A field study was conducted to evaluate seat designs on shuttle cars. Eight operators participated in evaluating seat designs on the basis of perceived levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and discomfort. Researchers also measured the levels of vehicle jarring/jolting. Four basic seat designs were compared on low and mid-coal seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines. Two seats were currently used on the shuttle cars and another two were NIOSH designs. Objective data were collected using accelerometers with pre-amplifiers and filters connected to a data recorder; whereas subjective data were gathered with a visual analog scale (VAS) and a questionnaire. Results from measured levels of jarring/jolting showed that the NIOSH Seat L2A smoothed out bumps better than any other seats. Using the VAS, mid-seam and low-seam shuttle car operators rated the levels of jarring/jolting and discomfort lower with the NIOSH seat than the other seats. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable. This research will provide the industry with better seat designs for isolating jarring/jolting in vehicles. Furthermore, researchers plan to improve the NIOSH seats using information gathered in this study.

In this article an experimental study of axial bearing capacity of half-closed steel pipe pile installed at BKSH dock is presented. In comparison with open and closed end piles, half-closed end pile is considered to have high bearing capacity and good penetration, that is, it not only has a capacity as twice as the same size open end steel pipe pile, but also has blow counts as half as the same size closed end steel pipe pile. It is economic to use half-closed end pile in soft ground without a deep deposit of thick stiff clay. This article also describes a large scale model pile test and preliminarily analyses mechanism of improvement of bearing capacity of half-closed end pile with emphasis on effect of squeezed soil on side friction; an empirical approach is presented in which side friction is related to density of squeezed soil and which is useful for reasonably chosing side friction of different types of piles in design of foundarion.

"Currently, large amounts of wastewater containing boron are discharged from industries like coal-fired power plants. Although coagulation-sedimentation is widely employed for their treatment, only a little consideration has been given to its mechanism. An additional problem is that the produced sludge has poor solid-liquid separation. This study is focusing on coagulation-sedimentation using magnesium, examining the mechanism and improving the solid-liquid separation. First, the co-precipitation with magnesium hydroxide was conducted against high-concentration boron wastewater with 500 mg/dm3as B. Second, in order to improve the solid-liquid separation by maintaining high reactivity, low-crystalline magnesium oxide was synthesized from magnesium carbonate by calcination at 400–700°C. It was tested as an adsorbent of boron and compared to co-precipitation with magnesium hydroxide. Co-precipitation showed high removal capacity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the sludge revealed the presence of other compounds besides magnesium hydroxide. This result suggests that other processes play a role other than simple adsorption on to magnesium hydroxide, and provides a plausible explanation for the observed high separability. As for the adsorption, the synthesized magnesium oxide immobilized as much or more amount of boron than co-precipitation. Furthermore, the results of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) suggested the residual magnesium carbonate improved solid-liquid separability due to its poor solubility.INTRODUCTIONBoron is used in various industrial applications. In glass industry, the addition of a little amount of boron into glass products can enhance heat-resistance and chemical-resistance. Semi-conductor industry also employs boron as dopant for silicon. From these industries, large amounts of wastewater containing boron have been discharged. Additionally, coal-fired power plants have been recently discharging highly concentrated boron wastewater because the amount of boron contained in coal has been increasing due to a gradual decrease of the quality of coal. Since boron is partially proved to be toxic for animals, plants, and human beings (WHO, 1998),the guideline of the World Health Organization limit the boron concentration in drinking water to 2.4 mg/dm3(WHO, 2009).Because boron does not precipitate from solutions by simply changing the pH, the removal could be carried by operations such as adsorption or ion exchange. However, since ion exchange is an expensive operation with relatively low capacity, it is not suitable to treat the large amounts of wastewater produced by heavy industries like the coal-fired power plants. Therefore, coagulation-sedimentation method is still widely used as a suitable alternative way."

The purpose of this paper is to tell a story - and it is a story with a moral. My topic is Present Trends in the Tax Environment Affecting Mineral Development in Canada, and the first thing to recognize is that, with depressed metal prices and weakening western economies, taxes, in and of themselves, are not really the cause of the Canadian mining industry's present doldrums. But the character and level of mining taxes in Canada has had a profound influence on the development of the industry over the past decade, and the expectations of what taxes the industry will face in future years will influence the industry's further growth. My theme today is that, in Canada, our tax system has, in the past, served as a negative and destabilizing influence in the mining industry: it has contributed to a major short-fall in investment commitments and hence in the contribution which the mining industry can make to the Canadian economy, and the adverse effect on the industry of previous high tax rates was made far worse by the confusing, contradictory and perverse nature of the tax system itself. This is a story with some happy parts in it, and, in fact, governments in Canada did learn, haltingly and grudgingly, that there are limits on the amounts that governments could safely extract from the industry, and that some assurances of long term fiscal stability were necessary if investors were to be induced to make massive commitments which could only be recovered over very lengthy periods.

Since 1990, the entire Romanian mining industry has suffered a major restructuring, i.e. technical and economic. The large majority of the remaining active mines are these with a chance for economic comeback. This is also the case for the mines that belong to MINVEST Deva Company; most of the mines are closed, and are waiting to be reclaimed. The authors present the closing procedures of the former copper mining perimeters managed by MINVEST. It is well known that pollutants of concern for the environment must be monitored to obtain reliable information on the quality of ambient conditions and to minimize their impact on the environment. Consequently, the monitoring problems during the closing procedures will be presented.

The solubilities of oxygen in liquid Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd alloys have been determined in the range of 940° to 1200°C at 1 atm pressure of oxygen using an improved Sieverts technique. The additions of gold (0 to 57 pct), platinum (0 to 27 pct), and palladium (0 to 22 pct) to liquid silver continuously decrease the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. Activity coefficients and interaction coefficients of oxygen in these alloys and have been calculated. The contribution of the product, pMxNM, to In yo only becomes significant at high alloy concentrations. RECENTLY several investigators1"3 have redeter-mined the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. In general the recent findings1" for Po, = 1 atm are in good agreement with the equation:4 log %O = 695.4/T + 1.086 [1] It is established1, 2 that the solubility of oxygen follows Sieverts' law reasonably well, at least up to 1 atm partial pressure of oxygen. It should be noted that a very slight deviation from Sieverts' law has been reported by Lupis and Elliott.3 Only recently has the solubility of oxygen in Ag-X binary liquid systems received much attention, and only the Ag-Cu, Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd systems have been studied. Par lee, Sacris, and zoellners reported that the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver increases progressively with the small additions of copper (0 to 0.5 pct) up to the point where the copper oxide phase appears. Lupis and ~lliott~ have reported that the solubilities of oxygen in liquid silver decrease progressively with the additions of gold, platinum, and palladium. However, their investigation was limited to 0 to 5 pct of these alloying elements, a range too limited to satisfy the requirements of the research program of this laboratory, where the solubilities of oxygen in the range of 0 to 30 pct were required for the calculation of chemical diffusion coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The present paper deals only with the solubilities of oxygen in these alloys while another paper will deal with the diffusion of oxygen in these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A Sieverts technique was employed which involved an improved design of the reaction tube, Fig. 1, as described briefly in a previous communication.4 Liquid melts (70 to 100 g) were held in Norton Alun-dum crucibles. The induction furnace used had a maximum output of 2.5 kw with very fine control. This induction system had excellent stability and the final equilibrium temperatures measured by calibrated Pt-Pt, 10 pct Rh thermocouples are believed to be within ±2C. These thermocouples were checked against the melting point of pure gold wire, and the results agreed with standard tables (±l°C). Each run involved a careful sequence of operations. The sample was heated to and held at about 900°C in vacuum for 3 to 4 hr with the thermocouple in a retracted position. After melting, the melts were usually exposed to a small amount of oxygen (0.5 to 2.0 cu cm) and then degassed slowly for 1 to 2 min to remove any oxidizable volatile impurities such as carbon and sulfur as CO, CO2, SO2, and SO forth. THE importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.1 It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Bessemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstätten figures.4 Osmond5 observed structures in a steel ingot analogous to those found in meteorites. The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. The productivity and safety of Indian longwall operations are insignificant because of complex geomechanical conditions. Therefore, the continuous monitoring and forecasting of abnormalities is imperative. Authors developed an innovative real time system and implemented in one of the Indian longwall mines. The real time system was successfully acquired data from underground chock shields and classified the behaviour in real time as per the standard norms. Furthermore, it forecasted the abnormal behaviour of chock shields promptly. The management was implemented appropriate precautionary measures based on real time forecast. Subsequently, the longwall operations were successfully completed with enhanced productivity and safety. This paper discuss the impact of the innovative system on productivity of experimental longwall mine.

An intensive study was started in 1968 to determine the most economical process for winning nickel and cobalt from an extensive de- posit of complex, low grade nickel-cobalt ore (1.6% Ni, 0.10% CO) designated "the Greenvale ore." In 1974 the commercial plant at Yabulu, in Queensland, Australia, began processing the ore. In the interim, a great deal of laboratory and pilot-plant effort was applied to develop technical, process and commercial design data to demonstrate to potential financial backers and customers that a full-scale plant was feasible. The laboratory test work, pilot plant facilities and pro- gram are briefly reviewed in this paper.

"Abstract: In this work, low temperature carbothermic reduction of Panzhihua low grade ilmenite after ball milling were investigated. The ball milling of ilmenite and graphite were processed in a ball mill. The milling process can attenuate the particle of ilmenite, and the ilmenite characteristic peak were broadened and weakened. The reduction temperature and behaviors are studied on the thermo gravimetric apparatus; lower temperature and higher reaction rate were obtained for the reduction of ilmenite with graphite after milled. The reduction temperature and times of ilmenite decreased to 1000-1025°C and 40-60min via milled for 4 or 8h; Low down the reduction temperature can eliminate the solution of Mg2+ and FeTi03 in a certain degree; the reduced ilmenite has an obvious loose structure, can favored the subsequent procedure such as leaching.1 IntroductionThere is about 9.66 billion tons of Vanadic Titan-magnetite deposited in Panzhihua, China. In this reserve, there is about 8.73x108 t ofTi02, Accounting for 90.54% of the Chinese reserves, and 35.17% of the international reserves and ranking first in the world. [JJ Titanium mineral deposits major classified into Rock type and Placer type. Rock type is the igneous mineral, which have great content of FeO (Relative to Fe20 3) and gangue. The rock textures are compact and almost are complex ore. Rock type Titanium mineral major are ilmenite and titan magnetite ore, difficult to separate the metal ore and gangue. l.21 Thus, the Ti02 grade of Rock type ilmenite much lower than the Placer type (Table land 11). Panzhihua ilmenite are the typical Rock-type, due to the higher contents of MgO, CaO and Si02 and the complex mineralogy in ilmenite in Panzhihua region, making its direct reduction progressively more difficult. Mechanical activation, usually carried out by energetic milling or ball milling, was reported to significantly decreased the reduction temperature and accelerate the reaction rate of reduction of ilmenite with carbon, silicon and Magnesium. f3·(>J It reported that the process temperature were decreased to 600-1000°C and the annealing time were reduced to 30-120min after milled for 50-400 h. A quantitative chemical model of the rocks of the Broken Hill lode environment is presented to illustrate a stratiform orebody in a meaningful form to scientists interested in environmental control on the chemicalcomposition of sediments.Even though this study was restricted by the narrow range of rock analyses available it is obvious that significant chemical differences exist between the various rock units and also that some association of metallic sulphides with Ca, Mn, Fe, and P is indicated.Correlation of this evidence with that from other mining fields may point out more definite chemical relationships and elucidate the puzzle of the mode of formation of many stratiform orebodies.

"Bluestone Dam in Hinton, W.Va., along the New River, is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Completed in 1949, the dam is 165 ft (50 m) tall, 2,048 ft (624 m) wide, and encompasses a water shed that is 4,600 sq mi (11,914 sq km). The Bluestone Dam Safety Assurance (DSA) Program began in 2001, and is a multiple-phase construction project to upgrade the capacity and stability of the structure to meet the probable maximum flood event. Installing 216 high capacity rock anchors was a major feature of the work.The USACE selected Brayman Construction Corporation to perform Phase 2B of the construction modifications to the Bluestone Dam. Brayman was responsible for installing the high capacity rock anchors, which range in size from 3 to 61 strands and have a design load up to 2,145 kips (9,541 kN). Drill holes range in size from 6.5 to 15 in (16.5 to 38 cm), and required full length corrosion protection. Of the 216 anchors, 57 were installed on top of the dam to resist overturning and the remaining 159 were installed on the face of the dam at a 45-degree angle to resist sliding.To gain access to the face of the dam anchor locations, the project required dirt benches, excavations with temporary shoring, and steel platforms. To access anchors on the east and west abutment faces, the team excavated over 10,000 cu yds (7,645 cu m) of material. Support of these excavations included the design and installation of three soil nail walls with over 145 nails and 3,500 sq ft (325 sq m) of shotcrete. The project also called for a 780 ft (237 m) long steel platform to gain access to the spillway anchors. The Stratus Group designed the platform to support two 85 ton (80 tonne) crawler cranes and as many as five drill rigs that were the equivalent to a design load of 3.5 ton per sq ft (335 kN per sq m). Once the final platform design was approved, fabrication of roughly 3 million lbs (1,360 tonnes) of structural steel began. Brayman’s in-house fabrication shop, in conjunction with Dura-Bond Industries and Advantage Steel, collaborated to fabricate and install the platform in less than five months. Flexibility in the platform design allowed for sections of the platform to be lowered as much as 16 ft (4.9 m) to provide access to anchors at lower elevations along the spillway face. In addition to the main spillway platform, Stratus Group, Brayman, Dura-Bond and Advantage designed, fabricated and installed six other unique platforms to facilitate anchor construction on various areas of the dam."

Four manganese dioxide leaching microorganisms, an Achromobacter spp, Aspergillus niger, Elllerobacter cloacae and Elllerobacter agglomerails were purified from sucrose enriched crude mixed cultures which contained at least sixteen, non-leaching, morphologically different, colony types. Fastest leaching rates were obtained from the original enrichment's mixed cultures (1.26 g Mn++ I/d) while best yields of Mn++ m terms of sugar use came from Achromobacter and A. niger being 0.84 and 0.89 g Mn++/g sucrose respectively. The peak efficiency in manganese reduced, per carbohydrate used, coincided with the exponential growth phase for Achromobacter. The two Elllerobacter species performed better in stationary or senescent growth phases.

This report assesses the expected detectability, on the surface above mines, of electromagnetic signals produced in the frequency band of 630 to 3030 Hz by a rescue transmitter activated by miners trapped underground. This assessment is based on a statistical analysis of experimental signal and noise data taken at a representative sample of coal mine sites well distributed over the United States underground coal fields. Regression analyses are performed to characterize the signal transmission behavior of overburdens as a function of depth and frequency. The predicted signal behavior is then combined with experimentally based distributions of the background noise, and aural detection characteristics of signals in noise, to generate curves of the expected probability of detection for trapped miner signals versus overburden depth and operating frequency. The implications of these results, and associated recommendations, are presented regarding the detectability of trapped miners, sensitivity analyses and confirmatory tests, and operational utilization considerations for the trapped miners and the search and rescue team on the surface.

High purity (99,95) Ni-51 wt pct cr eutectic alloy was unidirectionalty solidified at rates of 0.1 to 8 in. per hr. The resulting material was characterized by large grains, approximately 0.5 mm in cross section and extending through almost the entire length of the specimen, parallel to the growth axis. The eutectic structure of specimens the growth at -1/3 The per hr consisted of a continuous nickel-rich phase and chrome -rich lamellae approximately 2 thick, spaced about apart. Specimens were tested in compression at temperatures ranging from —196 to 850"C over which range the 0.2 pet yield strength dp -creased from 160,000 p si to 35,000psi, respectively. Swaging to 40 pet reduction in area, followed by a 30-min anneal at 1000c to remove residual cold work, increased the 0.2 pet yield to 260,000 psi at -196°C, dropping to 35,000 psi at 850°C. With passage of the Federal coal' Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, many challenges have been directed to the industry's mining and safety engineers. The most critical challenge is that of ventilation. The language concerning ventilation in many sections of the Act could very well deprive or limit the mining engineer in planning the ventilation for new mines, since the Act requires federal approval of all ventilation plans. Dependent upon approval and of course application of the law, this could, due to economics, prohibit the opening of new mines in some cases. Petitions for modification of some mandatory standards relating to ventilation have already been filed under Section 301(c). It is quite possible that many of these standards may be modified.

The results of column flotation tests conducted on a bulk sample of ultrafines discarded from the fine coal desliming cyclones at the Riverside coal preparation plant of Theiss Dampier Mitsui Coal Limited are presented. A 9% ash concentrate was obtained from a 51% ash ultrafine feed at 75-80% recovery of combustibles in a single stage of column flotation. From this result it is predicted that installation of column flotation at Riverside would lead to the annual recovery of additional coal worth $US5.1M. The operating conditions for coal and copper column flotation are compared and some differences which may result in a variation in column design are noted.

I have in mind one plant where the sulfur content of the entire bed is more than 2 per cent., yet if the bottom 12 in. and the top 12 or 15 in. are separated, the main portion of the bed, some 6 ft., will not contain more than 1.25 per cent. sulfur; and yet in this mine the entire bed .is worked together, the resultant coke, as a matter of course, not being fit for use in iron smelting. Not sufficient notice is taken of the "Double-thick" Upper Freeport coal in Allegheny and Butler counties. This is a very valuable deposit. Other areas where there is a, top member of the Upper Freeport coal are also known, which add to the value of this bed as a coking coal. This double Freeport coal is especially suited for byproduct coking. I cannot be as optimistic as regards the "low-sulfur" Pittsburgh coal in Greene county as the authors. The exposure of miners to radon gas and its airborne daughter products is a serious health problem which has long been recognized in the uranium mining industry. The association of high exposure to alpha particle emitters with incidence of lung cancer is well established. There continues to be a pressing need to reduce and eventually eliminate the high incidence of occupational lung cancer among uranium miners through the development of new and improved measurement and control technologies. This paper highlights the current efforts of the Bureau of Mines radiation hazards research program. It is aimed at obtaining a fundamental understanding of the behavior and transport of radon and radon daughters, developing more accurate and reliable instruments and measurement methods and developing cost-effective control techniques. Also discussed are the most recent accomplishments and the future research plans of the program.
