"A comprehensive analysis of the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems has been investigated. Cations chosen for this analysis included groups 1A and 2A, rare-earth elements and other common transition metal ions such as Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Ag+, Cd2+, U4+, UO2 2+, Hg2+, Al3+ and Zn2+. The Newton-Raphson technique was used to calculate and plot various metal species over a wide range of pH. This study has clearly shown that by adjusting the concentration of OH-, the separation of Fe from Mn, U from V, Ce and Eu from other rare-earth elements, and In from Sn is possible. The effects of hydrated metal ions on the separation and removal of various metals from each other under various conditions is discussed.IntroductionThe primary purpose of hydrometallurgical processing is to extract, remove and purify various metals from diverse sources. Hydrometallurgists are frequently preoccupied by the extraction of cations in metallic form, but overlook the important role anions play in such processes. A proper choice of anions can determine the fate of successful extraction, removal and purification of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2005; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), and also separation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974) of cations from various solutions.In this study, the authors have examined some of the effects that anions play in various solutions. The anion considered in this study was the first hydroxide, OH-. Other anions, such as Cl-, Br-, I-, and CN-, will be dealt with in the second part of the series of two papers."

The Ok Tedi porphyry copper and gold mine is an open-pit operation located within the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and is situated near the headwaters of the Ok Tedi-Fly River system. The climate is equatorial sub-alpine with rainfall ranging from five to ten metres per year. Mining commenced in 1984 and to-date approximately 500 Mt of waste rock has been produced. A failing waste rock dump system operates whereby the dumps are eroded by tributary creeks of the Ok Tedi. It is estimated that approximately 250 Mt of waste is retained within the upper reaches of the river system. The waste rock comprises both potentially acid forming rock and limestone and to-date the overall waste has been acid consuming. However, the long-term mine plan identifies declining limestone production and hence an increasing risk of acid generation over the remaining years of the operation. A program was initiated to determine the net acid producing potential (NAPP) required (ie target NAPP) to minimise the risk of acid generation within the waste rock dumps. The results from this program provide guidelines for an operational target NAPP strategy to provide sufficient acid buffering across all size fractions in the waste rock dump for long-term ARD control. Implementation of this plan requires additional limestone to be mined and co-disposed with ROM waste rock.

In flotation, particulate materials are separated by controlling the hydrophobicity of the particles using appropriate collectors. In this regard, contact angle (?) is the most important process variable. However, the flotation models used in industry today do not include ? as a parameter. As result, flotation circuits are designed based on the first-order flotation rate constants (k) determined from laboratory experiments. A problem with this approach is that laboratory experiments usually give substantially higher k values than achievable in full-scale operations, which makes it difficult to use the model for plant design. In the present work, we have developed a model from first principles using both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters, such as ?, ?-potentials, surface tension (?), particle size, energy dissipation rate, etc. The basic approach is similar to the one developed previously for bubble-particle interactions under laminar flow conditions (Yoon and Mao, J. Colloid and Interface Science, 181, 61, 1996) except that the model parameters have been modified by considering the turbulence in a flotation cell. In addition, the model describes the recovery processes in froth phase, including bubble-coarsening due to coalescence. Based on this model, we have developed a computer simulator (FlotSim) that can be used to design flotation circuits from the mineralogical (or liberation) data on the feed and the hydrodynamic characteristics of a flotation machine. Since the model is dynamic, it can also be used for process control. Further, the simulator has predictive capacity as it is based on a first-principles model. The model-based simulator has been validated in a carefully controlled bench-scale flotation experiments. The pioneers in pressure hydrometallurgy have provided a solid foundation during the past four decades. The pressure techniques are now capable of being used to push back the frontiers in the winning of metals. Pressure hydrometallurgy has been used to meet the objectives of extracting metals; purifying metal solutions, recovering metals; and rendering waste streams acceptable for disposal to waste repositories and the environment. Some examples of each of these functions are briefly reviewed. The applicability of pressure techniques to the recovery of precious metals is discussed.

INTRODUCTION A team effort by the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor can help avoid serious problems on a construction project. It can save cost and time for both Owner and Contractor, as illustrated in the following case history of the West Zone and Siouf Keblia Collector System in Alexandria, Egypt (Contract 02-AID-83/84). Under the bilateral agreement made in 1980 between the United States of America and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States, through the Agency of International Development (USAID), gives approximately $1 billion per year as a grant to Egypt for various development projects. The Alexandria Wastewater Management System was selected in 1981 as one such project. The Egyptian Government Agency responsible for this work is the Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). A joint venture of two U.S. consulting engineering firms, CH2M HILL, Inc., and Metcalf & Eddy, Inc., called Wastewater Consultants Group, along with two local subconsultants, Engineering Consulting Group and Warith Engineering Co., were selected by AGOSD to study the sewer system and develop a plan to serve the immediate and long-range sewage disposal needs of Alexandria. Wastewater Consultants Group is currently involved in Phase I of the Master Plan. This initial step in providing Alexandria with an operating sewerage system for the current and near-term population (year 2000) consists of the design and construction management of 140 kilometers of collector and force main pipelines (including 9 miles of pipe jacking and tunneling in very soft clay), five new pumping stations, extensive rehabilitation of two treatment plants (built in the 1960s but never operated successfully), and installation of a sludge handling system. Phase I is scheduled to be completed by the end of 1991 at a total cost of around $250 million (US) plus 250 million

A contactor has been designed that avoids solvent loss due to coalescence and other causes. This consists of a column packed with grids. Slurry enters at the top and flows as films down the inclined surfaces of the grids. The solvent, which fills the column, flows counter currently to the slurry. Tests on, and modifications to the contactor are described. '

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). (written discussion).-The subject discussed in this paper has long been debated by operators in European fields, where very strong views are held regarding the advisability of controlling gas pressures by shutting in wells. While unwilling to theorize on the subject of restricted flow, the writer has always been disposed to associate himself with those who hesitate to impose any obstruction to a natural transitory state that breaks up the oil-containing strata and establishes a feeder system which no subsequent events, natural or artificial, can approach in intensity. In both Russia and Roumania, where the oil is concentrated in discontinuous, disturbed, and irregular lenticles of sand varying, within short distances, in coarseness of grain, extent of impregnation and degree of cementation, it has been the practice to let the wells run wild in order to provoke disruption of strata. By encouraging violent eruptions, an extended feeder system is created and the ejection of enormous quantities of sand, rock, and clay creates a sump and seepage area that it would be difficult to imitate by any artificial means, not excluding actual mining. Before discussing the somewhat novel method suggested for enlarging the infiltration area, the writer would like to confirm the fact that many valuable data applicable to oil are forthcoming from a study of water phenomena. Long association with water-supply problems in many parts of the world has shown how closely the phenomena of underground movements of water and oil are related, so that it is pleasing to note the author's use of water formulas. Large quantities of combustible materials are often found in underground metal and nonmetal mines, with support timber most often the predominant combustible material. Oils, lubricants, paper, cartons, and rags are additional combustible materials and are commonly found in maintenance shop areas. Welding and cuting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables, spontaneous combustion, and careless smoking are some of the common fire ignition sources. Inexpensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of such fires and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in underground maintenance shop areas. Technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H024216, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground maintenance shop areas. The mine area described in this report is a representative ex-ample only; the fire protection system described considers costs, benefits, equipment performance and includes the concepts of: ? Early warning and alarm ? Isolation ? Extinguishment ? Control. Each fire protection system application requires analysis of numerous variables including total mine profile (depth, personnel, escape routes, hazards, etc.).

INTRODUCTION The purpose of the following discussion is to present the state of the art of solution mining. Since the economics of a mining method ultimately determines its applicability and viability this presentation shall revolve around the costs of in- situ solution mining. First the assumed physical characteristics of the hypothetical ore body are described, followed by the appropriate operating assumptions. Then after a brief discussion on the type of surface plant to be used, the assumed project time tables and costs for Texas and Wyoming are presented. Finally, the economics of in-situ uranium leaching are analyzed through the use of discounted cash flow rate of return analysis. ORE BODY CHARACTERISTICS The assumption of the ore body characteristics is probably the most variable portion of this discussion. The characteristics that have been used are based mainly on state of the art technology, however, consideration of the most common depths of ore, ore thicknesses, and permeabilities also influenced these assumptions. In addition, it is assumed that these assumptions are equally applicable to Texas and Wyoming. The average grade of the ore is assumed to be .09% U308 with no apparent disequilibrium. The average thickness of ore is 2.29 m (7.5 ft) which results in an average grade-thickness (GT) of .675. The assumed depth to the top of the ore is 121.92 m (400 ft), the ore density is placed at 1.78 gm/cc (18 cu ft/ton), the porosity is estimated to be 28% and the permeability 1 darcy. These assumed ore body characteristics are shown in Table I. In addition, it is specified that the costs to be later discussed are based on a minimum GT cut-off of 0.15. It is more common to use GT cut-offs of 0.30 to 0.50 but GT cut-offs as low as 0.15 in conjunction with a minimum grade of 0.05% U308 have been used in the past with success and is considered state of the art. The ultimate percentage of uranium recovered from the ore is left to the discretion of the reader since the costs and economics are based on pounds recovered by the surface plant. OPERATING AS.SUMPTIONS An annual production rate of 200,000 lbs U308!yr was chosen for this example. In order to maintain this production rate, based on the ore body characterized above, a flow of 4731 liter/min (1250 GPM) with a recovery solution grade averaging .039 gm U308/liter is assumed. A regular 5 spot well field pattern is used with a well spacing of 21.5 m (70.7 ft) between like wells and 15.24 m (50 ft) between unlike wells. This well spacing gives each well an area of influence equal to 232.25 sq m (2500 sq ftl. An excess wells factor of 1.17 is used to estimate additional monitor wells and well field boundary wells. Each production well is expected to yield an average flow rate of 37.85 liter/min (10 GPM). In addition it is assumed that the ore body has a good shape in that it is not tenuous and narrow but has at least an average width of 200 ft. The process chemistry required for this ore body is assumed to be based on the sodium carbonate System- Oxygen is the chosen oxidant. Sodium chloride elution followed by precipitation with hydrogen peroxide makes up the remaining portion of the process. A fluidized up-flow ion exchange system is specified. The operating assumptions are listed in Table II. Restoration of the ore body shall be assumed to be accomplished through the use of ground water flush. Other methods may be considered as having to fall within the costs estimated for a ground water flush in order to be economic. In Texas it is assumed that a high capacity disposal well (200 GPM +I is required and in Wyoming evaporation ponds covering approximately 35 acres are to be used. No specific cost has been given to restoration. Instead only the additional capital investment for restoration equipment is given. Then, one year of restoration operating expense is estimated and included as the operating expense for one year beyond the last pound of U308 produced. It is also assumed that restoration will be pursued in the mined out areas of the ore body contiguous with ongoing production.

This Bureau of Mines report describes an automatic and continuous transducer-drift compensator. The compensator formed a part of the instrumentation used to indicate the saturation by hydrogen of a cryogenic, adsorption column. It has a variable delayed-response characteristic and will respond only to signals having rise times faster than component drift times. Zero drift due to varying ambient conditions and component aging is nullified. Equations relating the output as a function of the input signal are given.

Provide a lighter, smaller apparatus for more gently supporting electrical cable as it is raised or lowered in a well as compared with the conventional method of using a winch and pulley. Approach The conventional method of running cable into a well is to use a winch to pull the cable over a pulley located at the end of a boom placed over the well. This has the disadvantages of being bulky and of placing a concentrated strain on the cable at the point where it moves over the pulley. These disadvantages are overcome by using a "Chinese finger" cable grip assembly to hold and release a multiple conductor cable.

Laboratory testing of the self-heating propensity of coal, using crossing-point temperature and differential thermal analysis techniques, involves the frequent recording of several temperatures. The volume of data and the desire for high accuracy of measurements motivates an automated recording system. The data which are recorded must be adjusted for calibration factors and the results presented in both graphical and tabular form. The paper describes hardware and software features of a computerised system which is being used to establish the relative propensity to self-heating of a wide variety of coals.

Grinding is the most energy consuming step in mineral processing, however, it is still poorly understood and its efficiency is difficult to monitor. Mill performances are traditionally measured at the mill discharge, on the basis of a mass percentage passing a certain sieve. This approach does not reflect what happens to the fines through milling. On another hand, if many macroscopic parameters, such as the percent solids of the pulp, its viscosity, or its mean residence time in the mill are known to be related to grinding efficiency, the link between these parameters and particle size distribution (PSD) is still unclear. Here, a methodology is established to understand the effect of ball mill operating conditions on particle size and shape distribution in the grinding process. The study focuses on the particular case of an Upper Group 2 (UG-2) platinum ore concentrator. Due to the very low grade of sulphide and PGM (Platinum group metals) in UG-2, grinding mechanisms are entirely control by gangue minerals. These two minerals have contrasted properties and PGM content and these properties immediately affect the entire recovery process. So, the grinding of both gangue minerals is studied on a size by size basis. At particle scale, three parameters are addressed: particle size, particle composition and particle shape. The specific behavior of chromite and silicate grains is demonstrated. As a conclusion, this study gives some clues to operate ball mills in a more efficient manner regarding chromite issue in the processing of UG-2. Getting spodumene to float quickly and cleanly can be a problem. The author has presented an excellent account of a valid and useful approach to the scale-up of such problem floats. This indicated advantages for doubling retention time, i.e., buying another set of flotation cells. The author states that 21 pct of the spodumene floated in 2 min in the laboratory cell, that the grade of the rougher was about 75 pct spodumene, and that the final tailing contained 4 to 12 pct spodumene in different sizes with the present cells and 1 to 9 pct spodumene with twice as many cells.

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines contract research on the disposal of retorted oil shale. A data base has been developed describing the physical-chemical properties, geotechnical engineering properties, and natural cementation characteristics of spent shale. Results of field compaction tests and seepage pond tests are presented, along with results of a partially saturated finite element seepage model used to predict infiltration and seepage rates. Preliminary engineering analyses are presented for underground disposal systems, which include material transport methods, and for a surface disposal system, which includes stability analyses.

When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and Mineral Processing Systems (MPSI) merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare design pro¬cedures and the research upon which they were based. Several semiautogenuous (SAG) mill analyses are compared using Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then used in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria. Given the opportunity to compare the total philosophies and methods of several companies involved in the design and fabrication of grinding mills, it was important to first develop the comparison method and ground rules. One option was to compare analytical methods by details such as numerical techniques and accuracies. However, this option was discarded in favor of a more general approach. The question that was finally posed was in two parts. Given an identical mill requirement: • What would be the difference in the analytical design result, and to what aspect of the analytical process could this difference be attributed? • What would be the difference in approaches to obtaining the final hardware in subcontracting, both in specifying and Quality Assurance surveillance? By using this comparative approach, questions of relative conservativeness and reliability would automatically be answered.

Cost management in the conditions of increasing competition and unforeseen market turbulence constitutes one of the key areas of the enterprise?s activity. In the last two years the demand for hard coal on the domestic and global market of non-renewable resources has increased significantly. Polish hard coal mining industry, as an industry in the stage of decline, received a chance for rejuvenation. However, one of the most significant conditions of seizing this opportunity is the rationalization of mining costs and improvement of production effectiveness. Due to the significance of this issue, the main objective of the paper is to identify the possibilities of improving the production effectiveness in the hard coal mining industry. In order to meet such an objective, in the first part of the paper we measured effectiveness in the Polish hard coal mines in years 2006- 2011. The research encompassed three out of five mining enterprises operating in the country. Then based on the received results, guidelines concerning the improvement of effectiveness of production were created, taking into consideration infrastructural, technical, economic and organizational determinants. Furthermore, opportunities and threats for improving the production effectiveness, stemming from the external conditions have also been indicated.

One of the first things we tell a potential new client is that they have only one chance to make a first impression with an Aboriginal community; all future communications and engagement will be predicated on that first impression. The key components of this most critical meeting are not your power point, your maps, or your draft plan for development ? they are instead a genuine, evident and clear demonstration of a sincere desire to develop a positive relationship that is based upon respect, and consideration and understanding of local communities and their interests, needs and desires. Relationship building is the foundation of proactive and positive consultation and accommodation with Aboriginal communities and the tone is set with the first meeting. C3 has refused more clients than we have accepted due most often to the fact that relationships between the company and the Aboriginal community have already devolved into a tense and toxic scenario. Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally and economically sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty confidence to invest in mineral exploration will be severely eroded. We all understand that substantive investments in exploration are required to increase the possibility of discovering, defining and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by Aboriginal Peoples and the mineral sector can provide the required business certainty and deliver social and economic benefits for local Aboriginal communities.
