In July 1982 the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety completed its study of safety in U.S. underground coal mines; the results of the study were published in the National Research Council report entitled Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines. One of the findings of this study was: THERE IS A STRONG CORRELATION BETWEEN MINE SIZE AND FATAL INJURIES. THE FATALITY RATE IN MINES WITH 50 OR FEWER EMPLOYEES IS NEARLY THREE TIMES THAT OF LARGE MINES (WITH OVER 250 EMPLOYEES), AND ABOUT TWICE THAT OF INTERMEDIATE-SIZED MINES (WITH 51-250 EMPLOYEES). Although the Committee explored possible reasons for the higher fatality rate in the smaller mines, it was not able to explain this phenomenon fully. Therefore the Bureau of mines requested that the Committee undertake a supplementary study of fatalities in small underground coal mines. The Committee met in the fall of 1982, discussed the problem, developed an approach to it, approved a program of statistical analyses, and authorized a panel of four committee members to explore the problem in greater depth. The panel, in turn, reviewed the results of the statistical analyses and met with the president of the National Independent Coal Operators Association and with several owners of small underground coal mines for a detailed discussion of the unique problems of small mines. Panel members examined 66 individual fatality reports prepared by Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors who investigated fatal accidents that occurred in small underground coal mines in 1979 and 1980. This report is the result of those studies, analyses, and deliberations. The first draft was prepared by the panel, but the report has been reviewed and approved by the entire Committee.

The new structure of The Institute is vital as we move forward in times of globalisation, rationalism, increasing litigation, criminalisation of risk and increased focus on corporate governance. This address looks forward to ways The AusIMM and professionals of the future are positioning themselves for these and other challenges.

Though the burning of fuels extends far back into antiquity, and though fuel beds are the most common and widely distributed example of chemical actions and engineering practice, there has been little attempt to group fuel beds by types or to define the principles associated with them. This paper does not profess to cover completely the subject of fuel beds. It suggests some of the over-all principles of the two more common types. No new investigational data are included, but the deductions are largely based on a recent publication of the U.S. Bureau of Mines'. Definition of Types There are three primary types of fuel beds: (I) Underfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in the same direction; (2) overfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in opposite directions; (3) crossfeed, in which the fuel and the air move at right angles to each other. The principle that fixes the type is the relation between directions of the flow of fuel and of air. Fig. 1 shows the three types diagrammatically. All other types are compounded of these three in a simple or more or less complex manner. It does not follow that these three type designations are limited to the methods used in representing them in Fig. 1; they may be turned in any direction, and as long as the relative directions of the fuel and air are the same the type is not changed. For example, A as shown .resembles a pot-type stoker, but the air and fuel can move downward as in the so-called smokeless heating boiler furnace. Also, C can be placed horizontal, as in chain-grate stokers. For this reason, the terms used to designate the three types are not all that could be desired; more logical ones could be coined, but those used probably are satisfactory until the discussion of fuel-bed types becomes more common.

This paper begins with a short history of air compressors, emphasizing their "roots" in the mining industry. It then describes the types of compressors available, including reciprocal, the various rotary positive-displacement compressors, and the centrifugal. The advantages and disadvantages of selecting a certain type of compressor over another are enumerated, considering customer requirements and operating costs, among other factors. Guidelines to operation and maintenance are discussed, including installation, monitoring and maintenance procedures. Finally, the paper addresses itself to future trends, with special attention being given to the system concept, the increasing use of rotary compressors, power consumption, reliability, packaging and noise attenuation.

"EXECUTIVE SUMMARYINTRODUCTIONThe commercial incentives for using molten aluminum in casting operations are numerous and substantial. Although these incentives apply broadly to both shape castings (foundry) operations and wrought alloy production, the merit of a particular motive is indeed downstream processing sensitive. Melting cost reduction is a universal incentive that impacts on essentially all aluminum products. At a natural gas burner cost of $4.50 per therm, for example, the reverberatory furnace energy cost is at least $0.01 per pound of aluminum melted, exclusive of melt loss, fixed costs, and other expenses. The Aluminum Statistical Review' cited 3.188 million metric tons of secondary aluminum that was recovered by the industry in 1995. This represents a re-melt energy cost of over $70 million. Other incentives to use molten secondary aluminum include throughput enhancement, metal chemistry assurances, environmental considerations, and the avoidance of an in-house scrap processing operation.A traditional disincentive to use molten secondary aluminum is metal quality. If a particular secondary processing operation was successful in achieving and preserving an acceptable metal quality level prior to shipment, the subsequent metal transfer and ladle delivery events would frequently obviate these efforts. For example, a metal superheat on the order of several hundred degrees is required for an unheated transfer ladle to travel 3 to 4 hours to a customer location. The rate of the y-alumina formation reaction approximately doubles for every 120°F increase in temperature, therefore, the effect of excess superheat on melt loss and metal quality is considerable. Deposition of hard chromium coatings using electrodeposition is accompanied by emission of hexavalent chromium mists which is a carcinogenic. Hence alternative chromium deposition technologies are being investigated. Sputter deposition is a strong candidate to economically deposit hard chromium coatings in an environmentally friendly way. Chromium coatings of 2-3 µ m thickness were deposited on plain carbon steel coupons using RF magnetron sputter deposition. Depositions were carried out with 0 to 22 vol% nitrogen in the plasma. Structure of the coatings was studied using x-ray diffraction analysis With increasing nitrogen contents, formation of the two nitride phases was observed. The pure chromium phase was detected in coatings with up to 7% nitrogen in the sputtering gas. The solid solution of nitrogen in the pure Cr phase coating was identified by shifts of Cr x-ray diffraction peaks to higher d-spacing. The microhardness of the coatings deposited at a substrate temperature of 200°C showed an increase in hardness with increasing nitrogen content from 600 kgf/mm2 (5.9 GPa) at 0% nitrogen to I250 kgf/mm2 (I2.25 GPa) at 9.5 % nitrogen and a subsequent decrease in hardness to I 100 kgf/mm2 (11 GPa) beyond 9.5 % nitrogen in the sputtering gas. This corresponds to the formation of the hard Cr2N phase, at 9.5 % nitrogen, and CrN phase, at I5.7 % nitrogen. The reported bulk hardness values of Cr2N and CrN are I600 kgf/mm2 (I5.7 GPa) and I 100 kgf/mm2 (11 GPa) respectively. For pure Cr phase coatings, there is a slight increase in hardness for coatings deposited at 7. I % nitrogen from that without nitrogen in the sputtering gas. This could possibly result from the solid solution strengthening of the Cr lattice by nitrogen. For films deposited at 200°C, phases of the deposited films seem to be the overwhelming factor in controlling the microhardness.

Having been occupied in inspecting and testing iron and steel these twenty years in England, and previous to that having served on the Board of Iron Masters in Sweden, I have naturally been very much interested in the subject of the use of steel for structures. I regret that I can offer but comparatively small experience on that had, having had principally to do with steel for railway plant and rails, but granting these to be a kind of "structure," and also that steel for rails has similar duties to perform in many respects, and is generally manufactured in the same way and at the same works as steel for stuctures, properly speaking, I may be entitled to offer an opinion on the use of steel in construction. In a paper recently presented to the Institution of Civil Engineers in London, Mr. Ewing Matheson has recommended that the Board of Trade rules should be amended so as to allow of a maximum straining of 8 tolls per square inch instead of 6 1/2 tons. But it is equally necessary to fix the amount of ductility or elongation of the metal for such a strain as 8 tons. Strength and ductility should always be spoken of together. Mr. Matheson says that steel can be manipulated in the factory in the same way and with the same tools as are used for iron. This can only be granted for mild steel; for hard steel would be spoilt by the rough mechanical treatment which iron can stand, such as punch ing, for instance; and the remedy for regaining the strength lost by punching hard steel, viz., annealing, cannot always be applied. Noth ing proves this fact better than the punching of steel rails of consid erable hardness, which caused fractures at an early period of steelunaking, and which resulted in the stipulation for drilling instead of punching the bolt-holes, which had been formerly applied to iron rails without any damage. This chapter deals with the concepts of shock waves and detonation waves together, because a detonation wave is really a shock wave, supported by the explosive reaction that the shock wave ignites and propagates as it travels through the explosive material. In the context of rock blasting, furthermore, there is justification for treating shock waves and detonation waves together, because the mechanical effect of the detonation in an explosive in a drillhole in rock is propagated and its effects are spread throughout the surrounding rock by means of a shock wave. The overall performance of an explosive in rock blasting or any other application is of course dependent on how much thermal energy is released in the chemical reaction that occurs when the material detonates, and on how much useful mechanical work the reaction products can do as they expand. A major portion of this chapter deals with the prediction and measurement of explosive performance, a subject which is now still in a process of rapid development.

Asbestos is a natural mineral fibre which has been known and utilized commercially for about a century. From the forties, it was employed on an ever-increasing scale throughout the mechanical engineering, building, paper-making and plastics sectors, to name but a few. There are essentially five minerals which provide fibres for industrial applications, namely, the chrysotile variety of serpentine and the amphiboles such as riebeckite, anthophyllite, cummingtonite-grunerite (amosite) and tremolite. About a fifth of the world's asbestos output was once taken by Europe for the manufacture of asbestos-cement products, reinforced plastics, paper and cardboard, panels, soft insulation and spray-on powders. However, in the sixties and seventies the hypothesis regarding the pathogenic nature of asbestos fibres started to gain ground. Moreover, between the sixties and eighties the EU issued a series of regulations designed to bring about a steady decrease in asbestos consumption. This line of action has culminated in recent years in a whole set of directives banning the use of asbestos in all products. This created a major problem, namely, how to clean-up the several million tons of various types of asbestos products in various states of conservation existing in Western Europe. CORDIAM (Pat. RM95 A 000269 and Pat. RM96 A 000782 in the name of ECOTEC S.r.1.) is one of the thermal inertization techniques recently proposed for this purpose. The process provides for the low-temperature ceramization of the toxic-harmful material. Of course, with such a great variety of waste materials and the volumes to be treated, as well as the need to ensure the correct dimensional design of the thermal sections of the treatment plant, it is necessary to know as much as possible about the thermal behaviour of the wastes concerned. This paper details the steps taken firstly to ascertain the thermal behaviour of such materials as may be encountered in day-to-day practice and secondly to examine the influence of the main process parameters on the preliminary design of gas- or fuel-oil-fired rotary kilns of the kind used for waste treatment.

I must, however, confess to considerable doubts about the validity of the distribution of gold in "free" and "locked" form set out in Tables I to IV.

Whether you are an employee, contractor or consultant working in the mineral industry, there are pressures to deliver the best possible performance. Technical professionals are usually driven by an internal desire to perform to a high standard because of personal pride in their profession, but there are an increasing number of external requirements to demonstrate that the actions taken were based upon reasonable grounds and that the work conformed to current best practice. People expect these best practice procedures to be followed and governments are now requiring those tendering for contracts to be registered in some way and to be participants in quality assurance schemes. One is not immune to these pressures just because you are working in a less legislatively sophisticated developing country in the circum-Pacific rim (Pacrim) region.

The key aspects of process metallurgy that distinguish platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate smelting from that of other base metal sulphide concentrates are presented. These differences include considerably higher input chrome and magnesia contents that directly raise the slag liquidus temperature and have the potential to increase accumulations of refractory spinels. Most importantly, the higher processing temperature required for PGM smelting and the resulting very high matte superheat lead to considerably more onerous smelting conditions than those typical of other smelting operations. This has presented challenges to furnace design and integrity, especially when coupled with the progressive intensification of smelting, involving doubling, and then redoubling, of furnace power inputs over the past 20 years. These power increases have been enabled by increasingly more advanced furnace cooling and structural technologies. Key technologies include strong constant-force spring-loaded bindings acting in three dimensions to minimize infiltration of superheated matte into brick joints, and robust well-cooled tapholes for reliably tapping the superheated matte. The result has been substantially improved productivity, and reduced smelting capital cost outlay per unit of production. A significant challenge, which was not anticipated, presented itself in the form of insidious corrosion of the furnace lining, and especially high-intensity copper cooling elements. Investigation of corrosion in related industries eventually identified chloride-accelerated sulphidation', and this term has been retained as it generically describes the most pertinent aspects of the accelerated low-temperature wear of copper coolers observed in PGM smelting. In addition to discussing the corrosion mechanism, this paper describes a number of solutions that were developed jointly by Anglo American Platinum and Hatch to address the copper corrosion problem. First, new monitoring technologies allowed furnaces to be operated more safely for a longer period of time. Second, a system for replacing corroded coolers from outside the furnace during a fast 'hot' shutdown minimized the impact on furnace operating factor and hearth life. Finally, a corrosion-resistant graphite-protected cooler design significantly improved furnace campaign life, and heralds a more lasting solution to cooler corrosion in PGM furnaces.

The Quality index is a useful tool allowing to assess the metallurgical quality of aluminium AlSiMg foundry alloys (A356/357). Its value is calculated from the ultimate tensile strength and elongation; it increases with the metallurgical quality of the casting, i.e. with finer dendrites, lower microporosity and inclusion count and lower iron content. This Quality index does not depend on the degree of temper applied during the heat treatment (aging time and temperature). After defining the Quality index, it will be explained how it can be predicted from the knowledge of the local solidification conditions obtained from modelling. The paper will then present four case studies of castings for which the prediction of the Quality index by modelling was made. These case studies from different authors will involve the three most common casting processes used for producing high integrity aluminium castings, namely: sand casting, permanent mould casting and investment casting (lost wax). In all cases, the accuracy of the prediction will be assessed by comparing the predicted Quality index distributions to the experimental values based on the published measured values of the local tensile properties.

MEIERAN and Richman' have proposed a method for the determination of electron-diffraction patterns from twinned bcc crystals. It is the purpose of this note to present a general method capable of predicting the positions of all reflections from both matrix and twin regions for all possible orientations of cubic crystals. The method has been verified for twinning in explosively deformed copper, and is found to be a very useful tool when used in conjunction with stereographic projection, and dark-field electron microscopy. Let an isometric crystal be twinned in any (hkl) plane. The twinning can be considered either as a reflection in the twin plane or as a 180-deg rotation about the twin axis. In reciprocal space, the 180-deg rotation about the twin axis would place a given point p, q, Y to a new position P, Q,R, such that both will be equally inclined to the twin axis. This is represented in Fig. 1. If the coordinates of three such pairs of points are determined, the matrix of the transformation can be obtained.' It is also seen that such pairs would satisfy another condition, i.e., the vector [p,q,r] plus the vector [P,Q,R] will yield a multiple of hkl, i.e., the indices of the twin plane, because in isometric systems the axis [hkl] is perpendicular to the plane (hkl). This can be simplified by taking the points along the three axes. If a point h2 + k2 + 12, 0, 0 is taken along the x axis, it is seen that its new indices should be so as to yield a sum 2h2, 2hk, 2hl,i.e., 2h(h,k,1). (Also the points h2 - k2 - 12, 2hk, 2h1, and h2 + k2 + 12, 0, 0 are equidistant from the origin and both points make equal angles with the twin axis, i.e., cos-' h/dh2 + k2 + l2.) Similar operations for the points yield respectively, after the 180-deg rotation about the twin axis. Several disastrous and a great number of near-disastrous mine fires have been started by igniting the combustible conductor insulation and outer covering of trailing cables. Those who have had experience in fighting such fires know that they are extremely difficult to combat and extinguish owing to the irritating and noxious gases, fumes and vapors evolved from evaporation, distillation and combustion of the sundry compounds used in the construction of cables. When electric-motor-driven coal-cutting machines were first introduced in coal mines, the electricity was transmitted to the apparatus by two single-conductor trailing cables. Later, two-conductor parallel and concentric types were developed. These early cables were made with the materials available at that time with relatively little thought given to using new materials or utilizing the old to the best advantage. The copper conductors were stranded to give flexibility, but there were too few strands and the method of laying them was such that they did not endure well the stresses of twisting and pulling, to which trailing cables used in mines are usually subjected. The rubber insulating compounds used were not satisfactory in resisting water, high temperature, and the crushing stresses encountered in mine service. The outer coverings were cotton or jute braids saturated with tars or asphalts having relatively no abrasive resistance. In fact, the only consideration given to trailing cable design because of its extremely short life, was to construct it at the lowest possible cost. With increased electrification and mechanization, more serious problems were encountered. Cables used in mines were exposed to more severe conditions than in any other industry. The excessive overload currents, poor heat dissipation, severe abrasion, crushing loads from falling material, runovers, and any of the other things that tend to destroy cable, called for vast improvement in trailing cable design for mine use. About 1918, one manufacturer who recognized the need for improving the toughness of cables in order to obtain greater safety and longer life, developed a special rope-stranded conductor, a superior rubber insulation compound and a tough rubber sheath or jacket compound. As a result of this type of construction, broken conductor strands were practically eliminated, the insulating material withstood high temperature without undue disintegration, and the jacket, similar to that used for automobile tire tread, had high abrasion resistance, high tear resistance, and was waterproof. While the initial cost of these cables was higher than the jute-filled braided types, this disadvantage was more than offset by increased safety and longer service. Cables with these improved characteristics were first installed in mines in 1920. Since 1930, the use of braided trailing cables in coal mines has been almost completely supplanted by the more superior types, employing high-grade rubber compounds for insulation and sheath. A series of field and laboratory evaluations were conducted in order to characterize the effects of a Mann+Hummel SMF-AR® diesel particulate filter (DPF) system on the aerosols and criteria gases emitted by diesel engines. This system, with a durable sintered metal filter media and available active regeneration via an on-board electrical heater, has been considered for retrofitting diesel engines used in light- and medium-duty underground mining applications. Two DPF systems were installed on a forklift and locomotive from the underground mining fleet of the Vale?s Creighton Mine and evaluated over a 1,500-hour trial. This evaluation was complemented with field and laboratory emissions tests. The field tests were performed on the vehicles while at the Creighton Mine surface shop. During those tests, the emissions were assessed for the engines operated at hydraulic stall, high idle, and low idle conditions. The laboratory tests were executed at the diesel engine emissions laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), here the DPF removed from the forklift was further evaluated at four steady-state engine operating conditions as well as at transient conditions using a custom-designed duty cycle. Very similar methodologies were used during field and laboratory tests to measure concentrations of aerosols and criteria gases in the diesel exhaust, both upstream and downstream of the DPF system. The concentrations and size distributions of aerosols were measured using a fast mobility particle sizer spectrometer, in exhaust diluted by a partial flow dilution system. The concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, and NO2 were measured in the raw exhaust using a Fourier transform infra-red spectrometer. Both field and laboratory emissions tests showed that the evaluated DPF systems were very effective in reducing aerosol emissions from all tested engines, and for all test conditions. The systems were found to have minor effects on gaseous emissions from those engines. The findings from this study should help the mining industry to better understand the benefits and challenges of using DPF systems to control the exposure of underground miners to diesel aerosols.
