Controlled recirculation of ventilation air in underground metal and nonmetal mines has the potential to improve airflow and the health and safety of miners when implemented properly. Previous research by Robinson, Marks, Cecala and others concluded that the success of a district recirculation system is predicated upon an adequate supply of fresh air and the use of a reliable monitoring system for safe operation. This recent research also showed that contaminant levels will not exceed pre-recirculation levels, and that district recirculation can improve the dilution of face contaminants, especially methane gas. To illustrate the process of implementing controlled recirculation and also to promote and give guidance to mine operators in consideration of this tool to improve mine airflow, Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) researchers acquired baseline airflow and contaminant data from a multi-level room-and-pillar nonmetal mine and used commercial ventilation network software to simulate base case conditions and recirculation of mine air. Mine return air baseline contaminants of dust and diesel particulate matter were at lower levels than intake air, providing the potential for improved face air quality. A ventilation model implementing controlled recirculation was developed and analyzed, showing an increase in air quantity at the face, improved intake air quality, and contaminant exposure levels below those set by statutory requirements. These results, along with conclusions reached by previous researchers, provide the basis for examining the safe and effective implementation of controlled recirculation in metal and nonmetal underground mines using this mine as an example.

TRENCHING, sampling, and core drilling in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., by the Bureau of Mines have delimited over 5,000,000 tons of chromite ore containing more than 20 per cent chromic oxide. The Benbow and Mouat-Sampson mines have been developed and are fully equipped for mining and milling 500 tons and 2000 tons a day, respectively.

The thiosulfate lixiviant system for leaching of gold has been under extensive investigation for nearly two decades and consists of ammonium thiosulfate, copper and ammonia. There are several challenges with this system. The occurrence of ammonia must be taken into account from a health and hygiene aspect in the workplace, and also from an environmental perspective with significant levels of ammonia and copper in the tailings. Copper accelerates the leaching rate but causes excessive thiosulfate degradation. A new lixiviant system that has been investigated consists only of sodium thiosulfate without copper and ammonia. Gold leaching is carried out in an enclosed reactor with slightly elevated oxygen overpressure and temperature. Extensive leaching experiments were carried out to minimize thiosulfate degradation and polythionate formation while maximizing the gold extraction. For the preg-robbing carbonaceous ore sample tested, gold leaching was essentially complete within six hours and the thiosulfate consumption was lower than in the typical ammoniacal thiosulfate system. The gold thiosulfate complex in the pregnant leach solution was found to be quite stable under ambient conditions. This new leaching system has the advantages of being more environmentally friendly, has a shorter residence time, lower thiosulfate consumption, lower oxygen consumption, and is easier to control.

"Block caving is one of the most economical and efficient underground mining methods and has gained popularity around the world especially for extracting low grade and massive ore bodies. However, during the extraction of ore from the draw bells, gases trapped inside the cave could emit into the working areas; hence, ventilation plays a key role in operating block cave mines successfully where gas emission is a concern. To design an effective ventilation system for a block caving mine, given the dynamic nature of the caving process, it is necessary to develop airflow characteristic curves (P-Q) for a given cave. This study uses a 1:100 scale physical model with an exhaust fan system, and a Computational Fluid Dynamics model of a block cave to investigate the airflow behavior through the cave filled with broken rock material. From this study, it was observed that the cave airflow resistance increases with the decrease in cave porosity and the particle size.INTRODUCTIONThe block cave mining method is gaining popularity owing to its low cost and high productivity. This study considered a case where this bulk mining method is used for the extraction of an orebody that contains uranium mineralization. During the extraction of broken ore from the draw bells, radioactive gases trapped in the cave zone could be released into the production drifts and could create unsafe working conditions in the mine. Mine ventilation systems play an important role in regulating the migration of radon in working areas. One of the strategies to control radon migration in a block cave mine is to exert negative pressure on the cave zone by using an exhaust fan above the cave zone. In order to select an appropriate exhaust fan system, it is necessary to study the airflow resistance of the cave zone (Loring & Nelson, 2006).Extraction of broken ore via drawpoints creates a void volume inside the cave called the air gap. Air gaps with larger heights can lead to air blasts in a block cave mine should the cave collapse. Besides that, the air gap can also lead to decrease in ventilation system efficiency due to recirculation of air flow and associated shock losses. Air gap height can also have a profound effect on the variation of cave airflow resistance (Erogul et al., 2015, 2017). The knowledge of cave airflow resistance is also important for predicting the intensity of an air blast. Cave airflow resistance is a function of cave properties such as broken rock size, air gap, and porosity inside the cave zone (Baysal et al., 2017). Initially, a scaled experimental model with a forcing system was developed to investigate the airflow behavior through the cave, however, this model couldn’t provide an observable change in the airflow resistance when the cave properties were changed (cave porosity, and airgap) This was attributed to the difficulties associated with forcing system in terms of achieving lower porosity values with the available material (lightweight shipping boxes) for simulating broken rock inside the cave zones, and controlling air leakage from the model (Ajitha et al., 2018)."

COAL EXPLORATION Coal exploration may be defined as the acquisition of data necessary to define and acquire a block of coal which can be mined at a profit. Unlike ore minerals, coal resources are widespread and relatively abundant with supply exceeding demand in almost every case. Thus simple discovery of coal is generally not enough. The chemical and physical variability of individual coal seams, the capital intensive nature of coal mine development, and the changing patterns of utilization require that a multiphase, three-dimensional evaluation be made of each potential reserve. Factors which must be investigated include not only the quantity and quality of the coal but also the geologic, hydrologic, and engineering characteristics of the seam and its surrounding strata. Acquisition of property to provide a secure base for exploration and mine development is equal in importance to the geologic and engineering programs. The successful development of a coal reserve requires that control of coal and, in the case of a strip mine, the surface be in the form of contiguous blocks of sufficient size to support mining. PHASES OF EXPLORATION The high capital risks of coal exploration and land acquisition dictate that a multiphase program be utilized to minimize initial risk. In such a program, phased development of the data insures that each increase in capital expenditures will be justified by a corresponding increase in the level of confidence in the ultimate success of the project. Each phase is designed to provide sufficient data and property control to facilitate the decision whether to proceed to the next phase of development or to discontinue the program (Table 1). High titania slag is produced by the smelting of ilmenite and a suitable carbonaceous reductant in electric furnaces. Currently liquid slag is cast into large blocks, which take about 10 days to cool down before they can be crushed, milled and classified into two final products. The two products, chloride and sulphate grade slag, are differentiated according to their size. Granulation of titania slag has been identified as a possible alternative to the conventional block route. This paper discusses some of the work carried out at Exxaro Research and Development to investigate both wet and dry granulation of titania slag.

Resue or split face firing has the potential to separate ore and waste rock into separate muck piles within a stope. Thus split face firing has the potential to reduce dilution of the ore stream to be transported to the surface for subsequent processing. It also potentially reduces the total amount of broken rock needing to be transported out of the mine as the waste material is physically separated from the ore as part of the blasting process. Waste can therefore be used directly from the stope to backfi ll other mining areas. This paper reports on the results of split face firing trials at the Hillgrove mine in NSW and analyses the results of these blasts.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating longwall panel and gate road layouts to increase coal recovery and reduce multiple-seam interactive problems. This report presents design practices for longwall mining multiple seams to provide mine planners and operators with practical guidelines for designing productive longwall mines. Key aspects of mine design that control longwall interactions are examined, including sequencing of seams, design of gate road pillars, and orientation of gate roads and longwall panels. Theories that describe stress transfer between multiple scams and the mechanics of interaction are addressed in relation to geology. Common longwall designs were further investigated using a boundary element model, MULSIM/NL. The model provided insight into relative stress transfer and distribution that occurs between longwall operations in multiple seams. Findings from the model show that (1) a longwall panel should be mined from the gob to the solid coal of an overlying mine, because the stress concentrations are lower; the approach angle should be kept under 30°; and (2) when mining in descending order, superpositioning gate roads usually produces the worst stress condition. To prevent this, the overlying isolated gate roads should be positioned from the centerline toward the headgate side of the underlying panel.

Mechanism of the action of nonpolar physically adsorbed reactants in froth flotation is under discussion in the paper. It is shown that their basic influence on flotation includes removing of the kinetics restrictions of the flotation complex formation. Experimental data and practical evidence reported in the paper sustain the proposed mechanism. There are discussed potential dependence of the kinetics of dixanthogen formation on platinum and its influence on the induction time (IT).

"The Jasper Gold mine in northern Saskatchewan produced a total mill feed of 140 127 tonnes at an average grade of 19.0 g/t Au. Both diamond drilling and chip samples from underground workings returned extremely high values, up to 12851 g/t (375 oz/T) Au over 0.10 meter from a chip sample. In the presence of such extremely high grades, the accurate estimation of reserves is a major problem.In the first part of this study, production data from the mine were used to evaluate the results of a variety of reserve estimation techniques in this environment. In two out of three cases studied, indicator kriging with assays cut to 342.9 g/t (10 oz/T) gave extremely good results. In the third case, however, indicator kriging gave unacceptable results. Instead, lognormal kriging of uncut data gave the best results.Secondly, from the same database, a number of drill-hole spacings were simulated, and reserves estimated from the simulations. As may be expected, the results of this analysis show increasingly better results with tighter drill-hole spacing. However, even with a 5 m by 5 m spacing the variation from actual grade was quite large. This is not a systematic under- or over-estimation of grade, rather a random scatter of results.The results of this study show very clearly the problems of deriving good estimates of reserves when extremely high-grade samples are encountered. There is a high degree of randomness to this data base, so reserve estimation in this situation will remain a high-risk operation."

There is an obvious disproportion in Russia gold-mining industry between the structure of gold reserves and the gold-mining techniques. The bulk of gold (over 70%) is extracted from alluvial deposit, 20%~25% from bedrock occurrences and 5%~7% from complex copper-zinc and polymetallic ores. The proved gold-bearing reserves are distributed as follows: alluvial ?19%, bedrock ?80%, the latter being sufficient to supply gold at the current production level for 100 years to come. In Russia, like elsewhere in the world, development of primary gold deposits is considered a first-priority line of development for gold-mining industry. Most of the gold-containing ores characteristic of Russian gold deposits are resistant ores with gold content varying between 3 ppm and 5 ppm usually showing quite low gold and silver recovery by cyanidation. Processing resistance of gold-containing mineral complexes is related to the presence of gold particles of submicrometric (<1.0 µm) and nanometric (10~100 nm) size, mostly asso-ciated with pyrite and arsenopyrite. Therefore switching over to processing bedrock entails a num-ber of technological problems that stem from chemical and physical resistivity of ores. The chemical resistivity can be overcome through flotation, oxidation roasting, autoclave leaching (biohydro-metallurgical oxidation), etc. The physical resistivity can be dealt with by resorting to traditional power-intensive methods,e.g. grinding to a ?40µm size, thermal treatments of sulphide concentrates and non-traditional high-energy methods of liberating the sulphides by means of power attack, e.g. electro-chemical oxidation, exposure to electron beam radiation and other methods. The modern non-traditional processes for treatment of rebellious noble metal-bearing ore, aimed at improving disintegration efficiency for finely dispersed mineral complexes are analysed. Advantages and perspectives of a new high-efficient, energy-saving and ecologically safe process of the nanosecond high-power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) effect are proved. The said process provides a stable increase in the valuable component recovery at lower energy consumption and production costs of the finite product at the stage of dressing rebellious gold-bearing ores and concentrated products. The experimental data prove high efficiency of the preliminary impulse treatment, thus, the increase in the gold recovery at the cyanidation stage amounted to 4%~12% from rebel-lious ores, 10%~30% from gravity concentrates, 5%~45% from flotation concentrates, 30%~80% from oil flotation tailings.

Unprotected uranium mill tailings impoundments can pose a significant risk to nearby inhabitants and the surrounding environment in the event of a prolonged or catastrophic release of contaminants contained in the tailings. As a result of this potential, reclamation plans for such facilities must include engineering designs to protect against disruption of the tailings and the potential release of radioactive materials. The goals for such engineering designs should be to provide overall site stability for long-term periods with no need for planned ongoing maintenance and to provide a repository for the tailings that will not place a burden on future generations. Although the goal is to provide a maintenance-free system that does not require monitoring, it must be recognized that some period of surveillance would be reasonable. The surveillance period could be relatively short and only needs to assure with reasonable confidence that the reclamation scheme that was implemented is functioning adequately. An investigation was conducted by Nelson, Volpe, Wardwell, Schumm and Staub (1983) entitled Design Considerations for Long-Term Stabilization of Uranium Mill Tailings Impoundments (NUREG/CR-3397). This report assesses the degree of confidence with which long-term reclamation plans can be expected to remain effective over specific periods of time, and to assess the additional effort required to extend the design period from one long-term period to a longer one. This paper presents a summary of that investigation and discusses some of the important conclusions.

AN explosive of balanced composition might be expected, on first consideration, to develop maximum propulsive strength.1 This hypoth¬esis is based on the assumption that an excess of oxygen would act simply as an inert material with a consequent lowering of flame temperature, also that a deficiency of oxygen would tend toward incomplete reaction of the combustible materials, thereby preventing development of the full strength of the explosion. Actually, however, it can be shown both theoretically and experimentally that an explosive having a certain oxygen deficiency will develop the greatest propulsive strength. This fact has been known to the technical staffs of explosives manufacturers for many years, but it has not always been recognized by explosives engineers in the field. For example: There is a fairly widespread opinion that the wrapper of a stick of dynamite is merely a container for the explosive and that it plays little if any part in the development of propulsive strength. Actually, it can be shown that the wrapper enters fairly completely into the explosive reaction. In the case of most gelatin dynamites, a given weight of explosive from which the wrappers have been removed will develop considerably less strength than the same weight of explosive plus wrapper, in spite of the fact that the latter combination contains less weight of the actual explosive ingredient. Vanadium is a transition metal, ductile, silver-gray metal. It is harder than most metals and steels and it has a good resistance to corrosion, it is stable against alkalis, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Vanadium is oxidized in air about 660 °C, although an oxide layer forms even at room temperature. The chemistry of vanadium is noteworthy for the accessibility of the four adjacent oxidation states 2-5. In aqueous solution the colors are lilac V2+, green V3+, blue VO2+ and, at high pH, yellow VO42-. Considered to be as abundant as zinc, metallic vanadium is not found in nature, but it is known to exist in about 65 different minerals. Economically significant examples include patronite (VS4), vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl), associated to the uranium mineral carnotite (K2(UO2)2(VO4)2?3H2O) and in a vanadium mica called, roscoelite K(V3+,Al,Mg)[(Si,Al)4O10](OH)2. Other important vanadium ore oxides are montroseite (V,Fe)O(OH) and corvusite (Na,Ca,K)V8O2.4H2O. Much of the world&apos;s vanadium mine production comes from magnetite-hosted deposit and to a lesser extent, in sedimentary-hosted sandstone. Vanadium is also present in bauxite and in fossil fuel deposits such as crude oil, coal, oil shale and tar sands. In crude oil, concentrations up to 1,200 ppm have been reported. A significant vanadium production comes from the processing of petroleum residues, fly ash and recycling spent catalysts. In 2011, metallurgical applications accounted for 93% of the use of vanadium. Here, an alloy called ferrovanadium is utilized to strengthen steel to be used as rebar in the construction industry, in the manufacturing of axles, crankshafts, gears and chassis in the automotive and transportation industries and in the manufacturing of high-speed tools. In the aerospace industry, vanadium is utilized as a titanium alloy in the manufacturing of airframes and jet engines. The reason for the wide use of vanadium as alloy is its high strength-to-weight ratio, the highest of any engineered material on earth. The major non-metallurgical use of vanadium is in the production of catalysts for the chemical industry. The most commercially important compound is vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), which is used as catalyst in the production of sulfuric acid.

Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimehs, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. "During the past century, the development of vehicular transportation has benefitted tremendously from the performance improvement in engines in a situation where low-cost, plentiful fuel supplies were the order of the day. Engine advances were enhanced by and also dictated fuel modification to better adapt the energy source to the power plant.In discussing the several aspects of the change in approach from ""an engine and its fuel to a fuel and its engine"", the authors touch on the following areas:1. Description of an engine concept that provides the needed flexibility in fuel appetite at good efficiency to cope with future requirement s.2. The constraints placed on liquid fuel resource energy utilization efficiency by special engine-required fuel properties and the fuel efficiency of the various engine types available.3. Future vehicle engine fuel sources. This review will put into perspective the problem associated with the net energy available from future fuel sources under extensive research and development at present.4. A brief review of test data to show that fuel-tolerant and fuel-efficient engines are viable and that, in a fuel-resource-limited future, they can be a ""light at the end of the tunnel.""The Texaco Controlled Combustion System (TCCS)The TCCS is a unique means for stratified charge operation of an internal combustion engine in such a manner as to eliminate the requirement for octane or cetane number specification for the fuel. Octane rating is an empirical engine test method that evaluates a gasoline&apos;s resistance to spontaneous ignition or ""knock."" Cetane is based on a different engine test, which determines a diesel fuel&apos;s ease of spontaneous ignition . High cetane number enhances cold starting and permits high-speed diesel engine operation. As one would expect, the fuels in current use cover a band when the two values, octane and cetane, are plotted against each other."

O diboreto de titânio (TiB2) é um material cerâmico de alta dureza com uma grande potencialidade de aplicação tecnológica. Neste trabalho, foi empregada uma técnica de processamento em altas pressões e altas temperaturas para produzir compactos de TiB2 com AlN. Os pós utilizados foram misturados manualmente em quantidades de 70%p TiB2 + 30%p AlN. Amostras cilíndricas, com 5 mm de diâmetro e 7 mm de altura, foram processadas durante diferentes intervalos de tempo compreendendo os ciclos de sinterização, cada ciclo de sinterização consistiu em aumento de pressão a aproximadamente 7 GPa a uma temperatura aproximada de 1500°C por um tempo de 180 segundos, para cada ciclo. O número de ciclos variou de 1 a 5. O objetivo do trabalho foi a identificação do efeito da quantidade de ciclos sobre a microestrutura e sobre as propriedades mecânicas dos compactos. Para estas observações foram realizadas analises de Difração de Raios X, Microscopia Confocal a Laser, Microdureza Vickers e ensaio de flexão. Os resultados obtidos apresentam perspectiva de utilização do processamento em alta pressão e alta temperatura para produção de compactos de alta qualidade como o TiB2- AlN.

The experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design. Testing Machines The testing machines used were designed by C. E. Weaver;l they are a modification of the White-Souther and McAdam types. Each was driven directly by an individual 1/2-hp. 115-volt direct-current motor, running at a speed of 2200 r.p.m. Fig. 1 shows the assembly drawing and Fig. 2, a photograph of one of the machines. Specimen B is held by the rotating specimen holder A inside the steam box F, which is closed at the top by a tight-fitting, elliptical cover G. The load is applied to the specimen through the rod D and bearing C. E is an oil pipe leading fromthe lubrication system to the bearing C. The steam, which comes from the power house, is admitted through an inlet (not shown in Fig. 1) at the side of the box, the drain being at the bottom. Steam packings were placed around the rod D and the rotating shaft at H, from which the water was drained by means of a vacuum, which usually showed a gage reading of about 10 in. The temperature was measured by a mercury thermometer, and the pressure by a steam gage. Method of Applying Load After the motor has been started and the specimen as a consequence put in rotation, the load is applied by placing the foot pedal A (Fig. 2) in contact with electromagnet B, the winding of which is connected electrically in series with the motor. In 1892 I tested an ore, which was peculiarly difficult to treat, on several concentrators then in general use, including t,he Frue-vanner, the Luhrig table and the Cornish buddle. Owing to the character of the ore it had to be crushed- to a very fine state of division, and the results obtained were far from satisfactory; a large proportion of the values was lost in the slimes, which indicated the necessity of a very careful sizing before dressing. Even after reworking some of the slime-tailings, the results, in my opinion, were not as good aa those which might be obtained on a table designed more especially for the handling of slime.
