The Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) concept being developed by Argonne National Laboratory is based on the pyrometallurgical processing of spent nuclear metallic fuel with subsequent fabrication into new reactor fuel by an injection casting process. During fabrication, a dilute scrap stream containing uranium alloy fines and broken quartz (Vycor) molds is produced. Waste characterization of this stream, developed by using present operating data and chemical analysis, was used to evaluate different uranium recovery methods and possible process variations for the return of the recovered metal. Two methods, comminution with size separation and electrostatic separation, have been tested and can successfully recover over 94% of the metal. Recycling the recovered metal to the injection casting process was evaluated for the different economic and process impacts. The physical waste parameters and the important separation process variables are discussed relative to their effects on the viability of recycling the material. A discussion of the criteria that is being used to establish the acceptable operating limits is also presented.

In 1929, Coleman, Wilde, and Moore1 undertook an investigation of the theoretical decline in reservoir pressure as related to the production of oil and gas. The most important part of this work was presented in an equation defining the relationship between the reservoir pressure, the quantities of oil and gas produced, the oil and gas content of the reservoir, and the properties of the reservoir fluids. With this equation, it appeared that, with sufficient data, it would be possible to calculate the oil content of the reservoir and predict quantitatively the effect of gas-oil ratio on the decline of reservoir pressure. Needless to say, such an expression would be highly important in evaluating fields and in arriving at a choice of production methods to be used. Unfortunately, at the time these investigators published their work, there were not sufficient data available to permit application of the equation. The technique of measuring reservoir pressures had not been developed, gas measurements were uncommon, oil and water production records were in most cases inadequate, and little was known of the properties of the complex hydrocarbon mixtures making up the oil and gas in the reservoirs. For these reasons, little additional work of a similar nature could be done. However, during the past four years many data have been systematically accumulated on reservoir pressures and the properties of oil and gas, and it is now possible to use these data in furthering the studies on the behavior of oil and gas reservoirs. It is the purpose here: first, to present the derivation of a modified form of the equation given by Coleman, Wilde and Moore, which will permit the calculation of what later will be defined as the "active oil" content of a reservoir; second, to derive formulas for calculating the reservoir-energy changes that occur during the course of production, and finally, to discuss the limitations and application of the equations developed.

Study area is located on the NorthWestern of Yatagan-Yenikoy and placed in the units of the crystaline Menderes massif of Eagen, Turkey. Stratigraphically gneissic, migmatitic and metagranitic rocks are found at the base. Garnet schists, phyllitic rocks lie unconfirmitelly upon the basement rocks. Permian aged marbles can be observed as diferrent sized lenses within the schists. Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous aged gray colored dolomites and pure crystaline calcite bearing marbles lie upon the Permian aged schists. Neogen series, mainly composed of conglomerates, claystones, marl and limestones unconformly cover the other basement series, mentioned above. Pure calcite bearing marble occurances are found at 2 locations in the study area. These are known as Berber Quarry and Kavuk Quarry. Samples numbered as N7, N8, NA from the Berber Quarry, mineralogically composed of Calcite (97-99%)+iron oxide (1-3%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (97,98%), Fe2O3 (0.5-1%), SiO2 (0.025%) N9 and N10, sampled from the Kavuk Quarry-mineralogically composed of Calcite (94,95%)+iron oxide (2-3%)+albite-Quartz (1-2%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (92-93%), SiO2 1.49%, Fe2O3 0.42%. Especially in plastic and paint sector albite and quartz are unwilling minerals due to their hardness. Approximatelly 1/20 of the study area (87.500 km2) contains industrial calcite occurances. Moreover about 100 billion Tons geological, 1.86 billion tons runable (possible) calcite reserve calculated. It can be expected the calcite quality will be increased with depth. During the running stage of the quarries over burden removel and hand sorting processes will positive affect of the quality.

In our mixture at Musconetcong Iron Works we have an exceedingly hard, dense, magnetic ore, which contains some iron pyrites. The sulphur runs from 0.5 to 1.5 per cent. To prepare this ore better for the furnace, and with a view of making a softer iron, we tried roasting the ore in a Gjers kiln. When it worked well, the improvement in the iron was very perceptible ; but the ore was continually sintering and forming scaffolds across the bosh of the kiln.

The continuing development of the nuclear industry in the United States requires a program of waste disposal that insures against the release of large amounts of radioactivity to the environment. This paper describes research on one proposed means of disposal of this waste, that of injection into geologic formations at depth. Nuclear production plant wastes were simulated and injected into samples of sedimentary rock obtained from outcrops, quarries, and deep wells. Changes in the chemical and physical characteristics of the rocks caused by the interaction of ions and suspended particles in the waste solutions with the cementing material and claylike particles in the rock are discussed. Laboratory tests show that nuclear wastes can be injected into many natural porous, permeable geologic formations. Injectivity can be maintained over a longer period by monitoring the ionic balance and particle-size distribution of waste streams. The combination of permeability and porosity with low cation-retention capacity, as exhibited by most sandstones, would satisfy the engineering requirements for the subsurface disposal of nuclear waste. Shales and clays with their low permeability and high cation-retention capacity would make excellent confining formations. The amount of cation retained by sedimentary rocks increases with increasing valence or concentration of the cation or decreasing brine concentration. The use of rock cores as model reservoirs had proved successful in determining some of the parameters that need to be considered in full-scale field disposal of wastes.

The instrumentation, monitoring, and prediction of a major slope failure at the Chuquicamata mine are described. In December 1967, preexisting tension cracks on the south end of the east wall of the mine began to open. Various forms of instru¬mentation were installed for continuous monitoring. These systems included tension crack stakes, crack extensometers, linear extensometers, tape and transit lines, sliding wire contacts, and a seismograph. From the information obtained, the failure date was accurately predicted some five weeks before failure, enabling the mine to reroute truck and rail access; hence, causing a minimal mine shutdown of 21/2 days and preventing any injuries to person or damage to equipment. The shape and form of the sliding mass are analyzed, as are possible modes of failure.

One of the key elements essential to a productive and uninterrupted longwall mining operation is roof control. In several of the Island Creek Coal Company's mining sections, polyurethane has been infused 80 into strata to control severe roof failures in the face and gate entry areas. To date about 50,000 kgs (110,000 lbs) of the chemical have been consumed in a number of applications. Roof-to-floor convergence 60 and differential roof sag have been monitored to determine the need for polyurethane infusion and also to evaluate roof stability following the infusion. Stratascopic observations of the roof formed the basis 40 for confirming the need and also for estimating the required quantities of polyurethane. Both chemical infusion and roof control monitoring techniques have been applied successfully under very adverse roof 20 conditions; substantial production benefits have been realized. Operator acceptance of the system has been very good.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires each mine operator to implement the respirable dust sampling program established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. This program requires frequent sampling of "high-risk" face workers and periodic sampling of other underground workers. Dust samples are collected by the coal mine operator and weighed at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Field Health Group, and the results are processed by the Bureau's Automatic Data Processing Section located in Denver, Colo. This paper presents the system employed by the Bureau to weigh the dust samples and to process and store the data.

The United States is the world's largest consumer of tin and depends entirely upon foreign imports for its major source of supply. Only a small quantity of tin is produced on the North America continent. The advent of the war in Europe in 1939?brought a threat to our foreign sources of supply, and the Congress took steps to forestall shortages of tin and other metals. By authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, passed by Congress in 1939, and subsequent legislation, the Bureau of' Mines ?and Geological Survey conducted investigations of domestic tin deposits. Most of the tin that has been produced in North America came from the Seward Peninsula, Alaska.

"Effect of moisture content must be fully understood for controlling the granule compaction of ceramics. It changes the mechanical behavior of spray-dried granules applied for compaction process, and governs the structure and properties of .ceramics. To understand the time-dependent change in processing, the kinetics was examined for change of moisture content for granules placed in a die and the pressed compacts also. The results were explained in terms of apparent moisture diffusion coefficients. They varied non-linearly with the PVA content in the granules. The results were explained through the non-uniform PVA distribution in the granules.IntroductionMoisture must be controlled in compaction process to produce the green compacts having uniform structure. It affects glass transition temperature of binder and thus the deformation behavior of powder granules under an applied stress. Several studies [1-7] have clarified the effect of moisture content on the compaction behavior of granules and the structure of resultant compacts for both die pressing and cold isostatic pressing (CIP) of pre-formed compacts. In these studies, the moisture contents in the system were equilibrated with the humidity in the atmosphere before compaction. In practice, however, the moisture content in the system may vary with time if the relative humidity of surrounding atmosphere is different from what the granules were equilibrated previously. This is very likely case in real production processes. However, the kinetics of moisture change in the granules as well as in the pre-formed powder compacts have not been well studied. For controlling the microstructure in a system, it is necessary to fully understand the kinetics of moisture change and its relevance to packing structure of powders."

The experiments described below are a continuation of work on the graphitization of cast iron conducted as part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. In previous work it was found that melting in hydrogen increased the amount of eutectic carbide appearing in certain alloys and in others produced marked changes in the size of the graphite flakes. These effects seemed to be closely related to the amount of sulphur and manganese present in the material studied. Iron-carbon-silicon alloys did not respond to hydrogen in the same manner as cast iron and there was no evidence to show that hydrogen was able to stabilize the carbide in such alloys unless additions of sulphur were made. The two alloys examined contained about 2 per cent of silicon. The present paper is concerned with alloys of lower silicon content and describes the structural changes produced by melting in various atmospheres at pressurcs ranging from a partial vacuum up to 300 lb. per sq. inch. In New Mexico, there are at least 100,000 abandoned mine waste rock piles with widely ranging geochemical and mineralogical compositions. A geochemical and mineralogical study was implemented for five waste rock piles, some which contained sulfides, in the Hillsborn Mining District. Chemical and physical characteristics of mineral grains and their secondary mineral oxidation rinds were examined with the electron microprobe. Pyrite and chalcopyrite appear to be the most reactive to oxidizing conditions. Clays, iron oxide, iron hydroxide, iron sulfate, and primary texture rinds exist in the waste rock piles analyzed.

A comprehensive analysis of rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging: interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcore is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure. Both solution types rely on constant orientations (orientational stability) of the selected structure, but the internal solution actually provides its own test of orientational stability. External solutions are the norm in outcropping situations and internal solutions are invaluable in blind situations. In blind situations sequential "internal then external" solutions can be used respectively to provide a reference structure and then use this for subsequent external solutions at individual points downhole. Blind prospects can now be drilled and interpreted as easily as outcropping prospects. Each solution type has its own optimum requirements. External solutions are ambiguous for certain orientational relationships between the drillhole and the reference structure (for example, a perpendicular relationship), hence drillholes in which external solutions are planned should be designed to avoid these orientations. Internal solutions are ambiguous for straight drill paths, and are most unambiguously resolved when the drill path attains maximum drillhole dimensionality, that is, it occupies a wide variety of orientations in 3D space; hence drillholes in which internal solutions are planned should be designed as combinations of non-parallel holes or as individual strongly curved holes. For both solution types an understanding of the kind of structural fertility required leads to intelligent design of drill paths, which is termed structural drill targeting. It is distinct from spatial drill targeting, which is the process which defines and (x,y,z) point-or volume-target. Effective design of drilling programs requires both structural and spatial targeting. The external and internal solutions for vectorial parameters are implemented via (1) visual (qualitative), (2) stereographic, or (3) core orienting frame procedures. Each of these has its own advantages. Stereographic procedures have been simplified via the erection of a drillcore reference frame in which three fundamental angles are defined, and the formulation of an all-inclusive set of stereographic recipes for determining orientations from the measurement of these angles. Non- vectorial structural parameters comprise an ad hoc array of useful measures which are simply described by numbers. Examples are angles between structures, and density of structures. Such parameters (some of which provide useful vectors toward ore bodies) are invaluable in drillcore because they can be measured and recorded rapidly, without determining the orientation of the core. In a summary, non-oriented drillcore can now be structurally mapped exactly as if it were outcrop. Interpretation of the significant volume of unique structural information which is beginning to flow from this system can be optimised by using, in addition to the conventional cross section and longditudinal section, three new modes of presentation. The natural cross section is that section in space normal to a principal structure of interest. It is a section in which it is advisable to drill to obtain certain structural information, and in which the results need to be presented. A newly defined unique cross sectional orientational symbol is recommended for dramatic improvement in the quality of information presented in cross sections. Stacked level maps are a powerful adjunct to cross sections.

"In this investigation, the wastes of Eti Maden Kirka Boron Company of Turkiye were evaluated in the production of diopside and anorthite-based glass-ceramic glazes suitable for porcelain tiles fast and single-fired under industrial conditions. First of all, high wear resistant frits were produced with the use of concentrator and derivative borax wastes. Second of all, pre-engobed porcelain tile bodies were coated with the standard and newly produced frit-based glazes and industrial fast single-firing was employed. Final products were undergone to the certain standard tests to determine their Vickers hardness, wear resistance, thermal expansion coefficient values, gloss and coloring parameters. The micro-structures and phase formations of the fired glazes were also studied. Consequently, it was confirmed that the utilization of borax solid wastes in fast single-fired porcelain tile glass-ceramic glazes is possible. Introduction Porcelain tiles were introduced at the end of 1980s by Friandre, one of the leading Italian porcelain manufacturers. The American National Standard Specifications for Ceramic Tile defines porcelain tiles as: dense, smooth, impervious (with water absorption value less than 0.5 %) and stain resistant [1]. The excellent technical performances for ceramic tiles, such as mechanical, wear, frost and chemical resistance that make their use possible in indoor and outdoor building applications [2-3]. In the last decade, the growth rate of the global production of porcelain tiles increased more than those of other ceramic products; in fact, the technical properties of porcelain tile, coupled with even more improved aesthetic appearance, gave it a prominent role on the tile market [2]. Glass-ceramics are composed materials of one or more crystalline phases immersed in a residual glassy phase [4-5]. Glass-ceramic technology is based on controlled nucleation and crystallization of bulk glass [6]. The concepts of controlled crystallization of glass designate the separation of a crystalline phase from the parent glass in the form of tiny crystals. Their growth rate and final size are controlled by a suitable heat treatment [7]."

Since the earliest years of recorded history the durability and protective qualities of asphalt and tar have been known and utilized. The mummies of early Egyptian kings were coated with asphaltic materials, and asphalt mastics were common in Babylon. However, according to various authorities, it was not until 1780 that the first forerunner of present-day composition roofing was discovered,l and the large-scale expansion of the industry has taken place since 1900. Historical Background Development was stimulated by the growing popularity of manufactured gas. The by-product tars from these operations accumulated in large waste piles that had no commercial value and were a source of annoyance and expense to the gas companies. These tars were offered at very attractive terms to anyone who would take them away, and the infant "composition" roofing industry benefited accordingly. At first the process consisted simply of dipping sheets of burlap or other fabric in a tank of molten tar or asphalt. The long strip of roofing was rolled up for convenient handling, and the early experimenters soon found that it was necessary to dust the surface of their new "roll roofing" with some kind of material that would prevent the tarred surfaces from sticking together. Any finely divided, low- priced local material like sand or fine gravel served this purpose and from its application the roofing-granule industry grew. As time went on other characteristics of a properly applied mineral surfacing were recognized. As with wooden shingles, tar and asphalt can be ignited by flying embers from near-by fires. It was found that by increasing the largest particle size to the maximum that could be successfully embedded, and by properly controlling the amount of smaller fractions retained in the grade so as to cover the asphalt completely a high degree of resistance to fire was attained. Needless to say, in this early period asphaltic roofing needed such selling points to gain acceptance in a field dominated by wood, slate, and tile. When asphalt is protected from the sun's rays it is extremely durable, but when exposed to sunlight its surface is comparatively rapidly decomposed. Completely covering asphalt roofing with mineral surfacing protects the asphalt and adds materially to the life of the roof—conservatively, 500 per cent. Slate Graftules In the production of split slate shingles a large quantity of waste slate is accumulated, as 60 to go per cent of the rock quarried is discarded. This waste was a continuing burden on the industry. Some was marketed as ground slate flour for filler in paint and linoleum, and there is a record that as early as 1906 two carloads of coarse screenings from slate flour were marketed as granules for surfacing roofing. SYNOPSIS A back-analysis procedure based upon 35 mm photography was developed on a laboratory scale for the pur¬pose of determining the percentage of oversize particles known to be present in heaps of fragmented rock. Eight simple blends of crushed stone containing varying percentages of oversize on a 1:40 modelled scale were examined. Simulated test conditions for the following were subjected to the photographic study: (1) a bench heap, (2) the surface exposure of a partially excavated heap, (3) a gravity-sorted surface as occurs on an apron dump, and (4) four quadrant views of an incrementally built conical heap of rock fragments. The best back-analysis determinations were obtained from (4), the cone, over all eight blends of fragments. The mean error was within -0,16 per cent of the true value, with a range of ± 1,872. This was for oversize contents of 5 to 20 per cent where a minimum 25 per cent of the photograph area was processed by digitizer. The worst results were from the apron dump at - 1,462 per cent for a mean error of ± 4,174 per cent. The intermediate results were from the undisturbed bench at -0,186 per cent with a mean error of ±2,862 per cent.

"The amount of water reporting to the concentrate correlates well with the solid entrainment. It is well known that the frother and collector dosage as well as the froth depth and gas rate influence the amount of water reporting to the concentrate. This is also true for gas dispersion properties such as gas holdup and bubble surface area flux. On the other hand, a positive bias rate, required to reduce hydraulic entrainment, also affects water recovery and thus the particle recovered by entrainment (depending on the their size). Up until now, the effect of the gas rate on the water recovery has been studied, but no comprehensive investigation on the gas holdup, bubble size and bubble surface area flux has yet been reported. This research precisely aims at addressing this issue. The experimental work was carried out under a constant gas flow rate to eliminate the gas volume effect, while other gas dispersion properties have been varied by modifying the frother concentration and the shearing water introduced to the frit-and-sleeve sparger. A constant froth depth and no wash water were used, in order to be able to evaluate the exclusive correlation between the water recovery and the bubble surface area flux and/or the bubble size. It is worth mentioning, that the particle size of the hydrophobic particles did not show a significant effect on the amount of water going to the concentrate. Not surprisingly, experimental results demonstrate that water recovery increases with the bubble surface area flux and with the gas hold-up."
