"The St-Honoré carbonatite complex, located 8 miles north of Chicoutimi, Quebec, was discovered in September 1967 as abnormal radioactivity was detected in the course of SOQUEM's aerial surveys. The complex, covered by a shallow layer of Trenton limestone, has been explored by aeromagnetic, ground gravimetric and magnetic surveys, and 12,013 feet of diamond drilling. Its age, from potassium-argon dating, is 650 million years. The carbonatite is approximately kidney-shaped and has a surface area of 6 square miles, 20 per cent of which is explored. It shows a central core of coarse-grained massive dolomitic carbonatite and an outer ring of foliated dolomitic carbonatite.The exploration work to date has resulted in the discovery, in the foliated carbonatite, of an incompletely drilled niobium (columbium) zone of pyrochlore-bearing carbonatite, at least 1,000 by 800 feet in size. This zone contains 5,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.86 per cent Nb205 or at least 15,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.66 per cent Nb205 or 45,000 tons grading 0.48 per cent Nb20s. The pyrochlore contains an average of 64 per cent Nb,Os. The central core contains a zone of rare-earth-bearing carbonatite (as monazite), grading up to 4.5 per cent rare-earth oxide, 3,500 ppm zinc and 290 ppm molybdenum. Stocks of nepheline syenite and magnetite diorite accompany the carbonatite. The total analysis and trace-element contents of typical rocks are presented."

"More than 400 plants in the world are able to accumulate nickel in their aerial parts at concentrations higher than 10 g per kg of dry biomass. Then, nickel (Ni) can be recovered from the biomass of these hyperaccumulator plants. Agromining is a chain consisting in growing such plants and recovering metal and has been developed thanks to the combined know-how of agronomy and hydrometallurgy. Plants can be grown on serpentine soils, containing rather high concentrations of Ni, on sterile heaps or on contaminated soils. This crop enables us to extract Ni from secondary resources, and to improve soil quality by lowering its metal content. For example, Alyssum murale can be grown at the field scale in the Balkans, at yields corresponding to 110 kg Ni per hectare.Hydrometallurgical processes have been designed from the lab scale to the pilot scale to produce nickel salts: ANSH (ammonium and nickel sulphate hexahydrate), nickel sulphate, acetate, etc. and so on. These salts are used for surface treatment and in the paint and chemical industry. Ni salts are prepared from ashes, after plant calcination. Processes are based on the conventional methods of hydrometallurgy: acid leaching followed by different precipitation steps. These processes will be presented, as well as the pilot scale design. A life cycle assessment has been performed and clearly shows the environmental interest of this approach as a potential part of an anti-erosion strategy. An economic assessment has proved process feasibility and the final step is the launching of a start-up. At the moment, the approach is widened to other metals (cadmium, cobalt) and rare earth elements (REEs)."

The perennial challenge facing mining and minerals operators is to improve productivity, usually by a combination of cost reduction and performance improvement. In a typical production situation involving mining and processing activities, the standard approach has long been to seek improvements in each activity, effectively in isolation from each other. However, the realisation is growing that there is considerable potential to achieve really substantial productivity gains by much improved integration of mining and processing with the key being to consider what is best in the total sense. Some of the linkages between fragmentation in mining and downstream processing are considered in this paper. These linkages involve technical, operational and economic Considerations.

You probably haven't all had the opportunity of reading it, but you very soon will. I found it interesting to note that the results predicted were surpassed in the operation of the plant to date. The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. Thank you very much, Mr Meyburgh, for an interesting paper. We have a long list of contributors, and I am not going to waste any more time. "Between 1934 and 1956, nearly 31 million grams of gold were produced in the Matachewan area from deposits on properties belonging to Young-Davidson Mines Limited and Matachewan Consolidated Mines Limited. In 1979, production from these properties was renewed by Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited.Most of the gold produced has come from relatively lowgrade deposits (3.4 gl t or less) that occur in an east-trending belt of dykes and irregular bodies of trachytic syenite. Although small by comparison, these deposits have some of the characteristics of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits. The mineralized syenite contains up to 5 per cent disseminated pyrite and is highly fractured and cut by quartz and quartzcarbonate veinlets. Gold occurs as native gold along fractures, in quartz veinlets and as minute inclusions in pyrite. Minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, molybdenite and galena are also present. Mineralization was accompanied by potassic alteration, consisting mainly of potassium feldspar.Some gold was also produced from small, but higher-grade, deposits in volcanic rocks. These deposits occur near the syenite-hosted deposits and consist of quartz veins and stringers mineralized .with pyrite and gold. Minor gold is present in some low-grade, porphyry-type copper-molybdenum occurrences and, locally, in large, isolated quartz veins.Lead isotope analyses suggest that the gold deposits were formed at about 2700 Ma and were locally remobilized at approximately 2400 Ma, following the Kenoran orogeny. The deposits appear to be genetically related to felsic magmas emplaced in an epizonal environment and deposited from hydrothermal solutions relatively concentrated in S and K20."

THE study of anisotropy in metals has been greatly stimulated in recent years by the rapid development of X-ray methods for determining the crystallographic relationships of wrought and annealed materials. Prior to this time the knowledge regarding the directional properties of commercial alloys consisted almost exclusively of observations of a practical nature made during the fabrication of metal objects, supplemented by a limited number of mechanical tests on specimens cut at various angles to the direction of working. Such observations clearly indicate that the common methods of cold-working metals cause both a crystallographic and a mechanical fibering varying in character and degree according to the nature and extent of the deforming process. Even after annealing, following certain not too well known combinations of reductions and anneals, a preferred orientation may exist, thereby constituting a residual fiber effect sufficiently pronounced to manifest directional properties. With the application of the X-ray the experimental horizon was extended chiefly because the study of anisotropic metals promised to offer direct and quantitative evidence regarding the involved mechanism of fragmentation and plastic flow. As a natural consequence the intensive studies in this direction have yielded a vast accumulation of data of ultimate potential value. Unfortunately, however, as is commonly the case in entering a virgin field of experimentation, many of the data cannot be molded into complete and coherent form because of the many unrelated conditions of the experimental projects. Again, the results of the study of single crystals have been rather naturally but at times indiscriminately applied to polycrystalline metals. Furthermore, sweeping statements have been made regarding the behavior during working and annealing of metals and alloys, entirely on the basis of similarity in lattice arrangement. There is abundant reason for believing that relatively small concentration variables, differences, in magnitude and distribution of applied stresses, and the character of associated annealing treatments may in some cases greatly influence the mechanics of flow and consequently largely determine the final structural characteristics of the metal.

several days before leaving Buffalo; influenza developed, and when his train reached Nashville, Tenn., he was too ill to continue his journey and was taken to the Kissam Hall Hospital, Vanderbilt University, where he died of pneumonia. He was a young man of unusual ability and high moral character, always brigh.t, happy and kind, faithful and honorable in all things; loved by both his associates and those under his authority. His life and character cannot be better described than by the following quotation from one of his superior officers: "Lieutenant Ohnsorg was a man loved by all of us, always cheerful, just and kind, with unusual executive ability. We can never expect to find a man who has his ability and fine temperament and his position can never be sled as he filled it." He was happily married and leaves to mourn his loss a wife, Constance E. (Rogers) Ohnsorg and a baby girl born since his death, Nov. 29, 1918, a father, W. H. Ohnsorg, mother, Ida May Ohnsorg, and a sister, Mrs. Stuart Strathy McNair. He was a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and of the Florida Phosphate Miners' Association. Lieutenant Edward Hale Perry At the height of the first great German'offensive -of'the Spring of 1918, Edward Hale Perry, of Boston, First Lieutenant, Company D, Sixth Regiment Engineers, U. S. Army, was killed on March 30, near War fusee—Aban-court, Picardy, France, while defending the Boisdes Tailloux against the terrific plunge aimed at Amiens. Lieutenant Perry was born in Boston, Jan. 23, 1887, the son of Georgianna W. and the late Charles F. Perry. After completion of his college preparatory course, he travelled for a year in South America and Europe before entering Harvard with the class of 1910. It might have been regarded as the natural thing for Perry, upon graduation, to choose a path that would lead to a business or professional career at home, but there were in his character a solidity, a horror of sham, a contempt for the "soft" things, and a love-of the open which caused him to be attracted to a life of stern and sturdy reality. Accordingly, he entered the graduate mining school at Harvard, and received the degree of Mining Engineer in 1913. In the meantime, two summers spent in Western mining camps had at-

"Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

The magnetite orebody at Pea Ridge strikes NE-SH and dips at about 800 to the SE. The ore is high grade magnetite with a strike length of over 600-m and a maximum width of over 180-m on some of the levels. The shape and the mineral content of the iron orebody have been fairly consistent so far. The iron ore and surrounding basement rocks are Precambrian in age. These rocks are usually very competent, about 400-m of sediments lie over the ore.

"The primary objective of this research project is to study the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. Secondary objectives include the investigation of the acoustic emission technique as an indirect method for coal dust characterization and remote bit wear monitoring. The results of the project will be useful in developing efficient coal cutting techniques which significantly reduce the harmful coal dust components, and in providing methods for remote monitoring of bit condition and associated coal dust character. This paper will outline recent experiments carried out on coal under uniaxial compression, linear single-bit cutting, and cutting using a laboratory-scale, single-bit shearer. During the experiments acoustic emission and a variety of other mechanical parameters were monitored. · A commercially available artificial intelligence computer package, namely: JCEPAK (Intelligent Classifier Engineering Package), has been utilized to provide a powerful and objective means for AE waveform analysis. This program is able to evaluate a number of features of each AE event and to make objective comparisons between AE signals associated with different loading or cutting parameters. Finally, the paper will discuss the results obtained from a variety of coal breakage tests.INTRODUCTIONStudies to date clearly indicate that the reduction of the severity, and eventual elimination, of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) depends on gaining fundamental understanding in a number of major areas. These include dust generation and entrainment, transportation, suppression, medical effects of dust and possible treatment. At present a project is underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which will make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. Suitable on-line analysis of monitored AE data would allow engineers to evaluate factors such as shearer bit condition and cutting efficiency, and to quantify the particle size and shape distribution of the generated dust. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal cutting procedures. This paper will outline recent experiments on coal under uniaxial compression, linear single-bit cutting, and cutting using a laboratory-scale, single-bit shearer. Additional information on these studies are presented elsewhere [4]."

With the increasing trend to continuous smelting and converting, granulation of copper matte is gaining prominence as a means of decoupling the smelting and converting operations. Moreover, granulation is also being seen as a possible avenue to using higher grade oxygen in converters. By feeding cold solid matte, the oxygen concentration can be increased to compensate for the lower enthalpy feed. This leads to a higher grade of SO2 in the off gas and a lower total flow rate. Current granulation technology relies on the cooling of a falling matte film by water jets. This technology while effective has several drawbacks including those related to safety. Noranda and McGill University have developed a new process (patent pending) for solidifying copper matte (or slag). It overcomes many of the negatives of current technology. The system is based on an air cooled twin roll caster. This: new system uses no water and instead incorporates heat pipe technology to transfer the heat from the solidifying matte to the cooling air to produce a thin strip of 1 to 2 mm in thickness. Testing of a prototype unit demonstrated its viability. This paper describes this newly developed, twin roll casting system that is completely waterless. The advantages of this process as well as the findings from several tests are also detailed.

"Human society evolved from an agricultural to industrial and, subsequently, to a service society. As the resource requirements for each stage of this development differ, trends of metal and energy consumption are related to shifts in society. The increase pattern of supplemental energy is similar to that of mineral production throughout the world. Low positive and stable long-term increasing occurred before 1950, whereas they increased quickly after 1950, especially between 1950 and 1973. A substantial decline in· the growth of energy and mineral production began in 1973 and lasted until the early 1980s. Production of energy resources has recently begun to increase again at a high growth rate in the world. Observing the consumption trends of energy and key metals, it is clarified that increasing patterns can be thought in three stages.IntroductionHuman society evolved from an agricultural to industrial and, subsequently, to a service society. As the resource requirements for each stage of this development differ, trends of metal and energy consumption are related to shifts in society [1-3]. Humphreys [4] described that both the non-ferrous metal consumption and the construction material consumption showed a similar trend dropping markedly in the UK over the period 1960-1992. On the other hand, per GDP (Gross Domestic Product) consumption, that is, the intensity of use of construction materials has declined sharply over the past 30 years, more so than the intensity of metal use in the USA [5]. Nishiyama [6] observed that increase pattern of supplemental energy is similar to that of mineral production throughout the world."

A NUMBER of detailed investigations of the physical changes accom-panying age-hardening have raised the question as to the possibility of some phenomenon preceding the actual process of precipitation. There is considerable evidence to indicate that in the first stages of the aging process there is a pronounced distortion of the crystal lattice. This is particularly marked in duralumin. It would be of considerable theo-retical interest to know the nature of this distortion as compared with that produced in other ways and to find out whether, in supersaturated alloys, it is a necessary antecedent to the formation of a second phase by precipitation. It was believed that a study of the age-hardening char-acteristics of a normally aged alloy compared with one that had been mechanically distorted might supply some useful information on these points. In addition, information would be obtained regarding the effect of a mechanical distortion on any subsequent stage in the aging process. Duralumin was chosen as the material for this investigation because the various aspects of its aging behavior can be shown in detail by suit-able variations of the aging temperature. Also, probably more work has been done on this class of alloys than on any other. In spite of the many published results, it was felt that the experiments would be significant only if all of the work were done on samples from the same source and if they were examined under identical experimental conditions.

Introduction A wealth of information exists which deals with electrical grounding, both from a general viewpoint and from a specifically mine-oriented approach. Many parameters must be investigated in order to thoroughly cover all of the variables which govern the performance of electrical grounding systems. The emphasis of this work on open-pit practices re- presents a new development in the field of grounding research, and an exhaustive review of the relevant historical documentation is especially desirable. Grounding System Purposes What purposes are served by a grounding system? The answer is four-fold and may be summarized as follows. First, it must limit potential gradients between conducting materials in a given area (56). When a phase conductor comes into contact with a machine frame, current flows through the equipment, which tends to become elevated above ground by an amount equal to the voltage on the conductor. If a man were to touch the machine while he was simultaneously connected to ground in some manner, his body would also tend to become elevated in potential, possibly to a lethal extent. Thus, the grounding system should provide a low- resistance path for the fault current to return to the source. The maxi- mum potential to which a man could be exposed when touching a machine frame is equal to the voltage drop along the ground conductors inside the power cable, as shown in Figure 1 (54). INTRODUCTION Tochibora Mine belonged to Kamioka Mines, which are located in Gifu Prefecture, the cen- tral part of the Japanese main island, has occupied the important position as a main source of silver, lead and zinc for the smelter of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd.. The annual production of crude ore goes up to about 1 mil- lion metric tons with average grades of 20g/t Ag. 0.31% Pb, and 4.18% Zn. For the last 20 years, the mine has struggled with the depressed zinc metal price in yen and the escalation of operating cost, especially la- bour cost. For instance, prices of commodities and labour cost have been raised 8 times and 14 times respectively during this period. On the other hand, total operating cost has been con- trolled to increase 4.5 times. The productivity of the mine has been increased 4 times by means of improvement of individual works and adoption of perfectly mechanized trackless mining system to reform the mining method. Some improvements are presented as follows; Today, drifting is carried out by the tunnelling crew which consists of 9 operators equipped with 5 Mobile-Jumbos, 2 LHD's and a jeep for carrying and loading ex- plosives. In order to get the high utilization of these machines, each crew manages systematically and continuously adjacent 15 faces under the direction of a forceman. As a result, we have accomplished high advance of drift. Furthermore, raising is carried out by a set of the raise-borer in case of long raises like ore- passes and also by the stage blasting method in case of short ones like slot-cuts. Generally speaking, the sublevel stoping method is considered to be one of the best methods for various respects; high productivity, low cost, easy grade control and safety. This method has been introduced in Tochibora Mine since 1950 and is now widely applied to lodes that could not be mined before by this method be- cause of the shapes of them and the conditions of their country rock. Now we are convinced to be nearly accomplished for our method. This report presents some examples of the standard sublevel stoping method and its variations which are practised at the mine. STANDARD SUBLEVEL STOPING Up to 1979 since 1950 when this method was first applied at the mine, 17 million tons of crude ore have been produced by this method, which amounted to 55% of the total production of the mine. During three decades, the productivity has been increased considerably by means of trackless mining system using large-sized machines and etc.. In other words, mining efficiency has been increased from 20 tons/man.shift to 100 tons/man.shift at large stopes. Formerly undercutting was carried out above the drawing drift by jack-legs and small scrapers and then several cone-shaped glory holes were made by stopers between the undercut level and the draw level. But now, a undercut drift is driven in parallel with the haulage drift at the same level of it. And at the undercut drift, drilling upward is carried out by a large-sized machines like the fan drill in order to extract the broken ore directly at the drawing drift connected with the haulage drift. Simplification of the work as well as utilization of large- sized machines enables to get higher productivity. But if the deposit is comparatively wider and the broken ore around the middle part of the deposit cannot be extracted, several drawing drifts are driven to the deposit and in order to minimize dead ore at the final stage of operation, the

Over 800 mines have closed in Australia in the past 25 years. This paper summarizes the data obtained from those closures and includes all Australian States and Territories and all commodities, including metalliferous, coal and industrial minerals. Twenty five percent of the mines closed due to resource exhaustion or depletion; 24% due to high costs, price drops, or declining grades; 8% due to open pit resource depletion (but with underground reserves remaining) or underground reserves depleted (but plans to open cut remainder) and 7% due to receivership or voluntary administration. The environmental, social and economic impacts of these closures are also significant and include acid mine drainage and impact on mine employees. An understanding of the causes of premature mine closure will better equip mining companies and governments to better manage future mine closures, wherever in the world the mines are operating.

The wedge shape theory of the rock fragmentation range in bench blasting is presented according to the dynamic characteristics of rock fragmentation by blasting in open pit under the condition of hole-by-hole initiation. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to analyse the rock fragmentation mechanism. The rock mass stress contours, crack propagation and damage evolution of different moments were obtained. Henry D. HibbaRd, Pittsburgh, Pa,: This is a most interesting and instructive paper, some of whose lessons should find immediate application. It points out how fuel-consumption is to be decreased in open-hearth practice, by changes in the plan of the furnace. To look first at the greatest item of loss, radiation, it is seen that thicker brick-work is advisable to lessen this. Especially is this true of the roof, made at present, almost universally, only 9 inches thick to prevent cutting. Now that high roofs, well above the course of the flame, are becoming general, and the average melter is better able to judge the temperature of his furnace, that reason has less force; and we may build roofs 18 inches thick, or perhaps better cover the usual 9 inches with an equivalent layer of sand, which has the advantage of following the arch as it rises and falls with the different degrees of heat. The side-walls of the hearth, usually 131/2 inches thick, may also he thickened up to 18 inches, and the door-linings to 7 inches; and the heat thereby saved will be valuable, while its absence from the working-platform will be much appreciated by the workmen.
