drilling diameters lead to poor energy distribution. In regards to control ore loss and dilution, there are different techniques to minimize both, which include: panel blasting, buffer blasting to muck piles and differential loading of areas of the blast bench. All of them should be sequenced with appropriate displacement along the ore/waste contacts. This paper describes extensive engineering approaches to achieve both dilution control while not hurting fragmentation in the very hard, massive ore sections of a mine case study. Ore Tracker microchips are used to correlate performance of these designs at the SAG mill (bottleneck of this specific operation). Another gold mine uses the same technology to detect when and where operational dilution is happening. The system tells where flagging of the different ore bodies has been followed in order to detect which operators pass the excavation limits beyond ore control flagging.

The Pu-In phase diagram has been determined by thevmal, filtvation, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. This alloy system is characterized by 1) limited solubility of indium (-2 at. pet) in 6 and e plutonium, 2) one eutectic, and 3) fizte intermediate phases. Of the latter, PuIn and PuIn3 melt con-gruently, and Pu31n, Pu31n5, and the high-temperatuve 7 solid solution are formed peritectically. The n phase decomposes eutectoidally into Pu3In and PuIn at 865°C. Although the 6 phase can readily be retained to room temperature, it is not thermo-dynamically stable below 300°C. The Pu-In system has been investigated at Los Alamos as part of a study of the alloys of plutonium with the group 111-B elements. Constitutional studies of the Pu-A1 and Pu-Ga systems have been reported earlier.'9' To date, published information on the constitution of Pu-In alloys covers only the identification of the intermediate phases Pu3In and PuIn3.3,4 EXPERIMENTAL The alloys were prepared from five different lots of plutonium and three different lots of indium. The principal impurities in the plutonium differed from lot to lot within the following limits (in ppm): iron, 30 to 80; nickel, 30 to 60; aluminum, 15 to 30; silicon, 20 to 145: thorium, 50 to 300; carbon, 75 to 335; and oxygen, 20 to 135. Spectroanalysis of the indium showed that two of the lots were 99.9 wt pct pure, and the third was 99.98 wt pct pure. The alloys, in the form of about 5-g buttons, were prepared by arc melting in conventional equipment. The components for each alloy were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. In most instances the weight losses during melting were negligible; therefore confirmatory chemical analyses were usually not made. A few results are given in Table I. Density measurements of the arc-cast buttons were made by the liquid displacement of bromoben-zene. Heat treating was done in muffle furnaces controlled to +2°C. The alloy buttons were wrapped in tantalum foil before being enclosed in evacuated clear silica capsules. As a precaution against breakage, each capsule was in turn placed in a silica tube closed with a refractory wool plug prior to being charged into the furnace. For a moderately fast quench of the alloys, the outer protection tubes containing the capsules were plunged into cold water. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) in racuo were performed at heating and cooling rates of about 1.5°C per min. Tantalum crucibles having inverted thermocouple wells were used for most of the analyses. It was found micrographically, however, that the liquid alloys containing more than about 35 at. pct In reacted with the tantalum, resulting in contamination of the surface of the alloy. A search for a more satisfactory crucible material was not successful: tungsten and yttria behaved comparably to tantalum; thoria, vitrified magnesia, and vitrified alumina severely contaminated the alloys. To determine the potentialities of nickel as a substitute for cobalt in catalysts for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, RESULTS The maximum oil yields obtained in bench-scale equipment were as follows: Using 100N1:20Mn:100 kaolin:200 diatomaceous earth catalyst, a maximum yield of 133.8 cm.3/m.3 of pure CO+2H2 was obtained from one pass of the feed gas, With a nickel:cobalt mixed catalyst (Ni:Co - 3:7) having the composition 100(Ni+Co):8MgO: 5Th02:200 diatomaceous earth, a maximum of 172.2 cm.3/m.3 of pure C0+2H2 was obtained.

There are circumstances where the ordinary techniques of experimental variography in geostatistics û now in common use despite their recent origin û are not quite successful. This paper describes a new addition to the geostatisticians tool kit developed by one of the renowned leaders in the field to cope specifically with these circumstances. Possible application of this technique will be outlined when it will be seen that there are still problems remaining to be solved in its use for economic evaluation of deposits with irregular mineralisation.

The sub-level caving mining method has been applied in base metal mines in Canada under a wide range of ore body and wall rock conditions. This method has been used for primary, as well as secondary mining of both small and large ore bodies of varying ore values. Early experiences of almost all operations were somewhat disappointing. This paper details the initial problems encountered, the design changes made and solutions evolved. Additional experience and the development of operating skills, have helped the method gain acceptance as a viable method for the mining conditions to which it has been adopted.

INTRODUCTION An evaluation of the radiological health risks from uranium mining and milling requires the determination of several key parameters. As shown in Figure 1, the first step is the estimation of the radioactive source term. The radionuclides in the ore consist of the 238U decay series nuclides shown in Figure 2, the 235U series nuclides, and 40K. The 238U decay series isotopes dominate the source term, with the 235U series isotopes causing less concern and 40K remaining at background levels. [ ] Specifically, the risks from uranium mining and milling are mainly associated with 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn, and its short-lived daughters. These radioisotopes are mainly alpha-particle emitters; hence, some dispersion mechanism is necessary to bring them into intimate contact with man so that they can be inhaled or ingested For water pathways, the leaching of the isotopes from [ ] the solid ore or tailings provides a measure of the amount of contaminant initially available to the environment. For the air pathway, dust-creation mechanisms such as blasting, crushing or general resuspension processes dominate for 226Ra and 230Th. However, 222Rn, being a chemically inert gas generated from the decay of 226Ra, can migrate through the ore, overburden and tailings over considerable distances. As shown in Figure 1, the next step in the pathway to man is environmental dilution and delay. For the water transport mechanism, the delay in the isotopes reaching an accessible water supply may be considerable (several thousand years or more), but for airborne nuclides the dispersion in the atmosphere is rapid and constitutes the main mitigating factor. Considerable ventilation is provided in underground mines to dilute and remove radon and its daughters in order to keep their concentrations low and thereby minimize their inhalation by miners. The rate of uptake by both the workers and the general public is often difficult to ascertain. It involves breathing rates, rates of water consumption and other poorly-defined parameters. THE object of the experiments reported in this paper is to determine the eutectic composition of copper and tin and to determine the location of the part of the liquidus line immediately above the eutectic composition in copper. Three methods were used in the investigation: (1) the method of dissolving copper in a bath of molten tin at constant temperature, with the idea that when the bath was saturated with copper its copper content, by analysis, together with the temperature at which the saturation took place would locate a point on the liquidus line (2) the method of the differential cooling curves, and (3) the method of microscopic examination. This paper is principally concerned with the results of the last two methods mentioned. The results of the first method, that of dissolving copper in molten tin, did not agree with the .results of Miller,1 by the same method, nor with the results of other investigators by other methods, nor yet with the results of the cooling-¬curve experiments and microscopic examination reported here.

A primary objective of copper mining, smelting and refining operations is the cost- effective, efficient, and environmentally-acceptable control of the level of various metal ions throughout the processing and effluent treatment flowsheets. Effective ionic control maximizes product and by-product quality, allows for broad flexibility in sourcing impurity laden ores, minimizes capital and operating costs, and can achieve zero discharge operations. In order to meet increasingly stringent cost, environmental and product quality requirements, separation technologies are needed that can selectively remove and recover deleterious or valuable ions. Ideally, the subsequently obtained salts or metals can be recycled in the process, disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner, or sold as valuable by-products. The use of MRT, a highly selective separations technology, has been demonstrated to be a cost effective, efficient, and environmentally- sound treatment for a wide range of cations and anions that are commonly found in copper electrorefining and electrowinning circuits, as well as in environmental treatment operations. These include heavy and transition metals, precious metals, halides and alkali/alkaline earths. This paper will review a number of areas of interest including: recovery and refining of platinum group metals from copper anode slimes, recovery of copper from acid mine drainage streams, extraction of Bi, Sb and C1 from copper electrorefining and electrowinning circuits.

Values for interaction parameters in nonferrous systems, as calculated from published data, are tabulated and discussed. The influence of temperature on the parameter is derived and compared with the results of the literature study. Wagner's relationship between the interaction parameter and the self interaction coefficients is compared with the tabulated data. A problem which has been of considerable interest in the field of metallurgy is the prediction of the effect of one alloying element present in dilute concentration on the thermodynamic properties of another dilute alloying element. Ultimately, the prediction may be accomplished entirely from statistical mechanical considerations. At the present, however, the problem remains unsolved since liquid solution models which are simple enough for analytical treatment are inadequate for such purposes. Thus, we desire some means of organizing the information on dilute systems which will serve as a guide for further study on interactions in dilute alloys, and also provide a basis for the utilization of thermodynamic data in the engineering design of alloys.

The design of mine fire emergency plans requires that the contamination of mines by fumes, and the mutual interaction of fires and ventilation systems be pre-calculated. Several computer models were developed by the Bureau of Mines for this purpose during the last decade. The models advanced in sophistication from the transient-state simulation of fume concentrations for the early stages of a fire to the steady-state simulation of airflow rates, concentrations, and temperatures for fully developed fires, and finally to the complete transient-state simulation of fires and ventilation systems. The principal features of these models are described.

This is the second of a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels made pursuant to a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ These gasoline surveys report results of inspections, in oil-company laboratories, of samples of gasoline obtained by representatives of oil companies from service-station pumps in marketing areas throughout the country. In the present survey are presented inspection data on 239 samples of regular-price gasoline, 166 samples of premium-price gasoline, and 157 samples of third-grade gasoline, a total of 562 samples collected during the summer of 1936.

INTRODUCTION Rock mechanics theory needs to be applied to solve ground control problems, but in the final analysis the mining method and equipment which is used will be those which solve problems in a practical manner. Equipment and its inherent productivity and safety as supplied as "off the shelf" items by manufacturers often dictate the size of mine openings. Operators may tolerate falls of ground and associated hazards if productivity and safety problems are not too severe. In this whole process the costs of mining finally dictates just what system will be employed and what equipment will be used. True solutions to ground control problems sometimes require that the mine operator step back and totally rethink his problems. The true cost of accidents are often missed and hidden in overhead costs. Losses in production and accompanying profit are not fully considered, false economics, such as using inappropriate roof support devices, are undertaken at times when using the most expensive devices to totally eliminate accidents may be the best overall solution. Automation to remove the worker from the hazard area is often over- looked as the initial capitol expense to apply it may be high. Cooperation between mine engineers, mine operators, safety personnel, equipment suppliers, and government inspectors, both state and federal, is required to reach workable solutions that best meet the goals of all parties.

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. The firing of mass blasts at Isa Mine is a normal operating practice. Both electric and non-electric initiating systems are being used for this purpose. The advantages gained by large firings relate to the Planning, Scheduling, Services and Production functions of Isa Mine. More efficient us"e is made of manpower due to the concentrated charging effort and con- tinuity of the charging operation. In addition, the requirement for ring firing personnel to work at the edge of large stope voids is reduced. Better fragmentation results from the interaction of adjacent detonating rings of blastholes and in flight collisions. With mass blasts there is also less chance of large blocks of ore, created by faults or joints, falling into the stope and creating problems at the drawpoints. The formation of a large tonnage of broken ore facilitates production at scheduled rates from that stope source. The weight of explosive detonating during a mass blast can be considerable. Isa Mine has achieved satisfactory blasting results without excessive ground vibration levels and present knowledge indicates that pillar ground stab- ility has been maintained.

"Three-point bend test was used to study the effect of electrochemically charged hydrogen and magnetic field on the embrittlement behavior of AISI 4340 steel in this work. Acoustic emission signals were collected during the test and analyzed to gain an understanding of the crack growth process. Cathodic hydrogen charging in AISI 4340 steel resulted in drastic reduction of ductility and strength. Hydrogen embrittlement was characterized by a change in fracture surface from dimpled ductile surface to quasi cleavage type fracture. No significant effect was observed in the presence of magnetic field. The acoustic emission signals collected during the test provided an indication of the extent of energy released during the crack growth process.*Support of this work by NSF through the award DMR-0854166 is gratefully acknowledgedIntroductionGrowing interest in hydrogen as a clean fuel and use of steel and other iron based alloys for storage and transport of hydrogen has led to extensive study of the influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of these alloys. Hydrogen interaction with materials may result in degradation of mechanical properties. Embrittlement, either ductile or brittle, can be described as a condition which decreases the toughness of the material or increases the ease of crack growth. Hydrogen present even in few parts per million is sufficient to embrittle steels at room temperature [1]. In most cases, hydrogen exposure is through an electrochemical process in aqueous corroding environments. In such cases, they are prone to be exposed simultaneously to electrically induced magnetic fields, which are also believed to affect the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of these alloys. So it is also important to study the effect of magnetic field on the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility. Hydrogen solubility by electrochemical process in aqueous solution is proportional to square root of current density for iron. [2,3]"

AT THE present time five localities in the Argentine Republic are known to bear direct evidences of the presence, of petroleum. The segregation of these localities is more or less arbitrary inasmuch as minor indications may be found to extend from one locality to the other at no regular distance apart, especially in the northern and western part of the republic. These localities are listed as follows: North Argentine-Bolivian region, Salta-Jujuy district, provinces of Mendoza and Neuquen, Comodoro Rivadavia, and the Gallegos-Punta Arenas region. Economic conditions attract us to the possibilities of developing these and other regions of countries in the southern hemisphere. Development work will, naturally, be undertaken first in such localities as present direct manifestations of the presence of petroleum; "hidden fields" may exist, but, unless discovered by accident, their development will be left to the last. The problems to be solved in the development of the petroleum resources of the Argentine republic are mainly of stratigraphy, structure, and transportation. We are not here concerned with the unfavorable climate of the countries to the north in the tropics where, for us of the "far north," life hangs by a thread ready to be severed by a mosquito, gnat, or tropical germ.

Triaxial compression tests with independently applied external confining pressures and internal pore pressures show that the ultimate compressive strengths of representative oil well cements are nearly linear functions of effective pressure — the difference between external and internal pressures on the jacketed cylindrical specimens (to 15,000 psi). The strengths are little affected by the test temperature to 350F (not to be confused with the curing temperature). At an effective pressure of 15,000 psi, strengths are in the rage of 30,000 to 50,000 psi, comparable to those of sedimentary rocks under similar conditions. The cements become very ductile even under low effective pressures; permanent shortenings of 30 per cent or more are attainable without rupture. INTRODUCTION Since the pioneering work of Richart, Brandtzaeg and Brown1 on the failure of cement under combined compressive stresses, it has been recognized that ultimate compressive strength is greatly enhanced by the application of confining pressure. More recently, Mc Henry2 showed that the strength of concrete was a linear function of the effective pressure (the difference between the external confining pressure on a jacketed specimen and the internal fluid pore pressure), at least for a range of 0 to 1,500 psi. The effect of temperature had not been investigated, and no previous systematic triaxial compression testing of naterials used for oilwell cementing seems to have been done. The present work was suggested by the late J. hi. Bugbee3 who stated that "consideration of the common application of high-pressure hydraulic fracturing to the initial completion or recompletion of wells, and the large pressure drawdowns in some producing wells, particularly those in abnormally high-pressure gas-condensate reservoirs, raises the question of what is a suitable cement strength for various completions. The intuitive belief exists that cement strength need be no greater than formation strength. Tests should, however, be conducted at downhole conditions." The ultimate compressive strengths of rocks penetrated by the borehole must rise several fold with increasing depth.4 This marked enhancement of strength is due to the influence of the effective pressure, the total weight per unit area of the overburden less the hydrostatic pore pressure. (The effect of temperature due to the geothermal gradients is relatively small for depths to 30,000 ft.) .A significant comparison of the strengths of rocks and cements at downhole conditions requires knowledge of the confined compressive strengths of cements as well. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The theory and technique of triaxial compression testing are fully discussed in earlier reports.4-6 Briefly, cylindrical specimens 1-in. long and 0.5-in. in diameter are jacketed in thin copper tubes of negligible strength, placed in the test chamber and subjected to an external confining pressure of kerosene and loaded axially by the piston at a strain rate of 1 per cent per minute. Pore pressures of water (or kerosene) are applied independently through the hollow piston and are maintained constant during the shortening of the specimen, Tests at sensibly 0 pore pressure are arranged so that any free water in the cement can escape to the atmosphere. (If egress of water were denied, pore pressure would rapidly attain the value of the external confining pressure because of reduction of pore space.) The test chamber can be heated for high-temperature experiments. Unless otherwise noted, the cement samples were air dried for about a week. Project documents and the United States Army Corps of Engineers? permit for construction of the Stemmers Run Relief Wastewater Force Main across the Back River in Baltimore County, Maryland specified a minimal width, steel sheet pile cofferdam and a 12 feet wide, pile supported, timber decked, causeway trestle ? both approximately 1700 feet in length. Due to the impractical width of the causeway, the contractor desired to combine the cofferdam and the causeway structures in order to minimize wetland disturbance and maximize access for construction equipment. The resulting support structure was a steel sheet pile cofferdam, approximately 17 feet wide, internally braced, and capped with transverse timber deck mats to serve as the access and work trestle for the trench excavation, pipe bent construction, and trench backfill. Construction of this cofferdam/causeway progressed from the north shoreline toward the middle of the river. Then, working back toward the north shoreline, the contractor excavated, installed the 54 inch diameter pipe and H-pile support bents, and backfilled the trench in increments of approximately 60 linear feet. Excavation spoils from one section were used to backfill the preceding section. As the pipe installation progressed toward the north shore, the steel sheet piling and timber deck were removed. As sufficient sheet piling and deck mats were removed, the contractor began the process anew from the opposite shoreline using the reclaimed materials. The project was complicated by the presence of deep, very soft, weight of hammer, silts and organic clays and an unbalanced, hydrostatic head of 20.5 feet. In addition, concurrent pile driving, excavating, and backfilling in successive cofferdam sections required the use of heavy, long reach, hydraulic backhoes, and a 200 ton capacity crawler crane which controlled the design of the timber causeway deck and its supporting sheet piles.
