WHEN the A.I.M.E. was formed 75 years ago the bituminous coal industry was in its swaddling clothes, although it had been operating for more than a century and coal was being mined in every state now producing it, and its output had long passed that of anthracite. In 18/1, the value of bituminous coal was about seventy per cent of the value of all metals produced and more than one fifth of the value of all products of mines, both metallic and nonmetallic.[1a] While many of the operating mines then shipped by rail, most of the development was along waterways, although the canal era of transportation was nearly at its end. Coal mining is a heavy industry and one of the best measures of its progress is its output throughout the period. Fig. 1 shows this graphically from 1800 to 1945. From 1870 to 1910, the production-which is very nearly the consumption-almost doubled every decade, a most amazing growth. In 1918, in World War I, a peak was reached and a decline began, which ended in 1932. A gradual recovery then started, interrupted in 1938 but culminating in the record output of 1944, when, owing to World War II, a tonnage of 619,576,000 was produced. It is evident that the forces leading to the continuous increase ending in 1918 have spent themselves and that only unusual conditions will require so large a production again. "The height of a fractured zone due to high-intensity mining (HIM) plays a vital role in the safety analysis of coal mining under bodies of water. This paper described the characteristics of HIM. The processes of overburden failure transfer (OFT) are analyzed. The state of destruction transfers from a certain stratum to the upper stratum as face advance distance increases, and the processes of OFT are divided into two stages: transmission development stage and transmission termination stage. Through theoretical analysis, the limited suspension-distance and limited overhanging distance of each stratum are proposed to judge the damage of each layer. Based on this, the OFT criteria of fractured zone development are obtained. The mechanical model of strata suspended integrity and overhanging stability are established. Finally, a new method to predict the height of fractured zone due to HIM is put forward based on the processes of OFT, the limited suspension-distance, and the limited overhanging distance. Further, a HIM panel in the Datong coal mine is taken as an example. Theoretical methods are proposed, and engineering analogy is used to predict the height of the fractured zone, which is compared with in-situ measurements reported in the literature. The results show that the in-situ measurements for the height of the fractured zone are in close agreement with the theoretical calculation result. Therefore, the rationality and reliability of the theoretical method proposed to predict the height of fractured zone is verified.INTRODUCTIONThe height of the fractured zone (HFZ) due to the exploitation of coal is a key parameter for the safety analysis of coal mining under a body of water (Wenbing, Youfeng, and Hou, 2012). "The support pressure of a slurry shield corresponds to the in situ earth and groundwater pressure to ensure the stability of the tunnel face. The support fluid (bentonite suspension) penetrates from the excavation chamber into the pore space and transfers the support pressure to the granular structure of the soil within this zone. At the same time, the cutting tools rotate periodically with the cutting wheel and remove the penetrated soil up to a certain cutting depth at the face. Shortly after the tool passing, the penetration process starts again. Both, the support pressure and the soil excavation, act in the same direction at the tunnel face, but they are subject to different cyclic intervals. This relationship between the time needed for the transient penetration process and the interval of the cyclic passage of the cutting tools at a local point at the face is examined and the impact onto the global face stability is discussed. INTRODUCTION Slurry shields are usually deployed for excavations in soft ground. The main application range is in non-cohesive soils (DAUB Recommendations 2010). In non-cohesive granular soils, the tunnel face stability is one of the key design issues. The slurry shields make use of pressurized bentonite suspension (slurry) to support the unstable tunnel face. To support the tunnel face effectively, the slurry pressure has not only to counter the groundwater pressure, but also has to be transferred into an effective stress to support the soil grains. In general, the pressure transfer can be achieved in two ways: (1) with a thin flexible membrane or (2) a penetration zone. The membrane (1), called filter cake, creates a thin impermeable layer from bentonite particles directly on the tunnel face, and enables a transformation of excess slurry pressure into effective stress. In case of penetration zone formation (2), the excess slurry pressure is transferred onto the soil skeleton along the entire penetration depth by shear stresses between slurry and soil grains. These theories, presently applied to assess the pressure transfer on the grains within slurry shield tunnelling, are originating from diaphragm wall technology, e.g. Müller-Kirchenbauer (1977), Kilchert and Karstedt (1984). They assume that the support pressure transfer mechanism is built-up instantaneously on the whole tunnel face and is not damaged or influenced by the interaction with excavation tools. These assumptions are valid for conditions during the excavation of diaphragm wall trenches whose bottom is excavated and the walls of the trench are supported. At the tunnel face of a slurry shield, the support suspension acts on the same area as the soil excavation. Hence, the conditions on the tunnel face are transient (time dependent) due to the time period needed for the penetration process of the slurry and the periodical damage of the pressure transfer mechanism by excavation tools (Fig. 1a)."

"Bubble size distribution, bubble rise velocity and gas and solids hold-up are the key major hydrodynamic parameters that are extensively used for column flotation design and performance evaluation. The distribution characteristics of mean gas hold-up is studied using electrical resistance tomography (ERT) coupled with pressure transducers (PT) in column flotation. The ERT technique facilitates non-invasive and nonintrusive visualization of different flow regimes even in the presence of particles in a column flotation. The effect of superficial gas velocity, feed flow rate and slurry height in the column on mean gas hold-up and its radial distribution has been analysed for both two-phase and three phase flows. Experimental results show ERT coupled with PT is suitable as an online monitoring tool to provide useful information on the three-phase flow hydrodynamic parameters of the column flotation. The tomography images, which were generated using a modified sensitivity back projection algorithm, are employed to explore the influence of parameters in two phase flow in column flotation. Mean gas and solids hold-up values extracted from ERT have been critically analysed for the column operating in various flow regimes. Gas hold-ups and solid hold-ups results using ERT are in very good agreement with conventional estimation and correlations obtained using pressure transmitter methods. Meanwhile, the results show that the gas hold-ups in the centre region increase constantly with an increase in the superficial gas velocity, whereas solid hold-ups distribution is very heterogeneous for high gas velocity. Furthermore, the results also indicate that ERT is a very powerful tool for diagnosing the 'inside' flow behaviour of gas –liquid–solid three phase flow in columns operating for a wide range of flow regimes.INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation is perhaps the most significant technological innovation in flotation machinery and its successful introduction in mineral processing plants. There has been a lot of attention in understanding the various mechanisms that take place during operation. Due to many reasons column flotation has been found to yield better performance than conventional flotation cells, particularly with fine particles (Honaker & Mohanty, 1996). Due to complex flow behavior in nature, the performance of column flotation influenced by on flow characteristics of the process, (Jena, Biswal, Das, & Reddy, 2008). Previously basic research is carried out to evaluate the effect of the hydrodynamic parameters on performance of column flotation (Finch, J.A.;Dobby, 1991). Many techniques have been developed that could be used to experimentally analyse the hydrodynamics of column flotation. Tomography techniques are well sound to investigate the hydrodynamics for process equipment. Among that, Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) has been used in various industrial investigations for visualization of the concentration profiles and characteristics of the fluid dynamics in gas–liquid two-phase systems (Wang, Dickin, & Mann, 1999; Williams, R.A; Wang, 2000). ERT is an imaging technique to analyse the internal flow behavior non-intrusively. ERT provide very useful tools for measuring and monitoring of column flotation process on line. Due to its high speed capability, low cost measurement, robust sensors, ERT is considered to be the most powerful tool among other tomography techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), optical and infrared tomography. Application of ERT has extended in process systems due to its improved speed of data acquisition, sensitivity, flexibility and noise immunity. In multiphase flow of bubble columns, gas hold-up and solid hold-up are explored by using the coupling of ERT and difference pressure method (Jin, Han, Yang, & He, 2010)."

Meridian Gold Company's Royal Mt. King mine (RMK), a subsidiary of FMC Gold Company, is located approximately 40 miles east of Stockton, California on the western edge of the historic mother lode belt. Gold ore at RMK is associated with a series of northwest trending fault zones hosted in either meta-volcanic or meta-sedimentary rock types commonly referred to as greenstone sulfide and carbonaceous phyllite. Mineralogy studies show gold in both ore types to occur primarily as electrum in the form of 1 -20 um inclusions in pyrite with varying amounts of free milling gold. In carbonaceous ores, gold was not found to be closely associated with carbon. At the start of the current mining operation, three major ore resources were identified. North Pit and Gold Knoll pits were the major greenstone reserves while Skyrocket Pit contained over 60% of the total reserves as carbonaceous ore. Since North Pit and Gold Knoll were to be the first areas mined, the mill began operation in February 1989 with a flowsheet designed for greenstone ores with a carbonaceous expansion anticipated after depletion of the greenstone reserves.

This past spring of 2006, BENCOR installed the concrete reinforced diaphragm walls for the COSMOPOLITAN RESORT & CASINO in Las Vegas, Nevada. The project highlights include the excavation of approx. 326.000 square feet of reinforced diaphragm slurry wall with a thickness of 30 inches and a depth of 100 feet using three reverse circulation trench cutters (hydromills) at the same time. The reinforcing steel cages were fabricated on the 8 acre jobsite and approximately 12,000 cubic yards of 4500 psi concrete was placed via tremie. The jobsite logistics of coordinating three trench cutters and three separate desanding/slurry plants as well as the reinforcing steel fabrication and concrete placement all under a very tight schedule was quite challenging. A second main exercise was the execution of a temporary excavation support. As the excavation depths extends between 66 and 72 feet, five to six rows of temporary tieback anchors were required. Anchor lengths range from 43 -83 feet at a maximum design load of 235 kips.

Several major routes connecting Northern and Southern Europe or Asia run through Austria. These highways have to surmount the alpine range which traverses Austria from west to east. In order to ensure safe driving conditions even in winter, tunnels, at times quite long ones, are necessary. Austria now has tunnels totalling 160 km in length. These tunnels are either already in use or just about completed. The Plabutsch tunnel near Graz will be one of the longest tunnels in the world: approximately 10 kilometers in length. It will be put into operation in the summer of 1987. Before construction could begin, soil and rock conditions had to be investigated by means of a test tunnel. Afterwards, excavation was begun to the full 100 m' cross section. The new Austrian tunnelling method with conventional blasting was used for the major part of the tunnel. It was necessary to have such a large tunnel cross section because a fully transverse ventilation system is installed for environmental reasons. In order to avoid air pollution from the tunnel, exhaust fumes are not allowed to escape from the tunnel portals but from two shafts, each with a diameter of 8.5 m. In this way, exhaust fumes must rise 90 meters or 240 meters before they reach the open air and will thus not affect the city. The ventilation system influences the size of the excavation, and especially the size of the ventilation caverns and the air shafts. All these factors directly influence construction and maintenance costs, and an economical optimisation leads to the appropriate dimensions for the excavation.

Handling and transport of coal during the winter months can be a severe problem. The inability to unload frozen coal from rail cars produces serious economic and logistic problems due to transportation delays, rail car shortages, and demurrage on the rail cars. One method of dealing with the problem of unloading frozen coal has been to spray freeze conditioning agents onto the coal before it is loaded into rail cars. Both water soluble and oil based formulations have been used as freeze conditioning agents. The water soluble treatments generally contain a polyhydroxy alcohol, such as ethylene glycol, or salts of alkaline earth metals, such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, as freeze point depressants. The oil based treatments consist principally of hydrocarbons, such as No. 2 oil or diesel fuel. The authors' tests have shown significant differences in the effectiveness of these freeze conditioning agents, depending on the particular coal substrate being treated. These differences correlate with the coal porosity and inherent moisture of the substrate. In general, the greater the porosity of the coal, the smaller the effect of the freeze conditioning agents. Coal porosity has a greater impact on water soluble freeze conditioning agents than oil based products. The authors investigated the pore structure of a variety of coals using mercury intrusion. Findings were related to the effectiveness of different freeze conditioning agents as measured by unconfined compression strength tests. In general, coals with a large number of very small pores (between 0.05 µm and 0.03 µm) do not respond as well to freeze conditioning chemicals.

Safety and health professionals from all sectors of industry recognize that training is a critical element of an effective safety and health program. A major concern in the mining industry is how to train both an aging workforce and the expected influx of new miners and mine managers as older workers retire. Thus, a review of some of the basic principles of adult learning may be helpful to mine trainers. This paper discusses the principles of adult learning based on research in education and psychology. It stresses the importance of taking a systems approach to training, focusing on the relationship between the environment and technology, and understanding how workers interact with both. The authors argue that the principles of adult learning and a systems approach are fundamental to the delivery of effective training in the mining industry. Examples of training programs developed by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are presented within two broad performance domains: routine and nonroutine skills. Basics of curriculum development are also briefly presented to provide the mine trainer with a template for program development.

KNOWLEDGE of the Cu-Zn constitution diagram was critically examined in 1944 by G. V. Ray-nor,1 who suggested the diagram reproduced in Fig. 1 as the best evaluation of available data. No pertinent work on the constitution has been published since that time, although a number of authors have discussed transformation kinetics and theory. Despite the large amount of work that has been done on the constitution of these industrially important and scientifically interesting alloys, minor uncertainties still exist. For example, it is still not possible to say definitely whether a two-phase region exists between the ordered and disordered forms of the 8 phase. A careful re-examination of the phase boundaries in this part of the diagram was therefore undertaken. Two methods were selected for the new investigation—quantitative metallography for the higher temperatures and precision lattice parameter measurement for lower temperatures. Because of the relatively narrow two-phase regions flanking the ß phase in these alloys, quantitative metallography is particularly suited for their examination, since the relative amounts of the two phases are very sensitive to their compositions. The method, however, is useless below about 350°C because of the inadequate resolution of the two constituents. Below 400°, however, the X-ray diffraction method is applicable, although it is of somewhat lower sensitivity in this system. The changes of composition that occur during quenching from above about 500°C entirely vitiate X-ray measurements at room temperature though they do not affect metallographic area measurements. The two methods overlap and supplement each other admirably. Both methods depend on the attainment of equilibrium composition of the two phases in a more or less intimate mixture and thus avoid the difficult problems of nucleation and long range diffusion involved in the conventional metallographic bracketing method. The alloys were melted from a master alloy made from re-electrolyzed cathode copper and Horsehead 99.99 pct Zn. Melting was done under a cover of either borax or charcoal and the alloys cast into a 7/8 in. sq graphite mold for the a-ß alloys or a 3/8 in. diam cylindrical graphite mold for the ß-? alloys. The a-ß alloys were rolled at 750°C to 5/8 in. sq; annealed for 24 hr at 800°C and quenched; then rolled and swaged at 200°C to 3/8 in. diam rods, annealed 24 hr at 200°C, quenched and cold rolled 2 pct reduction. This treatment was intended to obtain a small grain size and to produce many nuclei of the minor phase for growth on subsequent heat treatment. The unworkable ß-? alloys were given preliminary treatment by sealing in Vycor tubes in vacuum and annealing for 4 hr at 800°C followed by cooling in air. Samples of homogenized alloys were checked spectrographically for impurities, but the principal components were determined on samples subsequent to heat treatment. The impurities analyzed averaged approximately as follows: Ag, 0.0002 pct; Fe, 0.004; Si, 0.0008; Cd, 0.005; Mg, 0.0002; and Pb, 0.002. For metallography, samples of appropriate composition were cut into rods 5/8 in. long, sealed in pyrex tubes in vacuum and annealed for eight weeks at temperatures of 470°C and below, two weeks at 480°, 500°, and 600°C, and 4 hr at 700°C, followed by quenching in cold water. Temperatures were accurate to ±2°C. The cylinders were then machined to 8.7 mm diam and a slice weighing 1.5 g cut with a thin saw transversely from the center of each. This

"As we head toward the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December, the environment and sustainability will become headline news for a while. Governments are expected to agree to a set of binding targets to reduce carbon emissions probably before 2020, and certainly before 2050. This will, in effect, initiate a low carbon economy in many parts of the world. Sustainability has mainly been rhetoric so far, the exceptions being projects for those looking to the long-term future and not for short-term financial gains.The probabilities and consequences of negative impacts on the environment and on society over the short term and in the long term can be assessed and mitigated, but mitigation often adds cost. Also, we cannot know what technologies will be available, say 1,000 years into the future, which is about 40 generations of our society. It is easier to have a connection with 100 years into the future, which is only about 4 generations. Individuals may have a different sense of sustainability, and place a different value on mitigation, its cost, its importance and its potential impacts.Sustainability means different things to different parties on a construction project. For example, a land developer is likely to have a different view on the design in terms of sustainability than that of the designer. The developer may also likely to be more interested in sustainabiliy if there are tangible economic benefits that might accrue. Achieving sustainability on any project, leads to conflict between competing interests or demands cooperation between the economic and technical sectors involved. The foundations for a building or bridge, by definition, need to interact with the ground whose behaviour cannot be dictated by man. The aims of sustainability are the same as for the building or bridge, both of which are constructed of manmade materials, but it is less clear how they should be achieved. An example is the driven pile that does not produce spoil waste, but is likely to be too noisy to be acceptable in an urban environment. This then begs the question, should the public accept the nuisance of short-term pile driving to achieve a more sustainable foundation? Additionally, the question has to be asked, can the deep foundations industry develop its techniques and products to help make them more acceptable and appropriate more often than is possible now?"

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. We investigate the relationship between corporate financial performance (CFP) and environmental and social performance (CSP) in a sample (n=165) of large, publicly traded U.S. mining and oil and gas firms. Using optimally scaled principal components analysis to generate aggregate measures of CSP strengths and concerns, we find higher concerns are related to higher volatility of unexpected earnings and discount rates. Furthermore, these earnings shocks are more likely to be negative as concerns increase. Decomposing this relationship shows that negative environmental performance dominates proactive environmental management as a driver of unexpected earnings, but proactive community efforts increase the magnitude of earnings shocks. We document some evidence of the strategic use of CSR, with those firms that have greater risk investing more proactively in CSR.

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

The global mining industry is in the process of redefining its activity and purpose in terms of sustainable development. This process is impelling a growing number of companies to engage their stakeholders on environmental and social issues. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have customarily acted as critics of the mining industry's performance. A new relationship between mining companies and NGOs is emerging in the context of sustainable development, ranging from dialogue to joint action. If positive interaction among mining companies and NGOs is to succeed, clear terms of engagement must be articulated, and measurable progress toward achieving both corporate and NW objectives must be demonstrated. The experience of Placer Dome is illustrative of the rewards and challenges of engaging with NGOs.

This paper explains the concept of safety culture, the value of safety culture, as well as the relationships between safety culture and safety behavior, and between safety culture and science and technology. The paper proposes the model of safety culture and the ways to enhance safety culture of coal enterprises. Safety culture and safety production is closely related and are significant to the improvement of mine safety situation in China.

It will then briefly review the testing procedures and finally cover miscellaneous items.

The quarrying and related industries of the United States improved their safety record in 1938 by reducing their accident-frequency rate to a lower acid more favorable position than it has occupied at any time except 1935 since comparable accident statistics became available in 1916. The rates for 1935 and 1938 were identical. The number of men employed in 1938, although smaller than in 1936 and 1937, was larger than in any other year since 1930. Volume of employment, as measured by the number of man-hours worked in the industry as a; whole, likewise was larger than in any year since 1930 except 1936 and 1937. Reports from operating companies to the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, showed that 77,497 men were employed in 1938, a decrease of 6,597 compared with 1937. This figure represents the average number of employees for the period during which the quarries and plants were active during the year, which in 1938 averaged 223 workdays per employee compared with 241 in 1937. A total of 17.3 million man-days or 133.8 million man-hours of work was shown for the industry as a whole, which indicated a weighted average of 7.75 hours per man-shift. Reports for 1937 showed a total of 158.3 million man-hours for the entire industry and an average workday of 7.81 hours. Accidents resulted in the death of 82 employees, 5 more than in 1937, and in 5,027 nonfatal injuries involving disability for more than the remainder of the day on which the injuries were received. The number of nonfatal injuries was 1,321 less than in 1937. As the number of deaths and injuries was reduced more, proportionately, than man-hours of employment, the accident-frequency rate per million man-hours of work declined, the rate for 1938 being 38.19 compared with 40.59 for 1937. In other words, accident occurrence to the average employee was 6 percent more favorable in 1938 than in 1937 on the basis of actual number of accidents and actual number of man-hours worked during the 2 years.

IN the mechanical twinning of magnesium on the {1012} planes the crystallographic deformation is such that, in the direction of the hexagonal axis [0001], twinning is possible only under tension stress, while in the directions perpendicular to the hexagonal axis, twinning is possible only under applied compression. Thus in extruded magnesium and magnesium alloys where the extruded textures are best described as either [1010] or [ 1120] fibers,1 the basal planes are all nearly parallel to the extrusion axis and such material is susceptible to {1012 } twinning by compression in the direction of the extrusion axis. In order to explain the results of cyclic stressing in alternate tension and compression upon the tangent elastic modulus in such material, Dorn and Thomsen2 have postulated that, following twinning under applied compression, a retwinning or untwinning occurs as a result of residual microtensile stresses immediately upon removal of the applied compressive force. Recently, Carapella and Shaw3,4 have used this supposition of untwinning in magnesium in discussing their results on indentation hardness and on cold drawing of MI sheet. In trying to confirm this hypothesis by suitable direct experiments, the authors have been unsuccessful in detecting any evidence whatsoever that untwinning follows the release of applied compression and are forced to conclude that this hypothesis is improbable or, at least, that the quantity of material involved is small. For the experiments, small cylindrical specimens 0.040-in. diam. X 0.120- to 0.140-in. long were etched from 0.0625-in. extruded rod. The ends of the specimens were accurately faced off parallel in a jeweler's lathe. The compression jig was simply an ordinary set of micrometer calipers with an anvil interposed between the spindle and the specimen. The anvil was free to move axially but restrained from rotating so that the rotation of the spindle would not introduce a twisting stress on the specimen. With this arrangement the compressive strains could be estimated to 0.0001 in. and X ray pinhole photographs could be taken with or without load as required. Fig 1 is the pattern of an uncompressed specimen of AZ31 alloy, showing the approximate [1010] extrusion fiber. The X ray beam is normal to the extrusion axis; in this position it is particularly sensitive in detecting twinning if one directs his attention to the diffraction ring from the basal plane. Since twinning on {1012} planes produced an 86° reorientation of the crystal lattice, the original basal reflections occur at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions while the (0002) reflections from any twinned material will occur at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. Fig 2 shows the same specimen compressed 3.0 pct, photographed while still under load. This strain has been just enough to produce a detectible amount of twinning and the sensitivity is roughly indicated by the fact that no alterations were produced in the intensities or maxima of the other diffraction rings.
