I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [Ir(1) I > Za/2 N1/2] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [p (h) = T 1ih , h>1 ,] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. [T veß], in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semivariogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. This is the seventh in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1.935-36.3/ The present report covering 1,87 samples represents the products of 83 companies plus those from the Pacific coast, which were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. For the regular grade 985 samples consisting of 73 different brands are averaged. The premium grade consists of 489 samples of 40 different brands. The third grade has 401 samples averaged from 51 different brands. In this report the districts have been reduced to 21 by combining North and South Texas into one district. El Paso samples are reported with the South Rocky Mountain district, and. Amarillo, Tex., has teen included with the Middle Rocker Mountain district. In the present survey samples from Fort Smith, Ark., have been included in the Tulsa area, Indianapolis has been included in the St. Louis district. Cleveland represents the State of Ohio. Samples from Little Rock, Ark., and North Carolina have been included in the Memphis district. The Pittsburgh district includes samples only from this State and Wheeling, W. Va. The actual sampling points in each area are indicated on table 1.

The Morobe Goldfield in Papua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23t) and Edie Creek (40 and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (780, Kerimenge (360 and Hamata (30t). Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.

"INTRODUCTION Contrary to popular belief, Arizona State Trust land is not public land. All uses of the land must benefit the Trust, a fact that is considered with the review of each application received for sale, lease, or permit. This includes applications for activities ranging from commercial development to recreation. In 1863, the Territory of Arizona was established by an act of Congress. This act reserved sections 16 and 36 in each township to be held in trust for the benefit of the common schools. Later, the Enabling Act of 1910 allowed the Territory of Arizona to prepare for statehood. This act reserved the additional sections 2 and 32 of each township for the common schools and granted another 2,350,000 acres to be held in trust for other beneficiaries. In all, Congress granted the State of Arizona almost 11 million acres. The State was to manage those lands and maximize revenue for 13 separate beneficiaries. To meet this mandate, the State established the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) in 1915. During fiscal year 2015, the ASLD contributed $136 million to the permanent fund, bringing the total value to over $5.1 billion, through the sale and leasing of the land and natural products which includes minerals. The current inventory of State Trust lands includes 9.2 million acres representing about 12.7% of the State.The ASLD Minerals Section manages the exploration, development, and leasing of mineral products on State Trust land. We are not a regulatory agency, but a department guided by our fiduciary responsibilities to the Trust. Our mineral programs include: Exploration Permits, Mineral Leases, Mineral Material Leases, Geothermal Leases, Oil & Gas Leases, and Special Land Use Permits. This paper reviews the development and suitability of various important thermophysical and electrical properties with respect to base metal mattes. Areas of focus include the critical validation of measurements of viscosity, density, surface and interfacial tension, electrical conductivity, and an overview of the various experimental methods used to determine these properties. Accurate physical property data of mattes are critical in process modelling and computational fluid dynamic modelling of smelting and converting operations employed in the extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals.

Estos parámetros pueden ser utilizados como guías de exploración, ya que son anomalías desde el punto de vista litogeoquímico. En caso no haya mineralización visible (depósitos ocultos), el empleo de estos trazadores en unidades ígneas (diques, cuerpos subvolcánicos e intrusivos) puede señalar la probabilidad de encontrar depósitos en profundidad.

There have been some problems associated with hot coal, defined as oxidizing coal heating toward ignition temperature, in shipments from the US to overseas markets. This paper will provide, first, a brief review, together with a selective bibliography. Second, a thorough discussion of coal oxidation is covered. Third, potential effects of storage are presented and, lastly, methods are suggested for the safe storage and bulk transfer of coal. The scope includes coal storage for power plants.

A procedure for designing an optimum pit to yield maximum profit is described. The volume in which a possible pit is considered is divided into discrete blocks, each of which is assigned an economic value equivalent to its worth as a block of mineable material. The profitability of a pit can then be generated by summing the blocks within the pit. The optimizing procedure starts at the surface level and proceeds downwards level by level, to obtain the optimum pit at each level. The method makes use of the fact that an optimum pit at a particular level must be completely contained in any optimum pit at a lower level. Procedures for generating block costs, and pits with various slope angles under the restriction of complete block removal are considered briefly. The main description is of the theory of the method and the computer program based on this. The method is applicable to any type of mineral deposit, the only requirement being that the orebody should be represented accurately by a block model.

The mechanisms and functions of yield pillar are analyzed by employing finite element method that takes time dependent and plastic failure of rock into consideration. The design criteria for different geological conditions are discussed. The results provide further evidences that yield pillar design will improve floor or roof condition, especially when the floor and/or roof strata are weaker than the coal. Based on this study, the yield pillar size is determined for one cod1 mine located in southern West Virginia.

Modelling the geometry of a vein is a crucial step in resources estimation. The resulting models are used as mineralization domain boundaries and have a direct impact on the tonnage of estimated resources. Deterministic models are often built using time consuming wireframing techniques usually based on hand interpretation of the drillhole intercepts. Another approach consists in coding the drillhole samples by a function of their distance to the veins contacts. The coding is subsequently used for modelling the vein contacts away from drillholes. This is a more efficient approach and is able to provide a measure of tonnage uncertainty. The use of location-dependent variograms improves the modelling by incorporating local changes in the anisotropy of the vein structure. This combined approach results in more realistic vein models, particularly when the geometry of the vein has been are altered by folding, shearing and other structural processes. The approach is illustrated on a realistic case study.

In New Zealand, platinum group metals (PGM) occur in three main geological environments of economic interest: layered mafic igneous complexes, the Dun Mountain Ophiolite Belt, and in association with placer gold deposits. Most of the layered mafic complexes with PGM potential occur in the Median Batholith. These include the Longwood (Permian), Bluff (Permian), Riwaka (Devonian) and Rotoroa (Jurassic) igneous complexes. Exploration of the Longwood Complex discovered PGM associated with gabbroic rocks. Best assays to date include a 1 m drill intersection of 1 g/t Pt + Pd and float rock with 3.0 ppm Pt and 3.3 ppm Pd. The Greenhills complex at Bluff consists of basal dunite overlain by wehrlite and gabbro. PGM occur with chrome spinel in the basal dunite and Pt geochemical anomalies have been identified associated with the wehrlite-gabbro contact zone. The Greenhills complex has some similarities to Alaskan-Ural type complexes.Reconnaissance exploration in the Dun Mountain Ophiolite Belt has identified PGM geochemical anomalies, but no follow-up work has been carried out. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, PGM were recovered as a byproduct of placer gold mining in Southland. Placer gold prospects with PGM potential include the Waiau River, deposits flanking the Longwood Complex and some Southland beaches.

Throughout the 1970s, the US Bureau of Mines rode an ebb tide in Washington political circles. In rapid fire succession, the agency lost its mine health and safety enforcement responsibility (1973), a large portion of its energy research responsibility (1975), and then its fuel statistics functions plus a sizable portion of its coal R&D (1977). By 1978, johnny-come-latelies in the Energy, Labor, and Interior Departments had siphoned away from the Bureau some $125 million in program responsibilities as well as 900 of its employees. The bruising decade came to a close with a Department of Natural Resources proposal that, in its original form, would have scattered the Bureau's responsibilities to the winds. "There is no doubt in my wind," said Lindsay Norman, acting director of the Bureau of Mines (see box), "that were the Bureau to continue down the path it was on, the next step was closing the doors and going out of business." The doors are still open, but erosion of responsibilities had a devastating effect on the resources available to fulfill the Bureau's mission. Devastating, too, in terms of internal morale, considering the Bureau had six directors in a 10-year span. "When the troops are in the trenches and are being shot at," Norman said, "they need a leader-hopefully, a permanent one- that can get them advancing. This is something the Bureau did not consistently have in the 1970s." In September 1978, Roger Markle climbed aboard as director of the Bureau to rejuvenate the 70-year-old agency. He resigned only six months later* but the program Markle set in motion is being carried through by Lindsay Norman. Since Norman's appointment as acting director, he has spent considerable time on the road explaining his agency's redefined goals. At one such stop in Duluth, Norman and his two deputy directors, Charles Kenahan and Mike Kaas, answered the following questions. Lindsay, you were the principal architect in the Bureau's 1979 reorganization. How about a glimpse of what that entailed? Toward the end of the 1970s, after almost a decade of steady dismemberment, we reached what we felt was a critical point in the Bureau's history-we had the choice of redefining and strengthening our organization to meet the mineral challenges ahead, or continuing down the path toward the agency's eventual demise. We felt the Bureau's mission too important to abandon, so in 1978 with Roger Markle as director we initiated a six-month, no-holds-barred intro spection of just what the Bureau should be doing, why, and toward what ultimate national needs. And what did this self-reflection reveal? That there is, indeed, a unique federal role for the Bureau of Mines-that of a lead agency for influencing mineral decisions and pioneering tomorrow's technologic advances. Don't confuse us with policymakers, we're not. But we are policy analysts; we're scientists, engineers, and mineral professionals who can offer a sorely needed source of objective, accurate information to decision makers in both the public and private sectors. I feel there is no better brain trust in government than the Bureau when it comes to mineral expertise-of course, I'm biased. Do I understand you to say the Bureau of Mines is an advocate agency for the minerals industry? We plead no parochial interests, nor ought we, but from our viewpoint a sound minerals industry is extremely important to the broader national goals of security and a healthy economy. US dependence on foreign sources for critical minerals, the increasing noncompetitiveness of some US mineral sectors, and the array of land use issues surrounding mineral-rich lands all have much more serious implications than many otherwise informed people seem to recognize. X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a nondestructive imaging technique, and its efficiency is widely recognized. In the present paper, X-ray CT is successfully applied for the visualization of water permeation process in rock. A new experimental technique using a tracer, which mainly consists of Potassium Iodide (KI), is proposed, together with the analysis method of the velocity field. The permeation process and the velocity field in rock are concretely visualized and analyzed by considering the conservation of mass of the tracers. La tomographie calculée aux rayons X est une technique de la prise d'images non-destructive et son efficacité est largement reconnue. Dans le présent exposé, la tomographie calculée aux rayons X Radio est appliquée avec succès à la visualisation du procédé de perméation de l'eau dans la roche. Une nouvelle technique expérimentale, se servant d'un identificateur principalement constitué d'iodure de potassium (KI), est proposée avec la méthode de l'analyse du champ des vitesse. Le procédé de perméation et le champ des vitesse dans la roche sont visualisés concrètement et analysés en considérant la conservation de masse des identificateurs. Röntgen-Computer-Tomografie (CT) ist eine nicht-destruktive Bildverarbeitungstechnik, deren Effizienz weit anerkannt ist. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird Röntgen-CT erfolgreich für die visuelle Darstellung des Wasser-Durchdringungsvorgangs im Fels eingesetzt. Eine neue experimentelle Technit mit einem Tracer, der hauptsächlich aus Kaliumiodid (KI) besteht, wird vorgeschlagen, zusammen mit der Analysemethode des Geschwindigkeitsfelds. Der Durchdringungsprozess und das Geschwindigkeitsfeld im Fels werden konkret visualisiert und analysiert, wobei die Bewahrung der Masse des Tracers berücksichtigt wird.

The DeLamar Silver Mine is a Joint Venture between Earth Resources Company, the Canadian Superior Mining Company and the Superior Oil Company. The property is a consolidation of several old operations in the district. The more widely known are the DeLamar and Sommercamp Mines. The location is 20 miles northeast of Jordan Valley, Oregon and 55 miles southwest of Boise, Idaho. The mine is on the south slope of DeLamar Mountain in the Owyhee Mountains of southwest Idaho Initial interest started in 1969 with serious exploration beginning in 1970. The feasibility study was completed in 1974, and in 1975 Mountain States Engineers were retained to design and build the plant. Processing of ore began in March of 1977 with the first bullion poured in April of that year. The plant is currently processing some 2200 TPD of ore with a grade of four ounces of silver and 0.03 oz. of gold per ton of ore. Cyanide consumption is 2.5 lb/ton, zinc consumption of 0.3 lb/ton and flocculent consumption of 0.5 lb/ton. A flowsheet is shown as Figure I. The grinding circuit is of two stage design. The primary mill is an 18 ft. dia. by 9 ft. long semi-autogenous unit. The secondary mill is a 9 1/2 ft. dia. by 15 ft. long overflow ball mill. The mill discharges are combined and sent to 15 in. cyclones for classification. Cyclone overflow reports to leaching with the underflows reporting to the ball mill. The cyclone feed pump is an 8X6 metal case pump. The primary mill has 1000 installed horsepower and rotates at 68% of critical speed. The ball mill has 700 installed horsepower and rotates at 72% of critical speed. Because the primary mill is horsepower limited the ball charge is varied to maintain the desired throughput. The mill power is held at 980-990 HP by modifying the feed rate. Four inch forged steel balls are added any time the ore feed fails to reach 100 tons per hour for four hours. During periods of extremely hard ore, the ball charge has been as high as 14 v/o and at other times the mill has operated fully autogenous for weeks.

In the Spring of 1991, Georgia Marble Company of Arizona (GMCOA), acquired the Andrada Marble Company located near Vail, Arizona, approximately 32 km southeast of Tucson. The Georgia Marble Company operation consists of an open pit quarry and a recently constructed, state of the art calcium carbonate milling and processing facility. The open pit quarry exposes white, crystalline, CaCO3, Escabrosa limestone that meets our customer criteria for Consumer and Industrial Filler applications. The Georgia Marble Company Arizona Division facility is designed and engineered to produce a wide range of milled calcium carbonate that includes finely ground and coarse screened products.

Coal quality control system at all levels (coal face to regional levels) is also discussed briefly hereunder, since coal quality is one of the major factor for environmental management. An integrated coal mining economic and environmental management super-system is presented in this paper Review Of the UN/DTCD, UNDP European Regional project "Computerized Coal Mining Systems" is presented here. Conceptualization of a new European Regional project on Coal Mining Environment and Economic Management is also a topic discussed in the paper.

The Boston and Colorado Smelting Works are situated in the town of Black Hawk, Gilpin County, Colorado, on the Clear Creek Narrow Gauge Railway, 55 miles from Denver, in the Rocky Mountains, at an altitude of 7800 feet. It was one of the first works erected for the metallurgical treatment of gold ores, and the only one established in Colorado on a large scale which has been uniformly successful. Both gold and silver ores are treated, and gold, silver, and copper produced. The lead is not separated from the ores nor paid for, if it exists, and is entirely lost in the residues. The works were planned and built by Professor Hill, formerly Professor of Chemistry in Brown University, Providence, R. I., and is still managed by him, assisted by Mr. Richard Pearce, formerly professor in the School of Mines at Truro, England. They are very advantageously situated with regard to the ore-producing regions, having Boulder County on the north, which produces, besides ordinary gold ores, a series of tellurium minerals, such as altaite, sylvanite, and hessite, which are very rich in gold and silver. They are associated with copper and iron pyrites, blende, galena, and the carbonate and oxides of iron. Gilpin County itself produces for the most part the pyrites of iron and copper rich in gold, with a small quantity of galena and blende, which is rich in silver. In

One criterion central to most definitions of reclamation is the restoration of mined lands to their original productive potential. This is often difficult to achieve on mined lands in the Northern Great Plains because of the rigorous climate (Bares 19;2) and various soil related problems including sodicity, salinity, soil permeability, low organic matter and plant nutrient deficiencies (Malakondaiah and Safaya 1982). Field study sites were established on recontotured mined areas during the early 1970's (prior to the topsoil mandate) in which several amendments were tested for their ability to improve spoil/topsoil conditions and, hence, increase plant production. Physical and chemical properties of these control (untreated) and amended spoils and topsoils have been summarized (Safaya et al. 1982). A number of grass and legume species combinations were studied. The general effects of one time (prior to seeding), single rate (approximately 100 mT ha-1) application of leonardite and/or slack coal to spoils and topsoils was the reduction of grass dry matter yields (NB 1 test site: dry matter yield (DMY) without slack was 110 g m 2 yr I ; DMY with slack was 80 g m -2 yr 1 I and the promotion of legume establishment and yield (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 13 g m 2 yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 93 g m 2 yr 1). On South Beulah topsoil, treated with leonardite, production of weedy species was remarkably lower than that without leonardite (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 252 g m - yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 177 g m 2 yr 1). The general effect of commercial fertilizer applied one time prior to seeding (rates ranging from 9-13-0 to 44-1 12-28 kg ha-1 of N-P-K) was to increase plant production during the first two to three years after which the effect disappeared. This effect was much more pronounced on spoils (NB I test site: DMY on spoils without fertilizer was 53 g m -2 yr -1; DMY on spoils with fertiliser was 132 gm -2 yr -1). Weedy species accounted for most of the biomas, production during the first growing season. Three of the test sites were designed to study plant production on topsoils and spoils. Establishment and production of grass species were comparatively better on topsoils (30 cm in depth) than on spoils while legumes were most successful on the soils (Center test site, 1979; DMY of grasses on topsoil was 170 g m 2 yr -1 DMY of grasses on spoils was 52 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on topsoil was 20 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on spoil was 191 g m 2 yr -1). Total plant production on topsoiled (302 m thickness) plots at the South Beulah site (DMY in 1979 of 269 g m 2 yr 1) was comparable to that of native western wheatgrass prairie (DMY of 262 g m -2 yr -1). An experiment was conducted to find out if time of planting would have any effect on establishment of grasses on spoils. It was fund that late fall seeding was superior to spring planting for establishment of wheatgrasses at NB 3 test site (Control Plot, 1975: DMY on spring-seeded was 1 g m -2 yr - 1; DMY on fall-seeded was 55 g m -2 yr -1). In general, wheatgrasses (slender, streambank, thickspike and western) yielded the most aboveground biomass of all the grass species tested; yellow sweetclover was the most successful legume. Yellow sweetclover established and was productive on both spoils and topsoils but only where competition with grasses was apparently minimal. Durar hard fescue established and thrived on topsoil but dry matter production was low compared to that of wheatgrasses. Emerald crown-vetch demonstrated a potential for growth on spoils where water conditions were adequate, whereas side-oats grama, prairie sand-reed, alkali sacaton, and bird's -foot trefoil demonstrated only sporadic success. Little bluestem did not become established at any of the test sites. Peak production of the planted species, especially grasses, was generally reached by the second week of July. Legume and weed production continued to increase into late August.

The mining industry continues to experience a skills shortage and this is having an impact on the ability of mining companies to operate sustainably. Apart from a few exceptions, there is a dearth of geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists as well as environmental scientists and other professionals in the global mining industry. This relates to both quantity and quality. It makes good business sense for mining companies to employ local professionals rather than expensive expatriate staff. In some cases a mining company could employ more than 10 local mining engineers for the cost of one expatriate. However, in many countries local professionals are not always equipped professionally to work on mine sites. The result is that many companies are not operated optimally due to human resources gaps. In some cases, particularly in key areas such as mine planning, this threatens the sustainability of the operation or at the very least results in sub-optimal resource utilisation. This paper briefly presents some of the issues and strategies being implemented and that might be implemented to maintain a sustainable supply of quality minerals graduates to the industry in 2011 and beyond.
