"Flotation plants typically aim to maximise recovery at or above a target grade. As the ore from the mine varies, operators increase or decrease the mass pull in different flotation banks by adjusting air and level set points in order to achieve target concentrate grade. A methodology has been developed to maximise overall recovery at target grade by determining the optimal mass pull for each bank. However, the approach of targeting equal grade for each ore type in the deposit leads to sub-optimal overall recovery. This is because some ore types sacrifice a large amount of recovery to reach target grade while others easily achieve target grade and can be processed at higher than target grade for little or no loss in recovery. Processing different ore types at different grades and blending the concentrates therefore gives a higher overall recovery.This paper presents a case study where an 80 year production forecast was made for a large Chilean copper concentrator in feasibility stage. A circuit model was created using SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator (IGS) for the different ore types to be processed. The model was calibrated from standard rougher flotation tests (MFT), cleaner tests and from the results of plant surveys of similar operations. The pull rates for each bank in the circuit were determined to achieve an optimal graderecovery curve for each ore type. These curves were combined at different concentrate grades for each ore type to obtain the mathematically optimal overall recovery at target grade. The paper shows a methodology for obtaining an optimal combination of operating conditions for each ore type to maximise overall recovery at a set combined concentrate grade."

Cable bolting is a relatively new strata reinforcement technique that has been used successfully in Australia and the United Kingdom. Jim Walter Resources, Inc. has examined the principles and can visualize its useful application in many areas, such as: a) Longwall pull-out areas, b) Roadway junctions, particularly those involving yield pillars, c) Rib reinforcement, and d) Possible replacement of cribbing in roadways, especially longwall tailgates. This paper describes the conditions which led to cable bolt testing, the results of tests conducted to date, and conclusions about the direction that Jim Walter Resources, Inc. is heading as far as testing and potential applications are concerned.

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Ohio Fuel Gas Co. constructed a special water-gas generator for the tests and provided men and the necessary funds for its operation. More than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after-effect's, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (I) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, 07. 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. Although not fully accepted in South Africa, the Theory of Sampling originally proposed by Pierre Gy is fast becoming the cornerstone of sampling practice throughout the world. The growing acceptance of Gy?s Theory of Sampling in South Africa can be attributed to a number of factors, chief amongst them being the development of a tradable mineral asset market, the promulgation of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), the growing number of commercial and academic courses that are offered on sampling, and the regulation of the industry through internationally acceptable guidelines and rules for reporting and trading in mineral assets. The size of the South African minerals industry and the dependence of our economy on mineral production have also meant that correct sampling is of key importance to mineral trade. ISO standards have been the principal guides for producers of mineral bulk commodities who produce to customers? specifications, whereas Gy?s insights have been most readily accepted by precious and base metals producers whose product is sold into metal markets. Understanding of small-scale variability is essential in the precious and base-metal industries, but detailed studies of the effects of heterogeneity have not been as productive in the bulk commodities. Sampling practices at different stages of mineral development from exploration, face sampling and grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical sub-sampling, point of sale sampling, and sampling in the laboratory are considered in the gold, platinum, ferrous metal, and coal industries. A summary of the impact of poor sampling in these industries is presented. Generally it appears that poor sampling practice is most likely to erode mineral asset value at the early stages of mineral development. The benefits of good sampling are considered, especially with regard to the financial implications of bias and error on large and consistent consignments of bulk commodities. With conventional heat pipe science as the starting point, a new heat transfer technology --- termed Thermopump technology, has been developed at McGill University and is now being tested at a number of industrial operations. This technology is of particular importance for transferring energy in high temperature / high heat flux environments where solutions based on current techniques are not available. One important application for this technology is in the metals recycling area wherein this technology has been used to make a waterless, non-consumable, high efficiency Thermopump oxygen lance. The viability and efficiency of this oxygen lance have been demonstrated by preliminary plant trials in a reverb furnace for the recycling of lead-acid batteries at the RSR Corporation. Full-scale commercial trials of the Thermopump (TP) oxygen lance have been carried out at the RSR Corporation. The results from these tests will be presented. In addition, some applications of the Thermopump technology for other metal recycling processes will also be discussed in this paper.

With a view to producing increased target output every year, Indian coal mining industry is fast moving towards mechanisation but the present approach of mechanisation suffers from lack of standardisation, mainly due to nonavailability of the cutting data for various machine/rock combinations. The coal seams of the country are relatively hard in nature and the coaling machines are reported to be affecting production and productivity of the coal mine and the very trend of mechanisation. This paper presents the result of extensive study performed to visualise the cutting characteristics of coal seams of compressive strength ranging from 20 MPa to 65 MPa. In a specially designed drag bit type coal plough rig, continuous recording of cutting forces was done with the help of a microprocessor based data logger and the specific energy of cuttability was evaluated at different depth of cut and speed of cutting. The geomechanical properties such as compressive strength, orientation and frequency of cleats etc. and different indices of coal seams were measured in the laboratory and field and relationship was developed for easy determination of specific energy.

Natural gas influences the movement of oil through reservoir rock by affecting the physical properties of the oil and the pressure within the reservoir. The presence of gas bubbles changes the laws of flow and the distribution of forces. The problem of flow of oil and gas through a porous rock is complex, and most authors, in order to analyze their problems, have found it necessary to make or accept certain generalized assumptions. Some of these assumptions, particularly the ones dealing with capillary phenomena and moleculnr forces, have not received sufficient attention and by lack of understanding have often been misinterpreted. Herold1 has called attention to the resistance offered by gas bubbles in capillary spaces and has drawn some interesting conclusions with regard to the action of natural gas in a reservoir rock. He has duplicated an experiment of the French physicist Jamin, has interpreted his findings in terms of molar mechanics, and, from experimental observations, has made a number of assumptions which he later applies in discussing problems of natural flow and recovery of oil. The Jamin action is an assumption because it lacks a physical proof and has never been determined quantitatively. Tickel12 attempts to develop a formula expressing the work performed by a distorted bubble. H. A. Wilson, in the recent publication of the American Petroleum Institute on the function of natural gas, discusses the phenomenon in terms of classical physics. Both contributions are incomplete and offer no experimental data. This paper includes a study of the static condition of equilibrium of gas and liquid bubbles confined to capillary spaces. "Mercury bearing ore bodies are often treated for the production of copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver. The mercury deports either to tailings or is collected during various stages of the extraction process. This paper reviews the relationship between various mercury collection processes and the subsequent management of the mercury by-product or waste. It focuses on mercury removal sequestration including cementation, sulphide precipitation, bulk neutralization, and carbon adsorption. Long term mercury management strategies including third-party stabilization, stabilized mercury co-disposal, secure storage, and mercury recycle are also evaluated. INTRODUCTIONMercury is produced in North America as a by-product of non-ferrous metals processing and from recycling of products such as dental amalgam, fluorescent lamps, and thermometers. Its toxicity is recognized to have significant negative impacts on the environment and human health. As a result, many countries are adopting regulations limiting mercury use and its uncontrolled release.The European Union banned mercury exports in 2011 and the United States will do so in 2013. The export bans aim to prevent mercury use in developing countries for activities such as artisanal small scale gold mining. However, by-product mercury production from the non-ferrous metals industries continues.These factors contribute to an oversupply of mercury and the need to find suitable treatment methods for the long term management and storage of mercury and mercury bearing materials."

Cement production in Australia approximates 6.5 million tonnes per year. Cement clinker is sourced from 15 plants which operate 28 kilns. Cement grinding is conducted at 14 of the clinker plants plus 7 grinding plants. Average annual capacity per kiln or plant is lower than in many overseas countries, but kilns introduced since 1970's have been of larger size more in keeping with size trends overseas, although still smaller than the large units overseas. Substantial economies in capital and labour costs can be achieved in large production units, particularly with dry process kilns using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. Precalcination techniques have been introduced to the Australian cement industry but as cement transport costs form a major part of supplying diverse market areas, the size of kilns is likely to remain less than maximum owing to balance with distribution costs. The cement industry uses significant amounts of thermal and electrical energy which can be minimised by proper selection of equipment and technology. Labour costs are also significant and can be contained by automation and computer control of the process.

A method is presented for calculating approximate injection rates in secondary recovery operations. The method can be applied to cases of unequal fluid mobilities, irregular well patterns and boundary patterns. The steady-state pressure distributions for the four flood patterns reported by Muskat and for five additional patterns reveal that most of the difference in pressure between the injection and producing wells occurs in regions around the wells which can adequately be described as regions of radial flow. This leads to a method of calculating injectivity by approximating the flood pattern with radial flow elements (or a combination of radial- and linear-flow elements for some patterns such as the direct line drive). Irregular and boundary patterns can also be approximated by radial and linear elements. Each of these elements can be described by radial-and linear-flow equations and the results combined as series flow resistances to give an approximate equation for the initial injection rate. The mobility ratio does not affect the initial rate; therefore, if the well pattern is one of those regular patterns for which theoretical rate equations have been derived for unity mobility ratio, the approximate initial rate equation can be improved by adjusting it to match the theoretical equation. The available theoretical rate equations are listed, including five new cases. As the flood progresses, the injectivity changes because in general the flood front will divide the pattern into areas of different fluid mobilities. Simple shapes can be assumed for the flood front so that both areas can be divided into radial- and linear-flow elements. Radial- and linear-flow equations are applied to these elements to account for the change in flow resistance behind the front. To calculate injection rates after breakthrough, it is necessary to know the sweep efficiency at breakthrough. Areal sweep data are available in the literature for a number of patterns, and sufficiently accurate breakthrough sweep efficiency can be estimated from these data if it is not otherwise available. Again, simple shapes for the flood front can be assumed after breakthrough, and injection rates can be calculated for the remainder of the flood. When areal sweep data are available, these data can be used to cbeck. the calculated injection rates after breakthrough. Injection rates calculated by this approximate method compare favorably with available model data. INTRODUCTION When the fluid mobilities in the swept and un swept regions are equal, the injectivity will not change as the flood front advances; and for regular patterns it can be calculated by mathematical formu1as.l When the fluid mobilities in the swept and unswept regions are not equal, the injectivity will increase or decrease as the flood front advances. In this case, the injectivity has not been calculated by analytical means for any practical well pattern; and, furthermore, scale model and analog4,6 results have been published only for the five-spot pattern. The main object of this paper is to present an approximace method for calculating injectivity for the case of unequal mobilities. The method can be applied to regular, irregular and boundary patterns. Before the approximate method is discussed, the analytical formulas for equal mobilities will be summarized, and the analytical solution for radial flow with unequal mobilities will be used to show how the injectivity changes as the flood progresses. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that 89 water well drillers died on the job between 1992 and 2002, and 28 of these deaths were electrocutions (Figure 1). In fact, elec­trical accidents are the leading on-the-job killer of water well drillers. The use of electricity is such an integral part of our lives that we usually take it for granted, but if we don?t understand or choose to ignore the hazards associated with electricity, the results can be deadly. Why is electrical shock so dangerous? If the voltage (of a shock) is sufficient to drive electrical current through your body, just 10 milliamps of cur­rent (1000 milliamps = 1 amp) can cause muscles to contract and prevent you from releasing an energized wire or tool in your grip. As little as 30 milliamps of current can paralyze your breathing, and 75 milli­amps can cause your heart to stop pumping blood (ventricular fibrillation). As a comparison, a small bedroom night-light draws about 30 to 60 milliamps. Other factors influence how severely you?ll be shocked if you touch a live electrical circuit, such as the path electrical current takes through your body and how long it flows, as well as your body weight. How much voltage is needed to drive electrical cur­rent through your body? Not much! Generally, any power source at 50 volts AC or higher is considered dangerous.

THe results obtained by pneumatic flotation throughout the country on all classes of ore, and the tonnage now being treated by this particular method, speak for themselves. Its advantages over the so-called agitation process are now established by facts and data from practicc. The comparative efficiency of a rapidly revolving paddle, as a means for aerating an ore pulp, and of a cyeloidal or turbine blower for the same purpose, would seem to be so obvious as to leave no room for discussion. Practitioners in this art are to be congratulated on the acquisition of the valuable literary contributions that have recently been made on the theory of flotation by Messrs. Ralston, Van Arsdale, Taggart and Beach, and others, and the very valuable and able articles by Messrs. Laist and Wiggin on "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont.," by Dr. Rudolf Gahl on the "History of Flotation at Inspiration," and by David Cole on "The Advent of Flotation in the Morenci District." It is not within the province of this article to attempt an answer to the various issues raised in regard to the theory, or to defend the one advanced by me a year ago. But since discussion usually benefits the profession, a reply will be made to some of the statements made by the last-named writers. CoMPABATIVE SENSITIVENESS AND ATTENDANCE Concerning the article, "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont.," by Laist and Wiggin, a little explanation is in order. It should be stated that, with the exception of about 24 days at the end of the testing period, the Callow experimental plant at Anaconda was not run under my direction. This perhaps accounts for some of the concIusions drawn on page 499 of the descriptive paper. The conclusion that the use of acid seems to be of considerable advantage, calls for some comment. While the tests conducted by the Anaconda Copper Co. do show acid to be of considerable benefit, this is a consequence of using acid sludge as a flotation agent. When drilling blast holes, with roller cone bits, a phenomenon known as drilling vibration can occur. It is characterized by either axial or lateral modes of periodic motion of the drill pipe; superimposed on the time-average angular motion of the drill pipe provided by the drill rig rotary head and the vertical motion associated with the penetration rate of the tricone bit into the rock being drilled. This periodic motion can be very severe and, if appropriate action is not initiated by the drill rig operator, could lead to structural damage to the drill rig. Ultimately, the occurrence of drilling vibration limits the productivity potential of a rotary drill.

Successful treatment of contaminated sediments was achieved by sparging either 0.5 M NaOH solutions or distilled water with an SO2/O2 gas mixture. Metals such as Cu, Pb, Cr and Cd were successfully removed in a relatively short time. The effect of temperature and pH was investigated. Higher temperatures produced faster and higher recoveries with Pb and Cr more affected to temperature increase than Cu and Cd. The removal of copper, up to 50% percent, was achieved in alkaline solutions through the formation of copper sulfite complexes. The complete removal of metals such as Cu, Pb, Cr and Cd required that part of the treatment be carried out in acidic solutions. A preliminary cost analysis was carried out.

In both production and refining operations of the oil industry many processes are controlled by the gas-liquid phase relationships of the hydrocarbon mixtures of interest. The quantitative behavior of fractionating or distillation columns and stills depends on the changes in the equilibrium distributions of the hydrocarbon components between the gas and liquid phases as the pressure or temperature conditions may vary along the length of the column or as the gross operating parameters and compositions are varied. In oil producing operations the nature and amount of gas phase developed within an underground reservoir as it is being depleted and its pressure declines also involve the basic equilibrium gas-liquid phase interactions. The influence of surface conditions of temperature and pressure and various separation procedures on the nature and amount of stock tank oil and natural gas recovered from a given well stream is likewise determined by the same basic phase equilibrium characteristics of the hydrocarbon systems. Such equilibrium separation of the gas and liquid phases in a well stream is of importance both in establishing optimum separator conditions for obtaining maximum stock tank oil yields and in the general problem of crude stabilization. The phenomena involved in these problems and their quantitative aspects can, of course, be established in each individual instance by appropriate laboratory experimentation. It has been found, however, that by associating with the individual hydrocarbon components functional characteristics de- scribing their individual gas - liquid phase equilibrium behavior, the phase properties of the composite mixtures can be predicted by mathematical computation. These characteristics have been termed "equilibrium constants", or "equilibrium ratios"," and are defined by the general equation: where K, is the equilibrium ratio for the jth component, y, is the rnol fraction of that component in the gas phase, and xj is the corresponding mol fraction in the coexisting liquid phase. Considering the Kj as representing available and measurable properties of the individual components of a mixture, and as defined by Eq. (l), it is readily shown that in a coexisting gas-liquid system the rnol fraction concentrations of the individual components in the gas phase, y,, and those in the liquid phase, x,, are given by the expressions: where the nj are the corresponding rnol fraction concentrations in the composite system, and ng is the mol fraction of the whole which is in the gas phase. The basic unknown in Eq. (2) is n,: which gives the gross separation between the gas and liquid phases. This may be determined in principle by imposing the requirement that the sums of the mol fractions in both the gas and liquid phases are unity, i.e. by the equations: The solution of the equivalent Eqs. The Pao gold prospect in N. Luzon, is an example of a high sulphidation epithermal gold system hosted in Mid-Tertiary alkaline volcanics, in the Philippine Arc. Styles of mineralization include: quartz-enargite veins, vuggy silica alteration bodies, and pervasive low grade (0.5ppm) gold mineralization, associated with kaolinite-pyrite-quartz alteration, and geochemically characterized by high As and Hg. Early magnetite-epidote-chlorite alteration linked to an unexposed granitoid is overprinted by an extensive zone of advanced argillic alteration (kaolinite-pyrite-quartz). No alunite is recorded. Important controls of mineralization include; a broad anticline intersected by axial faults, permeable pyroclastic units, and upward confinement of the alteration system by a highly impermeable, clay-rich volcanic unit. At this stratigraphic position the most important mineralization waz developed. The Pao high sulphidation system is not closely related to a stratovolcanic centre, and has formed subsequent to deformation of the volcanic field. It may, however, be related to an unexposed comagmatic intrusion.

This paper reviews the current techniques employed in the prediction of subsidence and how they have been applied to partial extraction systems. The method using influence functions to describe the shape of the profile is investigated in detail and has been adopted to model the subsidence over workings in Huntly. It is compared with the profile methods developed in the United Kingdom and found to predict the subsidence profile more accurately than these methods.
