THE Mahoning Valley coal region lies on the extreme northern outcrop of the Ohio coal-field, and all the mines, with one exception, are opened on the lower coal of the series, No. 1 of the Ohio Geological Survey. The coal ranges from an inch to five, six, and sometimes seven feet thickness, the workable height being between two and a half and six feet. There are two varieties of coal, known in market as "Briar Hill coal " and " Mineral Ridge coal;" both varieties are drawn from the same seam. The Briar Hill coal is generally called block coal, and is the kind so largely used in a raw state in smelting iron. It pos¬sesses a laminated structure, easily splitting into horizontal sheets, but is very difficult to break in the opposite direction. The faces of the layers are often covered with a soft, dead, carbonaceous material, like charcoal, and the whole seam throughout is marked by alternate layers of dead and bright-looking coal. In the act of combustion the coal neither swells nor changes form, the masses retaining their shapes until they fall to ashes in the furnace. Rhenium is a valuable and extremely rare chemical element with unique chemical properties. It is extracted commercially as a byproduct from the processing of molybdenite associated with porphyry copper ores. There is a present interest in recovering rhenium from copper pregnant leach solutions (PLS) produced by copper heap and stockpile leaching. These solutions contain rhenium at very dilute concentrations, typically in the 1 mg/L concentration range. This paper describes laboratory column ion exchange experiments to extract rhenium from these solutions using weakly basic anion exchange resins and actual plant PLS from two operating mines. The dynamic loading and elution behavior of Re on Purolite® A170 and A172 is discussed.

The Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sees. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and secs. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 21/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Marquette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette. History The presence of iron formation in this property has been known for many years, and mining operations on a small scale have been carried on intermittently. The Dexter mine, on the SE.1/4 of the NW.1/4 of sec. 3, was worked from 1883 to 1897 and 118,000 tons of ore was mined. From 1907 to 1915 extensive exploration was carried on over the whole of sec. 3, including 79 diamond-drill holes with a total footage of 26,000 ft. The Chase mine, on the NE.1/4 of the NE.1/4 of sec. 3, was developed from this exploration work, but after about 200,000 tons had been mined the property was abandoned. From 1908 to 1910 exploration was carried on by another company on sec. 4, 47-28, including four drill holes with a total footage of about 5000 ft. Much of the drilling on sec. 3 and of the exploration work on sec. 4 are within the present developed area of the Blueberry mine. A general campaign of diamond-drill exploration was undertaken in 1924, and within a year a considerable amount of ore was developed. The Ford Motor Co. then took an option on the property and carried on check drilling and diamond-drill work until the spring of 1926, when enough ore had been developed to warrant the sinking of a shaft

The Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator (HVCCC) Limited is the primary planning organisation responsible for the export of coal through the Port of Newcastle, Australia. HVCCC stakeholders include producers (mining companies), rail track owners, above rail operators, and terminal operators. The HVCCC is tasked with coordinating the activities of all the corresponding parts of the coal export supply chain so as to maximise the system efficiency. The HVCCC also has a forward looking planning role: with demand for coal expected to double in the next decade, strategic capacity planning is a core activity for the HVCCC. Optimisation and simulation models are key aids in such activity. They are used to suggest and evaluate infrastructure expansions and operating policy changes. These models require input data in the form of shipping stems, which are arrival streams of ships at the port, together with their cargo types and composition, and date and time of arrival.Although everyone is familiar with the expression ægarbage in equals garbage outÆ, relatively little research is dedicated to the issues surrounding input data generation. In this research we seek to redress this, and have developed a method for generating high quality shipping data. Shipping stems used as input should be realistic, reflecting key characteristics of historical patterns. They should accurately represent future demand scenarios. Yet they should also have controllable parameters that can be used to test what-if scenarios, such as are required by the HVCCC to answer questions about future infrastructure or operational plans.Here we review our process for achieving this, and give a case study analysing the effects of different shipping stems on the performance of the coal chain, as measured by a capacity assessment tool. The latter is an optimisation model that takes shipping stem and infrastructure data as input, and calculates key supply chain performance metrics. The potential benefits of alternative demand management strategies are analysed by measuring the performance of the coal chain given different shipping stems obtained via the stem generatorÆs controllable parameters.

Flotation science and technology are related to three major sub- processes which are organized in a hierarchical structure as shown in Fig. 1. The basic sub-process is the chemical process which affects the attachment of air bubbles to mineral particles. In particular, the chem- ical process is related with the adsorption of surface active sub- stances at the gas-liquid, liquid- solid, and gas-liquid-solid inter- faces. This field has been most intensively explored in flotation research. The second domain in flotation research is concerned with the mineral particle to air bubble attachment sub- process in the system. This sub- process represents the dynamics of particle and bubble encounter where the contact angle and the induction time, determined by the surface chem- istry of the system, are among the most significant parameters. This sub-process can be referred to as the micro-process as against the third sub-process, or the macro-process, which corresponds to the integral behaviour of the system. Two other sub-processes are integrated into the macro-process in which they may not reveal themselves explicitly in the details. The third sub-process does not entail surface-chemical or physi- cal events any more, but it represents them all inclusively. To represent this sub-process we use mathematical equations, called models. Only in some simple or simplified cases can the models be solved exactly to find out the behaviour of the flotation system in which we are interested. Digital

Introduction Powered supports in longwall mines essentially operate under two conditions: 1. Static (non-working) 2. Dynamic (working) There is a variety of static conditions which may exist in a mine. These may include a temporary stoppage of work for a few minutes or stoppage of work for days because of strikes or lack of demand for coal. Studies on pressure behavior were made during brief stoppages of work (few hours) as well as a long stoppage of work (two weeks). In dynamic conditions, the pressure variation on supports is expected to follow a certain pattern. However, in many cases that does not happen. Pressure-time characteristics of each leg of the supports were studied. This paper discusses the research findings of the studies made on powered support pressure behavior under both static and dynamic conditions. Studies on Pressure Variation in Static Conditions It has been noted (Brenner et a1.,1975) that the pressure distribution on mechanized longwall faces is random in nature and changes with time and position along the face. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the distribution of support pressures for the front left leg of supports in two different mines. In both the cases it can be seen that the variation of the support pressures along the face is indeed absolutely random. However, the nature of randomness in both the cases is very different. The data in Figure 1 (Mine 1) is much more random than the data in Figure 2 (Mine 2). This can also be seen from the standard deviation of the data (81 26 Pa versus 4000 pa) . By comparing the results of ten other sets of data the same conclusions can be arrived at. Since it was found that in Mine 1, the pressure on support legs was extremely random, batches of ten supports each were taken and the mean pressure plotted. This mean pressure line is shown in Figure 1. It was expected that this would smooth out the variation due to individual props and reveal a better picture of the support pressure distribution. For the case cited, the standard deviation is lowered to 5043 Pa from 8126 Pa which indicates that, on an average, the supports tend to take loads more uniformly, however for individual support legs the load on the supports is very random. The significance of this is that, if the supports are selected on the basis of theoretical load calculations alone (based on the roof block concept or some other concept), only the mean value of the support load required will be known. In the case of a pressure distribution with a high standard deviation, some supports selected on the basis of mean value will fail, while others will be supporting low loads. Hence, for proper selection of support capacity, it is not only necessary to know the average load but also the expected nature of the distribution. The only reason why the supports are supporting the roof in Mine 1 well is the fact that the yield load is above the highest level of load attained. If Mine 2, which has a much higher average load, had the same sort of standard deviation, the loads on the individual legs could easily exceed the support load. For example, if the pressure distribution followed a normal curve and the mean pressure was 36,700 Pa with a standard deviation of 9000 Pa, it is possible that 67% of the supports will be within the pressure range of 36,700 plus or minus 9,000 Pa, or 22,700 and 45,700 Pa. Many of the supports could then exceed the yield load of 40,000 Pa. It is clear then that the mean load is an inadequate criterion for estimating support resistance. The nature of the problem is statistical and such an analysis should therefore be made as far as pressure data are concerned. Statistical Analysis of Pressure Data. ALTEK has developed a processing system that can receive large pieces of dross & bath, of various metal contents, and reduce and separate these highly metallic concentrates into oxides and non-metallics. This system achieves these results without grinding the metallics into fines. Its unique feature results in the preservation of metallic unit in its largest possible size, which allows for maximum .metal recoveries. The Tumbler, an ALTEK-Didion International joint development, and the ALTEK High Velocity Impacting System (HVIS) are the key elements to this process. This paper will explore the advantage of this cold cleaning system over the direct melting of the raw dross in the reduction of landfill waste. The system also works well for removal of the aluminum from bath from primary smelters.

"SummaryActive loaded strand anchors are often used for slope stabilization, retaining walls or tiedown anchors. Normally, strands are tensioned against the structure and wedges are locked inside the anchorages at a certain lock-off load. During the life of the structure, anchors can receive additional loading during a surcharge, seismic event or other activity on the structure.In order to have a reliable ground anchor system, the strand must not slip through the anchorage wedges during its service life. Strand slippage has been reported during lock-off, when dirty wedge plates and wedges have been used. Low lock-off loads are believed to contribute to strand slippage too. Since the initial lock-off load for a ground anchor is usually lower than the lock-load for an equivalent capacity tendon in other types of post-tensioning construction, there is a concern that strand slippage may occur if the load on the anchor increases above the initial lock-off load.Corrosion protection grout, placed after the anchor is locked off, fills the pocket and surrounds the strand and wedges. Some anchor installers believe that the grout will prevent the anchorage from developing additional capacity if the load increases above the initial lock-off load.The load-carrying capacity of an anchorage depends on several factors. Most important are: initial applied load, anchorage geometry, friction between wedge-anchorage-strand and condition of the contact surfaces.The ADSC Anchored Earth Retention Committee considers that the industry should know how wedges behave once the permanent strand anchors are stressed and grouted inside the transition pipe, between wedges and inside the grout cap."

There were no important changes in the producing situation in Colombia in 1930, because the emergency bill passed by the Colombian Congress in 1927 is still in effect, and therefore no change has taken place in the law governing petroleum. At the close of 1930 the Colombian Congress began to consider a new petroleum bill. This measure is an improvement on the preceding bills which had been the subject of so much debate in the Congress. However, it cannot by any means be regarded as perfect, and a number of criticisms may be justly leveled at it. The most substantial one probably is that the royalties on public lands, and the taxes on private lands, while apparently low, are deliverable at seaboard, or payable based on seaboard price at the option of the government. If the government exercises its option to take the oil at the mouth of the well, the cost of the transportation figured back into oil is also deliverable to the government. This phase of the law has the effect of making seemingly low royalties a burden on the operator. The fact that taxes on private properties are deliverable in kind is also an unusual provision for which there is no good precedent. The pipe line provisions are also noteworthy, and the government has authority to fix rates and also to deny permits to construct pipe lines for reasons affecting national economy. There are also clauses enforcing unit operation on both public and private lands, and collecting a tax of 1 c. per 1000 ft. of gas wasted. It remains to be seen whether this bill will be enacted, or whether it will be substantially modified. This much may be said, however, that unless it is modified, it will defeat its own purpose; i. e., promotion of petroleum development in Colombia. In most instances, the preferred mining methods in steeply dipping narrow vein deposits are selective methods such as cut and fill or shrinkage. The main advantage of these methods lies in the higher degree of control over dilution that can be achieved. However, where ore body geometry lends itself to it, high yield bulk methods can also be attractive. Higher productivity (and the associated lower costs) and lower worker exposure are some of the significant advantages that have made such methods so popular. The Lapa gold mine located in North-Western Quebec uses the long hole mining method (with cemented rock fill) very successfully despite challenging ground conditions. This paper focuses on the experience of the mine with regards to drilling and blasting practices. Firstly, the reasons that prompted the selection of this mining method at Lapa are examined. Secondly, the challenges that the difficult ground conditions found at Lapa pose to drilling and blasting are discussed. Finally, the results of trials of different drilling and blasting strategies that were performed at the mine are presented with particular emphasis on the lessons learned.

In-pit crushing and conveying of waste has been utilized in the mining industry for over 30 years. In recent years, innovations in crushing, conveying, and particularly waste and leach stacking technology have sparked a renewed interest in continuous haulage systems for large-scale open pit applications. A review of the advantages/disadvantages and operating techniques of crushers, feeders, conveyors, and stacking systems currently available is made. The paper examines some operations that are currently using large scale continuous haulage systems. Finally, a case study is presented that evaluates the application of a continuous waste haulage system in a large open pit mine in the Western United States, The case study includes a economic comparison with the existing truck haulage system.

"This paper provides an assessment of the current challenges in strategic mine planning and design and suggested approaches for addressing them. The specific challenges covered are: realistic quantification of downstream processes applied to orebody models to provide an integrated approach to mine design and optimisation modelling, estimation and simulation of geometallurgical variables and their integration into resource and reserve estimation and mine planning modelling, estimation and simulation of new variables for new forms of mining – deep mining, particularly block caving, and solution mining flexibility in planning and design to manage risk and minimise its impact information technology (IT) infrastructure and platforms for rapid online data collection, storage, access and processing.Most of these challenges require new types of data, variables, modelling and estimation methods. Foremost among the new types of variables and data are geometallurgical and dynamic rock mass characterisation variables. There are several well-known, extensively researched and tested methods of suppressing a coalmine methane and coal dust explosion. The choice of method used is dependent on the legislative requirements of each country, which in turn are influenced by mining conditions in that jurisdiction. For example, seam gas content and the dustiness of the coal will combine to create the hazard, while the physical and chemical properties of the seam might influence the possibility of ignition sources such as frictional ignitions. The mining method and layout will also influence the choice of preventative or proactive suppression devices. The decision as to which method is approved and adopted should be based on currently tested and available technology and the latest research outcomes, and should be subjected to a rigorous risk assessment, since a methane explosion propagating into a coal dust explosion cannot be countenanced.Every new technology must undergo stringent tests and these tests must be certified by accredited research facilities or laboratories. Upon approval, an explosion suppression system or the critical components of such a system should be tested in a more realistic environment. This environment can ideally be found in an operating underground mining section for evaluation purposes. Based on the insight gathered in such an environment, a realistic evaluation of the effectiveness of a potential system can be carried out. The explosion suppression system described in this paper has been tested on numerous occasions at accredited test facilities. The technology described in this paper has been used in various applications in underground coalmines and has been adapted to fulfil and exceed the requirements set out for methods currently in use. Introduction Lyon, with 1.1 million inhabitants, is the third largest city in France after Paris and Marseille. It is a lively industrial centre. Lyon lies at the intersection of many transport routes and at the fluence of Rhone and Saone. Like all large cities, Lyon is attempting to alleviate inner city traffic problems by constructing a metro. Metro construction in Lyon began with tunnels built by cut and cover methods along the streets. Deep diaphram walls, which were back anchored and toed into imperveous strata, formed the excavation walls. It is a very economic and simple method. However during the construction period, it has the disavantage of strangling urban life for several years. It is therefore increasingly being replaced by subsurface tunnelling methods. As it was decided to build the metro tunnel between the Guillotiere and St. Jean stations, and thus cross under the Rhone and Saone, the client, Semaly, put the contract out for a competitive tender in which the general parameters were defined. Line, level and construction method were left to the contractor. There was an extensive examination of the tenders, during which reference projects from competitors in Japan were visited, as well as in Germany. Finally the consortium of Dragages, Campenon Bernard, Colas and Hochtief was awarded the contract to drive this tunnel section with an hydro-shield and an extruded steel fibre concrete lining, a Hochtief design.

Petroleum coke is becoming an increasingly important source of light hydrocarbon products as product crudes become heavier and of poorer quality. The use of petroleum coke to generate synthesis gas results in the formation of residual slags that are enriched in silica, alumina, sulfides, oxides, and free metals. The characterization of these slags and their con? stituent phases is an essential step in considering the ultimate use or disposal of such slags and in understanding how to alter the properties of the slags to optimize the efficiency of gasifiers. Depending upon temperatures and bulk compositions, quenched slags typically consist of silicate glasses, calcium silicates, iron-nickel oxide-sulfide masses, aluminate spinels and free metals. Whereas the glasses contain relatively uniformly dispersed metals and sulfur, the iron-nickel oxide-sulfide masses highly concentrate nickel and sulfur. The aluminate spinels very effectively concentrate vanadium and chromium, thus depleting glasses or other adjacent phases. Renewed interest in olivine refractories has led to efforts to characterize them employing modern techniques of experimentation and data analysis. Initial studies have focused on determination of physical and thermophysical properties. Special equipment for the determination of thermal shock resistance and creep behavior have been constructed. Optimal compositions for maximizing various properties are being identified using appropriate statistical techniques. The overall goal is to develop response surfaces for each of a selected group of engineering design and use properties. Development of ?olivine Refractories? in the United States The term "olivine refractories" is used here because it does appear that domestic deposits of this rock will be the focus of renewed interest and "olivinell is the preferred term in this country. There are extensive deposits of high quality olivines extending through parts of Georgia. North Carolina and in the state of Washington. The eastern olivines are much more localized and extensively altered compared to the western materials. The Washington olivines exist as massive rock deposits in the Twin Sisters mountain area northeast of Seattle and their inaccessi-bility has slowed efforts to develop them. The North Carolina olivines have been used in steel plant applications since the 1930's. Geologists use the term "olivine" to describe assemblages of ortho-silicates. 2RO.SiO2, wherein the RO may be MgO. FeO. MnO. etc. When the RO consists essentlally of MgO and FeO. the material is called dunite and. as such, is synonymous with "refractory olivine." Refractory olivines utilizing North Carolina materials were developed for brick products by Birch and Harvey in this country around the mid-1930's. (I) Their work was completely independent of that of V. M. Goldschmidt and co-workers who used massive dunites located in Denmark. The inter-relationship between these parties and the effect on the outcome of the project is often grossly underestimated. There are numerous success stories where the parties have worked as complementary teams aiming at the best outcome for the client company and achieving significant success. While there are a good number of occurrences where either the roles of the parties were unclear or perceived to be different from what others in the team believed or required them to be and the results were less than desired. This usually resulted in ongoing conflict, incorrect focus, working to different agendas and the result being a less than optimum result to Client Company. Mining, by its very nature of exploring where you cannot see, be it a shaft being sunk, tunnel being developed or other excavation that needs to be made, requires a very special working relationship between the parties. To understand this, and it applies equally well to mine and plant construction and other multiple function projects, one needs to start by describing the relationship of the parties. Often people believe that because they manage ongoing complex operations and large numbers of people that they can manage projects and as such the participants will ?fall into line.? At the outset it needs to be stressed that ?Project Management? is a specific type of management and needs to be understood as such. There are enough Colleges and Universities that teach project management, not only as a subject but also as a Master Degree. As you start up your project the relationship you establish between the client, project team (C.P.T) and the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management team (EPCM) will largely determine how successful your project will be. It is essential that from the outset a spirit of co-operation, support and respect be nurtured, and that it be actively carried through the project life cycle. There are several methods to facilitate this including team building exercises right at the start. This time and money will be well spent and recouped many times over during the project life cycle.

The properties of activated carbon which are important for gold recovery applications include activity, capacity, wear resistance, particle size distribution and bulk density. There are experimental difficulties in attempting to simulate the plant environment in the laboratory in order to measure the above properties. However, standard tests can be set up to compare the characteristics of different carbons and to assist in monitoring the performance of carbon in CIP operations. These laboratory tests are critically evaluated and data are presented on the performance of carbon from a number of CIP plants.

The process of hydraulic transport through pipelines, worldwide well known for the transport of fine-grain solids is also being used to a greater extent in mining for the handling of primarily coarse-grain solid û water mixtures for the removal of, for instance û coal and waste mixtures after coal winning using hydraulic monitors, tailings for backfilling underground and washer tailings and flotation waste to the dump. A large-scale test unit was taken into service at the Bergbauforschung GmbH (Mining Research Company) in Essen-Kray, GFR, to further improve this technology. The unit was planned and built by Krupp Industrie- und Stahlbau of Duisburg in cooperation with Bergbauforschung GmbH. The paper deals in detail with the demands made on this test unit and the technical results obtained on it and with the planned experimental research work.

Australian regulatory control of ground vibration and airblast arising from mining, quarrying and civil construction operations is spread across a number of federal, state and local authorities and across a number of departments with various jurisdictions. The Australian Standard AS 2187.2 contains an informative appendix on damage-related criteria and it is the primary reference for the regulators. The complete standard and the informative appendix is currently undergoing major revision with a focus for the latter on implementing frequency-dependent criteria for ground vibration. Certain directions for change have been raised for consideration by the standing committee, ranging from fundamental issues of measurement and interpretation and others that overlap human comfort criteria. It is anticipated that some of the suggestions will eventually make their way into future standards after an adequate period of consultation and consideration by both the Australian public and others involved in the associated industries.
