Recent investigations in the United States and in other countries have produced considerable information on the nature and occurrence of minor elements in coal. The possibility of recovering certain elements, particularly germanium and uranium, from coal ash and other coal products has received considerable attention. Some flue dusts are potential sources of germanium, and certain lignite deposits are potential sources of uranium, but industrial recovery of these elements has been limited to small quantities for technical and economic reasons. Considering the large amount of coal mined annually, a small percentage of a rare element may have industrial significance if an economical method of recovery can be developed. In 1944 information on the occurrence of rare elements in coal was reviewed in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 669 (46).3 This report is a revision of that paper with the view of summarizing published information available for United States coals, and pertinent information concerning coals of other countries. Selected references from the original paper are retained. New references do not include all preliminary reports when more permanent literature describing complete projects is available. William Metcalf, Pittsburgh, Pa. : In rising to discuss Dr. Dadley's paper, I feel somewhat as I did at the Baltimore meeting —that a "crucible" man has no right to interfere in a "Bessenier" discussion; yet having read the paper very carefully, I feel impelled to say something, for two reasons: First, because I believe Dr. Dudley is entirely on the right and having undertaken and partly accomplished a great work, he .is entitled to the help of all who have experience in these matters; and second, because the data given force me to colicur in Captain Jones's opinion that the analyses are incomplete, since they ignore sulphur, copper, nitrogen, and possibly other injurious elements. In an experience of fourteen years, and with probably more than a hontlwl tests, we have never found the chemistry and the of crucible steel to disagree. If in any cave a disagreement tins sp- . peared, it has been our invariable custom to go over all our physirtal testa with great care, and if we found no error, then to refer the matter back to the cherubt, who has invariably found some unexjmted element to account for the trouble. It is only just to the chemist to say here, that ordinarily be is only expected to determine phosphorus, silicon, sulphnr. Generally the metals, with the exception of manganese, are not looked for, although a watch is usually kept for copper and arsenic. Further, in most cases we have found our own work more liable to be faulty than the chemist's. Having arrived then at such a degree of experience that we can preJict the analysis from our tests, or our tests from the analysis, with almost absolute certainty, I can see no reason why the same results map not be attained in the Bessemer practice. The results so far show the potential to discriminate between barren and diamondiferous source rocks, and to distinguish multiple sources within single Drainages.

A survey of the underground injection of steel processing waste pickle liquor (WPL) was made by Bureau of Mines engineers. Hydrochloric and sulfuric acids WPL are being injected into deep wells completed in the Cambrian age Mt. Simon Sandstone Formation in Illinois and Indiana. The Mt. Simon Formation ranges up to 1,800 feet in thickness. The average depth of WPL injection wells is 4,000 feet, and injection is mostly by gravity flow at rates as high as 4,000 barrels per day. The details of the design and operating history of a WPL well located near Gary, Ind., are discussed. Laboratory tests showed that the Mt. Simon Sandstone is sensitive to fresh water. The adsorption of iron and neutralization of acids by sandstone cores from deep wells and an outcrop were determined.

Careful consideration is given to the type of cleaning equipment and control systems to be used when selecting circuits for washing fine coal (0.5 mm x 0, or 28 mesh x 0, size fraction). However, desliming, declaying, and sizing procedures required for efficient operation normally are not evaluated in sufficient detail, resulting in disappointing system performance. This paper details desliming and de. watering circuit design that is effective based on recent test data. The circuit maintains control of the 0.5 mm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) (declayed) size fraction with minimal misplaced material and maximized circuit efficiency. A discussion of circuit design parameters and control systems, as well as results from the testing program, are included in this text.

Bore surfaces of used guns commonly show a pattern of cracks in various degrees of development. It has been suggested that these cracks may aid erosion by providing channelways for the gases, eventually leading to the tearing out of blocks of metal. Under the general studies of gun erosion conducted at the Geophysical Laboratory it appeared desirable to consider this factor, and to determine the resistance to surface cracking offered by gun steel and by various other materials that might be used in the bores of guns. Method and Apparatus In order to make such a determination it is necessary to have (I) an arrangement in which the surface to be studied can be subjected to conditions similar to those in a gun with respect to temperature, pressure (developed by explosion gases), composition of the gases and length of time the surface is exposed to the gases; and (2) a specimen that can be examined readily after any number of shots, and then fired again, if necessary. The first of these conditions can be met by using an explosion vessel designed by H. S. Roberts of the Geophysical Laboratory. Fig I shows a cross-section of the apparatus. The "gun" G from which the charge is fired is made from the receiver of a caliber 0.30 army rifle, M1903, and the charges are prepared in caliber 0.30 cartridge cases. The test specimen S is held in place by a cone-shaped plug P and by a steel bridge B which is bolted to the outside of the explosion vessel on either side of the section shown. The plug, in turn, is held in place by a screw collar C. Maximum pressure is controlled by a brass rupture disk R. Part of the explosion gases flow past the two flat areas on S. Temperature and composition of gases, and the time before the rupture disk breaks, can be controlled by amount and kind of powder used, and pressure can be controlled by using rupture disks of different thickness. While the explosion vessel used was not designed so that temperature and pressure could be measured, in other vessels of closely similar size and shape containing proportionate charges of the same kind of powder as that used for standard testing procedure, values of 2700°K and 50,000 psi were obtained. Since the orifices past the flat areas on the plug are small compared to the rupture disk hole (I:I6), most of the gas goes out through the rupture disk when it breaks. The amount that goes by the plug depends on (I) the pressure attained before the rupture disk breaks and (2) the time it takes for this pressure to be built UP. Trail blasters for the National Park Service (NPS) live and work in remote mountain terrain throughout the western states, where any support or resupply may be sporadic and ditlicult and mountain weather affects every activity. Mechanical “aids” are the pick, shovel, rock-bar, wheelbarrow, and a Pionjar or Cobra dritl. The blaster is usually faced with an extraordinary range of work, t?om delay blasts in weathered rock using driiole depths of 18” (46cm) to as little as 4” (1 Ocm), through reducing boulders and talus fields to useable tread, blasting stumps, snags and log-jams, to the explosive disintegration and casting of animal czcasses. One day he/she might provide a 500cf (14 cu meter) anchor excavation for a suspension bridge, the next day directionally fall 60” (1.5m) diameter snags in a camp area, and the following day blast a 3-foot-wide (1 meter) tread bench across a steep bedrock slope. To be effective, the blaster must design each and every blast around desired end result, crew and public safety, maximizing effective use of limited quantities of explosive, and the minimnation of environmental effects. Since almost all drillhole blasting occurs in the weathered zone of the rock, blasting is more the art than the science of judging rock density, hardness, cohesion and prefracturing, and selecting explosives, drill and delay patterns, and loading techniques responsive to those conditions. For these reasons the NPS issues its own Blaster’s License, with a basic requirement of at least 40 hours of NPS blaster training and 3 years of supervised Blaster in-Training experience. The focus of this pre-license requirement is on safety and using explosives as a precision tool, versus just “blowing things up”.

The ever increasing demand for energy and the progressive depletion of crude oil resources, have renewed interest in oil shale as an alternative fuel resource. Weathered oil shale samples were assembled from El-Nakheil phosphate mine in Quseir area, Eastern desert, Egypt. The oil shale samples were prepared and analyzed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometry), and optical microscopic techniques. Rock-Eval pyrolysis and total organic carbon were used to study shale hydrocarbon potential. A leaching procedure using inorganic and organic acids was used to selectively dissolve the oil shale associated ash forming minerals. XRD results showed that calcite is the dominant carbonate mineral, whereas primary silicate minerals are quartz and montmorillonite. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observations indicated that the organic matter is dispersed throughout the rock matrix. The acid soluble fraction upon leaching was determined to be 37.59 and 42.74 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. The TOC was increased from 20.78 to 29.88 and 34.09 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. In the 1940's a top blown water-cooled oxygen lance was developed to inject oxygen into liquid iron. This process, the LD or BOF process technique, today is used in 65% of the world's steel production, and represents the largest oxygen market for temperature enhancement in steel and non-ferrous smelting applications. There are three major approaches to the use of oxygen in metallurgical processes: (1) general enrichment of the air supplied to burners or tuyeres, (2) under-flame enrichment or injection, and (3) the use of an auxiliary oxy-fuel burner as a heat source. With each of these techniques there are technical and economic trade-offs.

AS a result of the study of social problems to which so much thought has been given in this country and Europe in the last half century, many employers of labor have come to think that some provision should be made for their workingmen in case of injury. There has been a growing tendency so to administer the laws governing industrial pursuits in these countries as to add self-interest on the part of capitalists, to the plea urged by humanity, that every possible care should be taken to guard the workers from accident; but as no care can guarantee immunity, there is a necessity to supplement these precautions by some method of providing pecuniary aid that shall be available when disabling accidents do occur. It was once a favorite idea of theorists on political economy, that in the ideal state of society every man should take care of himself, and that the less care or control there was assumed by any man over others' private affairs, the better; but this gospel of selfishness has had its day, and it is now generally recognized that in the existing state of affairs the stronger and richer cannot escape the duty of being to some extent, the keepers of their less fortunate brethren ; and, on the other hand, that an assumption of care for them involving to some extent an exercise of authority, is not a thing to he necessarily and always resisted. With blasting operations moving ever closer to residential properties, the number of complaints about air overpressure is beginning to increase. It is therefore important for operators not only to have a greater understanding of the blasting parameters that give rise to air overpressure but also the factors which have an effect on air overpressure levels as it attenuates with increasing distance from the location of the blast.

An experimental induration facility has been developed and used for conducting iso- thermal tests and plant simulation studies on the thermal induration of iron ore pellets. The influence of time, temperature, lime content, ore type, shale content and particle-size dis- tribution (e.g. Blaine Index) is being studied in a continuing programme. The present paper deals with experiments relating to the first three of these parameters and illustrates the use of an experimental design suitable for statistical analysis. The relations between isothermal data and the results of complete simulation rests are discussed.

Roof supports can only be understood in conjunction with the rock structure that they support. The strength of the rock depends on geology, and the loads are applied primarily by the in situ and mining-induced stresses. Other factors, such as wider spans and retreat or multiple-seam mining, can also reduce the stability of mine openings. Roof supports are used to help stabilize these openings, but their performance characteristics must be properly matched to the loading environment and ground behavior if they are to succeed. Roof supports include both intrinsic supports, such as roof bolts, and standing supports. The key characteristics of any support include its maximum load-carrying capacity, stiffness, and residual strength. Other important factors are the timing of installation, the stability of the support as it is loaded, and the capability of the support system to provide skin control. This paper explains in practical terms how supports work and the important factors in ensuring that a good support design and application strategy are developed.

BELOW the nose of the bainitic C curves in isothermal transformation diagrams, the rate of the austenite-to-bainite transformation usually decreases with decreasing temperature. However, in some steels and iron-carbon alloys, there is a noticeable acceleration in the initial reaction rate at temperatures just above Ms. Such speeding-up of the bainitic transformation would be understandable at temperatures just below Ms because of the catalytic effect of the martensite formed,' but the reversal in isothermal kinetics just above Ms seems quite anomalous. This behavior was observed by Howard and Cohen' in a 1.35 pct C steel and, on the basis of metallo-graphic examination, it was attributed to the formation of a thin plate-like product not belonging in the bainitic sequence. More recently, schaaber2 found two-stage reactions occurring in the vicinity of Ms in a number of steels, and suggested that the first stage might be the isothermal formation of marten-site, preceding the isothermal formation of bainite in the second stage. The demands of the petroleum and chemical industries for steels to be used in pressure vessels and similar structures at artificially low temperatures are continually increasing, and the writing of proper specifications with suitable tests becomes increasingly important. Likewise, the selection of suitable steels for such applications is of increasing concern to the metallurgist. It is generally recognized that highly alloyed steels of the austenitic stainless type retain their properties even at very low temperatures and represent the best technological solution of the low-temperature steel problem. However, in many instances less expensive carbon or low-alloy steels suitable for service within limited temperature ranges are available. The problem thus becomes one of defining the various factors involved in the production and fabrication of these less expensive steels and determining the temperature ranges in which their properties justify engineering application. Most of the applications involve welded structures, and the heat effect of welding as well as the nature of the weld metal are matters of prime concern. The first problem that the metallurgist faces is the determination of the type of test to be used as a criterion of the performance of the steel in low-temperature service. It has been generally recognized that the static properties of steel as determined in the ordinary tensile test undergo a gradual and relatively slight change as the temperature of test is lowered in the range of current interest; i.e., from room temperature to minus 120' C. It is further generally recognized that the behavior of steel under impact involving notch sensitivity is definitely affected at the lower temperatures. While the major subject of this paper is the effect of grain-refining deoxidizers, of low-alloy additions and of welding on the low-temperature notched-bar impact properties, an inquiry into the general behavior of steel under low-temperature impact testing is included. The National Coal Resource Assessment – 2000 project was a multi-year effort by the U.S. Geological Survey to identify, characterize, and assess the coal resources that will supply a major part of the Nation’s energy needs during the 21st century. The purpose of the USGS National Coal Resource Assessment (NCRA) was to (1) digitally assess selected coal beds and zones that will be the most important in the next few decades, (2) create publically available stratigraphic, geochemical, and geographic information system (GIS) databases to answer a variety of questions of importance to government, industry and public decision makers, and (3) provide interpretive geologic and geochemical information for the primary coal resources of the Nation. Five priority regions were assessed: the Appalachian Basin, Illinois Basin, Gulf Coast, Illinois Basin, and Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. The NCRA was a cooperative effort between the USGS and a number of State geological surveys in these coal-bearing regions. A study of coal resources on Federal lands was also conducted. Adequate energy supplies and the efficient use of those supplies are critical to the economic well being of a country. Affordable and reliable coal supplies are essential to the interests of our national and local policymakers. Policy makers require a range of information on the energy supply, as well as the economic and environmental issues associated with that energy source and its use. Formulation of an effective national energy policy and development of energy resources requires that we understand the geology, distribution, quality, and size of the national energy endowment.

"LET ME FIRST OF ALL thank you for sending this invitation to me to participate in this Annual Meeting of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia. As an engineer, although I don't get an opportunity to practice very much engineering these days, I am, of course, always pleased to be able to meet with my fellow engineers to exchange views, but I must admit that today I feel a little bit out of place in the midst of all the experts that are here today. Let me make one thing clear - I'm a generalist! Your program states that I am to make a keynote address. I have always thought that a keynote speech is one that says something that has not been said before - announces some new program or policy, or says something startling. I am sure you will understand when I tell you that keynote addresses are made by politicians and that civil servants speaking publicly are usually expected to give an account of what is, or what is likely, to happen as a result of policies that have been announced in keynote speeches by politicians. I am reminded of a statement by a distinguished parliamentarian who said, ""However exalted a civil servant may be, he is not above the elected officials."" So today I will confine myself to giving you an overview with particular emphasis on the development side of oil and gas. The theme of ""Oil and Gas"" is a topical one these days. I suppose it's because of all the copy that is being generated by the media on the U.S. energy crisis, the Mid-East situation, the fact that most of the world's proven oil reserves are in Arab hands and, of course, the accelerated exploration activity that is taking place in the North Sea, in the Arctic, and off the coast of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia."
