Proton microprobe and electron microprobe analysis are being used in combination for in situ determination of the trace element contents of oxide, sulphide and silicate minerals in a sample of the Merensky Reef. Initial results indicate that chromites contain only Ni, Zn, Ga, Zr ar d Nb. Platinum-group elements, if present, are at concentrations less than 2 to 6ppm. Ru, Rh and Pd are the only platinum group elements to be consistently detected in the sulphides. PentLindite is the most important host for these elements with the concentration of these elements being dependant upon the mineral association in which it occurs

Introduction In terms of the world's recoverable coal reserves, Canada ranks 10th, providing 0.6% of the world's total. The US is first with 27.8% and the Soviet Union follows with 24.1%. Figure 1 shows the principal coal mines in Canada. Several provinces contain substantial coal deposits, but the largest deposits are found in the western provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Conservatively, 90% of the lignitic, 80% of high volatile bituminous, and nearly 100% of subbituminous, and low and medium volatile bituminous coals are located in these three provinces. During the past decade, Canadian coal production of all types increased from 18.8 Mt (2 million st) in 1972, to 25 Mt (28 million st) in 1975, to 61 Mt (66 million st) in 1984. About 38 Mt (43 million st) of this output was classified at thermal and 23 Mt (25 million st) as coking and metallurgical coal (Table 1). The three western provinces currently produce 57 Mt (62 million st) of coal - 95% of Canada's total. The remaining 3.6 Mt (4 million st) (5%) is produced in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on the east coast. The majority of western coal (98%) is produced by surface mining methods. On the east coast, though, mining is predominantly underground and only 15% is produced on the surface. In 1985, Canada exported close to 28 Mt (30 million st) of metallurgical coal and thermal coal. During the same period, 15 Mt (16 million st) of coal were imported, mostly from western US for use in Ontario and Quebec. Almost 60% of the imported coal was used for thermal applications. The remaining 40% was metallurgical coal for the steel industry. It is generally cheaper to import coal into central and eastern Canada from the eastern US to augment local supplies rather than from western Canada. This is mainly because of high transportation costs. Mining methods The suitability of mining methods in a particular area depends largely on the geological setting. Drilling underground can be a hazardous undertaking in many circumstances. Raiseboring and boxhole boring underground could form an integral part of the block caving production methodology and getting the right mix of technical capability, ergonomics and economical viability has been the goal of many machine manufacturers. With the introduction of the Terratec Universal Boring Machine concept, flexibility of raiseboring, downreaming and boxholing has been enhanced by the introduction of a single machine that will perform all three processes. In addition to its technical flexibility, additional safety features have been introduced that will eliminate many sources of injury by mechanising most of the operational procedures. Together with the one-man remote operation, this machine design addresses and solves many of the safety issues. This paper outlines the machine concept, details its safety features and shows the techno-economic advantages for use in the block caving environment. Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large massive orebodies because of the inherent low costs and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are mined by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Extraction of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling (Figure 1).

Mintek has developed a non-destructive Resin-in-Leach method for the recovery of Rare Earth Elements (REE) from phosphogypsum (PG) waste dumps. However, PG from different sources was found to be highly variable in terms of REE recovery and physical properties. Development of a pre-treatment process was initiated to improve the robustness of the current REE recovery process in order to render it effective for any type of PG. Extensive research into the mineralogy of REE associations with PG revealed that the majority of REE are trapped inside phosphogypsum clusters which inhibits their recovery. Hydrothermal treatment of PG-containing slurry was found to result in re-crystallisation of gypsum with the release of REE phases encapsulated in it. This process was tested on various PG samples and subsequent REE recoveries improved from 5 to 80%. This approach carries a large potential for unlocking value associated with gypsum dumps worldwide.

Main ore pass systems should last the life of a mine, and too often expensive and hazardous remedial measures are required to repair a damaged ore pass in an attempt to extend its life. In order to maximize the life expectancy of all ore passes at Moab Khotsong, ?wearing blocks? and ?softer support? systems, combined with basic rock engineering principles, have been implemented. Failure of an ore pass can have severe financial implications, both indirectly because the ore pass cannot deliver the broken rock either from level to level or directly in the shaft ore pass system to the required level for tramming to take place, and directly due to the cost of the repair work that is required. Several factors need to betaken into consideration so that production interruptions are eliminated or minimized. Investigations of damaged ore passes at Moab Khotsong and surrounding mines revealed some interesting mechanisms of damage, and some innovative methods of reducing or eliminating the damage have been implemented at Moab Khotsong. The system design was based on 30 years, experience in main shaft rock passes. The design was to counteract scaling, hang-ups and dust problems associated with main rock passes, and the objective was to increase the life of rockpasses. These problems, including the initial design aspects to try and eliminate the repair measures, are discussed in detail.

Konkola No 3 shaft experienced severe mining induced stress and time related deterioration in ground conditions in an area where an over-cut and bench (OCB) mining method was used to extract a shallow dipping wide orebody. This caused an unacceptable risk for safe mining operations to sustain the required levels of production. After a review of the conditions it was decided to change the mining method to CASCADE to recover ore in the affected area and modify the OCB method and use a modified over-cut and bench method (MOCB) for new mining sections. This paper describes the geotechnical criteria included to derive the mining standards for the MOCB. The geotechnical risks are identified and taken into account to develop stope design parameters, stoping sequences and support requirements. A monitoring programme to assess conditions as mining progresses is also discussed.

Introduction The endeavours to mechanise the shaft sinking operations have led to the development of shaft boring using a V-Mole. The method implies competent ground and a pilot hole of sufficient verticality. This connects the top and the bottom of the shaft and serves for air ventilation and the transport of mullock. The shaft boring machine - nick name V-Mole - with a general pattern similar to a tunnel-borer reames the pilot hole to the designed diameter of the shaft. (Figure 1) The excavating of the rock, the removal of the mullock from the face and the lining of the shaft wall are done simultaneously. If they can be done also continuously this than creates a high potential of productivity. The verticality of the shaft can be garanteed due to the laser beam guided steering system. The diameter of the shaft is variable in steps of 0.5 m between 6.0 and 10 m in accordance with the need. It decides the capacity of the V-Mole to be applied. The depth of the shaft does not depend on the machine. It is practically unlimited as long as a suitable pilot hole is available. Up to 1988 almost 12.656 m of shaft have been drilled on 40 individual projects in Germany and the U.S.A. using a V-Mole. The rocks penetrated were Carboniferous sediments consisting of Sandstones, Shales, Conglomerates and Coal seams. The average uniaxial compressive strength was in the range of 300 - 700 Mpa with a maximum of 1700 Mpa in some singular sandstones.

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

It is doubtful if the far-reaching sociological influence and effects of the last few years will be fully appreciated within the present generation, but there are certain lessons and morals already apparent from which we should profit immediately. One of these has been an insistent, though vague, feeling among engineers and men of technical training and experience, that their worth as political and economic factors is not recognized by society. This feeling has found expression first in a tendency on the part of these men to organize for the purpose of securing recognition, or to demand greater activity in their interest on the part of societies already organized. However it may be accomplished, the demand for some means of binding engineers together for purposes of self-interest and public good is in the air and will not be denied. In other words, the time is' propitious for two things: vastly increasing the membership of engineering societies, and serving that membership according to its desires. The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down production at the remaining two potlines at its Point Comfort, Texas primary aluminum smelter due to the increased costs of natural gas. Total capacity of the facility, which had been partially closed since 1976, was 185,000 tons per year representing 3.6 percent of current capacity in the United States. There were practically no price movements in March on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot, with producers at 53¢ per pound and dealers, 48¢-48.5¢. BISMUTH The March selling position of U.S. producer metal was held at $3.50 per pound. In contrast, east coast dealers and traders adjusted their quotes from $2.55-$2.60 to a wider range of $2.40-$2.60.

A series of four coal combustion experiments (I)' was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in the Safety Research Coal Mine to evaluate the response of optical and ionization smoke and CO sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. With the increased utilization of diesel engines in underground coal mines, it is important to be able to discriminate fire products-of-combustion (POC) from diesel emissions. One proposed method to accomplish this is the deployment and interpretation of multiple sensors.

"An evaluation of mineralization in the Goosly- Owen Lake area of central British Columbia is the result of a comprehensive geochemical study of rock samples obtained from a regional geological survey. The dispersion of metals in country rocks about a line of Tertiary intrusions suggests that these igneous bodies may be genetically related to known sulphide replacements, disseminations and vein deposits. The geochemical investigation is based on the determination of 12 elements from samples gathered from more than 800 scattered field stations. To assist processing and interpretation, the data are subjected to a variety of statistical procedures, including correlation of the elements, factor analysis, clustm• analysis and computer contouring of the elements. Some practical applications of rock geochemistry in regional exploration are indicated."

The development of new processes has to follow "best practice" rules in order to be technically and economically as efficient as possible. However, innovations, new process routes and new rules are continuously emerging to minimize financial risk and maximize environmental compliance. Process simulation, which offers a complete overview of the flowsheet, makes it possible to cope with this new challenge-minimizing waste production and water consumption. Furthermore, simulation provides an estimate, at the early stage, of the cost of alternative technical routes. Four examples involving biotechnological circuits are presented, both at the design and commissioning stages.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research to determine the effects of a barium-based fuel additive on diesel particulate emissions. The test engine was typical of types used to power underground coal min-ing equipment. Test parameters consisted of baseline measurements without additive, three fuel additive concentrations, and five steady-state engine loads, all at 1,200 r/min. Additive effects on soot mass concen-tration, opacity, particle size distribution, volatile fraction, and NOx emissions were determined. Important findings are as follows: Using the manufacturer's recom-mended additive concentration increased the gravimetrically measured mass of particulate by 30 to 80 pct at four of the five steady-state load conditions. Soot measurements by optical methods did not agree with those by gravimetric techniques, for additive-treated fuels. The additive reduced volatile hydrocarbons adsorbed on filter deposits by up to 50 pet. At most engine loads, carbon particulate was also reduced. About 40 pet of the barium added to the fuel was accounted for in the exhaust. The health implications for miners were considered, but no firm conclusions were drawn or recommendations made because the results are for steady-state conditions, which may not be representative of real-world operation of diesel-powered equipment underground.

The extraction kinetics in a novel solvent extraction process have been investigated. In this process, the liquid-liquid emulsion is generated by bottom gas injection into countercurrently flowing aqueous and organic phases. This process has a number of advantages over the mixer-settler unit or the spray column in terms of simple equipment configuration, without any mechanical moving parts, and the ease of cleaning and process control, while providing a sufficiently large interfacial area for rapid mass transfer. The overall rate increased with increasing gas injection rate and height of the aqueous phase but decreased with increasing injector diameter at the same gas injection rate. The variation of the overall rate constant was correlated against a set of dimensionless numbers, representing the operating conditions. Extraction rates and efficiencies comparable to those in a mechanically generated emulsion were attained in this new process.

"SynopsisThe most widely used support design damage criterion for rockburst-prone mines is based upon kinetic energy, which is proportional to the square of the ejection velocity and is commonly expressed in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). Field monitoring and back-analyses have shown that ejection velocities of the order of 10 m/s and higher can result from seismic events of moderate magnitude. Such velocities are much higher than those predicted using PPV obtained from scaling laws. It has also been found that the peak ground motion (i.e. PPV) on the surface of an excavation is preferentially amplified (by four- to tenfold) compared to the motion in solid rock at a similar distance from the source. However, the wave propagation and interaction processes involved within the fractured rock in generating high ground motion are very complex and are not well understood at this time.In this paper, velocity amplification was investigated by modelling the dynamic interaction between fractured rock and a free surface using a 2D discontinuum-based numerical program, UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code). A 1D model with a fractured zone was used to represent the fractured rock. Velocity amplification, quantified by PPV, predicted at the free end of the model was 2.0–3.6 times higher than the input velocity. It was found that the wave frequency, fracture stiffness, fracture spacing, and thickness of fractured zone are the main factors that affect the velocity amplification. The results have proved that the interaction of the seismic wave and multiple fractures near the free surface strongly influences the ground motion.IntroductionSince mining-induced seismicity is almost inevitable in deep mines, ground support is generally employed to mitigate the risk of seismically-induced damage. The most widely used support design criterion for seismicallyprone mines is one that seeks to maximize the absorption of the kinetic energy (plus potential energy if a gravity component is considered) of key rock blocks. Based on this criterion, design methods for rock support were first proposed by Wagner (1984) in South Africa and later improved, among others, by Roberts and Brummer (1988) and Kaiser et al. (1996)."

This circular presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that responded to the Bureau of Mines annual economic survey and reported production for 1959. The companies named herein represent virtually all producers of processed fuels of mineral origin. A few small companies may not have been canvassed or failed to respond, however, as some plants operate intermittently, and the survey is voluntary. No consideration was given to size of the plant and all plants that reported commercial production were included. Specifically excluded were plants that manufactured briquets from wood charcoal. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured solid fuels, fabricated from fine-sized mineral fuels by mixing with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped pieces, 2 to 4 inches long, weighing 2 to 4 ounces. Packaged fuel consists of 3- to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. The overall size of a popular package is 10-112 x 7 x 3-1/2 inches. Briquets are durable, may be stored outdoors, and shipped and used as bulk fuel. Packaged fuel is fragile, and must be stored indoors to keep it from deteriorating. Whereas briquets are consumed in many areas as a general residential fuel, packaged fuel is more of a specialty item, used at times as a supplement to other fuels. Package fuel is burned without removing the paper and referred to as the "white-glove" fuel.
