Kaltim Prima Coal, an open cut coal mine located in Sangatta, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, operates two deep pits and two shallow pits with a truck and shovel operation. KPC produced 17 Mt of coal in 2002 by removing 120 Mbcm overburden. Geochemical investigations have indicated 20 per cent of total waste rock is potentially acid forming; ie it has the potential to create acid mine drainage (AMD). In the early years of the KPC operation, the presence of AMD had been observed in the mined out areas and in the waste rock dumps as a result of sulfidic waste rock exposure. A strategy for management of AMD from waste rock was implemented involving: sampling, analysis, modelling, selective handling and validation of final dump covers. Samples of the waste rock lithologies are collected from exploration drill holes for geochemical analysis to determine their acid generating potential. The geochemical database is used to develop the waste rock model for the life of mine pit areas. The acid forming and non-acid forming waste rock is delineated for each mining bench area for selective handling and placement within the waste rock dump during the operational stage. Each mining bench is sampled and assessed to validate the model predictions. The final dump cover is sampled to meet strict Quality Assurance requirements to ensure non-acid forming waste material is used in the outer cover of the dump. The geochemical investigation of the waste rock is integrated with mine planning to design and construct the waste rock dump to minimise the risk of generating acid. This process links the exploration stage, operation stage, and rehabilitation stage for each Pit area. The paper briefly reports the waste rock characterisation, waste modelling and strategies used for management of acid drainage by KPC.

The Bureau of Mines studied the characteristics of simulated coal gas as an automotive fuel in two multicylinder vehicles in a standard and high-compression-ratio engine configuration. While using simulated coal gas fuel, increasing the engine compression ratio improved the fuel economy and vehicle performance but increased hydrocarbon emissions by 40 pct. photochemical reactivity of exhaust hydrocarbons was found to be extremely low using the coal gas fuel. An oxidizing catalyst used with the simulated coal gas fuel eliminated all but trace amounts of carbon monoxide and reactive hydrocarbons in the exhaust. Spark gap geometry and firing voltage were varied and, within the range tested, had little effect on vehicle performance and emissions using simulated coal gas fuel.

"This work presents the preparation and characterization of a nanocomposite based on Poly(butylene terephthalate) PBT and Brazilian smectitic clay (bentonite chocolate clay). Before being incorporated as clay nanoparticles in PBT resin, the clay was organically modified by the addition of a quaternary salt and sodium carbonate. PBT/Clay nanocomposite (96.3:3.70 wt %) was obtained by using a twin-screw extruder machine. After extrusion process, the nanocomposite was characterized by tensile, flexural and impact tests, SEM, Vicat, HDT, DSC, TGA and XRD tests. The results showed that the properties of the nanocomposite obtained were superior to those of neat PBT. Concerning the temperature of thermal distortion (HDT) an expressive gain of around 45 % was presented to PBT/Clay nanocomposite compared to PBT evidencing the interaction of nanofiller with the polymeric matrix.IntroductionPolymer-clay nanocomposites, also called as polymer layered silicates nanocomposites have attracted much attention from both industry and academia over the past decade because they frequently exhibit unexpected properties. In contrast to the traditional fillers, nanofillers, in particular, nanoclay, is found to be effective. The addition of a small amount (< 5 wt.%) can show significant improvement in mechanical, thermal and barrier properties, flammability resistance, and electrical/electronic properties of the final polymer nanocomposite without requiring special processing techniques. Also, as with other nano-size particles, the overall crystallization rate and the glass transition temperature are also affected. It is generally believed that the improvement of properties of nanoclay composites is directly related to the complete exfoliation of silicate layers in the polymer matrix. However, a processing technique that produces complete exfoliation is still a technical challenge [1,2]."

"A summary is presented of the report completed by the Coal Mining Research Centre in 1980. This report was of a cross-pit conveyor system applied as an auxiliary mining complement to the major stripping unit, a dragline. The purpose of the CMRC report was to evaluate selective mining and replacement of the upper horizons of the strata as an aid in reclamation. These strata were the topsoil, subsoil and glacial till.Past utilization of cross-pit conveyor systems and related engineering studies were assessed. The parameters of the study were based on the mining and geological conditions of the Alberta prairie coal mines. The principal excavator for stripping was a dragline. Excavation of the upper horizons was done by a bucket-wheel excavator discharging onto the crosspit conveyor. Alternative equipment applications were economically compared. Four cases or geological sections were evaluated in detail. The economics of the alternative mining systems for each of the cases were determined. In all instances, the most economical solution was a tandem system utilizing a dragline with a bucket-wheel excavator/ cross-pit conveyor system."

IN STUDYING the structural characteristics of martensite it is desirable that a clear conception of the material from which martensite is produced should first be obtained. Any theory of its formation and structure incompatible with the facts of its parent substance, austenite, can be eliminated with little consideration. Austenite is the name applied to solid solutions of carbon and other elements in gamma iron. At temperatures above about 900° C. (1650°, F.), pure iron exists in a system of crystallinity1 entirely different from the crystal structure below that temperature. This high-temperature allotrope of iron is of an atomic structure associated with great ductility, having very manifold symmetry and an abundance of easy slip planes. The exceptionally ductile and malleable metals (gold, silver, platinum, copper, aluminum, and nickel) have this same atomic arrangement-the face-centered cubic. The low-temperature allotrope of iron, alpha iron, the solid solutions of which are known as ferrite, has a body-centered cubic arrangement of atoms. Like it, in crystal structure, are the less ductile and malleable metals, molybdenum, tungsten, titanium and chromium. Fig. 1. shows the two atomic arrangements known in iron; the diagrams are drawn to scale. Either of these modifications of iron may dissolve other elements in the solid state; by so doing, the temperature of the transformation is changed. In general2-7, it appears that a solid solvent metal dissolves a metal solute by substituting foreign atoms in its own space lattice. Thus, iron may dissolve nickel in either of its crystalline forms by permitting an atom of nickel here and there to occupy the normal position

It is a fair assumption that the main purpose of any diagram is to present facts to the eye in more convenient form than they could be tabulated in figures, and this implies that a screen diagram should set forth in a convenient and familiar form certain facts as to the character of the material screened regardless of the screen standards used, and it seems particularly desirable on account of the well-known differences in the size of openings of different laboratory screens having the same nominal mesh. In making screen-sizing tests it has been customary first to consider the largest size, going progressively to the smallest, and this seems to have led to the practice of placing the smallest size .at the right-hand side of the diagram and measuring toward the left. This is not altogether convenient and might be changed to advantage, but for illustration I have preserved that feature and present the method just as I have used it for over 2 years. Direct plotting in which the intervals on the diagram are proportional to the sizes of the openings, or to the arithmetical difference between them, seems at first sight more natural and is extremely useful for certain purposes, but it makes the diagram very crowded in the smaller screen sizes while the larger ones occupy unnecessary space, making it less convenient for most purposes, and for that reason the method here discussed is the well-known one based on the ratio between openings, and is plotted in logarithms instead of the direct values of the screen opening. Metric coordinate paper is convenient, although not necessary; it is recommended, as the use of the metric scale gives a diagram of convenient size, but any scale of equal parts may be used. In order to make any screen diagram translatable in terms of any standard screen size, it is necessary to have noted on the size scale of the diagram all points corresponding to the openings of the various screens in question, instead of a single series of points as with a single screen. In drawing the diagram assume 0.001 in. (corresponding approximately to 0.025 mm.) to be the smallest size to be considered and fix this as the zero point at the lower right-hand corner of the diagram. This value is selected because the values are to be plotted in logarithms, and the logarithm of 1 is zero. Then lay off to the left for the position of each screen

There is a considerable amount of lignite reserve in the form of thick seams in Turkey. It is rather complicated to predict the characteristics of strata response to mining operation in thick seams. However, a comprehensive evaluation of ground behaviour is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient production, especially when top coal winning by means of caving behind the face is applied. A comprehensive modelling of deformations and induced stresses is vital for the selection of optimum production strategy. In this study, numerical modelling and analysis of a longwall panel at Omerler underground coalmine have been carried out by using the software called FLAC3D developed based on the finite difference technique. Firstly, a 3-D numerical model of the M3 panel has been prepared. Secondly, induced stresses formed around the longwall face have been determined as a function of face advance where the face was located at the bottom of thick coal-seam. Results obtained from modelling studies have revealed that the front abutment vertical stress was maximum at 7 metres in front of the face and magnitude of front abutment stress was found to increase up to a distance of 200 metres away from the face start line. As the face was further advanced after 200 m from the face start line, there was not any significant change in the characteristics of front abutment stresses. Results of numerical analysis of the panel were in good agreement with in situ observations.

To be held from the 9th to 14th April, 1972, in Johannesburg, South Africa. GENERAL INFORMATION The first symposium in the series was staged by the University of Arizona in 1961. Since then Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers have acted together with the University of Arizona as co-sponsors of the series. The 9th Symposium in 1970 was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy together with McGill University and Ecole Poly technique in Montreal. The 10th Symposium, the first to be held outside the North American continent, is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation) in close collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. OBJECTIVES Mineral ventures increase in scale and complexity. The planning and control of these projects requires more and more sophisticated techniques. The intention of the symposium is to pool and exchange experience and knowledge and also to discuss new and potential developments. The papers presented in the main sessions, which will extend over one week, will together indicate progress which has been made in the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods in each of the various aspects of operation in the mineral industry. A coherent account will be developed by consideration, in consecutive sessions, of the stages through which mineral prospects evolve in the course of their life. Primary aims are thus to stimulate discussion in depth of previous applications, to highlight current trends and to provide guidelines for future developments. PARTICIPATION The intention is to bring together persons responsible for managing the various operations in the mineral industry and the workers engaged in the development of mathematical and computer methods relevant thereto. SYMPOSIUM TOPICS 1. Market Analysis-demand and supply trends, models of mineral markets, price prediction. 2. Exploration and ore reserve estimation--exploration strategies, choice of drilling and sampling patterns, quantification of geological information, geo-statistical analysis, ore reserve assessment. Storage and retrieval of associated data. 3. Project design and analysis-influence on viability and risk of capitalisation, scale and method of operation, processing, uncertainties in design premises. 4. Planning of operation-planning and scheduling of construction, of development and of depletion of ore reserves. Logistics, rock mechanics and ventilation. 5. Control of operations-financial, production, cost and quality control as applied to both mining and processing. Flow and processing of relevant information. CALL FOR PAPERS An invitation is extended to intending authors to submit a synopsis, in 200 to 300 words, of papers which would develop the themes outlined above. The Programme Sub-Committee will choose, on the basis of these synopses, some 20 to 30 authors who will be invited to submit papers. Selection will be aimed at the provision of a coherent structure. Other authors may be invited to submit short papers either as contributions to the primary papers or for brief discussion in ancillary sessions which will be scheduled to follow on the main sessions. The official language of the symposium will be English. A tour which will include mineral projects of interest and the Kruger National Game Park will be arranged in the week following the symposium. LADIES&apos; PROGRAMME Arrangements will be made for the reception and entertainment of ladies. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be available at hotels convenient to the symposium venue. The cost of reasonable hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is in the range R5 to RIO (7 to 14 U.S. dollars) per person per night. Qualitatively, galena (native lead sulfide) reacts with aqueous solutions of the xanthates,1 and has its surface sufficiently altered so that there is a tendency for air bubbles to attach themselves to the mineral crystals where there was no such effect before the treatment. This property is utilized in froth flotation operations where the mineral sulfide particles are raised into the froth and the gangue whose surface is not altered remains behind. The results of a study of this reaction were reported2 recently and certain tentative suggestions about the interaction of galena and the alkali xanthates were offered. In this paper, there is set down the results of a detailed quantitative investigation of the ions involved in this interaction with a view to finding out more about the condition existing immediately at the surface of a crystal like a heavy metal sulfide after treatment with an organic reagent. Past experimental experience showed that finely ground galena shaken with aqueous potassium xanthate abstracts xanthate ion and at the same time sulfate ion, reducing ions of the type (SmOn)= where the ratio of m to n is less than 4:l (as in sulfate), sometimes hydroxyl ion, are thrown into solution.3 Ions Involved in Xanthate-galena Interaction The present quantitative study of the galena-aqueous potassium xanthate system shows that at the lower concentrations of potassium xanthate (less than about 25 mg. per liter) the amount of xanthate ion abstracted by the galena can be accounted for by the amount of reducing ions of the (SmOn)= type and sulfate ion thrown into solution. The concepts of long-range, open pit planning presented here are not new. The new idea is how the factors that control the location of the final pit limits can be considered altogether as one large, simultaneous equation. The X, or unknown quantity that is being solved for, is a long-range pit design that fulfills the desired objectives. The objectives of a final pit plan are determination of the extent and location of ore reserves, the allowable stripping necessary to uncover the ore, the final pit surface intercept, final pit topography and the contained metal values in both ore and waste.

The Wellington Dam catchment has high value water, agriculture and coal and power generating resources. These conflicting land uses are managed through consultation and regulation. The Wellington Dam catchment is unique in that the Collie Coal Basin is located almost to the edge of the dam and has coal mining and power generation as its primary land use. Currently the dam is only used for irrigation due to its high salinity. The State Government has committed to reduce the damÆs salt levels to below 600 mg/L by 2015 so that it can be considered for public drinking water supply. The coal industry in conjunction with the community and State Government has worked together to enhance the water quality within the Wellington Dam to maximise its value and use by using mine dewater for industry, diverting saline Collie River flows, providing environmental (social) flows and enhancing water quality of mine voids to encourage new industry to the Collie Region. Both surface and groundwater in the coal basin are generally fresh, whereas the salinity in the Collie River East Branch generally ranges between 3000 to 20 000 mg/L and 1700 to 10 000 mg/L in the South Branch. Mine dewatering is currently two to three times greater than the recharge to the coal basin. As a result, all mine dewater is sent to power stations in the area, with excess discharged into drainage lines which flow into the South Branch of the Collie River. To maintain environmental and social flows some groundwater is also pumped to the South and East Branches of the Collie River during summer months. Completed mine voids are used for recreation and options for aquaculture are promising. However, handback criteria are yet to be finalised.

The ovienlalion of hexagonal a-zirconium crystals in cold-drawn Zircaloy-2 tubes and in both as-extruded and heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pcl ND tubes has been rrleasured using the inverse Pole - figure technique. Uniaxial tensile tests hare shown the Zil-caloy-2 lubes to hare highly anisotropic delovmation behavior whereas heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb tubes are nearly isotropic. The differences in deformation behavior are esbloilred from the observed textures of the tubes and the deformation systems known to oberate in Zircnloy,-3. Tlze vcsults lead to an explanation of the high effective strain observed fov the Zircaloy-2 tubes as colrzpared to heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb tubes in restrained end burst tests at 280° to 300°C. THE Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy. when heat-treated by quenching from temperatures slightly below the (a + p)/P phase boundary and subsequently aged at 500°C, has tensile strengths about 50 pct greater than those of 20 pct cold-worked Zircaloy-2.1 There is. therefore, considerable economic incentive to replace Zircaloy-2 with the heat-treated alloy in some in-reactor applications. notably for pressure tubes, where strength is a prime consideration. However, when tubes of Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb fabricated by extrusion and drawing prior to heat treatment were subjected to restrained end-burst tests at 300 °C. the circumferential expansion at failure1 was only 10 pct that of cold-drawn Zircaloy-2 tubes in similar tests,2 Table I. This result was not predicted from uniaxial tensile tests in which the ductilities of the two materials were quite similar.&apos; The detailed requirement for ductility in pressure vessels has not yet been worked out. and comparison of the relative merits of cold-worked Zircaloy-2 and heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb is further complicated by the irradiation-induced loss of ductility and hydrogen pickup each will undergo from reactor operation.1,2 Nevertheless. the lower circumferential expansion of the Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb tubes raised serious doubts on the advisability of their use as pressure vessels. For this reason, an investigation to determine the cause for different ductilities of the two types of tubes was initiated. "AbstractThe scope of geophysics in civil engineering and the nature of exploration geophysics are briefly discussed. Engineering problems amenable to geophysical attack are illustrated by specific examples. The various methods available, accuracy of results, and costs are treated. The possibilities of new uses of geophysical techniques are pointed out.IntroductionTHE SCOPE of geophysics in engineering is different than in oil or mining exploration. In civil engineering, geophysics solves specific problems; as for example, what is the depth to bed-rock along the axis of a proposed dam? The area to be surveyed is of limited extent, and the subsurface information .sought is relatively near the surface. The engineering geophysicist is not called upon to investigate geological basins or extensive mineralized areas or to probe for data to thousands of feet in depth. The geophysical tools employed in the three fields are, however, quite similar; the differences are mainly in the objectives.The Natural Geophysical ExplorationThe terms geophysics and geophysical exploration have been used heretofore and will .be employed in what follows. The question is, therefore, What is geophysical exploration?Geophysical exploration is a line of field work where measurements are made at the ground surface with special instruments to get geological subsurface information. Application of teleoperated and automated mobile equipment in underground metal mines represents a promising avenue to overcome some of the challenges facing the industry. This paper addresses the issues of overall effectiveness of the autonomous loading and haulage equipment in comparison with conventional man-operated machines. It overviews and discusses the factors affecting availability, utilization and production rate. It puts an emphasis on some problems and risks not present in conventional man-operated systems, as well as their character and criticality. It stresses the need to analyze the factors affecting OEE of the autonomous equipment more in-depth than it has been done up to date and to take them into consideration at the stage of feasibility studies. The paper concludes with some recommendations and indicates the directions of the future research in this field.

PART A. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT – GENERAL Paragraph 1. Electrical Equipment; Examination. All electric equipment shall be examined, tested, and properly main¬tained by a qualified person to assure safe operating conditions. The examinations and tests shall be performed at intervals not exceeding six (6) months unless otherwise specified in Parts A, B, C, D, and E. When a potentially dangerous condition is found on electric equipment, such equipment shall be removed from service until such condition is corrected. A record of such examinations shall be kept and made available to an authorized representative of the Secretary and to the authorized repre¬sentative of the miners in such mine. Each item of major equipment, in¬cluding substations, switchgear, load centers, and so forth except powered hand tools, shall be recorded separately. The record of such examination shall include all dangerous conditions found, corrective action taken, and name of examiner, and shall be signed by the person responsible for main¬taining the equipment in safe operating condition, who shall also be a qualified person. Paragraph 2. Electrical Work; Qualified Personnel. No electrical work shall be performed on electrical distribution circuits or equipment, except by a qualified person or by a person trained to perform electrical work and to maintain electrical equipment under the direct supervision of a qualified person. Disconnecting devices shall be locked out and prominently tagged by the persons who perform such work, except that in cases where locking out is not possible, such devices shall be opened and prominently tagged by such persons. Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (CSAMT) surveys were carried out by Glass Earth (New Zealand) Limited (Glass Earth) in 2006 - 2007 to investigate epithermal gold targets in the central North Island of New Zealand. The surveys were conducted using a Zonge GDP 32 8-channels receiver and a Zonge XMT 32 transmitter powered by a 16 KW generator. The electric field dipole was maintained at 20 m length (five dipoles per 100 m spread) and the frequency ranged from 4 KHz to 4 Hz. Only scalar (TM mode) signals were recorded, using one magnetic coil per spread. The transmitter bipoles were 1 - 4 km in length and located about 5 to 10 km from each survey area. &nbsp; Sixteen individual target areas were surveyed by June 2007. The CSAMT survey lines (100 - 400 m spacing) were determined mainly on results from previous ultra-detailed airborne magnetic and gravity surveys conducted by Glass Earth in 2005. The data from each CSAMT line was carefully examined to remove any spurious signals and processed using Zonge SCS2D software, which can produce smooth 2D resistivity inversions of the field data. The results were presented as resistivity sections and maps to help the identification of exploratory drilling targets, mainly from the existence of subsurface high resistivity zones (resistors) that can be interpreted as caused by silicification associated with epithermal mineralization. &nbsp; An example of processing and interpretation of the CSAMT data is presented in this paper on results from Glass EarthÆs Tahunaatara target, where CSAMT surveys have identified zones of epithermal mineralization confirmed by exploratory drilling.

The reinforcement mechanism of suspension effect is analyzed based on beam-column theory. The equations of the maximum bending stress, deflection and transferred bolt load for the bolted roof strata are derived. In the analysis, the bolt load is assumed to be point load and the horizontal stress is uniformly applied to each stratum. The reinforcement mechanism of friction effect is also analyzed. The major function of roof bolting in this case is to create the friction¬al resistance by tensioning the roof bolts, thereby the individual thin strata are "welded" into one single thick stratum. Based on the results, equal spacing of roof bolts is used in the suspension effect while for friction effect, the bolts should be spaced based on equal shear force concept. The design nomographs for the proper bolting pattern and bolt ten¬sion of mechanical roof bolting systems are presented for practical applications.

Uranium precipitation from an eluate using hydrogen peroxide has been studied in a laboratory continuous unit. The important process parameters were the dosage of H2O2, reaction pH and chloride ion concentration. In the process, the alkaline eluate is acidified to a pH of 2, then H2O2 at 110%-130% of the stoichiometric requirement is added, and finally NaOH is added to maintain a pH of 4 for one hour to complete the precipitation and settling. The chloride content in the system is controlled to 50g/L or below by rejecting part of the decant solution. The process has been successfully employed in commercial operations. The uranium recovery is complete, while the precipitate settles rapidly and can be processed to high purity yellow cake without filtration.

The mineralogy of the platinum group metals is fairly complex, and it is therefore not surprising that the different minerals have variable responses to metallurgical processes, in particular, flotation and leaching. The PLATSOL® leach process was developed to extract simultaneously base metals, gold and platinum group metals from various materials. Extensive research has indicated that most PGM?s were amenable to the PLATSOL process, with the notable exception of cooperite PtS. Further work showed that a thermal pretreatment at 500-700ºC transformed the structure of the cooperite and similar refractory minerals (Pt,Pd)S into Pt metal and Pt-Pd alloys that responded well to the PLATSOL® process. Examples are presented of the mineralogy of PGM concentrates as produced, in the residue from the PLATSOL® leach and after thermal pretreatment.
