Microscopic examination of selected, representative, unweathered samples of Birmingham, Alabama, Silurian, sedimentary iron ores has fully revealed the nature of the phosphorous-bearing mineral grains. The grains are composed of carbonate-fluorapatite (collophane), range in size from 1 um to 2.25 mm, and exhibit varied types of intergrowth with hematite. Modal analyses conducted under cathodolumi-nescence have provided quantitative data on the a3undance of each of 15 types of phosphorous-bearing mineral grains and made it possible to assess the potential phosphorous liberation from four types of iron ore. The results indicate that 27% of the total phosphorous contained in the iron ores in the western part of the Birmingham district can be expected to be liberated by fine grinding; 60% for ores in the eastern part of the district.

Gear pumps are very commonly used for the pumping of AN-water based emulsion products for both handling and blast loading applications. The potential major hazardous problems likely to be encountered with these pumps are: (i) high probability of friction; (ii) possibility of product confinement in the area of the bushings; (iii); high bearing failure rate; (iv) pump running dry; (v) presence of foreign material; (vi) deadheading of pump; (vii) delamination of elastomer from steel gears. Of all these possible scenarios, the no-flow situations where the pump is running dry or deadheaded have always been recognized as the most serious ones.

"Highwall miners continue to be implemented by operations to increase recovery, improve margins, and justify higher stripping ratios as high quality surface reserves become increasingly rare. Many times, operations facilitate projected underground operations by leaving an intact highwall for development purposes. These facts result in larger highwalls that are left standing for increased periods of time prior to reclamation. As a consequence, worker exposure and risk is also elevated, resulting in higher potential for accidents or fatalities relating to surface highwalls. Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent on both geologic and mining factors. Dynamic numerical modeling offers the capability to assess possible stability issues related to blasting-induced ground vibrations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of highwall stability due to ground vibrations from blasting events. Additionally, the relationship of amplitude and frequency, and their impact on highwall stability is investigated. The results of this modeling indicate that amplitude has little impact on stability. However, frequency has a significant impact on highwall stability. INTRODUCTION The number of mining fatalities has declined since 2010, and 2016 is currently on pace to continue this trend (MSHA 2016). This decline can be directly correlated to the decline in surface mining activity and the overall decline of the coal industry. However, since 2002 the percentage of surface coal mine fatalities associated with highwall activities remains relatively high, constituting approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities. 2014 was the first year with a highwall failure fatality since 2011. Most recent surface coal mining fatalities are associated with machinery and haulage. Table 1 provides a summary of the total surface coal mining fatalities, and the number of highwall failure fatalities dating back to 2010.Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent upon geology and geologic discontinuities within the rock mass, along with highwall geometry, standing time, and applied stresses. Another possible concern that has not been previously investigated is the effect of blasting-induced stresses on highwall stability and the stability of web/barrier pillar systems as a result of ground vibrations from blasting events. Many modern surface coal mines employ numerous extraction fronts that rely on blasting for primary rock breakage. This results in highwall and highwall pillar systems experiencing blasting-induced stresses of many different types and magnitudes."

In the majority of recently commissioned gold mines granular activated carbon is used to adsorb gold from alkaline cyanide pulps or solutions. At the same time the carbon also adsorbs many other inorganic and organic species, most of which lower the activity of the carbon. Removal of these foulants is necessary before the carbon is reactivated and recycled. Standard practice for re- storing carbon activity involves high temperature treatment in a kiln - an apparently straightforward unit operation which is not always satisfactorily carried out. This paper presents the results of some fundamental work carried out on the thermal reactivation of carbon in a laboratory rotating pot kiln. The effects of temperature and steam addition on carbon activity were examined and compared with the activity of carbons obtained from a number of commercial kilns. Carbon was also reactivated using a small-scale Rintoul Furnace in which carbon was resistively heated by the direct passage of an alternating electric current. It was established that both elevated temperatures and the addition of steam to hot carbon generally enhanced its activity although peat-based extruded carbons responded a little differently to coconut shell types. Other measurements made included the weight loss and the hardness of carbons as a function of reactivation conditions.

Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed. A method is described in which particulate iron, as distinguished from high purity iron powders used in powder metallurgy, is a precipitant for copper contained in dilute solutions. A new precipitation apparatus utilizes particulate iron precipitants to recover copper more efficiently than is possible in a conventional launder precipitation plant. In the search for lower cost methods of recovering copper from mine water, the use of sponge iron or particulate iron (as distinguished from iron powder used in powder metallurgy) as precipitants in place of tin cans, detinned scrap iron, or scrap iron is an intriguing possibility. The relatively faster copper precipitation rate obtained with particulate iron as compared to scrap iron promises economic and processing advantages when, and if, particulate iron becomes competitive cost-wise with available scrap iron. Kennecott has developed a precipitation cone,' see Fig. 1, utilizing various particulate iron precipitants and has demonstrated the process successfully in a prototype at a flow rate of approximately 1000 gal of solution per min. Essentially complete precipitation of copper is obtained, the cone overflow solution is clear and contains no particulate copper, and the iron factor is more favorable than in a conventional launder plant. Initially, sponge iron produced at the Ray Mines Div. Kennecott Copper Corp. for use in a Leach-Precipitation-Flotation process was used in exploratory tests to develop a suitable apparatus to take advantage of the rapid precipitation rate and efficient iron utilization for the recovery of copper from dilute solutions. Here it was demonstrated that, when sponge iron was added to a launder, the particles of iron collected in the bottom of the launder and tended to cement together. This resulted in incomplete precipitation of the copper and inefficient utilization of the iron. Next, sponge iron was suspended in glass columns to study the dynamics of the precipitation reaction. Again it was observed that the particles tended to cement together at low solution flow rates, while at higher flow rates large amounts of the precipitant overflowed the column, resulting in loss of precipitant and an inefficient process. Next, the precipitant was suspended in an inverted cone in a rising column of solution. Dynamic suspension of the solids was maintained at relatively rapid solution flow rates with instantaneous and complete precipitation of copper and with improved iron utilization. The first tests were conducted on a batch basis and it was determined that a dynamically suspended bed of precipitant was necessary for satisfactory operation. More than 99% of the metallic iron could be converted to metallic copper by careful control of the residence time in the cone and copper precipitation was essentially complete, even when the available iron precipitant was almost depleted. Several cones were built, ranging in capacity from 1 to 200 gal of feed solution per min, and finally, a prototype cone was constructed which was 20-ft high

Quebec Cartier Mining Company came to the conclusion t hat an electric trolley assist providing more horsepower than available from dieselgenerator sets presented the best oppor tunity for improvement. Accordingly, a testing and development program was carried out which resulted in the design, installat ion and application of a practical system. This paper describes the development of the system, the equipment used as well as the actual operation. A projection is also made to indicate further improvement in productivity. A comparison is made of truck operating data before and after activation of the trolley assist system in order to determine its economic impact."

"A well-considered composite of ZA-27 reinforced with weight percentage 0, 2, 4, and 6% of alwninite particulate has been made by compocasting technique. The elastic properties of ZA- 27 /alwniniute particulate composite were determined by using U1M. The results showed that the modulus of elasticity and UTS of the composite gradually increases with increase in the wt.% of reinforcement. However, the overall ductility decreased monotonically with an increase in reinforcement. The results of these tests· as well as the predictions of several model~ for composite strengthening available in the literature were compared with experimental results. As part of its overall goal to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated the feasibility of producing subsieve-size material by an attrition grinding method. The Bureau-patented technique employed intense agitation of a mixture of the material to be ground, a granular grinding media, and a suspending fluid. A variety of materials were successfully ground to extremely fine particle sizes. Studies were made to determine the method's efficiency in grinding industrial minerals and metals to minus 2 micrometers and ceramic powders to an average particle size of 500 angstroms. Transfer of this technology to a commercial scale has been achieved. Commercial-scale units are currently being used in the paper-coating clay and titania pigment industries.

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. We commonly consider conflict in a two-party sense, but this deeply over-simplifies the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

Reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from State mine inspectors, for November, 1930, showed that 219 men were killed in the coal mines of the United States during the month, an increase of 25 over the previous month and 33 over November, 1929. On the other hand the production of coal decreased, the output of 43,329,000 tons in November being 8,397,000 tons less than in October and 9,005,000 tone less than in November a year ago. The larger number of fatalities accompanied by a smaller output of coal resulted in a higher death rate4 per million tons in November than in the same month last year or in October, 1930. The November rate was 5.05, as compared with 3.55 for November, 1929 and 3.75 for October, 1930. The increase in the rate for the industry as a whole was chargeable entirely to bituminous mines, as the anthracite mines had fewer fatalities in November than in either of the previous months to which reference has been made. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed that accidents at this class of mines resulted in a death rate of 5.12, based on 195 fatalities and a production of 38,122,000 tons. This rate indicated an increase of 55 per cent over the rate for October, of the same year, and 72 per cent over the rate for November, 1929. The October record was 146 fatalities and 44,150,000 tons, and that for November a year ago was 138 deaths and a production of 46,514,000 tons.

The stripping of iron-laden solvent with hydrochloric acid in the iron-removal step of the clay-hydrochloric acid process for the extraction of alumina from calcined kaolinitic clay results in a loaded ferric chloride stripping liquor. Treatment of this stripping liquor at boiling with calcined kaolin to form insoluble Fe203(s) and a dilute A1C13 solution was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to characterize process problems and to aid in sizing of solids-liquid separation equipment. Variables identified as important in the chemical reaction were calcined kaolin particle size, ratio of calcined kaolin to FeC13, and reaction time. These parameters were tested for significance and their interactions investigated. Fine calcined kaolin (-65 mesh) at a greater than 1:1 mole ratio of contained acid-soluble A1203 to Fe203 equivalent of the FeC13 in the stripping liquor required less reaction time than coarser (-16 mesh) material. Solids-liquid separation of the reacted slurries by both settling and filtration requires flocculation.

The paper deals with the results of dynamic tests carried out on a range of surface support liners consisting of combinations of mesh (various types), shotcrete, and wire rope lacing. The testing was carried out over the period 1993 to 1998. The dynamic testing method made use of drop weight impact loading of test samples which attempted to simulate realistic in situ conditions, and the range of loading imposed was equivalent to small to severe rockburst conditions. The results of the testing provide quantitative data, in the form of input energy, which is relevant for support design and for the choice of support types appropriate for situations in which significant mine-induced seismicity occurs or is expected to occur. In addition to the wire mesh and shotcrete liner systems tested, estimates of energy capacity are made for other, untested, systems.

The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers (FSPE) recently conducted a survey of professional engineering manpower in South Africa. This article presents the data relevant to mining and metallurgical engineering. FSPE in their survey attempted to determine the supply of engineers in South Africa both from local universities and by immigration. The immigrants gave some problems in that it is difficult to know whether a man who claims to be professionally qualified really is. However, it was estimated that the ratio of immigrants who claimed to be qualified to those who really are the equivalent of our local graduates was between 1,0 and 1,9 for mining engineers, and between 2,0 and 4,1 for metallurgical engineers.

During the design and construction of a coal preparation facility, there are many items that can cause serious problems if not properly handled in the early stages of a project. These problems can be a detriment to smooth owner/ contractor relationships, the designing of a flow sheet, the selection of equipment, the design of the facility, the maintenance of schedule and budget, and a smooth start-up. It is the purpose of this presentation to identify some of these problems and to suggest steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate their impact.

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.
