HAVING had some experience in the use of gasoline-gas in a laboratory, I have been induced by frequent inquiry to present a few hints concerning it, which I hope may be of some value to those who are out of the reach of coal-gas, and who contemplate using this gas. While I will not delay to describe the method by which this gas is made, it may not be out of place to note that, unless frequent charges are put into the carburetter, the gas is variable in richness. This may be partially avoided, it is said, by repeatedly pumping from one cell in the carburetter to another. If a machine is in constant use for many months without re charging, the gas becomes rather poor for illuminating purposes ; but in this condition it may be burned in a Bunsen burner with advan tage. Could the gas be used always in this condition, no difficulty would be experienced, and it would be quite satisfactory for general laboratory purposes. Considerable annoyance, however, is experi enced whenever the machine is filled with gasoline. The Bunsen and other burners then produce a flame too smoky to be used with com fort, and, in fact, with most of them, a full supply of air; turned on at the base of the burner, will not suffice to completely burn off all the carbon. Finding it necessary to adopt some method by which I could get a flame free from unconsumed carbon, I adopted a plan which has in every way proved satisfactory. In addition to the pipe conveying the gas to the table, and ar ranged with a stopcock, there is brought to the table, within a fern inches of the gas-pipe, another pipe, conveying air direct from the pump. This pipe is also arranged with a stop-cock. The air- and gas-pipes are now connected with one pipe by a T joint; and to this last pipe is attached, by rubber tubing, the Bunsen or other burner. I have successfully used this simple system in connection with both small and large Bunsen burners, a burner with three tubes, arid a Fletcher burner; and recently I have added a new still to our equipment, and have been tising with it a Fletcher special high power burner No. 6, to which this system has been applied. The technology of gasifying coal to produce synthesis and pipeline gas has advanced significantly in the Past 20 to 30 years. This period has seen the extensive use of oxygen in coal gasification, the development of suspension gasification processes and fluidized-bed gasifiers, the operation of various gasification processes at elevated pressures, and operation of gasifiers under slagging conditions. These developments are discussed, and their application to commercial and pilot plant gasifiers is reviewed. Typical processes for synthesis gas production are described, and operating results are compared. Pipeline or high-Btu gas may be produced from coal either by catalytic conversion of synthesis gas to methane, or by the direct reaction of coal with hydrogen (hydrogasification) to produce a methane-rich gas. Neither of these methods has been applied commercially, but developments pertaining to each of them are reviewed, and general processing schemes are discussed. The use of coal as a raw material for manufacturing gas has a long and distinguished history. In fact, the gas industry began in the early 1800's when William Murdock demonstrated that it was feasible to produce and distribute gas made by retorting coal. Coal was used exclusively for gas manufacture until the middle of the 19th centruy, when Lowe invented the carbureted water gas process. In that process, coke was one of the raw materials used, so coal was still an important factor in gas manufacture. However the availability and relatively low cost of natural gas in the United States, and its widespread distribution by long-distance pipelines in recent years, has virtually eliminated the use of coal as a raw material for gas manufacture in this country. It should not be inferred from the foregoing that the technology of coal gasification has remained static in the United States and abroad. In fact, in the past two decades many new concepts have been developed in both the science and the technology of gasification. This progress has been a result of the considerable expansion in research on the fundamental chemistry and physics of gasification reactions, and in development work on gasification processes. This expansion in effort stems in part from increased interest in the use of gas as a raw material for the synthesis of chemicals and liquid fuels, and in part from the need to develop methods for gasifying coal and other solid fossil fuels to ensure a long-range supply of energy in the form of gaseous fuel. In these uses of gas, synthesis gas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in various proportions, is the starting material. It may be converted catalytically to gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons and other chemicals, or to hydrogen for use in hydrogenation or reduction reactions. Since coal is our most abundant fossil fuel, it is inevitable that one day it will regain its prominence as a raw material for gas manufacture. It is of interest, therefore, to consider the present status of gasification technology, directing attention particularly to advances made in recent years. Inasmuch as many comprehensive treatises l-3 and review4-7 of gasification technology are available, no attempt will be made in the present review to cover all processes in detail. Instead, the discussion will be concerned chiefly with typical processes embodying the advances that are most likely to be generally applied. ADVANCES IN GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGY For purposes of this discussion the starting point will be the conventional processes that were used for many years for the complete gasification of coal. These were: 1) carbonization in coke ovens followed by gasification of coke with air and steam in cyclic water-gas generators, and 2) fixed-bed air-blown producers. Russia's first "Petaletka'' has ended. Technically it did not succeed but practically it has been a great achievement in the petroleum industry. Out of the chaos of revolution and civil war Russia has developed her oil industry to second place in the world's production. For 1932 production of crude oil is estimated at 150,000,000 bbl. and refined products at 145,000,000 barrels. Russia has been able to give the petroleum industry every advantage that a government can extend to a fast growing industry. She has obtained all of her property by confiscation. Under government ownership, operation and control, her petroleum industry is not handicapped in any way by state rulings or by unnecessary competition in production, refining and marketing. There are no damage suits resulting from offsetting, flooding, repressuring, laying of pipe lines, building of docks or other necessary work. Russian oil fields2 have been easy to develop and operate. They lie advantageously to transportation for foreign markets. The chief disadvantages have been a lack of credit and technical cooperation, but the former is being overcome by the sacrifice of the people. They go without the comforts of life that all salable articles may be exported for the imports of modern machinery. Modern machinery is fast replacing the obsolete and worn-out equipment. Technical cooperation has been difficult because it has been necessary to train thousands of adults to do technical and mechanical work. Great quantities of pipe, tools and electrical equipment were necessary for the rapidly developing fields and refineries. The supplies have been inadequate and the quality poor. This lack of equipment, along with the untrained technical supervision, has been the cause of the proposed quota falling short. Fig. 1 shows the production for 1931 and 1932. During 1932 a large percentage of the oil was produced in the proven fields of the Caucasus.

High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are an accepted, but continuously expanding, comminution technology. The copper industry has a growing need to process harder ores with progressively lower grades, more challenging metallurgy and increasing demand for efficient bacterial leaching applications. This has resulted in a major focus on HPGR use in a crushing circuit. If the industry is to increase leach extraction while lowering energy costs in high-throughput hydrometallurgical operations, HPGR will be of inherent significance. The following paper summarizes test work on copper leach ores utilizing the benefits of HPGR comminution, while increasing several critical metallurgical parameters. Based on the current work and previous investigations, it was found that HPGR comminution within a crushing circuit, in specific instances, can result in 2 - >10% increases in cop-per extraction. The tested variables are crush size, rock type and copper mineralogy dependence. Various other process parameters may also be optimized.

FIVE miles southwest of Mt. Holly Springs, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Clay Co. has been mining and milling a white clay since 1896; for use in white cement, as a filler in rubber, pigment and paper, in the manufacture of insecticides, and for other minor purposes. Until late in 1942, when the mine was abandoned because of labor shortage, combined underground mining and surface stripping produced approximately 30,000 tons of clay a year, of which 10,000 tons were refined in the mill. GEOLOGY Lower Cambrian Antietam quartzite and the Montalto quartzite, stratigraphically older, trend N.55°E. and make a sharp 1600-ft. anticlinal ridge of the South Mountains. The Tomstown dolomite overlies the Antietam quartzite on the southeast flank of the anticline, which is displaced near its crest by a steeply dipping oblique fault. Erosion of the less resistant Tomstown formation has resulted in a narrow valley at an elevation of 700 ft. Directly on top of the Antietam quartzite and at the base of the Tomstown formation is a zone of sandy white clay, lenticular along the strike of the formations, ranging in thickness from 10 to 300 ft. within a mile. All of the formations dip steeply to the southeast, from 65° to vertical. The clay crops out at an elevation of about 1000 feet. ORIGIN AND CHARACTER The uppermost part of the Antietam formation is sericitic and schistose at many places, and at all these places weathering is in an advanced stage. The clay is the residual product of weathering of this sericitic quartzite or sandy schist. The crude clay has the physical aspect of a sandy kaolin, but there are large areas in the clay formation that are low in free silica, and commonly the 30 ft. adjacent to the Antietam quartzite is notably free of silica. The overlying Tomstown dolomite has been weathered almost completely to a mixed yellow and brown clay, which carries a zone of nodular and chunky limonite and manganese ore, 4 to 12 ft. thick, about l00 ft. from the contact with the white clay. In mining, this zone is an important "marker," indicating where the white clay may be expected in an advancing tunnel. The contact of the white clay formation with the yellow and brown clay of the Tomstown formation is relatively sharp, although the line of contact is irregular and therefore responsible for the lenticular character of the white clay formation. Following is an analysis of the refined clay containing less than one per cent of moisture when dried at 212°F.: Si02, 67.05 per cent; A1203, 22.27; Fe203, 0.40; CaO, 0.00; Ti02, 1.05; MgO, 0.52; Na20, 0.04; K20, 0.88; ignition loss, 7.65; total, 99.86.

One of the significant changes which has occurred in the flotation sector of the minerals industry, over the last two decades, has been the successful development of the very large flotation machine. The last twenty years has seen the volume of the individual cell, available to the industry, increase by a factor of ten. Today, new mills, and existing mill modernization plans, can consider individual cell volumes as large as 85 m3 with the certainty that the metallurgical performance capability of the large machine is inherently as efficient as the smaller machine. The large flotation cell offers benefits to the user such as reduced floor space, lower total power, process control simplification, and reduced maintenance. However, the flotation machine size selection process, based on overall installation economics, must include such factors as process tonnage, flotation kinetics characteristics, and metallurgical performance objectives. This paper discusses the flotation machine size and circuit arrangement selection based on both metallurgical performance and economic considerations. A computer based flotation kinetic analysis technique, which has proven valuable in quantifying the metallurgical response of flotation circuits having different cell sizes and number, is utilized to illustrate the selection of cell size and arrangement best suited to a client's Requirement.

Improve the efficiency of stainless steel pickling (chemically cleaning) operations by providing the industry a quick and convenient method to estimate pickling solution behavior and to estimate recommended ranges of nitric and hydrofluoric acid concentrations for effective pickling of stainless steels. Background Iron, chromium, and nickel in stainless steels react with nitric and hydrofluoric acids during pickling. Ions of these dissolved metals complex or combine with the acid anions. When the total metal concentration reaches about, 50 grams per liter of pickling solution, the solution no longer serves its purpose and is considered spent. Knowledge of cation and anion species in these pickling solutions contributes an insight into pickling chemistry and allows estimates to be made of the most effective ranges of acid concentrations. The Bureau developed a computational model of the complex equilibrium chemistry occurring among iron, chromium, and nickel and the pickling solution. Total concentrations, in grams per liter, of nitrate, fluoride, iron, chromium, and nickel were used as input; output was 17 cation and anion molar concentrations. The model, in the form (if an equilibrium program on a mainframe computer, was used extensively to facilitate Bureau research by determining chemical complexes in numerous stainless steel pickling solutions. However, the program's availability to members of the stainless steel industry, its intended users, was limited because of lack of mainframe compatibility and the difficulty of program maintenance.

A group of bisbenzylisoquinoline (BBIQ) alkaloids has been shown to exhibit various degrees of effectiveness in preventing silicainduced fibrosis in animal models (1, 2). The capability of these drugs to interact with phosphatidycholine vesicles and rat alveolar macrophages was studied using fluorometric and equilibrium dialysis methods. The lipid binding affinity of these alkaloids was found to depend upon several structural factors including hydrophobic substitutions, the chiral configurations, and the double oxygen bridge-restricted conformation of the benzylisoquinoline moieties. Tetrandrine, which is highly effective in preventing fibrosis, showed strong binding to both lipid vesicles and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, curine and tubocurine, which have little or no effect on silicosis, exhibited only weak binding to lipid vesicles and almost no binding to cells. The moderate binding affinity of fangchinoline to vesicles and cells corresponded to a moderate effectiveness of the compound as an antifibrogenic agent. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrogenic potential, also exhibited high binding affinities for lipid and cells. In summary, this study indicates that alveolar macrophages exhibit large binding capacities for certain members of the BBIQ alkaloids. A positive correlation was observed between binding affinity to alveolar macrophages and the reported antifibrotic potency of these compounds, suggesting that the ability of these drugs to interact with alveolar macrophages may be a key step in inhibition of the progression of silica-induced pulmonary disease.

Mineral sands are being used as the source material for new "high-tech" engineering materials. One such material, Magnesia Partially Stabilized Zirconia (PSZ) has been developed and patented world-wide by CSIRO. Derived from zircon sands, the material is currently produced by Nilcra Ceramics in Australia and is exported world-wide.The properties of the material are contrary to those generally accepted for ceramics and are far more akin to those of steel. The material resists not only abrasive wear, impact and thermal shock, but does so under corrosive conditions that frequently cause early failure of metal and cemented carbide.While the consumption of mineral sands for the production of PSZ is not going to significantly increase the demand in the short term, the material itself may well assist the productivity and processing problems within the industry.

"The aim of this study was to develop an approach for the selectively removal of Zn(II) from heavy metal-bearing-wastewaters produced by gold chemical industry using magnetic chitosan based adsorbents. Chitosan beads were prepared by cross-linked modification of Fe3O4-chitosan bead using epichlorohydrin as the cross-linker. Both Zn(II) inprinted magnetic chitosan hydrogel bead (Zn-MCHB) and unprinted magnetic chitosan hydrogel bead (MCHB) were prepared and batch adsorption experiments were used to evaluate their adsorption capacities and selectivities. Single adsorption of Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ showed that both MCHB and Zn-MCHB adsorbs all the four metals and had an affinity in the order of Cu2+ > Pb2+ > Zn2+ > Ni2+. The binary adsorption revealed that the two adsorbents preferentially adsorb Cu2+/Pb2+ from Zn2+-Cu2+/ Zn2+-Pb2+ binary systems. However, MCHB does not show any selectivity in Zn2+-Ni2+ system. In contrast, Zn- MCHB preferentially adsorbs Zn2+ from Zn2+-Ni2+ binary system. Furthermore, the adsorption selectivity is predictable from stability constants of the metals with the amino group of chitosan. The information revealed in this work can be used for further applications in the treatment of wastewater containing a range of heavy metals from the gold chemical industry."

Elementary concepts of seismic wave properties are reviewed to establish a framework for discussing seismic noise and its suppression. A liberal number of references is included for those who wish to pursue the topic in detail. A base motion noise level is established for a single surface seismometer. It is argued that simple array processing and seismometer burial should regularly permit us to approach this base noise level which is found in areas free of conspicuous man-made seismic noise sources. The sensitivity of the base seismic level to a number of common disturbances is presented. Solutions that promise to hold the "effective" seismic noise at a site near the base level are given for acoustic, meteorological and fixed local surface sources. Guidelines are suggested for controlling other local man-made sources, e.g. vehicular traffic, by keeping them at sufficiently large distances away from the seismometers to keep noise at permissible levels. These guidelines are speculative and conservative. They should be the subject of future study. The ability to process against general local activity, drilling, and intra- mine sources is limited. Certainly no dramatic gain is to be expected. When strong man-made and/or intramine noise sources are not controllable, detection may well be impossible to achieve, unless the seismometer can be moved close enough to the suspected miner position, i.e. via very deep holes, to compensate for the likely vast differences in strength of the miner signal and the uncontrollable man-made noise sources. However, many intramine sources, e.g., falling water, rock bursts, explosions, etc., may well preclude the existence of a hale miner in their vicinity, and therefore any need to attempt detection of a miner at such locations. The following recommendations are made to enhance the detection and location of a miner signaling seismically. They are: 1. Seismometer burial in slim holes. 2. Narrow band detection, using multiple narrow band filters to cover the likely signal band. 3. Broadband recording and analysis for time-of-arrival estimation.

INTRODUCTION Lesotho is a mountainous area of southern Africa from which water is to be exported in an extensive tunnel system, to industrial regions inland. The related tunnelling project has involved a num- ber of drives using tunnel boring machines [TBMs] to excavate about 100 km of 5 m diameter water tunnels [von Glehn and Bluhm, 1995). This paper describes the ventilation and cooling of some of the tunnel drives from both the operational and design points-of-view with a particular focus on heat generation. There were many common features in all of the drives but this paper is focused mainly on the Hlotse drive which was 18,4 km long. The drives were ventilated using forced ventilation systems to provide appropriate air flow throughout the tunnels and face zones. In addition, the Hlotse drive required refrigeration equip- ment which provided chilled water to the tunnel. While the sec- ondary ventilation systems play an important role in gas and dust handling, the paper concentrates on the primary ventilation and cooling issues. The ventilation of these tunnels was an exacting exercise be- cause: • Rock temperatures and geothermal heat flow were high. • TBMs with relatively high power ratings were used. • Diesel locomotives were used. • Drives were relatively long. • High altitude meant a low air density. An important feature was the simulation and monitoring of the ventilation and heat flow components and the project was characterised by analysis, monitoring and ongoing tactical decision-making throughout the progress. The thermodynamics of the systems were complex because there were many interactive effects and analyses were carried out using special computer pro- grams. The monitoring confirmed the accuracy of the models, and in this manner it was possible to confidently ensure healthy and safe working conditions and still minimise costs. Local ambient climate conditions range from temperatures higher than 35 "C in summer to below -10 OC in winter. Based on available statistical data and the thermal storage/damping effects in the system, design summer ambient conditions were taken as 15 OC/25 "C wet-bulb/dry-bulb. The barometric pressure was 80 kPa and due to the altitude, the ambient air density was only 0,9 kg/m3. The local Authority specified a maximum in-tunnel wet- bulb temperature [at any point] of 32,O OC and a mean wet-bulb temperature [from all locations] of 27,5 OC maximum. The maxi- mum height of ground cover above the tunnel was 1 200 m and the maximum virgin rock temperature was 41 OC; see Figure 1. Diesel dilution criteria specified by the local Authority was a minimum of 0.1 m3/s per rated kW of diesel engine. Other requirements related to gases such as CO, CO2, NOx and CH4 [and the need for intrinsically safe equipment] but these are not of direct relevance to this paper. The actual average face advance was about 30 m/d with good days achieving 60 m/d and good months achieving 1 000 m [23 working days]. The original design tunnelling rate was 50 m/d. DESCRIPTION OF HLOTSE DRIVE VENTILATION AND COOLING SYSTEM The ventilation requirements in the tunnels were dictated by heat and diesel dilution needs. The best ventilation and cooling policy is generally a balance between using increased quantities of fresh air or refrigeration [or both]. In this particular scenario it turned out that, since the diesel emission criteria required large quantities of air, the refrigeration needs were modest. The drive was ventilated using a ducted, forced ventilation system from fans located at the portal. The maximum ventilation requirement was 51 m3/s when the drive was at 18.4 km. From a heat flow point of view, the worst scenario was a heat load of 3.5 MW when the drive was at 7 km. This was cooled by the ventilation air and a supply of chilled water to the tunnel. Refrigeration and chilled water system In the design phase, a detailed comparison was carried out between two general alternatives for providing refrigeration. First, was a system in which refrigeration sets and air coolers are installed on the TBM train; the refrigeration sets are cooled by condenser water piped to and from cooling towers at the portal. Second, was a system in which refrigeration water chillers are in- stalled at the portal and chilled water is piped into the tunnel. The detailed comparison indicated that the capital and running costs of the second system were at least 60 % lower than the in-tunnel plant. There were also many obvious practical benefits for favouring the portal system. The refrigeration plant supplied 23 11s of cold water at a temperature of 10 OC. After providing the cooling effect in the drive, the water returned to the portal where it was initially cooled in open-circuit evaporative pre-cooling towers, chilled in the refrigeration plant and then returned to the tunnel. The cold water flowed into the tunnel in an insulated supply pipe and returned in an uninsulated pipe; the water was simply circulated to the end of the pipe and returned. The cooling effect in the tunnel was achieved entirely through heat transfer from the pipe [long linear heat exchanger] and no air coils or other heat exchangers were required. The cooling requirements were satisfied by the heat transfer to the returns chilled water steel pipe [200 mm]. The pipes were eventually installed to a maximum distance of 10,8 km in what was considered a very practical and cost effective solution.

Hard coal, mined in Silesia Region as well as in the eastern part of Poland, is a key national resource. In Polish underground coal industry, modern mining technologies have been successfully tested and used in the last 50 years. More than 98% of the coal produced underground is extracted by longwall mining method. Current underground coal mining expands into increasing depths. The use of conventional coal extraction methods ? room and pillar and longwall with caving - is becoming increasingly difficult. The coal mining is modifying existing methods and is testing innovative technologies. Backfill is an important component of modern underground mining operations. In Polish underground mines, backfill is recognized as an integral component for extraction of coal from greater depths in a densely populated environment. The modifying and innovative methods require the use of backfill or grouting of caving to provide structural support in underground excavations and to ensure that the mining operations are safe. Depending on the geological structure, mining conditions and environmental requirements there are several variations of longwall methods used in underground coal mining in Poland, in particular: longwall with caving, longwall with backfill, longwall with grouting of caving area. This paper will discuss the different components of an effective longwall production and filling process of caving area. The paper will give a overview of the current application of backfill technology, focusing on Polish coal mining operations. This paper will also briefly describe how backfill contributes to an innovative method ? underground coal gasification. The paper discusses specific requirements for fill materials and the technology of backfilling for underground coal gasification (UCG) operations and problems of implementation and correlation of backfill parameters with other processes that occur during thermal processing of coal.

To improve productivity and cut costs, modern underground mining operations have become more mechanized. This mechanization has increased the usage of fuels, hydraulics, and electrical equipment associated with diesel-powered vehicles, thereby also increasing the hazards of underground mine fires. The Bureau of Mines evaluated the fire hazard problem and assembled prototype components for a system that would automatically sense and extinguish fires on mobile underground equipment. The prototype system and alternative designs were in-mine-tested and proved effective. This report summarizes this technology, which can cost effectively help solve the problem of fire hazards on underground vehicles.
